Joaquin stands up from his desk, walking across the room to plop down on Sam’s. “Hey, come get a drink with me.”

“Man, I’m going home. To bed. You see this?” Sam points to the sling his arm is in.

Joaquin raises a brow at him, “What if I add in pizza?”

“Dude—“

“I wanna tell you about my girl. Please?” He presses his palms together, pleading. 

“Oh now you wanna tell me about your girl? After I’ve got a couple of broken ribs?”

Joaquin tries to bite away his grin but can’t. “You getting the shit beat out of you kinda made me realize I want you to meet her.”

“Little shit— you’re getting me dessert too,” Sam grumbles, grabbing his bag and heading toward the door. 

“That late night cookie place is right across the street,” Joaquin calls after him.

Sam watches Joaquin fidget with a smirk on his face. He’s never really seen the man like this, he’s always overly confident. “So, you gonna stall until the food gets here to stall again or—“

Joaquin’s grip on his beer tightens as he gazes down into the amber liquid. “Nah, man. I just, I don’t know— I’ve never met anyone like her before.”

Sam sobers a little bit, realizing how serious Joaquin is. Sitting up, he leans in a little, curious.

“Tell me more.”

Joaquin takes a deep breath, rubbing a hand over his jaw. “It was kinda random, y’know? One of those things where you meet someone and think, this person might change my damn life.”

Sam raises a skeptical brow, waiting.

“I met her on a mission—nothing crazy, just some intel work. She clocked me right away, which should’ve been my first clue she was special.” Joaquin huffs a small laugh, shaking his head. 

“She’s got this way of looking at me, like she already knows what I’m gonna say before I say it. And she’s funny, man. Not just funny—sharp. Quick with it. Keeps me on my toes. But she’s also… sweet. Kind in a way that doesn’t ask for anything back. And when I’m with her, it’s like—” He stops, searching for the words.

Sam tilts his head. “Like what?”

Joaquin’s grip tightens on the beer again. “Like I don’t have to be anyone but me.”

Sam lets out a low whistle. “Damn.”

Joaquin laughs, feeling a little shy. “Yeah. Damn.”

“Can I see her?”

“Yeah, hold on,” Joaquin fishes out his wallet, pulling out the photo booth film strip he keeps there. 

Four photos, all of them where he couldn’t keep his eyes off of you— not when you were looking so angelic. Looking at the photo along with Sam makes him miss you more right now. 

“Oh, she’s got you wrapped around her finger.”

“I…I would do anything for her. I think anything, for real.”

“Would she do the same?”

“In a heartbeat.”

Sam nods, taking a pull of his beer. “And have you told her yet?”

“Told her what?”

“That you’re in love with her.”

Joaquin’s cheeks warm. He scratches at the back of his head with a sheepish smile. “Was hoping you could give me some pointers?”

Sam sighs. “Maybe I can finally give you some after this weekend.”

“Finally gonna tell him, huh?”

“Yeah, I think it’s about time. He’s got a weekend off appearances, we don’t have a mission. I don’t know,” Sam shrugs, letting his eyes drift to the mounted tv screen playing an old sports game. 

“It’ll be perfect man. Just be yourself.”

Sam scoffs playfully, his eyes returning to Joaquin. “How’d you end up giving me pointers?”

Joaquin shimmies his shoulders. “Must be the natural leader in me.”

“Yeah, yeah. So when am I meeting her?”

“I don’t know, let me pull up our calendar,” Joaquin starts to type in his password, scrolling through the date. 

“Our calendar? As in your shared calendar with her?”

“Fuck off.”

Sam can’t stop laughing. “I can’t wait to tell Buck.”

this is the first time i got this! idk what up with tumblr. rude of it tbh bc i really like this ask. my answer might get a little long tho bc my fave hcs for sam revolve around the backstory the mcu doesnt super give us. warning, this got long oops

1. fave sam headcanon? is one ive seen a few times but not very often (because people like to make sam the most stable person in every room, but not acknowledging it takes a lot of work/going through some shit to become that person). sam, before having his shit together for the time we know him in the mcu, spent a lot of time in his early life feeling unmoored. first it was this call to do something bigger with his life that he felt so young and answered first by joining the airforce. then there was a period between joining and being accepted into the falcon program where the airforce wasnt what he hoped it would be/he struggled heavily with being there. ofc after riley died he spent a lot of time not knowing what to do next/dealing with survivor's guilt from that but i think this was compounded by his parents dying around that time too (maybe a year or two later). and one that i think @thankssaragorn made canon in my mind is that The Thing that made him realize he needed to check back into life post-grief was cass being born on the anniversary of riley's death. so i guess thats a tandem cass and sam headcanon but i really really loved it and it's canon in my brain. he was feeling unmoored again by all this death surrounding him and then suddenly i think cass changed so much for him. and made him realize that he had to commit to being alive again. i feel like this was probably more into it than i couldve gotten but also. i couldve gotten deeper into it. it's very early and so im extra wordy

2. fave sambucky headcanon? i personally love when people headcanon them as having interracted between tws and civil war at least a few times (whether it was them providing occassional backup if a fight got too much/them hooking up and then being really weird about it/etc) i think that adds a really weird and funky layer to the two of them. also one that anthony mackie himself brought up during the infinity war press tour which was sam visiting bucky in wakanda. there are like. mountains upon mountains of text for steve visiting bucky in wakanda but comparatively it's a desert out here for sambucky on that one. romantic, platonic, weird situationship they arent talking about where sometimes they like go out and spend time together or stay in and spend time together and sometimes theyre like "no why would i want to see you i just happen to be here right now" and then they spend sam's visit avoiding each other like weirdos. as if sam wasnt literally there to see bucky. idk they a. are obviously weird about each other for much of the mcu and b. obviously know each other well enough that sam is texting bucky semi-regularly (enough to be ignored) at the start of tfatws. i think they were weird for a reason

a couple bonus sam/sambucky/bucky/wilson family hc's that are just my brain thinking ab them because i was filtering through the ones catalogued in my brain to find ones i wanted to share for this:

bucky and his sister rebecca were twins (he was 4 minutes older and a whole foot taller. he held these two things against her for their entire childhoods, as one does). he sometimes now watches sarah and sam interact and feels this awful combination of grief, jealousy, and joy that sam still gets to be with his sister. sam doesnt find out about this until theyve been actually dating for about a year and a half because bucky is a ✨️communication king✨️

sam drinking orange juice straight out of the bottle is his habit that just about everyone around him wishes he would break (he started doing this as a young teen and Never Stopped. sarah wishes every day that he would). however. bucky also does this. dont drink the orange juice at their house theres an 87% chance it has both of their saliva in it. unless of course it was never opened. then it's safe

this is only a headcanon by mcu standards bc this man Doesnt Get Mentioned in the mcu at all. sam and sarah have an older brother named gideon whos occupation changes in my mind depending on the day and the weather and what i feel like on that day but in my mind he's been a lawyer, a doctor, a pastor (in comic canon sam's father was a pastor. sometimes you have to create a way for a character to have complicated feelings ab religion bc the mcu changes their whole story) and many other things. but regardless of occupation i do not think gideon is at all close with the wilson family. where sam left with the intention of coming back, and had delacroix and their family in his mind as a safe place, gideon left delacroix with the intention of never coming back. this left sam warring with the urge to stay and care for his family/leave and do something for himself. by tfatws we see he has managed to do both, but initially, he leaves with the air force. this causes some tension between him and sarah that eventually smoothes out

one i think is just cute sometimes is sam being the one to find alpine and bring her home one day. she then proceeds to lock eyes on bucky and decide right then and there (as some cats do) that any other human is unnecessary. except when sam has toys treats or some other food. he acted affronted by this for a few days because it was funny but deep down he's really happy it worked out this way. he kinda wishes he had a cat that would lock onto him though. this happens when figaro (his cat from the comics) just. appears in their home one day, sitting in their kitchen sink. nobody knows where she came from. but she looked at sam (woke up first, therefore in the kitchen first) and srarred purring and when bucky came downstairs sam was bathing this strange new cat and at that point what can you do but accept that you and your partner have two cats now

wow. that was a lot. and its 7am. but i woke up a little early this morning and saw this and my fingers started typing ahead of my brain so hopefully all of that makes sense!!

H: How would you describe your style?

Eclectic! I love various ships and I love x reader and x OFC

One moment it’s Loki x ofc, then it’s Stucky, then it’s Eddie x Reader x Venom, then it’s some SamBucky.

I also think my writing style is straight forward- I’m not good at flowery prose as part of my job is writing in plain, albeit formal English.

I also like things to make sense at feel somewhat realistic (the irony is not lost on me…)

V: If you could write the sequel (or prequel) to any fic out there not written by yourself, which would you choose?

I think it would have to be The Wilson-Barnes Family series by the wonderful @writerkenna - the world that she’s made is so wonderfully real in the emotions of all the characters, and how they navigate life as parents, friends, lovers, superhero’s. Every piece is raw but also nuanced and every new chapter and series part makes me smile. I’ve been privileged enough to share some of my experiences of parenthood with ‘Kenna’ when she’s been developing story lines, and I was beaming for days.

In my world they meet a girl 5/6 yrs old, pretty witty, a tad snappy (v much like Bucky), during a mission. Maybe a GRC mission, dw they're on the side of the people.

The kid totally latches on to Bucky because he's cool and mysterious. But Bucky doesn't wanna touch them with a 10ft pole because he doesn't trust himself with someone so vulnerable yet. But the kid just follows him around all the time.

Sam teases the absolute shit out of him for it. He'll find the kid asleep on Bucky. The kid will come along to meetings. And Sam's just snickering like "When did we adopt?" "Do they have your last name, or mine?" Bucky glares in response.

But the mission ends up going sideways. Flagsmashers attack? Idk. But it's a mess. In the panic Bucky loses the kid. And it wrecks him. His instincts take over as he runs through the burning building. It's the closest he gets to his Winter Soldier side. Which terrifies him, but he pushes through to find the kid.

He ends up finding them (of course), returns to Sam all wrecked, panting and heaving, but he's got the kid. He doesn't let them go till a medic pries them from his arms. Sam doesn't even have to ask. Bucky doesn't let the kid out of his sights. They just come along home. They get Sam's last name.

Or the counter. Same set up. But instead of a kid they meet a pregnant mom. And Sam being a people's person of course hits it off with her. They talk a lot, Sam checks in on her a lot because Sam knows about stress and all.

Either right before, during, or right after the attack at the camp mom goes into labour and it isn't going well. In her last convo with Sam she asks him to look after her child. So picture a completely messed up Sam, swaddling this tiny cute baby. Holding the world in his arms. And again ofc Bucky doesn't even have to ask if they're keeping the baby. They name them after their mother and still get Sam's last name.

Same, I also like Sam and Bucky but Bucky and Sarah would be cute too, even if I prefer sambucky a little more. My only problem with buckysarah is, that Bucky at this point, has a little too much baggage to be with her and the kids. It's one thing to be an uncle and another to be a step-dad. I still would like it if buckysarah went canon, as long it's not just for one episode and the next season/movie they're like 'Who is Sarah?' here have a white li for Bucky. That would suck.

oh i agree. like obviously i dont mind the flirting rn but if they were to end up together i need it to be after bucky gets genuine mental help and ofc a season or two of romantic development. same with sambucky. both sam and bucky need to go to therapy and should have actual development if theyre going to end up together. 

and i honestly definitely do not want a white love interest for bucky at all, no matter if its a one night thing, a whole season of it, idc. the white fans would run with it and essentially it’ll end up being his endgame due to popular demand. i dont want it

Ugh. This sucks. I feel like I can't just come on here for fun because every third post is someone calling AM homophobic. And I'm trying to just not get caught up bc ppl feel how they feel, but it seems like a level of anger he doesn't deserve. Probably bc I, personally, don't read his answer as homophobic or hateful nor do I believe he is those things. I saw people saying we should stop the "tfatws is a fanfiction" joke because it was taking the credits away from the show writers. My dude, have we been reading the same fanfictions? Because when I say this, I mean it as a compliment.

Fanfic writers are the one to remember details, make clever call backs, tie loose ends from the canon... Essentially, what we're blaming Marvel for not doing when an Avengers movie ruin the character's arc from his previous solo movie (not even gonna bother giving an example...). Moreover, fanfic as its core is two things:

Apparent writing. You don't start reading a fanfic because of its title or even its summary. You look at the pairing and go through the tags. Today you want a slow burn or a coffee shop AU or something canon compliant. Or just smut. It doesn't mean it's bad writing or that there won't be any enjoyable plot twists. Heck, sometimes, knowing they're coming make them even better. Apparent writing means you know where the writer is heading and even what is their destination. And you're here for the trip. The Falcon? Ofc, it's future Captain America right there. But who cares? We want to see it happening. Which leads to point two:

Fanfic is characters driven/characters focused. Come on! We barely have any *action* fic, it's all "our fav are getting therapy" (looking at Owlet's fic rn). And on that point, Tfatws delivers too. As much as we'd want to jump to domestic sambucky already, we have to see it happening. And Zemo saying the trigger words to Bucky? That would be a fanfic basic starting point. What's interesting is what will be their reaction. What does it say about the two characters and their relationship?

I could add many more things (like the call backs or Zemo reading Machiavelli so we know what type of character he is, the tropy scenes like the therapy or the bar in Madripoor that are all about vibes and not so much about plot) but my point is: Tfatws is written like a fanfiction and this is why I dig it so much.

two wlw rarepair answers, both from the mcu (sorry y'all lmao):

1) romantic sarah wilson and may parker, pining & fluff/humor

first of all. FIRST OF ALL. two widowed, hardworking women who have struggled in life, have raised sons at least partially on their own, and also know the difficulties of superhero life (sarah with sam and may with peter)?? i am Obsessed with the potential dynamic. OBSESSED. all the flirting, omg, so much soft teasing. may dancing all cornily like she does in homecoming and sarah finding it the sweetest thing ever (and also showing her how to dance for real, god bless). sarah helping may with cooking (the INTIMACY of standing close to your crush in the kitchen, okay) and may learning how to cook certain recipes to impress sarah (and probably burning the first few tries). dates on the wilson boat, please and thank you. may getting to really see the stars while in delacroix because lbr, queens has issues with light pollution that delacroix doesn't, and also both of them thinking about how beautiful the other is in the moonlight. may helping sarah navigate new york!! obviously nola dates, too, which we already know i love with sambucky. speaking of sambucky, i was talking with ambi earlier and i think it would be SO FUNNY if in an endgame sarahmay and sambucky fic you have sam flirting with may and sarah flirting with bucky just to annoy each other (note: bucky and may would either be aware and totally okay with it and/or it's very harmless flirting that's not misleading and stuff. if that makes sense lol). i just think these ladies would be so sweet together!!

also, fun bonus: the family dynamic that comes with it! peter would be a hit with aj and cass and would ofc adore them in return. sam is perpetually annoyed by peter but also (begrudgingly) cares for the kid, too.

2) romantic sarah wilson and pepper potts, yearning & hurt/comfort

the a n g s t potential gets me here. once again, you have two widowed, hardworking women who have struggled in life, have raised children at least partially on their own, and know the difficulties of superhero life (sarah with sam and pepper with tony), but here there are some Important Differences. namely, the class/status/whatever you wanna call it difference. that's just a fact of canon, and i think that's what makes this potential pairing so Painful (in a good way!). because in most scenarios, i just don't think their relationship would work out in the long term (although y'all know me, i can OBVIOUSLY also think of happy endings tyvm) because their lives strongly clash in that sense. maybe they meet at some hero-related event sam brings sarah to, and tbh i like the idea of there being some immediate attraction between them (romantic, sexual, whatever floats your boat) and going from there. again, the FLIRTING and TEASING, i love it. i feel like they would have a lot of fun with each other and possibly even fall in love, and then of course you can decide if you want to go a) angst route, where even though their lives feel more complete with the other in it, there are things they can't sacrifice and thus have to break it off or b) HAPPY ENDING, DAMMIT, which is always a valid option.
