A figment of season one, with the "students in the wrong grade in the background" silliness it's known for (even if 2-7 Final Mix had "growth spurt Sandra Dialo"... I think), and not just with Yumi (Mohamed Kantaoui is also sitting behind Odd)... but looking at the boy to Yumi's left (our right) is seriously making me wonder... would that "technically" be Pierre François in a red shirt (instead of green, or a character with the wrong palette, as has happened to Noémie Nguyen and even Thomas Jolivet at least once)... or could we go out on a limb and say that's Alexandre Pépin in casual clothes (as in his only two confirmed appearances, in 1-1 Teddyzilla and 1-26 False Start -- which is more of a "blink and you'll miss it" encounter -- he's wearing the same dress outfit)?
Part of me wants to, given that he's a full-fledged character you almost never see (and looks almost like a carbon copy of Pierre, more so than the difference between Bastien Roux and Thierry Suarés)... but it's probably just even more of an animation error I'm just hyping up because I can. XD

Inspired by the real story of a high school American-football coach and his team’s participation in the 2004 season. The fall and rise of one of the most consistent team, especially after holding a record for the longest winning streak, what happens when it was broken unexpectedly? Do the players lose the confidence, coach be clueless, parents go crazy and media annoys them, is what neatly this film narrated. It looked nice to me and I had a good time, but it was too long and not inspiring as the other sports film based on the true events. From the director of ‘Coach Carter’, another decent sports film. I am not disappointed because I was not expecting to be a masterpiece, though not bad for once viewing. All the actors were good, especially it is Jim Caviezel’s one of the major roles and he was amazing. American-football was always been an Americas sport, so I never interested in it except watching films based on them for inspiration. Especially after ‘Conccusion’, my interest on them dropped further. Whatever I said is not a reason to skip the film. As a film, it did the right thing to portray the real life achievers on the screen to boost the young sports persons. Only to me it was just an above average, but for many others, it is one of the best sports film of the year. Forget the American-football, what I liked was, achievements are good for our progress and make a career, but sometimes there’s much more than making records in the games. So it’s a good moral lesson film than a fine entertaining film. I won’t recommend it, but definitely not a waste of time. 6.5/10

So this year I, like a lot of people, was going through some stuff. And the way I coped, particularly over the summer, was by reading. I read between 275 and 300 books this year (final count pending), which is certainly the most I’ve done in at least a decade. And a lot of them were very good! I narrowed myself down to a list of forty recommendations, with short write-ups of ten, and made a point of not repeating authors. You can see everything else on my StoryGraph account though.
YA/MG:
The Beast Player - Nahoko Uehashi trans. Cathy Hirano
Death Sets Sail - Robin Stevens
Echo After Echo - A.R. Capetta
Half World - Hiromi Goto
A Phoenix First Must Burn: Sixteen Stories of Black Girl Magic, Resistance, and Hope - ed. Patrice Caldwell
Shadow of the Batgirl - Sarah Kuhn & Nicole Goux
A Song Below Water - Bethany C. Morrow
The Scapegracers - Hannah Abigail Clarke
YA contemporary fantasy is obviously a well-trodden genre, but this felt like a really fresh take. Sharp prose, interesting magic system, and a really fantastic and original-feeling POV character. I can’t wait for the sequel.
We Are Not Free - Traci Chee
This is a historical novel about residents of Japanese-American internment compounds during WWII, so it is not a light read. But it was powerfully emotionally affecting, and really compelling from a craft perspective as well; each chapter is narrated by a different character, and seeing how all the perspectives intersect is really remarkable.
ADULT FICTION (mostly spec):
A Choir of Lies - Alexandra Rowland
The City We Became - N.K. Jemisin
The Empress of Salt and Fortune - Nghi Vo
The Four Profound Weaves - R.B. Lemberg
Homesick: Stories - Nino Cipri
Master of Poisons - Andrea Hairston
Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water - Zen Cho
Phoenix Extravagant - Yoon Ha Lee
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke
The Seep - Chana Porter
Skin Deep Magic - Craig Laurance Gidney
Stormsong - C.L. Polk
Freshwater - Akwaeke Emezi
One hell of a debut novel. Emezi has said it’s largely autobiographical, which makes it one of two really unique takes on autobiography and memoir that I’ve read this year. It’s about trauma, immigration, queerness, disability...I really just recommend you read it, though perhaps after checking a summary, as it deals very frankly with some potentially triggering subjects.
Not So Stories - ed. David Thomas Moore
This year I spent a lot of time with short stories and novellas, which is a little unusual for me. Several collections made a strong impression (there’s a few others on this list), but I adore the conceit of this one, which features a group of authors of colour responding to Kipling’s intensely colonial “Just So Stories” by writing new fables of their own. Some directly riff on Kipling’s tales, others go in entirely new directions, but all are really effective.
The Raven and the Reindeer - T Kingfisher
Kingfisher is one of those authors I discovered this year who I am shocked I had never read earlier. She’s prolific, works in genres I like, and is beloved by several of my friends. Consider this book a stand-in for her catalogue in general on this list, although of all the books by her I read it’s the only direct fairy-tale retelling. Really great take on Andersen’s Snow Queen
The Unspoken Name - A.K. Larkwood
This was just a ton of fun. Very queer, frequently hilarious, in a totally bizarre fantasy world (worlds, even!) and with a great protagonist. Another really confident debut novel, and another one where I can’t wait to check out where the series goes from here.
NONFIC:
The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma - Bessel van der Kolk
Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories From the 21st Century - ed. Alice Wong
Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space - Amanda Leduc
Distorted Descent: White Claims to Indigenous Identity - Darryl Leroux
In the Dream House - Carmen Maria Machado
The other unique memoir I alluded to above, Machado non-linearly unpacks an abusive relationship she experienced with incredible clarity and artfulness. As someone who’s experienced abuse, parts were very familiar, and Machado’s writing is very effective at laying a situation bare (a skill she uses to great effect in her short fiction as well). This book also has some of the most memorable and narratively impactful citations I have ever seen. Read it to understand how that’s the case.
The North-West is our Mother - Jean Teillet
This is straight-up a history book but it’s a very clear and engaging one. For people who’ve ever wanted to know more about Métis people and our history, particularly in the 19th and early-20th century, this is going to be one of my go-to recs. It’s a little sparser with the more recent stuff, but there are other books to fill that gap.
ROMANCE:
Band Sinister - K.J. Charles
The Doctor’s Discretion - E.E. Ottoman
Invitation to the Dance - Tamara Allen
Two Rogues Make a Right - Cat Sebastian
Silver in the Wood - Emily Tesh
A Taste of Honey - Kai Ashante Wilson
Behind These Doors - Jude Lucens
This year is really the first I’ve read romance in any serious way, but I did read a lot of it and learned a fair amount about what I like. This ticks a lot of those boxes (historical [Edwardian, in this case]! Gay! Engages honestly with social issues of the period!) while also being a story about people negotiating polyamory, with much of the conflict being rooted in how one effectively communicates with the people they care about. Really different from anything else I read, and really well-done.
The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows - Olivia Waite
This is probably my favourite romance novel of the year. It’s a slow-burn Regency story about the relationship between two middle-aged working women, a beekeeper and a bookseller. It’s also a story about prejudice, mob mentality, and the intense class divide in Regency England -- the Peterloo massacre is a significant element, and the way that opposition to it brought together a coalition of different social groups that ultimately could not hold due to other prejudices dividing them. It’s really nuanced, and really effective. Also, I am assured by a lesbian friend that the sex scenes are very hot.
SO ANYWAY. A lot of recommendations, and more detail about some of the ones I most encourage people to pick up. Really in my opinion you can’t go wrong with any of these, though, and I hope you take a look at some next time you’re searching for something to read!
What a year, huh?

Hello, I'm Andrew Leduc And Welcome To Duke Reviews Where We Continue Our Look At Disney...
youtube
Where Today We're Looking At The Aristocats...
This Film is About A Cat Named Duchess (Voiced By Eva Gabor) And Her 3 Kittens Toulouse, Marie And Berlioz Who Taken Out Of Their Home By A Dastardly Butler Named Edgar Who Discovers That He'll Only Get Their Elderly Owner's Fortune When The Cats Die..
Luckily They're Found By Another Cat Named Thomas O'Malley (Voiced By Phil Harris, In His Second Role For Disney) Who Offers To Help Them Get Home...
Will The Cats Get Home And Prevent Edgar From Getting Their Owner's Fortune?
Let's Find Out As We Watch The Aristocats...
After The Opening Theme Sung By Maurice Chevalier...
We Open In Paris In 1910, Where We Meet Our Main Characters, Duchess And Her 3 Kittens, Toulouse, Marie And Berlioz Riding With Their Master, Retired Opera Singer Madame Adelaide Bonfamille On A Carriage Being Driven By Madame's Butler, Edgar And Pulled By Her Horse, Frou Frou...
Arriving At Their Home, Madame Is Expecting Her Friend And Lawyer, Georges Hautcourt To Arrive To Help Her With Her Last Will And Testament. After Georges And Madame Spend A Little Time Reminiscing About The Past, They Get To Work On The Will...
With Edgar Overhearing In His Room, He Hears Madame Say That Her Entire Fortune Will Go To Her Cats, With Edgar Inheriting It Upon Their Death. But Knowing He Won't Live That Long, He Decides To Get Rid Of The Cats...
youtube
As The Kittens Go Into The Parlor To Practice Their Scales And Arpeggios (Leading To Our First Song)...
youtube
And Is A Pretty Good Song...
Edgar Comes Out With The Cat's Milk Which Has Been Duped With Sleeping Pills, Knocking Out Not Only The Cats But Their Mouse Friend, Roquefort (Voiced By Sterling Holloway)...
Driving The Cats Away In His Motorcycle, Edgar Abandons The Cats In The Countryside Only To Be Ambushed By 2 Hounds Named Napoleon (Played By Pat Buttram) And His Partner Lafayette Who Not Only Cause Edgar To Lose His Hat And Umbrella..
But Are One Of The Funniest Things In This Movie...
As Madame, Frou Frou And Roquefort Discover That The Cats Are Gone, Duchess And The Kittens Meet An Alley Cat Named Thomas O' Malley (Voiced By Phil Harris) Who Introduces Himself Through Song...
youtube
And I Just Love Phil Harris Singing In These Movies No Matter What Character He Plays...
Offering To Guide Her And The Kittens Back To Paris, They Hitchhike On The Back Of A Milk Cart Until They're Chased Off By The Rude Driver...
Later, While Crossing A Railroad Trestle, They Narrowly Avoid An Oncoming Train But Marie Falls Into The River Only To Be Saved By Thomas, Who Gets Rescued By 2 Geese, Amelia And Abigail, Who Are On Their Way To Paris Themselves To Find Their Uncle Waldo...
Meanwhile, Edgar Realizes That Without His Hat And Umbrella, There's A Chance He Could Be Incriminated, So, He Returns To The Country To Get Them Back From Napoleon And Lafayette Who Give Him Some Slight Difficulty...
Eventually Reaching Paris, The Geese Find Their Drunk Uncle And Go Home With Him As Thomas, Duchess And The Kittens Take To The Rooftops Of Paris Until They Land In The Pad Of Thomas's Friend, Scat Cat (Played By Dick From The Shining) And His Gang Of Cats Who Are All Of Different Nationalities...
And Yes, There Is A Chinese Cat...
Which Leads To The Next Song, Which Just So Happens To Be My Favorite Of The Entire Movie...
youtube
After Scat Cat And His Band Depart, The Kittens Go To Bed As Thomas And Duchess' Spend The Evening On The Rooftop, With Thomas Wondering If Duchess' Would Like To Stay And Be With Him, But Her Loyalty To The Madame Forces Her To Turn Him Down...
As She Knows The Madame Misses Them And That She Loves Them...
Secretly Listening In, The Kittens Are Happy To Go Home But They're More Upset That They Have To Say Goodbye To Thomas....
The Next Morning, Duchess' And The Kittens Make It Back To The Mansion As Thomas Departs After Him And Duchess' Have A Moment. But When Edgar Sees Them, He Captures Them And Places Them In A Sack Which He Briefly Places In The Oven Before Placing Them In A Box For Timbuktu...
But Roquefort Finds Thomas And Tells Him About Duchess' And The Kittens, To Which He Goes Back To The Mansion To Fight Edgar While Roquefort Goes To Get Scat Cat And His Gang...
After Telling Them That O'Malley Sent Him, Scat Cat And His Gang Go To Help Thomas As Roquefort Frees Duchess' And The Kittens As Frou Frou Kicks Edgar Inside The Trunk Which Is Shipped To Timbuktu...
With Thomas Becoming Part Of The Family...
Madame Rewrites Her Will To Exclude Edgar, Remaining Ignorant To The Real Reason He Disappeared And Establishing A Foundation To House The Stray Cats Of Paris As We Get A Reprise Of Everybody Wants To Be A Cat To Wrap The Film Up...
youtube
And That's The Aristocats, And It's A Good Film...
The Story Is Pretty Interesting, Eva Gabor, Phil Harris And Scatman Crothers Do Well In Their Roles And I Love The Film's Songs. Some People Believe This Film To Be Completely Forgettable And That It's Just Cats Being All Cute But Seriously They Have No Clue What They're Talking About As It's A Fun Movie And I Definitely Say See It...
Now, This Week There Will Be No Duke Reviews Xtra Review For The Next 2 Weeks As I Need A Break To Prepare For Our Annual Monsterween Programming ...
However, Next Week We Will Be Looking At Robin Hood On Here So...
Till Then, This Is Duke, Signing Off...
