Save youself, I'll hold them back by My Chemical Romance
I highly recommend listening to the song while reading the comic btw!!
BEHOLD MY MAGNUM OPUS! Bro this took more than 2 months, in part because I was really busy IRL during one of those months, but even then this was a pretty large project for me compared to what I've done before. BUT NOW I'M FINALLY DONE! 😭 Save yourself, I'll hold them back is just such a Leo-coded song, especially if you include the whole bad timeline, I just had to make something rottmnt-related with it. I actually envisioned this at first as an animation, but I lack both the skill and motivation to animate so it became a lyric comic instead lol.

Introducing: Integration!
A rise of the TMNT fic taking place after the events of the movie. It's about the 4 boys learning to heal from their traumas and navigate a rapidly changing world.
Tumblr media
Rough sketch takes place 44 days post Krang invasion. A long awaited turtle pile after months spent recovering. (Many details like scars are missing because I had to go study lol)
It's mostly slice of life with some larger story beats in between. It's currently 30 000 words and growing as I flesh out more arcs and get more ideas. I will start posting this on AO3 when I am DONE. In the meantime though I want to start dropping details about it. This will likely take MONTHS to finish especially as I get less free time.
I am wanting to post some art (mostly rough sketches because I don't have enough time to really clean up art). I am also maybe going to post snippets of the draft.
Anyways! Here's the first snippet. It goes along with the sketch above.
"... Mikey liked to tangle his legs around Raph’s spikes until he was in what looked to be an uncomfortable position, but he insisted it was the best way to sleep in a turtle pile. Leo liked to sleep upright with a pillow cushioning his head from the spikes he would lean his head against. Donnie would curl around Raph’s tail, and Raph would curl it around Donnie in return. Some nights it would take Donnie a while to get everything just right, but tonight was not one of those nights.
Raph let out a steady low churr that was inaudible to human ears, but would calm his brother's instincts. He felt Leo adjust so one of his tympanums was resting on Raph’s carapace. This encouraged Raph to make the rumble stronger, and he was rewarded by his younger brothers relaxing.
Raph woke up to find the sun shining in his face. It wasn't the pleasant experience he had heard of, but once he shaded his eyes it was pleasant, warm. He decided to bask instead of getting up that morning."

how did you feel about Draxum's redemption arc?
Aside from Draxum's redemption arc being very rushed (due to the condensed nature of season two), the other problems with it are what it did to Michelangelo's character and the series's intent to stress the importance of healthy familial bonds for the turtles. Mikey rehabilitating Draxum and working to integrate him into his family on the basis of Draxum essentially being their creator was an awful decision on the part of the writers and showrunners.
Draxum repeatedly and routinely hurt Mikey, his family, and was a major threat to humans like his friend and basically adopted sister April. After all the pain and turmoil Draxum caused Mikey's family while trying to either recruit or punish the turtles for rejecting his plot to destroy humanity, the series espouses the idea that because he turned the turtles into mutants and united them with Splinter that that's reason enough for Draxum to be ushered into their family. It's such an outdated and toxic idea of family, the thinking that no matter how abusive or cruel someone is, if they made you, then they deserve to be or should be a part of your family. And for a show like RotTMNT where the creators and writers have boasted about how positive their depiction of family is, it's really jarring to witness this noxious notion of family not only go unchallenged but be portrayed as the favorable and final outcome.
While Mikey was already a bit meddlesome but well-meaning with his self-imposed role as family therapist, having him be a mouthpiece for the series's messed up ideas about what makes a good, functional family really makes him incredibly unlikeable and very insensitive to the well-being of the very family he supposedly adores and wants to protect. Then, there's the adultification of Mikey and the burden Mikey, a 13 year old child, bears in rehabilitating a grown (300+ year old) man.
So, all the talk about this TMNT adaptation having the turtles have healthier familial bonds just isn't true in light of this and other mostly unchallenged aspects of familial dysfunction in the show like Raph’s parentification and Splinter’s long-term neglect of his children.
Needless to say, there's definitely a lot that can be said about Draxum's botched redemption arc and how it ties into other shortcomings in RotTMNT.

I want to say that I like that your fic is mostly Raph centric because those fics are rare and he deserves more love and pain lol
Raph: Mom says it's my turn with the trauma
Thank you so much! I'm seriously so grateful for people who are willing to give a Raph-centric fic a shot!
I knew writing Raph-centric fic that's also a Mutant Mayhem fic was gonna turn a lot of people off from giving it a try, which I totally understand because I usually go for Leo-centric fics myself lol. It also doesn't help that Mutant Mayhem still isn't super popular.
But Mutant Mayhem Raph is an exciting new version of Raph that's been SO fun to explore, and I'm gonna go on a little rant about why I'm enjoying writing (and torturing) him so much!
[Initiating Raph Rant] So, almost all Raphs are tough guys who also wear their hearts on their sleeves, which is what makes him such a fun character. He's "the angry one", but usually also super emotional in other ways:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because MM feels more like an actual teenager than most other iterations, his moments of emotional vulnerability feel particularly raw and relatable. I might be old as dirt now, but I do still remember what it was like to be a teenager still trying to figure out who they were and what they wanted in life.
Tumblr media
Mutant Mayhem does such an amazing job of hitting on those teenage insecurities and desires. The turtles whole goal in the movie is to be accepted. All teenagers feel like outsiders and want acceptance at some point. That teenage desire for acceptance is amplified for the turtles because they're not just teenagers, but mutants as well. The moment where Raph's voice sort of wavers as he says "we're never gonna be normal" breaks my heart every time, because they're so sure acceptance is completely out of reach for them 😭
Tumblr media
...but the MM boys do get acceptance by the human world by the end of the film. Raph even seems to find his place own at Eastman on the wrestling team in the post-credit scene.
I think this is what has turned a lot of fans off MM, though, because the turtles' need for secrecy and using their ninja skills to remain hidden has always been an integral part of the TMNT franchise. Personally, I actually love that departure from the typical TMNT format and talked about it once before.
But there are some traditional TMNT elements that I did miss in MM, one of those being the fact that in most iterations, Raph is an outsider even amongst outsiders. His anger is what alienates him from his brothers at times, and it often gets him into trouble. It’s also what almost always leads to his friendship with Casey (another outsider).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tales of the TMNT isn't out yet, and we don't how this series will give Raph that traditional outsider treatment, or if it will at all. They could save it for Mutant Mayhem 2, but that's still years away. And even then they might decide not to go that route because so far, MM Raph's rage has mostly just manifested in a propensity for fighting & violence rather than interpersonal issues with his brothers & other people. His rage is even framed as useful in the final fight against Superfly.
Tumblr media
So anyway...as canon stands right now pre-tottmnt/MM 2, Raph is an "insider". He and his brothers can have a life on the surface, and Raph even seems to have found his own place at Eastman on the wrestling team. Again, I'm all for this happy ending and a brand new experience for the turtles, but I was also missing my personal favorite flavor of Raph...which is angry and alienated lol.
After I saw MM in theaters, I started looking at a lot of the concept art and other production material floating around on the internet and I came across this concept art by Garrett Lee:
Tumblr media
And it was like "oh shit, there he is! Outsider Raph!"
He looks so lonely and separate from everyone else here, and I was obsessed with this idea of Raph somehow still being an outsider even after the mutants were accepted by humans. But again, we're still waiting for tottmnt and MM 2, and even then there's no guarantee we'll get an Angry & Sad Outsider Raph out of either of those.
So I asked myself "how can I ruin MM Raph's life so that he's as lonely and miserable as he looks in this concept art???"
...and Reciprocity was born 😅

"Teenage Mystic Yokai Turtles"
Mystic Summons Au : Casey and April summon 4 mystic turtles, using ancient clan scrolls, to help save the world (the boys are just a tad unhinged and rather enjoy the modern world than do any work)
Thousands of years old(technically)
Earth threatened by Triceratons
Michelangelo:
- 'Youngest'
-is the strongest, mystic power wise
-often floats around
-major prankster
Donatello:
- 'second youngest'
- absolutely fascinated by technology, there wasn't any the last time they were summoned
-able to connect and control programs/tech such as spaceships, simply by touching and extending his mystic
-holds grudges
Leonardo:
- 'second oldest'
- likes planning pranks with Mikey
- loses arm to Triceratons?
- flamboyant
Raphael:
- 'oldest'
- big ol teddy bear
- loves cute fluffy things
All four are technically the same age, slight time difference in hatching
All four love love love basking
The magic summon scroll:
Ancient, can only be destroyed by incredibly powerful mystic magic. Cannot be destroyed by the mystic sealed in it. Several scrolls scattered around the world each with different mystics. Mystics are sealed by either being forced, tricked, or agreeing to a contract of sorts. Don't necessarily have to obey the one who summoned them, big loopholes to take advantage of there. Scrolls are impervious to the elements; fire, water, sunlight, time etc. Those who seal them don't have to be stronger than the mystic being sealed, although it helps.
Mystics do not age while inactive-sealed-not summoned. Time in between Summons is like a blink, or short nap. Time is paused and so is their consciousness. Mystics can be any species, not just yokai.
About the boys sealing circumstances:
Were tricked into it. Not really mad about it,(probably) since the dude who sealed them is long since dead. Have been sealed since medieval times. Only summoned 10 times, last was over 3000 years ago (have to check my math) these numbers and times are subject to change because I can't make up my mind or bother with math
All four are on 1 scroll, cannot be summoned individually. All or nothing.
The Triceratons:
Lived on earth back in the dinosaur age as normal dinosaurs, mutated by krang deal. Big guys, like 12 tmnt big.
Returned, but decided to get rid of the 'lesser lifeforms' aka humans before settling in.
Or
Fugitiod situation. Except he actually is a criminal. And a cyborg(?) But overall a nice guy.
The krang: ? Who Dat? No krang here?
Casey jones Hammato: Hamato clan descendent. 19 yrs. Fluffy black hair, striking blue eyes. Summons the boys in hopes they will protect the earth.
April (O Neilus or Hammato idk):
Sister or best friend? 18yrs. Red hair. Summons boys with Casey. Part of the Violet Wyverns (band or gang or club idk yet)
Violet Wyverns (name pending): band or gang or club of some real cool peeps. Members include Mondo(leopard gecko yokai boy, 16 yrs) Milo ( Asian persuasion girl, 17yrs) plus more I haven't decided yet
Hidden City: pretty much the same as rottmnt, lotsa them all over the earth.
Other planets outside of earth: who knows? Will I ever integrate any in this au?
Other sentient species besides humans: Yokai, mutants, Triceratons, ??? Mythical beings? Idk yet?
Basic plotline/storyline: guys get summoned, some stuff happens, get kidnapped by Triceratons, interagated/tortured for info cause "hey they look like they know something, let's grab them" - them being clueless for once. Escape involves setting the leader ship into self destruct. Repels the dinos. Casey don't know how to seal them back, not that he really wants to, so hey, let's explore modern earth. Chaos ensues. Mystic Mayhem anyone?

What are your thoughts on Mutant Mayhem/Tales?
i think now with enough time behind them both, i wouldn't say it's my favourite iteration of the ninja turtles..
that being said! i don't think it's bad! i enjoyed both the movie and the show and think they were both really well made! both seem to have a lot of love and care poured into them and i think that's always a good sign when the creators obviously are just as big fans as the viewers :)
but ultimately there's a lot missing from this verse that makes it hard for me to love it. for the most part i will say that the voice acting choice was/is excellent! getting real teens to voice the boys is so refreshing and fun - those four have a really fun chemistry and it shines through, especially in the movie (i have opinions on mikey's va but i always feel like im being too mean and nitpicky so i'll shelve that thought for now lol)
the show was a lot of fun when i watched it when it first came out but i haven't really found an urge to rewatch it again after that. same with mutant mayhem. i think this is just because to me it lacks a lot that to me, makes up the ninja turtles. yes the chemistry between the four of them is there, but there doesn't feel to be a great deal of individuality, and they kind of all blur into one another. i've always said that tmnt as a whole can sometimes suffer for having four main characters -- usually meaning more than one character often gets sidelined in favour of someone else having their moment (cough, cough donnie and mikey) but here, i guess they kind of decided to do a 180 on that but, it just missed the mark a little for me. they got along great together! but i missed my b-team moments. mikey teasing raph. donnie geeking out with leo. it felt a little empty without those moments to stand out that they're each other's best friends.
and with the show, they kind of repeated themselves a lot. singular centric episodes to highlights each turtles strengths and insecurities!! awesome!! first half of the season done? great, what's next-- oh. second half of the season is.. that.. again.. huh. okay. feels like we just did this but sure. guess they REALLY wanted them to have their character arcs checked off real quick. they could have done something different in that second half but chose to kind of just give us what we already just watched. it wasn't awful but a missed opportunity.
the whole thing as well as it kinda not being part of canon was.. an odd choice. i would have been alright with them just coming out and saying it wasn't canon, but having it in the show with the whole 'leo wrote this for a comic book' kind of ending was confusing to me. not sure what the angle was there, but not sure i loved it in full. even more so when they did it twice to us lol
and the jackie chan thing in tales. i aint gonna lie, chat. that kinda pissed me off a little bit. if they couldn't get jackie chan back for splinter for a mini series, fine. understandable. either take him out of the show entirely or just get a stand in, it would have been fine. but to have him speak rat and THEN have raphael's va dub over him AS raph? im just so confused as to what the point of that was. i guess if maybe the show had already been written with splinter in it and at the last minute he had to pull out, then maaybbbee?? it could be excused?? but again. just get a stand in at this point. listening to raph's bad japanese accent during some moments (especially during the parts where splinter was having more emotional moments) was kind of off putting, and i think i would have rather listened to him speak in rat talk lmao -- that's my only big angry grievance with the show where i will say i hated it lmao
i think as well the thing is, with the mutant mayhem/tales verse, we don't get any filler. filler, my bread and butter!! we see them fighting, and fighting, and kicking ass, and doing tasks and missions and fighting... filler is so integral imo when it's done right, to fleshing out characters a little more. remember them stealing from he bodega in the movie?! more of that, please !! boys being boys !! we know that mikey likes theatre but just through him constantly telling us about it! where's my filler eps that have him sneaking into broadway and causing havoc by someone thinking he's part of the set design!!
i will also say i am not a super big fan of the turtles being exposed to the outside world.... i adore plot lines where they yearn for a normal life, i think that's always interesting in any way (looking at bayverse quietly) but i was shocked at the end of mutant mayhem when they straight up were like. welp! turtles are off to school now! just normal kids!! don't know how i really feel about that since the intimacy of them having just each other and depending on one another is such a big draw as to why i love tmnt in the first place. found family and all that just tugs at my heartstrings and them just being part of the real world feels like that's kind of snuffed out a little bit. but i suppose we'll see how they deal with that in the sequel, since school wasn't at all included in the show. (again, i would have even preferred that over the repeated storyline we got)
with mutant mayhem and tales it felt like it was just about to scratch that itch and then pulled away at the last second. it was so close to being genuinely very near perfect, but for whatever reason fell short on a lot of points that unfortunately for me didn't make it re-watchable in any way, not with urgency at least.
i'll watch the sequel for sure! and whether they make a season two that feels a bit more fleshed out and weighty then i can get behind that. the verse overall, like i said, seems to have a lot of care put into it for sure. there's a lot i really do love about it that made it fun to watch the first time around, but i think that for whatever reason they're holding back on certain aspects, they need to just trust themselves and trust us to enjoy it and go the nine yards instead of hesitating.
i think that's why, from my perspective, it kind of just, faded into the shadows (pun intended) whilst a show like rise that was cancelled still gets a lot of hype and noise. heck, 2003 and 2012 have been done and finished for 15+ years and still probably get more engagement than a tmnt 'verse that's still very much fresh and active. it's telling, and maybe that's just a result of me not following the right people but it does feel like overall it's missing something big to make it better. and i just hope that going forward they find it and don't balk out on giving it their all next time.
i like the game, though. not sure if it's canon to the main storyline but i have fun playing it when i can be bothered lol
i will say this 'verse will gain instant million points to me if they add woody. i will take back every bad point i made about this if he shows up in the sequel. i'll delete my blog buy a hat and then eat it. if they wanna do something crazy like putting them in school then they can add niche idw character woody dirkins and make me happy lmao

051: Fight n Rage
Tumblr media
If Maiden Cops was a cheeky pin up poster, Fight n Rage is pure fetish art. The detail and attention it lavishes on every aspect of its play and presentation is downright pornographic. There’s a lascivious eye for the arcade image, obvious before the game even starts. The opening blasts you with eye searing CRT and phosphor effects, and the opening loading screen mimics the startup sequence of Capcom’s CPS arcade games.
Fight n Rage is obsessed with the feelings of the arcade, and to that effect it opts not for a strict recreation of the era’s pixel art, but an exaggerated one, emphasized with high resolution scaling effects that squash and stretch the art to add impact, and layered transparencies and parallax to create thick atmosphere. Character design follows suit, with thinly clad women sporting figures so bouncy and buxom they could make members of Team Ninja blush. Men are perfect inverse pyramids, rippling with so many muscles some of them are literal animals.
Tumblr media
Mechanics and aesthetics pull from a wide range of inspirations, combining the mutant mayhem of TMNT, Streets of Rage’s urban chaos, and Alien Vs. Predators’ massive enemy swarms. The 90’s edgelord worldview is on full display, presenting a world where mutated animals have upheaved the current order, corralling humans into warehouses to be slaughtered and enslaved, led by a fascistic leader named The Boss, and his crew of lieutenants. Blood and bodies litter the landscape, and enemies explode into clouds of blood and bones when finished off.
Not only does it look the part, but it plays the part, too, creating a hybrid of all its inspirations that plays at a blazing speed. There’s a full training mode--complete with ranked combo trials--and it definitely has the technical depth to justify it. Each character drastically changes how you approach the game, even if they fall into the usual archetypes of (say it with me) fast, strong and all rounder.
Tumblr media
Your basic moveset is fluid, with dashes, dash jumps, sidesteps, grapples and a variety of chain combos and specials that double as movement tools. Attacks have tons of cancel routes, giving a huge variety of methods to build combos, allowing you to improvise to fit the situation. Chain combos can end in forward or backward throws, be canceled into dashes, jumps or specials, each option providing utility for crowd control or extending damage.
In a system inspired by Streets of Rage 3, Specials change depending on direction and character state, and are powered by a rapidly filling special meter---or your health if you’re desperate and can’t wait. By removing the strict health cost, it turns what are usually panic moves into integral parts of your moveset, allowing conservative players a free combo breaker, and daring reckless players to trade their health to go for even bigger damage.
Tumblr media
The freedom of options is counterweighted by the sheer difficulty of the game. Enemies arrive in swarms, and a bad move can be punished by smaller enemies locking you down, or strong enemies pulling off full combos or command grabs. Fight n Rage demands good genre fundamentals, asking you to constantly pay attention to spacing and enemy patterns among the chaos.
You can use your aggression and the generous continue system to progress through the game through attrition, but staying calm and playing defensive loops back around into rewarding you with big damage thanks to the addition of grab techs and Street Fighter III style parries. Tapping jump when grabbed will allow you to break out of a grab and repel the enemy, and pressing forward right before an attack hits causes a short freeze and instantly refills your special bar, allowing you an invincible reversal that will totally deny their momentum.
By the end of the game it was almost as if I was playing a fighting game. I’d look for patterns, and intentionally bait out attacks to go for a parry or grab tech, allowing me to blow through their armor and start a big punish combo, or eating one myself for my arrogance.
Tumblr media
Admittedly, my initial playthroughs were made harder by my choice of character, Gal. She’s positioned as the main protagonist by the key art, and represents the extremes of Fight n Rage, with an endless well of tech to explore, but the lowest health and harshest punishments for failure. Runs are extremely volatile with only two or three bad moves able to get you killed. It makes learning the basics of the game more difficult, but with more experience she can be at almost any area of the screen in mere moments, transitioning between the ground and air at any time.
Tumblr media
F. Norris, the ninja with a very familiar looking face, is the crowd control specialist of the game. He has three variations of his Hurricane Kick that can reposition him quickly, draw in groups of enemies, or get him out of trouble. His slide and divekick allow him to weave in and out of crowds, where his flying suplex gives him an escape option or big AOE damage. He doesn’t have the easy multi-hit confirms of Gal, but there’s plenty of tech that requires decent execution to pull off, and his burst damage on pulling off a grab tech or parry is fantastic.
Tumblr media
Ricardo, the minotaur man, is the simplest of the three and the game’s dedicated grappler. He has a slow walk speed and short dash, with a more limited moveset that relies on using his grab to reposition the crowd, and his lariat to escape pressure and extend combos. Even he’s got some powerful burst movement though, with the momentum of his dash able to be canceled into a jump to launch him across the screen. From there he can pound in the enemies’ heads, bouncing up to follow with a dropkick and lariat, or landing to start his vortex of grabs.
Ricardo’s plight also reveals Fight n Rage’s surprisingly earnest take on its edgelord aesthetics. Human slavery, meat factories and brutal betrayal lend the game shock factor, but the game plays it all straight. Ricardo’s fight to end the violent regime of other mutants is given genuine gravitas during his story, and through other character stories we even find out he’s been organizing alongside human survivors. It’s simple, but it doesn’t play at any irony, and kind of reveals Ricardo to be the real protagonist of the game.
Ricardo’s story makes up the main throughline, but there’s a total of 56 variations routes for the story, with small changes to the dialogue and eight possible endings, depending on which character you play, if you’re solo, teamed up with another character, or have all three characters together.
Tumblr media
A full run can be completed in less than thirty minutes, but you’ll likely spend hours reaching that point, since even on normal Fight n Rage is going to require clean pl;ay to see the end. You’re provided with three lives, and you can force your way through but the process is going to be tedious unless you learn its mechanics. Thankfully the game has a host of modes to learn all its tricks, and even an unlockable turbo mode to make future playthroughs even faster.
Fight n Rage is a gamer that initially set my standard for the genre when I originally played it, with many modern brawlers falling flat in comparison, unable to compete in presentation or player expression. Returning to it years later and I can feel my appreciation for it grow stronger, as my skills have improved and it’s revealed more nuances I didn’t appreciate the first time around. Even with the recent surge of entries into the genre, Fight n Rage still represents a definitive entry in the genre for me, one that’s unlikely to be dethroned any time soon.

Hi, I know your run on the mainline TMNT comics is nearing its end and I just wanted to thank you for everything you've done for it! It's definitely a highlight of the IDW turtle universe for me, just getting to see the gang in a setting where they can walk around the city and interact with people in a much less secluded way. It's felt very slice-of-life and calming, and I can't get enough of it to be honest. I'm curious though, what was it like integrating Jenny as a main character amidst all this? It must have been fun to develop a brand new fifth turtle that hadn't been seen before in any other universe, and she fits in seamlessly imo! That's all really, I've only become a TMNT fan after binging a bunch of turtle media when Mutant Mayhem came out, but IDW TMNT is definitely my favorite and I just wanted to send my gratitude!
Thank you! That means a lot! I'm so happy to hear you've been into what I'm doing. :D
Integrating Jenny was a challenge but a fun one. I had to figure out how she functions in the team, how she interacts with the other turtles, what her "thing" is, that sort of stuff, I wanted her presence to feel as seamless as possible while being fresh at the same time. I don't know if I've been entirely successful, I always wish I did something differently but hindsight's 20/20, but overall I'm happy with how things have gone.
Thank you again!!!

Went to mom's a few weekends back and uncovered this gem in the family photo album. What you're seeing here is me and my kid brother posing for a picture in the most extra way imaginable.
My mom had a polaroid instant camera all through our childhood but she rarely used it outside of family functions or special occasions. So when she just popped in on me (the dinosaur) and my brother (shirtless Batman), asking us for a picture, we made it an event. We wasn't just going to pose and smile, oh no, we had to get in costume and tell a brief story.
More interesting than the silly costumes and pose is my childhood bedroom in all it's early 90s glory! Let me give you all a tour of how I was living.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Sesame Street baby lamp! - Like every preschooler, I loved Sesame Street. By this point I was a little too old for "the streets" according to my peers so I had to give up my fandom. While I moved on, I still kept the lamp as my night light for a brief time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My Super Nintendo! - Man, was this thing special to me. I saved up my money for an entire year and bought this beast at the local K-Mart that summer. My family and I spent hours playing the pack-in games (Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars) and spent many more playing the likes of Donkey Kong Country, Joust, Galaga and Super Mario Kart. I don't talk about the SNES like I should, but it was an integral part of my childhood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mini Mutants Playset! - This is the reason my mom wanted to take this picture. Me and my brother spent most of our childhood in sibling bloodsport but when something brought us together and made us play nicely, it was a big deal for my parents. TMNT Mini Mutants was apart of the "mini toyline" fad in the the 90s. Inspired by the success of Polly Pocket and Mighty Max, lots of properties made mini figures and awesome, detailed playsets for them to hang out in. I recall having a Spiderman one, a WCW one, but TMNT's was amazing. I got these for my 8th birthday and got HOURS of play out of them. They came equipped with little traps and missile-firing mechanisms and stickers and designs that rivaled the regular-sized playsets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Pepper! - Me and my brother had a problem and her name was caffeine. We drank SO MUCH pop as kids its a wonder we didn't have issues with kidney stones or our teeth melting out of our skulls. My parents got to a point where they had to start hiding pop from us. So seeing an empty can of Dr. Pepper laying in the floor gets a big smile from me. I'm happy to report that outside of Stevia-sweetened pop, I'm a sparkling water guy these days. Cane sugar pop is a rare delicacy, but thanks to corn syrup, soda is basically poison now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black & White TV! - Couldn't find the exact model for comparison, but it's sort of similar. No cable, no color, not even antenna channels. This bad boy is how we played games most of the time - in glorious black and white with radioactive glow beaming into our faces. Next time I get frustrated about my framerate, input lag or picture quality issues, I'm going to remember where I came from.
Hope you enjoyed this little slice of the 90s. This time in particular was probably one of the happiest and most memorable of my childhood. The cliche is "I wish I could go back" but I enjoy my life now, but I wouldn't mind dropping in and just looking at everything before returning home :)

So over the past while I’ve had a number of different TMNT AU ideas of my own (they just won't stop.) Due to the fact that I’m not sure which one I want to work on first I have decided to post some summaries of them here in the hopes that someone would respond and give me something to talk about. IDK man :/ Also, these are all based in Rise! unless explicitly stated.Anyways, here have a list:
Teenage mutant turtle fish: Inspired by @quewp1’s Mertles AU (I am still working on redesigning my ideas for it.) In short, the earth got completely flooded after some weird event about 50 years ago. The yokai decided to be nice and helped many of the humans out before they could be washed away. Hidden yokai cities all around the world took in hundreds of humans, providing them with the safety of the magically protected underground caverns. The yokai and humans then work together to integrate the humans into the yokai world as well as figure out a way to either expand the cities or to reclaim the flooded surface. Jump forward a number of years and we find a yokai scientist, employed by the Progressions council, named Barry Draxum and his husband, a young actor named Hamato Yoshi AKA: Lou Jutisu. Barry and Yoshi want kids but they're not about to go about it the easy way. Barry’s job for the Progressions council (a group of humans and yokai tasked with figuring out how this new society is going to progress in a way that will let every being thrive in their very rapidly shrunk world) is to think up, and test out possible ideas to reclaiming the flooded topside. An idea that he had been meaning to test out was to mutate humanoides to give them fish features that would allow them to survive underwater. So yeah, instead of just going out and adopting some kids, Barry and Yoshi decide to create their own in a test tube. In order of age there’s Jennika, a yellow bellied slider and armored catfish, Raph, a snapper and nurse shark, Leo and Donnie, a red eared slider and betta fish, and a softshell and betta fish respectively, Mikey, a box turtle and mandarin fish, lastly Venus, a smooth softshell and flying fish.
Lost to the void: Your classic Mikey ends up being unable to save Leo from the prison dimension but with a twist. While he had been able to open the portal it closes just as Leo reaches it, or at least it seems that way for his brothers. Instead, when Leo reaches the portal it zaps him into a black void and he passes out for a bit. He wakes up to a pair of glowing eyes that blink at him and the sound of a voice saying something about him not belonging there. Everything goes fuzzy and then he wakes up in pain and an alleyway in a version of the 2003 dimension. He meets Lord Simultaneous who tells him about the multiverse and agrees to help him get home. When they try though, it doesn't work. Lord Sims (because I cannot be bothered) informs Leo that getting him home will take a bit more doing than he thought. There's not much that Leo can do about it and he starts to get really bored after about a month of waiting around in Lord Sims main palace. Lord Sims offers him some odd jobs around the multiverse, which Leo is happy to comply with. The way I have things set in my head is that alternate dimensions are the different Tmnt cannons, ie: Rise!, 2003, 2012, etc. And parallel universes are offshoots of that, ie: a fanfiction of Rise! that changes the cannon. Lord Sims can travel between these realities and now so can LV!Leo. (This is the one that I’m the most excited about right now. I wanted to get a design for LV!Leo before posting anything about it but whatever.)
Hundred year war: My own version of the turtles. (BTW: this idea came from a dream so please bear with me if it sounds a bit weird.) Yokai were never driven underground and ended up being the dominant species of earth alongside humans. At some point, for unrelated reasons, the world devolved into a world war that has lasted for nearly a hundred years. Before it began someone gave a prophecy that one of the sides would create their own destruction. During the war one side tests out a bio-mystic bomb on a small town across the border of the other side. The military of that side decides to quarantine the town due to the fact that it and the people have been giving off weird radiation. They also force the soldiers that first responded to the blast to stay there as well. First Lieutenant Hamato Yoshi finds four baby turtle eggs in one of the houses destroyed by the blast, their mother dead. He decides to raise (really co-parent) them along with a goat yokai scientist named Barry Draxum sent to study the effects of the blast before the quarantine was decided. So basically everyone that was there within two days of the blast going off were now stuck there for the foreseeable future. Over time the village and its inhabitants are forgotten about. The turtles grow up running around the compound that was set up for research and the village itself. At some point some of the young children that had been near the blast start exhibiting weird powers, which Draxum decides to study more thoroughly. I actually started writing a scene for this so let me know if you want to see that finished at some point.
Dryad donnie: At one am several weeks ago I whispered to myself ‘Treeatello’ and thought that it would be a really funny idea. By the next morning I had no idea what I had ment, but then about a week after that I had an actual idea. Partially inspired by @tangledinink’s Swannatello au in the sense that Donnie gets magically influenced to protect something and gets kinda magical-girled in the process. The turtles fight and kill a dryad that they had thought was just another mutant. The kill part was an accident on Donnie’s part. The grove the dryad had been protecting is now in sore need of a new protector so it calls Donnie, forcing him to go to the glade and becoming its new dryad protector. He gets to be a willow maiden.
Separated AU: All the cool creators have one so here's mine. Lou doesn't get mutated but he’s only able to grab Raph and Mikey. Before he leaves the hidden city he's also able to snag a pair of cloaking broaches. Once back in New York he gets in contact with his old manager who helps him get set up in a large apartment. He teaches Mikey and Raph to never take off the broaches when out of the house and sends them off to school once they're old enough. Meanwhile, Draxum has Donnie, Leo, a blown up lab, and an angry Big Mama to contend with. Big M makes a deal with him that if he gives her Leo and Donnie that she’ll forgive his poor business practices. Draxum doesn't like the idea that he has to give up the things that he spent his entire life working for. The two of them decide that they can share them, Big M gets them to raise for publicity and later her Battle Nexus pits, Draxum gets to see them once a month for testing and samples. Eventually Donnie starts begging Big M to give him a cloaking broach and let him go to human school, eventually after a lot of pestering she gives in and gets cloaking broaches for both him and Leo. At this point Raph and Mikey are both in highschool and have made quite a name for themselves in all the different extracurriculars they participate in. Out of nowhere these two kids show up and start beating them at everything.
I lack motivation right now, please ask me things so that I can talk about these.
