My Theory on the Fears in TMAGP

For the last few months I’ve been trying to organize the fears in the Magnus Protocol. I went in with the assumption that they’d be organized by the same system that the fears in TMA were, but this very quickly turned out to not be the case, as I could pick out at least 2 or 3 alignments for each statement.

This made me think that maybe the fears in this universe were jumbled, and that they would eventually fall into 14 categories of their own. I started trying to write down any associations I could find. I was calling one sector Mutilation for a bit; body horror, the fear of being mutilated, very flesh-stranger-corruption aligned. “Making Adjustments,” “Putting Down Roots,” and of course, Mr. Bonzo are all things I marked down as being aligned with Mutilation.

I was relistening to the podcast recently when it occurred to me that the Magnus Institute itself is centered around a separate thing—so, then, might the fears also be separated in an entirely different way than the 14?

Alchemy, I found out, has three “primes”: body, spirit, and soul. Body, which holds the subconscious, your physical being; spirit, which hold your conscious, your perception of the world; and soul, your superconscious, associated with a sort of “higher self”.

Three primes of alchemy, three sections, one of which aligns incredibly well with that I’ve been calling Mutilation.

So we have our basis for the fears this series. I’ve had Mutilation fleshed out (pun intended) for a while now, and a friend of mine noticed another pattern, something associating the vast, the lonely, and the buried; they called it the Deep. The Deep aligns incredibly well with spirit.

My official hypothesis: The fears in the Magnus Protocol universe will be organized by the three primes of alchemy.

Body: gore, flesh that is not the way it should be, the fear that you will be mutilated.

Spirit: Horror surrounding the conscious experience. I haven’t delved into this one yet, but I think the concept of vast-buried-lonely fits well.

Soul: Again, not well thought-out, but I wanted to get my thoughts out here. My only certainty is that the soul will have something to do with the web, and will have something to do with Lena.

Mandiant Finds UNC5820 FortiManager For Data Exfiltration

Mandiant and Fortinet worked together in October 2024 to look into the widespread abuse of FortiManager appliances across more than fifty potentially compromised FortiManager devices in a range of businesses. A threat actor can use an unauthorized, threat actor-controlled FortiManager device to run arbitrary code or commands against susceptible FortiManager devices with the vulnerability, CVE-2024-47575 / FG-IR-24-423.

As early as June 27, 2024, Mandiant saw a new threat cluster that is currently monitor as UNC5820 taking advantage of the FortiManager vulnerability. The configuration information of the FortiGate devices controlled by the compromised FortiManager was staged and exfiltrated by UNC5820. Along with the users and their FortiOS256-hashed passwords, this data includes comprehensive configuration details for the controlled equipment. UNC5820 might utilize this information to target the enterprise environment, advance laterally to the controlled Fortinet devices, and further attack the FortiManager.

The precise requests that the threat actor made in order to take advantage of the FortiManager vulnerability were not yet documented in the data sources that Mandiant examined. Furthermore, as of this point in Google cloud study, there is no proof that UNC5820 used the configuration data it had acquired to migrate laterally and endanger the environment even more. It therefore don’t have enough information at the time of publication to evaluate actor location or motivation. Mandiant will update this blog’s attribution assessment as new information emerges from investigations.

A forensic investigation should be carried out right away by any organizations whose FortiManager may be exposed to the internet.

Exploitation Details

The first known instance of Mandiant being exploited was on June 27, 2024. Several FortiManager devices were connected to the default port TCP/541 on that day via the IP address 45[.]32[.]41[.]202. Around the same time, the file system stored the staging of different Fortinet configuration files in an archive called /tmp/.tm that was compressed using Gzip. Mandiant noticed a second attempt at exploitation using the same symptoms on September 23, 2024. Outgoing network traffic happened soon after the archive was created in both exploitation scenarios. The size of the archive is marginally less than the number of bytes delivered to the corresponding destination IP addresses. The specifics of this action are listed in below Table .

The threat actor’s device was linked to the targeted FortiManager during the second exploitation attempt. Figure shows the timestamp at which the illegal FortiManager was introduced to the Global Objects database.

The threat actor’s unknown Fortinet device showed up in the FortiManager console after they had successfully exploited the FortiManager.

The files /fds/data/subs.dat and /fds/data/subs.dat.tmp contain additional indicators of the exploitation that include an associated disposable email address and a company name as listed in Figure .SerialNumber=FMG-VMTM23017412|AccountID= 0qsc137p@justdefinition.com|Company=Purity Supreme|UserID=1756868

Lack of Follow-On Malicious Activity

Mandiant examined rootfs.gz, the device’s initramfs (RAM disk) that is mounted to /bin. During the period of exploitation activity, did not discover any malicious files that had been produced or altered.

Affected clients who displayed comparable activities in their environments were alerted by Google Cloud. In order to help identify Fortinet device exploit attempts, Google Cloud Threat Intelligence also conducted retrohunts while creating detections for this activity and manually escalated Pre-Release Detection Rule notifications to impacted SecOps customers.

Apart from working with Mandiant, Fortinet made aggressive efforts to notify its clients in advance of their advise so that they may improve their security posture before it was widely made public.

Mitigation Strategies / Workaround

Restrict only authorized internal IP addresses from accessing the FortiManager admin portal.

Permitted FortiGate addresses should be the only ones allowed to connect to FortiManager.

Deny FortiManager access to unidentified FortiGate devices.

Not when they were writing TOS, but by TMP and beyond, absolutely they are making the difference and Spock's dialogue gets more depth in the context. Vulcans don't say they don't do feelings, but how many time have they admitted that they feel deeply? They contole their emotions and do not display them. They can, but they choose not too.

The only exception to all this is Strange New World's Spock, where they completely bungle the reasons why Vulcans do not emote easily by implying that Vulcans don't emote because of their nature rather than their culture, and we see this in the (bad but funny) episode where he gets humanized as an excuse for Peck to flail about for 41 minutes.

When Spock says things like “Vulcans have no emotions”, I think of the time I asked my language instructor for the difference between two words in the target language, because she had corrected me on using one in place of the other. I knew them to translate to “feeling” and “emotion” (I mean. The “emotion” word was literally a loan word). And I think we use those words very interchangeably in my dialect of English. She said that the word translating to “emotions” meant the expression of a feeling, whereas the word for “feelings” referred to the internal state of a person.

I think maybe at one point in English, and in maybe in other dialects of English than my own, there was/is this same distinction, because the verbs “to feel” and “to emote” do have different meanings to me. But I could see how an “emotion” could become indistinct from “feeling” in a culture where feelings are, for the most part, automatically emoted, like the Star Trek future world seems to be… at least, the very culturally-American window of it that we get to see.

I could also see how that would be confusing to someone learning the language, who perhaps might rely on etymology to understand nuances of a new language… such as the fact that to “emote” is literally from Latin prefix e/ex, meaning, like, outside. As in “exterior”. And I can see how someone who held this misunderstanding might continue to use the language with the definitions that most fit what they mean, even after learning that a subset of the speakers, ahem, illogically do not distinguish them. Even if a given person they interact with has no clear cut distinction between feelings and emotions in their culture, there are other cultures on earth that do distinguish them, so it’s worth maintaining that distinction for those who do. - for some reason it was really really tiring for me today? like I practiced for less than my usual time (holiday time) but I was really sore afterward

- I procrastinated on the cadenza by working on interpretation, and I’m mildly satisfied by what I did today

- I’m finally getting somewhere with the opening octaves; they’re stronger and more “midori” , which is good. Not the best yet, but it’s getting there.

- I screamed approx. six times during a three hour practice session

- my lesson on thursday cannot come soon enough because I am dying in the cadenza

- I was really tired today for some reason, so I drank two cups of milk during practice to try to survive

- I got to eat yogurt at 11pm after practice and I think my mom felt bad for me because I screamed a lot today and I’ve also lost my appetite over the past few weeks
