I think I may be experiencing near normal hearing for the first time in my life thanks to the NHS. These are seven generations and 16 years more up to date than the 1st gen digital aids I was using until two days ago, and they are also tuned to my current hearing loss rather than what I had 12 years ago. Since putting them in my ears I have had innumerable remarkable experiences entirely new to me and of such depth I have been brought to happy tears.

I have heard my children’s voices in all their beautiful nuances, I have discovered classical music, I have watched TV without needing subtitles, and realised that the uneven gaps between songs whilst streaming music is not a connectivity issue - there is actually sound there. I’ve been to a lecture and understood every word without effort, I’ve listened to birds, and I’ve also discovered people convey subtle emotion through voice that I was previously unable to detect.

I’ve also been asked to describe what it was like to my philosophy class and found myself lacking the words to explain to hearing people what it is like to enter their world as a novel experience. Since then, I’ve been trying to figure out analogies. So, imagine you have contact lenses that made your vision tetrachromic while you were wearing them or a drug that gave you a high heightening one of your senses to superhuman levels while it was in your system. Either of these would surely be a magical experience.

I am super excited about all the things I am now going to be able to hear in the future. I want to listen to all the things! That’s something I never thought I’d say. Unaided, people’s voices are partially audible for me and I must work hard to make up the difference. With my old aids, they became more comprehensible but also unpleasant and almost painful to listen to, so I hated wearing them. Now, they are the most interesting type of sound.

The underfunding of the NHS has, obviously, imposed years of unnecessary disability upon me through neglect and out-dated technology. Some say money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy hearing aids and similar cool things for disabled people. If you have one, use your vote wisely.

hm. I guess thinking about Polygondwanaland as an abstract story of Australia's colonisation does raise a question about what tetrachromancy could possibly represent - I don't necessarily think every aspect of it should be taken as a perfect metaphorical equivalent, but it's an interesting way to see it.

It's definitely readable as a power struggle between religious missionaries, indigenous peoples, refugees and state power. That perspective of an ancient, untouched land.

Even in Aboriginal myth, there's different like... how would you describe it, human adjacent peoples? that could have come from ancient times where there were other species closer to homo-sapiens, as sort of described in one of the opening songs.

You could read the insurrection in Inner Cell as the tribesmen pushing back against the pioneers potentially, or resisting state violence.

As I said, Loyalty definitely feels flavoured with that kind of contemptuous, sadistic, paternalistic impulse of the Australian state. The destruction of families feels particularly pointed, as well as the displaying of bodies - something the settlers were known to do, not just in museums but there's accounts of them literally displaying Aboriginal heads as a warning (fucking savages.) but the government is quick to paint itself as "too generous", regardless.

Also in the heavy religious themes, the assertion of Christianity, this punishing God come to bring about order.

If I had to make an educated guess about what tetrachromancy means in this context, I think it's something like the creative spirit, culture maybe. It's both extremely powerful and elusive, it requires a deeper understanding of the world around you, maybe even that one can't just be a tetrachromancer but you need to be taught or altered in some way. Maybe the understanding not just of culture and art as a weapon but as a tool of resistance, something empowering, something connective, something to give you perspective.

This is just like. The general vibe I get, not a full breakdown or anything, maybe a deeper analysis is in order. But it's interesting.

uh. its been dead here so i wanted to post smthn while i work on more art so uh. you guys get old art about an oc I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH.

Tetrachrome (as it's called) was originally going to be a villain in one of my stories, however i felt they were too unfitting with how I was planning it out so uh. They just a little guy now, not evil or anything, but still weird and unnerving with the potential to murder. Are they an alien? Cryptid? Both? Probably but no one knows! It can communicate with people but no matter what it sounds....wrong.

Finished What My Mother and I Don't Talk About by Michele Filgate on my flight from Frankfurt to Seattle and was really enamored with the perspectives of the stories included. Some were certainly stronger than others, and a few felt disconnected from the broader theme of the collection, but overall it was an interesting read. I'm still piecing together my thoughts on it so apologies for the lackluster review.

Current Obsession?

Been working on a research paper for a class for the last six months on the impact of deep learning artificial intelligence in the arts and exploring contemporary academic literature to see how the study I carried out holds up, and luckily it does, while interestingly poking holes in the claims of another recently published work. More than anything, it has helped to shine a light on the overarching ignorance of futurists and their obsession with blind progress without regard for the consequences of such developments and developments that may constitute regressions in progress rather than progressions in fields.

I've also recently been reading up on the Boxer Rebellion and the Eight-Nation Alliance, as well as the role of early international institutions in the establishment of a multinational proto-neo-colonial narrative that sought to further deepen European connections (as a means toward exploitation) to Asia. Not sure what I'll use this research for, but my major fixates on these sorts of things, so I'm sure it'll prove valuable in discussions and analysis at some point.
