Hey sorry idk if you'd know this but I quite literally don't know where to turn about this so I'm sending this ask to every queer+catholic blog I can find
Are there *any* resources out there for queer/trans Catholics that go beyond affirmation and show how to pursue a religious life that goes beyond the laity (e.g. priesthood, joining a convent/monastery, something similar) without having to brush your queerness aside. I feel like if I don't find something soon I might go insane
years ago, i attended a Zoom event with Fr. James Alison as a keynote speaker, and something he said has been glued to my brain ever since. he said it in Spanish, so i'll try to remember, paraphrase and translate: "while they try to get us to stop being queer, what we must try to do is to be better queers."
i love what you said about "beyond affirmation" and that is precisely why i got reminded of the quote and WHY this quote resonated with me to begin with.
imho, there is a fundamental issue with a lot of queer theology and it's that it doesn't go beyond apologetics. it's not pragmatic nor does it seem to engage critically with the material conditions that work with or against queerness. and it's truly such a shame, because living "religiously" to me, as a queer catholic, it's infinitely more a matter of coherence, love, devotion and solidarity, than learning how to "reconcile" gayness/transness with the Bible.
it's a journey, of course. the apologetics were and are necessary for many of us to unlearn the hatred that might've been instilled in us through religious education and upbringing. however, here are some resources that, in my opinion, show how to pursue queer-religious-life.
💌 catholic/christian resources:
[book] The Reckless Way of Love: Notes on Following Jesus by Dorothy Day. Unlike larger collections and biographies, which cover her radical views, exceptional deeds, and amazing life story, this book focuses on a more personal dimension of her life: Where did she receive strength to stay true to her God-given calling despite her own doubts and inadequacies and the demands of an activist life? What was the unquenchable wellspring of her deep faith and her love for humanity?
[book & account] Black Liturgies: Prayers, Poems, and Meditations for Staying Human by Cole Arthur Riley. Black Liturgies is a digital project that connects spiritual practice with Black emotion, Black memory, and the Black body. In this book, she brings together hundreds of new prayers, along with letters, poems, meditation questions, breath practices, scriptures, and the writings of Black literary ancestors to offer forty-three liturgies that can be practiced individually or as a community.
[book] Cry of the Earth, Cry of the Poor by Leonardo Boff. Focusing on the threated Amazon of his native Brazil, Boff traces the economic and metaphysical ties that bind the fate of the rain forests with the fate of the indigenous peoples and the poor of the land. He shows how liberation theology must join with ecology in reclaiming the dignity of the earth and our sense of a common community, part of God's creation. To illustrate the possibilities, Boff turns to resources in Christian spirituality both ancient and modern, from the vision of St. Francis of Assisi to cosmic christology.
[book] Undoing Theology: Life Stories from Non-normative Christians by Chris Greenough. The fundamental issue with ‘queer’ research is it cannot exist in any definable form, as the purpose of queer is to disrupt and disturb. Undoing Doing generates a process of ‘undoing’ as central to queer research enquiries. Aiming to engage in a process which breaks free from traditional academic norms, the text explores three life stories
[podcast] The Magnificast. "A weekly podcast about Christianity and leftist politics. The Magnificast is hosted by Dean Dettloff and Matt Bernico. Each week's episode focuses on a unique or under-realized aspect of territory between Christianity and politics that no one taught you about in sunday school."
💌 non-christian but still excellent resources:
[book] Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H. A memoir by a butch hijabi that follows the experiences of the author through stories and figures from the Qur'an.
[book] Lean on Me: A Politics of Radical Care by Lynne Segal. Questions of care, intimacy, education, meaningful work, and social engagement lie at the core of our ability to understand the world and its possibilities for human flourishing. In Lean On Me feminist thinker Lynne Segal goes in search of hope in her own life and in the world around her. She finds it entwined in our intimate commitments to each other and our shared collective endeavours.
i don't think these are precisely what you were looking for. but i hope these resources bring you as much peace and hope as they have brought me.

Language learning – Introductory tips for self taught beginners
Warning, this is a loooong read. Feel free to skip to the TL;DR at the end.
In this post, I will detail a few tips which have helped me (a self taught language hobbyist) with the beginning steps of learning languages such as English, Korean and Japanese. This is not a guide on how to achieve fluency quickly, it is meant to be an introduction to language learning. This is also based on my own experiences; feel free to disagree or correct me.
We will go over these points:
How do I start learning a language?
What should I use? Is an app better than online courses?
Do I learn grammar or vocabulary first?
How much should I study?
Should I practice immersion?
Where do I find resources/books?
I feel frustrated. / I am not learning anything. /This is too hard, maybe it's not for me.
How do I start learning a language?
This is the first thing you will ask yourself when you decide you want to start learning a language. Whether it is for work, for studying, traveling or just for fun, most people feel overwhelmed at the thought of how or where to start.
The truth is that there is no set path to start learning a language, but researching the language before studying can help relieve your worries over it and give you an idea of how to start. Keep in mind that languages which have different alphabets/writing systems (i.e. Japanese, Chinese, Arabic) take longer for a native Germanic/Romance language speaker (i.e. English, French) to learn and achieve fluency, and vice versa, so if you do not have a second language as of yet, consider choosing a Germanic/Romance language as a soft start. I'll detail a suggestion as to where to start in point 3.
What should I use? Is an app better than language courses?
The current language learning app ecosystem is a far cry from what it used to be (yes, I'm talking about Duolingo and Memrise), but they are still your main allies if you have a busy schedule and want to learn a language. However what I've found is that simply tapping away in an app and taking notes isn't enough – sometimes the apps don't explain certain grammar rules, or they're locked behind monthly paywalls. As such, you have to find the answers elsewhere.
Here are some things which will make your life and your studying much easier if you are self taught and on a budget: books on the language (for grammar, you can find PDFs online), language channels (for more thorough and practical explanations, YouTube is the main hub for it), and regular media in the language of your choosing (for vocabulary, it can range from music to series/movies). If you have a friend who speaks the language, or perhaps is learning it with you, that also works. In my opinion, learning is better when you have other people to share it with.
There are also websites such as japanesetest4you.com which compile words and their meanings, just like a dictionary. The one I've mentioned not only displays kanji and its meanings, but also shows its variants in Korean and Chinese. There are many others in this same vein for other languages.
Do I learn grammar or vocabulary first?
When learning a language, most courses and classes will focus on teaching you the grammar and the writing system, which while helpful, can sometimes feel like you are going nowhere, as you know how to build a sentence, but don't have words to form it with, or can't pronounce it correctly. This is a common problem among beginners (and sometimes even more experienced language learners), don't let it discourage you.
A personal example I like to use is: To say "the sky is blue", you have to first learn what the sky is, then learn the color blue, and then learn the structure to be able to say "the sky is blue". Vocabulary is just as important as learning the grammar rules in any language; don't limit yourself to only learning how to write. So the answer is: Build a small vocabulary, learn the grammar, and then apply it in practice. It doesn't have to be correct on the first try, we've all been there. Though people learn in different ways, so perhaps you might feel like the opposite works for you. That's also completely fine.
This is another point where engaging with the language's culture and media outside of classes comes to play. Even watching a TV program during your free time and writing down words is enough, since you're also practicing listening, which is also very important and looked over. Try incorporating pronunciation and listening into your studying routines.
How much should I study?
This is a point of much debate within language learning spaces because there is no answer for it. Some might learn a language in 3 months, others might learn it in 10 years, a few can learn it in 3 weeks. It depends on what language you've chosen and the time you are able to dedicate to the language.
The best tip I can give is: if you can dedicate even just 10-15 minutes of learning each day, you can achieve the results you desire. Of course, you should increase that amount if you're able to in the future, but it's already an effort.
Consider your schedule and refer back to the first point, as the time you'll take to achieve conversational/fluency levels can vary depending on the language you choose.
Should I practice immersion?
The common view of immersion is: "speak the language at every opportunity, only engage with media in that language, and write only in that language". This is what you'll see in some of those "I learned (language) in only 3 months" videos.
Let's be realistic though, no one can start speaking German at all times when they live in the US, or Spanish when they live in France, and you'll only feel more frustrated if you force yourself to watch k-dramas without subtitles and nothing else, expecting to absorb it through osmosis. And also, you only now started learning how to say "the sky is blue".
Immersion comes in many forms, though. If you listen to a song in the language you want to learn and read the lyrics while listening, that counts as immersion. If you write a few phrases describing your day in that language as a dynamic exercise, it also counts as immersion. Immersion is what says on the tin – immersing yourself in the language – but it shouldn't bring you unnecessary stress. Also, contrary to what some might say, I do recommend you use translators, if it helps you associate words with their meanings. Don't just rely on them, though, since Google Translate can be unreliable with certain translations and meanings.
Where do I find resources/books?
This requires digging around, but I recommend you check sites like as WebArchive and YouTube. If you can, buy the books online, or borrow some from your local library. I recommend looking for actual textbooks, mainly because some of them include tidbits about the culture itself, like Genki. If you're on a budget, Reddit has a few threads which recommend apps/books, but be very careful with downloading things from random Google Drives or other file hosting websites.
Tumblr is also a very good place for learning new vocabulary. I see some blogs dedicated to sharing kanji and grammar rules, and it can be good to follow such blogs to build your vocabulary.
I feel frustrated. / I'm not learning anything! / This is too hard, maybe this is not for me.
Rome wasn't built in one day, and you definitely won't learn a language in a month or two if you are someone who is in school or has a job with long working hours. YouTube has made language learning easy, but it also has given the illusion that if you follow X method or study an N number of hours, you'll achieve fluency. That is not the case. It fails to take into account the nature of the language, its grammar rules, the writing systems, and everything else.
You don't realize this, but you definitely didn't learn how to speak in just 3 months when you were a child. Everyone learns differently, some faster than others, some slower, some have more time to study, others don't. Some people have difficulty concentrating and don't know how to make learning more fun. All I can say is: don't give up. As long as you put in some effort, even if it seems insignificant to you, you can achieve your results.
Don't feel obligated to continue learning a language if it is bothering you, though. Remember you can always take a break and come back to it another time. Who knows, maybe even during that break, you'll still be learning new words, and feel more motivated to go back.
TL;DR: Language learning is something which is more accessible now than ever, but you might find yourself confused on where or even how to begin learning a language. The key tip for learning any language is to do research, gather resources, know your own limits and how much dedication, time and energy you can invest into learning, and most important of all, to have fun with it.
I hope this can help some beginners in their journey into language learning. Thank you for reading this far!

hello i have a question about learning korean ^^
i started ( self ) studying it about two years ago but discontinued due to college and all, but now i want to pick it up again and i don't know where to start from? i know how to read and write, but i have issues reading in one go— basically i lack fluency in reading and i often stutter. is there any way to improve?
secondly, i do know some basic stuff however my vocabulary isn't vast enough. besides, i would like to understand the sentence structure, or how they write phrases and sentences since it's very different from english. i've referred to so many sites but there's always a question— do i work on vocabulary first or sentence / phrasing structure first? or do i study both of them along side?
this sounds like such a mess and it is because i'm so lost ┬┬﹏┬┬ my main goal is to understand korean shows without subtitles and i do pick up a few words and phrases here and there but there's a lot still left to learn and idk where to start from. moreover, i've noticed that the textbook korean and the one that's spoken in everyday life is way different ( this applies to almost all the languages tbh ) and i'm having a bit of a trouble trying to figure out how a native would say it?
or example, do this thing where i come up with a sentence and try to translate it just to check what it would be in korean and check in the translator to see if i'm right, and most of the time im not. whether it's about the formalities or the conjugations. basically a whole lot of issues so please if u can help >︿<
Hello! If your goal is to be able to understand Korean content without subtitles, then I think self-studying grammar and vocabulary is a good idea. I know you said you already have some knowledge of Korean, so I would refer to my masterlist and start from wherever you feel appropriate. I also recommend diversifying your study material and looking at other resources on Tumblr, YouTube, and on the Internet elsewhere. There's a lot out there!
As for your second question, I think it makes more sense to study vocab and grammar at the same time. As I've said before in previous asks, I was never that disciplined with my studying, so I can't really give you concrete study techniques. I think I got where I am today by regular exposure (on top of taking Korean courses and studying abroad lol). But if you don't have those opportunities, using whatever resources on the Internet can get you far. As you get comfortable with both grammar and vocab, I recommend exposing yourself to content like webtoons in Korean and K-dramas. These will help you with your reading and listening comprehension. There are plenty of webtoons at varying levels of difficulty, and K-drama actors have clear diction that is easy to understand. Again, I don't exactly have concrete techniques for how to eventually ween yourself off of subtitles/translations (since I myself still use them), but in my experience, exposure alone is enough to at least allow me to read webtoons and watch K-dramas without relying super heavily on the translations. Consuming this content will also teach you how natural Korean is spoken by natives. I hope that makes sense!
If you're concerned about speaking, the best way to get better is to converse with others. You might not know other people who speak Korean, but you can still practice with others for free on Hilokal, where I used to teach live lessons. It's a nice, low-pressure environment that can help you get more comfortable with speaking and learn alongside other people just like you!
Also, I generally don't recommend using translators to help you learn a language, especially if you're an English speaker learning Korean. It's more useful for you to understand the meaning of the Korean itself than it is for you to get the perfect translation. Korean is especially difficult to translate into English (in my opinion), so a translator might not give you a clean, accurate, and natural translation. Unfortunately, I can't think of other ways to fact-check your sentences otherwise lol. But I think that looking at enough sample sentences will help you become better at constructing your own. And something that helped me feel more comfortable writing and speaking when I was abroad is that, even if I make minor mistakes, chances are that other people can still understand me. Maybe keeping that in mind can make the learning process a little less stressful :)
Maybe this advice isn't new for you, but I hope it was still helpful! Thanks for the question and good luck! 화이팅!

Mastering Arabic Writing Skills in the USA

Learning to write in Arabic can seem like a big task, especially if you live in the USA where English is the primary language. But with steady practice and the right approach, it’s definitely possible. Arabic has a unique script that flows from right to left, with letters that change shape depending on where they appear in a word. It’s different from English, but that’s part of what makes it interesting.
First, it helps to understand that the Arabic alphabet has 28 letters. Some of them sound similar to English letters, but others are completely new. For example, the letters ع (Ayn) or خ (Khaa) don’t have an exact match in English, so they can take a little extra time to get used to.
If you want to Learn to Write in Arabic, it’s a good idea to start with the basics. You can begin by practicing each letter on its own. There are plenty of Arabic alphabet charts available online or in bookstores that show you how to form each letter properly. Focus on writing them in different positions: at the beginning, middle, and end of words. This helps you get used to how the letters connect to one another, which is a big part of writing Arabic clearly.
Once you’re comfortable with the alphabet, try copying simple words and short sentences. Even writing your name or basic greetings in Arabic can boost your confidence. Don’t worry if your handwriting isn’t perfect right away—just focus on getting the shapes and connections correct.
Many people in the USA find it helpful to join Arabic language groups or classes, especially at local community centers, cultural organizations, or colleges. Some libraries even offer free resources or workshops for beginners. These can give you a chance to practice with others and ask questions along the way.
Online resources are also a good option. There are apps and websites with exercises that guide you step by step. Some programs include video lessons where you can watch how native speakers form each letter and word. Others give you printable worksheets so you can practice at home.
Consistency matters when learning to write in Arabic. Even writing for 10 minutes a day can make a difference. Over time, you’ll notice your handwriting becoming smoother and more natural.
Another useful tip is to label items around your house with their Arabic names written on sticky notes. It’s a simple way to connect words to objects and keep practicing the script throughout your daily routine.
Arabic is used by millions of people worldwide, and being able to write it opens doors to reading signs, menus, messages, and more, especially if you travel to Arabic-speaking countries or have friends and family who speak the language.
Overall, patience and regular practice are the key ingredients. Take it one step at a time, and you’ll see steady progress in your Arabic writing skills.

What is the IELTS Exam?
The International English Language Testing System, widely known as IELTS, is a standardized exam designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It plays a pivotal role for individuals seeking to study or work in countries where English is the primary language.
IELTS evaluates four key skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each component tests different aspects of communication ability. The exam can be taken in two formats — Academic and General Training — depending on your goals.
With millions of test-takers each year, IELTS has become one of the most recognized qualifications worldwide. Universities and employers often rely on these scores to gauge an applicant’s readiness for academic or professional settings. This makes understanding the format and requirements essential for success in achieving your desired score.
Importance of Quality Study Material for the IELTS Exam
Quality study material is essential for effective IELTS preparation. Choosing the right resources can make a significant difference in your learning experience and outcomes.
First, quality materials provide accurate information about the exam format. They help familiarize you with the structure of each section, from listening to writing. This understanding reduces anxiety on test day.

Time management plays a crucial role during the test. During practice sessions, use a timer to simulate real exam conditions. This will help you learn how to pace yourself effectively.
Focus on your weaknesses. Identify areas where you struggle — be it writing, speaking, or listening — and dedicate extra time to improving those skills.
Engaging in conversations with native speakers can significantly enhance your speaking abilities. Join language exchange groups or find online partners for conversation practice.
Make use of diverse study materials like podcasts and videos that expose you to different accents and vocabulary styles. This variety keeps learning interesting while broadening your comprehension skills.
How to Create a Personalized Study Plan for the IELTS

Next, set realistic goals based on your target band score. Break these down into smaller milestones to track progress effectively. This will keep you motivated and focused throughout your preparation journey.
Allocate specific time slots each week dedicated solely to IELTS practice. Consistency is key; even short daily sessions can be beneficial if done regularly.

Arabic and Quran Classes Online: The Ultimate Guide to Learning at Your Convenience
In today’s interconnected world, the way we learn has drastically evolved. From physical classrooms to virtual learning platforms, the internet has made education more accessible than ever. One of the most notable changes is the rise of Arabic and Quran classes online. Whether you're a beginner eager to learn the basics or someone looking to deepen your understanding of the Arabic language and the Quran, these online classes provide a flexible, convenient, and effective way to achieve your goals.
Learning Arabic and the Quran is not only essential for understanding Islamic teachings but also for fostering a deeper connection to the faith. For many, the challenge lies in finding the right resources, qualified teachers, and classes that fit into their busy schedules. This is where online Arabic and Quran classes become invaluable.
The Benefits of Arabic and Quran Classes Online
Flexibility and Convenience One of the most significant advantages of Arabic and Quran classes online is the flexibility they offer. Gone are the days when you had to adjust your life to fit into a rigid schedule. With online classes, you can choose when and where you want to learn. Whether you're at home, at work, or even traveling, you can access your lessons from any location with an internet connection. This flexibility allows you to learn at your own pace without the pressure of fitting into a traditional classroom setting.
Access to Experienced Teachers When learning a language or studying the Quran, having access to knowledgeable and qualified teachers is essential. With online Arabic and Quran classes, you have the opportunity to learn from experienced Arabic and Quran teachers who are often based in different parts of the world. This allows you to find teachers who specialize in specific areas you may need help with, such as Quranic recitation, Tajweed (pronunciation), or mastering the Arabic language. These teachers bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise, often coming from academic backgrounds or religious institutions. Many teachers are native Arabic speakers, which adds authenticity to your learning experience.
Personalized Learning Experience Online classes provide a unique opportunity for personalized learning. Unlike traditional classrooms, where one teacher must attend to a large group of students, Arabic and Quran classes online often allow for one-on-one sessions. This setup means that the instructor can tailor lessons to your specific needs, whether you're a beginner or looking to advance your skills. Whether you want to focus on Arabic grammar, pronunciation, or mastering Quranic verses, a personalized approach ensures that you progress at your own pace and receive undivided attention from your teacher.
Affordable and Accessible Another major benefit of online learning is that it tends to be more affordable than in-person classes. Traditional Arabic and Quran schools often involve additional costs such as travel expenses and facility fees. Online courses remove these barriers, making learning more accessible to a wider audience. Many online platforms also offer free trials, discounts, or package deals, so you can explore different options without committing large amounts of money upfront.
Arabic and Quran Classes Near Me: Can Online Classes Be an Alternative?
Many people search for Arabic and Quran classes near me when they want to learn locally, either for convenience or because they prefer in-person interaction. While local options can be beneficial, online classes offer numerous advantages, particularly for those with busy schedules or those who don’t have easy access to specialized classes nearby.
Even if there are local options, online classes allow you to bypass the constraints of location. In some areas, it might be difficult to find qualified Arabic and Quran teachers who meet your needs. In such cases, Arabic and Quran classes online open up a world of possibilities, offering you the opportunity to study with teachers from across the globe without being restricted by your geographical location.
Additionally, online platforms often provide a variety of learning resources, such as interactive videos, practice exercises, quizzes, and even group classes, all designed to enhance your learning experience.
How to Choose the Right Arabic and Quran Classes Online
With so many online options available, it’s essential to choose the right platform and teacher for your needs. Here are some factors to consider when selecting Arabic and Quran classes online:
Teacher Qualifications: Ensure that the Arabic and Quran teacher is well-trained, experienced, and knowledgeable. Many platforms display the teacher’s credentials, so take the time to read reviews, check their qualifications, and possibly request a trial lesson to see if the teacher’s teaching style suits your learning preferences.
Course Content: Look for online classes that offer comprehensive and structured course content. Whether you're learning Arabic to understand the Quran or mastering the Arabic language for other purposes, a well-structured curriculum that covers grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, and Quranic studies is essential for effective learning.

How Modern Platforms Are Making It Easier to Learn Languages - Technology Org
Learning a new language has never been more accessible and engaging than it is now in our digitally connected world. Gone are the days of rote memorization from dusty textbooks. By leveraging the power of modern technology, innovative platforms have transformed language learning into a customizable and culturally immersive experience that fits any lifestyle.

From chatting with native speakers to integrating real-life media content, these platforms cater to various preferences and learning styles. They have revolutionized not only how we approach languages but also the ease with which we can embrace them as part of our daily lives.
7 Ways Modern Platforms Make it Easier to Learn Languages
Dive into the evolving world of language acquisition as we explore seven key ways that modern platforms have simplified and enriched the journey of learning a new language.
1. Interactive Learning Tools
Imagine turning the mundane task of language learning into an engaging adventure. This is precisely what interactive learning tools on modern platforms do. They use techniques like gamification to keep you hooked and motivated, making each lesson feel captivating.
You might find yourself in a digital world where conquering levels means mastering conjugations or unlocking new vocabulary. These platforms ensure that the process is not only educational but also entertaining, helping to solidify your retention and make progress feel rewarding.
2. Wider Access to Native-Level Speakers
The internet has revolutionized language learning by connecting you to people from around the world. Many people are able to excel in Spanish with Lingoda and their incredible native-level speakers, for example, because the platform connects learners to teachers from Spain.
This authentic exposure not only improves your pronunciation but also gives you insights into the colloquial expressions, slang phrases, and cultural nuances that textbooks can’t offer. You get the real feel of the language, making your learning journey effective and more enjoyable.
3. Personalized Learning Experience
Step into the world of modern language learning, and you’ll find a space that’s crafted just for you. Personalized learning experiences are at the heart of today’s platforms. They tailor your study plan based on how you learn best, using visual aids, audio tools, or interactive writing.
If a particular grammar rule is giving you trouble, modern platforms are smart enough to offer additional practice in that area until you’ve got it down pat. This custom approach ensures that time spent learning is efficient, catering specifically to your individual learning journey.
4. Improved Cost-Efficiency
In the not-so-distant past, learning a new language could be a significant financial investment. Fast forward to today, and the landscape has changed dramatically with modern platforms offering improved cost-efficiency. You might find yourself accessing a wealth of resources.
These include comprehensive lesson plans, interactive quizzes, and professional tutoring, often at a fraction of the cost of traditional classes or software. If you’re on a tight budget, these platforms allow you to dive into language study without the heavy expense.
5. Mobile-Based Learning
The convenience of mobile-based learning represents a seismic shift in how languages are mastered. It fits seamlessly into your lifestyle, letting you tap into lessons while on the move or during brief pockets of downtime, making consistent practice more accessible than ever before.
Picture yourself polishing your French vocab on the subway or revising Japanese characters as you queue for coffee, all through a few simple swipes on your smartphone. Creating a mobile application is easier than ever, opening up the market for even more flexible learning options.
6. Real-Time Feedback and Corrections
Embrace the power of immediate response with modern language platforms offering real-time feedback and corrections. This dynamic allows you to make adjustments on the spot, fine-tuning your accent, mastering the natural flow of conversation, or correcting subtle grammatical errors.
Such instantaneous critique used to be a luxury reserved for private tutoring, but now it’s an integral feature that helps you learn faster and more effectively. It’s like having an ever-present coach who guides you through every twist and turn of your language-learning journey.
7. Cultural Immersion through Media Integration
Modern language platforms aren’t just about learning to construct sentences. They’re also gateways to cultural immersion. By integrating various forms of media, be it music videos, news articles, or social media snippets, they bring cultural nuances right to your screen.
This approach not only enriches your vocabulary but also deepens your understanding of the context in which words and phrases are used. Suddenly, you’re not just a student of the language but an active participant, picking up on subtleties that traditional textbooks might miss.
In Conclusion…
Embrace the future of language learning and take the leap today. With the innovative tools and resources available at your fingertips, there’s no better time to expand your linguistic horizons.
Choose a platform that resonates with you, set achievable goals, and start on a path that leads to not just fluency but also a deeper connection with cultures around the world. Remember, every word learned is a bridge built toward greater understanding and opportunity.

Introduction: why this blog of all things?

Hello!! Good question, and let me introduce myself. I am a native speaker of english and fluent non-native speaker of Japanese with a passion for Japanese history. It turns out that when I come across something in my historical studies that I find sufficiently upsetting, instead of walking away and going for a walk or something I apparently respond by allowing it premium real estate rent-free in my head and reading about it obsessively in order to find out the why and how of how on Earth it happened, and whether there is anything in that story from which we can learn today.
In this spirit I have been doing fairly extensive reading (I wouldn't say all of it is thorough enough to be called 'research', but you can be the judge of that) around the topic of Unit 731 and its afterlife in historical memory for the past few years in my free time. The peak of rigorous scholarship it may not have been, but by dint of having gone to the end of the Google search results for it in both English and Japanese a few times and read engaged with a decent amount of the literature freely available about it, I think I have a base of information from which to make a vaguely interesting resource for anyone interested in learning more about the topic, especially if they don't speak Japanese.
The exact nature of Unit 731's human experimentation, the death toll, and horrifying accounts of the suffering of the victims is information which is already widely available and discussed in extensive detail across a large number of websites (For anyone looking to move offline, Hal Gold's book Unit 731: Testimony is an excellent place to start for this). As such, that will probably be less of a main focus on this blog, although it will of course come up incidentally. I will assume you know quite a bit about the atrocities already, and so I am more likely to jump straight in to talking about the historiography of Unit 731 and random pieces of information about it that I think are interesting and/or overlooked.
This blog is also likely to have a bias towards information specifically about Ishii Shiro and less about other members of Unit 731 and their roles, although I will of course discuss those where relevant. The reason for this is that one of the things I found fascinating as I went into looking at discussion of Unit 731, both academic and non-academic (of the newspaper feature article, podcast, and Reddit popular opinion category, for example), is the tendency to give an exaggerated and dramatic picture of his life and various episodes therein. I am interested in what motivates historians and popular writers to portray him in this way, and with regards to some episodes from his life I would like to reference some sources that attempt to write the record straight.
This is emphatically not my original research, but a product of reading some less well known sources, especially Kenneth L Port's Deciphering the History of Japanese War Atrocities. This book is absolutely brilliant, revelatory and tightly argued, but is a woefully rare find in libraries, while it is also not available in any ebook format. In fact, reading this book and then seeing facts that Port refutes regularly repeated across many corners of the casual history interest internet was one of the experiences that made me first think seriously about writing some kind of a blog. As such, I would like to write at some length later about various parts of its content, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone making a serious effort to learn about Unit 731 to get their local or university library to order it in.
I don't have a specifically planned post format or update schedule for this, so I am just going to see how it goes. I have AMA turned on, so if by some miracle you find something I write interesting enough to want to engage with me, you can ask me anything I want. For now,
Yoroshiku onegaishimasu
Image: Fields overlooking Kamo Bridge in Shibayama, Chiba, very close to Narita Airport. Kamo was Ishii Shiro's hometown and his family home is believed to have stood close to the site of where this photo was taken. The bridge is one of the only places today that records the name of the village at the time, Kamo 加茂. Photo taken by me when I visited in 2022.

Renshuu - Renshuu is a great app that has a lot to offer for Japanese learners of all skill levels. It can be customized as much as you want and includes many different ways to learn. such as with games, listening, writing, etc. They also have a friendly community and a forum where you can talk with other users! You can add your own mnemonics too, so it's pretty useful. [Paid Premium Version, but you're fine without it]
WaniKani - WaniKani is probably one of the best applications as it helps you learn faster by using spaced repetition and mnemonics methods. However, it is more suitable for Japanese learners in the beginning levels who still don’t know many kanji as you can’t skip to the harder levels. It is also something you have to pay for if you want to go past level 3 (or 4? I don't remember). [Pay for more levels]
Kanshudo - I haven't actually used this one very much? I mostly just use it for taking notes on Kanji as it words things in an easy way for note-taking. It has a lot of features- Flashcards, notes, quizzes, writing practice, tests and plenty of ways to sort terms. [Paid Premium Version]
Jisho - Jisho is as its name says it is- a dictionary! It lets you find words, kanji, example sentences and more quickly and easily. The method relies on ensuring the students have fun and are relaxed to make language practice more enjoyable and therefore more effective." [Paid Gold Member status - allows you to send messages to users rather than just receive them]
Teuida - Teuida offers interactive lessons in both Japanese AND Korean where you actually have to say the things you're learning. [Teiuda is free to use, but you have to unlock lessons with keys that you get every 7(?) hours or buy more keys.]
