Today I was interviewed by Newsweek regarding the new CDC autism prevalence rates in the United States and comments made by HHS Secretary RFK Jr. What RFK Jr. has said today is absolutely despicable, regurgitating rhetoric from 20 years ago that strips away the humanity of all autistic people, and that so many of us have fought back against. We have always been here, and we always will be.
The full video of my interview can be watched at top of the page at the link below!
#off topic#personal post#autism#autism spectrum#world autism month#autism acceptance month#vaccines do not cause autism#which shouldn't even have to be said at this point#and yet#the turnaround time on this was insane btw#interviewed and went up in a matter of hours#i was also contacted by another media outlet#they couldn't fit me into the piece but they're keeping my contact info#craziness#truly a whirlwind of a day#interview

I think the funny thing about South Park having it’s reputation as this conservative show is that so much of it would probably give my VERY conservative mom a heart attack
#for reference my mom is one of those bigoted far right extremist trump worshippers#aka exactly the type of people this show makes fun of#and anytime any of those topics come up she has a meltdown on how the woke left is trying to ruin our country and the government is putting#chips in the vaccines and turning us into lizards idfk atp#she’s insane#like I was gonna have her watch the post Covid specials because she does like/is familiar with a bit of the show but then I was like#better not 😭😭😭#most people avoid showing their parents this show because it’s offensive#then there’s me avoiding showing my mom bc it’s too woke 😔😔😔😔

I don't want to cut off my trump supporter relatives. I want to ask each of them "what is the worst thing the biden admin did to you personally?" & when they say something like "made me wear a mask :(" I would say "cool. my passport is frozen and friends of mine have fled the country." & then I want them to immediately explode.
#alas this is a conversation that can only exist in my head#because more likely theyd say something completely made up & off topic like 'gave babies vaccines made of mercury and cigarette ash'#& then the conversation would be about how thats not true rather than how THEY FROZE MY FUCKING PASSPORT#THEY WANT TO PREVENT TRANS PEOPLE FROM MOVING FREELY OR LEAVING#FUCKING GOD

it's crazy there r people out there who are just now finding out you have to be fully vaccinated in order to get an organ transplant
#also not to be ''that one friend who is way too into law and order'' but there have been multiple episodes abt this kinda shit#or at least the topic of ''I will let my child die for my religious beliefs before I let them see a doctor'' bc they did have episodes#covering that. in the 90s. like u guys really are just learning this? and by you guys I mean republicans who are trying to make#the whole jd vance relative denied organ over covid 19 vaccine status some weird discrimination shit that's what I'm talking abt here#or maybe I'm the weird one for being like how did u not know this because I do say that about some genuinely unknown things

i got covid the moment the new hxh chapter dropped and i have zero energy for anything, let alone going into fandom. fuck my life. i turned on my comp for the first time in what 3 days... idk, i need to send one thing and then i will likely turn it off again. i will have to look through the tag when my focus and reading comprehension will be better than that of a dead worm.
#i want to thank all the nice rightwingers who helped keep this fun disease around and popular#all you fuckers who chose not to vaccinate#who choose not to wear masks in public transport and travel while sick#you're really fighting the system sticking it to the man#it's so much fun not to be able to regulate my body temperature and have shivers for hours#or be barely able to do something else than lie in bed for max of like 2h a day and not in one go#riveting fucking stuff#off topic#whining

Saw my retired pneumologist of an uncle yesterday and he said "is your bronchitis better?" and I said "yes I've almost entirely stopped coughing" and he said "ah good I was worried it was the whooping cough"
???????????
#apparently the vaccines only cover you until you're like 20 and if you want to stay immunized you should do another round as an adult?#and apparently there's been an epidemic in neighbouring countries???#and apparently it's called the 100 day cough because you cough for a hundred fucking days????#new fear unlocked#off topic

Reading the article about the HIV research breakthrough. Reading the comment from the Oxford HIV guy at the end ungraciously saying “it’s not that big”.
Oh boy the things I could say about Oxford’s HIV research. RIP my husband who got half an hour of chat he’s heard before.
#look the thing you have to remember about sexy big research topics#is that while there are many good people who are there to make a better place#there are also people there for other reasons#or who started in the first group and moved to other reasons#or who are there for many reasons#and what I’m getting at is that an HIV vaccine or cure likely comes with a big prize awarded in Stockholm#there are some people who would sell their grandmas for it#they would certainly engage in obstruction of research projects to a point that involves unethical behaviour towards study participants#collaboration is a fucking dream#also malaria vaccine research I am looking so hard at you too#that was a fun nest of vipers I had my hand in for a hot second

my mom's got a thyroid disorder so she's immunodeficiant and most vaccines lay her out for an extreme period of time. but what she takes from this is 'they're not helpful' because she's. well like a lot of people her age of her religious demographic she's spent the last ten years getting stupider . so when i mentioned i was getting my flu and covid shots tomorrow she was like oh ok so i can expect you to be sick for a week. no that's YOU. and i'm doing this so neither of us get sick ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure good mother
#we're like. the kind of people whose Issues specifically clash with each other#she wasnt so nervous about vaccines when i was a kid but ever since my cousin got an autism dx. well . she and my aunts got all#like. conspiracytheory about it. not to such an extreme degree that they think nobody should do it just that they feel the need to like#make skeptical anxious comments if anybody brings the topic up#if i seem to be posting a lot about my parents. im staying with them for three weeks while family is in town#and there are i expect going to be a lot of these convos

It’s that time of year where you get to hear family members be incredibly misinformed about things you’re super autistic about and you have to keep yourself from angry infodumping because you don’t actually want to spend your time fighting over this while eating but it’s so hard and you are being so so good about it, but they really have no fucking idea how that works and you don’t even know where you would begin countering whatever they’ve been told
#emma posts#I when you have an autistic kid with an anxiety disorder who loves science and cares a lot about the world around them#you get someone with knowledge on so many politicized topics#i rea thought we would react better as a society when I was learning about zoonotic diseases as a teen#and thinking about the next pandemic that would occur#but we didn’t and the topic makes me feral#among many other things that get brought up#fighting for my life to stop myself from snapping when people say shit about everything from vaccines to animal behavior

Just ranting in tags
#something that grinds my gears about liberals and “leftist” who i dont think are actually leftist is this#push back about mask in public health conversations#ive had more people on the political blue spectrum shut down ANY conversations about mask and say some bs about#this isnt the time for this topic its it own conversation#then lets have the fucking conversation#so many of y'all parade around being like “least im not a dumb conservative and i beleive in public health”#but then still spread illnesses by not wearing a mask#and still make it almost impossible for people with compromised immune systems to exist in society#y'all love a GOTCHA moment at republicans#and believe me#i do too at times#but then when the conversation of wearing a mask to also protect people on top of vaccines and washing hands etc#y'all cover your ears and say NO THAT DOESN'T MATTER RN#its fucking hypocritical#also since this is my internet space i do just block people and i love it

When I was in vet school I went to this one lecture that I will never forget. Various clubs would have different guest lecturers come in to talk about relevant topics and since I was in the Wildlife Disease Association club I naturally attended all the wildlife and conservation discussions. Well on this particular occasion, the speakers started off telling us they had been working on a project involving the conservation of lemurs in Madagascar. Lemurs exist only in Madagascar, and they are in real trouble; they’re considered the most endangered group of mammals on Earth. This team of veterinarians was initially assembled to address threats to lemur health and work on conservation solutions to try and save as many lemur species from extinction as possible. As they explored the most present dangers to lemurs they found that although habitat loss was the primary problem for these vulnerable animals, predation by humans was a significant cause of losses as well. The vets realized it was crucial for the hunting of lemurs by native people to stop, but of course this is not so simple a problem.
The local Malagasy people are dealing with extreme poverty and food insecurity, with nearly half of children under five years old suffering from chronic malnutrition. The local people have always subsisted on hunting wildlife for food, and as Madagascar’s wildlife population declines, the people who rely on so-called bushmeat to survive are struggling more and more. People are literally starving.
Our conservation team thought about this a lot. They had initially intended to focus efforts on education but came to understand that this is not an issue arising from a lack of knowledge. For these people it is a question of survival. It doesn’t matter how many times a foreigner tells you not to eat an animal you’ve hunted your entire life, if your child is starving you are going to do everything in your power to keep your family alive.
So the vets changed course. Rather than focus efforts on simply teaching people about lemurs, they decided to try and use veterinary medicine to reduce the underlying issue of food insecurity. They supposed that if a reliable protein source could be introduced for the people who needed it, the dependence on meat from wildlife would greatly decrease. So they got to work establishing new flocks of chickens in the most at-risk communities, and also initiated an aggressive vaccination program for Newcastle disease (an infectious illness of poultry that is of particular concern in this area). They worked with over 600 households to ensure appropriate husbandry and vaccination for every flock, and soon found these communities were being transformed by the introduction of a steady protein source. Families with a healthy flock of chickens were far less likely to hunt wild animals like lemurs, and fewer kids went hungry. Thats what we call a win-win situation.
This chicken vaccine program became just one small part of an amazing conservation outreach initiative in Madagascar that puts local people at the center of everything they do. Helping these vulnerable communities of people helps similarly vulnerable wildlife, always. If we go into a country guns-blazing with that fire for conservation in our hearts and a plan to save native animals, we simply cannot ignore the humans who live around them. Doing so is counterintuitive to creating an effective plan because whether we recognize it or not, humans and animals are inextricably linked in many ways. A true conservation success story is one that doesn’t leave needy humans in its wake, and that is why I think this particular story has stuck with me for so long.

It is fuckin insane the sheer disregard everyone has for covid and how utterly bizarre it feels to be actively losing credibility in people's eyes just because I take it seriously. Everyone thinks I'm being "silly" but I literally was in the middle of getting a degree in microbiology when this shit started, I was literally taking immunology and virology courses when the pandemic hit, it's not like I have a poor understanding of the topic. I've been watching the death rate and keeping up with the new variants and vaccines and symptoms and I can bring up all the sources I want but it feels useless, nobody wants to hear it, nobody gives a shit.
