Pokémon Pocket Monsters BW Volume 1 - Chapter 2

Clefairy and the others dine at a restaurant. Unknown to them that it is actually an official Pokémon gym.

The second chapter and we get to our first gym battle! It's too bad it doesn't last for that long... I'm guessing that Clefairy's tea was enough to satisfy their tastebuds and earn Red the Trio Badge.

Regarding the Gym Leaders, Cilan, Chili, and Cress, there's not much I can say about them. What I can say is that they have a strong bond with each other. They're also incredibly modest and never claim that one brother is cooler than the other. I found that to be a very nice take on these characters.

One interesting thing to note is that halfway through the story, Clefairy urges the brothers to quit their jobs as Gym Leaders and devote more time to the restaurant. This does manage to work for a while before the three go back to being Gym Leaders. While it might have been a coincidence, the Striaton City Pokémon gym is converted into a full-fledged restaurant in Pokémon Black Version 2 and White Version 2.

You can also battle the brothers every day for additional money and experience. (You also get TM83 for beating them for the first time.) By using this short scene, Anakubo single-handedly foreshadowed the fate of the Striaton City gym in the next Pokémon games. I know it's a coincidence. But it's still amazing that someone was able to predict something from future Pokémon titles that were still being conceived at the time.

Pokémon X Chapter 4: The Bug Gym

With my newly solidified (and more balanced) team all set, it's time to give the first gym a try!

Approaching a building that I'm pretty sure is the gym (it is), I talk to the person standing in front. They offer me a pair of Roller Skates if I beat them in a Pokémon battle. I feel like it would be rude to refuse, plus I do want the skates, so I accept.

This mystery person is revealed to be Roller Skater Rinka, whose level 7 zigzagoon proves to be no match for Browser. The fight is over quickly, and I get the Roller Skates. I now am a lot faster when I move around, although I crash into things a lot. Ah well, I guess I'll get better with practice...?

Entering the gym, I meet...this guy.

Something about this just cracks me up.

Yep. I'm supposed to be in charge of strategy, I guess? But the Pokémon are really doing the work, which is nice to see acknowledged.

After admiring the photos on display, I slide down the pole, and land in a sort of spiderweb.

Youngster David is the first trainer I encounter here. His ledyba is level 10, making me feel like my team might be just a smidge underleveled - or exactly on level. We'll find out. Either way, Batman knocks it out with two Pecks.

After a slightly embarassingly long time figuring out how to traverse the web, I then encounter Lass Charlotte, who leads with a level 7 kakuna. Browser oneshots the kakuna with an Ember and levels up to level 12, and I switch to Batman to deal with Charlotte's level 9 combee. Two Pecks later, and Batman is now level 11 and the fight is over.

At the end of the web path, I finally get to meet Viola, the photographer gym leader.

Oh nice, I like this style of battle intros, they look cool.

The music becomes very funky and full of pounding synths and droning guitars, which sets the stage nicely. Viola leads with a level 10 surskit while I lead with Browser, so I switch to Batman because I don't want Browser getting hit with a water type move. This turns out to be a good call, since the surskit's first move is Water Sport. Batman then gets hit by a Quick Attack, but continues using the strategy of "just hecking Peck it to death". The same exact thing happens next turn, but that's enough to take out the surskit. Since Batman took some hits, I swap back to Browser, who's at full hp, to deal with Viola's Vivillion.

The Vivillion starts with Tackle. Browser's Ember is super effective, but apparently not quite as powerful as I'd hoped here...which I realize is because Water Sport is still active. It wears off at the end of the next turn, however, so after Browser takes a second Tackle hit things are looking better. Browser gets inflicted with an Infestation, but his third Ember is a lot more powerful.

It's looking a lot closer now, so it all comes down to this turn.

I can't swap pokémon thanks to Infestation, so I have to hope Browser has enough health to take another hit. After getting hit with another Infestation, Browser's fourth Ember is enough to knock out the vivillion...and level Browser up to 14, which gives him Flame Charge (which should pair nicely with Howl).

And that's the gym!

With a shiny new Bug Badge acquired, along with TM83 Infestation, I exit back to the main entrance. The person in the front room tells me I should go to the Pokémon Lab in Lumiose City to show the badge to Professor Sycamore, which feels like the next big plot point. Route 4 is first, though.

Exiting the gym, I skate my way back to the Pokémon Center, heal up my team, and teach Infestation to Thesaurus. I then buy some more Pokéballs and head over towards Route 4.

At the entrance to Route 4, Viola's sister Alexa, a journalist, gives me an Exp Share, allowing all Pokémon on my team to get Exp Points, even if they're not participating in the battle (yippee!).

And now it's time for...Route 4.

I start by wandering the mazes on either side of the path, but I shortly encounter Gardener Wheaton. Wheaton's corphish is a bit scary for Browser, but luckily I planned ahead last time and I have counters for water types, so I switch to Glorfindel. The fight is over after two Vine Whips, and Batman levels up to 12 thanks to the Exp Share (oh this is going to make leveling up my team so much easier compared to gen v).

With the first mazes explored, I move to checking out the tall grass (covered with flowers here) for some encounters. The first pokémon I find is a flabébé who I name "Paul". Next is a combee, who I name "Barry". After a bit, I find a ledyba who I name "Mischief", and Volta levels up to 11. Basil and Glorfindel also reach level 11 after the next encounter, along with Thesaurus one encounter later. I also catch another flabébé (this one's red), who I name "Onion Jr", after I remember that they have different colors.

After more encounters, Batman levels up to level 13 and learns Agility. I then find a white flabébé who I name "Nucleus", because it's almost 1am for me at this point and I'm tired. After Basil gets beaten up by another ledyba, I decide that that's enough for tonight and head back to the Santalune City Pokémon Center to heal up my team.

Next time, I'll continue down Route 4 - it looks like there's an interesting fountain up ahead.

he doesn’t think about how strange it is to knock on the wall of virbank’s gym (that doubles as a music club), but it’s done and he seems to fall on deaf ears. at least he brush it off and pretend it didn’t happen. for now cheren looks towards the stage and then he walks over, pressing his hands to the edge of the stage.

“roxie!” he lifts his voice a little to try to cut into the loud racket. “will you stop playing? i’m in town.”

            Truthfully, I don’t think Ash fully understands shiny pokemon. I think he just sees a strange colored pokemon and goes ‘wow that’s a strange colored pokemon. Neat!’ and moves on. Out of the ones he’s seen though? He really liked the color pallet for shiny gardevoir!

There was a gentle smile on his face, as he rested his head on Eusine’s shoulder. For once, they finally had some proper time for each other. There weren’t any gym challenges that day, and the other wasn’t in a hurry to leave the city.

At long last, they finally had some resemblance of peace.

The blond was starting to feel drowsy, which was something extremely rare for him, it was a sign that his guard had been completely lowered. The faint sound of Eusine’s heartbeats, had a powerful soothing effect on him. To a point, it was becoming increasingly difficult for him to keep his eyes open.

His Gengar could feel tell exactly how his master felt in that moment, and as such he didn’t even dare to make a single noise, as to not disturb him.

However, before he could fall into a state of slumber, Morty was met with a gentle kiss over his lips. Eusine’s lips were ever so soft and tender, it was like a blessing. A low humming came from him, as his eyes partially opened and the smile widened on his face. “Eusine...” He uttered out faintly once their lips parted, purple hues met those light blue eyes and stared intently at them for awhile.

There was no need to say anything else, the small exchange of looks between them spoke by itself.

‘You’re safe, you can rest now, I love you.’
