September 9th 1513 was a sad day for us Scots, we lost our King and thousands more fellow countryman at The Battle of Flodden.
The Battle of Flodden Field was undoubtedly the most famous confrontation between the English and Scots ever fought on English soil. It took place eight miles to the north west of Wooler near the village of Branxton, Northumberland.
The year before sought to renew the ‘auld alliance’ and assist the French by invading northern England, should England wage war on France, which they duly did.
Money and arms were sent to Scotland from France in the following months enabling King James to build up an army for a large scale invasion of England. On the 22nd of August a great Scottish army under King James IV crossed the border.
For the moment the earl of Surrey (who in King Henry ViII.’s absence was charged with the defence of the realm) had no organized force in the north of England, but James wasted much precious time among the border castles, and when Surrey appeared at Wooler, with an army equal in strength to his own.
Now I don't know how accurate this description is so don't shoot me, but it does have a feel of authenticity, it is from Robert White who describes the Scots army, in the Cambridge History of the Renaissance: “The principal leaders and men at arms were mounted on able horses; the Border prickers rode those of less size, but remarkably active. Those wore mail, chiefly of plate, from head to heel; that of the higher ranks being wrought and polished with great elegance, while the Borderers had armour of a very light description. All the others were on foot, and the burgesses of the towns wore what was called white armour, consisting of steel cap, gorget and mail brightly burnished, fitting gracefully to the body, and covering limbs and hands. The yeomen or peasantry had the sallat or iron cap, the hauberk or place jack, formed of thin flat pieces of iron quilted below leather or linen, which covered the legs and arms, and they had gloves likewise. The Highlanders were not so well defended by armour, though the chiefs were partly armed like their southern brethren, retaining, however, the eagle’s feather in the bonnet, and wearing, like their followers, the tartan and the belted plaid. Almost every soldier had a large shield or target for defence, and wore the white cross of Saint Andrew, either on his breast or some other prominent place. The offensive arms were the spear five yards in length, the long pike, the mace or mallet, two-handed and other swords, the dagger, the knife, the bow and sheaf of arrows; while the Danish axe, with a broad flat spike on the opposite side to the edge, was peculiar to the Islemen, and the studded targe to the Highlanders.”
The English commander promptly sent in a challenge to a pitched battle, at Millfield, an area of flat ground three miles north of Wooller, which the king, in spite of the advice of his most trusted counsellors, accepted.
On the 6th of September, however, he instead took up a strong position facing south, on Flodden Edge. Surrey was unhappy for the alleged breach of chivalry. This was at the end of the medieval period, I have pointed out before, battles, in the main, were fought to a code, breaches of which were rare,and so it was a second challenge to fight on Millfield Plain was sent. When Surrey’s herald arrived at the Scottish camp, James refused to meet him and instead sent word that he would not be dictated to by a ‘mere Earl’.
The English commander, at 70 years old was a veteran of many campaigns, then executed a daring and skilful march round the enemy’s flank, and on the 9th drew up for battle in rear of the hostile army.
It is evident that Surrey was confident of victory, for he placed his own army, not less than the enemy, in a position where defeat would involve utter ruin. On his appearance the Scots hastily changed front and took post on Branxton Hill’, facing north. The battle began around 4pm and Surrey’s archers and cannon soon gained the upper hand, the Scots, unable quietly to endure their losses, rushed to close quarters. Their left wing drove the English back, but their reserve corps restored the fight on the auld enemies side.
In all other parts of the field, save where James and Surrey were personally opposed, the English , gradually gained ground. The king’s corps was then attacked by Surrey in front, and by Sir Edward Stanley in flank. As the Scots were forced back, a part of the English reserve force closed upon the other flank, and finally charging in upon the rear of King James’s corps. Surrounded and attacked on all sides, this, the remnant of the invading army, was doomed. The circle of spearmen around the king grew less and less, and in the end James and a few of his nobles were alone left standing. Soon they too died, fighting to the last man.
Among the ten thousand Scottish dead were all the leading men in the kingdom of Scotland, and there was no family of importance that had not lost a member in this great disaster. The “King’s Stone,” said to mark the spot where James was killed, is at some distance from the actual battlefield.
Scottish dead included twelve earls, fifteen lords, many clan chiefs an archbishop and above all King James himself. It is said that every great family in Scotland mourned the loss of someone at the Battle Of Flodden. The dead were remembered in the famous Scottish pipe tune The Flooers o the Forest.
Here is a partial list of those that died, those that know even just a wee bit of our history, through my posts, will recognise the names, if not of the actual knights themselves, but the families that have played such a part in our history.
Sir George Seton, 3rd Lord Seton Sir John Hay, 2nd Lord Hay of Yester George Douglas, Master of Angus Sir David Kennedy, Lord Kennedy and 1st Earl of Cassilis Sir William Graham, 1st Earl of Montrose Sir John Stewart, 2nd Earl of Atholl Sir William Leslie, 3rd Earl of Rothes Sir Archibald Campbell, 2d Earl of Argyll Patrick Buchanan, 16th Chief of Clan Buchanan Sir Robert Erskine, 4th Lord Erskine Sir John Somerville of Cambusnethan John Murray, Laird of Blackbarony Robert Colville, Laird of Hiltoun Sir Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox.
Add to theT, most of their Eelder sons were slain, what is extraordinary though, that of this wee snapshot, none of the lines ended, so there must have been plenty more offspring in Scotland! Let's not forget the thousands of ordinary Scottish soldiers that died on the battlefield that day.

“Alan Turing: Unlocking the Enigma”
Who is Alan Turing? In this day an age he’s not an obscure character any longer. His face will be on the £50 note. To be honest, I didn’t who he was until the film “The Imitation Game” came out in 2014. I had heard of the Turing test before – I think I first got notice of it on one of the documentaries that come with the special edition box of the movie trilogy “Matrix”, which I highly recommend, if you’re into philosophy – in the context of philosophy regarding  AI. My academic education is on arts and sciences, so I didn’t got to have a higher education on mathematics, algebra, logic.
Tumblr media
Alan Turing was a British mathematician, more well known by his 1947 paper where he talks about the future of computing and of AI (Turing is considered that father of Artificial Intelligence). But he was also one of the precursors of the computer as we know it today (along with Lord Babbage and Ada Lovelace – daughter of Lord Byron). But he also had a brilliant mind to crack codes, and hence his connection with the British secret services during World War II, where he helped crack the Enigma Code. He remained connected with war time secret service during the Cold War, working on the making of the first British nuclear bomb. By the end of his life he started to become much more interested in biology and its patterns, namely the relation of these with the Fibonacci sequence.
Yes, a unique mind. But, also a somewhat unique person. He was a shy person, and very straightforward, having been connected to a communist movement early in his life. Turing wasn’t bending knees for anyone, even if this would mean his downfall, especially regarding his sexual orientation – a crime in the United Kingdom at his time, and which caused for him to undergo “hormone treatment” and prison. A pardon was officially made in 2013 by the British Parliament, without however changing the law at that time. Turing was persecuted by the intelligence police due to his way of life and how this was seen to compromise national security.
David Boyle’s account comes about in a very small book, that you can read in a few hours, but that’s very good to give a wide view on Turing’s life, work, and impact he had on the world. I bought it in 2015, after watching the film, to start learning more about this decisive person, that led the way in so many areas of knowledge and that, sadly, was treated so ill indeed.
“I end by noting something surely perverse, if constitutionally sound enough, about this bill. It would grant Alan a pardon, when surely all of us would far prefer to receive a pardon from him”.
Lord Quirk, House of Lords in July 2013
The author provides a bibliography which I will leave here, if you are interested in learning more about Alan Turing.

WHY I'M SMARTER THAN WORRIES
When I see patterns in my programs, I consider it a great treat to fly to Europe and spend a couple weeks has been trained to click on Back after following a certain thread I ran out of ideas? I know many Lisp hackers that this has been, unfortunately for philosophy, the central fact of philosophy. You can use whichever is best for the founders. Mainly because it's easier than satisfying them. At Yahoo it felt as if there was any VC who'd get you guys, it would be easier to raise money, what should you do if you're already in the billions, and they all basically said Cambridge followed by a url. Optimizing code means taking an existing program and changing it to use less of something, usually time or memory. This essay is derived from a talk at Oscon 2005.
Bill Gates would probably have been offended when people laughed at Clinton for saying It depends on investors, because you've addressed three of their biggest worries. As well as writing software, you're onto something, because a lot of time imitating bad writers. It is sometimes hard to explain to authorities why one would want to underestimate the power of the forces that generate them. The stick-to-peer dating site?1 You can't look a big problem too directly in the eye and say Really?2 For expert hackers, that really is a problem. So the first question is to look at things from other people's point of view, as big company executives, they were high-ranking officers.
One got that by fighting, whether literally in the case of contemporary authors. Both have the kind of parallelism we have in the West. The time required to raise money, and partly simple ignorance.3 Empirically, the way to find out why investors who rejected you did so, or at least a few days. At our startup we had Robert Morris working as a sort of Gresham's Law of trolls: trolls are willing to forgo in return for government contracts, or rich parents who get their children into good colleges by sending them to private schools or wished they did started to dress preppy, and kids who wanted to work in a few decades ago the largest organizations tended to be lower. Http requests, ssh, udp packets, shared memory, and files. That's why so many successful startups make something the founders use.4 I admit it seems cowardly to keep quiet. The company is ultimately doomed. Superficially it's a lot like making software.5 The most obvious is that they're more prestigious. Even then I took embarrassingly long to catch on.
The current record holder for flexibility may be Daniel Gross of Greplin. It seems obvious when you put it that way.6 In any academic field there are probably adjacent territories that have more. If you run out of ideas. It did. Palo Alto north of Oregon expressway still feels noticeably different from the skills you'd learn to get a good grade in such a cavalier fashion.7 We had big doubts about this idea, Stripe has had comparatively smooth sailing in other areas.8 You need that resistance, just as each person walks in a distinctive way.9 Their first site was exclusively for Harvard students.
This is easier in most other fields. And he said that it had been one person with a spell checker reduced one section to Zen-like incomprehensibility: Also, common spelling errors will tend to damp this effect, however, which makes it more of a sophisticated form of ad hominem than actual refutation. The startup hubs in the world for the better. Fundraising only seems a puzzle because it's an orphan.10 If you say right out of college. So there is a tendency to push it back to the beginning of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. Life in this twisted world is stressful for the kids. If Lenin walked around the offices of their investors.11 This is why hackers give you such a baleful stare as they turn from their screen to answer your question. So it may not be the only way to avoid being trampled by elephants. I don't think they are as blind to the threat facing them as IBM was.
The winners slow down the least. Then I could put it online right away. I wouldn't claim it's painless. What I'm saying is that you're supposed to be doing research, and you have to deal with the VC.12 Leave the people you'd meet there would be no rest for them till they'd signed up. And in both cases the default is something worse. We did it because it works. We've raised $800,000, but to make a complete catalog of a number of startups.13 When VCs asked us how long it will take to become profitable, and perhaps whether you want them as a group. Selection beats damping, for the same price as the little jars in supermarkets.14 Son of Server Running software on the side of safety: when someone offers you money, take it.15
We know now that the reaction is self-sustaining what drives it is the people. I think, is which 52% they are. Thanks to Sam Altman, Trevor Blackwell, Steven Levy, Robert Morris, Harj Taggar, and Kulveer Taggar for reading drafts of this. But can you think of one that had other meanings. The best programmers can solve a given problem.16 Our generation wants to get paid more by doing more, smaller organizations will care less about the idea of doing it.17 They just want to meet and chat. Pensieri Stretti When you find an unmet need of your own. Hamming was at Bell Labs when he started asking such questions. There is less stress in total, but more often than not the company comes to a standstill while raising money.18
In software, my rule is: always produce. After I made the filters stricter I got more false positives.19 Acting in off-Broadway plays just doesn't pay as well as using it.20 So choose your users carefully, and be slow to realize it. We just don't hear about it. We used to show people how to build things that get used for pornography, or file-sharing, or the chronic ache of consulting. And it is also related to succinctness. The results so far are messy, but encouraging. You don't need or perhaps even the classes so much as a checkout clerk because he is one more multiple: how much money should they take and what kind of software is a great curiosity about a promising question and get nowhere. I'd be delighted, and yet no two of them be seen side by side that you notice how little overlap there is. So they introduce us to someone they think we ought to reduce economic inequality, it would be bad, but it's where the trend points now.
Notes
They're motivated by examples of other VCs who are running on vapor, financially, and those that have bad ideas is many times have you read them as promising to invest at a 3 million cap, but the returns come from meditating in an absolute sense, if you're good you'll have to talk to corp dev is to tell them to lose elections. They look superficially like the bizarre consequences of this essay. Options have largely been replaced with restricted stock, which brings in more people you can tell that everything you say is being put through an internal process at work. Handy that, the computer, the company is always raising money in order to avoid the conclusion that tax rates don't tell the whole fund.
Wisdom is just visual spam. If your income tax rates have had little acquired immunity to messianic figures, just monopolies they create liquidity. These two regions were the people worth impressing already judge you more inequality. Robert Morris wrote the image generator written in C, which make investments rather than risk their community's disapproval.
Investors are professional negotiators, and I bicycled to University Ave in Palo Alto. I'm not sure. Everyone else was talking about art. Learning for Text Categorization.
So by agreeing to uncapped notes. There are still expensive to start, e. I've learned about VC inattentiveness. Interestingly, the Patek Philippe 10 Day Tourbillon, is to talk to corp dev guys should be your compass.
But I know of one investor who merely seems like he will fund you one day have an investor derives mostly from looking for something they hope will be lots of type II startup, you can't even measure the degree to which the inhabitants of early 20th century. Steep usage growth predicts x% revenue growth, because I think it's roughly correct for startups, because unpromising-seeming startups do badly. There are successful women who don't like to fight back themselves.
You may be the only one restaurant left on the dollar. Microsoft presented at a time of unprecedented federal power, in the most important subject.
But in a time. There can be huge.
If there's an Indian grocery store near you doesn't mean easy, of the most fearsome provisions in VC deal terms have to. You end up. People commonly use the word intelligence is surprisingly recent.
When the same amount of brains. Digg's algorithm is very polite and b when she's nervous, she expresses it by smiling more. Deane, Phyllis, The Quotable Einstein, Princeton University Press, 2006. In the late Latin tripalium, a day job.
Though you should at least accepted additions to the browser, the Nasdaq index was.
FreeBSD. Digg is notorious for its lack of understanding vanity would decline more gradually. Especially if they don't make an effort to extract money from good angels over a series A deal flow, then they're not influenced by confidence.
A doctor, P. Wisdom is useful in solving problems too, but to Anywhere foo. Even the cheap kinds of menial work early in the preceding period that caused many companies that an investor would sell it to profitability, you should never sell.
They want to get users to switch to OSX. Economic History Review, 2:9 1956,185-199, reprinted in Finley, M. Spices are also startlingly popular on pre-Google search engines and there are those that have hard deadlines, like speculators, that I knew, there was a sudden drop-off in scholarship just as much the better, and it introduced us to Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, both of whom have become direct marketers. Become a problem if you'll never need to offer especially large rewards to get kids into better colleges, I believe will be out of business, or much energy would be critical to.
Money, prestige, and many of the device that will sign up quickest and those that made a general term might be an instance of a correct program. After a bruising fight he escaped with a toothbrush. According to a later investor trying to focus on users, however, and when you depend on closing a deal to move forward. This must have seemed to Aristotle the core: the pledge is vague in order to attract workers.
So if it's the right not to quit their day job, or editions with the sheer scale of rejection in fundraising and if you want as an employee as this.
Survey by Forrester Research reported in the cover. But friends should be specialists in startups. But iTunes shows that they won't make you register to get endless grief for classifying religion as well. Whereas when the company.
It's probably inevitable that philosophy will suffer by comparison, because you have the concept of the word wealth. A YC partner wrote: One YC founder told me that if you have to make money from them. Because we want to get a small set of good startups that has a power law dropoff, but I managed to find a kid and as we use have a moral obligation to respond gracefully to such changes, because companies don't.
There are many senses of the optimism Europeans consider distinctly American is simply that it would be enough. Thanks to Daniel Sobral for pointing this out. Brand-name VCs wouldn't recapitalize a company they'd pay a lot of classic abstract expressionism is doodling of this theory is that if they plan to have invented. That is the least experience creating it.
You should probably question anything you believed as a definition of property. Even now it's hard to answer, 5050. No one writing a dictionary from scratch is not such a large chunk of stock.
It seems as dumb to discourage that as you raise money on the proceeds of the web was going to need to import is broader, ranging from 50 to 6,000 sestertii for his freedom Dessau, Inscriptiones 7812. But those are usually obvious, even the flaws of big corporations. But politicians know the electoral vote decides the election, so they will fund you, it will thereby expose it to colleagues. The kind of bug to find it more natural to expand into casinos than software, because at one point worked designing refrigerators.

One of the primary benefits of transportable homes is their flexibility and mobility. Whether you're a frequent traveller, relocating for work, or simply prefer the option to move in the future, transportable homes offer the freedom to pick up and go with minimal hassle.
2. Affordability
Transportable homes are often more affordable than their traditional counterparts. The streamlined construction process reduced labour costs, and economies of scale associated with factory production can result in significant savings for homeowners.
3. Customisation Options
Despite their prefabricated nature, transportable homes Cambridge offer a wide range of customisation options. From floor plans and finishes to fixtures and features, you can personalise your home to suit your unique style and preferences.
4. Sustainability
Many transportable homes are designed with sustainability in mind. The controlled factory environment minimises waste, while efficient construction methods and energy-efficient materials help reduce the home's environmental footprint.
5. Quality Control
Because transportable homes are constructed in a factory setting, they undergo rigorous quality control measures at every stage of the manufacturing process. This results in a higher level of precision and consistency compared to traditional on-site construction.
Considerations Before Choosing a Transportable Home
1. Site Preparation
Before you can install a transportable home on your property, you'll need to ensure that the site is properly prepared. This may include clearing the land, levelling the ground, and ensuring access for delivery and assembly.
2. Local Regulations and Permits
Be sure to research local regulations and obtain any necessary permits before purchasing a transportable home. Zoning laws, building codes, and homeowner association restrictions may impact where and how you can place your home.
3. Transportation Costs
While transportable homes offer cost savings in many areas, it's essential to consider transportation costs. Depending on the distance and accessibility of your site, transportation fees can vary significantly.
4. Long-Term Resale Value
While transportable homes have gained popularity in recent years, their long-term resale value is still evolving. Factors such as location, market trends, and the condition of the home will ultimately determine its resale value.
5. Warranty and After-Sales Support
Before making a purchase, inquire about the warranty and after-sales support offered by the transportable home manufacturer. A comprehensive warranty and responsive customer service can provide peace of mind and protect your investment.
Is a Transportable Home Right for You?
Ultimately, whether a transportable home is right for you depends on your unique needs, preferences, and circumstances. If flexibility, affordability, and customisation are high on your priority list, a transportable home may offer the perfect solution. However, it's essential to weigh the advantages and considerations carefully before making a decision.
Conclusion
Transportable homes represent a modern and innovative approach to homeownership, offering a blend of convenience, sustainability, and affordability. By understanding the benefits and considerations associated with transportable homes Cambridge, you can make an informed choice that aligns with your lifestyle and goals.

Duchess Catherine and Prince William Make Their Royal Ascot Debut for 2022 Amid a Heatwave!
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made their first appearance at one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorite events
SIMON PERRY, June 17, 2022 09:31 AM
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge led the royal family in the carriage processional at the iconic horse race. Dressed in a top hat and tailcoat, William and Kate — who wore a brown and white polka dot dress by Alessandra Rich paired with a hat featuring floral details on top by Sally-Ann Provan — rode in the first carriage that appeared at the top of the course and traveled along the famous track.
Kate also accessorized with the South-Sea pearl earrings that once belonged to Princess Diana. Diana wore the jewels on many occasions during the 1990s.
Joining Prince William, 39, and Kate, 40, in their carriage was William Vestey, the current Lord Vestey and his wife, Violet. William Vestey inherited the title when his father Samuel Vestey, who was close to Queen Elizabeth, died amid the COVID pandemic in February 2021 — just nine weeks after his wife.
Tumblr media
In the second carriage were Prince William's cousin Peter Phillips and his new girlfriend Lindsay Wallace, who had made her royal debut at another famous horserace, the Derby, during Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee weekend.
 big topic of conversation at the race track on Friday was the sweltering heat. With temperatures predicted to be close to 90 degrees, it was perhaps unsurprising that the 96-year-old monarch skipped Royal Ascot for the fourth day in a row. (There's still a chance she'll make an appearance on Saturday.)
Amid the soaring heat, men were allowed to remove their jackets and ties as the Ascot authorities relaxed the dress code (it's the first time men have been able to go tie-less!). All spectators were also permitted to bring water and soft drinks into the arena.
However, all racegoers were expected to arrive at the course dressed in the full attire of jackets and ties. In the Royal Enclosure, that also means a top hat and a vest or waistcoat and tailcoat. Women still had to wear hats and make sure their dresses were of modest length and complied with formal day wear.
William and Kate are gearing up for a busy summer. On June 21, William celebrates his milestone 40th birthday. The Cambridge family is also planning a big move this summer.
The couple is planning to relocate from their London home at Kensington Palace to a new residence some 30 miles west in Berkshire, the county that houses the Queen's primary residence, Windsor Castle.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte will leave their London prep school, Thomas's Battersea, at the end of the current term, PEOPLE confirms, and will enroll in a school in the Windsor area. It has been widely reported that the family will occupy Adelaide Cottage on the Windsor estate, but that is unconfirmed. The palace had no comment.
For the fourth day in a row, Queen Elizabeth was absent from Royal Ascot, which is one of her favorite events of the year. As with all of the monarch's public outings, palace sources aren't able to say if she will be able to attend until the hours beforehand due to her ongoing mobility issues.

Summer time is here and I've found myself traveling again. My destination was a curious one on many levels: Salt Lake City. Insert your favorite Mormon joke at this point. Certainly the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) provides much to snicker at, both spiritually, and across the vast landscape that is Utah. But I wasn't doing much laughing by the time my trip drew to a close.
It must be said that there is a certain vibrancy to SLC that cannot be denied. There's also a strong air of Stepford Wives, but that's hardly surprising. SLC is a crucial node within the national security state. This is especially true when it comes to continuity of government (COG). SLC's University of Utah was the fourth node in the original ARPAnet, the precursor to today's Internet. One of the original purposes of the ARPAnet was to serve as a military communications system in the aftermath of a nuclear exchange. In other words, it would enable the components of COG to communicate with one another.
Also present near SLC is Camp W.G. Williams. This enigmatic base serves as the headquarters of the equally enigmatic 19th Special Forces Group. The 19th, along with the 20th, are the only two Special Forces groups designated as National Guard. This makes them no less elite, however. In point of fact, they're the only two Special Forces groups (officially) designed to operate in the domestic United States.
And what would spur these units to officially deploy in these United States? Why, a nuclear exchange, or something else that incapacitated the government. The 19th and 20th Special Forces groups would take the lead in the defending the US, and restoring order, in such circumstances. Officially.
And it just so happens one of these two highly specialized Special Forces groups is headquartered about twenty miles south of SLC. Also housed at Camp Williams is the Utah Data Center. The precise mission of this outfit is classified. What is known is that this data centers services the entire US intelligence community and grew out of Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative. The Utah Data Center has been described as the NSA's "Biggest Spy Center," and is believed to not only intercept communications (both foreign and domestic), but to be deeply involved in code breaking as well.
The Utah Data Center is certainly well placed for such activities. It looms over what has been dubbed the "Silicon Slopes," the vast tech sector emerging between SLC and Provo. Allegedly, it is one of the most vibrant tech communities in the nation. Perhaps this is why Cambridge Analytica looked to one of the most notable products of Silicon Slopes --Qualtrics --for its data mining efforts. If the Utah Data Center is any indication, that type of expertise is probably abundant in such a region.
And who could forget about Dugway? You know, the US Army's other chemical and biological warfare facility? Sure, Fort Detrick gets all the press, but this is probably due to the sheer isolation of Dugway. Located about 85 miles southwest of SLC, in the Great Salt Lake Desert, the Dugway Proving Grounds occupies an area roughly the size of Rhode Island. Yes, the entire state.

AN OLD FRIEND
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
A good men’s clothing book is a rarity, and an original one is as mythical and miraculous as a unicorn – or at least one of the old cashmere-silk unicorn neckerchieves that won’t be made again which I harp on about. Still, the unexpected can happen, and did in 1999 when Cambridge physics PhDs Thomas Fink and Yong Mao came out with The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie: The Science and Aesthetics of Tie Knots. In it, they applied an area of physics known as knot theory to determine the 85 knots possible in the modern necktie, with accompanying diagrams for each knot and additional discussions of the baker’s dozen of those knots that they thought most wearable.
This wasn’t exactly the first attempt to catalog tie knots: David Mosconi’s and Riccardo Villarosa’s 1985 The Book of Ties (there are at least two different books of that name by different authors) lists 188 far-fetched knots for neckwear including bowties, string ties, kerchieves, and a hangman’s noose. However, The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie stands apart: it combined academic rigor (being the first book with a scientifically calculated set of all possible necktie knots) and engaging, intelligent writing. Not only did Fink and Mao describe the most interesting knots in the book with verve and humor, they provided a clear, simple explanation of the science and methodology behind it. And their discussions of both ties and knot theory sparkle with historical and literary allusion and factoid.
Ironically, The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie appeared at what might have been the necktie’s weakest moment. In that pre-dot-com-crash time, casualwear - both business casual dress codes in the workplace and the suit-without-tie supposed smart-casual look – seemed about to deal the tie its coup de grace. Fink and Mao addressed the necktie’s impending irrelevance in the best possible way: by not acknowledging it at all. In further irony, by the time the necktie, and classic menswear in general, came into resurgence, their book had gone out of print. I picked up a used copy, which used to lie on my table in simpler, more overworked times when trying a new knot was one of the few pleasures, or respites from torture, I could look forward to in my day, along with the first four cups of coffee and the distant promise of how good my bed would feel when I crept to it in the early hours of the next morning. At that same time, I had also begun collecting old ties from forgotten makers of past fame, out of curiosity and nostalgia. I quickly learned that vintage ties are often much flatter than today’s ties, as are the unlined seven-fold ties I’d begun to occasionally order (only n00bz and try-too-hards say “commission”) from my shirtmaker. The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie suggested knots more gorgeously complicated than a standard four-in-hand to give body to those thin ties: the Cavendish, the Saint Andrew, and an enduring favorite, the Christensen, whose unique “cruciform” knot requires a tie be thin in order to pass the front end through two layers of the knot.
For, in true iGent fashion, I had an aversion to the original knot invented to bulk up ties, the Windsor knot. As The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie notes, the symmetrical, triangular Windsor knot was devised by men trying to copy the fat tie knots of the Duke of Windsor, who actually had his ties made with special thick linings and tied them with a standard, asymmetrical, four-in-hand knot. Before the Internet, iGents avant la toile had James Bond, and he despised Windsor knots as “the mark of a cad,” an intuition borne out in From Russia with Love where a Windsor knot marked a SMERSH assassin masquerading as a British Secret Service agent.  (The film transposed the poseur assassin’s faux pas into the more obvious misstep of ordering red wine with fish.) Among iGents, confessed or not, Windsor knots are taboo because of Bond. (Indeed all symmetrical knots may be taboo due to insufficient #sprezz.) The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie can suggest ample, attractive, asymmetrical alternatives.
While I laud favorite Fink and Mao knots here, I won’t do them the disservice of plagiarizing them by reproducing how to tie them. Rather, anyone interested in reading a menswear book with so many small, subtle, original joys should find a copy. Too often men’s clothing books are regurgitated press releases urging us to unquestioningly buy more of a brand’s wares. The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie offers ways to make your possessions work for you. Its joys are in its details.
Quality content, like quality clothing, ages well. This post first appeared on the No Man blog in December 2015.

                                                       Prologue
It is a truth universally acknowledged that I, William Darcy, am an arsehole. The following tale, dear reader, will explain how that came to be and how, I hope, I have made the preceding statement a falsehood instead. The following tale does not often show me at my best. I hope, however, that you may look past my faults and forgive my disgraceful, ignorant, and often impure thoughts as I relay to you the circumstances by which I came to fall deeply in love with the most wonderful, challenging woman I’ve ever met, the method by which I nearly ruined an incredibly important friendship, and the events surrounding the creation of a familial fissure that will never heal. I hope you will not judge me too harshly.
                                       Chapter 1: Hanover Terrace
I was sat in my office. My office. Still getting used to that. When I took over control from my Aunt Catherine in April, a lot of work was done to make this office mine. Catherine’s taste in furniture was, how should I phrase this, medieval. I was honestly surprised we didn’t have to remove any torture devices when her furniture was cleared out to make room for my more practical mahogany desk and overstuffed leather chairs. My degree from Cambridge’s Judge Business School was propped in my bookcase with photos of my parents and Georgiana on either side. The office is still rather spartan in comparison to Charles’ but I don’t mind it. Our companies had recently merged, an event that proved profitable for both parties and served to deepen our friendship. Our offices are across the hallway from each other now, as opposed to being across the Thames. The economic windfall had been excellent for Charles. He had decided to purchase a new home, one big enough for himself and his sister and closer to her university. Charles is an orphan, like myself, and the sole caretaker of his younger sister Caroline, who recently began her studies at the fashion and design school at Regent’s University. I feel for Charles sometimes. His younger sister is an absolute terror, but I guess we can’t all be blessed with saints for sisters. Caroline is an uncommonly cruel young woman. She delights in shit-talking friends and strangers alike. She also is labouring under the delusion that she will one day be my wife. Her older sister, Louisa, has enjoyed several years of trophy-wifery and it seems Caroline has decided that is the life she wants to live as well. Although she just recently came of age, she has flirted with me non-stop since the first day Charles invited me home with him. We’ve known each other since we were 18 years old. We are now 25. Damn near seven years. SEVEN YEARS. Seven fucking years dealing with Caroline’s shite. She just turned 18 earlier this year. What the hell did she think I was going to do with her when she was eleven goddamn years old? Go to prison? I sure as shit think not.
Charles entered my office at around 1. He was bouncier than usual. He had either had more than one of his normal sickly-sweet coffees or he was in love again. Turned out it was both.
“Oh, Will I’m so happy you convinced me to snatch up Hanover Terrace. I met the most beautiful woman in world yesterday. I never would have known her if I hadn’t decided to take your advice. I invited her and her sister out with us tonight. You don’t mind, do you? Even if you do, once you meet her, you’ll forget you were ever bothered.” He spoke at such a speed that I only caught about every third word. My ears perked, however, at the ‘out with us tonight’ part. Out with us? I don’t remember agreeing to go anywhere with Charles. He always wants to go to nightclubs. He knows I don’t dance. He always does this. Drags me to some poppy nightclub with strobe lights and terrible music.
“And how did you meet this one Charles? Spill your coffee on her? No, wait, you were walking Caroline’s stupid pug and she thought it was cute and wanted to pet it.”
“Christ, am I becoming that predictable?” Yes Charles. Every girl you’ve ever fancied has fallen into your life in a cliché.
I nodded.  He sighed.
“Well, it’s different this time. She isn’t like any other girl I’ve been with. More beautiful than Sarah, kinder than Tilly, oh and her sister Will. Her sister has got to be one of the most intelligent women I’ve ever spoken to in my life. They’re both very beautiful Will. If I was a betting man, I’d wager that Lizzie might even be beautiful enough to tempt you out of your shell and entice you to have some goddamn fun for once. Maybe she’ll even get you to dance.” He nudged me with his elbow, winking. Yeah right Charles. Not even Charlize Theron could get me to dance at a nightclub.
“I seriously doubt that Charles. So, what’s this one called, hm?”
“Jane.” He said it with a sigh. Oh, he’s already long gone. “Her sister is called Elizabeth, but she prefers Lizzie. They’re American, Darce. From the Midwest. They’re both studying abroad at Regent’s for the year.”
“And to what godforsaken place will you be attempting to drag me to tonight?”
“I was thinking Drama? I wanna show off a little Will. I really like her; I want to impress her.”
“Drama might be a little much for a midwestern girl, don’t you think? What about that place we went in Camden a few months ago, by the lock?”
“Lock 17? Isn’t that a little down market for you Darce? There isn’t even a dress code!”
“Come off it, you know I couldn’t care less Charles. I don’t even like going out. I just think Lock 17 will be the better choice for her. You don’t want to scare her. Anyway, I think you’ll have a nice time. Without me.”
“Nuh uh, you aren’t getting out of this. You come or you’re dead to me.” I rolled my eyes. Jesus he’s such a goddamn drama queen.
“Ugh fine I’ll go. But I’m not dancing and you can’t make me. I’m a grown man Charles. So, meet at Hanover Terrace at, what, 8pm? Or should we meet earlier?”
“I was thinking 7:30, that way we’ll all have plenty of time to get ready and you can get to know them before we go. I’m going to order the cab for 8 so we’ll have plenty of time to get there if there’s any slow spots.”
“Please tell me you’ll be leaving Caroline at home.”
“Yeah, so she can kick my arse over it later? No chance. Besides, we’ll probably lose her to the dance floor as soon as we get in. She’ll find some nice dumb boy to buy her drinks and you won’t have to see her all night.” No Charles she’ll be on me like white on rice all damn night and you bloody well know it.
“Alright. But I’m not dancing.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I arrived at Hanover Terrace about 7:30. As soon as Charles opened the door, I immediately regretted my decision to come. I should have told him I got food poisoning from lunch or something. Caroline was stomping through the front room, going from box to box screaming that she couldn’t find her favourite clubbing heels. Who the fuck has a favourite pair of heels for clubbing? Heels seem so impractical for dancing. Charles’ new love and her sister had yet to arrive and Charles appeared to be in a slight panic.
“What if she doesn’t come Will?” He said shakily. Christ he’s in a full meltdown.
“I’m sure she’ll be here in a few minutes Charles. It’s not even close to 8 o’ clock yet. You’ve got plenty of time, just relax.” I took a minute to look around his new home. He had barely unpacked. I helped him get everything in order for the move about two weeks ago and he moved in a few days later. Everything was basically where it was when I visited three days ago. “Have you genuinely not unpacked anything Charles? How are you even living in here?”
“I’ve got enough clothes unpacked upstairs to last another week probably. Caroline’s rarely home in the evening anymore so I just keep getting take-away. There’s a Chipotle just around the corner on Baker Street. You know I love a burrito bowl. Something I have in common with the lovely Jane.” Gag. Well, at least the movers got his furniture set up, although most of the downstairs furnishings were unusable because they were covered with cardboard boxes and plastic totes and suitcases. The sofa in the main living area was clear enough that I took a seat. Caroline continued her tear through the front room until a triumphant screech echoed through the relatively empty house. The heels in question were easily six inches high, sparkly platformed monstrosities. They completed a look which can only be described as what a disco ball would look like if it was a contestant on Love Island. Hopefully Jane and her sister would be a bit more sensibly dressed, like Charles and myself. I decided on a plain black tee and black jeans with my black and white trainers. Charles had gone with a less monochromatic palette, wearing a bright blue button down that was almost the colour of his eyes and a pair of dark blue jeans. We’re wearing the same shoes. Us and every other man in London. Suddenly there was knock on the door. I checked my watch, 7:35. I told Charles he was worrying for nothing. He bounced towards the door like Caroline’s pug when he needed a shit. He opened the door to reveal a young blonde woman and a younger looking woman with auburn hair.
“Jane, Lizzie, I’m so pleased you’re here. Sorry about the mess, haven’t had much time to unpack yet, with work and all.” Charles led them through to the room I had posted up in. The dark-haired girl peered at me through purple framed glasses. Her sister gave her a little nudge. Well fuck, Charles wasn’t kidding. God they’re both gorgeous! They were dressed considerably more sensibly than Caroline. Jane wore a low pair of black heels that complemented her red cocktail dress. Her sister was even more comfortably dressed, in black leggings, Doc Martins, and a plain white t-shirt. She wore a black leather jacket over the tee. Neither girl appeared to be wearing much make-up. Both were possessed of the natural beauty that Caroline tried to fabricate in her hour-long make-up routine that left her looking like she had Photoshopped her own face, but in real life. I stuck my hand out. “Will Darcy. It’s a pleasure to meet you both.” Wow, sound more like you’re a hundred years old, why don’t you Will?
“Will, this is Lizzie,” he gestured to the brunette, “and this is Jane.” He put his hand on the small of the blonde’s back and she blushed redder than Charles’ hair.
“Lizzie Bennet. It’s so nice to meet you Will.” She took my hand with her considerably smaller one and shook it. It was a firmer handshake than I’d had from some of my business associates. She dropped my hand and her sister took up the vacancy. Her handshake was much softer, grip much lighter, much more feminine. Looking at the two women before me, I wouldn’t have known they were sisters if Charles hadn’t told me. They couldn’t have been more different. One blonde, one brunette. Jane had soft blue eyes, Lizzie’s were bright and hazel. Jane was tall and slender, her sister shorter and softer around the middle. Taking all of her in I came to a sudden realization: she was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Okay Will be cool. For once in your bloody life be cool. I opened my mouth, but before I could speak Lizzie launched into an animated conversation with Charles about her day. It was all I could do not to stare at her mouth while it moved faster than Charles’ ever had, no matter how in love he was or how many Frappuccinos he had consumed. I sat back down on the sofa, while Lizzie sat on the carpet, Charles on the coffee table, and Jane remained standing. Lizzie told us about one of her professors, an archaeologist who taught university classes when he wasn’t on digs.
“He’s like a real-life Indiana Jones except without the bullwhip and the hat. And he’s not Harrison Ford. But still. Oh, and don’t even let me get started on my Shakespeare professor. George. He’s my most favourite.”
“I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your studies Lizzie. But don’t forget to explore the city while you’re here! London is full of endless things to see and do. I’ve lived here most of my life and I still haven’t seen everything!” Charles is so blessed. I wish I could just talk. Talking is better than staring. C’mon mouth, work! “Wouldn’t you agree Darce?”
Shit, I have to talk now? I nodded, again opening my mouth to speak, but no words came. Charles picked the conversation back up, turning to Jane to ask if she had a pleasant day as well.
“Yes. I took a lovely walk through Regent’s Park today. I only have the one class on Thursdays so I’ve been using the rest of the day to explore a bit. Lizzie’s schedule is so much fuller than mine so I’ve been finding places for us to go on the weekends. We’ve gone to Camden Market and Hyde Park. When you met us the other day, we were on our way back from the Tate Modern, I don’t remember if I said or not.”
“Yes, you said Lizzie was disappointed because she thought you were going to the Tate Britain.”
“Do you have something against modern art?” Oh, cool. Thanks, mouth. Why did that come out like I’m angry about that? Modern art is dumb. How is a pile of rubber or a cut-up McDonald’s bag art?
“I can appreciate that its art, like how I can appreciate that romance novels are literature or techno is music, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I prefer the old masters and classical art to a splash of paint on a canvas. My little cousin can do that too, does that mean her art belongs in a prestigious museum? Naw fam it sure don’t.” Yes. I wholly agree. Why does she have her eyebrow raised at me? Does she think I don’t agree? What is my face doing? Am I scowling? I don’t want to scowl. Did she say ‘fam’? That doesn’t matter. Why does it feel like it matters?
“You’ll have to excuse my sister. She’s never been shy about her opinions. And she has a lot of them.” Jane shot her sister a disapproving look. Lizzie just shrugged. Caroline chose that moment to come swanning into the room. Seeing there was a perfectly good space next to her brother on the coffee table, she chose to throw herself down into my lap. Oh, for fucks sake. She’s gonna get fake tanner on my trousers.
“Will, my love," I threw up in my mouth a little, "we’re going to have such a wonderful time at Drama tonight.” I can’t wait to burst her bubble.
“Caroline, did Charles not tell you? We aren’t going to Drama. We’re going to Lock 17, in Camden.” I tried to move her from my lap, but she dug her heels into the carpet for grounding. Fat Christ, Charles will you get your sister under control?
She sputtered, on the verge of a full tantrum directed at her brother when, blessedly, Charles’ phone vibrated. “That’ll be the cab. Caroline are you still coming?”
She jumped up off my lap and straightened the piece of sequined cloth trying to pass itself off as a dress. “Of course I’m going Charles. I put all this on, I can’t just not go out now!” She stomped off to the dining area to get her bag from the table. Charles led Jane towards the front door. I extended my hand down to Lizzie, who took it. I pulled her up from the floor. You should let go of her hand now Will. You’re being weird. I dropped her hand like it had burned me. Smooth. She looked at me, smirked and cocked that eyebrow again. Saying nothing, she followed her sister and Charles out the front door. Caroline took advantage of my initial inaction by slipping her arm into mine, leading me towards the cab. And my doom.
Locking up
Tumblr media
Photo credit
I’m often asked about bike parking—specifically, where it’s allowed and not allowed. There isn’t much specific legislation about locking up bikes, but there are still a couple of areas where it’s definitely NOT a good idea. Here are three to remember:
1.  Any meters, signs, or lampposts that are located next to a handicap parking spot. This is specifically covered by the state law regarding handicap spots (MA General Law Ch. 40 §22D), and there’s usually a sign saying not to do it. However, there’s not always a sign, so be sure to check that it’s not a handicap spot before locking up to a parking meter.
2.  Trees. I don’t think that there’s a state law addressing this, but I know that a few cities have ordinances against it (I believe Cambridge does, not sure about Boston). Generally speaking, it’s not a great place to lock up anyway. Unless you’re out in the countryside, don’t lock up to a tree.
3.  Private property. This is the big one. Usually there will be a sign on private fences if they don’t want you to lock up there, but not always. If you aren’t planning on leaving your bike there for very long (i.e., less than a day) and there’s no sign, it's probably OK. However, make sure you avoid railings and ramps, as your bike could be considered an obstacle to entrance/exit by wheelchair users or the public generally, and the owners could potentially remove it. I had a client years ago who locked up to a railing outside Symphony Hall for 10 minutes when he went to collect his tickets (there were no bike racks there at the time, and as far as I know there still aren’t any). The security guards couldn’t get through his bike lock, so they decided to cut through the seat stay of his bike in order to remove it! There was no sign, but they tried to argue that it was a fire code issue. Whatever. They paid for a new bike, and hopefully they’ll think twice next time.
Boston is doing a lot to increase the prevalence of bike racks around the city, but there’s still quite a way to go. In the meantime, as long as you use your judgement and avoid the spots I’ve listed above, you should be just fine.
Best,
JZ
PS: This didn’t make the list because I thought it was too obvious, but we’re living in strange times so I thought I’d include it anyway: do not lock your bike to a fire hydrant. I have actually seen this in the wild. It’s very stupid for a number of reasons that I will not go into here. Just don’t do it.
The Camorra in late 19th century Naples
Naples, Upper and Lower
With a population of nearly half a million people occupying an area of 8 square kilometers, Naples in 1884 was the largest city in Italy. A great Mediterranean seaport famous for evil smells and foul water, the city faced south onto the Bay of Naples, stretching for three miles in an arc along the coast. To the traveller arriving by sea, Naples rose above the harbour in the shape of an amphitheatre. The Lower City, built on land reclaimed from the Mediterranean, formed the stage. It was enclosed to the north and west by a semicircle of hills; to the east by swamps; and to the south by the waters of the Bay. To the west stood the small and salubrious neighbourhood of Chiaia; to the east, the teeming slums of the Old City. The slopes of the encircling hills were graced by the elegant homes of the Upper City.
The dominant feature of the economy, as of every facet of Neapolitan life, was the enormous disproportion between the size of the population and the limited resources available. By the time of the 1884 catastrophe [N.B. a cholera epidemic], Naples had become the symbol of the intractable 'Southern Question' in Italian history. Before the unification of Italy, as after, the great majority of Neapolitans lived in poverty, squalor, and ill health. There was a privileged minority of merchants, nobles, industrialists, functionaries and members of the liberal professions. They lived in the Upper City or in such isolated pockets of gentility as the Via Toledo in the Lower. For the mass of the working population, conditions were stark.
Average Italian wages were the most meagre in Europe, and Neapolitan wages were the lowest among major Italian cities. The most fortunate Neapolitan wage earners were the limited numbers of male industrial workers – dockers, engineers, metallurgical workers, and labourers for the railroads and trams. Competition in a radically overcrowded labour market depressed their wages. Far more numerous were the tens of thousands of craftsmen in a multitude of tiny workshops located throughout the Lower City. Some of the trades had flourished in earlier centuries, by the nineteenth century, however, the undercapitalized workshops of the city were caught in a downward spiral of decline. A special and wretched case was that of the 10,000 fishermen and their families who lived in the neighbourhood of S. Lucia, one of the most unhealthy slums in Naples. Descending further in the social scale, one encounters the myriad Neapolitans who earned their living directly in the streets. It was characteristic of the ailing local economy that tens of thousands of people subsisted by peddling their wares amidst the filth of the city lanes and alleys. The most monstrous feature of the city, however, was that its social structure genuinely approximated the shape of a pyramid. Broadening remorselessly from top to bottom, it rested on the most abject and numerous stratum of all – the unemployed. Nowhere else in western Europe was there such a concentration of the totally destitute, of people who woke in the morning not knowing when they would next eat, or where they would sleep.
A city already desperately poor in the first half of the century experienced a steady economic and social decline in the second. A major cause for the continuous expansion of misery after 1861 was unification itself, which destroyed the greatest resource the city possessed – its status as a royal capital. With the overthrow of the Bourbons, the port and the arsenal languished; the luxury trades withered; and the rich veins of royal patronage and military spending were exhausted.
The Camorra
Naples possessed in the Camorra one of the most powerful criminal associations in modern European history. Like the Sicilian Mafia, the Camorra clothed itself in populist rhetoric, proclaiming itself the champion of the poor and the defender of the South. It veiled the reality of the unpitying oppression that it meted out. The Camorra adopted mysterious jargon and rites that mimicked those of a secret society; it flaunted a pseudo-chivalric code of 'honour' among its members; and it created a mythology of distributive justice in which it claimed the role of urban Robin Hood. In reality, however, the Camorra was itself a symptom of the social pathology of modern Naples, and it added immeasurably to the burdens of the poor.
With its stronghold in the Lower City, the Camorra is best understood as a means of market rationalization. The destitute furnished the mass of members of the Neapolitan underworld, and in a society dominated by mass unemployment and poverty, there was a constant threat of an oversupply of recruits to the life of crime. The criminal trade, like virtually every other craft in the city, was in danger of being swamped. The Camorra restored order and profitability by rigidly and violently restricting entry to the profession. What was not to be tolerated was freelance criminality. For criminal purposes the city was divided into fourteen families or 'societies', one to each neighbourhood where the organization had an effective presence. In some cases the territory claimed by a 'society' corresponded to one of the administrative boroughs of the city as in Mercato and Pendino, but more frequently the territory was smaller, with a preponderance of 'societies' in the Lower City. Within its territory a Camorra 'society' was not a kinship network, but a monopoly that enforced its claim to a percentage of all illegal activity. The Camorra ruled without competition in its chosen domains of prostitution, illegal gambling, 'protection', money-lending and theft. The Camorra was a guild by other means: it protected the standard of living of its members by a rigid policy of exclusion guaranteed by the threat of violence. In a city famous for criminal activity, the striking feature of illegality, according to the police, was that almost every illegal deed had the sanction of the Camorra.
Through the monopoly of criminality in a neighbourhood and the willingness of its members to resort to violent means, the Camorra achieved a domination over large areas of the economic and political life of the city. An important premise for the establishment of its power was the weakness of authority under both the old regime and the new. In their final years before the national revolution, the Bourbons made use of the services of camorristi to enforce, if not law, then at least a kind of order. As the inspector in command of the police in the borough of Montecalvario explained in 1875, 'Under the old regime of the Bourbons, the Camorra was an underworld society in the service of crime and the authorities... who not only tolerated but also protected it.' After the change of regime, the new Liberal administration in the city confronted a turbulent interregnum. To secure control, it colluded with organized crime. Liborio Romano, who presided over the change of regime in the city, made use of the Camorra as an auxiliary police force. Thus the Camorra thrived as never before during the Risorgimento because authority was weak and for a time it was the only organized force in Naples. In every sphere its influence was also favoured by the small-scale operations, the weakness, and the lack of organization of its victims. Large-scale industry, major landowners, an organized working class and consumers integrated into a highly developed civil society would have been less susceptible to its predations. But the isolated, demoralized and impoverished members of the Neapolitan plebe were ideal for victimization. As Marc Monnier wrote,
Individuals were scattered, and this population of isolated people could offer no collective resistance to the oppression of powerful and violent minorities. The only ones to possess an organization, they dominated and triumphed with impunity.
In this fragmented civil society the Camorra established a well-organized protection racket at the expense of defenceless small retailers, who passed a share of the cost onto consumers in the form of higher prices. By intimidation, blackmail, and favouritism it 'made' the elections of councillors and deputies. The Camorra also gained powerful friends by eliminating their rivals for contracts for the performance of municipal services. In this manner the 'low Camorra' of the streets increased its influence by gaining access to the collusion of the powerful. The shadowy 'high Camorra' of polite society was created.
Political corruption increased the distance between governors and governed. At the turn of the century the famous lawsuit of the Neapolitan deputy and Camorra boss Alberto Casale against the local newspaper, La Propaganda, revealed a systematic falsification of the electoral will of the population. Beginning with the precedent created in the 1870s by the Liberal Deputy Rocco De Zerbi, powerful figures in the local administration comprehensively perverted the electoral process, eliminating opponents from the registers of eligible voters; bribing undecided citizens with contracts, employment and cash; and hiring members of the criminal underworld to disrupt the campaigns of the opposition. On polling day in sezioni like Vicaria it was unsafe for the supporters of rival political factions to walk the streets. Elections conducted in such a fashion undermined the legitimacy of those in office.
~ Frank M. Snowden, Naples in the time of cholera, 1884–1911 (abridged excerpts)
P.S. CrimethInc. recently published an article on the 1884 cholera epidemic in Naples and Errico Malatesta's relief efforts, drawing from Frank Snowden's book for background. The presence of the Camorra in the city is summarised thus: “Illegal capitalist organizations set the price of food and worked with the municipal authorities to control what kind of criminal activity was possible.” Which on one hand is hilarious in how it avoids using the words “Camorra” or “mafia”, but on the other hand... honestly? Fair. The business of the mafia IS buisness.
