Can Azul Love?

This is just a quick analysis my brain spurred off into.

First there's this scenario I made specifically about this concept - Azul Falls In Love And Can't Handle It (Just wanted to link it instead of repeating everything in this post)

But even in other fics, I love exploring that concept! Because - to me, at least - love isn't always a choice. It becomes a choice later on. That sounds confusing but allow me to clarify.

There are two types of feelings commonly known as "love" that I'm referring to - Infatuation, and love. These two have nothing to do with age, or even a person's maturity level. Infatuation is the first part of a relationship or a pre-relationship stage, where every interaction gives you butterflies, you feel like you're on fire every second you spend, and all that good stuff.

Love is a choice you make. You're not getting butterflies anymore. You are choosing to build a life with someone, to be there for them even without the boost of infatuation.

Infatuation can come and go - it's pretty short-lived, in all honesty. Love, on the other hand, is stable and much longer-lasting when requited. You care deeply about a person, in spite of all their flaws or weaknesses.

Very few people can't feel infatuated - even Aromantic people can end up experiencing the same thing, just from a platonic angle, where you really admire someone to the point of glossing over their flaws.

Azul is no exception. He can get infatuated with someone too. He's not immune, and god, he hates it. Seeing you gives him butterflies, he wants to do everything in his power to make you happy, but why? This isn't supposed to be how he acts!

Love is a separate matter. Love requires a level of emotional maturity that - let's face it - not many Night Raven students have. Azul would have to care for you in spite of your flaws and choose to invest his time into a relationship with you despite potential losses like time for his business. He'll have to choose you despite the lack of chemicals in his brain encouraging him to do so. And, in his current state, I'm not quite sure if Azul is capable of that.

But the thing is, Azul isn't stagnant. It may not seem like it, but he is gradually growing. And he's definitely capable of love - even if it isn't romantic - just look at the way he talks about his family! I meant it when I said I wasn't sure. Though there's a chance he might not be able to make that choice, there's a chance he can, too.

And hopefully, when the time comes, and Azul and whoever his partner is are a good way in their relationship, and the chemicals finally wear off, he can make that choice.

all i want from the next episode of leverage redemption is for parker and astrid’s conflict to be played as though it’s a ridiculously intense sibling rivalry. not the whole episode, clearly it’s gonna get a lot more dramatic, but just a couple of comedic moments where parker is seething at having to share her mother figure with her kind-of-ex-nemesis. parker has gotten a little used to being mom’s (sophie’s) favorite child through the years and she does NOT want a new interpol agent sister.

it makes me want to tear my hair out when someone mentions that platonic relationships need to have sexual/romantic undertones to be interesting. friendships that blur the lines between romantic and platonic is great, friendships that have sexual relations are great, any kind of friendship is great. but these days im seeing this awful thought of "friendship needs to not be strictly platonic to be interesting and platonic" and people don't realise that this is just "friendships are less important than romantic/sexual relationship" in a different font. im very intense about my friends and each of my relationship with them is different than the other. one of my best friends is also almost like my partner. another one of my best friend is just my best friend. there is nothing romantic or sexual orientation whatever between us. i love both of them dearly and one relationship here is not more important than the other to me. i smile so wide my face hurts when i see her walking towards me. we used to live a few streets away and yet everytime i saw her i used to run to go embrace her. i have seen them in their lowest and they have seen me in mine. i do not want to kiss her on the lips or make her my girlfriend. the thought has never crossed my mind. but she has saved my life multiple times. she is a part of my soul. she is my friend. and if you say "yeah, that's what i mean, that emotion and its intensity is inherently romantic!" then that means you haven't experienced the height of love and care friendship can offer and im so sorry for your loss. also you are subscribing into the inherently harmful thought of "everything that is intense and meaningful is romantic". like my wonderful friend vik once said, "they're not my just anything. they're my friends."

i know buckravi is not a major ship for some reason but can we talk about how good that ep was for them too cause like!! it was so good!!! buck wanting ravi's attention and interest and ravi being so tired because he thinks/knows he's just a replacement (and you could say that maybe he doesn't want to get his hopes up that buck actually cares about him 👀) and then ravi seeing buck's ex that he's still pining for and bringing them back together so he can leave and doesn't have to be the person buck settles for

like i know canonically none of that is meant to be deep on ravi's end and it is just funny, but in a fandom context i am finding it fun to play around with what potential motivations can be found in there

i think the reason i hate childhood best friends to lovers but not when theyre mlm/wlw is because when its a het ship, people expect them to date as children/teens, so most of the movie/show/book is denying romantic feelings, rather than expanding on the once thought to be only platonic feelings in mlm/wlw ships

See, here's the thing about Dedue and the non-Dimitri members of the Faerghus Four. They're not his friends. Ashe and Mercedes are his friends, Annette is debatable, but Ingrid, Felix, and Sylvain he is not even looking to be friends with.

They're his in-laws. In-laws that, at least in the Academy phase, he doesn't even particularly like.

Like, if not for Dimitri, he would absolutely not talk to those people. He's making nice with them because they're the closest thing Dimitri has to family that's not actively trying to murder either of them, and they're important to Faerghus so Dimitri has to have a relationship with them no matter what, and it's important to Dimitri that they and Dedue at least kind of get along with each other as much as possible.

But Dedue isn't trying to be friends with them! Dedue is like, I'll go to the family holiday party because it's important to you but if Felix starts talking shit or Ingrid says something racist then I'm not going to be the one to deal with that. They're your relatives and I'll be nice but that's your problem. He's not looking to be close with them, he just wants to have a halfway decent relationship with them for Dimitri's sake and like no more than that.

And they improve a lot in their supports, especially after the time skip, especially in Three Hopes, but like. The relationship there is still fundamentally in-laws. It's just a graduation from "shitty in-laws I'm putting up with" to "in-laws I've come around on and can have a decent-to-good time with." Depending on what supports you get they can even graduate to "in-laws I actively like and admire." But like. He's still hanging out with them because they hang out with Dimitri. He's not hanging out with them for their own sakes.

Dimitri has one important familial relationship with them and another vitally, crucially important relationship with Dedue. Both are fascinating to explore and I love to explore them. But they're completely different relationships.

Like they're not all a big five-person friend group, Dimitri is in the position of having to like. Try and keep the peace between his extended family in all but name who he still loves, and the person who has been the most important person to him for his entire teens so far. Even if Dimitri were tired of his friends' shit personally he can't just stop talking to them, they're the future leaders of their houses, the only houses that are all in behind House Blaiddyd and not fomenting assassinations. He HAS to maintain a good relationship with them for Faerghus.

Dedue gets this. He'll play nice with them. He knows Dimitri also needs them on his side if he's ever going to restore Duscur, but he doesn't have to like them. He'll save their asses on the battlefield for Dimitri but he's going to go hang out with Mercedes and Ashe after.

why can beastzai comfortably kill himself permanently where canon dazai doesn’t?

beastzai just makes me sad but i like the implications it leaves about canonverse dazai tho those implications can also just be drawn out from canon itself

- (canon) dazai knows how to kill himself in a meaningful way but avoids doing so; if he’s had previous, sincere attempts, theyve consistently been foiled

- tho dazai might seem like a grey character he sees the world through binary opposites/black and white, which is applicable to beast in the sense that dazai’s search for a purpose in life has two possible outcomes: fulfillment and lack of fulfillment. in his own eyes, dazai’s life is useless or useful - if useful, and his purpose is carried out and seen through, then dazai’s life has no meaning anymore, leaving him to die in peace. dazai is successful killing himself in beast when he isnt in canon verse because he has fulfilled his purpose and believes he extricated himself thoroughly enough from the lives of ppl he cares about that his death will have no long lasting emotional impact. said reason for living was to save oda and ensure the world was fit for him to survive in

- then, maybe in his earlier years his desire to find a reason to live could be considered a survival tactic, unknown to even himself. without a distinct purpose to fulfill dazai can’t truly feel that he is “done” or “finished”, and oda’s wish for him to live on the side of light has no real end. where dazai would otherwise see desire to live as a scale with two distinct sides (fulfillment/lack of fulfillment) oda’s wish bypasses the scale altogether and has no discernible end, thus dazai cant be fully fulfilled and feel comfortable enough to successfully kill himself.

to 16 year old dazai, young and extreme in the way teenagers are (i dont say that in a mocking way or one that makes light of the teenage experience) he had finally found a goal when he received the onslaught of memories of canon dazai, a goal he was so desperate to see through that it both countered his apathy while exacerbating his self sacrificial mindset and behaviors. dazai sees himself as a vehicle of action rather than a human, which persists in canon verse too. dazai is less the person moving the pawns and more of a pawn moving the other pawns in the “right” direction - he wants to make it so that his removal from the chess board will not impact his side’s victory, that things are done the way they need to be that his broad goal, whatever that may be, is reached with or without him. but that vehicle is all he is (in his mind) - where other people are distinctly human, he will only ever be a pawn, entirely depersonalized, and thats only exacerbated in beast

thing is canon dazai doesn’t really counter this extreme way of viewing things but at the stage he’s at now he can’t simply remove himself from the lives of everybody he knows. people rely on him, they need him, they like him, and he can’t just pull away without consequence. even if his personality is greatly exaggerated and his amenability to expressing vulnerability is still extremely low he does not have the choice of being a mere vehicle of action anymore because of his awareness that people care for him

so, wary as he is of not having that control over his life, of not feeling like he can comfortably die whenever he wants, dazai’s always wanted to feel human and be perceived as human, and he likes having people to protect. even if hes scared that theyll face the consequences of being associated with him dazai will ensure theyre safe which is.. a really broad and almost endless goal to take on !and he is aware its a group effort instead of a scheme that can be seen through by a mastermind. he needs to communicate with the people he cares about (ADA), needs to have faith theyll protect each other just like theyll protect him, even if his instinct fights against it and hes scared to leave things, tasks, etc in hands other than his own

im not saying dazais particularly good at being vulnerable or relying on other people and i think his mindset is still unhealthy and self sacrificial but canon dazai is so embedded in the ADA in a way beastzai wasnt in the PM at age 16. beastzai had the option to “[erase] himself from the narrative” (i love this phrase i stole it from hamilton) but canon dazai quite literally does not. hes in too deep!

kirishima’s lying on his bed with his hands behind his head, watching his best friend spiral for what has to be the third time this week.

“she said i smelled good,” katsuki huffs, whirling around. “who says that? who just..! says that to someone?”

“people who think you smell good?” kirishima offers helpfully.

katsuki glares at him like he’s the dumbest person alive. “she said it while huggin' me. and she said it in that sweet fuckin' singsongy voice.”

“i don’t know anymore,” he mutters. “she calls me ‘kats’ like it’s just a nickname but then she’ll say it in that soft fuckin' voice like it’s something else. she’s always touching me and smiling and calling me cute but she does it so casually, like it’s just her being her. i don’t know what’s real. i don’t know if i’m hallucinating. i think i’m losing my goddamn mind. like, it's the tone. she goes all 'aweee, thanks kats!' in that stupid fuckin' sing-songy tone. i hate it! fucking..!” kirishima has no idea what katsuki's trying to punch to death. the air, maybe?

after watching him flop around like a dying fish for a moment, he offered gently, “why don’t you just ask her how she feels?”

he says nothing, but kirishima can tell what he's trying to say just from his look.

“well then,” kirishima shrugs. “guess you’ll just have to keep suffering.”

and katsuki does. every time you brush your fingers over his knuckles or play with his hoodie strings or grin at him from across the room with that stupid sweet look in your eyes, he suffers. quietly. dramatically.

because he wants you to mean it so badly.

but he has no idea if you do.
