Headcanons about Loustat's first kiss? When? HOW? 👀

Woof okay sorry I've been MIA. The horrors etc...BUT I love this question so I'm glad I can finally do it.

I kind of wrote what imagine for their first kiss in ch 1 of my collab fic, but it's also kind of a standalone excerpt so I'll post it under a cut as a sort of ficlet if anyone is interested!

Outside of that though, I'm pretty open to the details differing (there are a few different scenarios I really like), just with the same overall vibe. I mean, it's Interview-era Loustat so it has to be kind of toxique but with whatever weird, almost-intimacy they had.

Regardless, I think it happened at PdL, there's no way they made it four years without some funny business given the everything

Almost for certain it was a heat of the moment love/hate type of thing, probably an argument that finally made the tension between them snap. How long could they realistically yell in each other's faces without making out lbr

I think it would have to be in a moment of heightened emotion like that because Louis is Louis and while Lestat is down bad, anything remotely resembling wooing or emotional vulnerability would stand between him and going for it properly

If Lestat was the one to initiate, I think it would be an impulsive decision in the middle of a Louis tirade, he just lays one on him mid vitriolic sermony bitchfest. Less yapping more tongue action, Louis' hot when he's angry but also very annoying so it works out for Lestat

If Louis initiates it, it's probably because he finally snapped under the weight of his own repression and Lestat's hot boy factor. They're arguing and for a second Lestat looks JUST right so Louis pounces on him like a horny coyote, hellfire be damned

No matter what it's all in. This is not a nervous peck or after dinner kiss, teeth would be breaking if they were human and it's a little feral. Kind of a collision

Something inanimate definitely gets broken also, maybe a lamp, a table leg, a door jamb, whatever. IWTV Loustat = collateral

The only options I see as a possibility post-kiss would be things escalating into some sort of blood sharing/sex/both depending on your preference, or both of them realizing what they did more immediately which makes Louis lose his shit and Lestat slam the emotional walls down so they both run off right away. Either way they avoid each other for a couple weeks after before repeating the cycle in various iterations until the Claudia dynamic shift

Surveying the grounds of Pointe du Lac after dark in the height of a cold snap was not at all what Lestat wished to be doing on a January night, but he was quite used to not getting what he wanted, especially when Louis was involved. The man in question was nearly always cold anyway, and Lestat had half a mind to think this outing was some sort of punishment for him under the feeble excuse of preparation for re-sowing the following month. The offer to stay behind was predictably (and smugly) extended, but he refused to give Louis the satisfaction, nor any reason to solidify his misguided belief in his sole ownership of the plantation, legal deeds be damned.

Whatever the case, Louis would regret his decision, Lestat would make sure of it. Louis may have been succeeding in making them both miserable, but he had been just as successful at making himself a captive subject. The ground was damp beneath them and the mud, cold in the winter air, made the horses’ steps heavy. All the better, Lestat usually lost his hostage once they reached the house. Louis had a way of doing that, slipping through the cracks like a dormouse where even the cat couldn’t follow. It was out in the open that the cat had the advantage.

“I heard Charles Laurent proposed marriage for you and his daughter.” Lestat nudged his horse closer to Louis’ until their steps fell in time. “Béatrice, was it?”

“He did.”

Lestat hardened his stare, willing Louis to meet his gaze through the dark drape of hair that had fallen from its ribbon. It shrouded his expression rather entirely from view and Lestat wondered if he’d left it there on purpose. It wouldn’t be the pettiest thing Louis had done to shut him out. He pawed at the mouse again.

“I also heard you declined.”

“Yes.” A disappointing squeak indeed.

“How come? It is an excellent family, they do well in sugarcane. And Mademoiselle Béatrice is very beautiful.”

In lieu of an answer, Louis urged his horse to a near-trot that Lestat matched easily a moment later. Louis’ chest lifted in a silent sigh before he apparently resigned himself to conceding the bare minimum.

“They do. And she is.”

Louis was always so prim when he rode, enough to make Lestat twitchy. Heels dropped in the stirrups, elbows tight to his hips, back straight enough to look painful. Chin in the air of course, but that wasn’t relegated to the equestrian realm. At least the protrusions of the saddle pushed his thighs forward to improve the view, even if his other assets were covered by his tail coat. Unfortunate that. Louis was clenched tight enough that the view would surely have been sublime.

“Well?” Lestat asked, letting his mare sidle uncomfortably close again, their riding boots nearly touching.

Louis jerked his horse right quickly enough that the stallion’s hind quarters bumped his own horse’s shoulder. “I do not have to explain myself to you, Lestat,” he snapped, any appearance of leisure fully abandoned as he tried to break for the house. The attempt was half-hearted though and Lestat cut him off easily, the stallion balking and dancing in half-circles until Louis regained control of its head.

“Au contraire, mon cher. It is my livelihood at stake as well.” The endearment made Louis’ jaw tighten even further, but he let his horse fall back in step with Lestat’s.

“Are you so desperate to expand our wealth—my wealth—that you would marry me off like a medieval widow at the first offer?” Louis’ eyes flashed sharp and olivine at him in the lantern light. He looked so much like the portrait of his father in the foyer, the same cruel mouth on a fairer face.

“As if this is the first. Formal or otherwise.”

This seemed to disquiet Louis greatly, his tone shifting from serpentine anger to something a tad hysterical. “You would truly have me do such a thing? Move a woman into our home? Marry her? What do you suppose will become of you in such a situation?” There was an undercurrent to the protests that negged at Lestat’s ear, some suggestion of weakness he couldn’t name. Still, there was blood in the water and a source needed to be determined.

He laughed, as amused as he was intrigued by his companion’s clumsy parry. “Don’t be ridiculous, Louis. I’ll ensure she does not last to the first harvest.” There was a clump of gangling irises as they passed a marshy area. He reached down and ripped the flower heads off. “A few months would be sufficient to solidify your holdings over the Laurent estate, and then I can make it appear like the most tragic accident. I will even allow you to bed her a time or two before I do the deed, generous as I am.”

“You are as shameless and despicable as ever I see.” Louis sounded as much bored as disgusted, but Lestat smirked to himself at the way the horse pranced and tossed its head at its rider’s turmoil.

“So you intend to deny any profitable union with the fairer sex until we are both forced to leave the prospect behind and flee familiar company in a few years time?”

“I apologize, monsieur. Are your current accommodations so insufficient?” Lestat could almost imagine his ears pinned like the horse’s as he was cornered. “And here I was under the impression that you wanted for nothing while contributing just as much.”

“And it would be such a burden for you to endure the intimate company of a beautiful woman for a few months simply as an insurance policy?” The objections were so great that Lestat found he was genuinely asking in spite of his frustration. “Wed Mademoiselle Laurent, fuck her long enough to get the estate in your name, and then you’ll be rid of her! Honestly, any reasonable man would be chomping at the bit for such an opportunity.”

“I don’t fancy her.”

Lestat dropped his face into his hand, rubbing at the frustration gathering in his temples. “She is hardly your only option, Louis, Christ! The Blanchet girl was all but thrusting her bosom in your face all evening last Tuesday. She would’ve lifted her skirts at a single beckon. And don’t tell me that isn’t so or that you didn’t notice.”

Something about that assertion, likely the irrefutable truth of it, upset Louis visibly and impossibly further. At the very least, he didn’t seem prepared to argue that particular point.

“Of course I noticed. I don’t believe a blind man could’ve missed it.”

Perhaps Monsieur de Pointe du Lac could simply stand to be rejected more often.

“Then why in God’s name are you so obstinate? All your prattle about being a good Catholic and you refuse to perform the one duty which might bring you some tangible benefit?”

“I am not the slave to my faith you believe me to be. I doubt the thing that condemns me to hell will be remaining a bachelor.”

Even digging his heels in like a stubborn hog, Louis looked radiant in the moonlight, skin glowing white as fairy linen and feu-follet eyes enticing enough to follow to one’s death in the swamp. It was infuriating really. It made Lestat want to knock him from his horse and straight into the muck.

“Well, in that case, shall we go whoring? There is a new brothel a short ride into the city and you are in truly dire need. What do you prefer? Brunettes? Redheads? What about blondes? You seem like the type for blondes.” One could only hope.

“I will do nothing of the sort. You may do as you please—heaven knows I can’t stop you—but I will not be involved.”

“And why is that?” he asked, curiosity still piqued despite the outwardly ordinary nature of their disagreement.

“It is impious. Fornication.” Fornication. Lestat could show him fornication, starting with planting an absolutely punishing kiss on that haughty mouth. Nothing he’d seen Louis doing as a mortal came even close to being anything titillating enough to earn such a salacious title.

“I thought you weren’t a slave to your God.” There were at least hundred better potential retorts, but he was preoccupied with Louis now in an entirely different way, staring unabashedly and imagining the many methods by which he could turn the lustrous curtain of his hair to sweaty clumps or reduce his fancy words to primal noises.

“It’s not one or the other. I’m not perfect, but I try, where I can, to be godly.”

He snapped his head to the right, meeting Louis’ gaze before he could turn to avoid eye contact. “Bollocks.”

“And what do you mean by that?”

“I mean that you’re lying,” he said, eyes narrowed. “I’ve seen you taking pleasure with women. You did so the very night I first saw you, there on the docks.” The house was in view now, and Lestat was half-compelled to try and suck the truth straight from his companion’s veins before he lost his chance.

Louis’ cool demeanor remained static as Lestat glared daggers at him, seeming perfectly unconcerned with that possibility. As if he knew as well as Lestat did that it would never happen. “Well, I made a great many mistakes in the months after my brother’s passing.” He shifted the reins awkwardly in his hands. “I have no desire to engage in such behavior.”

And there, in the clipped condemnation of a righteous man, was the truth Lestat had failed to see before. It was painfully obvious, simple enough that it seemed ridiculous he’d not suspected before.

Louis could not read the minds of mortals, but Lestat could. He had seen a great many things in his companion’s before the turning. Most of all he had seen how Louis looked at him, enthralled by his supernatural radiance certainly, but not only that. There was desire there as well, for more than immortality, lustful admiration followed by a flood of nauseating shame that gave Lestat sympathy pangs.

Even with the Veil of Silence now in place, he didn’t miss Louis’ gaze on him, the way his eyes were drawn by the deep ‘v’ of Lestat’s undershirts or the way they lingered on the shape of his lower half in breeches. It had been a marvelous turn of events, that they were already alike in…sexual predilections. How splendid! But he had been wrong, at least in part. Louis was not, it seemed, quite so much like himself as Lestat had previously assumed.

“Is it because you’re a homosexual?”

The brashness of his question brought exactly the desired result. Not an answer, of course, no more than indignant, scandalized curses as Louis turned his horse toward the house at a near-run, but it was too late. Lestat followed quickly, chasing the smell of fear on the wind.

Louis made surprisingly little effort to avoid him at the house, and Lestat found him easily in the drawing room, removing his boots and coat in front of the fire. He didn’t acknowledge the arrival with a greeting or even a glance, though he was sure to have heard Lestat enter. Even once he turned away from the hearth, Louis remained silent, fixing his ribbon as he looked down at a pile of accounting documents on the side table.

Lestat tossed his coat on the chair, waistcoat, riding gloves, and his own ribbon going with it, leaving him in breeches and undershirt, curls shaken loose. He stretched, making sure the taper of his waist was clearly visible in silhouette, leaving his arms up to fluff his hair into place. Louis always objected to his traipsing about so undressed. Perhaps he should’ve been taking it as a compliment.

When he turned back from the display (a bit more quickly than normal), Louis was giving him a particularly doe-eyed look. He hadn’t moved from his place by the table, but it was obvious where his attention had shifted when given a semblance of privacy. He startled when Lestat spun to look at him, and what followed was a truly atrocious poker face, smacking with guilt and panic like a child caught stealing sweets.

“Fear is not the first reaction of an innocent man merely questioned on a crime he did not commit.”

“You don’t frighten me,” Louis said, valiantly steady in voice, but only just.

“I do now.”

To his great surprise, Louis didn’t protest, seemingly accepting his fate with the melancholy stoicism of a condemned philosopher. It was almost unnerving to see the patron saint of losing battles so eerily content with this defeat. The display tugged at Lestat’s heartstrings enough to conjure his merciful side, and he let his eyes roam freely over the form in front of him, taking in the view in an obscenely conspicuous manner.

Even more surprising was the way Louis’ expression hardened and the anger returned to his face. Before he could take more than a step forward, Louis had backed up in equal measure.

“There’s nothing you can do to me,” Louis said, voice hushed but dripping venom. “I’m more powerful than you in any way that matters. Your mockery is all you have.”

“You think I’m mocking you?” Lestat took another step closer that Louis mirrored, then another.

“When have you ever done otherwise?” It was impressive really, the way Louis stood his ground, how he puffed his chest and set his jaw with the second-nature arrogance that Lestat had found himself so charmed by months ago, undiminished in the face of supernatural power and potential blackmail alike.

It was that self-destructive defiance that had first enlightened Lestat to this discovery of his kindred spirit, and it was what drove him forward now, what compelled him to cover the final distance between them until Louis’ back bumped into the wall and to press their mouths together. For all his posturing, Lestat kept the force behind it minimal, just enough insistent pressure to make his point (and his intentions) clear.

The performance must have been convincing enough, because it was only seconds before the mouth against his softened to the kiss. The fire was hot to his back, the arms that wrapped around his neck even cooler in contrast. He pressed his palms against the crushed velvet of the damask wallpaper, bracketing Louis’ head on either side for a spare moment before succumbing to the urge to increase their contact, stroking lightly at the skin of his jaw up to his temple.

Louis was tired, terribly so, and such a lonely creature. Lestat knew this of course, it was part of the siren call that had drawn him close and held him so completely in thrall, but it was only now, as awful as it sounded even in his mind, that the pity came, the burning desire to ease that loneliness rather than admire its lovely darkness like a Siam ruby or a Rembrandt.

Even more enchanting than Louis’ loneliness was watching his fleeting absolution from it, the way his eyes stayed gentle and half-lidded when they parted, how they closed again when Lestat cupped his cheek and or sighed as kisses were pressed to his neck. Lestat stayed there a long while, inhaling the scent of blood and cold skin and floral water at the juncture of his neck, content to allow the uncertainty of the future remain there for now.

Hi, what are your expectations for Phantom Thread? I'm convinced he will retire with a career best performance

I had a lot of expectations since the first time the project was announced. I even dreamed about it. More like, I kinda wish Phantom Thread is another There Will Be Blood. But then I realized that was a stupid thing to wish for. There Will Be Blood is a tough act to follow. Even for PTA himself. So now, I try not to expect anything before seeing the movie. I’m unable to do a full blackout but I’m trying my best to go in as blind as possible. I believe that’s the best way to enjoy PTA’s. 

I’m unsure what to make of DDL’s last performance until I see it. Before the embargo lifted I read some comments that his was just okay, Krieps and Manville stole the show, their characters were better written and so on. But judging from the reviews released now (I read the headlines and some paragraphs about him), the critics had nothing but praised. I guess, we’ll see if his last performance is really his best but I have a feeling that’s not something he strove to achieve. I think he just wanted to come back to his root. As a romantic lead, playing a British character in a British film, using his own accent and voice and all. .

#fluffyfriday thoughts! I feel like pdl is the biggest snuggler ever! Like he has that tough attitude on ice, but is the softest most snuggable boy ever, that likes to lay his head on your boobs and have ou scratch his back or run your fingers through his hair.

he was taking the losses personally and would beat himself up over it

you decided to step in because you were tired of watching your normally easy-going, loving boyfriend beat himself up

before he came home, you ordered some chinese food, and put on his favorite movie 

he came home from practice, and called out for you

he heard the tv playing, and made his way into the living room

“hi, welcome home.” you smiled, getting up from the couch

“what’s all of this?” his eyes danced from the tv, to the food on the coffee table, and finally the blankets sprawled out on the couch

“you’ve been having a hard few weeks, and i wanted to do something to help you relax.” you shrugged

a smile broke out on his face, “thank you. this is really nice.”

“yeah, yeah, i know.” you nodded, “now come sit.” you grabbed his hands, and led him over to the couch

you were halfway through your second movie, dinner had been demolished and pierre was now laying on top of you 

his head was on your boob while your head scratched up and down his back 

it was a thing that you and pierre did and it calmed both of you down

Information Overload

The past 2.5 weeks have been nothing short of exhausting and an absolute rollercoaster. My Oncologist called me with the results of the PET scan however it was very vague. He said it was more extensive than just in my skin. He said maybe it was in my bones, spine, lungs, lymph nodes, neck...WHAT????? After all those negative tests somehow without any symptoms I have cancer metastasized to all these areas in a matter of 2 weeks?

We spoke about getting into see the TNBC specialist in Madison and I asked him how quicky that could happen. He said she was travelling right now and wouldn't be able to see me but that she would refer me to a colleague there who was a breast cancer specialist, although not a TNBC specialist. He mentioned it would happen in 1-2 weeks and they would call to set it up. I hung up the phone and did not feel good and I had a ton of questions.

I had looked up information on Cancer Treatment Centers of America and decided to start a conversation with them. I spent an hour and a half on the phone with them talking about getting a second opinion. I spoke with a scheduling nurse and an intake nurse that night. I spoke with a Nurse Navigator to provide a complete history and records release authorizations, and got set up for a 3 day evaluation for a second opinion.

LOTS has happened since then...

* The day after I got my PET scan results, my medical system called me, randomly, to do a survey. Of course I did it. I provided feedback about the surgeon (whom I will not see again), my oncologist, and the fact that i felt like my medical team who I had trusted for a year suddenly was jumping ship. I also mentioned that they didn't seem to know what to do, which is OK - just tell me that and tell me you're going to get me in front of the right people. I also mentioned that I was seeking a 2nd opinion from CTCA.

* The following Wednesday I went to a tailgate at a Brewers Game with my work friends. This gave me a much needed burst of strength and comfort. I did not attend the game however...because:

* The doctors at Madison called and set up appointments for me with the Oncologist and Radiation Oncologist the afternoon of the Brewers Game. I went to those and got some good information. Bottom line, I should have more genetic testing done on my tumor, including PDL-1 which hadn't been done yet. I should also have another biopsy based on the PET scan and where it was felt they would get the most concrete and usable information. I was praised by the oncologist for finding the 2 small nodes and acting on them right away (this felt really good). The Radiation Oncologist told me if it were him he'd hit it and hit it hard, being as aggressive as possible. I asked about immunotherapy and they said there were some trials that I could possibly get into. They would communicate with my oncologist, Dr. Mohammed and he would get back to me with his plan.

* Last Friday I had day 1 at CTCA. I met with my nurse navigator, my internal physician, the chaplain services, and insurance/billing services. The internal MD entered the room with all my records, printed out, highlighted, tagged, underlined, etc. He had done a lot of reading on me! He asked me more questions about the course of my treatment, etc. He was assembling my team and told me he was the team captain, he was going to get me in front of any and all who are needed for my care. I left that day with a sense of peace, and many more appointments & tests scheduled.

* Monday was day 2 at CTCA, I had a PT eval for my arms an for any swelling from losing 36 lymph nodes. They gave me more exercises but said overall there wasn't much and i should be proud of what I was doing. I also had routine labs (CBC, CMP, Iron Studies, and tumor markers) and an echocardiogram to monitor my heart for any changes from the chemo.

* Monday I also had a follow up with the Pulmonologist who did my lung biopsy and is treating for pneumonia. Based on increased coughing since tapering down to 20 mg of prednisone, we decided to go back up to 30 mg right now. He also went over the results of the PET scan and said there was an area of consolidation in my right lung that lit up that he'd like to biopsy to see what we were dealing with, cancer or infection. He mentioned that typically my type of pneumonia is treated with a taper over 6 months, but we were trying to do 6 weeks because i needed to start Xeloda. He said it would be easy to get to and he would dicuss with Dr. Mohammed.

* Monday I also received a call from Dr. Mohammed to go over my visit with Madison. Dr. Mohammed recommended getting a biopsy of my spine because he was concerned with metastasis to the bone, and also to biopsy a lymph node in my neck. I mentioned the lung biopsy recommendation from the pulmonologist and he said he would talk to him but he didn't believe it was necessary. He wanted me to first get an MRI of my spine however since the CT scan didn't show what the PET scan showed. His office would call me to set this up.

* Tuesday (yesterday) was day 3 at CTCA. I met with a Mind Body Consultant and spoke about that care with him would be integrated with my treatment to help me handle the mental aspects of going through this. I met with a nutritionist who went over my diet and labs and made recommendations on how to keep my body as strong and Immune as possible. I met with a Natropathic MD who will incorporate natural supplements while I am going thru treatment to combat side effects and strengthen my immune system. They also offer acupuncture there as an adjunct treatment. I met with my Oncologist and this was incredible. He went over my history, asked about the recommendations from Dr. Mohammed's team, and gave his recommendations. He brought in a Pulmonologist at the same time to go over my PET scan and they came up with a plan to biopsy those areas on the PET scan that measured the highest, they used objective data, not just a "concern" to make their recommendation. They talked about treatments and how I could be treated for the recurrence and pneumonia at the same time. I could be treated with a lower dose of Xeloda and possibly immunotherapy at the same time. There was immunotherapy approved earlier this year by the FDA that they would consider and if it wasn't right there were other immunotherapies available. They would get genomic testing on my tumor and biopsies and decide on what was best. So many possibilities and hope. These two physicians put my mind at rest which had been racing nonstop for weeks. They discussed was my Tumor Marker Results which were all normal except one whch was 4 points above the high range. They said we may be looking at very early and limited disease.

One thing the pulmonologist said was Organizing Pneumonia is very inflammatory and could cause my lymph nodes to swell and other things to show up positive on the PET Scan. Wouldn't that be something...if it was just in my skin and the rest was because of the pneumonia.

Today I am taking it easy. I made a decision to move forward with CTCA for now, I will have the biopsy next Tuesday. I am holding off on the MRI of my spine. I'm uncomfortable with having my spine biopsied, I don't want part of my spine removed. Especially when I have no symptoms. Objectively the doctors at CTCA said the lit up portion of the spine didn't register very high and could likely just be inflammation. They also said it would not be an easy procedure and the area that was wanted could actually be missed because it was so small. I agree, let's go after the most significant area and figure it out. When I asked if the treatment would change if I did have a biopsy of my spine, they said that it would not, it would be treated the same, as metastatic breast disease and treatment types would depend on my genomic testing on the biopsies.

My peace of mind is slowly returning. My helplessness is slowly slipping away, and my hope feels renewed. I'm going to be OK. I read something that said that there is no such thing as dying. You're either alive, or your dead, nothing else. It's true. I am alive and will be alive for a long time. My story is just going to be a bit more interesting...

It was June 23rd when the evidence was discovered.

The young, academic orc (also known as an orcademic) who worked in the library of LNH Headquarters, whose real name was Fred Gnarshteeth but who had for various reasons which we will not go into here decided to call himself Anal-Retentive Archive Kid II...

...slapped a manila folder on the desk, and put a VHS tape down next to it. Behind said desk stood Fearless Leader, Co-Deputy Leader of the Legion of Net.Heroes. The other Co-Deputy Leaders, Catalyst Lass and Cheesecake-Eater Lad, stood next to him, peering down at the folder. The post-WikiLull Ultimate Ninja leaned against the wall, silently watching the goings-on.

"According to this evidence," said ARAK II, "in three days, the LNH will face a villain more powerful than any we've ever seen before."

"Sounds like every other Tuesday," said Cheesecake-Eater Lad, mindfully keeping things light.

"Where does said evidence come from?" said Fearless Leader, keeping on-point.

"Library Lad was working on going through old LNH records when he disappeared," said ARAK. "Taking things from the archives that are in danger of being forgotten, and putting them in an accessible database in our modern systems. I've been trying to keep it going in his absence."

"Good job!" bubbled Catalyst Lass. "That kind of community-minded spirit is what keeps the LNH the LNH."

ARAK nodded in acknowledgment, letting himself savor a little bubble of warmth in his belly, then continued briskly. "This is a twenty-five-year-old statement taken from an incident type 214."

"Time traveler who has come back on a last desperate mission to change the future," said Fearless Leader.

"Just so," said ARAK. "In this case, the time traveler was Poignant Death Lass."

"Who wouldn't even join the LNH until years later," said Catalyst Lass.

"Right," said ARAK. "The statement was taken by Sig.File Man. PDL, badly wounded but still mostly lucid, described a foe who came out of nowhere; a man filled with enormous cosmic power, burning out his body, and blaming the LNH for everything that had gone wrong with his life. He ripped through all of our strongest hitters, and was in the midst of blowing apart the LNHQ when she was sent back. After handing over the tape, she passed out, and was taken to sickbay, where..." He sighed. "Well, where you can guess what happened." 

Cheesecake-Eater Lad and Catalyst Lass looked up at Fearless Leader, who had been the sole survivor of a very similar attempt at averting worldwide disaster - an attempt that had failed. But he had grown since then, kept moving forward and recovering, and seen this Legion through many more moments of near-destruction. His face was calm, focused. "Right. And the tape?"

ARAK nodded, and signaled. wReamhack wheeled in a metal cart with a VCR and a CRT TV on it. ARAK slid the tape in and pressed play.

   The lawn of the LNHQ, everything quiet and normal. Suddenly, a streak of light flies through the air - and collides with a hastily-activated defense shield.

   Before the shield, a man floats in the sky, his features washed out by a crackling field of energy that surrounds him, bolts of blue, red, purple, white, lashing at the ground, curving off into space,. Where the energies intersect with the shield, it starts fading. "The LNH... you've been hurting me since I was a child... you killed my mother... NO MORE!" He rams his crackling hands against the shield, and it cracks apart! "REVENGE!"

   Kid Not Appearing In Any Retcon Hour Story, one of the LNH's heavy hitters, finally reaches the threat. They grapple, and the energy blasts into the Kid's form. "Nice try, net.asshole," grunts the man, "but you're going down like the Browns." The Kid cries out in agony, and holds on - but his form seems to wither and dwindle, and finally, he falls, a drained shell.

   The shield deactivates, and LNHers spill out of the HQ - whichever random members were in today. They engage, but the man plows thru them. "She was a sweet woman! She never did anything! Do you hate immigrants? Do you hate single mothers!? WHAT DID SHE EVER DO TO YOU!?" His own form withers as he moves inexorably forward, but he seems no less strong.

   Suddenly, Kid Kirby, the greatest cosmic hero of the Legion, appears, seated behind a huge, complicated-looking cannon. With a great flash of light, it pours a blast of coruscating energy into the man's form... but when the light dies down, the aura of energy is even stronger, occluding the man entirely. A searing blast from the man destroys the cannon, blows Kid Kirby to pieces, and blows a great hole in the side of LNHQ.

   "And now..." The man's voice is thin, halting. "Now..." He walks through the hole, into the heart of the LNHQ. "DIE!"

   From afar, the LNHQ can be seen glowing from within - and then a fireball consumes it - and spreads - and spreads, destroying, consuming the city--

   Nothing is left of Net.ropolis but a crater. The screen goes black.

Catalyst Lass let out a breath she hadn't been aware she'd been holding. Fearless Leader looked less calm, more grim. "That was... thorough."

ARAK tried not too look shaken - come on, he thought, you've watched this already, no surprises here. "Apparently, there was an automatic failsafe that recorded and sent the tape after everything came apart. Complete with the dramatic camera angles."

"I know Multi-Tasking Man has been working on something like that..." said Cheesecake-Eater Lad, his expression pale but determined.

"He's thorough too," said Fearless Leader, leaning back in his seat. "Anal-Retentive Archive Kid, your analysis?"

ARAK tapped his neatly-manicured claws on the desk. "As far as I can tell, this was our Legion, a Legion that had taken on the Bryttle Brothers, the Crossover Queen, the Mechanical Author... and we were defeated by someone we didn't even know about."

"But we should've known about him in this timeline," said Cheesecake-Eater Lad. "Why wasn't this flagged? We've had the next time the Time Crapper shows up scheduled for the last six months."

"It turns out there's a fairly simple answer to that, having to do, again, with time," said ARAK. "The statement was taken on June 26th, 1994. Twenty-five years before the incident, to the day..."

Cheesecake-Eater Lad's eyes went wide. "...and two days before..."

"Retcon Hour," said Catalyst Lass quietly. Her knuckles went white on the edge of the desk.

Retcon Hour, one of the messiest events in the Legion's history, involving multiple time-travelers creating a multitude of alternate timelines, then letting them overlap, overwrite, a million conflicting narratives at war. The LNH had defeated the mastermind behind it all, somehow, and Captain Continuity and the RACCelestial Madonna had put things back as they should have been - but everyone who had been through the final battle held onto strange, fragmented memories of things that had never been.

"After Retcon Hour, no one wanted to even think about changing the future," said Cheesecake-Eater Lad. "They were just happy that the LNH seemed to have a future."

ARAK nodded. "That makes sense. As far as I can tell, this file was put in the archives and left to gather dust. Nobody's thought about it in the last twenty-five years - until today."

"All right," said Fearless Leader, standing up. "We have three days of warning, and we're going to use them. First, we bring in all the forces we can. Every Legionnaire, ready to defend, on the day of the attack. Second, we search for any sign of this guy. He has to be out there somewhere. Maybe we can find a weakness. Maybe we can get to him before whatever triggered this attack happens."

"I'll rally the members!" said Catalyst Lass.

"I'll get our resources on the case," said Cheesecake-Eater Lad.

"Anal-Retentive Archive Kid," said Fearless Leader, "see if you can match the data on this to anything else in the archives. A villain we've fought before, a hero gone rogue, a cosmic confluence that fills random people with powers. Even if it seems like this guy came out of nowhere, he's got to have a past."

"Got it," said ARAK, standing straight and nodding firmly.

Catalyst Lass mm-hemed. Fearless Leader looked at her quizzically... "Oh, yes."

All three of the Co-Deputy Leaders looked to Ultimate Ninja. He stood up, cracked his knuckles, and gave a firm nod.

"Right," said Fearless Leader. "It's time to gather our strength. Legion... let's go!"

The call went out. Subgroups were pulled back from missions. Reservists were called to active duty. Characters whose writers had been inactive for years but were still technically on the roster gathered together offscreen.

Contraption Man and Multi-Tasking Man firmed up the LNH's defense grid. Occultism Kid, Shining Tungsten Magister and Kid Occultism Kid wove mystic wards. Johnny Stomper and Very Big Boy trained for combat with giants, while Doctor Stomper and Mashup Laq monitored for incursions from the Picoverse. Foreshadowing Lad reached out for clues and hints, while Kid Recap recalled the past. The leaders drafted plan after plan.

And ARAK dove deep into the archives, looking for the single clue that might save them all...

The day came. At the break of dawn, the massed forces of the Legion of Net.Heroes gathered on the lawn of the LNHQ. Scouts spread out through the city. Satellites recorded every spark of net.ahuman power being used, looking for the spark that would turn into a wildfire.

At full readiness, they waited.

...and they waited...

...and they waited.

By mid-morning, Cheesecake-Eater Lad, Frat Boy and Shake-n-Bake Lass were distributing breakfast in shifts, each LNHer on edge, ready to rise from their meal and fight.

By noon, a bunch of blankets had been brought out to spread on the lawn, and the LNHers were sitting to conserve their energy, having little conversations to keep their minds sharp, but still ready for the fight. Lunch was served in picnic baskets, and LNHers snacked on fortifying sandwiches and cheesecakes. Soda, juice, and bottles of water were pulled from a series of coolers and passed around.

By mid-afternoon, there were five games of Magic: The Gathering going on and three D&D campaigns, there was a screen set up showing all seven Vorkosigan Saga movies, and a Lego model of the LNHQ was in progress. Anal-Retentive Archive Kid II leaned against the door to the LNHQ, Catalyst Lass standing next to him and soaking in some sun.

ARAK sighed. "I've been searching for the last three days, and there's nothing. Not just no other appearances of this guy, but no evidence someone like him has ever existed. Like, take a look at this..." He held up a clipboard with the statement on it, and a transcript of the tape. "The guy was talking about how the LNH killed his mom. So I look up bystander fatalities. Not a common thing with us, but it can happen. Then I look up the children, follow up their histories... I found three that had ever shown powers, one of whom lives in Nepal now, one of whom is an investment banker in Cleveland, and one of whom is actually a member of the LNH. And here - it says that he spoke with a midwestern accent, and he was talking about 'the Browns'. So I started checking in the Cleveland area, but there's like a dozen active net.heroes over there and none of them had tangled with any cosmic villains in the last year." He shook his head. "It's all like that. Nothing comes together, there's no person for whom all of this fits." He looked up at Catalyst Lass. "I'm sorry. I lead us on a wild goose chase."

Cat smiled and put her hand on his shoulder. "Hey, it's okay. It's better to be proactive and have it turn out to be nothing than to ignore things and have them turn out to be something." She gestured out towards the crowd on the lawn. "Besides, you got everybody together for a picnic!"

"Mmmm... yeah, that's fair." ARAK looked over the gathered crowd, and tried to relax, to take an actual break. If only he could be sure, though...

"Oh, hey, Cat." ARAK looked up. Two men were coming towards them; one was older, and dressed in blues and grays, in that distinctive coordination that told ARAK he was a net.hero in a casual version of his costume; the other, younger, wearing a T-shirt and khaki shorts on the hot June day.

Catalyst Lass squeaked in surprise and delight. "Sig.File Man!" She pushed herself off the wall and wrapped him up in a tight hug, then let go, stepping back, holding him by the shoulders and looking him over. "It's been so long! How've you been? Who's this?"

Sig.File Man laughed good-naturedly. "Pretty good, thanks. And you're right, it's been forever." He gestured to the younger man. "This is my son, Adam. He lives in Net.ropolis. I flew over for a visit, and we heard the LNH was having some kind of shindig, so I decided to stop by."

"Your son?" Catalyst Lass clapped her hands. "I didn't know you had kids!"

Sig.File Man smiled. "Just the one. Remember after I left the LNH, and sent those Christmas cards with that cute girl and the little boy? That was him and his mom."

"Ohhh!" Cat grinned. "He's grown up so big and strong, good job! Does he have powers?"

"Well, yeah..." Sig.File Man leaned in and spoke quietly. "He's not interested in being a net.hero, but I figured you-all might be able to help train him anyway. He's got a kind of phobia of this place, or I would've brought him by years ago." He tilted his head towards Adam. "He's been going to a new therapist lately, and even coming here is a big step up."

"Ohhhh, of course!" trilled Cat. She stepped over to Adam. "Hullo there! I'm Catalyst Lass, Co-Deputy Leader of the Legion of Net.Heroes! Would you like a bit of a tour?"

"Oh, well..." Adam looked down, but then looked back up at Catalyst Lass, and was, like so many, swept up by her honest enthusiasm. "I guess we could."

He followed her into the LNHQ, leaving ARAK and Sig.File Man alone. ARAK looked down at the clipboard in his hand... oh, what an opportunity! "Say, Sig.File-- ah, I guess I should ask your real name."

"Sigmund Ampulle," said the former Sig.File Man, and stuck out his hand.

ARAK smiled. "Fred Gnarshteeth." They shook, and ARAK pointed to the clipboard. "Do you remember taking this statement? For obvious reasons, it's been on my mind today."

"Hmmm..." Sigmund took the clipboard and glanced over the top page. "Oh, yes, this..." He blinked, and leaned in, squinting at the date on top. "...ah. Of course..." He looked up at the gathering of LNHers. "Of course it would be today that we came by..."

ARAK tilted his head. "Er... pardon me?"

Sigmund chuckled. "Sorry, but... let me tell you a story..."

"Back in 1994, I was starting to drift away from the LNH. My old team, the Tantalizing Teens, had broken up a couple years before. Cliche Dude and SideKick Man had joined the Legion alongside me, but Cliche Dude had left for a space mission with Halls Jordan, and SideKick Man had turned out to be an evil robot all along. That stung, of course, and I was left with few close friends in the community. Then an old enemy ran me over with a bulldozer..."

"Eesh," said ARAK.

"Yeah, right? So I wasn't exactly having fun as an LNHer. But I didn't really know where I should go next."

"Then this fell in my lap. I figured, why not stop this before it starts? So I started making plans to go to Cleveland and investigate. Then..." Sigmund sucked in a breath. "Retcon Hour happened. I barely remember the bulk of it; I think at one point I was the leader of an all-singing all-dancing theater troupe version of the Legion?" He chuckled. "But it was big and it was stressful and it was just another indication that maybe this wasn't the kind of life for me. So those plans turned a bit longer-term than they used to be."

"I rented an apartment and tried to track down the 'mom' mentioned - doing some of the fancy detective work I hadn't really done since my Tantalizing Teens days. I found a few different women who fit the clues; but there was only one of them, Sarah Hernandez, who was raising a young son alone, ever since his male genetic donor had walked out on them. I kept an eye on the others, but made friends with Sarah, hoping that I could keep them out of any net.hero-related trouble."

"A young son..." ARAK looked over his shoulder at the LNHQ, then back at Sigmund, eyebrow raised.

"Yep." Sigmund nodded. "Sarah and I ended up falling in love by Christmas. By then, I'd heard about their backstory - how they'd been visiting Net.ropolis during Retcon Hour and been temporarily pulled into an alternate universe where the LNH were all these terrifying evil robots, and Adam had ended up rather traumatized."

"I see..." The pieces fit, indeed, thought ARAK.

"We got married a couple of years later," said Sigmund. "By then, I'd formally retired from the LNH and set up a detective agency. I figured, well, maybe just by coming here I'd prevented a tragedy."

"Only there was a tragedy still on its way. It turned out Sarah had a degenerative neural disease..." He sighed. "With no cure." 

"Oh..."  said ARAK, unsure how to respond. He settled on, "I'm so sorry."

Sigmund shook his head. "Don't worry about it. That was a long time ago, now. And, this time, I was there to support both of them thru it." He looked off into the distance. "It was during the stress of that whole mess that Adam's powers activated. Powers to channel cosmic energy. He was pretty freaked out by them, to be honest - freaked out by anything related to net.heroes - and for a while he thought he'd messed up his mom. The doctors told him he couldn't have, that that wasn't how disorders like this work. But he ended up repressing them pretty hard."

"He's doing better now, though?" said ARAK, encouragingly.

"Yeah. Not city-destroyingly better, thankfully. I guess, in the other timeline, without therapy, without anybody, he just ended up obsessing, and..." Sigmund raised his hands, motioned pushing something away. "Anyway. Yeah. Much better, and has been quite stable for a long time."

"Good," said ARAK, and meant it. "I guess, then, you've saved the city - and I can close this file, which is nearly as relieving."

Sigmund laughed. "Guess so." He handed the clipboard back. "Turns out there's a lot of ways to do this job."

"Yeah. And the people who take care of it before it becomes a problem don't get nearly enough credit for it." ARAK tucked the clipboard under his arm. "Would you like to come down to the archives and help me close this file out? I'd like to give you credit, after all this time."

"Aw. Well, far be it for me to maintain false modesty." Sigmund opened the door of the LNHQ, and ARAK stepped thru.

And the picnic ended up going on past dusk, until the moon rose over the city of Net.ropolis.

Outlining Acts One And Two Of My Romantic Political Thriller Film Scene By Scene

For PDL, I've been working on planning the story. Right now, I'm doing the treatment, basically just telling what will happen scene-by-scene before it's written out and how it would appear in the script. I'm trying to solve the plot/narrative and some character issues before I write the script properly. Anyway, here's the treatment!

Act One

Opening Image

The President is at the pulpit, giving a speech. Ash watches, somewhat bored. The Presidential Square is located in the center of Juno. It is beautiful, in the way that the massive scale of the Roman empire could invoke awe.

The Meet Cute

Ash runs into a beautiful security guard. They hit it off, immediately forming a connection. Banter, longing looks, the whole nine.

After the presidential speech, Hana starts to act on her plot to kill the president. She moves in.

Ash decides to follow her after a bit. He ends up seeing that she is trying to do something nefarious.

Hana pops out on stage, Ash on her heels. She tries to take out the president, but he stops her. Before she can get taken out, she takes Ash hostage. She makes an escape, with Ash as her prisoner.

Refusal | Rejection

Ash wakes up in a thatched house that is well-made. He has a splitting headache. His perception of Hana becomes marred by her act of terrorism. She comes in, and he’s on guard. He runs at her, and she pulls out her bow, aiming at him, telling him to sit down. He puts his hands up in surrender. When she lets her guard down, he tries to sneak up on her, and she uses something to make him go back to sleep.

Ash wakes up again, his fists clenched. He goes outside and sees Hana sitting on a rock, looking up at the stars. They’re on a small island. So small, this house is the biggest thing. They have a conversation that leads to a big argument… and realize that they have some massive differences. Hana tells Ash to get ready for their trip.

They go to a small pier, and Hana grabs a small boat, powered by the wind. Ash hops on, and they ride the waves.

They approach the Outer Ring, a place that almost looks magical to Ash, someone who’s been in the industrial world of Idyll all his life. The scraps and waste of the industrial world have been made into repurposed tools and landscapes of the Outer Ring. Hana tells him about the impact of what people are doing there in Idyll.

They ride up onto the coast of Circe, Hana’s village, and the heart of the Outer Ring. Hana is greeted by everyone; it’s a hero’s welcome. In the commotion, Ash makes a break for it.

Hana chases Ash, through the village and they end up near the Ringleader.

The leader of the outer ring introduces himself to Ash. After their chat, Ash is put into prison. He’s been there for a long time, with periodic visits from Hana. They have conversations occasionally, but things still feel tense.

Acceptance of the Quest | Giving Relationship a Chance

One day, Hana comes with a somber look in her eyes. She opens the gate, and Ash stumbles out, confused. She beckons him to follow her. They head to the Ringleader.

Through the town, people look at Ash; the smiles that are bestowed upon her fade once they see Ash. They’re watching for him to run. He notices an opening but doesn’t take it.

They go to the Ringleader. He presents Hana and Ash with a mission; to help cripple the government, to weaken them for a decisive attack. The rest of Hana’s team comes in. They discuss roles, responsibilities, and the plan, and they break.

Act Two

20ish beats

Trials and Temptations

After the meeting, Ash, Hana, and the team go to the armory. Ash asks a ton of questions and gets into it with Hana. The rest of the team watches, as the argument gets slightly more flirtatious as it goes on, even though it still has that undercurrent of anger to it. The flirting could seem like banter to the uninitiated. The team has never seen anyone press Hana like this, and they don’t have much context, so they wonder why this prisoner feels emboldened to talk so boldly to Hana.

They disembark, suited up and ready to go, plan in tow. They get on a small boat and ride away from Circe.

Riding across the nighttime waves, they see a mining barge, tilling off the coast. Ash doesn’t know what it is, and Hana tells him that it’s the reason the whole of the Outer Ring will never be able to progress. He doesn’t have anything to say. The rest of the team looks at one another.

MONTAGE – They manage the ride to the location…

Running through the plan again

They land on the sandbar and start phase one of their plan. Ash calls the Idyllian government and tells them that he was able to capture his captors. He tells the scripted lie that he was able to break free, and beached the captor’s ship on a sandbar, flinging them off and knocking them out. He tied them up and is calling for a pickup. He has Hana, public enemy number one.

Once the Idyllian army comes to pick them up, phase two of the plan commences. They grab the team and Hana, throw them in cages, and give Ash a hero’s comeback. He longingly looks at the team but accepts the warm welcome.

As they ride to Idyll, Ash is drinking and eating in decadence, much better than he has been until this point. However, something feels off… people that he would’ve seen as his friends, he feels different about… he feels grossed out by the wasteful behaviors, the callousness towards the people of the Outer Ring, the way that the team and Hana are being treated. It finally starts to click for him where Hana is coming from, even if he feels that her methods are extreme.

Once they make land, phase three commences. Ash gets information on where the execution will take place; it’ll be a public showcase of what happens to people who threaten Idyll.

We see Ash and her team get treated like animals. Spat at, poked, prodded.

In the dark of night, Ash comes to inform the team of what he’s learned. They yell at Ash for how comfortable he seemed, and he doesn’t have much to retort. He leaves to go get the keys, and the group has a few choice words for him as he leaves. Hana seems more reserved…she noticed the pain in his eyes.

Ash goes into the cafeteria, and everyone cheers as he enters. They start drinking and throwing a celebration. Ash puts on an act, but you can still feel that undercurrent of unhappiness.

Once the party ends and everyone retires for the night, Ash sneaks and grabs the key. He goes over to the cage and opens it up. Phase four commences.

MONTAGE: They spend the next few nights planning their escape and assault, getting little bits and bobs to help with their plan, and putting it on their boat.

The Idyllian boat lands on a Juno port, as the sun rises. During their disembarkation, cheers come from both sides of the road. People are lined up on the pier, and all down the walkway, cheering, throwing flowers, and such. They’re painted in patriotic colors, chanting national songs, and looking happier than ever. The tone changes once the prisoners come out. Jeering, throwing fruits, the whole nine.

Later, Ash is storing stuff in a safe house, commencing the next phase of their plan. He goes to see them again, and there’s much more tension b/w Hana and Ash. Hana wonders whether Ash is down for the cause in the way that she is. He assures her, but to no avail.

We focus on Hana for a bit, seeing her experience of being a prisoner in the capital. Shitty meals, and even worse treatment. The guards all look at her as everything they’re fighting against. Her team gets no better treatment. They count down the days until their public execution.

Midpoint | I Need You, but I Can’t Have You

With one day left to spare before the execution, the team is about to reach its breaking point. Hana is barely holding it together. She longs for home, to be out on the sea. A guard comes by, with sadness in his eyes. He’s younger than the rest; probably a low-ranking soldier in Idyll’s government. He comes to Hana and spins a tale about how Ash was acting on the ship over. He tells her about how happy he was to live in the way he did before this whole situation happened, and that he even heard a rumor that he said that he wanted to press the kill switch himself. At first, Hana denies it, but the private assures her. “Why would I lie to a dying woman? At the very least, you deserve the truth.” The fears Hana was feeling inside become palpable; there’s proof that Ash isn’t to be trusted.

Right as they’re wrapping up their conversation, Ash comes down and dismisses the guard. He comes to check up on Hana and to try and update her on what he’s been doing on the outside. As he explains, she looks at him blankly. Suddenly, she loses it. She starts yelling at him, grilling him about whether anything was real at all. He looks at her, confused. “Whatever you heard, I was just pretending-”. She’s not hearing it. She shuts down and tells him to leave. He gets tears in his eyes and starts pleading for her to listen. She starts making a huge ruckus, and guards start to rush in. They check on Ash and escort him out.

The Road Back

It’s the day of the execution. Ash is woken up, escorted to the chopping block, trailing behind the rest of her team in a chained line. As they walk out, the scene plays out similarly to how it did when they got off the boat; jeering, and tomatoes, but this time, they’re closer to the crowd, so the crowd is able to get a few licks in. By the time the group gets up to the chopping block, they have even more scars than what they had up until this point.

Once they scale the guillotine apparatus, they are greeted by Ash, some other officials, the executioner, and the president. The president gives a speech, riles the crowd up even more, and goes down to the front of the stage to watch from below. First up is one of the team members. Ash is putting on a fake smile, that disappears as soon as Hana looks at him. Her eyes are on fire. He can’t hold the look at her. As he’s trying to avoid Hana, they put one of the team members into the guillotine. Ash looks away as the slicer comes down, removing their head. Hana cries out, and Ash holds back tears. Hana looks over at him, yelling about him not having the right to cry. The next one is lined up and cut down. Ash looks this time; he forces himself to. As the blade slides down, over Hana’s screams, intermingled with the cheers from the crowd, he remembers all of them together, happy, even when things looked dire. As the blade finishes its descent, something in him breaks. Hana gets put onto the chopping block. She stares into the eyes of a smiling leader. As the blade comes down, she closes her eyes.

Suddenly, she hears a few shots fired, along with crackling. Small sparks of metal hit her skin, burning her. She yells and opens her bloodshot eyes to blinding light and gets dragged away. She can’t see behind her and falls into a hatch. She hits her head on the way down and knocks out.

Hana wakes up, and sees Ash in the corner, working on a concoction, facing away from her. She tries to hop up, but yelps in pain, prompting Ash to turn around, purse his lips, and put his fingers up to them. He points above them, and they can hear footsteps. He comes over and whispers, asking how she’s doing. That fire in her eyes hasn’t gone away, but she’s looking at her arms and legs, and most of the spots have healed up. He has a bowl in his hands, with a green paste that she taught him how to make. He lathers his hands up, and as he’s about to rub into a spot on her leg, she pulls away. He pleads for her to let him help, and after a few long moments, she obliges. She winces as he applies the balm; this is the worst burn yet. She looks up at him, and he gives her a weak, pained smile in return. After a few moments of massaging the balm onto the wound, Hana drifts into a deep slumber; the first real sleep that she’s had ever since she could remember.

Wakes up, to see Ash sleeping in the chair beside her bed. Her fire comes back, though not nearly as bright. She’s not as mad. She wobbles up to her feet and looks around. She sees half of the stuff they packed on their ship and gives off a dry laugh. Suddenly, she hears footsteps above her, and ducks down. She wakes Ash up and has him explain the situation. They get on the same page and agree on one thing; they must complete phase five of the plan. They just must figure out how to get to the prez, when everyone is after them both; there’s no hiding or trickery; they are public enemies.

The Fall (All is lost)

Once the footsteps dissipate, they peek outside. The whole execution platform had been scrubbed clean, save for the crime scene tape and the like. Once they come back in, they argue about how everything happened. They pour their hearts out to one another, and their exchange ends in a kiss.

They pack their bags, plan to get to the Presidential House, and disembark.

They sneak through Juno. Compared to the industrial beauty of before, the city takes a completely different look as martial law is in effect. People were getting beat on the side of the streets, rioting and looting, the whole nine.

The Breakup (Dark Night of the Soul)

They sneak into the base. As they’re inside, a sniper catches one of them off-guard and fires. Ash manages to save Hana, but his arm gets a giant hole ripped through it. Guards swarm them, and Ash makes a distraction for them to get Hana out of the way. Hana doesn’t let him sacrifice himself. She stays at his side as people swarm them to take them down.

The Sacrifice (of the mission)

Hana and Ash fight the guards, and it seems like they’re gaining the upper hand. Suddenly, a wave of special forces comes out and tries to take them down. Ash is still bleeding; the only reason he’s been able to continue fighting is adrenaline. He decides that Hana’s way isn’t working, and to take things into his own hands. He decides that instead of the mission or their relationship, he’s picking Hana’s survival.

This Month In History - October

Let’s raise a glass to several landmark anniversaries this month:

Oct. 3, 1997: The Matchmaker opens

In Oct. 1997, the Janeane Garofalo rom-com was released. Probably wondering why I am including this on the list of landmark pop culture anniversaries right? I worked on the film, that’s why. The film was filmed mostly in Ireland and little bit in Boston. In the Spring of 1997, I had just finished working as a Location Intern on Ted Demme’s Monument Ave, the first major movie I ever worked on. They were doing some reshoots on The Matchmaker, so they brought in a bunch of the Monument Ave crew since that had just wrapped. The Location Manager called and asked if I could work on the shoot in Faneuil Hall in Boston. I was tasked with being in front of Clark’s bar where they had some lights set up and making sure no drunk idiots messed with the lights and equipment. I also held traffic during select shots. It was far from glamorous, but it was cool to say I was a part of a movie. I saw the film when it premiered at the Boston Film Festival in Sept. 1997 and then saw it again opening weekend in Oct. 1997. It’s kinda corny, but better than most people think. Happy 25 The Matchmaker! 

Oct. 5, 1962: Dr. No opens in UK

In Oct. 1962, the first James Bond movie was released in the U.K. The U.S. didn’t get it until May 1963. This and Goldfinger are my two favorite 007 movies. Being the first one it set the tone for the character and the films. Happy 60th Dr. No!

Oct. 11, 2022: Punch Drunk Love and Bowling for Columbine open

In October 2022, Paul Thomas Anderson’s 4th film was released (big month for PTA anniversaries)! Coming off Magnolia, PTA went in a very different direction with this dark rom-com starring Adam Sandler of all people, but the Sandman rose to the dramatic challenges as Barry Egan, a lonely man with social anxiety whose life changes when he discovers a loophole in a pudding promotion, meeting his sister’s co-worker, calls a sex line, and oh yeah - takes in an abandoned harmonium. Sandler was cast way far against type in contrast with his goofy comedies, but it works here. And who can forget the showdown with the sleazy Mattress Man played by Philip Seymour Hoffman? I attended an advance screening in NYC with a Q&A with PTA, Sandler and producer JoAnne Sellar. After the screening outside, I approached PTA (who I met at a Magnolia screening in 2000) and I actually got choked up as I thanked him for dedicating the film to Ted Demme. He was very appreciative. PDL got a mixed response when it was released, but over time more and more people have mentioned how good it is, especially as Sandler has done more dramatic work. Happy 20th PDL!

On the same day in October 2002, Michael Moore’s greatest documentary was released (and that’s saying something). It begins examining the events of the Columbine Massacre in 1999 and then he dug deeper to look at America’s gun violence. I’ve been a fan of Moore’s docs (notably Roger and Me and Fahrenheit 9/11), but with this one he was going big. He wasn’t afraid to confront the enemies on camera. While some have criticized his work for stretching the truth or over-glorifying Canada, he made his point and did it in a thought-provoking and entertaining way. Happy 20th BFC!

The Pitch for My Romantic Tragedy-Thriller

Hi everyone, for today’s Project Dangerous Lovers update, we’ll be going over the Pitch Doc! For the full thing, and any other files relating to the project, go to the Drive folder.

Why a Pitch Doc?

So, I’m super into like business and entrepreneurship, and in that process, you make pitches a lot earlier than you would in the creative process. In my mind, PDL will be something that is made for people to take in and enjoy, so thinking early about what makes it appealing helps me a lot going into the writing and ideation process. The way I write these, it forces me to answer some questions that I haven’t. By the end, I have more of a specific feeling for what I want to do, going into the process of actually writing the script.

Intro

So one thing that was important to me is to capture the vibe of what the story will be using the document's design. This comes from seeing docs like the bibles for batman the animated series and Stranger Things. Both of these really place you into the world of the show, and with the stranger things, one almost feels diegetic. It’s super cool.

I also talk about the origin of this story and what it’s about since in pitching, you’re trying to sell the story, but you’re trying to sell yourself just as much.

Overview

After that, I go through an Act by Act breakdown of what happens in the story. The first act is our main character getting his world turned upside down. The next act is him realizing how to live in the new world and seeing his place. The final act is about changing the world for everyone and seeing the consequences of that.

World, Tone, and Style

I imagine the world of PDL to be beautiful but dark, in the vein of the Avatar series of movies. It’ll almost have the feel of an adventure movie locale, but have more of a thriller vibe overall. It’ll be near future alternate universe vibes, so technology will be different, with many things seeming more form over (literal) function. For example, Idyll, the nation in which the story takes place, will have its soldiers wearing fantastic masks that might seem counterintuitive to combat functionality in real life. In the world, it’ll be great.

Character

As of now, I have two main characters, Ashton and Hana. They come from different worlds, and that informs their interactions and values. Ashton comes from the ruling class, and Hana grew up as a member of the proletariat, through and through. One has had to claw their way through life to survive, and the other has been given everything, falling upwards. I hope this stuff will make the romance fun and interesting, and all of the trappings around it will make it very interesting.

The Future

Since I just can’t help myself, I’ve started thinking about ways in which the story can continue. I think that a story arc I might’ve mentioned before is Takedown → Rebuild → Recreate old issues, where by the end of this film, we see hints that maybe the people running the show aren’t the best for this. We get a little period of peace, but it doesn’t really last, and then the last movie is showing the new normal settling in, and it starts to feel like the world of the start of the first movie.

And that’s pretty much the skinny! As I said, the whole pitch doc will be in Google Drive if you want to check it out. For this week, I’ll be laying out the story beats, so we can get into the whole story!

The Purpose Driven Life: What On Earth Am I Here For?

I was lost and I tried my best to cope up with life by listening and reading books that will help me to overcome my insecurities and find myself again.

I must admit that I sometimes forget to read this book since I am quite busy with other things but I still make it a point that I pray every single day from the moment that I wake up and before I sleep at night.I picked up the PDL learning that it will strengthen my faith and hoping that I will find answers to my life questions.

I just want to share my notes because as the book says that worship is sharing words of God. :) The book is a 40 day program that will help us to know our purpose and be the best version of ourselves.

DAY 1:  One of the reasons why people feel miserable because they thought that life is all about them but our life’s purpose if God. Life isn’t about us but it’s all about God. God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him and He wants us to focus on our future not on our past.

“Everything got started in him and find its purpose in Him.” Colossians 1:16B

DAY 2: I am not an accident!

God made us for a reason. We can’t make God stop loving us whether we are good or bad. God isn’t moody. He made us to love us. ( my favorite part of Day 2 realization)

“No man can love me as much as God loves me.”

Don’t just look withing yourself to know your purpose but talk to God like a manual and know your purpose. We need to feel the love of God and yes, we will never feel empty. He doesn’t want you to waste your life because you matter to god and for that reason, you need to learn how to love yourself.

God is not disappointed in you because He knows everything  and he planned your days before you are born so don’t ever think of yourself as a failure.  Learn to trust God.

Day 3: Everyone’s Life is Driven by something

“ We are products of our past but we don’t have to be a prisoners of it.”

God specializes in giving people a fresh start. Dont be afraid! Fear is a self imposed prison that will keep you from becoming what God intends you to be.

In order for you to have a peace of mind:  

a.)You need to accept the things that you cannot change.

b.) Trust in God’s loving care.

c.) Surrender to God’s control. Don’t find with God because God knows better.

You can have peace if you have peace with God. Don’t cut the hope that God will give you. God has a plan in your life that includes pain to let you grow.

Day 4:  God will never leave you

Day 5:  The Way You See Your Life Shapes You

Do not conform yourselves to the standard of this world but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind then you will be able to know the will of God.

Day 6: Don’t be dependent on material things because life on Earth is temporary.

Day 7: We can bring glory to God by worshipping Him, loving other believers and telling people about how great He is.

Day 8: We are planned for God’s pleasure

God was there smiling at our birth. He wanted us to be alive and our arrival gave him great pleasure.

Day 9: Pleasing Him and making Him smile is our purpose

He smiles when we love him supremely, trust Him and when we use our abilities.

“God made us to love us but He wants us to love Him back”

Day 10:  Offering yourself to God is what our worship is all about. We all need to surrender to God because He loves us more than we can imagine, we all need to trust Him.

I’ll continue to share things after I read few chapters again but for now I want to share with you some of the highlights of my first 10 days of reading my purpose driven life. I am so happy that I was able to read a book that helps me to know myself more.

Just a summary of Italian prime ministers over the last ten years

As you may know from my blog, I am Italian, and, sometimes, one of the things that some Italians would say while talking about politics is that “we haven’t had an elected President since 2011”.

Now, before I begin, I should probably explain what happens in Italy when we elect our leaders.

At the end of every legislation (which should last for 5 years, but it can be shortened for various reasons, like with what happened in 2008, when the government simply didn’t have the backing of the parliament, so new elections were called up 2 years after the previous ones), Italian citizens are called to vote for the parliamentary composition. If you are 18 or older, you can vote for the Chamber of Deputies, but, if you are 25 or older, you can also vote for the Senate of the Republic.

What happens next is that, once the elections are over, the parliamentary seats are shared between political groups based on the votes they received. Then, it is the job of the parliament to gather around and elect someone who could be the President of the Republic (those elections are sometimes funny when there are deputies or senators who don’t want to vote for a specific person, so they jokingly nominate celebrities, artists and so on) for a mandate that lasts seven years.

Afterwards, it is the President of the Republic who, after talking to the leaders of every political group, has to nominate a President of the Cabinet (prime minister) who can have the backing of the majority of the seats.

As a result, you may noticed that at no point I mentioned that we directly vote for either the President of the Republic or for the President of the Cabinet.

However, the issue has been that, especially in the eras between the Berlusconi governments (who has been prime minister four times between 1994 and 2011), it was common that the leader of the party (or coalition) who received most nominations would then become the prime minister. Berlusconi himself even used to have “Berlusconi Presidente” written inside the logo of his party, because it was taken for granted that, if Forza Italia (or the PDL in 2008) would have won the elections, he was going to lead the cabinet.

Still, it was not written in stone that this has to be the case all the time, which is why we have had some interesting situations in the last 10 years. Now, let me go in chronological order.

In 2011, after three years of government, Berlusconi lost the parliament’s trust after continuous scandals revolving around him. As a result, 86 year old President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano (I have to specify his age because it will be relevant soon) ended up for the second time during his mandate without a government. However, unlike the first time, in which he called for new elections, he simply decided to form a “technical government” (that is, a government where the various ministers aren’t politicians, but experts in those fields).

To lead that “technical government”, Napolitano nominated economist Mario Monti as prime minister. Now, since the law specifies that the prime minister must be in parliament, he nominated Monti as senator for life.

Monti, then, remained in charge until the natural end of the legislation, in 2013, when new elections took place.

However, the Italian political scenario was entering a period of chaos and confusion. The centre-right and centre-left coalitions, which usually were the leaders in politics after the “Mani Pulite” scandal of the early ‘90s, were now standing next to a new party, the Five Star Movement, who fit itself as centre. As a result, Italy was now split politically in three parts, and that was not a good sign, since there was the need to form a new cabinet.

The chaos that emerged was such that nobody agreed on who would have to become the President of the Republic, and so there was a period of time where Italy had technically no head of state (and it coincided with Pope Benedict XVI’s abdication, something that was not lost on some people). As a result, Napolitano agreed to let them elect him once more for a second mandate, something that had never happened in Italy ever since it became a Republic in 1946.

Napolitano, who was 88, criticised them for not agreeing on what to do to govern Italy, and he told them that he was going to remain as President up until time would have let him, due to his advanced age, in hopes that the situation would have stabilised by then.

After a while, Democratic Party member Enrico Letta was appointed as prime minister, a position which he held for less than a year.

In fact, after some months, the newly elected secretary of his party took his place, and thus began Matteo Renzi’s “one thousand days of government”, because that is, more or less, for how long he remained in charge.

Of course, Renzi’s haters disliked his move of replacing Letta, with some even comparing it to a coup, despite the fact that nothing changed in the parliament after that.

Still, during this government, Napolitano, now 90, decided to step aside, and, in a more stable parliamentary situation, a new President of the Republic was found in Sergio Mattarella in 2015.

Renzi’s government lasted until late 2016, because he called for a constitutional referendum, while promising that, should the changes he wanted to make lose, he would quit as prime minister, something that he did that same night.

Thus, deputy Paolo Gentiloni, a member of the parliament since 2001 who comes from a noble family tied into politics for over a hundred years, became prime minister for the remaining year and a half of the legislation.

As you may have noticed, between 2011 and 2018, Italy had so far had Monti, Letta, Renzi and Gentiloni as prime ministers, but we are not done yet.

Remember when I mentioned that Italian politics is now split into three groups? Well, the 2018 elections just made those divisions more rock solid, which ended up in a scenario where none of them had a clear majority on its own.

For instance, the Five Star Movement was the party who won the majority of the votes, but, as a coalition, the centre-right had the upper hand. Thus, a larger coalition was formed under their leaders, Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini. However, none of them would become the prime minister, as Di Maio suggested a neutral figure as the leader.

This is when professor Giuseppe Conte stepped in, and he had to form the government twice. Why? Because the aforementioned Salvini started acting on his behalf, even going as far as demanding full powers, so Conte called him out in the parliament and resigned, only to be brought once again as prime minister after a new government was put in charge, this time without Salvini.

Conte has stayed as prime minister throughout the entirety of 2020, in the difficult lockdowns related to Covid-19. Still, apparently Italian politicians decided that, instead of joining forces to let our country made it out of this trying times, they had to cause instability, so the parliament made Conte fall too.

And this is how, since last winter, we ended up with our sixth prime minister in a decade, as Mario Draghi, former president of the Central European Bank, was appointed by Mattarella to do whatever it takes to help Italy.

I wanted to write this long article about Italian politics in the last decade. I don’t know how many would read it, but, you know, I’m the kind of person that thinks “if I can’t find something I want to read, I will make it myself”.

Publishing & Distribution

Back in month one of the Entertainment Business program at Full Sail University, in the Mastery course, I devised initial goals for the Publishing & Distribution course in my PDL Timeline. These goals were as followed: learning how to develop an effective publishing and distribution plan for my business, gaining an understanding of the roles of Media Publishing and Distribution in the Entertainment industry, and learning about the current issues affecting these two roles. When revisiting these goals and thinking back to what my understanding was of publishing and distribution, I must say that although I was aware that distributing involved selling products in stores and online, in my case music (physical albums, single downloads, merchandise, etc.), I was unaware that it goes hand-in-hand with publishing. I did not know what publishing truly was for that matter, as I thought it dealt with strictly literary works. I had to start the course to realize that all musical works have publishers as well, which are the companies that own and release the song/album. Anything that is distributed has a publisher, as I learned that if you do not publish something there is no way you can officially distribute it. I was able to analyze the different aggregator sites available for self-publishing during my Week 3 Discussion post assignment, which gave me insight on which would suite myself and/or the artist I manage the best. I established that at the early stage of the artist’s career, which in this case would be for publishing his/her first release, CDBaby would be the best platform to go with.

Another important part of publishing and distribution that I had the opportunity to learn this month is that in order to receive the highest potential for success on your creative works, it is extremely beneficial to have an established publisher release and distribute them for you. This way they will reach the largest possible audience, since scoring a publishing deal isn’t something any artist or their manager can simply do on their own unless they have some special connections with a label. A scenario such as that is highly unlikely, and therefore the need for an agent is prevalent, someone who can mediate between an independent artist and a huge company. A record company such as Sony or Universal isn’t going to take submissions from someone who isn’t already a big moneymaker in the industry, and therefore an agent can mediate for the artist to get their music in front of the big publishing entities. I learned how to draft a query letter to an agent the proper way, which can come in handy big time as I will now know how to go about finding a publisher. In order to secure that publishing deal, the artist or manager will then need some supporting materials to provide to him/her so that he/she can shop the work around in the best possible fashion. A press kit is exactly what will fulfill this, which is something we learned how to create. I was able to produce my very own electronic press kit, and it turned out very nice and to be something I am proud of. I look forward to learning more throughout the rest of the course and will definitely be using the concepts i’ve learned so far, as well as my query letter and EPK.

  Clod9: Today I’m interviewing OldManTup about his experiences in Draft League. How Many draft leagues have you been in?

OldManTup: I started off in the GBA, I did a few stints in the PPL D2, I was in the NSTL, another i can’t remember, the NPA so at least 5.

  C9: Which out of those was your favorite draft league?

Tup: The one i can’t remember i had a really good team. It was relatively broken and under appreciated. I really liked my run the NPA the Season I was there. A lot of really good people play in that league and I made my first playoff run.

  C9: What do you think is essential to a good draft? Something you would always want to plan to have on your team?

Tup: When people ask me what people should look for in their draft the first thing i tell them is to establish what your particular playstyle is going to be in the draft. It doesn’t matter if you have the 6 most broken mons the league you draft in, if they don’t fit a playstyle that you are effective utilizing you are not going to be successful. You might win some matches , but all in all you are not going to enjoy the way you play and you are not going to have the success you should despite how good you draft. Someone from the league (PDL) asked my that question and they showed me a draft plan. I was like, “This is the team that you presented, this is how that team is going to play. Is that your playstyle”. That was something they hadn’t thought about. That is something that happened to me the first times I drafted and I struggled. I struggled hard. I was drafting good mons as opposed to drafting mons I’m familiar with or that fit a playstyle that I am comfortable with. To finish off this question with a story. If I were to sit down and make a draft plan. I like bulky mons. I like having switch ins to everything. Mons like Hippowdon, mons like Zygarde 50% (Which is banned in PDL). Mons like that. Mons that can take a hit and sustain themselves. Those are the cores of my team. As well as pivot mons so volt switch and u-turn. Those are the things i look for when building a team. So you need to make a list. These are the thing I need on a team to be successful. Then pick what you think is most important to you. For me If I see Zygarde 50% in a league, granted I’ve only gotten it twice, but it’s a mon I know is successful and I can run with. Another mon I like to draft first round is Excadrill. It has fantastic typing, underappreciated bulk with its hit points. Even without sand support it can fit on most teams.

  C9: You have a really interesting take on what is essential for a good draft. A lot of the times you hear you need a couple things that can set up rocks or mons that can get rid of hazards. Which makes you pick specific mons versus what you are saying which is to pick to your playstyle.

Tup: Now for a lot of people that is high on their priority with. It is just my specific playstyle. I don’t 100% need SR on one of my top value mons in order to be successful in the way i play. I don’t draft mons that are weak to SR so hazard removal isn’t high on my list. If the people drafting are use to OU then that is going to be higher up on their list of thing than someone who just plays to the beat of their own drum.

  C9: What’s your worst habit you have when preparing for a draft?

Tup: My worst habit when trying to prepare for a draft, is leaning to hard on the people who are helping me with my draft. (Front Office). A lot of the times when I’ve drafted not to my playstyle, I’ve leaned too hard on the recommendation of the people who drafted good mons for my team and not good mons for me. A good example, is the GBA D-league S2, when M&J TV was debuting in draft format. He was paired up with MegaMogwai (Who was a coach at the time). Mogwai drafted him a beast of a team. But it wasn’t a team M&J TV could play with so he struggled. It depends on what you plan on going into the league to do. Are you going to have fun, hang out with friends, or are you going to be more competitive. I try to balance them both but the competitiveness usually ends up a little higher. That’s why you have to draft a team that you enjoy because you are going to have to enjoy it whether you win or lose. You don’t want to sit there with a team, shaking your head asking yourself, “Why did I draft all these pokemon” A lot people can fall into the trap of, “Oh this is really good. A lot of top draft competitors take it so I’ll be successful with it.”

  C9: What would be your Round 1 Pick 1 if you couldn’t pick Zygarde 50%?

Tup: It depends on the league that I’m in. A lot of the leagues that I’m still affiliated with, I’ve been with for so long that I’m familiar with the draft tendencies of the coaches I’m playing with, That I know when i can let something that in one league i have to pick in Round 1, I can let slide a few rounds. In the GBA particularly one that comes to mind is, my favorite mega to draft in Ultra Sun Ultra Moon, is M-Beedrill and that never ever gets picked.

  C9: Why do you like M-Beedrill so much?

Tup: M-Beedrill has like 130-150 attack plus adaptability. So you have Adaptability U-Turn and that does so much damage. My last match in the UUTC was against J3di DJ. I had M-Beedrill out and he had Galvantula. Granted I was Adamant M-Beedrill but it clean one shot it. I just wanted switch priority. I think it’s underrated. It doesn’t have the best coverage and has maybe 3 sets but its so good. Especially in draft. There are not a lot of things on every team that are common counters to what M-Beedrill brings to the table. Most teams have 1-2 things that stand in the way of M-Beedrill setting up and just crapping all over a team. This isn’t the case for OU since Lando or Celesteela Counter it.

  C9:  I know you were a part of the NPA which is a 24 person draft. The PDL is the same with a 24 person draft with is very different between the standard 16 team draft. What are the main differences you’ve realized between the 24 person draft and the 16 person draft?

Tup: The things I’ve noticed; The more people you have in a draft the sooner you want to pick your low tier value mons. Usually they stack the upper tiers and the lower tiers (T4, T5) are just filled with the leftover stuff and nobody has anything. There are 3-4  good mons, Don’t get wrong there are good mons, but the crem dela crem stuff that you want that can fit into a team you might have to take Rounds 3,4,5 as opposed to letting it fall to your 7,8,9 pick. Other than that you don’t plan heavily when you have a draft of that many people, cause if you over plan, you are redrawing your draft plan 3-5 times in a single round.  

  C9: Where do you want to be placed in a draft/ Where do you think is most optimal ?

Tup: Optimal is either the wheel picks, First or last, or relatively close to that because generally you are getting relatively close picks. It’s forever between you next picks but you have guaranteed a pair of mons that you can pair together, that give you an optimal synergy for your team. I’ve noticed that when I’ve been there, it’s easier to build a more synergetic team. Opposed to when you are in the middle of the draft, and I’ve been there and I hate it, it’s like you get to pick 1 mon and you have to hope that something that pairs well with that mon is available 16 – 30 picks later. You find a lot more parody in a league with more people, because no one ends up with a really broken team because they got good picks in the draft.

  C9: Is there any pokemon that you’ve hated going up against or causes annoyance?

Tup: It usually is something i like to play with. Gliscor is what first comes to mind, cause if you have a competent opponent it will just ruin your day, unless you happen to knock it’s toxic orb off or burn it when it switches in the first time. It gets healing through that. Sustainability through roost. It’s 4x weak to ice but if the guy has a good draft it is just one of the mons that doesn’t have to be terribly bulky cause it has enough speed and power and can just rain on your parade.

  C9: The first thing that comes to my mind is Mamoswine because I find between the ground and ice moves most teams don’t have a good switch into it but onto a different topic, What advice do you have for people that are on a losing streak, especially if you start off behind.

Tup: I actually have a lot of experience on this topic because I am the all time losingest coach in the GBA. The first season I only had 1 win and i won a crit. One of the last seasons i was win less. I never made playoffs in the GBA and I think the best I’ve done is an even win loss record. But i mean, Keep your head up. Learn from your mistakes. All i can say is watch your replay. Figure out where you went wrong and try to not make that mistake again. There are some matches that you are not going to win based off your teams match up vs another team. There was a team in the UUTC, one week where i was looking and the guys team and I thought, “Unless the guy plays (t)rubbish I’m not going to win.” It wasn’t that i didn’t have confidence in myself it was just the 10 he had vs the 10 i had , I just didn’t have an answer for certain mons. Keep your head up and push on through. Understand that nobody is perfect and nobody wins all their games in these formats. Make it learning experience and try to come back better the next week.

  C9: Who do you think is the best player  for someone new to watch to learn about draft league format and it’s strategies?

Tup: There are a couple of people that come to mind. First is Pokeaim, if you don’t know him or heard of him your head is under a rock cause i think he is the most popular and successful person when it comes to what we do on the youtube. Another is PokeMEN aka John. He just became PG so you can watch it with your kids. He is very good about explaining what is going on in his matches. El Scizor from the GBA, if you can get through his thick German accent, he is very good, especially with his team builders. He usually has very detailed descriptions and shows his evs on screen. He almost always goes through explaining why things are the way they are. Gym Leader Geo is one of my favorite people I’ve ever played draft format with. He always plays so unique it’s someone you can watch to get a better understanding of how to put unique techs into your team that will help you beat things.   C9: What is a mon you think is underrated in draft league format?

Tup: The first one that comes to mind, because it is one of my favorites to use is Miltank. Miltank is almost always nestled in T4,T5 and it is SO good. It plays the cleric role, it sets rocks, it has 100 base speed and it’s a tank! IT can set up, it has thick fat and sap sipper. You are stacking resistances on top of your self. Ice and fire are usually two of the biggest weaknesses you have worry about synergy wise and having a Pokemon in your back pocket that can resist both of those and is only weak to fighting which is super easy to overcome in draft league. I love it. I can sit in there for day and heal up, or curse set up, and even body slam to spread around that yellow magic (Paralysis). Another mon, is Mismagius. That thing needs a team around it. It doesn’t work on every team. It has 105 speed, and insane special bulky which is overlooked. It has just enough special attack to be useful, and can calm mind or nasty plot up. I think it’s undervalued and when put in the right team in an attacking role it can just drop bombs.

  C9: Besides the GBA Season 9 are you in any other leagues and will you be uploading more draft content to your youTube?

Tup: Not currently. The only other league im active in is the NPA and I don’t think they are coming back until Gen 8. While I’m in the GBA and NPA I try not to do too many other things since they are large platforms and it takes a lot more time to provide the content that that platform requires.

  C9: As a parent, and a Pokemon fan, have you brought the world of Pokemon onto your children’s lives and do they enjoy it?

Tup: My older daughter does more than my younger daughter. My older daughter is a spitting image of me when it comes to things in nerd culture go. We all go out and do Pokemon GOing together, we always try and do the community days. For those that don’t know my children are soon to be 13 and 8. My oldest daughter plays the game, not competitive, just enjoying the game the way it should be enjoyed.

  C9: Do you ever show them your video and get their feedback?

Tup: My oldest daughter is subscribed to my channel and watches them but not so much. She isn’t huge into competitive battling. It’s more like, “Dad you have this pokemon on your team and it’s cute,you should have used that one” Which makes perfect sense.

Tup: IT was in the GBA and it was only my favorite because it was successful. I was playing against Foofoo who was a coach in the GBA at the time. He had a crobat and it was his last mon. I bluffed the entire match that I was scarf heracross and it wasn’t. I had 3 left and he had 1. He was just convinced that he was getting a stone edge to the face and i clicked Earthquake. He was faster than me and went for roost. So he grounded himself and I went for Earthquake. I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much until I watched it. He live records so i got to see his live reaction when he uploaded his video. I’m not good at bluffing i’ll be 100% transparent with that and it worked and he was just aghast that he was faster than me.

Landon Donovan's Indoor Soccer Debut with San Diego Sockers

SAN DIEGO -- The play was vintage Landon Donovan. A right-footed pass took three defenders and the goalkeeper out of the play, allowing a teammate to score at the far post. The crowd roared, his teammates celebrated.

At which point, one could not help but notice the surroundings. The venue was not Dignity Health Sports Park, the renamed home of Donovan's beloved LA Galaxy. Nor was it any of the World Cup venues he has graced over the years. Rather, it was the 62-year-old Pechanga Arena -- formerly the San Diego Sports Arena -- a venue that, to put it kindly, is somewhat lacking in charm.

He had a couple of good early chances that were saved, but by the end, with a couple of fresh turf burns on his legs, he seemed content to provide cover defensively as fatigue set in.

"I got tired in the end, just like mentally," he told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview. "It's one thing to physically push through it, but mentally you get tired because there's so much going on. Even when you're on the bench there's so much going on that you have to stay tuned to, and I'm not mentally fit in that way. I haven't done this in a year. That piece of it is mentally tiring. I'm sure when I have time to go back and watch, I can learn from it, and it will be easier next time.

"I tried to make an impact in some ways. I tried to do a good job defensively and help out. That's not going to show up on a score sheet, but do things and try to help your team win. That's ingrained in me, that's something I'm proud of. I'd give myself a B on the night, and hopefully we get in the A's soon."

None of this was a surprise to Sockers head coach Phil Salvagio, a longtime veteran of the indoor game. He noted that it took Donovan two weeks before he scored a goal in practice, just two days before Friday's match, before adding that the U.S. soccer legend got his second a few minutes later.

"It's the indoor game," Salvagio said. "You think you're going to get a lot of touches. You know what? You saw a little bit that [Donovan] wasn't in the right spots at times. He's going to get it. He had a couple great opportunities on free kicks and power plays. It will come to him.

"Indoor, it takes a normal player about 40 games to get used to it and really know what is going on. There's a lot of strategy, you're changing in [shifts], how to change, when to change, all that is new. Who to mark up, when to mark up. And it's fast. It's end-to-end. If you make a mistake, the other team has a shot on goal."

The broader question centers on a familiar refrain concerning un-retirements: Why? Donovan does not need the money, although the $250,000 he will make between now and the end of the season in April, which is about five times what the next highest-paid player in the league earns, will not hurt.

Off the pitch, Donovan has certainly been busy. He has done broadcasting work and been involved in a bid to bring an MLS franchise to his new home city of San Diego; disappointment lingers that a ballot initiative to build a new stadium was defeated in favor of a competing stadium proposal.

"But I just felt sad for the soccer community [after Soccer City]. And then I came to realize, we have a great club here, a great franchise here. It's not what people expect when they think of soccer, but this is an entertaining, fun game. It's really fun for fans to come and check out. I think having the ability to stay involved is fun for me. And my family gets to come."

Taking in a Sockers game opens a window into a world not often seen, where grinding to grow the game by doing the jobs of two or three people is the norm. Salvagio is the team's former goalkeeper and owns a gym on the side, and the players are no less devoted, despite a total payroll of under $200,000, not counting Donovan.

On the roster, there is a considerable contingent from Mexico, many of whom will return to their home country at the end of the season, as well as several soccer lifers. Leading scorer Kraig Chiles, who spent a year playing for Chivas USA in 2008, doubles as director of coaching for area club Cardiff Mustangs, whose staff also includes Sockers Brian Farber, Eddie Velez, and Chad Haggerty.

San Diego had the best record in the league without Donovan, but outwardly there is no jealousy about his presence or paycheck, due to his professionalism and ability: "It's been exciting. There's been a boost of morale. A shot of energy across the team and the league in general," Chiles said.

"[Donovan's] just another guy on the team," forward Brian Farber said. "There's nothing crazy. The vibe is we want him to fit in; he's fitting in. Just try to make him feel normal. But at the same we know what this is, who he is and what he is. We're not dumb, we're not blind. We love the fact that he's signed here with us."

In the Sockers locker room before kickoff, Donovan is as engaged as anyone, studying Salvagio's tactical plan on the whiteboard, asking questions and conversing with Chiles and goalkeeper Boris Pardo about the team's approach.

A four-goal flurry in the second period -- including a Donovan-assisted goal on a power play to Brandon Escoto -- stakes the Sockers to a 5-1 halftime lead. A Tacoma comeback in the second half falls short, which means San Diego extends its winning streak to 11 games and remains comfortably on top of the MASL's Pacific Division.

Even if Donovan did not play his best on this night and notwithstanding his undoubted financial rewards, there is something endearing about this particular un-retirement. In most instances, a player returns because he or she missed the bright lights and buzz of playing at the highest level.

While that might have been true for some of Donovan's past comebacks, this one feels different and not just because the indoor game is several levels below where he played earlier in his career. This one feels as if it has more giving than taking and is driven by a desire to grow the game.

"There are so many little pockets of the country that love soccer and don't have the opportunity to have an MLS team, or even a USL team," Donovan said. "Now, with the rise of soccer, there are USL 2 teams, there are PDL teams, NPSL teams, teams that matter in communities. For fans, that's their pro team. It's awesome to be able to give that to this community. It's awesome -- and it's not all because of me -- to put 8,000 people in the stands to give these guys the opportunity to play in front of that. They never get that. All of that I think helps soccer get better."

When asked if he thinks he will continue playing after this year, Donovan laughs.

"Haven't you learned you don't know what the [heck] is going to happen with me?" he says. "We'll see how it goes. I'm excited about it. If I keep feeling good about it, and they want me around, we'll see. It's another cool experience."

Low car insurance adjustment from liable company's adjuster?

Someone else hit my car while it was parked. It was very cut-and-dry. I got a police report, the officer talked to the driver. It states that my car was legally parked and the other driver is at fault. The damage is minor rear bumper damage, nothing too terrible. I filed with his insurance company, and after a lot of frustrating phone tag, an insurance adjuster came out and wrote me an estimate for $450. I had an adjustment for $734 from the local body shop for my make of car, and I showed it to him. I expressed my dissatisfaction with this estimate, and he said the body shop would settle with the insurance company directly for costs in excess of the estimate. $300 is a little much. Since it's minor damage, I think the body shop will probably take the money and do a shoddy job on the car. It's my understanding they are supposed to repair my car to pre-accident conditions. We got rear ended couple of days ago, some bumper damage and chipped paint. According to the repair shop there is no internal or inside damage to it. My car caught on fire due to some electrical wiring, im fully comp, and have never claimed before. But sneaky as they are, they have told me that they do not cover electrical wiring faults, which has caused the fire. But the AA who towed my car in has catergorised it as fire damage. Surely they must cover the fire damage. I took it to a repair centre near me, and have asked them to have a quick check, and they also say its fire damage and what not, this has been procrastinated for so long by the insurance company, (claims company rather) that i can't remember what the repair centre has stated. Surely, fully comp covers something like this? THEIR engineers have said that there was no further damage to the rest of the car, but can i trust THEIR engineers? A full check up costs a lot, as they would have to take apart the car ( i believe? ) When i rang up the lady at the claims centre, she had no idea what case i was on, she literally said 'give me a moment to read up on your case' for me, thats a bit pathetic. While speaking on the phone with her not only was she rude, almost shouting at me (as i pressed on further ) . She told me she would send the company policy booklet to show that electrical wiring is not covered, and a letter stating the case was closed and in detail what the whole case is about. A week and a half has gone by (she said couple of days) This is the most annoying thing. She was rude, unhelpful, unwilling to help, and just taking the pee with the whole thing. I just find it sketchy that the letter has not been made, and no further actions or anything has happened (i have also opened another case about another incident - no info .. still) . I think they are just hoping i'd give this up as they are so unwilling to pay out. This is the reason I have insurance. Whats the point otherwise? Sorry for the long read. I have no idea what to do now, can i take it to a small claims court or talk to someone in the city council to further my case? Thanks""

I was stopped at a red light behind two cars. Both cars started to go and so did I the next thing I knew I had hit the car in front of me. The car in front of me hit the car in front of him. We all pulled over my car isnt to bad but I drive a suburban, the car in front of me was a smaller car so his looked a little worse. Nobody was hurt, and all cars were drivable, so we decided to not call the police we just all exchanged information. After we had finished and they left I immediately called my insurance lady to let her know what happened. I am not super clear on this next part, we have been going back and forth with our insurance since that call and will continue to fight it. When I called the insurance lady she said I wasnt covered. She said that they had received the last payment much later than it was due (not sure how because it was mailed the same time as always) but because of that our insurance had been cancelled. A couple of weeks ago they had chased our check, she said we were reinstated as of yesterday (the day of the accident) but because it was the same day they werent liable to pay the damages. We are going to keep fighting them because I dont think its fair. Even if they decide that they wont pay we can afford to just pay for the damages to the rear end of the car in front of us, because know matter what happened I am at fault for following to close. We cant afford to pay out of our pocket also for his front end and the rear end of the first car. Shouldnt those damages be covered by the car I hit because he was obviously following to close to the car in front of him? The police showed up and we told our stories and he admit to the police that the accident was his fault and it was on the police report. After the accident, we went our separate ways. I talked to my insurance company and they told me that since the guy that hit me admitted that he caused the accident, I had to take it up with the guy's insurance company. I called the insurance adjuster from the other insurance company and gave my statement and he told me that he viewed the accident as both our faults and would not pay me to have my car fixed. hi 5 month ago i drive my friends car, he had full insurance for his car, and i had full insurance for my car, i am new driver one and half years now, police hold me in petrol station , after question , he said i can not drive this car as does not cover me to drive, and my insurance only for my car, they sent me letter after a week to pay 300 and 6 point, i did not accept it, so i found a Solicitors, they told me they will help me i paid 700 pound they sent letter to police they not reply then i had court letter , they sent letter to court as well they not reply to my Solicitors, and my Solicitors told me do not need to go to court they sort it out, now court says 8 point, and 600 plus fee, they not been fair on me is there anyway to contact make a fine less, also my Solicitors asked me for another 300 plus vat if i want them help again like they really did, they made it worse need some advice please

hi 5 month ago i drive my friends car, he had full insurance for his car, and i had full insurance for my car, i am new driver one and half years now, police hold me in petrol station , after question , he said i can not drive this car as does not cover me to drive, and my insurance only for my car, they sent me letter after a week to pay 300 and 6 point, i did not accept it, so i found a Solicitors, they told me they will help me i paid 700 pound they sent letter to police they not reply then i had court letter , they sent letter to court as well they not reply to my Solicitors, and my Solicitors told me do not need to go to court they sort it out, now court says 8 point, and 600 plus fee, they not been fair on me is there anyway to contact make a fine less, also my Solicitors asked me for another 300 plus vat if i want them help again like they really did, they made it worse need some advice please
