steve rogers - a brief (nonsensical) character study/analysis

so i rewatched all the mcu movies with steve roger in them using this lovely youtube video. spoilers for the entire things! consider this your warning.

here's my takeaways in no particular order:

he still wears the same clothing style he wore pre-ice. often button ups, work boots, plain denim jeans, sometimes a leather jacket (often brown). later on in the mcu he started wearing plaid flannels which is funny to me because he does not give a SHIT about modern fashion. give him his old man clothes please and ty. adorable.

marvel did not give the man much character development. they said he's going to go through war and hell and death and fuckery of emotions. sure he's going to learn how to move on but that's off screen and don't really expect much change fuckers. this fucking pisses me off if you can't tell. he's such a long-time character with so many areas where he could be developed and marvel just said fuck that he's an "old man and a soldier with some funny moments" and that's all you're getting.

also he had 5 minutes MAX of screentime in infinity wars :(((( fucking hate that give my man justice

he's so funny????? and so fucking sassy???? like how did I not know this???? love the guy

he broods a ton when he's sad and cracks jokes to cheer others up when they're sad. very sweet but I feel like that marvel could have expanded on this in some way.

he's also very acrobatic which is somehow surprising to me but also at the same time it makes sense??? idk man but you do your flips bbg

also love the way they planned his fights. they really use his full body. reminds me of old greek and roman statues with the flexing muscles. (those are my favorites statues if you can't tell) it's satisfying to watch and I want to draw it or make a statue of him now tyvm.

in endgame tony started talking about his ass which sparked an entertaining side tangent. like you really didn't need to???? but I'll take it. i forgot that steve called HIS OWN ass the "ass of America." I was in and still am in shock from this whole situation.

when he met his other self (or smth I don't remember) in endgame one of the last things he said to other steve was "bucky is alive" (see points below). interesting how seeing the compass with peggy didn't phase other steve much.... also that fight is fucking ridiculous 1000/10

he says so much romantic/gay shit about bucky??? like "even when I had nothing I had bucky." very angsty and homoerotic I love it

the ending with peggy and him being old is plotted so shittily. literal garbage. i wouldn't have minded him being with peggy at all (love her sm btw don't mistake this for me hating her) if they had done it right and given cap a plausible reason and justification for him staying. sure, he misses her. sure, visiting her. but wouldn't staying with her fuck up everything??? literally everything????? like the avengers wouldn't exist everything????????? FUCK that ending.

not exactly fully cap/steve but chris evan's shoulder to waist ratio is absolutely delectable. love that they highlight that with the suits designs.

also what the fuck was infinity wars when he had a fucking beard and longer hair??? loved it but it kind of came out of left field. plus he looked a little silly fighting with the long hair bc it kept getting in his face. you would've thought that he would wear a helmet during that fight but Not Today ig...

last point I promise. but the romance with sharon carter (i forgot her name but i think that's it) was GROSS. whats her face is peggy's GRANDDAUGHTER. so now that he's too old for peggy he had to go for her granddaughter?????? YUCK. especially so because he went to peggy ANYWAYS in the mcu. to the comic writers and marvel: stop. that's fucking gross and quite honestly unneeded.

kind of a serious man with some unexpected twists, like the humor. and that was just the MOVIES. fucking hate some parts of the comics. (why are there so many universes ughhhhh) love steve though what an interesting fellow. might add on more thoughts later if i remember/want to.

Oooooooo are we going into the past with this episode? Hmmm I'm realizing I have very little backstory/comic knowledge of a lot of these characters, which honestly the show does a good enough job of giving a quick summary/ relying on everyone already knowing at least smth about them.

first, Steve is ultimately a peacekeeper first, making the ultimate sacrifice to put himself in the ice, but that doesn't make him one-dimensional, bc as we see w Bucky (excluding Endgame :/), he's willing to go to bat for anyone he deeply cares about

he loves your choice in music so much, especially the classical/older stuff. he missed out on a lot of pop culture from his time in the ice, so I feel like trying to catch up on music in our era would be a little overwhelming. BUT bc you can listen to music from the past, this gives him smth to connect w you on

clumsy dork = scott lang energy and I refuse to believe that Steve and Scott weren't best friends. Steve often gets painted as like the wet-blanket mom-friend, and sometimes, he can be. so the fact that you can be more relaxed and more childlike helps him unwind too. it shows him that he doesn't have to be the big, mature tough guy all the time, and that he's safe to have fun w you too

as much as you want to learn about new things, Steve is right there with you. I think he has just as big a thirst for learning, but he doesn't get to indulge in it that much, so whenever you're learning about a new topic, he's more than willing to help you study it, or be learning it right alongside you

also art! drawing each other! posing for each other! encouraging each other in your artistic pursuits! he'd love looking at whatever art piece or writing piece you were working on, and he'd be so happy to listen to you talk about it. like this boy would have literal stars in his eyes omg

also Steve would love Disney/Broadway and no one can convince me otherwise. like the man is a walking Disney prince so

overall, y'all just care so deeply for each other, and want to invest so much into each other that a relationship between you two is incredibly fulfilling. times when he's on missions are hard, but he always comes back to you, ready to decompress and ready to jump back into spending time with you. he's just so devoted to you and you'd be equally devoted to him

yeah!!! jarvis is one of those "v cool in concept please do not be real" type things?? like it might be morally wrong to kill an ai because he is sentient i don't really feel like thinking it over and it's really cool that we can do that now, but also the uses are. sketch. and sure it's cool that only tony has one and not like. the entire us government, but tony's a singular person capable of mistakes and it's way too much power with way too much potential for abuse for anyone to have, y'know???

oh absolutely!! i adore jarvis in the mcu, and from a technical perspective he’s very cool (and is a testament to how smart tony really is) and does make me consider how far along ai is in the mcu compared to us (jarvis seems to be truly his own ‘person’, capable of making decisions at a capacity far greater than what im aware of what we can do in real life and he seems far more advanced than what we have (like the extent of what jarvis can do seems far greater than what we can achieve w q learning or machine learning) to the point where he has his own personality, albeit modelled after a real life person)

honestly im glad that tony made jarvis when he was an adult and not a child (i don't know if you’ve seen it, but there’s a tv show called scorpion and the main character made smth that could be used to airdrop materials/aid to war ruined villages when he was 10/11 bc the us govt. found him after he hacked nasa and told him to and it turned out that they were using it to bomb the villages) and i know he’s generally considered to be a good guy/on the right side etc. but that amt of pure power, not even taking into consideration that he’s one of the richest guys in-universe, will go to his head 

even the fact that jarvis is there, functioning and exists is pretty much free real estate for govts. - tony is only human after all, if they wanted it they could probably blackmail him, but tony is a capitalist, i know he’s a good guy, but not all the people in his boardrooms are, and pre-iron man his primary concern in his day-to-day was to make money (which is another can of worms as to just how much of a change he went through in im1), what’s to say he won’t/didn’t use jarvis to extort the avg. citizen for that purpose?

i really don't want to say it, but shield have been portrayed as, well, useless (tony easily hacking them etc.) so where did they get the tech in tws (i cant remember the name but yk what i mean)?? tony wouldn't have sold it to them, but he might have sold it to the usarmy when he still had deals with them, someone on his payroll might have leaked it to them - as far as we know, tony’s the only one who had ai (i know that’s probably not going to be the case going forth, and that tony’s not the smartest guy in the mcu)

and as you said, is it even ‘morally right’ to end jarvis, say tony realises that he can be used for evil and puts a stop to it (gleefully ignoring aou bc it... it.) can he even put a stop to it, jarvis doesn’t really have any physicality that can be destroyed (gleefully ignoring aou) and if he does (servers?? idk man we never really covered that part of compsci) it’s not in tony’s residence, if it were i’d be more inclined to cut him some slack bc then it would be ‘truly’ his own, but his malibu mansion got destroyed and the fact that jarvis could have been destroyed wasn’t really a concern for tony then so im assuming no

and im going to guess that it’s not exactly a secret that tony stark has an ai in-universe, and honestly, the only reason it wouldn’t be confiscated (a la im2 courtroom scene for the iron man suit) by the govt is bc he’s rich (+ he was in kahoots w the army)

also tony himself it not a cooperation, i doubt the data that jarvis collects goes anywhere of consequence, but the constant monitoring, the omnipresence, i guess for tony it’s a reassurance more than anything else: he’s a guy who didn’t have the best parents as a kid etc., building jarvis was a way to cope with the loss (low-key it seems less ‘coping with the loss’ and more delaying the inevitable but that’s something else), he doesn’t have someone to take care of him anymore so he’ll build one, that’s what he does, but i wonder if he ever thought of the consequences (tws) of just convinced himself that he’s so far ahead of the curve that it doesn’t matter (his testament in im2, he’s arrogant and overconfident in his abilities, and that was after he was humbled by the events of im1, though later in the mcu he’s less, im just thinking of pre-mcu when he built jarvis)

also on the ‘tony created what is effectively a person’ angle, he is playing god to an extent
