Closed starter for @warhornofgondor. Muses: Boromir & Théodred.
Tumblr media
The Prince of the Riddermark arrived in Minas Tirith safely, without much of note - other than him and his entourage having had to dispatch a few wandering groups of orcs across their lands. The riders had been welcomed graciously by the men and women of Gondor, recognized by the horses running across the fields of their banners.
Théodred had been in the White City before with his father, whom had shown him places he remembered from childhood. However, the Prince's return had come at the request of the guard of Minas Tirith, and he was to meet with Captain General Boromir. The threat of Mordor had only ever grown, with the filth spewing forth over the mountains into the realm of men. Neither Gondor nor Rohan could hope to survive alone, for there was much knowledge to be shared between them.
The company of Eorlingas rode past the large, intricate gates in the solid black wall of Minas Tirith. When Théodred recognized Boromir in the square, he smiled warmly and dismounted from his horse, then swiftly approached him. "Ah, if it is not the Captain of the White Tower!" he cried, extending his hand in greeting. "How do you and the cities of your realm fare?" the horse-lord asked, pulling his sweaty helmet from his head. He expected the answer, but even so he had asked courteously.

“And what are you going to do?” There’s an arched brow, as arms cross over his chest. “Throw me in another fountain?” He cannot help but smirk, it hues to not be so easy to stand toe to toe with his brother, a man who once seemed so much larger. Sure he could still easily toss him over his shoulder if he wished, but Faramir too was not the straggly young teen he once had been. Both with age and height he had grown rather bold.  “You know I’m right, just admit it.”

it was quiet today. more quiet than usual. but silence always felt worse on kyungmi's birthday. she isn't the type to celebrate. in fact, there's not a single friend who knows her birthdate. which is what she prefers. however, she didn't expect her birthday to fall on a day when her schedule is completely clear—no school, no work, no parties. mondays truly suck.
besides the video call with her mother in the morning, she did nothing but eat, sleep, and eat some more. the sun already set, and clouds covered the night sky. she watched the light snowfall—a therapeutic calm. it only lasted a moment until kyungmi got bored. " alright, enough of this. " she mumbles to herself while grabbing the necessities before leaving her apartment. she deserves a drink for surviving another year, but going alone will put the icing on the cake of ‘loneliness’.
there's only a couple of people she has the power to drag along with little-to-no complaint, theo being one. which also happens to be the first and favourite choice. a broad smile tore her lips, banging on his front door. " it's the police. open up. "

Okay so not to make everything hurt but, Elrond hiding Aragorn's parentage to protect him from Sauron the way Gil-Galad's parentage was hidden to protect him from Sauron... After Gil-Galad died by Sauron's hand... is going to be giving him lots of very juicy emotions.
How many times did he watch little baby Estel and wonder if it would be enough. If Gil-Galad's parentage being hidden couldn't protect him in the end, what true hope was there for Aragorn's parentage being hidden could protect him?
Because even that layer of protection didn't stop Gil-Galad from going up against Sauron. And he has enough foresight to know that extra layer of protection is also not going to stop Aragorn from going up against Sauron.
How many times did he hope that protection would work this time. How many times did he hope that he would not see the end of his brother's line, no matter how hard he fought to preserve it. How much did it pain him to reveal to Aragorn who he truly was, because telling him that would feel like the first step towards a doom that he could not control anymore than he was able to control Gil-Galad's doom.
No, no, that's exactly where my mind was going with that! While Elrond has many tragedies to play "Worst case scenario this will happen again" with, I think the connection to Gil-galad would be really on the forefront of his mind.
But at the same time... Here is the thing: Celebrian faced unspeakable horrors while doing her best to stay out of trouble, while Elrond has survived several senseless tragedies even though he's been on battlefield more times than he can easily count. There is really no controlling who gets hurt when and how, and he knows that better than most.
And Gilraen's own husband has died, and yet she is willing to give up her Estel that men might have hope. How could Elrond do anything less than that? And hey, Elladan and Elrohir are constantly leaving the protection of Imladris to go fight the ever-growing Shadow. It's not like he loves Estel more dearly than he loves his twins. Even Arwen, who is no warrior, still travels, though she faces the same risks as Celebrian.
And yet.
I highly doubt that all the wisdom and the logic in the world really help put Elrond at ease. I think all it does is add one more constant source of anxiety and pride to the back of his mind. Like Thranduil who must fear that the evil of Dol Guldur will ultimately claim the life of his son like it did of his father, I'm sure Elrond really struggles with his inability to protect his children from the need to take up arms to protect from Sauron those who are even more helpless. Insert here parallels to Denethor and Boromir, and Theoden and Theodred.
Listen, LotR is only less painful than the Silm because it covers a shorter period of time, but if you start pulling on threads, it's full of angst

so i am back on the grima train and i was reading through your posts (absolutely quality, for which i can only thank you !! 💓) and you mentioned in one about his use of magic that you have a Lot of Feelings about grima in relation to gender and plz i need to hear them!! (if you want to share? 👀)
LOTR: Grima & Gender
Oh man, so Grima and gender. My favourite topic. Other than Grima and magic - but they’re linked! So, that’s a bonus for us.
I want to thank you so much for asking this question. I have wanted to rant about this for Forever.
This became incredibly long, but the long and short of it is that Grima undermines social expectations of masculinity in Rohan through his disdain for martial achievements, his occupying a more private/passive role within the king’s household rather than the expected “masculine” public/active, his use of spells and potions being an “unmanly” and “cowardly” approach to problem solving, and his reliance on language and soft-power approaches to politics.
All of this works to position Grima within a more feminine role and character - at least within the context of Rohan’s hypermasculine performativity of manliness.
[It does allow us to read Grima as trans with greater ease in terms of fitting into the canon than the usual favourites, other than Eowyn. So, you know, do with that what you will. Eowyn and Grima both want to be queen. Let them be in charge! I’m going to get my ass bit for this.]
-
Grima’s gender performance needs to be quickly situated within the broader context of masculinity in Middle-Earth. Gondor’s ideal of masculinity is the gentler masculinity that everyone focuses on when they talk about men in middle earth being good models of what masculinity can look like. It’s a nurturing masculinity, it’s gentle, it’s healing-focused. Aragorn and others try and take the first off-ramp from violence or conflict whenever they can. There is no enjoyment in warfare or soldiering. It’s done because it’s necessary. Dick-swinging is limited to non-existent etc.
Rohan is different.
Faramir touches on this when he speaks to Frodo of how Boromir was more like the men of Rohan and how he thought that wasn’t a good thing as it meant he was seeking glory for glory’s sake, relishing war and soldiering as an occupation rather than an unfortunate necessity.
Of course, Faramir was also making (some very dubious) racial commentary, but race and gender are often bound up together (e.g. hyper-masculinization of black men and the feminization of East Asian men in the North America).
As R.W. Connell says, “masculinities are congurations of practice that are constructed, unfold, and change through time” — and, additionally, masculinity must be defined in opposition to femininity but, also, other masculinities.
For Rohan, there is a strong, militarized hyper-masculinity that threads through their culture. One of the reasons Theoden was seen as a failing king was his physical decline and inability to continue being a physically strong king. His aging emasculated him, more so when compared to Theodred and Eomer. (Something Theoden believed of himself and Grima capitalized on.)
For this, I’m going to speak of masculinity of the upper classes, since that’s what we see for Rohan. Masculinity, and how it’s to be performed, is contingent on social variables such as, but not limited to: age, appearance and size, bodily facility, care, economic class, ethnicity, fatherhood, relations to biological reproduction, leisure, martial and kinship status, occupation, sexuality etc. and as we never see lower class Rohirrim men it’s impossible to say what the “acceptable” and “expected” forms for a farmer or cooper would be.
Upper class men of Rohan are expected to be militarily capable - ready to ride and fight when called by their king or marshal. They are to be men of action over word, and when language is in play, it’s to be forthright and plain. No riddling. Marriage/Husband-ing is an expected part of manhood. Being strong minded, and capable of taking charge and making decisions is important. Fatherhood is also clearly prized, especially fatherhood that results in son(s).
(Theoden only having one child could be read as another “failure” in living up to Rohirrim ideals when compared to the older kings of his family who were far more prolific.)
The appearance of an “ideal” man is tall, fair, and handsome. Physically strong and capable in all ways (martially, sexually, fertile etc.).
Men should be able to demonstrate that they are capable of being in charge, taking control, defending and protecting families and homes. This slots in with more generalized expectations around bravery, honour and glory.
[Eomer: And that, in summation, is how you are to Be A Man.
Grima: Well that sounds utterly exhausting.]
-
So, with all of that in mind, let’s talk Grima.
First, let’s address the name and character construction as this is the least bound up in how he acts and its tension with Rohirrim ideals of Being a Man. It’s also interesting in that it can give a glimpse into Tolkien and the possible thoughts he had when constructing Grima.
Grima’s Name & Beowulf Stuff
Grima’s name is from old Icelandic Grimr, which is a name Odin takes during the Grimnismal saga.
Here are some lines from Odin in the saga:
I have called myself Grim,
I have called myself Wanderer,
Warrior and Helmet-Wearer,
[...]
Evildoer, Spellcaster,
Masked and Shadowed-Face,
Fool and Wise Man,
[...]
Rope-Rider and Hanged-God.
I have never been known
by just one name
since I first walked among men.
Not only is Grima’s name from Odin, more importantly, it’s the feminine version of that name. No man in the eddas or sagas goes by Grima. Only women. And most often they were seidr-workers or healers/magic practitioners of some kind.
"Other healers include Gríma from Fóstbræðra saga and Laxdæla saga and Heiðr from Biarmiland in Harald’s saga Hárfagra."
- “Hostile Magic in the Icelandic Sagas,” Hilda Ellis-Davidson
And
"There was a man called Kotkel, who had only recently arrived in Iceland. His wife was called Grima. Their sons were Hallbjorn Sleekstone-Eye and Stigandi. These people had come from the Hebrides. They were all extremely skilled in witchcraft and were great sorcerers."
- Laxdæla saga
This is most likely something Tolkien was aware of — I would be flabbergasted if he wasn’t. However, did he fully appreciate the implications in terms of gender and subversion of masculinity? Impossible to say, of course, but he certainly knew he was giving his male character a name that has only been used by women in historical texts.
It would be akin to naming your male character Henrietta instead of Henry. It’s a deliberate, explicit decision. And while I don’t think Tolkien expected most readers to track down the origin of Grima’s name, the --a ending, to most anglophone readers, signifies a feminine name, more often than not. At least, it rarely, if ever, signifies masculine.
So the name alone brings in, at a subconscious level to readers, feminine qualities.
Alongside this, Grima is loosely based on Unferth from Beowulf. The entrance of Gandalf et al into Meduseld directly mirrors Beowulf’s into Hrothgar’s hall (complete with Grima lounging at Theoden’s feet the same as Unferth at Hrothgar’s). Indeed, it was clearly Tolkien’s intention to make a call back to Beowulf with that scene. (He was being all “look how clever I am. Also these are Anglo-Saxons on horses. As a general fyi”).
Unferth is a fascinating character in his own right ,and there is much scholarly debate around his role within Hrothgar’s hall, as well as the text more broadly. While there isn’t enough time/space to get into Unferth, I will quickly note that he is another character who subverts his society’s ideas of manhood and masculinity — particularly with regards to expectations of heroism and bravery. Yet, at the same time, Unferth is noted for being very intelligent, cunning, good at riddling, and overall quick witted (also, a kin-slayer. Dude murdered his brothers for Reasons).
Unferth’s contrary behaviour that flies in the face of Anglo-Saxon norms and ideals of masculine bravery is clearly reflected in Grima. Particularly in Grima’s fear of battle and lack of interest in taking up his sword when called by his king.
This leaves us with a character who was given a woman’s name and who is loosely based on another character who is known for his inability to follow through on his society’s expectations for masculine behaviour.
Grima, from the first moment we meet him, clearly reads more feminine than masculine - this is amplified when he’s contrasted with the likes of Theoden and Eomer. And, not only is his aligned with traditional femininity more than other male characters, he is specifically aligned with the more negative tropes of femininity (i.e. lack of bravery, unreliable, dubious morals etc.).
-
That is a brief overview of the bones of Grima’s construction: name and inspiration. Now for actions and characterization within the text. This will be subdivided into comments on his use of magic and how that interfaces with Rohirrim masculinity then we’ll get into power and language.
Grima’s key point of power is his ability to weave words in so powerful a way he could convince Theoden of his own infirmity and weakness thereby securing control over the king. Alongside this, we know that he was using certain “potions and poison” to further weaken Theoden. Most likely to amp up the king’s physical weakness so it coincided with Grima’s mental magic games.
Magic for Anglo-Saxon and early medieval Scandinavians was heavily rooted in the power of the spoken word. Runes were probably used but the historical support of this is vague. Which is to say, we know they were used, we’re just not certain how and to what extent.
We do know that rune staves were a thing. They were most often used to send your landwights after opponents or wreck havoc on enemies from afar. To make one, a magic-worker would carve the prescribed runes onto a large stave and position it in the ground facing the direction of their enemy. On top of the stave was added the head of a horse. (Lots of horse sacrifice happened for early medieval Scandinavians, alongside some human sacrifice.)
But, the brunt of magic for Anglo-Saxons and early medieval Scandinavians was spoken word. Which makes sense as their society was, like Rohan’s, predominantly illiterate or, at least, para-literate (though, there has been some recent archeological evidence that is starting to call that into question, for what that’s worth).
In particular, Grima’s spellwork aligns most closely with seidr, a fact I’ve gone about ad nausea. And, again, something we can assume Tolkien was aware of, which means he was also aware of the gendered implications of a man practicing the craft.
The mainstay of seidrcraft is, but not limited to, the following:
making illusions,
causing madness and/or forgetfulness,
brewing of potions and poisons,
prophesying,
channeling the dead,
channeling gods,
removal of elf-shot, and
recovering lost portions of someone’s soul.
The first three bullets are things Grima does to Theoden. That kind of magic — the kind that fucks with your mind and your sense of self, the kind that is subtle and quiet and lurks beneath the surface so you don’t know it’s happening, that’s cunning — that kind of magic is what women do.
It was considered unmanly/effeminate for a man to partake in it as it undermined the hypermasculine militarized culture of the time. Winning a battle or a fight through spells and poison was cowardly.
Therefore, in Rohan where we have this hypermasculine culture that so prizes military glory and grandeur and martial might, Grima pursuing his goals through spellcraft and potions/poisons is Grima pursuing distinctly unmasculine, effeminate modes of action.
Indeed, within Rohan it could call into question the entirety of his masculinity. It would make him ragr (adj. unmanly) because his actions are the epitome of ergi (noun. unmanliness).
"In the Viking Age, homosexual men were treated with extreme disdain and a complex kind of moral horror, especially those who allowed themselves to be penetrated. Such a man was ragr, not only homosexual by inclination and action, but also inhabiting a state of being that extended to ethical and social qualities. This complex of concepts has been extensively studied, and in the words of its leading scholar, "the unmanly man is everything that a man should not be with regard to morals and character. He is effeminate and he is a coward, and consequently devoid of honour". [...] What we would call sexual orientation was, in the viking age, completely bound up with much wider and deeper codes of behaviour and dignity, extending way beyond physical and emotional preference." -Neil Price, Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings
Though Price references specifically homosexuality in this passage, a man could be considered ragr for more than just that — and one of the other ways was through practicing seidr.
We see this with Odin, who learns how to do seidrcraft from Freyja, and is then mocked by Loki for how emasculating the practice is for Odin to undertake (as if Loki has any room to talk). Odin’s made himself effeminate, he’s made himself unmanly, he’s allowed himself to learn spells that could enable him to take a cowards way out of a situation, to be dishonourable etc.
Which is a neat tie-back to Grima’s name being one of Odin’s names, particularly when he is in disguise and using seidrcraft and wily ways to escape various unfortunate situations that he ends up in during the Grimnismal saga.
(As Odin says: I have been called Evildoer, Spellcaster, Masked and Shadowed-Face, Fool and Wise Man.)
It also mirrors him to Gandalf - another character who bears an Odinnic name. Gandalf very much represents the masculine, “acceptable” aspects of Odin. Grima embodies the darker, more dubious, and more effeminate, aspects of the god. As I’ve said in other posts, they are two sides of the Odin coin.
Though both are temperamental as fuck.
-
Alongside the spellcraft and potions, Grima’s performance of power does not align with Rohirrim traditions and ideals. He relies on his wits and his skill with language to navigate the world. Succinctly captured in the epithet bestowed upon him: Wormtongue. This is the modernization of Wyrmtunga, or, Dragon’s Tongue.
Wyrm can translate to worm, sure, and we see Saruman doing this on purpose when he refers to Grima as a worm, a creature that crawls in the dirt. But Wyrm, of course, is actually a form of dragon. And in Middle Earth, wyrm is used interchangeably with dragon (Smaug is called both wyrm and dragon), rather than denoting a specific species/categorization of dragon as it does in our world.
Grima’s approach to power is that of a gentle touch. He speaks softly, but doesn’t carry a large stick. He’s not Eomer or Theodred, who are much more traditionally martial, aggressive and forthright in their responses to a situation. Grima is clearly all about influencing those around him either through persuasion/use of words, or through spellcraft. He manipulates, he uses linguistic trickery.
-
Additionally, how he undertakes his role as advisor to the king places him more within the private world of Meduseld and the king’s household than the active, public world of marshals and thanes. And, of course, the private world of households was traditionally considered the woman’s domain while men were expected to occupy the public spaces of the world.
Of course, being involved in court politics is a public role as opposed to existing within a wholly private space (such as Eowyn. Who, in the books, takes a mostly private role until she is required to rule in her uncle’s stead while he and Eomer are off at war, and even then it is clearly considered a temporary situation and part of her duty as a woman). But the manner in which Grima occupies that public position is a more “feminine” one.
We can assume that if Eomer or Erkenbrand or Elfhelm occupied the role as advisor to Theoden, they would have a very different approach to the position. A much more aggressive, active and probably military-focused approach. Less carrot, more stick.
A quick note on his appearance in the film, aside from being entirely in black with black hair in a land full of blonds because he needed to be visually distinct as the Bad Guy. He is dressed in longer tunics and robes compared to Eomer and other Rohirrim men (aside from Theoden, but as soon as he is “healed” of his possession(?) he returns to the Proper Masculine shorter tunics than the Weak and Effeminate longer robes and tunics of before). Grima’s hair is longer than Eomer’s and Theoden’s, he wears only a dagger and not a sword, the furs and quilting of his clothes indicate wealth and status, of course, but also decadence and effeminacy.
-
All in all, Grima’s performance and actions undermine and subvert Rohirrim expectations of masculinity. If not outright transgressing gender norms. He uses spellcraft to achieve his ends which is cowardly and effeminate. When it’s not that, he relies on language and manipulation to ensure his position and rarely, if ever, willingly takes on an active, martial role that would be expected of a man who is in the king’s household and serves as an advisor and a quasi-second-in-command.
Here is a man, occupying a man’s role, but doing it like a woman. Subversive! Scandalous! Underappreciated by fandom!
Grima lives in a liminal, marginalized space that is at once gendered and ungendered but is absolutely Othered.
-
As for my note on Grima and being trans - absolutely a trans woman. Grima suffers from that thing of “I want to be you and sleep with you” re: Eowyn. That’s my hot take. (Similar to me and Alan Grant from Jurassic Park - I want to be him and sleep with him.)
But no, in all seriousness, a strong argument can absolutely be made for Grima being not-cis, however that might look for Grima. Grima and Eowyn are the two, within the trilogies, that have the strongest arguments to be made for not being cis.
(Grima is a bit of a foil for Eowyn, I think, while also being a foil for Gandalf.)

"&" Eowyn and Theodred 🥹 -✧- @pxnxply
Théodred was sitting on the ground looking out over the plains of The Mark, from one of the highest places in Edoras. He had been out of doors, spending time with his younger cousins, laughing and talking.
But at one point, his mind wandered and was only brought back by Éowyn tracing a scar on his forearm. He twitched, startled by the action, and turned to look at her. He calmed immediately, not wanting to scare her, and sighed.
"I am fine," he assured her, response said as though he had done so a thousand times before. Thinking of his various scars made flashes of battle and war appear before him. However, he smiled warmly at his cousin, near twenty years his younger. "I can tell you a story about that one."

Note
I’m sorry if you’ve answered this somewhere else, but does Denethor know what his eldest is getting up to with Theodred?
And if Denethor doesn’t know, how would he react to finding out, please?
This depends upon a few things! In general I tend to go for the canon that Boromir doesn’t tell his father because he sees no reason too and Denethor doesn’t find out. Boromir and Denethor have a very paired down relationship, it revolves quite necessarily around their duties and whilst they’re both warmly dedicated too them, Boromir wouldn’t tell Denethor something if it didn’t seem necessary. There’s other stuff to it, Boromir’s generally very private, he struggles in putting himself in vulnerable positions where he’s making something ABOUT him, he doesn’t know his dad’s reaction for certain and JUST the conversation seems like a lot of risk and effort for (in his mind) not much gain.
However! I’ve also pondered a situation where Boromir as a younger and ‘still figuring it out’ 18 year old gets close to being outed. It doesn’t come to anything and he sorts it out on his own without too much fuss, but the incident makes it clear that he might not be in control of this at all times. AND if he were to be outed it would effect his ability to do his job. Which is something he SHOULD tell his dad about.
So the conversation is very much geared as a ‘report’, after dinner one night Boromir just says ‘I actually have something else to discuss with you, if you have time tonight. Not a pressing matter but it could be important.’ And that is very normal for Boromir to say, and Denethor nods and takes him back to his office, and he asks with a little humour  "so, is this more work for you or for me?" and Boromir laughs and Denethor actually does not know anything is amiss until Boromir pauses after saying ‘I will hope it is just for me, but at the risk it comes to your desk... ‘
And Boromir just! Says ‘I am ill-fated.’ which irritates him because whilst queer communities have other names for themselves, those terms are not universally known, especially not to the general populace, so ‘ill-fated’ is all he has to describe it. And it’s not just derogatory, it’s also unspecific! Other things are called ill-fated, it is not a queer specific term. So Boromir has to clarify ‘in the ‘he is lead to the river’ sense, I have not been formally cursed.’
And well Boromir has to distance himself from this moment, it’s a discussion about his duties, it’s not about him, this is not vulnerable. Meanwhile Denethor (a person who only calls himself a man out of necessity not desire or comfort), with his calm and impassive expression, is wrestling down a vicious surge of protective fervour alongside 30 years of queer liberation theory. There are approximately 200 things Denethor wants to say to Boromir, but by this time he knows Boromir’s implicit request has always been to be distant. Denethor’s emotions are too heavy for his son to bear alongside the weight of duty he also carries, and Denethor has respected this need in Boromir. The absolute last thing Boromir would want is to feel like Denethor needs to protect him, that is entirely antithetical to his responsibilities.
SO Denethor swallows down the ‘that’s my boy, that’s my son’ and the worry and the empathy and everything else, pauses a moment to try and thread the needle here, and in the end he just acknowledges what Boromir has told him, and why. ‘you tell me this as warden, as my heir, and you are wise to do so, for unfortunately, there are those who would use this to sow trouble that goes beyond you or I’ And Boromir is immediately relieved. Because that held all the information he wished to know inside it, without too much intensity. Denethor has no issue with him, Boromir’s position is unchanged, Denethor understands the situation and he is content.
Boromir says ‘Trouble enough! I am well experienced in navigating it but I am not as blessed as Faramir and luck has toyed with me from time to time.’ and he pauses and then says, ‘I should perhaps not engage with it at all. Which I would do, if you concurred.’ And it's been hard! He's felt guilt during this exploratory phase, he never meant to make a community, he never meant to actually be invested, he needed to know the ‘issue’ enough within himself to control it. But now he's understood by a group! He has a community and he doesn't want to leave it behind, as much as he knows that would be sensible. And Denethor’s say-so would allow him to cut those ties!
But Denethor’s composure breaks here ever so briefly as he makes this sharp halting motion with his hand. ‘No, no, do not.’ A pause and then, ‘I have every faith in you. And it is always better to have friends than not.’ And truly, it’s never been easier to see relief on his son’s face before! Usually Boromir is unreadable, even to Denethor, but just for this moment it’s almost too clear. Clear enough to see Boromir realise it himself and look uncomfortable about it. A discomfort Denethor knows how to solve, though he resents the remedy, ‘Besides, you are worth more to Gondor a whole man. Splitting yourself into pieces that way would serve no one.’
And Boromir’s smiling! He’s relieved, reassured, settled and back to being confident with this newfound purpose and logic. It WOULD serve no one, and to serve is his ultimate goal and drive. So he is satisfied. And Denethor has to accept, once again, that his son needs his joys to be of service to Gondor to entertain them. Which is gruelling! But exactly what they need! And he wishes again that Boromir were less accepting of his lot, he wishes again that Finduilas was here so that he might tell her this and hear what she would say. IT’S A LOT, but it’s very short! And really like... THATS IT. Everything continues on as it did before, exactly as it did.
UNTIL PERHAPS... hmm... Boromir’s marriage. I think Boromir would have told Denethor about Theodred eventually. But again that joy had to be muted to be expressed and whilst Denethor was happy to hear of it, they both knew there wasn’t much to be done. Denethor welcomed Theodred warmly to Minas Tirith the few times he came and liked him more for knowing he had Boromir’s love and good opinion.
But I DO THINK, for the actual wedding, the weight of tradition and ‘rightness’ would finally outweigh the repression. And Boromir wouldn’t have to ask Denethor to move mountains to figure out a way to properly symbolically welcome Theodred into their family. Which is a big deal!! In Gondor!!! Culturally and socially and practically! And Denethor would do his best to either attend the ceremony or craft some other small meeting. And the silk with Theodred’s blue handprint is kept safe in his desk somewhere, marking the tying of Theodred’s fate with the rivers of life of the House of Hurin.
I GOT... carried away... and a little sleepy towards the end but I hope this is readable I read through it exactly 1 times.

📝 gimme plots for ALL OF EM, erran! (for lothiriel but also for any of my other muses if you'd like, like? just go wild)
Send me a 📝 and I’ll suggest a plot - ACCEPTING for all blogs!
GO WILD Pippa says ajhshak RIGHT THEN!
BOROMIR
- Fuckin, we’ll start off agonisingly self indulgent; what if one of Lothiriel’s daughters was a WHOLE lesbian and she wanted to talk to Boromir about it - I think Boromir and Lothiriel should solve a murder mystery together I think one of the Thanes should be killed and they have to solve it OR OOoo or perhaps Lothiriel herself is recieved poorly by a few in rohan and she’s framed for something in order to get her sent away.   - MASQUERADE! Masquerade in Dol amroth!!! I know we have a festival thread already but!!
THEODRED
- Ok the self indulgent one will be the one at the beginning but perhaps a discussion with Theodred towards the end of his four years of trying to be a good king where he’s realising he’s just driving people apart and perhaps that conversation drives him a little towards realising what he’s gotta do. - Theodred telling Lothiriel absolutely every single embarassing thing Eomer’s ever done.  - Lothiriel finding out??? Theodred writes poetry?? Hijinks ensue!!
SARTE
- Oldest thing meets youngest Amrothian at Aragorn’s wedding and tells her the Rohir she’s pining for (after glimpsing him before he left minas tirith to bury his uncle) looks just like eorl the young did. She gives no further explanation.  - Sarte lists all of Gandalf’s crimes to a girl who’s barely even met him.  - Sarte asks Lothiriel to tell HER a story, this seems unfair  - 7′7 elf casually insults the Prince of Dol Amroth and Lothiriel THROWS HANDS about it

eothiriel and “Is that my shirt?”
He’s just managed to curl himself comfortably around Lothiriel, pressing his nose into her sweet-smelling hair. She gives a contented sigh, likely as pleasantly drowsy and sated as he is–or at least Eomer hopes so.
“Mm,” she hums, “this is nice.”
“Just nice?” Eomer asks, playfully nipping at the shell of her ear.
“Very nice,” Lothiriel corrects.
And it is–this is the first time they’ve dared to stay in the same room during the weird-but-nice family and friends vacation Aragorn and Arwen have put together. No one, except maybe Faramir, who always seems to know everything, suspects that they’re a couple. They both prefer it that way, at least for now.
Though it does, obviously, make the urge to kiss casually or hold hands or do any of the things they normally would when not surrounded by their meddling friends somewhat inconvenient. But right now, in the dark, cool pleasantness of Lothiriel’s room, there’s no need for secrecy. So Eomer presses another sleepy kiss to Lothiriel’s shoulder. She sighs again, threading her fingers through his.
“Good night,” she murmurs, voice gone soft and thick with tiredness.
“Night, sweetheart,” he answers.
Lothiriel’s breathing evens out fairly quickly. Eomer smiles to himself; he’s never known anyone else who can slip into sleep as easily as her.
He’s nearly asleep himself when a sudden beeping erupts from the direction of the kitchen.
No, Eomer thinks, surely not.
It surely is, because the beeping is quickly accompanied by loud–and impressive–cursing in Sindarin. And in Rohirric, in a distinctly familiar, female voice.
“WAKE UP!” Cries Amrothos. “EOWYN’S GONE AND SET THE KITCHEN ON FIRE!”
Groaning, Eomer untangles himself from Lothiriel, who is blinking herself awake, looking adorably confused.
“I think our siblings might have just lost Aragorn the deposit on the house,” he grumbles, pulling on his pajama bottoms and groping around for his grey t-shirt. Lothiriel plucks it off the lamp nearest her with a sheepish grin and passes it over.
“That’s unfortunate,” she agrees, shimmying into her own pajama bottoms and shirt. “Should I go first or…?”
“I don’t think they’ll notice where we’re coming from in the chaos,” Eomer says.
He’s right–every light in the house has been flipped on while they got dressed, and the sound of voices has reached a new, frantic pitch. Aragorn has found the fire extinguisher, it would seem, and he and Boromir have bravely attacked what resembles a formerly frozen pizza, charred to oblivion on a baking tray.
“Oh, Eowyn,” he groans.
“It was not,” his sister hisses, sticking her finger in his face, “me.”
“Oh, yes, blame the man with third degree burns instead,” whines Amrothos, “very chivalrous of you, Eowyn–”
“You have a first degree burn, at worst,” Lothiriel says, inspecting the pink skin of her brother’s hand with exasperation. “And I have no doubt it was you behind this, Am.”
“Betrayed by my own sister!” He cries, dramatic as ever. “How shall I live with the pain?”
“By opening the windows to let some fresh air in,” Theodred suggests, rubbing at his eyes wearily. “Bema above, this was supposed to be a nice, relaxing vacation–”
“What’s a vacation with this lot without trouble?” Boromir asks, slinging an arm around his boyfriend’s shoulders. “Anyways, I think we got the worst of the damage contained.”
“Don’t be so sure about that,” Eomer says. “I haven’t spotted Arwen yet. I’m sure she’ll have something to say about this late night cooking adventure.”
Amrothos pales as the rest of the room chuckles. Eowyn scowls at him, lifting her finger again to jab him in the chest, before blinking–almost comically–in surprise. “Eomer,” she says, slowly, “what on Earth are you wearing?”
It’s Eomer’s turn to blink as eight pairs of eyes turn to him. He looks down, expecting to see the familiar, faded Rohan United lettering of his favorite t-shirt, but instead–
“Is…is that my shirt?” Lothiriel asks in a horrified whisper.
Well, he certainly doesn’t recall buying any crop tops, let alone one that has two middle fingers reading boy, bye on them.
Everyone’s eyes are darting back and forth between them, like some demented game of tennis.
“Why would Eomer being wearing your shirt, Loth?” Boromir asks.
Eomer cycles through a number of excuses: a mix up with laundry, he’d accidentally grabbed the wrong one from one of the beach bags, he’d suddenly acquired a taste for crop tops–
“Oh for–they’re dating,” groans Faramir. “They’ve been dating for months now and doing an admirable job of keeping it from us. Though,” at this, he offers Eomer a truly terrifying smile, “I would love to hear how you were going to explain this away.”
“I–”
“We–”
The room dissolves into chatter–Eowyn is occupied with punching his arm, put out about being kept in the dark, Amrothos is groaning loud enough to rattle the walls about his baby sister not trusting him, while Aragorn, Boromir, and Theodred shuffle a was of bills around, grinning widely.
Arwen appears, suddenly, in the doorway of the hallway. She’s six months pregnant, terrifyingly beautiful even half-awake, and clearly irritated about having to get out of bed.
Aragorn’s smug smirk morphs into a look of guilt rather rapidly. “Ah. We–we solved the problem, melamin, I promise–”
“Good,” she says, softening a little at her husband’s obvious concern, “that means we can all go back to bed.”
Everyone shuffles off rather quickly after that, the ruined pizza banished outside along with most of the burnt smell. Eowyn shoots him a look as they trek down the hall that implies they will be having a very long discussion in the morning. Faramir offers him a wry wink, gently pushing his wife into their room. Lothiriel is still flushed, bright pink, and hides her face away into his chest as soon as he’s shut the door behind them.
“Well, that was mortifying,” she mutters.
Eomer chuckles. “They were going to find out eventually.”
“True,” she agrees, tipping her head back to meet his eyes. Her hands are very, very warm on his lower back and he has to swallow, thickly, when she drags a fingernail along his spine. “And there’s the added bonus of discovering that you look very, very good in a crop top–”
Eomer’s not sure he agrees, but can’t bring himself to mind that she thinks so, really.
(“This is going to become a thing, isn’t it,” Amrothos says grumpily on the beach next day.
“Oh, I do hope so,” Lothiriel says, her hand in Eomer’s and one shoulder bared by the over-large neck of his Rohan United shirt.
“I hope you get terrible tan lines,” he informs Eomer.
Eomer shrugs, pressing a kiss to the back of Lothiriel’s hand and settling more comfortably into the sand. If nothing else, a crop top was proving to provide cover for the evidence of Lothiriel’s…enthusiastic appreciation for it on his shoulders.)

About Beleg
Beleg Cuthalion is a Sinda that serves as Thingol’s chief marchwarden.
He’s quick to battle and doesn’t plan ahead. Beleg has been in several large battles and as such he is powerful and resourceful. He is quick to make his choices and more resilient than many, even for elves. He has a single-mindedness and a vast amount of loyalty to those he considers worthy of it.
For all his brash action and eager arguments he is also very sweet and nurturing, having never lost a childlike curiosity of the world. Due to being at Túrin’s side over the years he’s grown more used to the ways of Men, appreciating physical affection in any form.
Beleg loves downtime and would rather only use his weapons for hunting dinner. He goofs around a lot and finds skills that make others laugh are just as important as those that win battles.
Obviously Beleg dies in his story at the hands of Túrin.
My different options when playing him are:
Obviously following canon.
Reborn and scarred from his death.
Heavily injured and survived his death.
If it’s needed to be clarified what version I’m playing as for the plot of a certain rp I’ll mention it in the tags.

"Uh my Prince? Lord Éomer is asking for you to come to the throne room. There's a visitor you might want to see and Grima's squawking protests about him." (Theodred & Rowan (Elrohir)) -✧- @amid-ice-and-snow
Théodred looked up from where he was repairing some tack in the royal stables, as this was a place where he could gather his thoughts. This he often had to do in these times, and in these short visits back to Edoras. He sighed at the young messenger but nodded and thanked him. He got up and headed to the throne room, commotion growing as he neared.
Sure enough, when he arrived, there was Gríma, turning about and squawking his protests, while the King seemed perturbed but did nothing to stop him. It pained Théodred to see his father so changed, so weak, and it only grew worse as time went on. He turned away from the sight and walked up to Gríma, raising his hand. Little respect did he hold for or show to him.
"Silence, Gríma! How can Théoden King possibly make out the situation with your nonsensical raving? What has happened? Tell your King, and your prince also," he said firmly, glowering down at him.
He glanced then at the figure standing nearby, the one Gríma had been yelling about. A stranger; an elf. Though, the prince had never seen one to appear so bedraggled, bruised, and broken. Something dreadful had evidently happened to them. Deep concern was shown in Théodred's countenance.
