cain sat, barely holding herself together. the skin across her knuckles was still split, dried blood tightening the stretch of her fingers as they flexed once, then stilled. maggie’s quiet voice only made the fire in her gut burn hotter—because she knew that quiet. knew it meant maggie had given up fighting for now. and that should’ve made it easier.

it didn’t.

she rubbed her hands down her thighs like that might scrape off the tension building in her chest, the one that screamed she shouldn’t have said that, why the fuck did she look at me like that, why do i keep doing this—until maggie’s body brushed against her, pressed close in the kind of silence that made cain want to rip the world in two just to feel something else.

still, her voice came out level. too level.

"you wanna go out looking like that?" she nodded toward maggie's face. the dried tears, the look of residual panic. she was still beautiful--but cain's damage was written all over her expression. "people are gonna stare. they'd know something's wrong."

it wasn’t said with care, not really. more like a warning. more like a don’t make me have to deal with that right now. cain’s jaw clenched, and for a second she didn’t speak again. just leaned back against the cushions like she was forcing herself to be still. like if she moved too fast, the fury would spill over again.

finally—

"we’ll order something. stay in." she paused. looked over at maggie without meeting her eyes. "i don’t… wanna fight anymore either."

it was honest. but heavy. dangerous. and beneath it, the same question cain always asked herself but never said aloud: how long can i hold this version of myself together before i break something again?

she reached for the remote like that might make things normal, like background noise could buffer the threat of herself. "you pick the movie. maybe something a little scary? redirect these nerves?"

it's insulting that you would think so. maggie had to bite her tongue, molars spearing the inside of her cheek to keep a stinging response from falling from her lips. how dare cain be insulted by anything she had to say after all she'd done to her ? while her knuckles were still raw from ramming through the drywall. still, she didn't speak, mouth twisting as she shifted her gaze to a point beyond cain's shoulder instead.

" yeah-- alright. " she sounded quiet, softer than she was used to speaking. nothing had ever taken her bite from her before, but the events of that evening had drained the fight out of her. " do you want to order food or something ? " maggie settled on the couch, frame pressed close to cain's. it was impossible to rid her body of its tension so easily, every muscle still taught from the strain of the fight. " or maybe-- we could go out. "

It spooked me too xD I had a feeling the washing machine was on its last legs; it's been unhappy during spin cycles for a while now, but I didn't think it would go out fizzling and with a "bang", so to speak.

My boyfriend, our cats, and I are all fine. Aside from the strong smell of burn (it sort of smelled like those toy cap guns with the paper strip caps) and dealing with a lot of water and towels because there were no proper ways to drain the washing machine, it wasn't too bad. Just a scare, and then an annoyance.

A new washing machine is on the way so all's good.

This took a LONG time to answer, and I'm sorry about that. Fact is, I have gone through a hard time lately. I lost my job in Sept, one I held my whole adult work life. It was a toxic environment, and ultimately, I think it's for the best. But it was kind of traumatic.

That said, things are better now. I've started my own business, indie publishing and freelance editing. It's work I feel passionate about. I may end up taking an employee position again in the future for the financial security, but for now, it's liberating to be free of Corporate's thumb. My mental health has improved.

Anyway, thank you for checking in! I appreciate you thinking about me. Knowing that you still think about my fanfics means the world. I put so much energy and love into them, it's incredibly meaningful to me, knowing how much you appreciate them! Thank you!

Not everybody can read all the time, but if you think you might or would like to read even just a handful of books through us (especially if you’re not able to find them elsewhere), then by all means please do. who knows, you may end up reading more just because you have a QLL library card! You can also always browse our collection from our website before getting a card if you want to explore what things we have that you’d be interested in checking out before you actually go ahead and get a card.

While it’s true we do have somewhat limited amount of patrons we can accept, we’re currently only halfway to hitting that ceiling. We’re hoping that by the time we do hit it, we’ll have fundraised more, so that we can simply raise that ceiling instead of turning anyone away.

Hey, Bex! 👋 How's it going?

It is going okay! My roommate got married to his long time partner on Saturday, the wedding was amazing, we went out for lunch and it was so fun! Yesterday we went grocery shopping, I did some writing, and had a real relaxing evening and then today was pretty chill overall, slept in, watched a playthrough of the game "Mouthwashing" (which wow that was a trip-), took some good time for myself and then finished up the current movie event in my discord server, wrapped up Final Destination fall. We watched the 5th one, everyone loved it!

I was planning to be in bed by now, but I made the mistake of playing some Zelda II (the original version, not the remastered one I finished) and now I gotta wind down or I won't sleep, so I thought I would say hi.

I'm glad to be back, although I may still be a little scarce the next few days cuz I still have a term paper due in Friday. (I'm writing about the ice age Missoula Floods.)
