Review : The Calculation of You and Me by Serena Kaylor

âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸ 5 Stars
This book was so good, I loved it. Itâs a contemporary YA romance that takes place Senior year of high school, but it doesnât feel young at all. Marlowe, our heroine, is autistic and is told by her ex Josh that sheâs âbad at loveâ (RUDE!) which makes her question her ability to be romantic and tackles figuring it out like its a calculus equation. đ¤
Marlowe wants to win him back and enlists Ashton Hayes, or Ash, a tall, hot goth boy with piercings, eyeliner and who works in a romance book store and knows his shit. Ash agrees to be her âromance tutorâ via books and writing letters in exchange for Marlowe improving his bandâs website and social media presence (NEVER MIND THE MONSTERS are uber cool). Of course they catch feelings for each other and its delightful. Itâs also quite funny! âŁď¸
âIâm officially Team Ashâ â Ash has quickly been added to my Best Book Boyfriends list. Not only is he tall, hot, and edgy, heâs sensitive, kind, patient and thoughtful and is not afraid to show his love for romance novels or to BE romantic. *DREAM GUY* The meta aspect of a romance bookstore and romance binge reading within a romance novel is so fun. Marlowe turns both her sister and her best friend on to romance and by the end of the book they are devouring everything they can get their hands on!! đThe angst and suspense and pay off are very satisfying. I couldnât put this one down and read it in two days. One of the better YA romances Iâve read lately that leaves you with a lot to think about. Oh, and I cried at the ending. It was so sweet. I will definitely read it again. đ¤

Book Review #33 of 2024--

The Calculation of You and Me by Serena Kaylor. Rating: 4.25 stars.
Read from May 19th to May 23rd.
Before I get into the review, thank you to both NetGalley and the publishers over at Wednesday Books for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review. The Calculation of You and Me follows Marlowe Meadows whose recent breakup has really gotten to her. After being told that "some people aren't built for love", she decides that the moody singer/song writer Ashton Hayes she's been paired up with for an English project would be the perfect person to teach her about the emotions she struggles to connect with and express. If Ash will agree to help her write some love notes to her ex, she'll help his band go viral. But as a semester filled with love notes, romance novels, and late nights with a boy she can't define goes on Marlowe starts to wonder if there's actually a solution for love. The Calculation of You and Me comes out on June 18th and is available for preorder now.
This was such a fun read for me. I've read from this author before and enjoyed her book then, but reading this one gave me so many fuzzy feelings that I've been longing for in a romance. There was just something about Ashton and Marlowe that made me feel so connected to them. I felt like Marlowe was relatable despite the fact that she's on the autism spectrum and I'm not. There's one particular line when she's comparing herself to her sister and it just hit me like a punch to the gut. I love Ashton because he's a realistic teenage boy, but there's also such contrasting aspects to his personality. Ash loves to read a decent amount of Romance novels, but he's also in a rock band with his rocker buddies. The aspects that make this one of the best YA Romance novels that I've read are the things that make this story so real for me: Ash messes up when trying to understand Marlowe and her autism but he's trying, Marlowe comes to her senses about her ex on her own and not because Ash is bringing him up over and over, Ash being hurt by Marlowe's choices and shutting down about it instead of creating conflict. The sweet moments hit me in the feels so hard and I was rooting for them from like page 10 (I don't even think we meet Ash by then, but you get my point). I was never not here for it.
I wish I had gotten more from certain aspects of the story. (This isn't a new thing for me, I always want more from stories I enjoy.) I would have loved to see more of the town (especially around the holiday based stuff that was happening during the story). I would have loved to gotten to know all of the band mates and best friends more. If we had all of the things I would have loved to see more of, this would easily have been a 450 page Romance novel, and who the heck would read that? Me, but besides me. I also felt like the ending came about too quickly. We were hanging on the edge of an emotional precipice and when the resolution came it wasn't there long enough to fully recover. But that could just be the whole thing where I can't get enough of good stories.
Overall, this is such a good and fun Romance novel. I love the couple, I love the way that real life hard issues are handled, and I love the humanity and reality that come through the pages.

Did you think I was done? Ahahahaha no, I have more.
Because chapter 70 of MOMU gave me the very dynamic between them that I missed so much, I just blacked out and started drawing uncontrollably lmao
Also. ALSO. I noticed a while ago that Prowl has the habit of..likeâŚconstantly frowning. So. I did a bit of research and made this graph.
In 70 chapters, Prowl frowns rougly 104 times. And the intensity of this gesture is very clearly correlated with the development of his relationship with Jazz, as you can see ahahahahah It might be wrong tho donât take me seriously Iâm not good with graphs

#maccadam#transformers#prowl#jazz#jazzprowl#fic fanart#momu fanart#I just#mmmmm#For the whole fic Prowl had to think twice about everything Jazz says#every information could end up being wrong#sometimes even without Jazz realising it#so when Prowl says#heâs trusting Jazz. itâs.#also it totally wasnât me googling âbelieving and trusting nuance difference in englishâ#the moment I realised the difference I think my brain started rollercoaster loops#he canât believe him but he found enough faith to trust him#while. YES. For the whole story Jazz couldnât fucking be believed#list e n#Jazz did a lot of things for Prowl#fucktons of big and small gestures to show that yes he likes loves and appreciates Prowl#Iâm so happy Prowl is returning this energy#like#remember that scene a while back when Jazz kissed Prowl? Cool cool okay. Did Prowl kiss him? nope. It was one sided gestures#*gesture. That kiss didnât make me feel like itâs truly something precious because Jazz started it but Prowl didnât do quite the same#but thisđ. This feels so much more important for me. Because Prowl#who is for the whole story was mister I calculate every chance of possible betrayal. Prowl whos entire personality is to trust nobody#Prowl goes. Fuck that I trust you. You feel me?#it wouldnât be the same if he said I love you. Because love is very much something you donât have a lot of control over.#but to trust someone? Itâs a choice Prowl had to consciously make. You see what I mean? I love it. oh fuck I ran out of tags..

With the happy release of chapter 3 of Calculated Love I treat you now to society if Shockdad actually could be honest and recognize his feelings <3
He talks like a well meaning evil advisor. Being open in expressing and caring for people does not change he has been Megatron's confidant for a million years and so a majority of things he suggests are highly unethical and illegal. The Autobots have just learned to deal with it.

Okay but do you know what really gets me?
There's no one left in-universe who can or will talk about Jaybin as he really was.
Bruce is the founder of the Jaybin Slander Department;
Alfred is no better.
Dick wasn't around much, didn't know him that well.
If Barbara ever interacted with him in his original run, I haven't found it yet.
I mean, he had some interactions with the Teen Titans, but was he really close with any of them?
I suppose Gordon could, assuming he isn't in on the Jason-bashing. I haven't seen it but I could be missing something.
And, well, Jason... somehow, I don't think anyone's asking Jason what he was like as a kid, nor is he really a reliable source. Autobiographical memory is weird.
No one in-universe will ever really talk about this bright, friendly, eager kid, and it's a tragedy.
He was smart and clever and had so much compassion.
He wanted so badly to help people, and he found joy in his work as Robin.
He had a dramatic flair and he was kind of a nerd and he was really funny on occasion.
He was so deeply, fundamentally good, and the fact that somehow his legacy has been twisted into one of anger and recklessness is honestly a crime.
It makes me so desperately sad that there's not a single character who can even start to undo the lasting damage of a four-decade smear campaign against a kid who did nothing to deserve it.
#warrior's thoughts#jason todd#bruce wayne#jaybin#jaybin readthrough#comics#it's all jim starlin's fault btw#the way he writes jason does not align with any of jason's other appearances in contemporary books#every time dc writes something about jason being angry or reckless as a child an angel loses their wings#he has his moments of anger but it's not like he's not justified in those#also he's 12-15; i feel like some anger is normal at that age#and a lot of his seemingly reckless moments were actually calculated; he just didn't lay out the plan for bruce before doing it#jim starlin is the only writer who writes jason the way he does. everyone else seemed to understand that this was a good kid#it's really jarring to go from batman 413 to batman 415 (jay doesn't appear in 414) because of the stark difference in how jay is written#genuine question for mr starlin if you didn't like the character of robin why did you agree to write batman?#i can't be too upset; i really like red hood and it's only because jim starlin hated jason that we got utrh in the first place#but the character assassination of jaybin is just depressing#(btw if you want me to figure out image sources lmk i did not keep track lol)#also i should note that it is implied that dick and jason were actually pretty close#we just don't get to see much of it#so all we have are those implications. same with babs actually - she never appears in the jaybin era#but later comics (and her presence at his funeral) suggest they knew each other

Just thinking about s4 but when Alpha!Eddie grabs Steve to shove the bottle against his neck, he doesn't realize Steve is an omega and accidentally scruffs him. And Steve is just boneless, kinda goes down. And Eddie isn't expecting deadweight and almost falls ontop of Steve but realizes what's happening (let's just say he's fought off a few bullies who scruffed members of his pack). He immediately drops the bottle and holds onto Steve, who tries to scent Eddie. Just shoves his face into Eddie's neck and nuzzles it, lets out a purr unintentionally.
#Obviously from then on it would be different because Eddie's inner alpha would be like I GOTTA PROTECT THIS SELFSACRIFICING IDIOT#And Steve is just like wow Eddie can manhandle him?? He's so strong!! Eddie stole a van??? May 2024 TBR--

Connor Cow and I are excited to talk about the books we're planning on reading in May. (AKA look at my cute stuffed cow because my physical TBR is TINY.) I have three Kindle books and three NetGalley ARCs I plan on reading during the month so the physical TBR for the month is small. I'm so excited for my reading plans for the month. I've already started one of the Kindle books and I am INVESTED.
Teen Titans: Beast Boy Loves Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo-- I'm continuing my reread of the Teen Titans graphic novel series. Up next we see Beast Boy and Raven meet and we see them starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together. This isn't my favorite of the series (that one's next month), but I still enjoy the Teen Titans graphic novels so much.
Aesop's Fables by Aesop-- I found this beautiful collection of Aesop's Fables when visiting a small bookstore in San Antonio a few months ago and I decided this would probably be a good choice for May since I am back to school and I need some light reads to help me push through the month. There are more than 200 short fables (less than one page per) that use animals to discuss human problems. Some are as short as two sentences. Some are as long as five or six sentences. I'm hoping to finish this one early on in the month.
Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang (Kindle)-- Okay. So this is the one I'm already SUPER invested in. I started it at the end of April and I'm 100 pages in. All of the people who said this book made them angry were so right. This was sold to me as a standalone dark academia novel featuring a woman trying to survive the magic school as the first woman admitted to the High Magistry. She has the janitor forced upon her as her assistant as a cruel joke by others in the High Magistry. And we follow them as they try to make it in this magical school. The absolute rage I've felt in the first 100 pages is astounding. I can't wait to dive deeper into it.
Faking It with Number 41 by Piper Rayne (Kindle)-- This is the next book I'm picking up in the Hockey Hotties series. In this one we follow Ford who is the heir to Jacobs Enterprises, but with a career in the NHL, he doesn't want to fall into the family business. His father agrees...with one condition. He fakes a relationship with the family's PR rep. But do things stay pretend? Or does Ford find himself in an even bigger pickle than he was in before? I liked Ford in the other book I read in this series so I'm excited to read his story.
Pacific Rim by Alexander C. Irvine (Kindle)-- Did I really buy a novelization of a movie I watched last month? Am I really about to read it...despite having watched the movie two times now? Yes and Yes. Hey. Hi. Hello. Have you met me? The Resident Hyperfixation Expert is here to continue the hyperfixation. Pacific Rim follows a former Jaeger pilot and an untested trainee as they attempt to push back a giant Kaiju and keep the world from the edge of defeat in their war against the Kaiju.
Icon and Inferno by Marie Lu (NetGalley)-- This is the second book in the series which follows a spy and a pop star as they team together to take down a very bad man. I reread book one recently and remembered how much I love Winter and Sydney. In the first one, we saw Winter brought into the agency and trained up as he joined Sydney on a mission to bring a rich, and bad, man to justice. I was so worried reading book one the first time that this would be a one and done situation with their partnership, but in book two we've got the gang back together and I'm so excited. This time things get a little more personal for Sydney which I think will really up the stakes (and possibly the romance).
The Calculation of You and Me by Serena Kaylor (NetGalley)-- The GoodReads pitch is as follows: "A calculus nerd enlists her surly classmate's help to win back her ex-boyfriend, but when sparks start to fly, she realizes there's no algorithm for falling in love." I'm excited to meet this moody musician and this math nerd and see how they inevitably fall in love. I've read from this author before so I'm excited to dive on in to a new one.
The Stars Too Fondly by Emily Hamilton (NetGalley)-- When I heard Kayla from BooksandLala talk about this one, I had to request it. This is going to be a genre mash-up that could be everything for me: Sci-Fi/Romance. It's pitched as "part space odyssey, part sapphic rom-com." Four twenty-somethings accidentally steal a spaceship and as the ship travels deeper into space, the laws of physics start twisting and old mysteries come crawling back to life. I'm going to try to go into this one without knowing too much, but I was so excited to get an ARC for this one.
I do want to clarify that reading all of these is my goal for the month of May. But I started a class in April and if I need to then I will start pulling things off of my TBR in order to keep up with my coursework. I'm hoping that having a couple of short and easy reads for the month will make it easier to hit my daily page goals.

I just saw someone say that Tim was the only member of the batfamily who didnât suck at math.
With the exception of Dick (acrobatics) and Cass (body language) none of the Batkids are THAT much better than the others at a certain skill
Yes Jason is a better shot
Yes Tim is a better detective
And on a technical level theyâre much better
Sure
But that means that if they have a 0.001% chance of cracking a case or making a shot. There will be a noticeable difference between Tim being the character or say Damian.
Otherwise
Not particularly.
Think of each skill like a normally distributed curve okay with the mean being your average hero/olympian/hacker/genius
Right
The Batkids will be at the 96th percentile in the skill
With the exception of 1 of them being at the 99th percentile range
Unless you are writing something you can comfortably say is complex/difficult enough to warrant drawing attention to the 3% difference. Itâs annoying to bring it up
I exclude Dick and Cass
Because Dicks introduction is the fact he can do something the rest of the kids canât to the point where itâs an identifier within his own story. Itâs how Tim found him, a signature only he can do.
And Cass because she is genuinely cartoonishly cracked in her own storyline and in batfamily stuff sheâs borderline a mind reader
(Could also argue Jason for supernatural stuff and the all blades)
These are exceptions because yeah
If you told me Jason, Dick or Steph cracked a difficult case in a run I wouldnât treat it as shocking information
If you told me Tim, Dick or Damian managed a tricky shot with a firearm in a dire situation (like what happens in the Grayson run) it would be interesting, surprising but like not? Shocking?
If you told me that Jason did a quadruple summersault off a building and landed on his feet Iâd be confused as shit
And even WITH Dick and Cass the other kids are still FREAKISHLY good at D&Cs special skills but they both have unignorable signatures
This is a very long winded way of saying when an author simplifies a character down to
âOh look nice flippy oneâ
âSmart oneâ
âAngry gun oneâ
âPet collectorâ
Itâs annoying because you basically ignore all the interesting overlap
Like guess what Dick literally has a habit of collecting strays (see the rabbit and 3 legged dog he lives with in his apartment in the new run)
Tim is fucking badass and is very good at dealing with explosives
Damian is canonically currently thinking of leaving the family business and no longer being a hero to maybe focus on helping people in other ways
Jason occasionally works with magic and demon bullshit
And every single one of them is a genius okay literally every single one of them could get a masters in physics, chem, bio and history in like 2 weeks flat.
Their stats are stacked
All of them know enough info to be able to do 99% of a task and yeah someone might call Tim or Dick in for detective help or Jason for muscle and restraining backup but in 99% of cases THE OTHER CHARACTERS SHOULD BE EQUALLY competent
#dick grayson#jason todd#tim drake#batfam#dc fanon#like listen to me Dick Grayson once calculated how many flips heâd need to break the force of a fall#while he was falling#Jason is canonically a genius#Tim can canonically be as unhinged as Jason#sometimes Iâm grateful Steph isnât popular bc I can just ignore all the annoying fanon and focus on the fun fanon#like thereâs more slay canon and funny fanon than ugh why are you like this fanon#Duke is too new in development for me to feel like heâs dealing with this#they were all trained by Bruce Wayne#do you really and truly think heâd let them have flaws?#he beat dick up bc he fucked up and died#Iâm paraphrasing and mostly joking okay

Catch up on the BMD-verse. ⤾ď¸
đ Break Me Down Masterlist
In four years of marriage, one thing that had never changed between you and Ben was this.
âAll right, youâre being a little too much right now,â you said in irritation. âOf course Iâm not sitting this one out. Iâm the one who found us the damn lead in the first place.â
The man was following you from the adjoining bathroom and back into your shared bedroom, where you began getting dressed for work in the blouse and pencil skirt youâd laid out for yourself.
Your husband had already donned his supe suit, sans helmet. He stood just behind you with his arms crossed, a familiar surly frown on his face. When you turned around, he hadnât moved an inch.
âIâm being too much? Youâre the one whoâs not being fucking reasonable,â he said.
You rolled your eyes and moved past him to find your shoes. For this skirt, you really needed heels. Your most comfortable black pumps would do. You grabbed the closet doorknob for balance as you slipped them on, giving him a look of exasperation.
Ben held firm on his stance, but inside, he had a feeling youâd chosen this outfit on purpose. You knew he liked this whole sexcretary look on you, with your hair let down around your shoulders. The skirt and heels just brought his eyes to the delectable curve of your ass.
But again, he was holding firm.
Heâd been called in on this case partly because Annie was on maternity leave. She was due in just a few weeks. Which meant âSoldier Boyâ was definitely needed to help out Butcher and his merry band of assholes. By now, Ben had gotten used to them. Â
âLook,â you said, âSlingshot has been causing a lot of havoc, and the police havenât been able to catch him. You heard Grace. This is an âall hands on deckâ situation.â
âShe always says that shit. Doesnât make it true,â Ben retorted.
âThis time it is,â you said. âIâve already put in tons of man hours on surveillance for this guy. I want to get him off the street.â
Ben held you by your arms. âThatâs exactly my point. Youâve been putting in way too many hours.â
You shook your head. He just didnât get it.
âIf I hadnât, we wouldnât have this opening now,â you said. You gave him a smile to try and lighten him. âNow heâs all teed up for you and the guys. This should be in and out. Practically a milk run for you.â
âYeah, but not for you,â he pointed out. âAnd not for Lila. Youâre stretching yourself too damn thin. Itâs not like we need the money.â
Ahh, now we get to it, you thought. Yet again, he was bringing this up. In his mind, you shouldâve cut your hours at Supe Affairs after Lila was born.
You did take an extended maternity leave of an entire year and a half, which was much more than women usually got from their jobs. However, because of your relationship with Grace and the entire team, youâd been allowed to come back whenever you felt ready.Â
Ben had often felt it necessary to point out that with his money, you didnât have to work at all.Â
He knew very well that for you, this work was more than a job.Â
âIâm not the first working mom in existence, Ben,â you said, pushing out of his hold. âAnd Iâll remind you that Supe Affairs has a great daycare program. Lilaâs very happy there.â
Plus, she was almost three and a half years old. In less than a year, Lila would be off to preschool.
âAnd look, itâs not about the money,â you added. âI told you before Lila was born. I am a mother, and Iâm your wife. But Iâm still me.â
Ben processed that for a moment, meeting your gaze.
âThe situationâs changed,â he replied. He grasped your hips this time. His thumb gently brushed over your belly, which had a small bump under your high-waisted skirt.Â
You were finally pregnant again. Three months, in fact, and you were having a boy. You knew that Ben had several reasons to be more protective than usualâŚbut still. You thought you were already taking every precaution to keep you and your children safe, even with the occasionally extensive hours of your job.
âThese cases can be long and difficult, not to mention dangerous,â said Ben. His green eyes met yours as he looked down at you through furrowed brows. âYouâre putting yourself at risk.â
You blew out a breath and tried to placate him, soothing a hand over his chest.Â
âIâve stopped doing field missions,â you pointed out. âAnd Supe Affairs is the most secure building in the city. Do you think I would bring Lila there if it wasnât?â
The security team at the S.A. was bar none, not only because Loco was a part of that team. Frank was also your personal bodyguard; Ben hired him back when you found out you were pregnant with Lila.
In fact, Frank was coming to the house in a few minutes to pick you all up.
Ben frowned. âI think youâre being stubborn just to be fucking stubborn.â
That sparked at your temper. Again, you withdrew from his arms and crossed yours.
âI think you need to face the fact that Iâm protected as well as I can be,â you said. âI also think that youâre trying to use this as a way to shoehorn me into some antiquated idea of what you still think a wife should be. Iâm gonna tell you right now. Thatâs not me! Itâs never been me. And you know that.â
He opened his mouth to give an angry retort, but you beat him to it.
âItâs like you donât even care about what I want,â you snapped. âJust what you think is rightâfor me to be here waiting for you to come home, quite literally barefoot and pregnant, ready to rub your balls!â
ClichĂŠ as it mightâve been to say, if the shoe fit, then you were certainly not going to be the one to wear it.
âYou know what, you can accuse me of being stuck in the fucking past all you want,â Ben said, raising a finger, as well as his voice. âBut the problem here isnât me. Itâs that what you want is goddamn idiotic!â
Your mouth fell agape. âExcuse me?! I canât even believe you right now!â
Ben fairly loomed above you when he shouted back.
âWell, that makes fucking two of us!â
His voice was loud enough to reverberate on the walls. You even flinched, but you held your ground with a glareâŚ
Until you heard a whimper.
You and Ben paused, and turned to find Lila. The three-year-old was cowering a bit in the doorway to your bedroom. Her eyes welled up with tears, and she began to cry.
Your heart broke.
âOh, honey,â you breathed. You were both apologetic and mortified as you quickly went to her.
Ben was close behind you, but while Lila was quick to melt into your arms when you picked her up, she shied away from his attempt to reach out to her. What wouldâve been a placating hand on her head, turned into him pausing in surprise when she ducked.
âLila?â he prodded.
He tried to mask how put out he was by his daughter hiding her face from him, burrowing into your neck instead. She was usually a daddyâs girl, through and through.
You shot him a knowing frown, while rubbing her back in comfort.
âItâs okay, baby,â you told her. âYour dad and I were justâŚtalking. He didnât mean to shout.â
When Lila only whimpered in response, Benâs gaze dimmed in understanding. His lips pursed.
You saw that look on his face, and you wanted to sigh. Part of you felt bad for him, at the way Lila had flinched away from her father. In a way though, maybe it was a lesson he needed to learn.
Frank arrived a few minutes later in a black SUV, like he did every weekday morning to bring you all to work. Ben was quiet and taciturn climbing into the backseat on one side, and you clipped Lila into her car seat from the other side. He still made sure that she was strapped in correctly, and even tried to earn his daughterâs gaze.
She snuck a glance at him a couple of times, but quickly lowered it to play with one of her favorite stuffed animal toys (a little German shepherd that he had gotten for her).
Ben let out a long breath through his nose. He gave Frank a nod through the rearview mirror, and the other man peeled away from the house.
The four of you rode in silence away from your house in Scarsdale, towards New York City.
Benâs mood remained grim, even when you all got to Supe Affairs. Frank held back while you and Ben stopped in the hallway with Lila. You were carrying her, and she was holding onto you and her stuffed animal like a lifeline instead of looking anywhere elseânamely at Ben.
You sighed and tried to pull her back enough to see her face.
âDaddyâs gotta go to work now. Want to say goodbye?â you encouraged.
All Lila could manage was a shy look in his direction. Ben laid a gentle hand on her head, over her dark hair.
âBye, sweetheart,â he said.
Lila didnât answer him. She just bit her lip and stayed withdrawn.
You and Ben shared a glance. He was hiding it well behind his usual stoicism, but this was hurting him. There wasnât much either of you could do about it now, however. You both had work to do, and the mission would have to come first.
âIâll be online in a bit,â you told him.Â
First, you needed to take Lila up to daycare before Frank accompanied you to your office. There youâd be able to join the mission from your computer and put your headset on. Aside from surveillance, you were their virtual eyes on missions.Â
So Ben tacitly agreed, and the two of you parted ways.
You went up to the second floor to drop Lila off at daycare, where you set her onto her feet. You could see that she was quiet and almost sad, not as bright and talkative as usual. And she was clinging to your hand. You bent down the best you could in your skirt, so you could meet her eyes.
âAre you still upset with your dad?â you asked.Â
After a moment, Lila replied, âDaddyâs loud.â
You couldnât help a rueful smile.Â
âYeah, he can be,â you nodded. âBut heâs gonna work on that, okay? He loves you very much.â
She finally smiled a little when you pressed a few sweet kisses to her cheeks. You felt a little better about leaving her with Sarah, the woman who ran the daycare center. She was kind, but well-organized, and good at her job of wrangling fifteen or so toddlers on a daily basis.
And she was hovering off to the side with a smile, waiting to shepherd Lila over to where the rest of the group were starting at the arts and crafts table.
âOkay, baby. I love you. Iâm just downstairs if you need me,â you said, caressing Lilaâs cheeks, brushing her hair away from her face.
She nodded and waved goodbye. Sarah then stepped in and guided the girl over to the crafts table. The other kids were already drawing and coloring with crayons and markers.
With a sigh, you knew you had to get to work. You joined Frank out in the hall.
âDid something happen this morning?â he asked. You gave him a weary look.
âSomething always happens. Iâll fill you in when we hit the elevator,â you said.
âKids are resilient. Sheâll bounce back,â said Frank, when you two got off the elevator down to the basement, under the first floor. This was where the âheavy stuffâ happened at the S.A.
âThatâs not the point, Frank. He hasnât snapped at me like that in a long time, and he really scared her. Thatâs not fucking okay,â you said. âHe needs to learn to control his goddamn temper.â
He sent you a knowing glance. You rolled your eyes.
âOkay, I know I donât always help. But in this case, I was justified,â you said. âBen was being an ass.â
âRight,â Frank nodded. âItâs not at all that heâs worried about you.â
You narrowed your eyes at him. âWhose side are you on?â
The man remained silent, but his stoic face wasnât fooling you. Heâd been your friend for much too long, and he knew Ben just as wellâŚwhich was why you found yourself reconsidering what happened this morning.
âYou really think he has a point?â you asked. âAm I working too much?â
Frank shook his head and opened the door for you into the Surveillance Department. The two of you ventured to your office, where your quadruple monitor setup was waiting for you. He also had a desk for himself, since he often spent the long hours of your day with you.
âWhen you were pregnant with Lila, you were on maternity leave by now,â he pointed out.
âBecause we had no idea what was going to happen,â you countered. You went to your desk and started up your computer. âI had to meet with Tonya once a week, ultrasounds and blood tests all the time, making sure Lila was healthy, that I was healthy. This time around, we have a better idea of what to expect.â
For example, you were experiencing bouts of super strength once again, but it was still intermittent. Although, you pretty much never needed coffee. Maybe the supe genes coursing through your system, thanks to your unborn son, was part of the reason why youâd been able to go such long hours for these cases.
He's already brightening up my life, you thought with a little smile, holding a hand over your lower belly.
âItâs your choice,â Frank said at last. âBut it is possible that Ben cares about more than just making you a suburban housewife.â
At that, you sighed. There was nothing wrong with being a housewife, you knew. It just wasnâtâŚyou.
Once your computer and monitors were booted up, you connected to the right channels and put on your headset.
Already you could hear M.M. bitching about keeping the weapons trunk organized, not just tossing things in haphazardly.Â
âItâs a simple fucking system, Frenchie. You can at least abide by it,â M.M. said. âWe donât have time to be scratching our asses while you try to find aââ
âHey, Bert and Ernie. Would you shut the fuck up already?â Ben groused.
Your mouth twitched at his grumpiness.
âA little testy this morning, ey guv?â Butcher remarked.
âGargle my ball sack,â Ben replied, with an even grouchier deadpan than usual.
âDo you kiss your child with that mouth?â Frenchie teased.Â
âNah, just your motherâs French hole,â Ben slung back. You rolled your eyes.Â
âAll right, all right. Put the measuring tapes away,â you interrupted. âIâm online, locked on your GPS.â
âWell, if it ainât Mrs. America herself,â Butcher drawled. âGot a lock on Slingshotâs location for us?âÂ
âYou know it,â you replied. âSending to the group chat now. Slingshotâs been spotted entering a strip club in Chinatown.âÂ
âJeez. A little early for tits and booze. Itâs 10:00 a.m. on a Tuesday,â said Hughie.
You heard Ben huff in amusement. âItâs never too early.â
You snorted at that.
âRight. Iâll remember that next time you fall asleep watching Family Feud,â you clipped back.
You heard the other guys trying not to laugh as they got into Butcherâs van. Part of you felt bad for teasing Ben, knowing he was already in a bad mood, but you were feeling a bit petty about what happened this morning.
You had to bite your lip against a smile, as you could picture the ill-tempered face your man was likely sporting.
And weâre off.
Lila wasnât having a good day.Â
She didnât feel like coloring, and the toys just werenât fun today.
She just didnât want to be here. The other kids smelled like old Cheetos and feet (especially the boys).
She missed you. And though she hadnât wanted to admit it to you, she missed Daddy too.
Lila wanted to go homeâŚshe wanted her mom.Â
âIâm just downstairs if you need me,â youâd said.
Lila had a kind of plan percolating in her mind, all through the morning, and even through lunch time. She didnât want to get in trouble, but when sheâd asked Miss Sarah if she could go see you, sheâd said you were at work and couldnât come get Lila until later.Â
But thatâs not what Mommy said, Lila thought. Â
After lunch, she laid on the napping mat with her pillow and blanket, even though she was wide awake. She didnât want to nap with the other kids, even though Miss Sarah told her it was time to sleep.Â
Again, Lila didnât want to be bad. She didnât want to get in trouble either, but she really, really just wanted to see you.
And youâd said it was okay to go downstairs if she needed you, right?
Lila closed her eyes while Miss Sarah was looking, but she waited until the teacher went into her office to answer a call. Then, Lila carefully put Charlie, her stuffed dog, against her pillow, tucking the blanket up to his neck.Â
She crawled off her mat and snuck over to the door while Miss Sarah was distracted on her phone. Lila reached up and was just tall enough to twist the doorknob. It led her out of the room, and out into the empty hall. She then looked both ways for a clue on where to go.Â
She heard a ding, and looked over at a nearby pair of elevators.
The mission went more or less according to plan. Slingshotâs abilities allowed him to stretch every part of his body like elastic. It not only made him hard to catch, but even harder to maim without collateral damage.Â
A whole block in Chinatown was wrecked in the takedown, but your idea of ripping the cables from a nearby utility pole to electrocute him let Ben finally subdue the elastic supe. Kimiko knocked him out, and Butcher slapped some tight-ass cuffs on him and dragged him into the van. They returned with the rogue supe in custody.Â
You were mentally exhausted from helping them track down routes to pin down Slingshot, but you were relieved to be done. You were also satisfied that another danger to society was neutralized, for now.
You took pride in your work, and you didnât think Ben saw that, or thought it was important. You supposed that was what upset you the most about that fight with him.
Sometimes, you wondered if he would ever truly change.
You grabbed your purse and made sure to slip in your gun and taser. You left your office and greeted Frank, who had just finished making his rounds in the building with Locoâs team. Frank joined you on the way to the elevator.
âI meant to ask you, howâs Alana doing?â you asked. Alana was his daughter, who was now in college.
âSheâs changed her major yet again,â he said wryly. âThis time to philosophy.â
âPhilosophy? Thatâs interesting. What does she want to do with that?â you asked.
âNo fucking clue,â he replied, hitting the button for the first floor. âI just hope she gets bored and picks something practical. LikeâŚteaching, or dentistry.â
You shot him a bemused look. âDentistry?â
âAs much money as I put into that girlâs braces, itâd be good for her to pay it forward,â Frank said, in a surly tone that reminded you of Ben. You had to laugh.
You and Frank exited the elevator and started down the hall.
You planned to touch base with Grace Mallory on the safety measures of Slingshotâs containment before he was put into custody. The idea was to house him in a prison cell that could actually hold him until he went through the legal process.Â
But youâd only gotten halfway down the hall before the supe in question literally stretched past you on unnaturally long legsâin a blur of his white and blue supe suit. Your eyes widened on a gasp as you watched him head toward the elevator youâd just come off of.Â
âFuckinâ hell, weâve got a runner!â Butcher shouted from down the hall. He along with Ben, M.M., Frenchie, Hughie, and Kimiko were rushing your way.Â
It all happened so fast.Â
You registered Frank shooting out a protective arm in front of you. You turned back to see the elevator doors had opened back up, and Slingshot rushed inside. He made eye contact with you.
Then his arms shot out like rubber bands. One of them knocked Frank into the far wall. You gasped and froze on reflex.Â
Ben shouted your name; he was running towards you, getting closer. You were able to meet his wide eyes for a brief moment. He reached out for you, but those stretching arms closed around you first. You gasped when they slung you backwards.
You cried out in shock when your back met a surprisingly solid chest.
Meanwhile, Ben barreled the rest of the way down the hall as the elevators closed just short of his angrily furrowed face.
The stretched arms holding you were tight around your torso, making your grit your teeth as you tried to pull away. They twisted you around so you could face your captor. Or so he could see you.
His natural height was around Butcherâsâdark hair, blue eyes, angular features. He gave you what was probably meant to be a suave smile as those baby blues dragged down your body.
âHey, baby. Nice heels,â he said. You rolled your eyes.
âSo thatâs why they call you Slingshot,â you said, still a bit breathless. The elevator started to move. Heâd chosen the top floor. âWhere do you think youâre gonna go?â
âIsnât it obvious?â he snarked. âAnywhere but here. And youâre gonna help me.â
âHow? Being a human shield?â
âFor a start,â he smirked down at you. He backed up a step just to take another proper look at you, and he whistled lowly. He took your chin between his sweaty fingers, making you grimace when he stroked your cheek.Â
âDown boy,â you said warily. âTrust me, you really donât want to do this.â
This jackass hadnât even realized you had a small, but noticeable baby bump.
âWhy not, babe?â he grinned. âYouâve got the whole sexy librarian thing going on.âÂ
You heard a loud creaking sound outside the elevator doors. The compartment itself came to an abrupt stop, making the lights flicker.Â
âWhat the fuck?â Slingshot muttered. His hold around you loosened.Â
You had an idea of what just happened, with grim satisfaction. You also took advantage of his distraction and managed to slip a hand into your purse.
You pulled out your taser. Slingshot noticed and tried to grab you again, but the elevator somehow started to move in reverse, about a foot a time. It made both of you lose your balance and utter sounds of surprise. Â
As soon as you regained your footing, you aimed the taser at the most sensitive place you could think ofâthe supeâs dick and balls.
His howls of pain were loud enough to reach Ben, Frank, and the rest of the team on the third floor. Benâs face became edged with a smirk.Â
He kept pulling the elevator cables down until the compartmentâs doors were in reach. There he grabbed the doors and pulled them open with his bare hands, crunching metal under his fingers. The moment he saw you, the relief in your eyes, he grabbed your hand and pulled you out, into his arms.Â
Slingshot was angry, though he managed to recover, rip off the taserâs metal prongs and wires, and evade Kimiko, M.M., and even Butcher when he slithered his way out of the elevator and around their guns. The bullets ricocheted off the walls, and off his body as they followed him down the hall.
Ben focused on you. He brushed his half-gloved hands over your shoulders and sides while he quickly looked you over. There was worry in his eyes, disguised as anger. You caught your breath and held a protective hand over your lower belly out of reflex.Â
âYou okay?â he said, but you were already nodding before he asked.
âIâm fine,â you replied. âJust get him. Iâll get Lila.âÂ
Ben nodded. He shot one last firm look at Frank, who was back at your side. Frank laid a hand on your shoulder as Ben took off down the hall to find Slingshot.Â
âThe stairs are safer at this point,â Frank said.Â
âI would have to agree,â you said, steeling yourself with a breath.Â
While you and Frank went downstairs to the second floor, you didnât see the second elevator ding, its doors opening to your daughter, who ambled out alone. She looked one way down the hall, but hearing her fatherâs voice carrying down the opposite way, she started venturing in that direction.
If she couldnât find you, then sheâd find her dad.Â
âWhat the hell do you mean you lost her?â you shouted at Sarah, the woman who was supposed to be looking after your daughter. âHow do you lose a three-year-old at nap time? What kind of incompetent fuck are you?â
Yes, Ben had unfortunately rubbed off on you.Â
Sarah was in tears by the time you were not even halfway done, but Frank calmed you down with another touch to your shoulder. You had tears of panic stinging in your eyes when you met his gaze, your mouth trembling.
âI just radioed in and put Loco and the rest of the security team on looking for Lila. She canât have gotten far,â he said.Â
âCome on! Keep up with me, old man,â Slingshot taunted at Ben. His super flexibility allowed him to keep several steps ahead, dodging any attempts to grab him and any weapons fired with easy dips and playful deflection.Â
âWhen I get my hands on you, you flaccid fuck, you wonât know your ass from your ball sack,â Ben growled.Â
But he crashed into the wall when he took a corner too hard trying to tackle the other supe. He picked himself up from the debris of crumbled wall and plaster, ignoring Kimikoâs offer of a helping hand.Â
âBig fucking talk from the walking AARP commercial,â Slingshot snorted. He turned around and once again prepared to run. âTry not to shatter a hip, asshole!â
He took off down another bend in the hallway. Meanwhile, Ben shook himself off and joined the others in running after this cocksucker. Ben looked over at Butcher.
âWhatâs your fucking plan?â he grated out.Â
Butcher seemed to have an idea growing in his mind. âWhatâd she do to him in that elevator?â
âTased his dick, by the sound of it,â Ben replied. He knew what weapons you kept in your purse, and that you'd know better than to fire a gun in an enclosed elevator. Butcher snapped his fingers.
âElectricity. Bloody brilliant,â he said. He pointed at Hughie and grabbed Frenchie by the collar. âYou, with me. Iâve got an idea. The rest of ya, get him pinned down.â
âEasier said than done, motherfucker,â M.M. grumbled. But he followed Ben and Kimiko to find their errant supe.Â
Slingshot played a cocky game, but inside, there was fear.Â
Theyâd caught him once, and now, this building was crawling with security, let alone the assholes chasing him.
He was panting for breath when he nearly ran straight intoâŚa kid?Â
She was wandering around, trying to open a locked door. He skidded to a stop in front of her, and she looked up at him wide-eyed. He tilted his head. She was a cute little thing with brown hair and green eyes. She wore a blouse with cartoon ducks on it over her jeans and sunshine-yellow shoes.Â
âHey, cutie. Where you going?â asked Slingshot. âAre you lost?â
âLooking for my mom,â she answered, a bit timidly. The supe gave her an easy smile; inside, he knew heâd just found his collateral, and his ticket out of here.Â
âOkay. Whatâs your name?â he asked.Â
âLâŚLila,â she said.Â
âPretty name for a pretty girl,â he said, with all due charm. He struck a pose, with his fists held up to his waist. âI can help you, Lila. Iâm a superhero.â
Her eyes widened. âReally? Like Daddy?â
âOh, yeah. Your dad and I are friends.â Never mind that he had no fucking clue who her daddy was. He offered her his hand.Â
Now, Lila knew not to talk to strangers, but if he knew her dadâŚÂ
After a moment of reluctant indecision, she took his hand. Slingshot tapered a smirk into a more friendly smile.Â
âLetâs go find him.â Â
Ben was ahead of the pack, but he soon came to an abrupt stop with wider eyes. He finally found Slingshot, except he had Benâs daughter by the hand. Slingshot wore a cocky grin as he took the child up into his arms.Â
âHey, guys. Whoâs this little peanut belong to?â he asked. âSaid she was looking for her daddy.âÂ
Benâs breath turned to lead in his lungs. Lilaâs eyes lit up with recognition when she saw him.Â
âDaddy!â
Benâs softer gaze shifted from her, hardening once it reached the other supe.Â
âLet her go,â he growled lowly.Â
Slingshotâs grin deepened incredulously as he laughed.
âOh shit, sheâs yours?â he exclaimed. âThisâs just too fucking perfect.â
âLila!â your shout came from behind Ben, and you stepped around M.M. and Kimiko.
Ben held out a hand to keep you at bay. He kept his eyes on Slingshot, but Ben heard your gasp. His stomach dipped, knowing your worry had to be reaching new heights as you took in the situation.
âBen,â you uttered.Â
âIâve got this,â he said to you.
âYou donât got shit, old man,â Slingshot snapped. He shot you a smirk next. âSheâs your bitch? Figures.â
âJust let her go,â you implored. You had tears brimming in your eyes. âWe can negotiate your release if you promise to be more responsible.â
Ben shot you a glance then. He didnât intend for this fucker to live, let alone walk the streets of New York again. But he supposed any bluff was worth it at this point.
Meanwhile, seeing the distress on her parentsâ faces made Lila begin to break down into tears. She whined, pushing against the supe holding her, wanting to be let go.Â
âItâs okay, sweetie,â Slingshot cooed. âYouâre just gonna take a little trip with me.â
âNo!â a ragged shout tore from your throat when he took a few backward steps down the hall.Â
Ben held you back from following him, all while he tensed with rage. M.M. and Kimiko were also poised to try and stop the supe. But Slingshot tightened his hold on Lila in warning.
âBack the fuck off,â he demanded. âOnce I get to JFK and get my ass on a plane, maybe, maybe you see your daughter agaââ
He had to stop short, as he sensed something just outside of his peripheral vision.
It was Butcher, coming at him to swing a baseball bat at the supeâs head.
You screamed in protest, but Butcher was relying on the supeâs reflexes to dodge the bat. He wasnât disappointed. Slingshot dodged. Though in his distraction, it gave Ben the opening he needed to step into his orbit and land a solid punch across Slingshotâs face.
It not only cracked his jaw, but also caught him off guard enough for his grip on the child to loosen. Ben grabbed his daughter and turned her away in a protective embrace.
Then Frenchie brought Slingshot down with the prongs of a massive taser clipping onto his nipples. He jolted and screamedâand went down hard on the tile floor.Â
While Hughie and M.M. ushered in the rest of the security team to swarm in and take the supe into custody, you raced forward to Ben and Lila in tears.
Lila was also crying and clinging to Benâs neck, shaking like a leaf.
âItâs okay, sweetheart. Iâve got you,â he said quietly, so only she could hear. Lila whimpered and burrowed tighter against his neck.
Tears streamed down your face, but you tried to breathe through it. You rubbed her back and checked her over, making sure she wasnât hurt.Â
For Ben, the force of his relief was pounding in his ears. He briefly closed his eyes as he held his daughter closer.Â
When he opened them again, he met your gaze. You couldnât speak. All you could do was grab onto his wrist for support. He gave that to you, wrapping his free arm around your waist and pulling you into his side.Â
âFrank,â he said. His voice was a sharp command. The other man was ready to carry out whatever Ben asked. He also looked relieved to see that Lila was all right.
âPull the car around,â said Ben. Frank nodded, and went to do just that.
Ben turned to watch in satisfaction when Frenchie and M.M. hauled up a still twitching Slingshot. Butcher slapped a pair of electroshock handcuffs on him that would keep him better contained this timeâcourtesy of the S.A. armory. He nodded over at Ben, and the latter returned the gesture.Â
You missed it all, as you were preoccupied with comforting your daughter.
âItâs okay, honey. Weâre going home,â you gently whispered to Lila, who was still hiding her face in Benâs neck. You shared a look with him, and he gave you a short nod. His hand moved to the small of your back, both protective and possessive as the three of you moved towards the garage exit.Â
There Frank waited with the car that would take your family home.
You watched Ben with the beginning of tears brimming in your eyes. You managed to hold them at bay while he set Lila down in her bed. Youâd just finished giving her a bath and helping her get into her pajamas after a quiet, somewhat tense dinner.Â
Lila still seemed upset in her unusually quiet mood, which you knew was understandable. Ben sat at her bedside and soothed a hand over her head, brushing her cheek with his thumb.Â
âYouâve had a crazy frigginâ day, huh?â he asked. Lila didnât want to look at him, but he encouraged it with gentle fingers brushing her chin, teasing the tip of her nose. She hinted at a smile and finally met his eyes. He smiled back at her, if more reserved. But his expression turned serious again.
âWhatâs wrong?â he asked. He could see it. She had been more or less fine throughout dinner, but now sheâd turned quiet and withdrawn again. She only got like that when she was upset about something.
Lila toyed with the ear of her stuffed animal, Charlie. Frank had retrieved it for her from the daycare.
âSorry I talked to strangers,â Lila mumbled.
You had to bite the inside of your lip so you wouldnât cry. You came over to sit on the other side of her bed. You sniffed and shook your head, but Ben beat you to what you wanted to say.Â
âYouâre not in trouble, all right? Weâre not mad,â he said.Â
Lilaâs lower lip wobbled. Ben sighed and picked her up, plopping her down in his lap. She hugged him as tight as she could and he held her back, warm and secure. Â
âYou know Iâm always gonna be there to keep you safe. You never have to worry or be afraid,â he said.Â
You carded your fingers through Lilaâs hair so she knew you were there too. Usually, the roles were reversed, where you were doing the comforting and Ben was the solid support. Right now though, you just didnât have the words. Not when guilt was eating you from the inside out.
Fortunately, your husband did have the words, after he heaved a sigh.Â
âI might raise my voice, sometimes, but uhâŚyou never have to be afraid of me either. Okay?â he said.
"Mhmm," Lila agreed.
You laid hand on Ben's arm, gently squeezing. He met your gaze, and knew what you were prodding with just that look in your eyes.
Briefly, he hesitated before he looked back down at his daughter.
"I'm sorry I scared you," he said.
Lila nodded against his chest. âIt's okay.â
âGood,â he said, laying a kiss on her forehead. âAll right, you ready to go to bed?â
She clung to him and made a sound of refusal.Â
You were finally able to crack a smile. You leaned down by her ear.Â
âYou want Daddy to read you a story first?â you asked.Â
Ben shot you a look at the way you volunteered him for that. He was tired and drained.Â
But one hopeful, shiny look from his daughter, and he folded like a deck of cards.
Later, when Lila was asleep, you tucked her in one last time and Ben turned out the light. He kept the door cracked open, just in case she called for either one of you tonight.
Then, somehow, you and Ben ended up in the kitchen instead of the bedroom. As exhausted as both of you were, you needed this moment to decompress, with one of your old favorite pastimesâŚ
He broke out the whiskey while you found an appropriate midnight snack, and then a seat with him at the breakfast bar. The two of you shared a companionable silence, as well as a large bag of sea salt and vinegar chips.Â
That was sort of how you felt inside.
âToday canât happen again,â Ben said, breaking the silence.Â
You looked over at him, but he was looking beyond you. Maybe so he didnât have to show you how deeply heâd been rattled. You knew him far too well for that.Â
âOf course not,â you replied. And you released a sigh. âSo hereâs what Iâm thinking. From now on Iâll work from home, so I can watch Lila until she goes to preschool.â
Ben got ready to argue, but you held up a hand. The other went to rest over your belly. You had scheduled an ultrasound with Dr. Tonya Baker tomorrow, just to make sure all was well after this ordeal.
âI already plan to take my maternity leave when this guy rolls into town,â you said with a smile. âThen, when Iâm ready, and if itâs feasible, I can continue to work from home until all the kids are in school.â
Benâs lips twitched humorlessly. He shouldâve known youâd continue making this a negotiation. He set down his glass, and he reached out to slide a hand over yours, across your belly. He took in a deep breath. But when he let it go, you sensed you still hadnât convinced him.
âListen, I know you donât want me to workââ you began.
âItâs not that,â he said. He made sure you looked him in the eyes when he said it. âItâs not.â
Despite yourself, you read the sincerity in his words. It had you pausing, waiting for him to continue.
âYou know damn wellâŚthat just being around me is dangerous,â he said. âTo you, and to Lila. But you being connected with Supe Affairs, working these missions, even from behind a desk, itâs a fucking risk. Itâll always be a risk.â
You considered that with new understanding. You took his hand with both of yours.
âBen, this life, this workâŚitâs the same for me as it is for you. Itâs all I know how to do. Itâs what Iâm wired for. So thatâs why itâs hard for me to turn down that dial,â you explained. âBut look, I understand what youâre saying. Believe me, I do. And todayâŚtoday wasâŚâ
Your breath hitched as tears stung in your eyes. Ben shook his head and tugged you closer.
âCome âere,â he said.
You left your chair to go to him. You stood between his long legs while he pulled you into a warm embrace. Logically, you knew that what happened today wasnât your fault. However, part of you still felt like a failure of a mother for underestimating the risks of having your daughter at the S.A. Â
You shouldâve known better, you berated yourself. And yet, it was Benâs words that stopped your train of thought.
âToday wasn't on you,â he said. "Get that thought outta your head."
He knew you well too, and this was one of those times. You wept harder against him, pressing your face into the crook of his neck. He held you, comforted you until you began to calm down.
âTake your maternity leave early,â he said. His deep voice was a rumble. âYouâre going to have your hands full with Lila when Iâm not here. Unless we hire someone to help you.â
It was an idea you could consider, but who could you trust? That was the question.Â
Maybe your mother? you thought. You knew she was thinking of retiring from her job in a couple of years anyway.
You sighed and slipped your fingers through Benâs hair. Your hand came to rest on the back of his neck as you leaned against him.
When Lila came into your lives, you had been so excited to start a family that you hadnât considered the non-physical side effects. Namely, the sacrifices you would have to make in order to keep your family safe.Â
Before you met Ben, your job was your life. But today reminded you that your daughterâŚand your unborn son, were more important to you than your job. No matter how important that job might be for the rest of the world.Â
âLetâs talk about this more tomorrow,â you said, shaking your head. âI canât think anymore.â
After a beat of hesitation, he agreed with a nod. Like so many battles before, whatever compromise you and Ben finally reached would be hard won. His hand found your cheek and caressed your skin.
âYou still try my fucking patience, you know that?â he muttered.
You smiled tiredly. âDid you really expect that to change?â
He scoffed. Even so, he guided you off his shoulder so that he could claim your lips. His kiss tasted like the burn of whiskey. You met his demanding lips in kind, though you were the first one to part from him slowly.Â
âI love you,â you whispered a reminder.Â
Ben nodded and pressed a kiss to your forehead. He lingered there for a moment, as if he could pause the world for a while.Â
He eventually let out a breath through his nose and allowed himself to be honest.
âI love you too,â he said.
With that shared understanding, he stood from his seat. He drained the last of his glass before he bent to gather you up into his arms. You yelped in surprise, clinging to his shoulders.
âTime for some rest,â Ben said. There was a certain smile on his face, gentler than usual.
He forged a path towards the bedroom. You sighed and laid your head against his chest.Â
For once, you didnât argue with him. Â
