Jimmy is actually really good at getting gifts. Like, really good. Like, you mentioned this thing in passing 6 months ago, and he either remembered it or bought it for you and hid it for 6 months. He knows exactly what to get you!

Everyone thinks he's a grinch, so he doesn't usually get the best presents from others. It doesn't help that he never makes a christmas list or tell anyone what he wants 

(mostly because he doesn't want to be disappointed when he asks for something and doesn't get it, or he's afraid to ask for something “dorky” that he actually really wants)

When you ask him what he wants for christmas, he just kind of shrugs and says he'll like whatever you get him

So it's extra special when you return the favor and get him a gift just as thoughtful as he gave you :) You get him the video game or album or band tee (idk what men like) that he offhandedly mentioned weeks ago :) He can't hold in his surprise that you remembered!

summary: Trafalgar Law’s sudden discovery of your past ties to Straw Hat Luffy and Fire Fist Ace leaves his emotions in shambles

a/n: the final part for my first ever Law req! :D i hope this is a satisfactory ending for those who enjoyed the first half :3c

contents: set during Sabaody Archipelago arc w/ spoilers (?) from Luffy’s childhood, Luffy’s older sister!reader, Law has to continue to deal with his feelings and is still a Mess, Ace is causing trouble without even being physically present, jealousy, insecurity, angst to fluff, hurt/comfort !!

i. 

“y’know he’s trying to show-off for you, right?” Shachi comments with a shit-eating grin on his face and you can’t even be mad because he’s right.

after Luffy had handed you Ace’s gift in the auction house, he’d scooped you up just like when you were kids and made a mad dash for the entrance.

“i gotta show you my new moves!! they look super cool i promise!” he’d proclaimed as he jostled your poor injured body with little regard for your comfort but you laughed anyway because it’s been almost 5 years since you last saw him.

Law and the other pirate captain who was present for the whole scuffle–Kid, you think his name was–followed closely after; and purely from the way they were three men with high bounties, you knew immediately that they were about to put on quite a show.

and now as you stand outside the auction house, surrounded by marines, the sight playing out before you has proven your hunch right. except… your beloved captain is perhaps putting on a bit too much of a performance.

you’d always known Trafalgar Law was a prideful man even if he likes to hide it under a stoic facade but this is the first time you’ve really seen him play up his Devil Fruit abilities. from the way he’s toying with the poor marines and their shambled bodies, you can’t help but feel a little bad for them in the way you would with a child abusing their toys.

“(Y/N)!! check this out!” Luffy demands your attention before throwing his head back several feet and launching it straight at some marines, knocking them over like bowling pins. he grins widely when you smile and clap in response. he really has come a long way since you’ve last seen him.

“yeah, he’s definitely showing off,” Penguin murmurs behind you and your attention is redirected back to your own captain. unexpectedly, your eyes meet and you catch a glimpse of his face flushing red before he looks away and returns to tormenting his enemies. 

“no… surely not,” you reply in a manner so unconvincing it borders on sarcastic. right then, Law shambles five disembodied arms onto one panicked pair of legs and you can’t help but stifle a laugh at the ridiculous sight.

the moment the sound of your laughter reaches your captain, he can’t help but turn back to look at you again, as though wanting to confirm his ears weren’t playing tricks on him. upon seeing your smiling face, he feels a familiar fluttering in his stomach and for a second he’s almost breathless. then, his eyes trail down to your hand where it hovers near your chest and he catches your fingers playing with the ring strung on the necklace around your neck. 

he didn’t realise you’d put it on so quickly and a bitter taste rises up the back of his throat as a tightness forms in his chest. reminded once more of the events that occurred just minutes ago inside the auction house, Law’s unable to stop his mind from wandering once again.

is there anything else you’ve been hiding from us? from me? what was the reason you’d kept your secrets?

he grits his teeth as a feeling of embarrassment washes over his entire body. what is he? some prepubescent child completely unable to manage his emotions? what ridiculous situation to be in especially during a battle–no matter how easy the fight is. if he wants so badly to know why you never told him about your past with Straw Hat and Fire Fist, surely he can just demand the answer from you later as your captain; and if he doesn’t like your answer, he can just kick you out–

his internal rambling is cut short by the sound of a gunshot and the smell of your shampoo.

as his back hits the dirt ground, he catches a glimpse of Shachi, Penguin and Bepo entering the fray to keep the remaining marines a safe distance away from him… and you.

the same you that had pushed him out of the way of a bullet aimed straight at his head. the same you that was currently glaring down at him as you laid on his chest with a deep frown on your face as your eyebrows furrow in pain. once Law’s brain connects the dots and expects the worst, he feels a rush of anger as fear clutches his heart. 

“what’d you think you’re doing–”

“get a grip!” you shout, cutting him off. “what am i doing? what are you doing, Captain?! zoning out in the middle of a fight!” you slap at his chest and it’s then he notices the sliver of tears lining your eyes as he feels a warm liquid soaking into his clothes.

he realised he loved you when your life was in his hands.

months after officially joining the Heart Pirates, the crew was ambushed by a squad of marines and a careless mistake nearly cost Trafalgar Law his life–had you not intervened and taken the hit for him.

as you laid on his operating table, on the verge of death, he wondered if he could ever forgive himself if he failed to bring you back to the side of the living. though his heart raced and ached like never before, his hands were steadier than ever.

“i won’t let you die,” he’d promised your unconscious body. “i can’t let you die. no matter what… and when you wake up, i’ll bring you anywhere you want. i’ll let you do whatever you want. okay? so don’t go.”

a few weeks later, you woke up greeted by the angry and tired face of your captain. 

“what’s wrong with you?” was the first thing he said, in a tone sharper than the scalpels he used. “how could you do such a reckless thing? you nearly died, do you understand–”

“i knew i wouldn’t die,” you replied, voice hoarse from the dryness of your throat. “i trusted that you’d take care of me and i was right, wasn’t i?” you smiled up at him.

although the furious expression remained on his face, he could do nothing to stop the way his cheeks began to blush as he felt a warmth rising up his neck. he knew you saw it, too, when your grin grew wider.

“you mean it?” Law asked in a voice so soft you nearly missed it. “that you trust me?”

“of course i do.” you tilted your head as you replied and before he knew it, he’d leaned forward and captured your lips with his.

ii.

back in your shared hotel room on Sabaody, Law changes the dressing on your torso after finishing the stitches. thankfully, you weren’t hit by the second bullet outside of the auction house. you’d simply torn the first bandage after tackling Law to the ground and ended up aggravating the earlier wound.

you can’t help but notice how quiet he’s been, though. he’s usually so quick to scold you for acting recklessly so you’d learned to be more cautious over the years, just to spare his poor heart. right now, however, as you sit cross-legged across from Law on the hotel bed, surrounded by medical supplies, he’s totally silent.

you wonder if he’s more affected by nearly being shot than you think he is but before you can ask what’s wrong, he speaks up just a little bit quicker.

“i’m sorry i doubted you.”

“huh?” you tilt your head, genuinely unsure what he means.

“i’ll admit i had some… childish feelings earlier about your past with Straw Hat and Fire Fist Ace.” Law stares down at his fingers, physically unable to look you in the eye. it’s one thing to be vulnerable with his feelings, it’s a whole other deal looking at you staring at him as he speaks–he isn’t quite ready for that yet. “i second-guessed the trust between us because i thought you were keeping it a secret for a reason.”

“i’m sorry i never told you or the crew, i just–” he cuts you off by grabbing one of your hands and clasping it gently between his two larger ones.

“no, you don’t have to apologise.” he smiles softly, finally tilting his head up to look at you. “i know now i shouldn’t have jumped to any conclusions without talking to you first… it was silly of me to think you owe me something like that, especially if you don’t see a reason in sharing it.”

Law idly rubs your hand in between his palms before bringing it up to his lips and pressing a kiss to the back of it. your mouth curls into a smile as you feel a light fluttering in your chest at his rare show of affection.

“i trust you,” he says, “wholeheartedly.”

he lets out a satisfied hum when you respond by pulling him into a hug. wrapping his arms around you, he hugs you back a little tighter than usual.

“if you’re still worried about something,” you murmur into his ear while rubbing your hands up and down his back soothingly, “you should tell me. don’t keep it in.” you brush your lips against his jawline and his hold on you tightens even further.

“was… was Fire Fist your boyfriend?” Law asks sheepishly and you can almost imagine the flustered look on his silly face as you bite back the urge to laugh.

“no, he’s also my younger brother.”

“what?” he responds incredulously before peppering your collarbone with small kisses, relieved that his guess had been wrong all along. 

“i had a third brother, too, but he died at sea when we were young.” you feel him nuzzle his face into the crook of your neck in response, tickling your skin. “i like to think he survived though and that he’s out there somewhere.”

“can i ask you one more thing?”

“mhm.”

“if Straw Hat or Fire Fist ever ask you to join their crews, would you?” his voice sounds the meekest you’ve ever heard it, it’s such a rare occurrence that a part of you wonders if all of this is just one weird dream. but you know you’re awake because being hugged in his arms is so warm and soft, it can only be the real thing.

“never,” you reply, pulling your head away to look at his flushed face. “you’re my captain and my partner and nothing will ever change that.”

letting out a quiet chuckle, Law reacts simply by capturing your lips in a kiss.

Let's Get Back! presents the Shockwaves Tour!

[Disclaimer, this is not a real tour, this is just for fun lol]

AAA I have wanted to make a mockup of what a Let's Get Back! tour poster would look like for months now and I finally got enough an idea nailed down to make something!!

This was a super fun project to make!! I'd wanted to do some drawovers of some still shots from the music video for Beat Crusaders and Tropical Gorilla's song Droog In A Slum (the original pics will be below the cut) because I thought they really conveyed the sort of "action shots" I guess that would come from a band being on tour lol. With the originals being black and white as well, I wanted to see how that looked on my guys and I think they look pretty cool hehe

As you can also see, Let's Get Back! is not the only act on this tour! They're joined by Deadmeat as the opening act! Deadmeat is a band made up of @macaronichewtoyz's OCs and drawing my OC band collabing with a friend's OC band is something I've also wanted to do forever :3 If anyone else has an OC band (I know at least one or two more hehe) they will have a LGB! collab at some point !!

In terms of the tour locations, I didn't wanna assign dates to it bc that would have been WAY to complicated for the scope of this project, but in terms of locations, I tried to hit up areas relatively close to where my friends and mutuals live so they'd be able to see the show if it were an actual thing :3

I chose the name the Shockwaves Tour bc A) LGB! is out there making waves in their music scene, shaking things up, B) it ties in with their BLAST! album from earlier this year, C) it just sounds rlly cool as a name, and D) yes it also connects to the show Shockwave which is a subset of a special interest of mine lol. I was rlly happy with this logo tho! The perspective on it especially hehe

do you think Eridan would listen to kpop ? (either the human or Troll variant)

LOL no way, he's a hipster. KPop is mainstream as hell; if anything, he'd have disdain for it (and for pop as a whole). One of the less emotionally perturbed trolls would probably enjoy that stuff, though I don't know that I'd call any of the Alternian crew the kind who'd consider it to be their favorite, since nearly all of them are at least a little alt in some way, and kpop (and idol culture as a whole) is heavily tied up in politics, propaganda, capitalism, and consumption - so the troll version of it would be that times a thousand.

I'd say Feferi, Gamzee, and Kanaya probably quite like it because they're most at ease with their society, but it's not their favorite. Equius probably sees it as being aimed at the lower castes, and therefore crass and beneath him. Everyone else would probably get the propaganda vibes and dislike it on principle, even if some of them might secretly find some songs catchy (cough Karkat cough).

If you want to get into Beforan trolls, haha, oh man. I think more of them would like it than not.

Normally, I'd say that Eridan would at least make a show of liking it, given how much he makes a show of being a Sea Dweller(TM), but his hipster tastes, like his interest in magic, don't appear to be things he can shake. Karkat even calls him a hipster, so you KNOW he's out here dissing Trollor Swift and making disdainful faces when people bring up Troll Marvel.

I have as a selection of bands for Eridan Have a Nice Life (post-rock/post-punk/shoegaze), Sprain (noise rock/experimental rock), and Tool (alternative metal/art rock/progressive rock). Generally, I find he vibes with stuff on the darker side of post/prog rock, or the more lyrical side of heavy metal - both in terms of themes (lots of darker topics, like death, murder, suicide, child abuse, etc.) and in terms of sound. It also fulfills the requirement of being "hipster" by nature. Eridan is a very troubled, angry, violent guy, and I personally like to call the linked bands "angry man music". Just a smattering of lyrics for those who don't want to listen:

Fate’s a funny thing It makes a victim of the will and brings a suit of broken bands A snake so full of tail That it can barely breathe to say it “doesn’t understand.” So, what am I to think? Like, I really can't stress enough, but Eridan is abjectly fucking miserable, angry and violent, anxious and unhappy. And his taste in music should reflect that, his feelings of impotence, his angry and anxious energy, his desperation. Have a Nice Life is probably the band I pick for him, because their discography reflects so greatly these emotions of anger, impotence, self-loathing and self-destruction.

The thing about being a hipster is that there's, the way I see it, three main reasons people wind up falling into it - the first is that they want to feel special, feel better than other people (not really Eridan's deal); the second is that they're just generally a music liker and their taste is indiscriminate enough to include indie stuff, too (and this is also not really Eridan's deal); and the last is because there is something in their soul that cries out for validation that they can't receive in the mainstream - for example, emotions, impulses, thoughts, and urges too dark for radio play (such as an obsession with genocide and murder). It's actually really important to me that Eridan IS a hipster, and specifically the type of hipster who's super pretentious and looks down on stuff that's "popular."

He has a massive fixation on being understood - complaining constantly that people don't "get it," that "nobody understands." This would extend to his taste in music. He would seek out genuine-ness, something grungy, something real, and unfortunately, stuff that's made for mass-market consumption must have the edges sanded off by nature. Given he actually gets upset when people don't "get" him, I'd wager that he doesn't treat media that he feels doesn't "get" him pretty poorly, too.

To be clear, I'm not trying to diss KPop in any way. It's not really my thing, but I get why people like it, and I'm not saying you shouldn't. Just feel like I have to toss that in there. I just really don't think Eridan would like it. And also he would probably be mean about it if you told him you liked it.

Until he asked her what happened.

Then she folded inward-- arms crossing over her chest, her gaze turning away-- as if refusing to look at him might allow her to ignore the question entirely. He tied the dressing in a neat knot, but didn't withdraw. His hands lingered, fingers tapping a slow, teasing path higher along the outside of her thighs. "Were you sparring?"

Her leg twitched against his palm, a subtle press toward his touch. "No."

Illario hummed in reply, then dipped to press his lips to the soft, uninjured skin just above the bandage, taking full advantage of her bare legs while she tolerated the indulgence. "Did someone attack you, unprovoked?"

A scoff this time, short and dismissive. He placed a second kiss, higher still. "Not likely."

Smiling, he slid his hands to her hips and tugged her closer, possessive. "Did you trip and fall on your dagger?" he murmured, deliberately provoking now, and laughed when her fingers tangled into his hair, giving him a sharp, wordless reprimand.

"Have you ever seen me fall? In all the years you've known me?"

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he continued his languid path along her skin, brushing his mouth across the apex of her thighs, before beginning on the opposite leg. "Once."

Despite Yu giving MC the plush he bought himself he is still insanely jealous of it, he wants to be the one MC cuddles with every night, comforts them whenever they cry and of course the one MC gives kisses to. 100% going with the "only people that know me really well can use my real name" canon, because I love that scene and moment so much (and the lil nod to it again in the Tower Ending with Johnny ;_;). In my hc, Jackie gave him the nickname "V" on the day they met. Up until then he had always insisted on the full "Vincent" with everyone, and Jackie was the one to urge him to be careful with whom he shares his full identity. Meanwhile it's the other way around and "Vincent" is reserved for friends only... and "Vince" exclusively for Kerry really xD

The second after his top surgery, when he already worked for Arasaka, as a reminder to stay true to himself on the inside, especially whenever he couldn't outwardly. He just likes the lotus aesthetically, the shapes and symmetry, and that it symbolizes rebirth and transformation.

Something that I think we don't talk about enough is Beetlejuice and all the cartoonish sound effects that follow him.

This is rambly, but I'm making this surface-level analysis/speculation/headcanon everyone else's problem. >:3c

Ignoring the cartoon (since that's expected in the soundscape of an animated show aimed at younger audiences), Beetlejuice himself is accompanied by over-the-top sound effects in the film and musical that just aren't really present for other characters (at least not in the same way they are for him). While it's obviously to make his scenes funnier, I love the idea of them being an extension of his magic. Either he finds it funny for his actions to be accompanied by goofy sounds and times them himself for comedic effect, or they're a totally subconscious thing/he doesn't even need to think about doing it.

Especially in the context of moviejuice being more malicious than his counterparts, it's an unsettling dichotomy of this centuries-old conartist/manipulator being accompanied by goofy noises. And, if he chooses to actively magic these sounds into exiestence when he's interacting with the people he's tormenting, it implies that he enjoys the victims' suffering and finds it funny enough to go the extra mile to make it humiliating. They do seem to be tied more to when his magic is being used rather than happening in response to what he's physically doing.

I feel like the idea of intentional sound effects is true of musicaljuice, too. Yeah, he's meant to be more sympathetic while still being manipulative and selfish, so I feel like he does it to make himself goofier since he's so painfully lonely and lacks social skills (literally being invisible will do that). It could also be because of some anxiety, but I don't want to project too hard. I'd even go so far as to say that he thinks the sound effects make him less-intimidating.

There's some evidence to suggest that the sound effects are intentionally done since musicaljuice breaks the fourth wall in multiple instances across slight variations of the show (DC, Broadway, tour). Whether it's putting on a show to intentionally mislead the Maitlands/Deetzs (and by extension the audience), or trying to come off as funny in the hopes that it'll make up for his more obvious flaws, it's anyone's guess. Personally, with how desperate he is for friends and for someone to break his curse (we know he's not above manipulating people), I'm more inclined to believe it's a little bit of both.

That said, I also like the idea of them being a result of how Beetlejuice (musicaljuice specifically) interacts with the material world. He's an anomally (half-ghost-half-demon) at best and an abomination at worst. There's a part of me that wonders if the physical world outside of the Netherworld cannot handle his very existence without an assortment of "glitches" happening as a result of his mere presence (like the stretching sound that happens when he phases through walls and tables for example).

And, to really stick to my wishy washy thoughts on the whole thing, the toony sound effects are a bit of both. A reminder that the world of the living can't really handle his existence, but he's embraced it and made it his own. It's now a part of his shtick. It defines him as different, but he owns it and has as much fun with it as he can, or manipulates the ability when he sees fit.

And you know I will be abusing the toony sound effects thing in anything I end up writing.

Before I start, I’m going to quickly clarify the difference between respawning and permashifting, just to make sure you make the best choice! (Affs and advice included at the end.) :>

To quickly remind everyone:

Respawning is shifting and scripting that you completely forget your OR/CR. It is completely cutting ties with your original reality, and is irreversible. IT DOES NOT MEAN DYING IN THIS REALITY!!! A version of you will still remain behind, so absolutely DO NOT give up on life here, or make plans to end your own life! It will not, in any way, help to do that. /srs

(I urgently repeat, do not attempt to hurt yourself or take your own life just because you’re desperate to shift. Dying is a long-term solution to temporary problems, and will only forward pain onto those around you, as well as those you care about. Respawning is not about that. Dying is not part of respawning. Self-harm of any kind is not part of respawning. It will not help. Please, take care of yourselves and stay safe.)

Permashifting is shifting and simply not coming back. You still remember your OR/CR perfectly well, but you just willingly don’t come back. This decision is reversible, should you so choose to come back, someday.

So Respawning is permanent, and Permashifting is reversible!

Now that that’s cleared up, affirmations for respawning, permashifting, and regular shifting are generally pretty similar.

Any normal affirmations will work, such as “I am shifting”/”I have shifted”/”I am my desired self”/etc etc. That said, there are specific subliminals for respawning which you might find particularly useful! Since it’s such a big decision, I’d recommend ‘shopping around’ a bit on youtube to find some good, reliable sources (should you choose to use them), such as channels like Slade, Kween Subs, and mxrahki. :>

Something that could also help (and that helps in general with shifting) is affirming things specific to your DR self, but as if they’re already true and present in your reality surrounding you. Examples could include affirming your DR self’s name (like saying “My name is XYZ”) or where you live, as well as where you intend to wake up.

If you’re looking for basic affirmations, though, a good list would include smth along the lines of:

I am in my desired reality. I have respawned into my desired reality. I am pure consciousness. I am choosing to experience my desired reality. I am a master shifter. Shifting is as simple as breathing. I shift often.

Alternatively, some people find it easier to phrase the affirmations like questions! This is also an option to try out, if you believe it could help! Those would go more along the lines of:

Why is shifting so easy for me? Why can’t I stop shifting? Why do I shift every time I try? Why do I always shift on the first try? Why do I shift so often? How am I this good at shifting?

TLDR: Shifting affirmations between respawning, permashifting, and normal shifting aren't all that different, as it's still the same process, just with a slightly different end result.

Y'know what, I am asking myself to mention what I remember about how I got adopted by Dadzawa and Papamic, lol.

Lol, love this memory. This is about what led up to me actually being adopted by them. This happened sometime after moving into the dorms, not long after cause Eri wasn't around yet.

Start of the memory:

Me and Izuku were in either mine or his room, I can't quite remember which one or what exactly we were doing, I think we were just hanging out on our phones.

Anyways, Aizawa walks in to ask us something, I think [I don't remember exactly what he said, lol]. I do remember not looking up and saying something like, "What's up, dad?" Once I processed what I had said, I just went widewide-eyed and stopped doing what I was doing on my phone, and blinked a few times to try and make sense of why and how that came out of my mouth, lol.

He asked me to repeat what I said, but I (almost) didn't want to bc I was slightly embarrassed, lol, but Zuku decides to repeat it for me [thanks annoying little shit], and dad asked me something like "Would you actually want me to be your dad?" And I was like "Yeah I didn't have much of a father figure growing up, and you're a great dad to Shinso."

Dad said something about working on adopting me, and once he left the room, I turned to look at Izuku and asked something like, "Did he just say something about adopting me?" And Izu just nods before going back to what he was doing as I just stare dumbfounded at the wall of the room.

End of the memory

It's awesome and shit to look back on this memory. I'm also gonna remind people that I was 18 when this happened there, lol. The best part was Eraserhead and Present Mic were my two favorite heroes (tied for 1st favorite, lol), so to be adopted by them was amazing. I will definitely go into other memories more. HI HI HI PUNCT thank you so much for asking this is a very good and interesting question. To do a short answer long answer style thing--short answer, I don't imagine Ethan being interested in composing. He's just such a performer, it's so coded into him, i can't imagine composing being more than a passing hobby. Long answer, the IMF transformation point is an excellent one. There's definitely such a distinct shift that takes place through the franchise from Ethan being the victim/tool/scapegoat of this organization, to him finding his own kind of power and independence and using that to take care of people, look after his people, and create a new kind of IMF. I definitely am imagining the AU will have a version of that, but I think for Ethan in the classical music AU it will manifest in a couple different ways. First of all I think Ethan's relationship with leadership in MI will translate pretty neatly into a complex push-pull relationship with the idea of music teaching. MI3 Ethan becomes a teacher, which for him is an escape from the field. My equivalent of MI3 Ethan in CM AU, i am imagining, will do something similar as an escape from performance--but because of his experiences with music teachers in the past, which have been universally exploitative, it ends up becoming more emotionally charged than he expected. Something like GP Ethan's journey with having a team that looks to him for direction. I imagine private teaching and ethan's relationship with the horror of the power dynamics therein will work as an allegory both for Ethan's relationship with villains such as Jim and Lane and Ethan's relationship with IMF (MI often presents the IMF and the enemies it sends ethan after as being pretty interchangeable). And Ethan gradually growing into someone who's willing to take on the responsibility and authority that others have used to hurt him and the people he loves...and trust himself with that, trust that he won't hurt anyone, and do his best to use that power to take care of people who need him...I feel like that's the main way that the 'shifting IMF' arc in MI will be represented in the CM AU. There's another facet here of Ethan's relationship with his own team, which is a whole other can of worms. Ethan in CM AU struggles near constantly with the issue of his own helplessness to protect the people he cares about from getting hurt by the system they're in. That's something he deals with in a lot of ways--particularly, once they are out of school, and in the professional world, I think there's some element of Ethan trying to develop personal ties into professional collaboration through chamber music, keeping in touch, doing everything he can to create a "team" that he can look out for. And I think it probably works to some extent, and in a lot of ways ends up being healthier than the MI team cause they're allowed to have their own full lives.

A lot of this will also probably change as I start to work my way through the later movies! I have preliminary ideas through RN but it's not written out or formalized much.

man!!! okay excellent question. i think ill still do three but ill talk about different things with each one; bear in mind that this is like, off the top of my head, so its not Definitive (ill try to sneak em in as honorable mentions but even stuff with a huge impact on me is gonna be harder to think of/talk about if it was like ten years ago, yknow?)

Kill Six Billion Demons

this one probably has to be The Bar for quality in my mind, at least at the moment.

82 White Chain Born In Emptiness Returns To Subdue Evil (yes, full name) has maybe one of the most compelling character arcs i've ever read;

the art is stunning, and the worldbuilding incredibly thorough (in a way that makes the history of the world feel dynamic and relevant, rather than just being tons of lore to sift through);

the fights whip ass and the logic of the cool shit that the characters do is directly tied to the underlying view the story has about Power™, which directly influenced my thought process for a lot of the plot details of "Dawnsister";

and, sort of related to the two previous points, the entire thing is just so fucking coherent, thematically speaking. all the side stories and bits of hover text, all the bits of commentary and passages from fictional manuscripts in the image descriptions, weave together and do some really good allegorical storytelling for the messages Abaddon wants to send (and to underline/counterpoint whats happening in the comic itself), and the details tend to come back later to be relevant in a big way

its just. high marks on literally every metric i can think of. this is the kind of "every line (both kinds) is crammed with intent and nothing is wasted" stuff i wanna do with my writing

(honorable mention for this category: Everything Everywhere All At Once, for sheer quality of writing and similar levels of "god they planned this from the fucking start". one of the only films to make me cry)

Homestuck (im not linking it we all know this one)

i have less to say about this, but i think its one of the stories that's had the biggest stylistic impact on my writing. i was kind of doing it even before reading homestuck but it SUPER cemented it: the 2nd-person voice and the fuckery where a character's thoughts, the narrator's description of a scene, and instructions from the audience/in-universe sources of Brain Interference all blend together is something i keep coming back to in both 3rd-person limited perspective AND 2nd-person (typically transformation-related) work

it also takes all the "using every possible avenue for Additional Storytelling" thing that i was describing about KSBD and ratchets it the fuck up. like this comic is repeatedly the benchmark for "what kind of weird, media-mixing, format-breaking shit can i do with comic panels and text rendering", even if i dont plan to dabble in webpage shenanigans like Hussie did

(i cant think of an honorable mention here, but i liked the way Tyranny presented lore and history to you in hyperlinks in the text, so that you could just HAVE background information your character would have instead of having to Do Exposition. also check out Vast Error if you liked the shit homestuck was doing with multimedia storytelling)

Ascension: Tales of Twin Tails

this one is just one of my favorites. out of this list its for sure been the most impactful on me personally, in like an identity sense at least. this shit transed my gender and othered my kin. its one of the only OTHER pieces of media to ever make me teary-eyed. its about being transgender extremely literally but also in some really creative And Also Extremely Dope ways

the fight scenes are about as grand in scope as the ones in KSBD, and the way that magic works in the setting is just about as thematically-strong (and also offer lots of room for insight about the characters, as well as self-reflection for the reader to have fun with).

the relationships are really, really well-done, and there are scenes that stick with me two years later as just strikingly and stunningly tender and intimate and vulnerable; the characters are just as strong (Coyotl is like, Top Three with White Chain, and if you know anything about me at all you know that Cat Kitten became my entire identity for months after reading it)

read it please read it i will evangelize this novel until the end of time

(honorable mention as far as having an effect on Me As A Person is probably like..... Night in the Woods; super super natural dialogue, lots of compelling relationship turmoil and hit some fears that were Extremely Relevant to me at the time of my life that i played it)
