It goes into a lot of the history of this stuff too while also discussing how it was used in a few horror pieces in modern media (shows like Them, and Lovecraft Country, as well as movies like Tales From The Hood 2, and Bamboozled). The analysis is good, but even if someone isn't a big fan of horror the history he gives is an amazing starting spot (and even touches on minstrel shows and animation!!)

Slowly and painfully BioWare is figuring out that it simply can't do more than one project at a time anymore. It's now a single-project studio. Mark Darrah expects that both Edmonton and Austin will be working on ME5 together

ME5 effectively paused production for 15 months in order to help DA:TV ship

Right now other than some DA:TV clean up/final patches, everyone at BW is working on ME5

However ME5 isn't yet ready to suddenly have a team of 250-300 people working on it, so while some DA:TV devs moved onto it, some DA:TV devs were moved to/are moving to other parts of EA instead. The ME5 team started, but there is a long way between "start" and "ready to scale" up

The ME5 team is figuring out what ME5 is going to be & its structure, then will get ready to ramp up to a much bigger team size

"BW, for the first time really ever, is able to singularly focus on a single project, is able to put everything it has towards a single goal, which is making the best ME it possibly can."

But it remains to be seen whether BW will be able to get its people back when it needs them and is ready for them. There are a few reasons why this might prove difficult. Alternatively, on the flipside, this degree of focus might be exactly what BW needs to move it into the next phase of its life. "Maybe EA is going to prove to be incredibly effective at moving people around and when ME5 looks to start to grow maybe there will be no troubles".

We will probably have hints of what's going on [with ME5] within the next two years. "I have high hopes for ME. I think that once they figure out staffing, BW being focused on one game at a time is probably great for the studio" (though there may be growing pains to get there)

Does Mark Darrah foresee similar issues in the ME5 dev cycle to what DA:TV had? No, because ME5 hasn't had the same two big directional shifts, and it has had no leadership discontinuity (ME5 paused when they went to help DA:TV i.e. it didn't continue without a leader). But we should only really start counting ME5's dev cycle from today. "It really hasn't been that long with a significant team"

The ME5 teases in recent N7 Days were made by a "very small team"

BW has existed in different ways/structures through its history. We're currently entering into an "unprecedented time" for BW

The purchase of BW by Elevation Partners, the purchase of BW by EA, when Ray Muzyka & Greg Zeschuk left BW, and the year 2017 in general are the 4 most important events (not including shipping games) that Mark Darrah feels have affected BW the most in its history

BW's strategy over time could be seen as having had 4 different phases: grow, consume, sustain, contract. In the contract phase, though BW maybe didn't realize it yet, the number of projects it was capable of running simultaneously was decreasing slowly/gradually. Why? Projects were getting more expensive, requiring more people/resources/time, and by this point BW had essentially burned off all its 'reserves' from the growth phase i.e. there was no longer any fat left to burn off

After DA:I shipped, Mark Darrah experienced that it was very difficult to find resources if your project wasn't the next project that was due out the door

DLC is a safety valve for processes and staff; a place for devs to work when other projects aren't quite ready for them yet; a place for the next gen of leaders to be grown. These things disappear as DLC does. Mark Darrah is pretty sure that the move away from DLC is coming from EA

In the contract phase, in 2013-14 Anthem was starved out by DA & ME:A. ME:A was also somewhat starved out by DA. Then when ME:A was in the driver's seat, it consumed most of the resources

In late 2016/early 2017 during the push to ship ME:A, as part of that BW began to experience leadership discontinuity. As the DA leader, Mark Darrah led a team of DA people onto ME:A to help it ship (the Dragon Age Finaling Team) for a few months. this sort of thing had happened at BW before but this was the first time when senior leadership moved off the projects they led to do this. this caused a change in philosophy in terms of the way that projects were run

When ME:A shipped and Casey Hudson came back to lead BW, there was then a much much larger leadership discontinuity with Anthem. The Montreal studio was supposed to move over onto Joplin to help kickstart it but it ended up getting taken away and given to the leadership in Montreal. but even if this had happened as it was supposed to, BW may not have been able to be in a place where it was going to be able to ship Anthem and Joplin simultaneously

Three quarters of the senior leadership on Joplin moved to Anthem or left BW. DA continued and became Morrison. The discontinuity had massive consequences for DA4

In 2021/22, this happened again in the opposite direction. The leadership team moved onto DA to help it ship, though rather than leaving some of the team in place, everyone moved. The other project (next Mass Effect) effectively ceased to exist for 15 months in order to help DA4 ship. In 2023 for the first time since 1995 BW was only working on 1 project (DA:TV) & there was nobody working on ME5 or remasters or side projects at that time. Now that DA:TV has shipped, apart from some people on cleanup and final patches, there is no plans for DA:TV DLC and "there is only Mass Effect". "Everyone at BW will be working on Mass Effect."

DA:TV being a 'direct sequel' would have been an unlikely path

With BW now focusing on a single project, Mark Darrah does worry that EA will get "itchy"

It'll be a [long] while to DA5 [hypothetically speaking, if it gets made]

MELE involved a lot of external devs

Shadow Realms was BioWare Austin and was due to: "partially places for people, partially a desire for Austin to get something new."

Mark Darrah expects that the devs are hearing everything being said about DA:TV

BW focuses more on consoles because of sales numbers

Unreal Engine 5 (which ME5 is on) is moving onto other EA projects as well, which may help

There are reasons why DA:TV is the way it is

BW has had external consultants on leadership and structure over the years

Mark Darrah expects that the next Dragon Age will once again be pretty different to the last iteration

BW Austin were brought in to help make Anthem. "What didn't happen (that should have) is that they should have had more directional control over the live service direction."

BW has had difficulty learning from previous games because at least one title was too far along TO learn. but a single game leads to staffing issues

Mark Darrah pitched a dev structure back in 2016/17 which would have had "3 fast follow games then a period of retooling"

EA doesn't really sell IPs

Chance of DA:TV DLC? "That's an EA question. And I expect EA's answer to be no". "I don't think we will see DLC. A new DA would be in the future."

"DA has been looking for larger audiences in every iteration. EA has never understood the franchise"

Remake DA:O or ME1? "While I think it would do well, I don't expect it to happen at any time soon. Also the skillsets required don't really over lap"

red i want you to know that you and blues various vids ab santa and saint nick and the correlation between them and odin gave me bragging rights in my art class today when we had a presentation on the history of santa and christmas representations through art lol

Let me introduce you to Novum, a Youtuber who makes very long and in-depth analysis videos of films, mostly horror or "elevated horror." And it's actual analysis!

Today he released a video I've been eagerly anticipating, his analysis of The VVitch. It's over seven hours long.

No, I haven't watched it all yet, but the "boring" history of witchcraft part that he provides a timestamp for people to skip is incredible, thousands of years of the treatment and development of the idea of witchcraft in the Western world. I learned a lot and I've actually studied the topic.

Anyway, he managed to teach me a lot about one of my favorite films of all time, Alien, so I'll pretty much watch any film he talks about so I can enjoy the videos.

Also he has under 60K subscribers as of this writing, so he's smaller than the well known essayists.

Today personally for me is a SmugginSmiles Memorial but I got like other drawings to do so here’s a sketch instead

Bill Skarsgård: "I'm better than Stellan was at 34"

As a child, he accompanied his father on business trips around the world. Today, it is Bill who brings his family to international film shoots - and terrifies cinema audiences with his bloodthirsty characters.

Even when he was a small child, Bill Skarsgård had seen more of the world than most of us do in a lifetime. When father Stellan filmed, Bill, his younger siblings Valter and Eija and mother My came along to the recordings. Often they were gone for months at a time in countries such as Mexico, the United States and Cambodia.

- It was fantastic to grow up that way, says Bill. Mom homeschooled us, three hours a day. She was a fantastic teacher, so that meant that we were often a month and a half ahead of our classmates back home in Sweden.

It also meant that the three siblings had plenty of time and opportunities to get to know the countries. Bill continues:

- Cambodia is an incredibly poor country, with shootings. To see it as a child, to experience that contrast to life in Sweden... We became friends with the local children, and it was a privilege to see the world so early. It made me more humble and gave me a more complex view of the world. I am incredibly grateful to have been able to experience it.

Which of course leads to the follow-up question about how he himself does it, now that he himself has a successful career with long periods every year when he is away from home in Stockholm. Can the wife Alida and the children come along?

- They come to visit. It was easy now when we were filming in Prague, because if they felt that "now it's boring", then they could go home.

He laughs and says:

- Dad used to spend half of his salary on accommodation. The worst was when he made "The Exorcist" in Rome, then he rented a house that was visited by 70 people during the filming. I haven't gotten there yet, but I'm working on it.

Traveling with Stellan to various film shoots meant that the children sometimes had to come along to watch when dad worked in front of the camera.

- For me, that's the biggest reason why I fell in love with acting and filmmaking. I was completely mesmerized by the advanced illusions that were built. I think children understand acting better than adults do. I saw dad in a mustache and saw it for what it was. Children play thief and police, you dress up. That was a big reason why I chose this job.

Watched "Nosferatu" with dad Stellan as a child

The film that Bill shot in Prague was "Nosferatu" and it is to talk about it that we meet at the Nofo Hotel in Södermalm. Bill unfolds his 192 centimeters on a sofa, wearing a nice bright polo shirt and trousers. He is relaxed and happy, but conscious of keeping the most private things private.

"Nosferatu" is a remake of the silent film classic of the same name, which in turn was a theft of the plot of Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula". Stoker's widow sued the filmmakers and demanded that all copies be destroyed. Fortunately, some survived, and the film is today considered a horror film classic.

Even as a child, Bill saw the original film.

- It was Stellan who introduced me to it. We watched movies together and had a silent film period. We saw Chaplin , we saw "Nosferatu". I thought it was eerie and scary, but Dad also described how it had changed film history. There's something mysterious about that movie.

Bill plays the Transylvanian Count Orlok, who with the help of a broker is looking for a place to live in Germany. Orlok already has some kind of relationship with the broker's wife Ellen, played by Lily-Rose Depp . Perhaps we should mention that Orlok is a vampire and his journey towards and arrival in Germany brings pestilence and death.

Unlike other vampires, such as brother Alexander in the HBO series "True blood", this vampire does not have sharp canines, but is more of a loitering bloodsucker. And Bill looks really grotesque in the film, so one wonders what, for example, actor Lily-Rose Depp thought of playing someone so made up beyond recognition?

- We had many intimate scenes together and we talked a lot about it. She is outstanding in this role. She thought I looked really creepy and unpleasant, and she could use that. Then she knew it was me underneath. It helped.

- When the vampire sucks blood, it is a form of rape. Here we are as far from "Twilight" and "Interview with the Vampire" as it gets. We go back to the roots. We give the vampire a renaissance.

In recent years, Bill has played many roles in horror films, from the bloodthirsty clown Pennywise in the two "It" films to the television series "Castle Rock" and "Derry", all based on things written by the master of horror Stephen King .

- I don't know why there has been so much horror. I guess I attract a certain type of character and it works the other way too. I never had the ambition to be a horror actor. For me, it's always project-based – what does the script look like, who's the director? Now I'm super saturated when it comes to horror, but if a project comes along that brings something new, I'm interested.

The entire Skarsgårds family lives close to each other

As you know, Bill belongs to a large family. He has seven siblings, some of whom have children. He has a mother My, father Stellan and Stellan's current wife Megan . The jobs around the world mean that it is not always so easy to meet.

- But right now everyone has a base in Sweden, for the first time in a long time. As soon as everyone is home, we will hear from you and then we will see you at our local place in Söder. All live in Söder, ten minutes apart.

And then you see each other at dad Stellan's house, who is a good cook. Bill laughs when I ask if he himself is good at cooking.

- I am better than Stellan was at 34. Food is one of his biggest interests and I have grown up with it and learned. Although there was a lot of stuff like casseroles and Coq au vin, stuff that kids don't really like. And then I have married into the Per Morberg family, and he is also good at cooking.

In addition to constantly appearing on the big screen and in the TV box, the Skarsgård siblings stand out because they are tall, just like their father. They are visible. But Bill doesn't feel like they're being watched.

- There is nowhere where I feel safer than in Söder. I grew up here, I know half of the people who live here. They are probably tired of seeing me. And Swedes are not that pushy. It's probably when someone gets drunk.

"Quite Swedish of me in my clothing style"

Like many of his fellow actors, Bill appears from time to time as a model in fashion ads, including for H&M, while older brother Alexander recently worked with Calvin Klein. He says, with a laugh, that it's not about any fashion passion but that the companies pay well.

- It's fun with clothes, but in private I'm probably quite Swedish in my clothing style. I don't peacock much, but it can be fun to do it for a premiere, together with a stylist or a designer. But my usual clothing style is quite tame. Alex is even worse. There, only Converse, jeans and a t-shirt apply.

When we meet, there are a few weeks left until Christmas and Christmas celebrations with the big family. After the New Year, work awaits with the director Gus Van Sant and his new film "The prince of fashion", where Will Ferrell plays a man who takes his son to fashion week in Paris.

And jobs in Sweden? Yes, maybe.

Today's fact is about CHOCOLATE 🍫🍫🍫🫕🫕

Scientific name: Theobroma cacao

This is basically a yummy history lesson😋

Did you know chocolate was first consumed in the form of a strong, bitter drink with frothing foam?

They believed cacao to be a gift from a god, known to the Aztecs as Quetzalcoatl (I just know this one, there's another too) and used to use the beans as a form of currency 🤑 and drink chocolate at royal feasts etc.😋 (PS according to folklore, Quetzalcoatl was banished for the realm of gods(ig that's wut ya call it) for sharing this precious commodity with humans. The things we do for chocolate.)

After a while when colonizing countries was obviously the latest trendy thing you could do, a Spanish conquistador (Hernán Cortés) was (probably) the first European to come across chocolate 🍫 . YAYYYYAYY!!!

At first, the bitter taste of the beans made it suitable to be an ailment.

So if you're binge eating chocolate tell your parents "I'm being healthy" 10/10 guarenteed to annoy them. hehe🫠

Feel happy? Going to gorge on chocolate? Gonna recreate the drink? Good job 👍👏

“Hey, Fennec? Can you give us a hand over here?”

Grogu heard his dad call out to his companion. He smiled because he knew what was coming. 

“What? You can’t handle a little Mandalorian armor? Are you sure you didn’t just take your armor from some Mando who tripped in front of you and hit their head?”

Grogu knew that Fennec liked teasing his dad. Most days Grogu would have scolded her about it, but not today. They were supposed to go fishing and that whole trip had been sideswiped by a pile of Mandalorian armor. That told everyone what was important to Din Djarin. He was glad that Fennec called him out on that nonsense.

She and Grogu walked over to the others. That Fennec kept pace with Grogu, rather than rushing ahead of him also made him smile. She was trying to teach Din Djarin a lesson and Grogu wondered if his dad was capable of learning it. Maybe. Maybe not. 

“I asked you to come over here because I knew you’d spent some time in the Mid-Rim. Have you ever heard of a bounty hunter named Bartlebee? Whoever they are, they had their name inscribed on a piece of this armor.”

“Bartlebee? Hmmm. Doesn’t ring a bell. There was a hunter named Bartnlee. He didn’t last long. Got on the wrong side of the Moog syndicate and ended up in a compactor on Takodana. Maz didn’t like that at all. Can’t blame her really. It made a heck of a mess. Let me see the writing.”

Grogu followed Fennec over to the pile of armor and hopped onto his dad’s shoulder so he could get a better view. Hmmm. The inscription looked strange to him. 

“This says, ‘Barter Fee’, not Bartlebee. I’m guessing whoever this last belonged to had to trade it for something. Given what you Mandos are like, I doubt they were Mandalorian, since your lot would rather die than let anyone else take their armor. Probably a scavenger. Why does it matter? Won’t your armorer just melt it down and start over?”

Grogu shrugged. He didn’t know what would happen to it. The Armorer sometimes melted the beskar down, but other times, she just made adjustments to it. He’d coo’d to his dad.

“What about the other names? It’s possible that some of these folks are on Mandalore or part of another Mandalorian covert. What do you think, Fett?”

Grogu turned to look at the Daimyo, who had been standing there very quietly, while Fennec and his dad had discussed the matter. In fact, Grogu couldn’t remember the Daimyo saying anything since they had entered the room after all the clatter.

“I know who once owned this armor. What I don’t know is why anyone would give it to you as gift. This once belonged to Pre Vizsla. He caused a lot of trouble for Mandalore and Mandalorians throughout the galaxy. I had thought this armor had been melted down long ago. I recommend that fate for it now. No Mandalorian should end up wearing the armor of a man who betrayed everyone he knew.”

Uff. No wonder the Daimyo had been so quiet up to that point. He must have remembered the stories his father had told him as well as what he had learned while that whole mess had played out.

“Sounds like it should be melted down for the benefit of Mandalorian foundlings. No need to keep that lineage alive. Are there anymore Vizslas?”

His dad appeared to be asking everyone in the room that question. 

Grogu shrugged. The Daimyo shrugged. The Major Domo, who had returned with the mech and the droid that brought the stuff to them, shrugged.

Fennec did not shrug. 

“Hey, droid. Who is your master?”

Huh… Grogu hadn’t thought of asking that question. 

“You are not authorized to access that information, human meat bag.”

The Daimyo turned to Din Djarin to ask a question.

“Is that an old HK unit? I haven’t seen them in… never. I’ve only seen them in history vids.”

Grogu looked at the droid with renewed curiosity. HK units would have been incredibly old. Did droids really last that long.

“I don’t know. I know that mech is far more modern. Maybe it knows.”

Grogu took that as his cue to chirp and coo at the mech, who rolled right over to him. The little mech began to chirp and beep back at Grogu. Apparently the droid’s name was ‘thirty’, which was a strange name, and it worked for someone called Muun Bajir and Muun had a friend named Vizsla. 

Grogu explained what he learned using sign language because they were all pretty fluent, except for the Major Domo who was still just learning his numbers and colors. 

“Does your friend ‘Thirty’ know where that Vizsla is? Maybe the armor should be returned to them?”

It was Grogu’s turn to shrug and then re-address Thirty and ask the question. The answer was interesting and Grogu instantly wondered if his dad was going to really follow up on it.

He relayed the information. 

“Mandalore? What do you think, Grogu? We’ll bring this to them and then go fishing there?”

Yippee! 

Grogu nodded his head and began to laugh. Fishing on Mandalore! That was going to be a lot more exciting than fishing on Tatooine, no matter how big and scary the fish there were. That was actually a good part of the fun and excitement. Just imagine… he might actually catch a mythosaur!

my treat to myself today- watching this little smoothly animated nicely voice acted low stakes kid's movie about friends and rainbows and fairies and matching heart-shaped lockets

im putting the following images out of order bc it's funny

the movement? lovely. so much moving. constant wiggles. some really cool or adorably composed shots

designs? simple and strong. no one is getting mixed up

characters? they are here and i love them all so very much, even the ones we only see for a few seconds. you will feel bad for random damaged snowman no.??? when the goblins are horrified at their demise and their comrade snowman walks over to solemnly start rebuilding them. There's also a fairy of puns and a fairy of info dumping. Not literally, but that's what they do.

And our main duo cares so much about each other i want to scream.

Rachel (yellow hair poof) is more down to earth and firm and worried about the consequences of things, while Kristy (smooth dark hair) has lots of ideas but sometimes gets lost in the idea / fairy sauce and forgets stuff like magic is faster than building a shelter by hand or bullies are hard to ignore while they're bullying you. They both care about fairies sure but more than that they care about being best buddies. Love that for them.

dialogue? Good! Sometimes VERY fun~ Rachel: "Oh I KNOW I should just ignore her, but Lydia is such a-" Kristy: "Carrot!" Rachel: "..I had another word in mind?"

voice acting? yessssssss Yeesssssssssss

music? the background music never fails to put that last exta oomph into a scene and the two soundtrack songs are bops. The villain song.... is very energetic. And also seems like it's being sung in-universe? The rhyming is basically not there and the words are either silly or hilariously dark. I think any small kid who heard it would probably quote from it regularly. I'm worried I might end up doing it too. Yum yum crunch yum crunch yum.

lesson of the day: when you see a nearly hour long vid about a random fairy themed book series you've never heard of before, watch that vid, and maybe they're be a fun little movie waiting for you at the end of the rainbow themed history lesson
