Omg your tomgreg post… we’re so different in that I am so catastrophically attracted to Matthew Macfadyen (he’s not even balding his forehead is just getting slightly larger every season 😩) but I was so fucking irritated by people uncritically describing Tom Wambsgans as like trans or literally using she/her pronouns or whatever for him just because he’s a male character who is emotional and at the wrong end of a power differential in his relationship, when his character was intentionally an exploration of his maleness vs his powerlessness in the face of his billionaire wife. people’s gender brain rot got in the way of their ability to engage with overt themes in the show they spent their lives blogging about … I’d love if u had more thoughts on this phenomenon bc it drove me slightly crazy like I saw people ACTUALLY saying he was experiencing misogyny. While he was actively committing or complicit in misogyny against his beautiful wife

I don't know if I have anything coherent, but this is like, to me, the logical endpoint of a couple things:

The tendency of people #onhere to fandomize politics and politicize fandom. You can't just consume something, it has to be politically "correct" to consume it, you have to be consuming something with the correct political messaging or it has to be somehow subversive or political of you TO consume it. Thats why we have a genre of posts #onhere that go "here's why this piece of super popular media is THE MOST PROGRESSIVE WOQUÉ THING EVER, and if you don't get it you're stupid and conservative" (and then there's the genre of backlash posts, "here's why you're STUPID if you think this super popular media is progressive and it makes you a FASCIST to enjoy it"). So, this character has to be imbued with political value as a member of an oppressed group in order to justify liking him or finding him attractive or interesting.

The general over-identification women do with male characters. Women in general as a part of what early feminists called "male-identification" see themselves reflected in men, identify with men and their goals, and IMO imbue men with an excess of meaning and depth that isn't actually there--like haven't we all been around a woman dating some male slime and she's talking about how deep and serious and special he is, and like, he's next to her watching TikToks of "EPIC PWN!!! BITCH KAREN GETS WHATS COMING TO HER 😂😂😂💯💯💯🔥🔥🔥". (Adjacently my pinned post is in response to this phenomenon... people were calling Kendall or Forehead or whoever Miss Sugar Pink Liquor Liquor Lips. Girl that album is about being a WOMAN it's about the pressures of BEING A WOMAN.) So there is this tendency to read our own experiences of harm, violation, and oppression onto these male canvases, especially given that there is no cultural canvas more blank (and therefore no tool more valuable in storytelling) than an average white guy.

The idea, very popular and common among idiots, that it is femininity as such that is oppressed, rather than women as a class. This leads quite naturally I think to the idea that having a feminine or seemingly un-masculine trait or quality is what "is" or "makes" an oppressed person, who then becomes, by transitive property, a woman or woman-adjacent. Think of, for example, Lestat from AMC's new IWTV. People were calling him a "malewife" and "mother" when s1 dropped. There is no textual evidence for this, and he is clearly positioned as a family patriarch... but he gestures with his hands in a feminine (read: f*ggy) way, and by transitive property he becomes, to these people, functionally the same as a woman. For another example: when SPN had its big resurgence on here, people posted obsessively about how Dean Winchester was "eldest daughter coded" because he loved and protected his little brother. Well... no, he was trained to do so by his patriarchal father, and he is obsessively hyper-masculine. But he has the "feminine" trait of loving his brother, which makes him womanlike, since obviously men can't love. (Hey you deangirls said it, not me.)

All of this, for me, tracks completely with gender politics as they currently stand, but I have no clue how these people live with the cognitive dissonance, especially since I see decent critical thinkers participating in it all the time. It's disingenuous and just, well, dishonest. And stupid. I cannot emphasize enough how stupid it is. And to anyone with clear eyes on the reality of women's oppression, it's also straight up offensive.

A song that is succ coded to you? You know I weirdly don’t really have any specific songs that are coded with the overall show to me. The closest might be fingertips by Lana Del Rey w all the siblings. Otherwise they all tend to be really specific. My no. 1 for Roman is ultraviolence, for Kendall it’s Ativan by sufjan stevens, and for romangerri its agora hills by Doja or diet Mountain Dew demo version by Lana (those are like my fun romangerri picks). Roman is of course Doja and Lana respectively. I can truly connect about any Lana song to Roman though lol.

Lore you want unpacked? Oh god…so much. Most of it tends to revolve around Roman, Kendall, and Gerri (unsurprisingly). I literally want to know anything and everything about Gerri. More about Roman being the only one Logan physically abused. Roman’s time in la in the film industry. Dog pound. Kendall’s history with mental illness. Those are the big ones.

Favorite motif? not real/nothing/motif 4everrrrr. My icon is Kendall telling Roman he’s not a real person and that’s honestly one of the scenes I think about most. Also no real people involved is the aspect from cruises I always go back to as well as how it (imo) connects a lot to Roman thematically and his character arc. And of course Kendall water motif! Tom and Shiv business relationship moving forward imo, with marriage being part of that front. Shiv doesn't like to admit defeat and Tom needs a beard. That weak hand touching despite Shiv voting Tom through was like next level dead bedroom.

Tom and Greg bathroom scene I was shaking. I honest to god thought we'd get some angry Judas kiss. Matsson even called Greg Judas for God's sake.

The should have gone there, but like with Kendall and Stewy, they talk around it. Stewy says he's into weird sex and Kendall says Stewy kisses guys on molly and then Shiv's look?! All in one scene?!?! Excuse me while I scream!! The general audience? It's all words, forgotten without being explicitly seen on screen.

I have a lot of thoughts on how things should have properly played out, Tom and Greg have been one of the most endeared and talked about potential will they/won't they queer coded relationships in, maybe, almost ever... as representation in a show that isn't just about gay people and that aren't explicitly queer from near the get go, it would have been amazing. But we don't get nice things.

The ending for tomgreg?

Tom always knew Greg was a piece of shit. Despite their charged punch out in the bathroom he still wants him.

Tom claimed Greg as an "item" he wanted. That is just. I do love it, but it's subtle. As stated earlier he may need to "castrate" his pay, but he will be able to keep him. That was very important to Tom. I'm disappointed again at the callbacks to Nero's castration of Sporus but it's never explicitly stated, would have been so easy for either of them to actually draw the connection again by calling the other Nero/Sporus at the end of the series but the wider audience will simply never make the connection.

I want the next level CEO Tom and Greg fics, and more of Matsson calling them both sexy.

The show maybe could just continue without Kendall and Roman and I'd be fine, almost felt it set up with the old guard discussion on the moves to come...

Guys, I think I may have cracked the code to the mysterious "Tomgreg Vibe Switch" of 04x01. The question is not IF tomgreg will go canon this season, but rather HOW canon will they continue to get?

Yes, I believe they are canon -- kinda. And furthermore,, it will never be addressed, ever. But it did happen. That's part of the beauty of Succession; it leaves it to the viewers to fill in the blanks to questions like "Why is it dangerous to bring up Logan's sister, Rose?" "What happened to Connor's mother?" and "What the hell's the deal with Tom and Greg?" It also makes the now-infamous "Disgusting Brothers" thing a million times funnier in this context than it already is.

Here's how I see it; buckle up, fuckleheads.

Tom & Greg are out on the town grabbing a drink together, when they spot a young woman across the bar and really like her vibe. Greg's role is indeed that of Tom's wingman (Shiv got it right), but it turns out the woman is very interested in a threesome. So they all go back to Tom's apartment where, for lack of a better term, the woman becomes the willing middle of a tomgreg panini (sorry), and the boys are NOT "taking turns", if you get my drift (Shiv got it slightly wrong). Now, the physics would dictate that Tom and Greg be very, very, close -- face-to-face -- during the "act". And at some point, they break the cardinal "2 guys, 1 girl" rule of absolutely, positively NO EYE CONTACT between the guys. Tomgreg reach "fruition" as they're looking right into each other's soul (and probably touching each other).

 Afterwards, touch-starved Greg is bouncing off the walls, and who can blame him? It's the best sex he's had in like, ever. And naturally he's feeling very close towards his friend Tom and wants to continue to form this new intimate bond with him (it's not about the girl; as we've seen, it's never about the girl with Greg). I mean, technically they didn't rub their dicks together, but they kinda ... did. Tom's at first happy to engage Greg in happy talk about their joint "score", but soon after has an existential crisis over whether of not this means he and Greg actually fucked. Later, Greg is scrolling on a Deuxmoi-type site and sees the headline "The Disgusting Brothers", followed by a blind item that is obviously about them and their little three-way. This makes Greg even more stoked -- he's a star! This blind item is also how Shiv got wind of The Disgusting Brothers.

 Fast-forward to Logan's party, which, judging from Greg's still not having touched the ground, is very soon after Tom & Greg's eventful night out. He brings a date whom he barely knows (that "I may have fallen for her" is b.s. that Kerry sees right through), and after a little (unsatisfying?) tryst, he's back practically glued to Tom's side. Greg is very comfortable talking about sex with Tom, not to mention repeatedly invading his personal space; every moment is an opportunity to be in some sort of physical contact with Tom. Greg's very giddy and clingy, as if it was Tom he had sex with (which, again, he practically did). Tom's still emotionally squicked by it, and Greg creepily whispering "The Disgusting Brothers!(TM)" in his ear only makes it worse. Tom needs to shut Greg up, bring him down to earth, and get him to behave in public. So he goes into emergency bully/dom mode, first disarming Greg with the CCTV lie (which Greg somehow believes -- or does he?), then forcing his underling to give him all the sordid details of his indiscretion with his rando date, before finally badgering him into confessing it all to Logan.  

(I also believe they’re playing a kinky game, where Tom gets off on forcing Greg to tell him about every sexual moment he has, and Greg gets off on telling him -- all in public)

Anyway, that's what I think happened. And I will “watch the show incorrectly” with this plausible bit of tomgreg history as a backstory.
