Re-reading The Return Of The Native brought so many fond memories back of A Level English Literature which is where I first came across this beautiful novel. Furthermore, I couldn’t believe how much I had actually forgotten, including a narrative which is filled with tragedy and melancholy - this is pretty characteristic of Hardy so I shouldn’t have been too surprised! ⁣ ⁣ This is the story of Eustacia Vye, a strong, independent and determined woman who believes in deep romantic connections and adventure - anything that will take her away from her dreary life in the small community of Egdon Heath. Clym Yeobright, a young man recently returned from Paris seems to be the gentleman who will satisfy her hopes and dreams and they are married. ⁣ ⁣ Unfortunately, things don’t quite work out the way she had hoped and the events that follow affect not only other members of the community (including a former lover and his wife) but her own relationship and future prospects. ⁣ ⁣ Hardy’s talent at describing a countryside setting is second to none but for me, I think I appreciate the way he develops his characters even more, particularly the women. Considering the time he was writing in, his women have strength, power, a mind of their own and a role in society - even if Hardy makes it perfectly clear how diminished that role actually is. ⁣ ⁣ Hardy is wonderful at creating these tiny, insular and quite frankly, claustrophobic communities and that are always fascinating to read about. When reading one of his novels, I find it so easy to get lost in the world he is showing us with characters like Eustacia Thomasin and Diggory the reddleman who have certainly left their mark. Hello everyone and hope your week is going well. Today I’m sharing six books from my collection with #artonthecover Art can take so many different forms from the cartoon-like The Princess Bride to portraits as displayed on Violets. Then you’ve got a taxidermied roadkill raccoon for Furiously Happy! 😂 I HIGHLY recommend this book by the way for a fantastic look at mental health in a accessible, self-deprecating and hilarious way. I also studied Return Of The Native at college and loved it - I’m definitely due a re-read. When you’re trying to take a pic of your #currentlyreading pile from your sickbed and you end up having to take two pics - is THAT too many books? 😂 Here’s what I’m reading this week! I’m still making my way through The Woman In White (although I never want it to end!), Voyager in my journey through the Outlander series, Fairy Tale with the #keeperofking bookclub, The Return Of The Native and Life After Life the latter two of which are my current re-reads. I’m at chapter 4 in my audiobook - Murder - The Biography and still enjoying Light Rains Must Fall, a buddy read until Feb 2023 with Mr B. New reads include: Klara And The Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro, starting this tonight with #bitcrackbookclub The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - buddy reading with lots of lovely bookstagrammers and I’m adoring it so far. Nearly 200 pages in. Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari- This is my current nonfiction read. I got to hear him speak in Foyles many years ago and still haven’t read his book! 🙈 A Good Man Is Hard To Find by Flannery O’Connor - this is a book of short stories and I’m starting it tonight as part of my reading challenge from @keeperofpages for book with an ugly front cover 🫣 No offence meant!! The First Woman by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi - reading this with bestie @emmasbookishcorner and we’re having our first chat tonight! About a third of the way through.
