I worry about Rottmnt's future. I want this show to get another season and I know there is a big fanbase around it but the nickelodeon treats it just dampens my mood. I don't have nicktoons so I have to find some other place to watch it. I look at the score and know it deserves to be higher. All I can do is continue giving good reviews, letting people know about it, and begging nickelodeon on twitter to treat it right and renew it.

You're doing everything you can and it's definitely appreciated! Part of me believes the show will be fine, because there's a Netflix movie going to happen, and Netflix tends to pick up a franchise that another company puts down.

Nick might have reasons for not promoting it, but I've given up on that ever since there were Netflix rumors from Kevin himself about both a potential Netflix series that would return to the gritty source (which predates the Seth Rogan film being discussed), and the confirmation that the Rise movie was still happening on Netflix.

Nick still needs to take responsibility for promoting its property here, regardless, and the fandom is still full of older people, up to my own age peers, who just cannot handle a reboot that doesn't do everything they want to resemble the incarnations they grew up on.

I need to take this post and my post about "Leonardo The Honor Nerd" and frame them and throw them at fans who are still whining and complaining and hating.

Why it’s great in Rise for Leo to BECOME the leader instead of STARTING as one

I’ve been thinking about this a lot and discussing this with friends in our private TMNT chat. I just wanted to share my musings about why I think it’s actually a good thing. Not is it only a nod to the original Mirage comics, I think it’s important to Leo’s development as a character.  

In Rise, Leo has shown different, but in some ways, the same insecurities that other incarnations of Leo have. In previous incarnations, Leo has always felt pressured and stressed about feeling incompetent and being unable to protect/guide the family. Rise Leo has that same issues, but it’s enhanced by the fact that he isn’t the leader.

“I’m useless.” - Leo, Minotaur Maze

“I’m nothing without them [my brothers].” - Leo, Portal Jacked

Looking some Rise episodes like Minotaur Maze and Portal Jacked, Leo feels like he’s the load to his brothers. He’s the only one of the brothers who hasn’t really mastered their weapon properly yet (Mikey and Raph have pretty good control of their new weapons while Donnie only has minor hiccups on his tech bo). He’s getting better, but as Portal Jacked proves, he still feels like he’s nothing without his brothers. Leo gets very eager in opportunities that allow him to step up or become ‘better’. This is why he got so excited in Minotaur Maze to become a champion or why he embraced becoming a pro wrestler in Shell in a Cage. Although perhaps he knew inside that the title meant  very little, he just wants a title to prove to others and most importantly himself that he’s not nothing. Inside, Rise Leo believes that he’s nothing, useless, and he’s desperate to prove himself.

In previous incarnations, it sometimes felt (to me) that being a leader was a heroic burden Leos had to take, that becoming one meant taking on the responsibilities no one else wanted; basically to take one for the team. I keep thinking back to 2003 Mikey’s deconstruction of Leo’s character:

“I think you all should just lay off the poor guy [Leonardo]. I mean, it can’t be fun always being the responsible one. And we’re the ones who really benefit: Raph’s free not to think cause Leo does all the thinking for him, Don’s free to dream, and I’m free to take it easy all because Leo’s busy being responsible enough for all of us.” - Mikey, TMNT 2003 

In Rise, instead of leadership being a burden, it’s actually something that will build up Leo’s character (not that the burden thing it’s bad, it’s just a different take). Not only will it give Leo purpose, but it’ll also help improve the low opinion Leo has on himself that he keeps hiding by the classic Superiority Inferiority Complex / Sad Clown shtick. It will build up his confidence and it’s great to see this development of a teen who suffers from feeling that he’s nothing, something a lot of people face in life, to step up and realize, 'Hey, I am something’.

I also think that this development for Leo is going to be an interesting one for Raph. Rise Raph sort of designated himself as the leader because he’s the oldest. He doesn’t like taking orders from anyone else, and he’s happy that way. I don’t think Raph is a bad leader, he’s honestly doing good and the best he can, which is all anyone can ask for… but admittedly, he isn’t super great. He doesn’t think things through and he sometimes doesn’t have that intuition that comes with decision making. In fact, Leo is doing a lot of backseat leader-ing when opportunities arise, having great leadership qualities and intuition, things which Raph unfortunately lacks as a leader. Even Donnie has shown that he trusts Leo almost unconditionally when he wasn’t even paying attention in the conversation at hand, automatically agreeing with Leo in a debate between Raph and Leo (in Hot Soup: The Game).

I’d like to think that Raph knows deep inside that he may not be the best choice as leader for his brothers, so he feels pressured and may be prone to lashing out when tensions get high (shown a bit in Mascot Melee).

My analysis and prediction is that Raph will have to learn the hard heartbreaking and important lesson that will test the bond between Leo and Raph: Sometimes, being a great leader isn’t about making hard choices or organizing the people, it’s knowing when you need to step down and let someone else takes the reigns and lead. It’s a hard lesson to learn and Raph realizing that will be one of the most emotional and mature moments in the show, I feel it.

It’s always said the real adventure is the journey not the destination; and I’m hella excited and happy to see Leo’s journey to becoming more confident with himself and becoming leader, as well as the subsequent character development Raph has to go through about stepping down as leader. Also I’m not ruling out the possibility that Rise Leo might face some of the same stresses that come with being a leader in addition to the journey to become one.

These are just all my thoughts anyway :P

TL;DR - It’s great that we see Rise Leo become a leader instead of starting as one since we get to see his development from a guy who has poor opinion of himself that he hides under jokes and a Superiority Inferiority Complex to a confident leader. Also having Raph learn the lesson that sometimes a good leader knows when it’s time to step down and let someone else lead.

Toot Your Own Horn!

In conjunction with the TMNT Universal Reader’s Choice Awards and for the third year in a row, TMNT Discourse leads the way in encouraging the TMNT fandom to Toot Your Own Horn!

This is the time of year where you get the chance to recognize your favorite fandom writers/creators/artists.  The starting point for that is of course the nominating process.

You may think “Oh that’s easy!  I’ve read so many great stories and seen such great art that I can nominate a lot of things.”

But then when you’re faced with the nomination ballot, you freeze like a deer in headlights. Why?  Because you can’t remember all you’ve consumed over the past year. You can’t remember which of your favorite writers created a certain story, or which artist drew that comic you enjoyed.

That’s the purpose of “Toot Your Own Horn”.  Yes, we want fandom creators to self-promote.  You should, you deserve the recognition for your hard work. There is nothing wrong with saying “Hey, I was here. I left my mark.”

But that isn’t the only reason to make a list of your work.  It helps those of us who are filling out our nomination ballots to remember the things we’ve consumed over the past year.  It helps us to find the things we’ve loved.

It also helps us to make nominations in categories we might not be familiar with.  Did you create an amazing music video?  Did you go in-depth with a profound meta-post?  Those aren’t always easy to find.

Please take a few minutes and make a list for us of your qualifying works for the past year. Works that qualify must have been started or updated in 2017.  They don’t have to be completed works, so long as some part of it was posted in 2017.

In addition, works that placed either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in any prior year Universal type competition do not qualify.  If the work won a contest or competition on DA but not one of the Universal comps, then it still qualifies.

A small rant on Facebook

Behold, why I can't deal with the fandom on Facebook. The hatred of the Rise of the TMNT.

Guys, can you get over your sadness about 2012 being over and your insistence that Rise be cancelled? It won't bring back 2012.

Rise may not catch your eye, but Kevin Eastman himself adores it, and so do millions of fans.

Rise pays homage to Mirage and 2003: Mirage April being black (or biracial if you want to fight), the Battle Nexus, Mirage Leo not being leader for a long while, Mirage Raph using tonfas, Mirage Leo dressing as an old lady.

You keep insulting something that reveals and revels in decades of franchise history just because you are so bitter that Ciro Nieli's fanfic ended, a fanfic that got to be part of the franchise because Nieli had resources. 2012 was amazing and opened a whole new world up for the franchise and the fandom, and it will go down in history. But it's over and you need to quit using it to bludgeon Rise.

Rise loves its history and lore, and the millions of us old fans who love it will keep it in our hearts, same as the young fans. The rest of you can stay bitter about this brand new version of your loved franchise that apparently doesn't check your boxes that you've shoved the characters into.

Oh right, the people whining that the design and animation is horrible. Can't help you there but take it up with the animators from the fandom.

I am very tired. I feel better with the Tumblr fandom because it's so open and kind, while Facebook is eternally petty and not in a fun way.

I love all versions of TMNT. The franchise helped shape who I am over thirty years. And I'm going to assume that the premier of 2012 was hated. I wasn't there, I didnt jump back into online fandom until 2016. But it seems that the heavily stylized and vastly different look of Rise was enough to shake many fans to the core.

And I think the hate is especially hypocritical if the haters love Invader Zim and Samurai Jack, which Rise resembles. I know it's painful to see how the turtles don't look the same. But... nah, I don't know what to say to that. Did you know that a hater on FB said they were the "Down's Syndrome" version? Do you understand how vile this hatred is? (Funny how my comment on the official Facebook page calling out the haters disappeared, I may have used the word Fuck).

Point is... this hatred needs to STOP.

Dear Rise fandom haters and trolls,

Congratulations, you have exhausted me. I have unfollowed Official TMNT Facebook and fan pages so I don't have to see all your Angery whiny tantrums and racist ableist yellings. Your attempts to parade that irritating "Visual History Of April O'Neil" blog are pointless because it's been debunked. She was based on a multiracial woman and now she's black, get over it. Your cries of "the Rise turtles look like [ableist slurs] are not appreciated, quit throwing disabled people under the bus because you hate a cartoon aimed at children with winks to adults. In fact, here is a thing that @kalachelone said.

"I also have developed a theory of disambiguation in fandom from this and Breaking Bad. That show had a subset of fans (the same basic demographic as Rise haters) who saw Walter White as a hero of the story. He's not. He's not even an anti-hero. He's a straight up villain and Vince Gilligan has said so. But his show didn't disambiguate itself on that matter until the last 2 or 3 episodes. (Which was sorta cool because all the problem fans hated it.)

But we can imagine that most shows that strongly appeal to boys will gather some of these fans who completely miss the point of the show in order to have their fantasy of masculinity and white supremacy. I'm glad Rise has disambiguated itself for them so that they find it unappealing. It's a sign that Rise is a good show."

Therefore, I finally finally stopped caring and will just advocate for Rise and be happy for the fandom and love Rise until Ant and Andy decide it is done.
