"It's a sci-fi film. Not usually my vibe but it has to do with time travel and it would include me being a time Traveler so I want to really...get into that mindset, you know?" It had always seemed silly to him but the deeper he dove into his sadness the more science fiction appealed to him. "Anything you'd recommend off the top of his head."
"Totally understood. Not the most desirable of scents," he said with a dry laugh. "Happiness is good, not something you feel a lot. But what do you mean you don't have many options? I mean if you could snap your fingers and be doing anything, what would it be? I mean aside from lying on a beach cause that would be mine, who actually wants to work, you know?" He shrugged as he thought about it. He technically didn't need to work but he didn't mention that.

"Ooo. What role is that?" Vivian asked, curiously. She always had an appreciation for acting, all kinds. Stage, screen, all of it. It was, after all, a part of what brought movies into the world. It was no secret that Vivian was a film buff. It honestly felt like the healthiest thing she could say bout herself.
"I have to stop myself from smelling like Breaking Glass half the time." She confessed - that also didn't really feel like much of a secret. Or at the very least, it was an easy conclusion to draw.
"I'm happy there." She said, as she walked alongside him to the coffee shop. "Retail may not be everyone's first choice for work, but it's not like I have many options. And I like getting to talk about movies with the customers, so it's better than any other retail job for me."

REPOST  ,  NOT  REBLOG !  TAG  OTHER  MUNS  YOU  WOULD  LIKE  TO  GET  TO  KNOW  BETTER  WHEN  YOU’RE  DONE !
NAME: Zen NICKNAME: Zen, Satan, co-Satan, [muse]-mun AGE:  32 FACECLAIM: None PRONOUNS: She/her HEIGHT:  5′10″ BIRTHDAY  :  January 6 AESTHETIC  :  Books, messy rooms, laptops, worn tshirts and jeans, Hungarian embroidery, statement glasses, tea, geeky throw blankets, art museums LAST SONG YOU LISTENED TO: Whatever was playing on WQXR Friday evening
FAVOURITE MUSE(S) YOU’VE WRITTEN: Vivian, Ros, and Duvessa.  It’s why I try to keep at least the three of them semi-active even if I’m, as usual, slacking on drafts.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON YOUR CURRENT MUSE (THAT YOU ARE POSTING THIS ON): So SatanFish said she had a new muse that I’d never heard of, and like I do when I’m interested in playing with a canon character I know nothing about, I watched the show he was from - or at least the seasons that he was in.  And I fell in love with Ros almost immediately (despite having come in halfway through her story).  She was just so badass.  And then SatanFish and I began discussing the relationship between Lucas and Ros, and I was all ‘what the hell’ and went and watched seasons 5 & 6 and then rewatched 7 & 8.  And there was just... so much to process.  The decisions she’s made, her relationships, the way she presents herself versus the way we get to see her when she’s alone.  I’m a sucker for meta and analyzing and Ros just presented so much opportunity for those things.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE:  I will trot out that review where she was declared the best female character on British television constantly because it’s fucking true.  Ros got a depth of character on the show that’s usually reserved for straight white attractive male leads.  She was allowed to make mistakes - some massive mistakes at that - earn her redemption, allowed to love and be jealous and mourn and move on and then mourn some more, she was allowed to be angry and vengeful and hurt people, she was allowed to be oh so fucking badass (Adam Carter never murdered an FSB officer with a fork), she had complex relationships, she was unrepentantly confident in herself and her abilities, and as much as I ship her and Lucas, she was allowed to have an incredible platonic relationship with one of the few people in the show who could possibly match her for skill, giving us an amazing team.
I love how complex Ros is.  A lot of fans write her off or even celebrate her as the Ice Queen of Section D (a phrase I’ve come across so often I now just hc it as what people call Ros behind her back) and yeah, Ros can be hard.  She can make some amazingly unpleasant calls.  She can watch someone murdered in front of her without showing a twitch on a polygraph.  But under that she is incredibly emotional, and those emotions drive her as often as cold logic does.  And I love how flawed she is.  She makes decisions and they are bad ones, and she justifies them to herself, and to anyone who calls her on them.
I’m going to shut up now because it would be way too easy for me to do a scene-by-scene breakdown of 4 seasons of Spooks to explain what I love about Ros.  I just really love Ros Myers okay?
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING:  Getting a reaction from people.  Anything from ‘I love Ros’ sass’ to ‘OMFG HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME MAKE IT BETTER NOW’.  Compliments about my muses go a long way; frankly I dive into my ‘things to make the mun smile’ tag when I have the muse to write but am struggling with the motivation.
And, as always, watching source material associated with my muses is an inspiration.  I’ve watched Spooks a million times and SatanFIsh still just got a dozen messages on Ros’ reaction to something compared to another character’s reaction.
FAVOURITE TYPES OF THREADS: Length-wise, anything from para to novella; I try one-liners but they either fizzle out or turn into para threads.  I like getting in my characters’ heads when I write, especially with a muse like Ros who has so much going on in her head at once, much of it conflicting with what she’s saying or how she’s acting, and that takes up space.
Genre-wise, I enjoy a good organic angst.  I really do.  But the key word is organic - I’m not big on angst for angst’s sake, and I really don’t go for tormenting a muse just for the mun’s enjoyment, with no character growth to show for it.  I also like slice-of-life stuff, particularly for Ros.  Casual chatting or banter on the Grid during a slow day, evenings at home, fluffy mornings, that sort of thing.  The stuff we never saw on the show (partly because a certain someone showed up and stole Ros’ rightful scenes of the personal life of the Section Chief).  Basically so long as we’re both having fun I’m happy.
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT MUSE:   I am not a British spy.  I’m not even British.  Also because I know nothing about Ros’ personal life except that she’s still in contact with her mother and she’s ‘not one for dinner parties’ - and because she lives for her work - it’s very hard to figure out how to interact with other muses without involving her work.
TAGGED  BY  : the fantastic @brooklynislandgirl (well you tagged Vivian but I did this for her just a week ago or so) TAGGING: anyone who wants to, just mention me!

She started out on radio before hosting a children’s TV show in Seattle. By the late 1950s, she had moved to Hollywood and was narrating record albums for Disney, including “Bambi” and “Babes in Toyland.” She returned to do a 1974 episode of “Here’s Lucy.”  Although she died in 2012, her voice can still be heard in the chorus of birds outside The Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
Mr. Mooney's cockatiel (and all the other budgies in the pet shop) are played by live birds.
Sid Gould (Voice on the Telephone) made more than 45 appearances on “The Lucy Show,” all as background characters. He also did 40 episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” Gould (born Sydney Greenfader) was Lucille Ball’s cousin by marriage to Gary Morton. Gould was married to Vanda Barra, who also appeared on “The Lucy Show” starting in 1967, as well as on “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
The title puns on the slang expression “give/get the bird,” meaning to make a rude gesture by raising your middle finger to show that you are angry with someone.
Tumblr media
In real life, Lucille Ball is said to have had a bird phobia.  When she was four years old her father died of typhoid fever.  That same day, a bird got trapped inside their home.  Other recollections say that the wallpaper in her room was of a bird pattern.
Tumblr media
The episode opens with Lucy and Viv collecting trading stamps.  Viv wonders if they have enough to get to Hawaii.  Lucy says they have enough to get to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Trading Stamps were small paper coupons given to customers by merchants in loyalty marketing programs. When a customer accumulated a number of them, they could be exchanged for premiums, such as toys, personal items, housewares, furniture and appliances. The stamps were generally pasted into a booklet by licking the back, much like a postage stamp.  Although they were first introduced in 1891, they were most popular in the USA between 1930 and 1980.  Today they have been replaced by digital customer loyalty cards. There were several companies responsible for sponsoring trading stamps, the most popular being Blue Chip, S&H Green Stamps, and Plaid Stamps.
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney's pet bird is a female cockatiel named Greenback for its coloration. “Greenback” is also a slang word for US paper currency due to its dark green color; an ideal name for a miserly banker's bird!
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney has taught the bird to say “E pluribus unum” (latin for “out of many, one”), the de facto motto of the United States of America, appearing on the presidential seal and on many denominations of US currency.  Lucy teaches it to say, "Give Lucy more money." Greenback calls Mr. Mooney “Poppsy-Whoppsy.”
Tumblr media
Lucy finds a "Vote for Dewey" button under her couch and says she needs to clean more often. Thomas P. Dewey, was a Republican who lost the US presidential election of 1948 to Democrat  Harry S. Truman. This episode was broadcast right after the 1964 election. Dewey was a Republican, while Lucille Ball was a liberal Democrat. This discovery also implies that Lucy may have lived there (or owned the sofa) at least 16 years, ten years longer than she and Viv have lived together.
Tumblr media
When Lucy is on the telephone man's zip line, Greenback says “It's the only way to fly!” This was the advertising slogan for Western Airlines, a US carrier that was in operation from 1926 to 1987, before merging with Delta Airlines. In 1965 R&B singer Jewel Akens (“The Birds and the Bees”) released a song titled “It's the Only Way to Fly.”
Tumblr media
Mr. Mooney says that leaving his precious Greenback with Lucy was like leaving General Custer with Sitting Bull. George Armstrong Custer (1839-76) was a United States cavalry commander in the Civil War and the American Indian Wars.  Sitting Bull was a Sioux chief who rallied his tribe to defeat Custer and his men at the Battle of Little Bighorn (1876), known as “Custer's Last Stand.” Jerry celebrates Sitting Bull's birthday in “Lucy and the Good Skate” (S3;E1).
Tumblr media
A working phone on top of a telephone pole was also a running gag on the TV series “Green Acres” (1965-71).
Tumblr media
Sam at the pet shop refers Mr. Mooney to pet psychiatrist Dr. Marshall Belson PhD (parrots, horses and dogs). The doctor's name is a combination of the name of the two writers of this episode, Gary Marshall (right) and Jerry Belson (left).
Tumblr media
Sam tries to sell Lucy a mynah bird that says “rat fink.”  “The Rat Finks” was the name of Jerry and Sherman's group at camp in “Lucy, the Camp Cook” (S3;E6).
Tumblr media
Viv guesses that Greenback is “halfway to Capistrano.” This is a reference to San Juan Mission in Capistrano, southern California.  It is there that the American cliff swallow migrates to every year from its winters in Argentina, making the 6,000-mile trek in springtime. The Mission's location near two rivers made it an ideal location for the swallows to nest.  The expression “when the swallows return to Capistrano” has entered common usage.
Tumblr media
Speaking of Hawaii and birds!  (The red one is Lucy, naturally!)
Callbacks!
Tumblr media
Little Ricky had two parakeets Alice and Phil (“molting buzzards” to Fred Mertz) in “Little Ricky Gets a Dog” (ILL S6;E14), who were named for husband and wife performers Alice Faye and Phil Harris. In that episode, voice artist June Foray did the bark of Fred the dog, much the same way Ginny Tyler voices the birds here.
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo contended with pigeons on the ledge outside her apartment in “Lucy and Superman” (ILL S6;E13), one of the ten colorized episodes, and....
Tumblr media
...500 baby chicks loose in her Connecticut living room in “Lucy Raises Chickens” (ILL S6;E19).
Tumblr media
Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz wanted to go to Hawaii on “I Love Lucy” (inset) but never got any further than the Ricardo living room!
Tumblr media
While on the roof, Viv mentions that the last time she was up there was when the two put up the TV antenna in “Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (S1;E9).  This is one of the most direct callbacks to a previous episode thus far in the series. Lucy and Mr. Mooney were also on the home's roof to break into Viv's bedroom in “The Loophole in the Lease” (S2;E12).
Fast Forward!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy is a Bird Sitter” a 1974 episode of “Here's Lucy” Lucy Carter is enlisted by Harry (Gale Gordon) to care for a rare Tongan Weewawk, a fictional creature made up by the writers. That bird looks a lot like a common white pigeon, which makes finding him difficult when he flies away.
Tumblr media
On a rare two-part episode of “Here's Lucy” (1971) Lucy Carter and Vivian Jones cruise to Hawaii.  Hawaii was a favorite get-away destination for the Arnaz family (inset).
Blooper Alerts!
Tumblr media
Logistics! Even though it's the same house as in “Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna” (S1;E9), in “Lucy Gets the Bird” the antenna is in a different location, the background landscape has more buildings, and the design of the roof is slightly different.
Too Close for Comfort? Close-ups of Greenback sitting on the electrical wire reveal that the wire is not metal, but rope. Stray threads of hemp can be seen.

Questions for the Mun@ofclubsandcocaine
♢ What's an AU that you think just won't work with your muse?
I’d love to do it, if for no other reason than a chance to RP with Cort on her Negan, but I just can’t see a zombie apocalypse AU working for Vivian.  I can handle her mental illness in historical AUs when she’s otherwise living comfortably, but combining a lack of medication with the stresses and struggles of a post-apocalyptic world just... would not go well for her.
★ What type of historical AU would you like to do one day?
Well, SatanFish and I actually have a multi-muse Jack the Ripper AU planned out that we’ve just never gotten around to threading yet (and may never; sometimes just discussing things is fun).  It would involve @icekingloki as the infamous Ripper, Vivian as a Whitechapel prostitute who’s caught his fancy, @lucxsnorth as a bobby assigned to Whitechapel, and @rxsmyers in drag as his partner.
I also have this deep desire to do a WWI hospital camp AU based off a mix of ‘The Crimson Field’ and ‘Spooks’ with Ros and Vivian and Lucas (and anyone else who was interested).
OH and back when ‘Agent Carter’ first came out I put considerable thought and consideration into how to write Vivian in a WWII or post-WWII-era AU.
☺ What's a character that you desperately want your muse to play with? Why?
Well, you :P
I mean, there’s someone I want to play with in just about every one of the two thousand fandoms I have marked for AUs or crossovers.  Wynonna Earp, Alex Danvers, all four of the lady Ghostbusters, West and Glinda...
I also have all these fabulous OCs I follow?  And I want to play with all of them, too.

Vivian Cash — First Wife of “I Walk the Line” Johnny Cash
Bad on the movie - covering or cloaking the truth of Cash's history. Need a remake sometime based on the truth.
BLACK IS AN INVISIBLE COLOUR
Y’all know I’m a country girl. I grew up on a farm. I’m a Native Texan. I like cowboys, big hats, big trucks and country music. :) Country music is in my blood. My Twitter pal @GrooveSDC says his family are ‘black red necks’, I tweeted to him, I guess I’m a black red neck too. :) I loved listening to Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson.
Until yesterday, I never knew, Vivian Cash, first wife of Johnny Cash existed. What a gorgeous woman. And those 4 beautiful daughters belong to Johnny and Vivian. You learn something new everyday. Talk about shocked!
……….
I used to say I like every kind of music except Country. That was until my good friend Steve Abel made me sit down and listen to ‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’, recorded live at the infamous prison. I was an instant fan.
So when “Walk the Line”, the Johnny Cash biopic, was released in 2005 I was eager to see it. I thought it was a great movie, with some brilliant scenes, like the one where Ma and Pa Carter see off Cash’s dealer with shotguns as he quits cold turkey. They seemed to epitomise the best of White Southern Christian Decency, in contrast to the usual treatment we see of Southern hypocrisy, malice and racist cruelty.
youtube
The romance between Johnny Cash and June Carter was of course the main thread of the movie. It winds around his protracted wooing of her and ends with a caption celebrating their 35 year partnership on and off stage after she finally agrees to marry him. His first wife Vivian is portrayed as a woman just never suited to be his wife and who drove him away with her bitterness, jealousy and resentment. I remember idly wondering what she was really like, and whether this was a fair portrayal of her character, as the story moved back to his great love for June.
The Cash sisters. Rosanne is in the red and Kathy is in the dark blue.
Vivian Cash & daughter Roseann Cash
Watching the movie for a second time the other day I was again swept up in what a nasty, bitter woman Vivian was, even as another part of my mind again questioned the representation. In the garden with my wife the following day, we began deconstructing the movie as we worked. As we talked through different elements of the plot, I began to feel more and more uneasy. Later I decided to google Vivian Cash. I found a review of her book ‘I Walked the Line’, written after the film came out. Not surprisingly it gave a very different story to the film, suggesting that their marriage had been very happy until June stole John away. What WAS surprising, though, was when I looked at photos of Vivian. Turns out that she was a black woman.
You’d never know from reading any of the articles about her.
You’d certainly never know from watching the movie, where she is played by Ginnifer Goodwin.
In fact the only thing I found in my admittedly brief search that referenced her ethnicity was a newspaper headline from when he was busted for drugs that says “ARREST EXPOSES JOHNNY CASH’S NEGRO WIFE”. Presumably exposes her for the sin of being black in the USA.
Interestingly, in contrast to the newspaper article from the time, the film shows him leaving court alone and coming home to her censorious displeasure. It is shortly after this arrest that the chronology of the film shows them separating.
I’d noticed before that there are almost no black people in the film. Two shoe shiners are the sum total are far as I remember. I imagine the director, James Mangold, justifies this by saying that there are no black characters who are important to the story. That is if you don’t include his first wife.
Suddenly the treatment of Vivian makes complete sense. In the world of American Country music, of course the black woman is the villain of the story – even when her husband leaves her and her four daughters for another woman. June and John are considered one of the most iconic couples in country music history, and no black woman is going to undermine that narrative. Her character has to be destroyed. But even that is not enough. Her very identity is robbed from her, made invisible by whitewash.
They say that black is not a colour, it is the absence of light. That certainly seems to be true in Hollywood.

Guess whose first wife was black and of course you have probably never heard about her or seen her. Even in the movie done about Johnny Cash do you ever see her, as she was portrayed to be white. Well here's the real deal on her: I used to say I like every kind of music except Country. That was until my good friend Steve Abel made me sit down and listen to ‘Johnny Cash at San Quentin’, recorded live at the infamous prison. I was an instant fan. "Ah yes, yes now I remember. I'll have to come by and get some things soon. I have some studying to do for a role." Which wasn't a total lie but the role had already been given to someone else. Carter was just in denial. "God, I wish, these days its more like a knockout elixir for me than an energizer." Though that probably had more to do with him getting older than anything else.
"Lavender sounds lovely, my dear life saver. You are just always prepared, huh?" He unbuttoned his top shirt and shrugged it off so he was just in his tank top, feeling a bit more fresh as he put the deodorant on and threw his button up over his shoulder. "You know, it's an improvement, thanks," he told her, genuine in his appreciation and not having to explain himself.
"So do you like the rental place or is there something else you want to do?" He was genuinely curious and making conversation as they started their walk to the coffee shop. "I mean I'm a man who loves movies so I have great appreciation for the rental store."
Tumblr media
"I'm a cashier at Rewind Rentals." Vivian said, when Carter asked where she worked. It wasn't something she thought much of, or judged. As someone who wasn't always present, mentally speaking, she knew how hard it could be to retain information.
She shook her head when he asked if she was late for work. "Alcohol makes me wake up early." She explained, before reaching into her bag at his next revelation. "I have you covered there, my friend." She said, before pulling out a bottle of deodorant. "As long as you don't mind smelling like lavender."
Vivian was always sure to carry something to mask her own pathetic scent.

"What you mean laying out on some random persons lawn isn't a prize? Oh Vivian you haven't been living, my dear," he teased. "Nah don't worry about it. I'll make my way if you don't mind me walking with you for a little bit," he offered, finally stretching his arms above his head to help his back. He'd definitely need a day full of sleep to recover. "You're so smart, I should start carrying a flask. Where do you work again?" He usually didn't but this time he actually felt bad for not remembering. Vivian sort of reminded him of himself which wasn't always a good thing but in that moment he was grateful that none of them were trying to give each other a lecture. They were seeing each other and accepting it. It was what Carter needed in that moment.
"Are you late to work? If not I'll get us both a coffee. Or well I'll give you the money and you can go in because I think they'll kick me out smelling like this," he smelled himself and winced. "I'd say looking like this too but we both know I still look good," he joked. "What do you say?"
Tumblr media
Vivian let out a laugh when Carter brought up the shots. "Yup, you definitely won. Seems like you didn't get the best prize, though." She joked, wondering what she could possibly do to help the man. Especially since he needed a lift and she didn't even have a car anymore.
"I can't drive, but maybe I can call you a cab from the telephone box." She said, patting her pockets for a moment to see if she had any money to give him. She did. "I drank another shot to clear the headache." Vivian explained, when Carter asked how she was still standing. "So I'm basically tipsy, again. But I can work on tipsy, my boss doesn't even notice."

"Vivian?" He squinted to look at her before he started laughing, pieces of the night before starting to come back to him. "Last I recall we were going shot for shot. You remember who won? I'm sure it was me," he told her, groaning slightly as he pushed himself to stand. "Of course it did, Jesus, I slept that hard?" It was more of a question to himself but he couldn't dwell on it long. He didn't want to. "Uh," he looked at her then at his watch and then realized he was on the opposite side of town.
"Yeah, you mind giving me a ride? And if we stop for coffee because Jesus my head is pounding," he moved closer to her and checked his watch again. "How the hell are you upright right now? And don't you dare say it's cause I'm old."
Tumblr media
Vivian woke up feeling like shit from the night before, and she had to have a shot of vodka to ease the hangover. Once her head stopped pounding, she made her way out of the apartment and started walking to work. Driving was just something she didn't do anymore, she knew how much of a risk she was behind the wheel.
As the passed by one house, she noticed Carter laying down on the lawn. So that's what happened to him last night, she couldn't help but let out a laugh.
"Good morning to you, too." Vivian said with a smile. "It did rain last night." She assured him, noticing that he was wet. "Do you need help getting home?"
