THE GREAT & TERRIBLE OZ
My own take on an adaptation for the Oz series of books by L. Frank Baum! I've been working on this project for a bit over a year and it's honestly become my baby and one of the things I'd most like to one day somehow make. I really care for it a lot, and I'll hopefully most much more about it in the near future!

Tip right now: 🐣
From Marvelous Land of Oz:
“I hope none of you will care less for me than you did before. I’m just the same Tip, you know; only—only—” “Only you’re different!” said the Pumpkinhead; and everyone thought it was the wisest speech he had ever made.

Princess Ozma and her male alter-ego, Tip.
Art Commissions done by Kris Dobbins.
I've done many artworks featuring my versions of Ozma and Tip in the past, but it's fun and important for me to see how other artists interpret and draw them too. Mainly because it helps me see which character features stand out and which aspects need work.
Tip was the first one commissioned out of the artist's choice (I gave them the option between the two), and their reasoning is that they like the hat. Can't blame them. The hat really gives that street urchin, mischievous aura to Tip. Sort of like Aladdin or Artful Dodger. But I'm glad they choose Tip first because a design philosophy I had with making Tip and Ozma is that Tip is the baseline design for both character (as Tip is introduced first before Ozma). Tip has to look like a boy first and foremost, and Ozma has to look like Tip even with a royal princess dress, crown, and long hair. They are the same character, after all. Two sides of the same coin.
For Ozma, you may notice that her pendant on her neck is no longer an Oz emblem, but rather a circular cross with five shiny gems. Well that's because when I saw the commission early sketch, I found the two Oz logos (one on the head, one on the neck) to be too close to each other and it's rather distracting. Previous artists did these two Oz emblems, and they didn't distract me before. But then I realize it's because they drew the full body of Ozma and as a result, the Oz emblems were relatively tiny and didn't register as distracting. Here, this headshot makes the redundant details a lot more visible.
The circular cross is actually based on Ozma's pendant illustrated in the books, which I had initially tried to draw on my Ozma's design in the past... but it never turned out the way I like, which was why I went for the Oz emblem for a long time. But Kris Dobbins did a sketch of the novel pendant and not only did they made it work, but it gave me an idea of what the pendant is. Four circles with a jewel in the center? That's like a compass: North, East, West, South. And what is the Land of Oz famous for? So pendant has five gems that represent a land of Oz. Blue for East, Purple for North, Yellow for West, Red for South, and Emerald for Emerald City. And for the record, West and East are deliberately flipped.
What both designs share in common is how lively they are. They feel like cartoon characters come to life (and this shouldn't be surprising since Kris Dobbins is a professional artist who worked on cartoons and comics). And this honestly inspires me to keep going on my little Oz project. Already, I've begun making more Dorzma artwork for the coming month of June.

I think Tip/Princess Ozma will be in Part 2 due to a character I just realized was mentioned in part 1 initial scene. The professor (I don't know his name) mentioned Professor Mombi, head of the Biology department.
It's definitely not just a random name, especially how inform the cast- Ariana, for example- and directors are of Oz lore.
Hopefully, it will further concrete that part 3 will happen. That, and hopefully, she and Dorothy will meet in the end.

Well, some of them anyways
I'm gonna copy paste something from tiktok (the app not the metal man [I'm so funny]) so the actual order they're in is
Dorothy Gale, Tippetarius/Tipp, Ozma, (skip a few), Betsy Bobbins, and Trot
The following is a copy and paste from a tiktok speedpaint of these designs
in order: Trot 14 [1940s] (Scarecrow Of Oz), Dorothy Gale 10 [1900] (Wizard of oz look specifically), Ozma 14 (Ozma of Oz specifically), Tippetarius 'Tipp' 12 (Marvelous land of Oz [I miss him severely shout out to authors who let him live and make them siblings]) And Betsy Bobbins 16 [1990's] (TikTok of Oz)
context for why they all come from different time periods:
tldr is I think its more fun
long answer
I thought its be interesting to have Oz, while being a fairy land on 'Earth', being disconnected from the rest of the non-magical world both in space and in time. So the land of Oz is relatively timeless though time passes just oddly and inconsistently (but thats mainly me being a horrid writer when it comes to timelines)
So, the other characters who aren't from Oz such as the Wizard, who came from the 70s (he was about 12-14 when he showed up I'll explain it more if anyones intrested), but when he tries to leave with Dorothy, he ends up back in the 1910s, rather than where he left or would've been if he had stayed. also I think it'd be incredibly funny for someone to give Dorothy pop rocks (that someone is betsy im rewriting her heavily she bored me a lot and was missed potential)
the shaggy man is from around the 1930s along with his brother, the braided man the 1920s shortly after the great depression, Zeb is obviously from around the same time as Dorothy, but about 4 years after the events of the first book, Button Bright is from the late 1940s but is around the same age as Trot. I'm only to rinkatink in Oz and I dont know if there's any new non ozians introduced after Trot and Captain Bill, but I'll Update when anything changes.
Date Made: January 7, 2025

Tip X Logan got 15.8% last time I did this poll.
I'm curious to see if my little webcomic changed the public opinion of this ship at all.

An update of Princess Ozma's design.
Funny thing about character designs. There's always room to tweak it even after having the model sheet established for about two years or so. And that's mainly due to seeing how other artists draw my depiction of Ozma. You often learn what stands out and what needs improvement.
In this case, it's Ozma's necklace that I wanted to do a little revision. Originally, it was a simple emerald ring around her neck. But it was too boring, so I tried to add an ornament at the center to make it look fancy. Originally, it was the book circular cross ornament, but I found the design to be too complex at first due to having four circular holes. So it was changed into a simple Oz emblem. And it has been the staple of my Ozma's design in both my art and other people's fan arts (like rocketdave's art here).
But during a commission discussion with artist Kris Dobbins, who is on BlueSky and Instagram, for headshot artworks of Ozma/Tip, I realized in hindsight that having two Oz emblems close to each other (one on the head, the other on the neckline) creates a redundancy of details that is actually distracting. Ozma only needs one Oz emblem, and that shall always be her headpiece just like the books and adaptations. But this left the question of what to replace the Oz emblem on the neckline with. I remember the cross ornament, but I couldn't get it to look right for a long time. Luckily, Kris Dobbins did a rough sketch of the novel's cross ornament, which made me realized something:
Tumblr media
The four circles and the tiny gem look like a compass. Like the four lands of Oz plus Emerald City. I realized that the ornament should have five gems embedded to represent the lands that Ozma rules. And thus, I updated my design for 2025.
I should also note the gems are oriented to Baum's Oz map where East and West are reversed. I actually debated on whether using the correct orientation or just use Baum's original depiction and "mistake". But I decided to go with the reversed map because it's the Land of Oz, not real life Earth. Having East and West flipped is a good indication that, to be cliché, we're not in Kansas anymore.
