Shoutout to my fellow Tourettics/ticcers who don’t know if they fit into the severe or minor tic categories.
People whose tics fluctuate to huge extremes.
People who are fully disabled by their tics some days, and have barely noticeable tics or no tics other days.
People who curse and scream and fall down some days, and only whistle and blink others.
People who have extreme tics for a moment and then have no tics the next.
Yall are valid. Your tics are valid. I know we sometimes feel weird or left out in even our own spaces, but I promise you belong here. You’re loved and welcomed here

On Tourettes
ANYTHING can be a tic. Including, but not limited to cuss words, animals sounds, physically painful movements, hitting, or a stupid dance move/pose
Tics do have flare ups and they're pretty much directly related to stress. If someone is ticcing extremely hard at a party and then not really doing it much once they get home THAT IS NORMAL
Yes they do need a t/cw [I'm not sure on the difference] in video/audio form. It's not unfair to people with tics, it keeps other ticcers from getting triggered and having a flare up
No we cannot turn them off for longer than a few seconds or a minute at the best of times. Even if we try really really hard
I have never met someone personally who tics by typing out certain words
Tics can be developed. They start early if you're born with Tourettes but they can be developed through mental or physical trauma. They can be caused by ocd and similar disorders. Specific tics often appear or disappear over long periods of time
It's absolutely possible to tic on beat to a tiktok audio by chance
To the best of my knowledge, it's not possible for one member of a system to tic while another doesn't, although one member might have more or less severe tics
They can be extremely painful
They aren't the same as stimming

literally dishonour on you dishonour on your cow if you use tone indicators or trigger warnings as a joke. That defeats the purpose and you are ableist. Anyways on to the post
Thinking about tone tags I made up with my friends,, my favorite is /sil (silly) which is just /hj but cutesy :> Or like putting // to indicate that it's a joke for example: hey :3 //intentions of biting u //gay
HOWEVER
It's kind of in the same vein as responding to my tics as if I genuinely said that. I personally think that's fucking funny and entertaining, but the majority of other ticcers Do Not Fuck with that and find it rly annoying which is valid !!! basically I'm saying Just because my friends can do this with me doesn't mean you should assume it's always fine
because if you just started doing these things randomly ppl would understandably be confused and offended
anyhow I love being silly with my mateys and having things / inside jokes that are just for us

What is oppositional defiant tic or oppositional tic?
This term is coined by Jess Thom aka Touretteshero. She has Tourette’s and is a public speaker and advocate on Tourette’s. She has a blog dedicated to sharing information and personal experiences. (This link will directly take you to her sharing her experiences with ODT)
Oppositional tic is a tic that makes you say, do, or think of something you’d normally wouldn’t do or never would do.
E.g.
Ticcing a Christmas gift secret in front of the person
Tics forcing you to tense your stomach muscles until you pee (bladder tic)
Gagging tic that could lead to a vomiting tic
Ticcing insults or rude comments when you’re the type of person that keeps negative thoughts and opinions to yourself
Ticcing slurs
Tics mimicking regular conversations and makes it seem like you’re directly speaking to someone, when you're not meaning to or are shy and would less likely strike up a conversation (e.g. ticcing questions, ticcing specific words or paragraphs like: “Cool shoes!” “Hello!” may be combined with waving, “How’s your day?” Etc.)
Suggesting or requesting the ticcer to stay silent in certain places (library, movie theater, etc.), not to do something in the building (e.g. A sign says not to tap on the glass after hearing or reading the sign the ticcer may immediately tap on the glass as a tic, etc.), giving an assignment not to drop or spill something the ticcer may end up breaking or spilling it.
Getting a mental picture (spilling food and drinks, throwing stuff, hitting someone or something), words or phrases (these will not lead to anxious behavior or OCD as tics are exclusively a tic disorder neurotype, if one has a anxiety disorder or OCD, mental tics can trigger anxiety and OCD)
What makes it an oppositional tic if the disorder is oppositional itself?
Oppositional tics includes more range of complex tics and not just inappropriate and slur tics. It shows and open up minds that tics can mimic everything the human body possibly can do.
Are coprophenomena terms problematic?
No, though it caused uneducated people to create / use the ablest term “the swearing disease / disorder”. It also has lead people to believe it's something we want to do or choosing to do to get away with it, which can be really difficult to talk about tics including mental tics.
Coprophenomena terms are perfectly okay to use. Coprophenomena only focuses on insults, slurs and inappropriate vocal, motor and mental tics, while oppositional tics focuses on more range of complex tics.
ODT / OT also focuses more on the ticcers experience with their inappropriate tics, instead of focusing on how society is distressed by it.
Here's a video of a tourettic woman who talks about OT / ODT

Hi ticcers, I need your help and advice. So, super long story short I was bullied to the point of wanting to not be there anymore last year for my tic disorder and ended up in a psych hospital. The rest of my senior year I spent in and out of hospitals and medical appointments and suffered through the whole thing. I got to college ready for a new start and everything and be open about my disorder yet the same people from highschool restarted the same rumors. I have post traumatic stress from this last year and this is really giving me a lot of anxiety and I don’t know what to do. I never did anything wrong but be me and yet here my disability is leading the way and publicly embarrassing me. I am not ashamed but it’s hard to keep this confidence when there is nobody even trying to help me stay afloat.

As a touretic I can say it is also all fun and games till we tic something ABOUT them.
Or makes them feel uncomfortable, we are funny and quirky till we're not... And we're a DX ticcer , tourettes shows disability is a social construct, that our need to tic and be ourselves is policed based on how non disruptive your tics/disability is.
Fuck Ableds/Enablers and sanists
People will support Tourettics until they have coprolalia. You stand with us, you stand with ALL of us.

I don’t wanna seem spammy by sharing a link, but you asked if anyone was plural who also has tics and I know a good discord server that has tons of plural ticcers, and if that’s your thing I think you might find good community there. It’s called Tic Talk. It’s too busy for me so I don’t go there anymore but there are a lot of plural people there! Here’s the link if you want. https://discord.com/invite/TABXs6n
Thank you! I've joined! You're not crossing a boundary or being spammy when recommending something! I appreciate it greatly! <3

I'll also add:
- Coprographia, which is the involuntary writing or drawing vulgar/offensive/obscene words, phrases, or images
- Echolalia, which is the involuntary repetition of words or phrases said by others. Palilaliacis the involuntary repetition of words or phrases said by the speaker
- I'm not well-educated on it, but coprolalia, copropraxia, coprographia, and echolalia and palilalia are not unique to Tourette Syndrome, and can be caused by other things as well.
- Some people have handwriting tics, such as writing a letter, word, or word fragment repeatedly, or tracing over a letter or word multiple times (though of couse not limited to these; tics can be almost anything). I also personally have typing tics, which includes typing and backspacing a letter multiple times, hitting the space button and backspace multiple times, smashing all of the keys on a keyboard at once (any keysmashes I put in my posts/comments/messages are intentional, however, I just delete any unintentional keysmashes).
- The differenc between tics and stimming can be razor thin, especially since some people don't find their tics distressing, some stims can indeed look like tics, and some people cannot prevent themselves from stimming. But as a general rule, tics are characterized by a premonitory urge, they have no benefit to the ticcer, and are usually short, even if they are repetitive. There are exceptions to this, such as dystonic tics or tic attacks, but I don't think anyone is confused about the latter. Stims are helpful, and help regulate sensory input. And stims can be short, sharp movements. Someone could have a hand flapping tic and someone else could have a hand flapping stim. The difference is generally going to be how it makes you feel; and if someone just does hand flapping for a few seconds, I would probably lean towards saying it's a tic. Tics like that aren't really prolonged things, while a lot of stims are. If you're someone who has a rocking stim, that's something you could do for a long time; I often do a rocking stim for probably hours without even realizing it. But if it was a few short, sharp rocks back and forth, that's probably tics. This was a really messy explanation, but it is something that is really difficult to explain.
I hope any of my additions are useful to someone, happy tourettes awareness month!
Happy tourettes awareness month! Here are some things in no particular order I wish people understood about living with tourettes!
- We have to live with a constant fear of others thinking that we are on drugs or otherwise dangerous to be around. A lot of people tell us to not suppress because "you shouldn't be embarrassed!" But it's not about that. Having tourettes can genuinely put you in danger, and for many of us already has many times. It's not about being embarrassed, it's about being fearful.
- Suppression hurts. It's exhausting and it's hard.
- Coprolalia is more than just swearing. It can also look like saying "I have a bomb" when you're in an airport. Or "I'm a nazi." Or any number of things that are socially unacceptable to say. Coprolalia is about your brain attaching to words or phrases that you simply shouldn't say.
- Copropraxia is its lesser known twin, which is the same thing but with movements instead of words.
- Tourettes isn't just tics. Many of us also have rage issues and rage attacks, impulsivity issues, comorbidities like ADHD, OCD, and autism, chronic pain from constant movement leading to sore muscles, learning disability, social impairment, and much more.
- A clinical feature of tourette's is waxing and waning. Put simply, that means that sometimes we have a lot less or even no tics, and others we have a ton of tics. Waxing and waning periods can last hours, days, weeks, months or even years.
- Up to 50% of people with tourettes go undiagnosed in childhood
- You can keep talking while we are ticcing unless it's obvious that it's affecting our ability to hear (for example if I'm screaming.) we can hear you while we are ticking. Tics don't take up our entire brain space, in fact a lot of the time we aren't even thinking about the fact that we are having a tic unless you point it out
- In that vein, don't respond to, comment on, or overly pay attention to people's tics. Doing so will just make us have more. The best practice is to simply ignore them and treat us like any other person.
- A lot of us can drive.
- No, I don't think I tic my sleep. Some people do. But generally, how would we know?
- No, I don't tic during sex. And you're a weirdo for asking.
- Concentrating on something generally makes tics lesson or completely go away. So when you see someone with moderate to severe tourette's have really good eyeliner, or be able to draw or sing or dance, it's not an indicator that they're faking. It's a facet of the disorder that doing things we like lessons tics.
- Studies have found that people assigned female at birth or who otherwise have estrogen dominant bodies have less tics in childhood that gradually increase with age. Many of us are told in childhood that the ticks will go away, and then are taken by surprise when they get worse in adulthood. This isn't widely known, because most studies on tourette's until recently are done on people assigned male at birth
- Also on that note, afab people with tourette's are more likely to go undiagnosed than their amab counterparts.
- Tics don't inherently hurt. What does actually hurt though, or is at least uncomfortable, is the premonitory urge we get before a tic. This can feel like a buildup of energy, sort of like a cough or a sneeze, and gets worse the longer or more that we suppress a tic.
- Tics are both involuntary and controllable. This may sound like a contradiction, but breathing is both involuntary and controllable. You can hold your breath for as long as you can, but it will eventually force you to take a breath. Tics are the same
Fellow tourettics, please feel free to add more in the reblogs or replies :) happy awareness month!
