41: We don’t kill the gays here but… best death/near death scene?

I love a good death scene, I just typically hate them in gay media because it’s such a classic crap plot point. They kill the gays because the gays cannot be happy, ever. 🙄 Thankfully that is (kinda) changing in non queer focused media, and is pretty rare in QLs. But that doesn’t stop me from thinking some death scenes are really perfect in my macabre lil brain.

Korn & Intouch - Until We Meet Again

I feel like this is such an OG death scene, I remember when I watched UWMA for the first time and their deaths were in the very first episode, within the first fifteen minutes of the episode! I sat straight up, complete shock on my face. Like I knew the story was about reincarnation and the red string of fate, but I did not expect it to happen that quickly. And my god, Kao and Earth left me absolutely breathless with their performances.

Wei Wuxian - The Untamed

I will once again claim the a censored BL still counts lol, but yeah, Wei Wuxian’s death scene was magnificent. It’s one of the few times I thought the series did the scene better than the books did, I think mostly because his death scene wasn’t as important in the books as what Lan Wangji did to try and save him from his death was. It was dramatic in its own way, how Wei Wuxian had no memory of the lengths the Lan Wangji went to save him from his clan elders looking for him after the fight. Considering the series was censored, I guess Lan Wangji fighting off half of the Lan clan to protect Wei Wuxian was too gay lol, but I loved what they did in the series. I love how Wei Wuxian’s death wasn’t just on screen, but it was a big ass dramatic slow motion scene. Gorgeous, just perfect.

Phaya - The Sign

The idiot didn’t listen to the monk, Tharn or any of us yelling at the screen about him to stay away from the water! Lowkey he kinda had it coming, and even though it was obvious he wasn’t actually going to die, it was a great scene and follow up episode.

Team - Between Us

Swimming alone at night without any spotters or lifeguards or even telling anyone where you are is the height of stupidity, so it not stretching before going into the water, especially considering Team’s background and what had happened to his childhood best friend. And yet, it happened, and we live for the drama. I’m glad that Boun and Prem were allowed so much say in the characters, considering the book and screenplay were being written around the same time. Because it was Boun that decided that Win would never punch Team, no matter how scared he was. Which is what happened in the book btw, the fact that they were allowed to change things and give input really helped sell the absolute terror of Team’s second near death.

Myungha - Love For Love’s Sake

Okay, so technically he’s ‘dead’ the whole ass time, and is just being shown what he could have if he decide to go back and live his life the way he should’ve opposed to how he did. Ignoring the people around him, wallowing in his own agony, never reaching out, etc. But when you finally see him die, how he died in his original life it was just gorgeous. Painful and sad but so beautifully shot and acted, I loved how he when he met the angel of death he slowly became more and more damp as he remembered walking into the lake, but was wearing his school uniform again instead of the suit he died in. It was a fantastic visual of being caught between life and death, also whilst being surrounded by complete darkness yet standing in a spotlight before his Sunbae dressed in all white. Just *chefs kiss* perfect!

Got some interesting asks last night; not gonna publish them as the person who sent me them asked me not to--they were a system who just wanted to vent out some frustrations and I respect that!--but the TL;DR summary is that they were frustrated that "syscourse" even at its theoretical best, even when all the people involved are 'pro-all systems' or label themselves 'endo-friendly spaces,' is something that's still often used as a cudgel to hurt others. And you know-- I'm honestly pretty damn inclined to agree. Syscoursers from a subcultural stance often can't separate themselves in diction and approach from its hyper-aggressive roots, and any attempt at discussion without meticulously unpacking that history falls flat. From a perspective more familiar to most of my followers, it would be like if therians ran around calling themselves "grillers" without disentangling the digital hazing history that went alongside the term and drove so many people away. It's a lack of introspection and an inability to reckon with the iron-spiked, saw-bladed foundations all the way down.

And seeing self-described syscoursers on one specific post essentially try to spin their unsuccessful, grayrocked attempt at confrontation and dogpiling as them being censored and silenced just proves this point to me further, since they're simultaneously claiming to at the same time be in favor of supporting discussion and education while having started off initially so aggressive and seemingly bad-faith. You can't set a bridge on fire and then howl fury when other people refuse to cross it, especially not when you've specifically positioned yourself in the scenario as an individual who intends to foster helpful conversations. You can't come in swinging and then complain that they started it and you only wanted to help! And if they hadn't positioned themselves in that way, jumping up on the pedestal to claim that they only want to have civil conversations and surely others who deny them that are censoring them and bad/wrong/etc WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY looking to be picking a fight rather than a genuine civil conversation, then this would be a different discussion to have-- but, well. I'd be lying if I said it didn't remind me of certain anti-otherkin tactics I'd seen in the past, with people batting their eyelashes and assuring otherkin that they weren't sealioning, it was all just innocent questions about such a stupid identity-- oh sorry, did they say stupid? They meant "interesting," teehee, don't mind them. They're just here to listen and be logical. """Logic""" which usually involves punching down in a way that isn't logical and is more just an excuse to be an asshole and tear into someone.

There's a reason I don't posit myself as someone who intends to always single-handedly foster perfectly civil, moderated, respectful discussions in my discourse posts in the same way, say, Rani (a-dragons-explanation) does. Because I know that when I get pissed, I bite! I'm cognizant of that fact, that I don't have perfect self-restraint and sometimes I come across way harsher than is necessary (even on occasions where harshness might theoretically be warranted, because deserved is not the same as necessary). And I am also aware that discourse is a separate animal from discussion, in the same way grilling is different from an AMA. Sure, they might be technically synonymous on a dictionary level, but in practice they are vastly different. And that applies here, too, even though I've seen syscoursers claiming that they are the exact same.

But this is getting away from me. -chinhands- I guess that I'm disappointed but ultimately not surprised that syscourse is fundamentally nonproductive, and that it too often devolves into dehumanizing others, either through outright arguments around personhood or just through preemptively making people out to be significantly more malicious than they actually are, because within the subculture due to a variety of factors, malice and cruelty is assumed to inherently be much more common than ignorance. And people are also much less forgiving of the latter, even if they claim otherwise. But seeing this happen has given me some perspective on things in the subcultures I frequent and in my own tendencies with some topics, and is making me rethink the ways I communicate with others and what the intended goals of those communications with larger audiences are versus how it can go off the rails, which I think is really helpful, even if it's coming inadvertently from such a noxious source.

Absolutely cannot wait until the day we see even a teeny tiny lil bit if Dante's backstory. Given how there are multiple factions with magic-adjacent tatoos, I wonder if Dante has anything similar, where even a peek of their skin would be enough to know entirely too much about them - like their former identity. Or perhaps it is there to further some part of Dante's development, good or bad. Or simply just make them seem more androgynous as well making it hard to tell their age, both things would help for hiding an identity for an extended period of time.

Additionally, when they first wake up in the forest [I think it was in D corp? Something about the trailer] and as their name on the UI still says 'Me', the place in which the word 'Manager' would soon be instead had three squares, the same ones used to censor anything else they say that we shall not yet know of - like how the word 'Aspect' seems to be replaced by six squares in their first line. This then leads me to two conclusions.

1] The organisation of which they first belonged is either a three letter word or a three letter acronym in a place of high authority, as where one would assume the word 'aspect' to be in the text keeps the same number of boxes as there are letters within the word. As of such, these should be noted if any creep up in any upcoming intervallos or cantos - especially any regarding the Head - but to make a guess, if the theory of them being part of the Head holds true, perhaps they held the role of 'Eye' or similar. The three squares are also later used in the context of a location, so perhaps they worked in a certain sect or office.

Plus there's the line from Lion regarding how what their master has planned technically isn't breaking any taboos of the City - this may then relate to how Dante turning back the clock is technically not breaking the Head's rules on reviving people, namely that it's very illegal. But does this then imply that their master has some affiliation with Limbus company? The three beasts [as I've taken to calling them] make no reaction at the sight of the sinners, so presumably not any of them, and they wear clothes with Iori's theming as well as being told by Vergie to report back to the serpent, which is more evidence in favour of Iori being part of LCs inner workings. Though this does present the question of her hypothetical endgame,but that can wait til another time.

2] I believe Dante's head has a self-censor in some of their thoughts, or at least has some effect on what exactly they think. The info about three and six-squares obviously is important, and presumably why exactly Dante had to get memory-wiped, but as they talk about it before their name reads 'Dante' I do worry about if they even remember it. Will we have any more moments of Dante's nametag going back to 'Me' where they're just an asshat for a bit then remember none of it? Their ability to only talk with the sinners may have also been planned with this in mind, to limit their options of conversational partners to only those they can't ask unwanted questions around, and to at least delay them getting back that information for an unknown purpose.

dantes censoring can also be seen in the observation logs (mostly those written by heathecliff). dante has also started being a bit sneaky and hiding information about how their memory retention works and what lies beyond the mirror doors. personally, i think the censoring is an engrained habit and that if shits bad enough theyll break out of it. from how im interpreting it... maybe its not that they need to actually censor those words. maybe its more show that concealment is a large part of their character.

Lore Dump: Anti-Magic

I think I've Faceless proofed this place. Not that I think he's going to try anything after how last time went, but better safe than sorry. I don't want him rooting through my story notes or something. He sure trashed this place, I waited too long to go into battle mode. Just wasn't expecting him to just come barging right in like that! Ugh, this is why I wanted to kill him off, even I can't predict him sometimes.

Also, I really need to phase out these Lore Dumps considering technically he can hear them too, so I'm kind of just handing information to him. Plus anyways, after this one you'll have all the basics down. I still need to do one on Hekatos, his history alone is enough to fill a lore dump. Sorry, "histories," I guess technically he has more than one.

(Now that I think about it, do I need a lore dump about angels? Or maybe about The Big Loop? Eh, I'm sure it'll come up in the story, so I'll spare you that for now.)

Anyways, anti-magic! It's the "magic" of mortals, wielded almost exclusively by those that lack the divine spark. If magic is the power to take pen to paper, anti-magic is the power to flail the paper at your enemies hoping you'll inflict paper cuts.

To get an idea on what the heck I'm even talking about, imagine stirring a pot of liquid. The energy you put into your arm, the intent you put into that energy, the motions you make with the spoon, all come together to make a mini-cyclone within the pot. This is often considered in many cultures very minor anti-magic. You're manipulating what already exists to get a powerful reaction. Same goes for striking a match to create a flame, or stepping on the pedal of the car to make it go faster. It's action and reaction.

Now imagine that on a multiversal scale and you have the power of anti-magic.

Unlike magic which is very controlled and has strict rules on how it works, the only rules in anti-magic is what you bring into it. It reflects the rules you add. Because of this, it makes using it kind of difficult as most people are bound by the rules of their reality.

That being said, there are a number of creatures in these wide wide multiverses that can use anti-magic naturally. Some examples include

1. Minutians

2. Spectators

3. Demons

4. Conduits, Freeholders, and Splicers

5. The Pig at the Center of Everything

6. *REDACTED*

...wait, they can censor me? That's alarming...

AHEM, let's talk about minutians.

In the analogy I used earlier, I mentioned sending energy into your arm to stir the pot. Try to imagine every motion you make, every action you take as you flowing energy through your body and sending it out into your environment. You're sending energy from your arm into the spoon, into the pot. The energy minutians wield is a physical embodiment of that, manifesting in anti-magic. Truly skilled minutians can even turn that energy into wind, fire, or even void. Their ability to flow their energy through the body of their opponents can even block magic at its source. Of course, you know all this already.

Spectators are basically well, you. You reading this. Outsiders like you have way more of an effect than you realize. For example, say you're a reader and you leave a comment somewhere saying "I'm looking forward to seeing how vampires work in this lore." My Earth counterpart in your multiverse could see it and be like "Oh crap, I don't have a chapter explaining that yet," then suddenly an event pops up where Lexine gets a chance to explain the blood market and stuff. Cause and effect. Not to mention, ideas could be funneled into our neck of the woods. Like any references to your modern culture that seem out of place, or the fact Christianity exists (though not in Sanctuary.) It's anti-magic that allows all that to happen.

Next up are the demons. The way they utilize their anti-magic is very unique because they utilize the power of belief. If they believe something, truly believe in it, then it can come true. Sometimes reality will bend to their whims. They can create tools and weapons that shouldn't work, and in the hands of non-demons won't work, but the demon makes it work through pure willpower. There are many subsets of demons, and considering they are hiding in Multiverse B, I'm not sure if you'll even get a chance to meet any this time around. Well, except of course for *REDACTED*

Damnit, see what I mean? They won't even let me talk about them because they don't even believe in the truth I'm about to exposit!

Conduits, Freeholders, and Splicers won't be relevant to you. They come up much MUCH later on in a very different story in The Great Loop. Could be years or even decades before that story is told. Not to mention, it would take too long to explain them, so I'm not going to bother here. (Unless if you're from the future where I have written that story, then hello there! Hope you're liking Sanctuary of the Odd!)

The Pig at the Center of Everything is basically an eldritch abomination floating in the nothing. It originally came from Multiverse G, but it was kicked out by the version of me that runs that joint. Because it exists outside our multiverses, it has the abilities of a spectator, but because it's technically a creation of mine, it can still cross over into this reality. That is assuming it can find a proper way in.

Hmmm, just over 900 words... Oh! There is one more thing I can fill the page w- I mean, one more thing I can talk about! Anti-magic actually does have its own counterpart to the gods.

At the end of Multiverse A, just before the Final Timeline broke off to become Multiverse B, a greater demon named Ewe, the original forger of the Void Sword, went through a miraculous transformation. With the blessing from a piece of Hekatos' lost magic, they ascended to become the first and last demon lord. Their first action as their new self was to enter the final timeline and be a true threat to the gods.

However, when they transformed, they set the rules in which all demon lords would ascend, and with the cyclical nature of Multiverse A, it always became the rule. In order someone to become a demon lord, they must meet the requirements of each of their fingers:

Right Hand:

Thumb: Must not possess divine magic.

Index: Must be able to manipulate anti-magic in some form.

Middle: Must have convinced others to betray hard coded beliefs.

Ring: Must not be attracted to the opposite sex and must not identify as the sex that was assigned at birth.

Pinky: Must not have biological progeny.

Left Hand: 

Pinky: Must make a sacrifice of blood.

Ring: Must not be conceived from both a man and a woman.

Middle: Must bring the downfall of a leader with a birthright.

Index: Must have an indomitable self-worth, but still face reality.

Thumb: Must have the blessing of a former god.

Demon lords are pinnacles of self and individuality. By design they oppose established order and fight for a new order that more fits their ideals, for better or for worse.

As implied, you don't even need to be a demon to become a demon lord. You'll become part demon upon ascending. Whatever anti-magic you were using before will be amplified and advanced, and you'll gain demon belief magic on top of that.

That's the thing, no real person acts like they do in fairy tales, they have agendas, goals, plans. Meeting of the Drones, part 1

This is a voice log between The Admiral and The Scientist. Both parties have agreed to share this voice log to provide transparency for our investors. The exact names of the members in the call have been censored for privacy.

The Admiral: So, [The Scientist]. I see you’ve taken the time to interrupt me, so I hope this is important. To what do I owe the pleasure?

The Scientist: Well, I hope I wasn’t interrupting something.

The Admiral: No, but my time is valuable. So, what do you wish to talk about?

The Scientist: Well, I wanted to discuss the new satellite program, and work some things out, and just have someone to talk to about this.

The Admiral: Alright. What about it?

The Scientist: Well, to start, I think that we should discuss who should inherit the program.

The Admiral: You think we’re going to keep it?

The Scientist: At this point, it’s almost indispensable! It replaces the old waypoint system and allows for worldwide transportation. Not to mention being able to track progress of all types! It’s only been tested half the worlds by now, but it’s proving its worth every time!

The Admiral: Alright… so why are you talking to me about it? Wouldn’t you get it due to being surveyy and sciencey?

The Scientist: Oh no, I think you should get it. After all, it’s just an addon to Crates at the end of the day. I would imagine as the person responsible for Corporation’s fleets, you should get it!

The Admiral: You think I have the time and patience to manage that?

The Scientist: Isn’t that what sub-board members are for? Such as your Harbor Master?

The Admiral: You’re right. I’ll take it, I guess. So, what exactly are these benefits that these satellites provide? I was pretty sure that they were useless.

The Scientist: And what makes you think that?!?

The Admiral: When I was with the Founders as they looked at the technology years ago, before the Corporation got started. They were always buffering, and never gave the full picture.

The Scientist: Well, I can assure you that those problems don’t exist anymore. From what I understand, they may have even been looking at a different model entirely. At the very least, they were looking at an old one. It has none of those problems.

The Admiral: Alright, then what exactly has it done well then?

The Scientist: Well, for one, it has revolutionized C8H, especially thanks to it replacing the waypoint system. Well, not exactly, but…

The Admiral: Explain.

The Scientist: Well, with the old waypoint system, the workers had to wait at a drone pole and wait for drones to take them to other drone poles, like waiting for a taxi or personal bus. It was annoying. However, with proper satellite mapping, we can go ahead and reprogram the drones, giving them the ability to pick up people from anywhere and drop them off anywhere they wish!

The Admiral: That makes sense… I’m also going to assume the satellites were at least partially responsible for C8H tripling in size as well?

The Scientist: Yes. It was the first world that we tried it on, and we realized that there were areas far away that pertained to the fallen civilizations. So, we decided to go ahead and get the grants necessary to expand out towards that area. A shame for the work we did previously, but oh well! You’re not mad about it, are you?

The Admiral: I know that [The Introvert] wasn’t happy about it, at least in the meeting. I don’t particularly care though.

The Scientist: Well, what do you think? Just asking.

The Admiral: Sighs. I’m more neutral about it. I don’t care much for [The Introvert]’s whining. If we have to fill bigger caves, so be it. I do have to worry about the majority of the territory being wilderness though. That just makes the work longer and more tedious and skews the progress percentage.

The Scientist: Its technically the completion percentage…

The Admiral: We’re going to have a vote on that, and you know who’s winning. Better switch while you can. Anyways, you said half were tested with this thing. What other results were used from this.

The Scientist: Well, there’s also the Default Project! We’ve been able to find so many different locations thanks to it, and we might be able to map out a much more accurate comp… progress percentage system thanks to it! We’re not removing the old system, rather just having it only compose half of the percentage and have the locations mark the other 50%! And of course, for getting around. We’ll probably keep the waypoint system for oil deposits though.

The Admiral: Very nice. Anything else?

The Scientist: Well, there’s MazeRun but… Mmm… I… think we should discuss this later.

The Admiral: Oh? How so?

The Scientist: It brought up some… complications. It’s been useful for finding and scouting out a terrorist organization, but it also revealed some things that might skew things even more than even C8H.

The Admiral: Should the investors be notified?

The Scientist: I think that we should let the supervisor have some input into this first. The situation is complicated anyways.

The Admiral: Right. So, I presume that is all?

The Scientist: For now. I think I might call you later when we test it out on the other worlds.

The Admiral: The Shattered Isles and the Storytime Dimension you mean.

         AMITY HAIR OHMIGOD IT LOOKS SO ADORABLE SHE’S SELF-ACTUALIZING I AM FUCKING SCREAMING HOLY SHIT OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD OH MY GOD, it’s PINK and not green… They acknowledged it, Emira did! And they CHANGED IT I AM LOSING MY FUCKING MIND OVER THIS-

         She looks so BEAUTIFUL and I love the kind of foreshadowing with the bookends of our first shot of Amity having her hair down, and now it’s changed! I was resigned to not much of them but HELL YEAH they’re being good siblings and we get a look at their rooms, we see them doing MAKEOVERS together this is everything from my favorite fanon content and MORE,

         Also Edric has a date?! Emira says ‘their’ mom… Unless the Golden Guard has a mom, DARN! Not gonna lie, I half-expected a big twist at the end that Edric was dating the Golden Guard, who was doing some sort of reconnaissance as his unrecognized normal self and/or screwing around with the Blights even further, but in a GENUINE sense… But then who knows Kikimora could be posing as GG’s ‘mom’, this is a stretch anyhow-

         JUST HELL YEAH Blight Twins! Blight Twins being sweet and mischievous and supportive of each other, Blight SIBLINGS being siblings, Emira being an older sister and giving advice! And AMITY, Amity mentioning how much Luz has changed stuff, I love that they acknowledge it openly how her life has completely shifted, and now… NOW…!

         No necklace! Red leggings! PINK HAIR?! Is this why Amity in the intro hasn’t been updated yet… She was getting TWO updates, so the animators decided to only animate a change after this final update?!

         King and Gus are also friends it seems, and they even recorded some fun together! I’m surprised at how much Bria and the others mock Gus’ illusion skills… Obviously Belos is kinda terrible but like; I don’t think he’d set aside an entire subset of magic into Illusions without reason! Also that nightmare trip… I LOVE IT, I love Gus applying the creativity of illusions in their ability to completely warp and distort someone’s sense of reality! And I called that dragon-thing being an illusion!

         A graveyard… I wonder if the Gallderstones (is that how it’s spelled) have any relevance or if they’re just neat? I hope Mattholomule and Gus help hide the Looking Glass Graveyard… Damn, that’s another Death reference with Gus, huh! Is it culminating in his respect for the dead, or will it continue further with Gus being a necromancer, or an Oracle who can commune with the deceased, and he has their respect as someone who treats them properly?!

         Also not to get dark but… What if all those Illusionists are dead because of Belos? I’m JUST SAYING…! And not gonna lie, every time someone insulted Illusions, I kept imagining the Illusion Head just suddenly waking up and feeling like there’s a disturbance in the force, as well as a weird compulsion to beat up some Glandus kids. It’d be even funnier if he had beef with the Construction, Plant, and Abomination Heads as well!

         Speaking of which, more confirmation on Construction Magic being related to earth! Glad to see Bria give us a look into that, which furthers my idea of Belos using construction magic… Also dang, Bria and the Glandus Kids really are the parallels/foils to the Detention kids! You’ve got the short ‘nice’ girl, the tall lanky kid, the furry… But the Glandus Kids start off looking nice and cool, but turn out to be rather nasty!

         Meanwhile the Detention Kids seem like bad news and delinquents, but no! They’re just demonized and actually very kind and chill! The Detention Kids are looked down upon, the Glandus Kids are appraised… The Detention Kids are dual-track, the Glandus Kids are singular; Glandus Kids from, well, GLANDUS, Detention Kids from Hexside… One’s ‘mischief’ is actually very neat and cool, the other’s is literal grave robbing.

         I guess that’s how the bleeding statues got past the censors- It’s technically just an illusion! Also more insight into how Glandus works with its Survival of the Fittest mentality, I wonder if we’ll get confirmation on which coven heads came from there, how that might influence them as adults…

         What is Glandus like, is it more whole-heartedly accepting of Belos’ rule, hence its harsh ideals? Was it made after Hexside? Does Bump hate it for being so cruel like that, or is it just school bias? And dang poor Mattholomule, I always had a feeling he sort of felt and knew that he wasn’t much, so he accepted and compensated by deliberately doing whatever he can for power…

         They confirmed he’s from Glandus, and I appreciate this new look at him! This new leaf turned… Hot take but he’s honestly not as bad as Boscha, his stint with Gus was a one-time thing that Gus was able to live with! And that seems pretty good to set them up as friends! Speaking of Boscha, Willow was injured by pixies? And the last time we heard of pixies, they belonged to Boscha and caused the school to get shut down… Did BOSCHA DO THIS I SWEAR SHE IS DEAD TO ME-

         (Also she’s mentioned in the credits for this episode but I don’t remember hearing her? I might’ve gotten distracted with so much other things.)

         Gus! I like the insight into his relationship with Illusions, and I appreciate how he’s considering other forms of magic… But this hesitation might just serve to reaffirm his believe in Illusions, which is okay! It’s all about choice… And yeah, it seems Gus also has a case of impostor syndrome like King, no wonder they get along so well! I love the glimpses into Gus’ house and the confirmation that he has a library card, no Perry though alas…!

         I appreciate how Gus feels overlooked, like he has no real substance, which is how his Illusions reflect a desire to draw attention, but also the idea that there’s nothing real beneath them… Again, very much like King! And Gus, he’s not a powerhouse like the rest, he’s SKILLED and smart, but strength isn’t his forte, it’s not brute force he operates on, but cleverness! Trickery, I like it…! It’s a nice callback to his last A-plot episode, SVSF, where instead of fighting Mattholomule physically, Gus’ solution is to think outside the box and pull the alarm!

         You go kid, not relying on brute strength but showing that some clever tricks and thinking are just as valid! Kinda wonder if this episode is lowkey a discussion on masculinity for young boys, especially with Gus growing older with puberty, though the latter is mostly because his actual VA grew… But maybe the writers rolled with that and incorporated it, or it’s just a very neat coincidence! Also, it is me or did Mattholomule’s voice change? And the gag that Gavin’s dad looks identical to him, even moreso because he’s NOT supposed to have a moustache… That’s great!

         Malphas! Love this reference to a classic demon, I wasn’t sure if Malphas was the librarian with glasses whom I’ve always headcanoned as a father figure to Amity… But maybe it’s actually this bird dude! He seems adept in Bard magic, and I love the reveal of his true crow appearance… Guess those theorists were right that the one-eyed figure is from the Forbidden Stacks! Also Malphas NOT COOL with Amity, but I’m glad Luz changed his mind, and I wonder how that adventure looked…

         Which- DAMN, the RSD with Luz! She looks so UTTERLY BROKEN when Amity mentions doing stupid things, and she didn’t mean it like that, but Luz just looks so completely shattered and you can tell she wants to cry but instead she bottles it up and tries to take it in stride, and that plays into her trying to overcompensate for her mistakes AGAIN… SOMEONE GET IT TO HER HEAD that she doesn’t need to! I’m scared for Luz, and I was SO scared this episode would end on a bad note…

         BUT DOAHLDdFAEONDKFHN LUMITY KISS LUMITY KISS! ONE-SIDED BUT THEY FINALLY FUCKING KNOW AND AMITY IS LIKE WHAAAAT AND I WAS WAITING FOR IT AND I COULD FEEL IT HAPPEN AND GAY KISS! GAY KISS ON-SCREEN!!! And the way Luz just FLOPS to the ground on her knees AAHJJFFKHGGK and no Alador nor Odalia to ruin this, UTTERLY PERFECT and the twins WATCHING OOOHHHHGGGG YYYEEAAAAHHH-

         This is EVERYTHING I ever wanted!

         What an AMAZING episode with wonderful characer beats and reveals! Again, Amity’s growth as a character, that brief insight into how Luz as a person is very chaotic and sometimes frustrating for Amity and forces her to reevaluate, but ultimately it’s good and Luz DOES try her best, and Amity clearly wanted to make things up for Luz and apologize, they’re BOTH doing things, just the little moments!

         Also, Alex Lawther voices Philip Wittebane! He has long hair and a vaguely british accent, he’s… He’s Belos isn’t he? And they got a new VA because having him voiced by Matthew Rhys would be really spoiler-y right? He’s got the long hair and he’s a nerd… And with how he talks of finding a way back home, maybe Belos really DOES just want to return home, after all? He talks of making a way back home…

         And we see a glimpse of the Portal, so it might’ve brought him there? Or did Philip succeed in making it, and that was his blueprint designs? Did he arrive by Titan’s Blood? What happened to the portal if it brought him there, or if he made it? Why the scar, why near Eda’s house, partially buried?

         Was it lost before he could finish his work, and Philip got side-tracked into something else… Perhaps going on a crusade, on behalf of a curse/demon that possessed him? A demon that killed King’s father…? Was the portal broken and he had to discard it, but then it naturally healed- Or did it just need to recharge, maybe Philip DID make it back home, WHAT IS THE ANSWER?! Is there some sort of doppelganger for Philip, is BELOS his doppelganger?! What is THIS WHAT-

ok i am kinda curious about bakugou's linguistics just straight up... how much does he *actually swear* in comparison to just being edgy? i know japanese and swear words are kinda weird. i think "kuso" is the most common thing to come out of his mouth as a 'swear' but that can also just mean like "crap" right? Japanese swear words are kinda weird.

So are English swear words though. Which is kind of important to this context.

English-speakers tend to think of swear words in terms of words you're not allowed to say as a child or words that would be censored on the radio/network TV or words that would garner a PG rating in a film. This is a very...Puritan concept. American, western, what-not.

Things don't exactly work like that in all languages. Those rating systems only came into existence in the late 20th century. Words that are extremely rude in one English-speaking country could be considered not so bad in another.

And then there's Japan. (nsfw link: vulgar language (see? even our concepts of "nsfw" can be different))

There's this phenomenon in second-language classes, especially when the students are younger, where people get their hands on a translation dictionary and immediately look up all the swear words. The problem is, what are you actually translating? "Crap" has a literal meaning that can be translated into other languages, but which word has the same vulgar context as the word "crap” in English (you know, as opposed to the word "poop")?

I haven’t lived in Japan for an extended period of time, so I can’t speak to this, but I don’t get the impression that there’s as big an obsession over there with swear words. That is, I don’t know how common it is for people to be punished for using a particular word because of its vulgar meaning. It’s faaaaar ruder to speak to someone with a rude speech pattern than to say a vulgar word.

So the first answer to your question is that Bakugou does swear. He says “kuso” a lot. But honestly, I’m trying to think of words in Japanese that might count as swear words as you’ve described them...and there aren’t many to begin with.

What you’re considering “edgy/rude” is...a lot closer to what vulgarity actually is in Japanese. You may have heard words like “teme” and “kisama” translated as swear words, but technically these are all just words that mean “you” with varying degrees of rudeness. The translations you read of these words change them to “bastard” or “asshole” or whatever because you speak English. That’s how they can translate to you the context of what is being said.

So that’s why a lot of Bakugou’s canon lines have vulgarities thrown in occasionally. It’s not that there’s a word being directly translated that means “damn” or “bastard,” it’s that these English words give you a better idea of how he sounds in Japanese. There isn’t a Japanese word for “ain’t,” yet it’s slang that might better capture the tone of a particular line. Things like that.

In a sense, Bakugou does swear every other word. That’s because he may speak a full sentence in a rude grammar pattern. Many of the words in that pattern will be chosen or conjugated to be rude in Japanese.

You know that relatively recent meme where people will be like:

I love this meme because honestly this is a lot closer to what Japanese is like. (Maybe that’s the source of the meme? I don’t know.) A lot of Bakugou’s canon speech just comes with a [derogatory] tag, basically.

Amphibia-The Hardest Thing Recap

The hardest thing is saying goodbye. Spoilers below.

The episode begins with the core, still alive, flying off to the moon to drive it into the planet. It would rather kill all life on Amphibia than die. Valeriana pops up, after being gone all of season three. She uses the box to give Sasha and Marcy powers. So the three fly up and fight the moon.

It starts out so easy, the whole thing feels like a victory lap. But Sasha and Marcy are still new to this and start to burn out. Mother Olm warns Anne that using the true power of the stones would kill her, but she does it anyway. And ANdrias smashes his crown, killing the last bit of the core. Anne blows up the moon and she turns to dust. It’s only been ten minutes!

But before dying the entity behind the stones copies her mind and brings it to wherever it is. I guess that means the Anne we end the series with is technically a clone. Not a huge fan of that. The entity takes the form of a computer but when Anne quips that it’s an old one so it takes the form of Domino. It pulls a Kami and asks Anne to take it’s place since she saved the world. Anne points out she’s a dumb 13-year-old, or 2-minute-old. So the Entity decides to check in when she dies again.

Anne is sent back with just enough power to get the girls home. All the girls get heartfelt goodbyes with their respective amphibian families. And the girls go and the box turns to dust.

We jump ten years later, we get to see Polly as a proper frog! Yunan and Olivia are a couple. I was worried that the hand holding during their goodbye to Marcy but it feels more organic putting it here. Andrias is helping restore the environment he destroyed. And he’s chained up to show he is a prisoner. The frogs of Wartwood put up a statue of Anne. Would have done that earlier but it’s a good moment.

Back on Earth, Sasha has become a child psychologist or a teacher and Marcy makes a webcomic. I am kinda of bummed that the calamity trio drifted apart during high school. I get that it ties in to the themes of accepting change and not holding on but wasn’t separating them from their frog family enough? It’s mediated by skipping that part and jumping to them reunited for Anne’s 23rd birthday.

And Sasha’s bi! Good for her. It’s weirdly small. Maybe Matt had trouble getting in or couldn’t fit it in organically. Or it could have been trouble with the censors. It seems like you need to pre-plan this stuff to a ridiculous degree to get it in. No shipping for the girls. While I was partial to Anne/Marcy, I’m fine with them focusing on the friendship.  

Anne meanwhile had become a herpetologist and the frog lady at the aquarium.

That was a wild ride. It was nice to see the show grow on to its own and see the fandom explode once Marcy was introduced. I am sad to see the lore heavy adventure shows that I cut my teeth writing about for this blog go away though. Adventure Time ushered in a wonderful age of animation and it’s bittersweet to see it slowly be replaced by slice of life shows. Not that those slice of life shows are bad, Creig of the Creek, Big City Greens, and The Ghost and Molly Mcgee are wonderful shows, but will miss shows like Amphibia and Owl House, which is wrapping up soon.

Although this episode gets a ¾ the series as a whole gets 4/4.

Fascinating. They usually cut jealousy scenes to a minimum or don't show at all even in pure BL genre, like Lan Wangji (esp Wen Ning thing) or Shen Wei being extremely possessive, bc it can't be explained by brotherhood in their opinion. It's also the reason it was cut from Ultimate. So why here suddenly add scenes like that and with such heavy focus is a mystery, since you've said it's not in the novel. It's not even reasonable jealousy, its just straight up "cant touch my piece of pizza" stuff

Hmm... never thought about it. LOL in the anime the kept LZ being jealous of Wen Ning though xD. Idk in "Sleuth of the Ming" they made a whole open scene out of it. What I've noticed is that their censorship always works differently, and some choices never cease to surprise me, as in who decides what's ok and whats not, bc idk... I understand that stuff like dying for each other, touching, staring can be by many seen as a touching bromance technically, I mean I've seen many ppl watching even cencored BL and being completely oblivious. But there are sometimes some stuff included, that I personally do not get how it can be interpreted as "close friends" and how it passed the censorship. And I do not mean here sucking out poisons, for example (bc I would've done this for my close friends if they were in danger haha).

I'm just judging from the point of view of like me and my sister being very close to the point of a person on the street asking us if we're lesbians lmao (I like still don't get where it came from, hand holding?xD). As I've said before, I guess I see why some ppl who don't have close friends or family would consider some closeness as romantic (since both close bros and couple do some things like spooning for example), but anyone who like saw idk bts members or have a super close bestie or sibling might know that hugging each other to sleep, wearing their clothes or feeding them a jelly bean if their hands are busy doesn't always mean you have any romance there going on, speaking from my expierience, so I just have different view on this "gay stuff vs bro stuff". (like to me the afterlife pingxie scene is actually gayer than any touching they've done, bc like why he didn't see his family or iron triangle whole if they all bros). It's just there are a LOOOT of things that can be indeed considered bro stuff technically (they might not be, but they could), but there is some stuff that just cannot be explained by we're bros, thats all. And this kind of jealousy is one of them.

Bc like a bit of jealousy like "my bestie wanted to go skating with their lover instead of me, so I'm upset we don't spend as much time together" can exist, but if you have problems with someone hitting on your friend, checking him out or even touching him and you don't want them to date anybody, that's another thing, that just means you wanna date them. Wu Xie can hug Fatty to sleep and they can slap each other's butts like me and my sis, but he'd never be jealous seeing someone flirting with him or smth. You know what I mean here? So I get why it's in most situations considered not censorship appropriate and it's cut.

But the most funny thing about the "him being unreasonably jealous" added scenes is the fact that like they actually chose to make him being absurdly jealous. Bc for example in the first version of the scene, Pangzi was trying to dance with Xiaoge, thats why Wu Xie got all worked up:

it was at least somewhat understandable. But in the actual scene from the drama they went and for some reason changed it. Xiaoge pulled Pangzi in, bc he lost direction while being blind, but it was still Pangzi who got reprimanded for that at the end lmao

so it just became even more hilarious, bc Pangzi just grazed him, he didn't even do anything, so I was like will this guy just calm the fuck down, but no, he kept going lolz

I'm just surprised about some of their deliberate choices I guess. So I agree, weird it is.

But Reboot in general was weird, when it comes to the rollercoaster of their choices lmao. They uncensored, then used censorship to uncensor, then censored to cover, its just the first time I saw this weird kind of censorship, like as long as girls are there, jokes like "I won't be able to get it up on a woman" are okay??????? Idk they were just extremely out there almost each episode with all kinds of stuff, that by the end I was like... well, at this point its already pointless. I guess it was just the first time, I've seen it made in such weird way and actually used in a smart way fitted with the character and no just for the sake of it. Adding a scene when he accidentally calls his in their opinion potential love interest his bro's name is actually uncensoring, not censoring, you know what I mean? (since we in fact didn't move anywhere near this realization in the book). Same as what many noticed about them openly making fun of censorship and "out of nowhere appeared feelings and how its not love and whats wrong with idolization if u don't know a person" after NPSS interviews and how it only made everyone fall for what pingxie have more. So it was like... I actually for the first time enjoyed it. It was a pretty genius way of showing Wu Xie's weird internal struggles from that book, which I thought were not possible to show. Bc as you know he's hilariously oblivious there about all of it and same as WWX for example do not even consider such possibility. But I think it's just bc it's not actual BL BL, it's a story where a couple naturally accidentaly came together and turned out to be both guys (even tho one was initially intende to be a girl xD), so its in general complicated. Wu Xie is just borderline lost at this point xD. It's like "Yeah, I want him... What do you mean as in dating? Whats that?". Or like:

- Want a wife?

- No, I want Xiaoge.

- As in you're gay?

- What's a gay?

That's basically how he rolls.

But I do love jealous Wu Xie, I think it's hilarious here, he's like somehow complitely okay with how idiotic he looks and that's very sweet haha.

BnHA 6th Popularity Poll Reaction Post - Risky Spoiler-Dodging Edition

hey guys, so seeing as the results from the 6th popularity poll were leaked today, I figured I would do a separate reaction + analysis post this year, rather than piling it in as an extra on top of the chapter reaction post tomorrow. I figure this makes more sense anyway, since they’re really two completely different things. also this way I can write as much as I want lol.

also, just fyi, I am still completely unspoiled for chapter 293. and probably the smart thing to do to keep it that way would be to log off tumblr and hold off posting this until tomorrow, but I apparently have no impulse control today so oh well. anyway, so I’m hoping you guys will keep this spoiler-free if you don’t mind! as always, I would prefer to just jump right in completely unaware tomorrow like Troy returning to the study room with the pizza boxes lol.

okay so this first part is just going to be my predictions. fyi I am writing this part on Wednesday night, and then I’ll add on the results part on Thursday or Friday (ETA: Thursday, apparently, since I am impatient.)

okay so first of all, just as a refresher, this poll was open to Japanese voters from Aug 3 to Sep 30. meaning chapters 279 through 285. meanwhile last year’s poll took place around the tail end of the MVA arc. so between then and now we had Heroes Rising, the Endeavor Agency arc, and the War arc up to the part where the 1-A kids took on Gigantomachia in Gunga, and started battling Tomura in Jakku. so technically only a couple of arcs, but a LOT of stuff going down in them. oh and season 4 of the anime as well

so! firstly, I predict that my truculent africanized honeybee son will hold on to his crown at #1, coming off a year in which he did some internship-boosted soul searching, borrowed OFA in movie canon, and finished out the voting period as the my-body-moved-on-its-own character development MVP. like CALL ME CRAZY lol, but I’m pretty sure his title is safe. and then after him will be Deku and Shouto as usual

Aizawa should hopefully also have a strong showing because the dude had a banner fucking year. reunited with his old dead friend, took on Tomura with his hopelessly inept hero pals, and then chopped his fucking leg off. he had better be in the top 10. his fucking leg died for this, idk what else he has to do

Endeavor also stands a decent chance of doing well given the internship arc and the final episode of season 4. which I’m sure will go down just swimmingly if that does happen lmao. especially if he somehow manages to rank higher than...

Dabi, which I don’t think he will btw, but you never know. anyways though, but I’m thinking Dabi’s going to have a stronger showing than in past years (in the last poll he only got 367 votes and was ranked 19th). mostly because of his fight in the Gunga mansion, and his cheekily censored name reveal to...

Hawks, who is also going to rank pretty high here, I think. might be he loses some points for killing off Twice, but his back was basically to the wall there. and he has always been very popular, and I think season 4 will also give him a boost, along with his heavy involvement in the first half of the War arc

Tomura was already in 6th place last year and I think he cracks the top 5 this year. he’s gotten exponentially more popular since the MVA arc, and got a boost in the last poll even though his flashback had only just barely happened, and he hadn’t finished Awakening yet and all that stuff. anyway, so he’s only gotten cooler and more tragic since then so I think he makes a big play here

Kirishima, Momo, Tokoyami, and Mina should also hopefully do well, since the poll opened right in the middle of all that Gigantomachia action, and Toko had just got done being an absolute badass and protecting his birb dad. I don’t think he’ll quite make it to the top ten, but he should

and last but not least, I’m hoping that Mirko will come out and take the polls by storm, although I have no clue how popular she is in Japan lol. she’s clearly Horikoshi’s favorite though. she SHOULD be everyone’s favorite, but I mean, we’ll see how it goes

anyway that’s it as far as predictions! and so now, through the magic of writing stuff at different times, we will fast-forward to the part where we actually find out the results!

anyway so I think that’s it! I mean not really, but I’m getting kind of tired lol. so just, you know, insert the usual gripes at Overhaul’s ranking here, although we can be happy about Magne making her way onto the list (r.i.p.), and Mineta and AFO taking a very satisfying slide down (all the way out, in AFO’s case; good riddance you bum). Hadou also got a huge boost which is awesome. Mustard’s persistent ownership of the #36 spot will forever remain a mystery to me, but oh well

anyways, this was fun. and I really do feel like everyone is looking away on purpose so that when Deku brains Kacchan with that pipe in about two seconds from now, there will be no witnesses, oh my fucking god

I just want to talk about one of my favorite Quodo scenes. You know, as I do. So S2 E18 Profit and Loss, for all that it’s focused on a one-episode love interest for Quark (and a romance with Natima so intense that it makes Quark very uncharacteristically be willing to risk his life and even give up the bar for the sake of pursuing it), it has some really amazing Quodo scenes. In particular, it has a really lengthy conversation between Quark and Odo that features some great things like (1) establishing important aspects of both of their characters and their relationship, (2) lots of intimate leaning over each other and casual touches, and (3) a flirtatious and shippy dynamic.

Let me walk through the whole scene because there’s a lot to analyze here.

The scene opens with Quark coming to talk to Odo about the urgent need to release Natima rather than handing her over to the Cardassian government who will execute her. Quark tries multiple tacks, all of which fail:

First, he tries to make the appeal that releasing the Cardassian dissidents would lead to a better, brighter Cardassia, which obviously Odo doesn’t buy. Quark doesn’t care about that.

Quark immediately pivots to spinning that change as one that would lead to him getting more profits -- more plausible, at least, but Odo is still skeptical. In response, knowing that Odo doesn’t find benefiting Quark financially to be a worthy cause, Quark impishly says, “Now Odo... don’t allow my greed to keep you from doing the right thing.” Here he’s making a small appeal to Odo’s moral system rather than Quark’s.

But that’s not the reason why Odo was skeptical. He’s skeptical because Quark isn’t being honest about his motivations.

“I know you better than you think, Quark.” - Moment #1 in this scene where the long history and enefriend relationship between Quark and Odo is highlighted.

Odo prompts Quark to bring up the third and more honest consideration: that Quark is in love with Natima. Odo asks Quark why he didn’t just say that from the start, which prompts Quark to go into a long rant about how Odo is incapable of understanding his feelings while Odo listens awkwardly: “What was I supposed to say? That I love her? That I would do anything for her? That without her my life would be meaningless. Sure, I could say those things, but what good would it do? How could I expect you to understand? You’ve never had those feelings. You don’t know what it means to really care about another person. You’ve never been in love. You’ve got all the emotions of a stone. (pause) No offense.”

None is taken, because that is the image that Odo has carefully crafted for himself, which doesn’t in actuality line up with who he is, but he’s happy for others to believe that is how he is like. So even though Quark realizes how harsh his words are and walks it back, Odo is not offended, but nor does he find it entirely convincing either. It’s one of this scene’s many ways of illustrating the conflicting moral codes between Quark and Odo: Quark may view doing things out of love as legitimate, but he knows that Odo can’t enter into that mindset.

(It's not text, but Quark's speech could also be read as Quark expressing his frustration that his own attempts to court Odo have ended in failure -- Quark angsting that he is barking up the wrong tree, so to speak.)

Quark then tries a fourth tack: Making an exchange instead of putting forward logical arguments and appeals. He begins to offer information on the various deals he’s involved in ("Listen to me, Odo. You do this for me, and I promise there'll be no more secrets between us") -- this momentarily catches Odo’s interest -- before Quark chickens out and instead offers information on Rom’s activities instead, which is, well, worthless, lol. Odo isn’t interested in your brother, Quark, he’s interested in you. Quark does have something of value to Odo but he’s not willing to offer it up because, well, he's just not THAT good of a person.

Seeing this fourth try has failed, Quark then makes a fifth appeal:

Quark’s fifth try involves directly leveraging Quark and Odo’s relationship and involves Quark asking Odo to do this as a personal favor to him. Here is moment #2 where Quark and Odo’s longstanding relationship is highlighted, with Quark turning what Odo said earlier back on him:

(Technically, Odo didn’t say he knew Quark better than anyone else; he said he knew Quark better than Quark thought. But Quark is speaking the truth in any case.) Quark actually just spells out their relationship a bit anviliciously: “Sure, sometimes we’re on opposite sides, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t close. I never told you this, Odo, but I consider you as dear to me as my brother.” Again, Odo is unimpressed given that Quark literally just tried to sell out his brother. One can’t help but feel like Quark’s fifth appeal failed for the same reason his fourth one failed: Like with the fourth appeal, Quark began to show some vulnerability here which actually interested Odo, but chickened out at the end. He did have something valuable to bargain with (his relationship with Odo) but wasn’t willing to pay the price it would require (being fully open and vulnerable with Odo about the value of that relationship) -- instead, he deflects at the last moment with something joking and ironic.

Finally, Quark makes his sixth and last appeal. “Odo, look at me. Look at me. I’m on my knees. I’m begging you. I don’t care why you do it. Pick any reason you want. But please, let Natima and the others go.”

On his knees, he makes the Ferengi gesture of supplication. With this attempt, Quark does two things: One, he sacrifices his pride for the first time by openly begging -- in his other appeals, he protected his pride by couching it in logical appeal, anger/disapproval at Odo, irony, or jokes. But here, for the first time, he displays humility, desperation, vulnerability, etc. Second, he lets Odo pick the reason, which allows Odo to also intervene without having to lose his own pride.

The reason Odo picks in the end is (what else) justice.

"Justice," Quark says. "That was going to be my next suggestion."

And then (after being on his knees begging, etc.) Quark slowly gets to his feet, and it’s framed like this:

THIS. IS SO. SUGGESTIVE.

I’m... I'm dying. Definitely a "getting shit past the censors" moment.

Anyway, moving swiftly along, now that Quark has gotten what he wants, it's back to the old light-hearted and flirty dynamic they always have. Now assured Odo definitely isn't doing this as a personal favor to Quark, Quark gleefully declares himself debt-free to Odo. He hugs him and Odo pretends to dislike it.

The scene ends with Odo asking how Quark plans to sneak the dissidents past the Cardassian warship hovering outside DS9. By the way he asks the question and is able to guess just by Quark's mischievous smile, Odo already knows the answer, bringing the episode back full circle from its opening where Odo was investigating Quark for having an illegal cloaking device.

Yeah, bickering, casual touching, their cat-and-mouse relationship, flirtatious dialogue, even Odo grudgingly letting Quark get away with crimes because they're a reluctant team with aligned interests now -- it's all here.

Anyway, I love this scene because it's an extended look at how Quark's moral system and Odo's don't really line up with each other (Quark valuing things like love and profit and not valuing abstract things like justice or order, and vice versa for Odo) to the point where it's actively hard for Quark to convince Odo to do something he's inclined/sympathetic to doing anyway. At the same time, they also have some shared interests (in Quark's dealings, in their relationship with each other) while being engaged in a complex dance where neither of them can quite acknowledge it. For example, Odo says he will release the prisoners solely out of his own sense of justice, but if so, why did it take Quark begging him to move him to act? Before Quark came to his office, he was reading a detective novel, suggesting that Quark's appeal is at least one part of Odo's decision to act, despite what they both say. But it serves Quark's purposes to let this slide ("So, you're not really doing this for me?" "That's right." "Then I don't owe you a thing. Thank you!") and let Odo keep his pride, so he does.

Anyway, I just love how much Quodo there is in an episode that's entirely dedicated to Quark's love for a different woman entirely. That's how powerful the relationship between these two is.

Hi, i ran across your comments on the post about radio stations. I guess this might be a dumb/weird ask...I work at the Niels*n (censored so this doesnt come back to me somehow) Radio Ratings callcenter and I wonder if that ratings system is still relevant or even useful to small college/independent radio stations? Or if its bullshit? Just curious..!

I came back to check messages at a good time, I see. xD First of all, your question isn't dumb. There are no dumb questions, duderino! Sadly, though, this one I don't have a definite answer for, but I do have some comments on calling into stations and DJs (since you say you work in radio ratings, some of this stuff you might know already, but some of my other followers might not so I'm adding extra info for them, too ^^ hope that's alright)

While I do work in the radio business I'm not a total expert when it comes to all of the behind-the-scenes stuff like this. I'm just a disc jockey, after all (and a mostly self-taught one at that). I'm more well-versed in basic radio history/the biographies of specific radio personalities, what's allowed and not allowed on the air, and actually running and hosting shows. I can say what helps DJs like me personally, though.

Requests, call-ins, text-ins, e-mails, ect. are helpful just in the sense that the station can see "Hey, people really like this DJ! So, we should keep them on the air and give them a good time slot and have little promos for their show because people are tuning in specifically to hear this person!", so if there's a certain on-air personality or show that you like, send them a line! I promise you that you are 100% not bothering them. You know how people like hearing that they did a good job on a drawing, or a fanfiction, or a video? Radio hosts like hearing they're doing a good job, too! And any DJ worth their vinyl is going to love getting requests. You're asking us to play a song that you could listen to on Spotify, but you think our show is special enough that you want to hear us play it and share with our listeners? That's a great feeling to have!

It also helps specifically college/school stations because many schools try to cut costs anywhere they can (especially because the government keeps cutting school funding, but that's for another post), so if they know that people actually care about their college/school station, and would raise a fuss if they got rid of it, they're more likely to keep it around. Of course, it also helps if there are volunteers. College and school stations are almost always looking for volunteers (and if you have broadcast-fright, don't worry! Not every job there involves actually being on the air or behind a microphone. You could be a board operator, edit pre-recorded shows, write scripts, even help to schedule station events! Just ask and I'm sure they can help find a good position for you if you're interested.) I'd also imagine that local non-school stations probably benefit from knowing that they're heard, at the very least just to boost morale and know that people care about what they're doing. Also just building a sense of community around that station. Many local stations also accept donations, as well! Just check to see if they have a website and look for a donation button there. If they don't have one, though, try calling in and asking. Local stations are also often looking for volunteers, too, so try checking into that as well. As far as if it helps in a strictly financial sense or specifically in a ratings sense or some way like that, I'm not 100% sure, and I'm not going to pretend that I know the nitty gritty of how that works. (Business isn't exactly my strong suit.. Numbers are Very Hard) You'd probably be better off asking a station manager. But, calling in and requesting songs is beneficial and still helps in plenty of other ways regardless of ratings. Tl;dr: I'm not 100% sure how call ratings work in a technical sense so I can't answer that, but calling in to stations does benefit them in various ways besides just ratings so definitely call in. Calling in is a good thing!
