Tango brings up that one of his cousins has gotten a job at a theater but can't remember what exactly they do but that it's got a weird name. He realizes that his first thought for a clue to help Ford figure this out is funny in a raunchy way and continues after a pause; "something like... the hand... job?" while making a fist and doing his best confused face.

Whiskey manages a dry response but is blushing, and it takes a second for Ford to stop laughing and tell him his cousin is probably a grip.

Ok, but autistic!Tango who doesn't understand a literal thing that everyone assumes is Common Knowledge, and probably is honestly, and he can tell that he doesn't Get It, but that it's Common Knowledge, and now he's suddenly afraid to ask a question, because he did the same thing in middle school and was bullied from then on all the way through high school, until coming to Samwell, and it's why he went to a college Far Away from home.

Lardo notices his small frown, the pinch in his eyebrows.

She waits until there's a moment with just them and looks at him and goes "It's a pop culture reference. From (Insert pop culture show/movie/book)."

Tango's lip wibbles, but he doesn't cry, and his eyes stay dry, but his voice cracks when he quietly says "Thank you."

Lardo shrugs, says no problem, but asks him why he didn't ask.

He admits he didn't get a reference to Captain America, of all things, in middle school, and got bullied until he moved to go to Samwell.

Lardo tells him to not ever worry about that: of the boys' chirping makes him feel bad, she'll handle it. He just needs to ask.

Tango asks Lardo things he genuinely doesn't get but knows is probably "common knowledge" for the rest of the year.

She answers everything, and if she somehow also doesn't know, she tells him, and they ask Ransom, who usually always knows.

But she also notices that Tango is smart, and is a pretty decent artist himself, and what is that very detailed bug you drew holy shit??

And Tango proceeds to infodump on her about this bug because he's been obsessed with not just that one, but all bugs, since he was 4.

And that's how Lardo learns her frog is a Biology Major and wants to study bugs.

And then whenever Tango asks her something, a bit worried he's being dumb about whatever he's asking, Lardo asks a question about a bug. Any bug. She asked about caterpillars and Tango got so excited and talked to her about it for almost an hour before Holster came downstairs, heard, and went "what the fuck, gross."

Lardo shouted "You're gross, asshole! This is fucking cool!"

Because it was.

She tells Foxtrot there's a mandatory "ask Tango about a bug at least twice a week" clause to her new job, and Foxtrot goes "weird but ok".

The first time Foxtrot does it sophomore year, Tango gets so excited that he nearly knocks her down.

i genuinely don't think a story's worldbuilding and lore has ever drawn me in the way that check please did. it's been years and i still think about it every day. the characters and plot were always superb but i think what has stuck with me the most is the depth of the settings and how everything feels so lived in and tangible. everyone wants to make a fake world and town and university but no one else has EVER done it that well

Wanting to make a new splash into the industry, Camilla tracks down Lardo's online persona in order to start of her new album all the while Lardo watchers her and jack get closer.

I'm like 10 years late to seeing this ask but guess what. I LOVE IT.

God like... Lardo the songwriter writing all these songs and Camilla singing them and the FEELINGS she would get about it. And then she gets Inspired ™ and writes like. This queer pop anthem and sends it to Camilla DRUNK after Shitty forces her hand or something. But then Camilla literally sends her a demo the next morning. Like she woke up and recorded it.

The single goes MEGA viral. Award show time. Camilla goes with Jack, and Lardo is like. Well. Ha. Of course. They're together! Totally! And then she finds Jack MACKING ON THE VOGUE SOCIAL MEDIA GUY (*ahem* bitty *ahem*) IN A HALLWAY. And she's like "Oh my god I have to tell Camilla. No it's going to break her heart. NO I HAVE TO BE HONEST."

So she goes find Camilla and she's trying to pull her away but then they get papped together and Camilla starts POSING LIKE THEY'RE A COUPLE. and introduces her as her songwriter and "muse" to the press. So they get past the red carpet and Lardo grabs Camilla and is like "listen, here's the thing." and Camilla is like. "Well so the thing is that I'm his beard. And also I am gay."

(i have to write this and as a toronto fan it is devastating. the boston/toronto divide is strong. okay, no, you're not here for my hot sports takes.)

actually bob as a montrealer has the same issue, he cannot believe that now he needs to root for boston. mario and wayne are incredibly disappointed in him. bob perseveres because alicia on the ice is one of the most beautiful things he's ever seen.

his friends actually chirp him more about the way he talks about alicia playing than the fact that he supports boston.

bob was on a quebecois soap that ran for ten years. it was about a family who ran a logging company and it was messy. everyone loved it. bob has his own canadian screen award and a prix gémeaux and the show won best soap two years in a row. he met wayne and mario at various functions where they were presenting and they've bonded.

alicia shows up for her first team physical and finds out that she can't actually play that season (hi jack!)

alicia was the top scorer on pwhl boston her first year and she was consistently top twenty across the league.

whichever goalie had the most games where she didn't get a goal at the end of the season got their drinks paid for by the others until the next season started.

(alicia comes to samwell when jack is playing and they all convince her to get on the ice during practice. it's mostly just for fun, but chowder stops one of her shots and spends the next five minutes freaking out and apologizing. alicia laughs and sends him christmas presents until he graduates and not a single boy on the team lets him buy a drink for the rest of his college career. like, not even at annie's)

boston wins the cup her first year. and her second year. there was almost a threepeat.

alicia makes bob come to a red sox game when she throws the first pitch out. it's against the expos. bob refuses to wear a red sox jersey (and the expos win.)

bitty says "mrs. jack's mom"

suzanne bittle still has heart eyes. ("we all had her card, we wanted to be just like her!" shitty in the background *cough* "you mean get with her". bitty wants to die. nothing much is different.)

Hello esteemed mutual. If you are reading this, then that means my propaganda is working. But you might still have questions, so I am here to answer them.

What is Check, Please! (OMGCP)?

Check, Please! is a webcomic that ran from 2013 to 2020. It's written and illustrated by Ngozi Ukazu and it follows Eric "Bitty" Bittle's four years at Samwell University. Bitty is a vlogger, amateur baker and figure-skater-turned-hockey-player and he has gotten a scholarship to play hockey on the Samwell Male Hockey team. There's only one issue: there's checking. Ice hockey is a physical sport and checking, which is basically tackling other players in various ways, is a huge part of it. Bitty is deadly afraid of it, which pissess off his team's captain, Jack Zimmermann.

Basically, it's a bit of a slice of life. It's the four years of Bitty's life, including the pies and the lows of his time at Samwell. It's about friendship, it's about love, it's about hockey and it's about baking!

Where can I read it?

It's all on good ole Tumblr. Aside from that, it's also hosted on its own website, and since 2024, Ngozi has been putting it on Webtoon, but it's not finished there. I think Ngozi is uploading it on a weekly basis there. I'm not sure.

You can also read it as physical books. Check, Please! was published by First Second, and Ngozi also published the books herself through Kickstarter campaigns. These different publications have different extras. I own all of them, so if you want to borrow them, let me know.

(Also, there's one Year 4 chapter exclusive to the books. Long story.)

Is it gay?

Yes.

I don't know anything about hockey!

Neither did I! But apart from the main comic, there's also a side comic called "Hockey Shit with Ransom and Holster", in which Ransom and Holster explain a couple of hockey things.

Bitty? Ransom? Holster? Are those actual names?

Apparently in hockey, people have nicknames. This leads to stellar names like Bitty, Ransom, Holster, Lardo, Dex, Nursey, Chowder, Tango, Whiskey, Fox and Shitty. And many more! Yes, there's a guy who calls himself Shitty. This also gets explained in the Hockey Shit side comics.

Side comics?

Yes! There is the main comic, but the main comic is just the tip of a huge iceberg. There's the Hockey Shit comics, but also little side comics about other things that happen off-page, like Winter Screw or Year 2 Dibs. Then there's the blog, which is the author's commentary. Often, Ngozi put some little extra scenes and art in those blog posts. There's also extras, which is even more extra content of stuff that happens off-page! Characters like the Haus Ghosts and Johnson are more fleshed out there.

Check, Please! used multimedia storytelling. Johnson looked after the official Facebook. Ransom and Holster, and later Ford, also did Ask-A-Wellie, which is when people could send questions on Tumblr for the team. The biggest thing is Bitty's Twitter. Ngozi tweeted as Bitty real time for years (and I respect the hell out of it). A lot of story moments were first introduced here and also a lot of character bonding happened there. Bitty (and others) also interacted with readers there. The majority of his Tweets were later published in the Chirpbook (which I own), but not all of them. RIP Jack's look-a-like's cowboy hat.

Wait... do I have to read all of that?

Oh lord, no! But it is highly recommended, by me. It's the full experience, after all!

If you just want the story of Check, Please! the main comic is exactly that. You don't need the extra stuff in order to understand it. Important things, like the Year 2 Dibs, get mentioned within the main comic anyway.

Sometimes things do show up in the main comic, but then it's so irrelevant to the plot that you don't miss out on it. For example, one chapter opens with Bitty surrounded by roses and in a blog post you learn where they come from, but the roses have no influence on what happens in the story. It's just a cute extra for people who do read the blog posts. Or sometimes things get expanded in the extras. Somewhere in Year 3, Bitty gets big news and there's an extra that shows non-Samwell characters reacting to the news. Again, cute for people who look up the extras.

So yes, the side content is heavily recommended, since it does enhance a lot from the main comic and also the majority of cool stuff that I am obsessed with comes from the side content (Camilla Collins, please, I love you...) and a lot of fan content also includes the extras. This did have the downfall of a huge Mandela effect. Since, idk, 2022, the fandom has been busy trying to figure out what is actually canon or what is fanon. Turns out one of the biggest blorbos is completely made up by us. Damn, I could've sworn he was from the extras...

Is it better than Heartstopper?

I have said that it is, but it's also comparing apples and pears, ya know?

The reason I have said this before is simply because Check, Please! means more to me. It was, like, one of my first big fandoms after Glee ended (with the other being Deaf West Spring Awakening lol). I have just noticed that Heartstopper has introduced many people to the queer webcomic world and I am just saying that if you liked Heartstopper, you should check out Check, Please! because I said so and I love it more. But they are different comics, with different characters and different things happen. The characters of Check, Please! are also in college, not in secondary school, which also changes things. Basically, yes, they are both great queer webcomics with a good balance between fun shenanigans and angst, but they're widely different and should be appreciated for their differences. (Although I did eat up the photosets with Heartstopper and Check, Please! parallels nom nom nom yum yum yum CHOMP CHOMP CHOMP.)

I suppose there is something to be said about how every queer webcomic is getting compared to Heartstopper these days (which isn't Alice Oseman's fault), in the same way that, for example, every upcoming farming sim gets compared to Stardew Valley (which isn't ConcernedApe's fault either), but that is a different conversation.

Are there German characters in Check, Please!?

No, but Year 4 introduces a Swedish character. Is that good enough?
