Your posts make me happy whenever I see them because one day, I would like to become a teacher. I want to teach possibly kindergarten or first grade. Also, I think your posts can be applicable in non-school settings too in some cases. Thank you for such a wonderful blog! <3
Thank you! So much! I don't get many asks so this means a lot to me :)
If you have a bachelor's, I recommend you try substitute teaching. Look up the school district that you live in, check the careers page, and see how they hire their substitutes. Usually, it's done through a contract agency. Most schools near me use ESS. Typically it's $150/day in New Jersey, and it's very easy to get hired so long as you go through criminal background screening first.
I have about 15 different jobs in my career history, spanning many industries. Teaching has been the most meaningful and rewarding by far. It's also been the most difficult by far. Do not go in unprepared.
Do not go through an education program until you have ample experience in the classroom to see if you are a good fit for the job. That's what I did, and it did not work out. You want to see your strengths and weaknesses in the real setting before you invest your time.
And it's worth it if you can stick the landing.
#thank you for raising your hand#career advice#I'm working towards a career in tech so I can get into EdTech and do independent content creation on the side

“Many say the moon is closer to the dead.”
This is COLOR OF A MIRROR, my debut novel with an original, dark ambient soundtrack by composer Josh McCausland to go along with it.
Written, designed, and published by me, it’s the culmination of years of work, and it’s exactly the story I wanted to tell. It’s not loud or bombastic, but rather a cerebral, slow-burn cyberpunk narrative lingering on themes of fame, paranoia, religion, and technology. If you’re a fan of the brooding futures of William Gibson, Blade Runner, or anything with a mood like the movie Drive, I think you’ll find something to love here.
Available exclusively on my website, it comes in limited edition deluxe-hardcover, softcover, and e-book. (And if you’re a vinyl lover, the soundtrack is pressed in 180g Moondust White; also available on my site.)
Welcome to the Dive. Hope to see you around.

hmm sorry generative AI isn't another trademark use of progress it's qualitatively different the tradeoff isn't efficiency it's your independence
#not whump#this will be my only comment#like for the longest time#technological advances have always been a tradeoff between progress and independence and its then become a question of “is it worth it”#and like. factories and tech like computers and phones. sure yeah we're now more dependent on them#but they arent affecting how we think#or let me say that better#its not an outsourcing of our thoughts/ creativity#because its not about the production this time#its about the process#like no one thinks the same way for a reason its one of the defining things about humans#i had such an interesting conversation earlier about this#and im not saying theres no use for generative AI#its just making me a little. weirded out by how convential its become#there should be some trepidation about its use. well thought out before using it#idk though#troy rambles#sorry guys

honestly continually taken aback at how squeamish citizens get if you're honest about the practical calculus of immigrating, even the ones who think of themselves as pro-immigration! like why are you suddenly stumping for The Good Immigrant archetype bc i promise the immigration bureau is NOT going to fuck you!!!
#like all my international student and immigrant friends are pretty like yeah these are the things you have to do to get legal status#particularly if you're not in like one of a dozen 'highly skilled' fields#and it's like oh okay so the system incentivizes going to a university here as a smoother pathway to immigration#that gets you points on your eventual application for longer term residency#and yet both the government and other people want you to pretend that that doesn't factor into your decision making at all???#like why is it only okay if i tell you that i came here just for the love of academia and then was like oh haha it's so great i had to stay#and was just serendipitously able to take advantage of this immigration pathway that i didn't even know about that you left open to me!!!!#like why would i maintain that kind of fiction if you're not a child and should know better#like i took a gamble and figured that it would be quicker and more reliable than trying to find a job that would sponsor me#and then i wouldn't be at the mercy of some random employer who could fire me and jeopardize my status at literally any time???#it drives me literally insane how much i'm supposed to pretend that the moon is made of pudding like i'm sorryyyyyyyy#like why are you setting up a system where you can only get through it in certain ways then freaking out at me for taking one of those ways#and it must be said probably the only one of those ways that was actually realistically available to me given my resources and skillset#like it's so weird how many residual hangups people have about what 'right' way to immigrate even if they say they don't#and it must be said generally know fuck all about how immigration and its bureaucracy work in their given country so like half of the shit#they're imagining as what you should do isn't even something that most people slash anyone could do#it drives me nutssssssss okay i'm done#i just was getting a medical test done and the tech was like oh you must love [subject area] and i was like oh yeah haha and i also loved#being able to move here (rookie mistake i should not have even mentioned this but in my defense i was very drowsy)#and she got soooooo weird and terse and was like 'oh! well i just assumed you were one of those people who loves learning'#like yeah that was on me but like you're an adult who knows how tuition and employment work and i literally said i was doing a lit degree..#like MAYBE if i were soo independently wealthy that would be a sufficient reason to work constantly for shit pay and no practical benefits#but c'mon girly........#okay i'm done it just drives me up the wall to have people act like i'm some craven freak#for looking realistically at my options for immigrating and being like hmmm well this one seems the most doable for me i guess#like i have figured out you do just have to be like oh yeah haha to whatever people say and again i would normally remember to do that#but it just makes me feel soooo like we're living in two different realities. esp when i have friends who Get It due to we're all getting#fucked by the immigration bureau constantly#it feels a lot like when you have to talk about your disability with people who've literally never thought about or experienced such a thing#and they'll give you some inane useless boilerplate advice then be affronted if you talk about how you actually (have to) navigate the world

Really weirded out when people insist a setting is medieval because it's fantasy and there are swords
#fantasy worlds don't necessarily have modern historical correlaries!#most fantasy follows closer to like. Herodotus' version of the ancient world but with more tech#or late renaissance#and of course exists independently of those time periods#we should be using the text itself as primary context; not an unsupported real-world comparison point#not to mention our notions of what's modern and what isn't are as likely to be based in caricature as in actual history

Today (and yesterday, and last week... it's been one of those months, TBH) things got weird at work again. Background: I work in animal health but we are more about reportable disease and blood work than cute living patients. Therefore the office is one old vet, one young vet, and three lab techs, only one of them with a veterinary degree. The other two of us did envisci (me) and criminal justice. She does a lot of the Bloodwork.
Bloodwork is also the only one of us who was born and raised locally, a mormon, and the youngest by about one year. This means, since I now live in the same ecosystem as the LDS church, that our equally mormon local handyman keeps trying to set her up, because his uncle knows her dad or some other such - matchmaking is not ONLY the provenance of female relatives here. Bloodwork does not want to be set up. She wants to refurbish her great grandma's house for herself and her cats. The first time Handyman decided to take his break in our air conditioning and decided his only avenue of conversation was construction dudes he knew who Bloodwork should have coffee with (all most of a decade younger than her) I offered to run him out of the building. With a broom. This was not enough of a hint for him, and as such, Vet Tech and I have been regarding him with a sort of polite territoriality. Building inspections and repairs therefore go like this: We let him in. Bloodwork finds something to do besides play tour guide. Handyman blithely and with complete friendliness makes a casually sexist comment about what 'you ladies broke' or 'do you do anything but chat' and Vet Tech and I hackle up like a pair of lionesses. Politely. Some portion of Handyman's hindbrain realizes that even though he's twice the size of both of us, if we're lionesses he is the wildebeest. He goes to put a wrench in something, usually a pipe. Today we needed to fix the emergency shower in the lab, because the last thing you need if you get a corrosive acid on your face is scalding water direct from the water heater.
For those of you who never had to do the lab safety training: the emergency shower is a bright yellow overhead faucet designed to dump a fuckton of water on you in case of contact with chemicals. It is in no way partitioned, and is in the middle of the lab. Because time is of the essence if you are developing a chemical burn. If you get in there you're diving in fully clothed and also drowning your phone. It also has a separate little sink for rinsing specifically your eyes.
Enter Handyman. Handyman climbs first a ladder, then our filing cabinets, to get WAAAAY into the supply room ceiling. There is a pipe junction in there or something. We turn the eyewash on and take turns running our fingers through it to test the temperature, because we don't actually own a thermometer in the lab. Temperature is adjusted, Handyman plonks down on the floor to ask if everything is good. "If you ladies need to take a hot shower I can turn it back," he says, seemingly unaware that this could be taken as not the BEST thing to say at work. "We're good," says Vet Tech, "this means we won't scald your eyeballs."
#look vet tech is NOT full of people whose eloquence is legendary#in fact our most common observation of a large animal independent vet#is oh yeah that one's autistic too#They go out into the country and stick vaccines into cows#and then call us on the phone and tell us several billion symptoms that the herd has ever had#anyway#I came by my lion glare by being an older sibling#Vet Tech perfected hers by being an aunt#Handyman does not try to set us up with anyone#Because some portion of his friendly and extremely politically reactionary brain knows we are professional#but unlikely to put up with any shit#Old Vet wandered out from a conference call at this point to shoo the handyman out#politely and britishly

7hrs into my work day lets play a fun game of how much overtime will they make me do 🥰
#i should be going home in AN HOUR!#if im here until 7 again im pulling a sickie tmr idgaf#making me run this stupid thing twice in a day bitch it takes 5 hours!!!!! and i had to do an hour of washing up this morning from#yesterdays run bc we havent had a functional lab dishwasher for 3 months yep we have been fucking handwashing every piece of lab glassware#FOR THREE MONTHS!!#u guys dont even fucking know how much glassware we get thru in a fucking day its shambles#i dont think i even have enough glassware for my second run this afternoon so im gonna have to wash up more#one of the other techs made up the most time consuming reagent for me tho which saves me an hour bless her#but fuuucking hell. hoping when i get back from lunch theyll tell me i dont need to do any more 😭#so i can LEAVE. ON TIME. PLEASE#i cant do another 11 hour day man im not on a fucking shift pattern. if i was then at least id be able to fucking meal prep in advance#but nooooo theyre addicted to giving me unscheduled overtime to do tasks i fucking hate#also did i mention they made it even more complex so now i have to take readings every 30 seconds while constantly titrating this shit#for TEN HOURS. the amount of focus it takes is horrendous i have to keep the number in a 0.0016 range and there are so many dilutions#all this and u can still only analyse 3 samples in 5 hours bc everything has to be in triplicate its fucking sisyphean. hell on earth#puts my head in my hands and wails. im fine ahahahhaahaha. everyone in the lab is being nice abt it at least im getting a lot of pity#i wish i could work shift pattern by this point man or like a 4 day week w 10 hour days. when my managers back im gonna ask her abt it#bc theyve let a few other ppl have custom hours. they wont let me work weekends which is annoying bc im SO productive alone#i might ask again lol so much of my shit is fully independent anyway. aourgh. i get so twitchy from staring at the numbers it makes my#vision swim a bit..... well im used to it#aight vent over im going back in..... wish me fucking luck guys#.diaries

Can’t think of a much better way to celebrate one year of this project, than by getting to see a review for COLOR OF A MIRROR in print for the first time! And in the indie section of Publishers Weekly no less!
Written, designed, published, and sold by me.
Thanks to BookLife for the review, and thank you always to the Kickstarter backers who helped make this possible (and to everyone who’s picked up the book since then).

Winning is Never Whining

Denis Waitley’s quote, “Winning is never whining,” serves as a straightforward but profound reminder that success comes from resilience, not complaints. It highlights the difference between focusing on solutions and getting stuck in negativity.
Winners Don’t Complain: At its core, the quote suggests that true winners don’t waste time whining about their circumstances or challenges. Complaining only shifts the focus from progress to problems, while winners channel their energy into overcoming obstacles and finding ways to move forward. Success requires a proactive mindset, not one bogged down by complaints.
