Looking at me, you assume I’m a young woman in her early 20s. But, I am wearing jeans and my jean jacket, so what you don’t know is I’m actually Johnny Cade and Tex McCormick, simultaneously.

What people don’t understand is that Mason and Tex McCormick are what would’ve happened if Darry and Sodapop Curtis’s life was both kinder and crueler, if they’d never had a baby brother, if they’d never had a dad who cared, if Soda hadn’t been forced into the role of a nurturer and Darry hadn’t let go of his dreams.

What people don’t understand is that Darry was a goer who had to stay, and that somewhere outside of Tulsa, years later, another boy just like him, burdened too young with responsibility and a rapscallion brother, would get the opportunity he was denied.

What people don’t understand is that Soda was a stayer left behind, and somewhere outside of Tulsa, years later, another boy just like him would lose the horse but find it again, would show his love by letting go, would laugh and play and remain a child.

What people don’t understand is that Mason McCormick could’ve been Darry, but fate was kinder and crueler and somehow he got out.

What people don’t understand is that Tex McCormick could’ve been Sodapop, but fate was kinder and crueler and somehow he wasn’t left behind.

What people don’t understand is that Mason and Tex McCormick could’ve been the Curtis tragedy reincarnated, but somewhere outside of Tulsa, years later, two brothers finally found the happy ending.

context- Cole Collins says something along the lines of “Your new guardian, this Winston guy? He’s a complete punk and ABSOLUTELY NOT a respectable adult. I don’t trust him.”

So Mark and Tex take a nice scenic walk over to Cole’s car :)

Mason may be the only brother Dally’s not biologically related to, but he’s the only one with a working brain. So he’s the favorite.
