The Dainty Yet Hardy: Trailing Flowering Maples
Abutilon megapoticum is part of the Malvaceae family, which also includes plants such as hibiscus, marshmallow plant, and okra. This plant is native to southern Brazil and commonly goes by Chinese lantern or Brazilian bellflower. It grows as a shrub or vining shrub and has small blooms that dangle like little bells. The blooms are composed of a red calyx, yellow petals, and a brown pistil. When grown outside, this plant is a hummingbird magnet and attracts many hummingbirds in its native habitat due to its sweet nectar. It is very adaptable and able to withstand heat, humidity, drought, cold, and shade, which makes it the perfect perennial for Southern gardeners. Even though it is tolerant of shade, it won't produce as many blooms when compared to a plant grown in full sun. Also, this tropical plant is surprisingly hardy down to zone 7b.

4 au 10 janvier 2021
It was a very cold week. The ground has been frozen in the mornings. The landscapers have started building a short retaining wall around the Mediterranean garden around the pool. I spent most of the week removing pine needles, olives and leaves from under the plants. I also did a bit of weeding. I lightly pruned a few Brugmansia and will see how they perform.
Tumblr media
I weeded around many of the citrus trees. Michel says he thinks the cold will harm the roots, so I didn’t continue. I really hope nothing happens to those trees.
Tumblr media
It’s been so cold that I have put off some pruning of Cestrum nocturnum that will have to wait until after the overnight temperatures stop dipping below freezing. I also want to cut down the grasses soon.
I took more cuttings of the Lavendula. There are also some roses that will need to be propagated this year too.
Tuesday Denis stopped by and I gave him a quick show around the garden. Florian was also here. However, he was in a rush so we didn’t have any time for a catch-up. It was great to see him again. He was in my course at London College of Garden Design in 2012/2013.
Thursday my DSL router arrived and that evening Lucien helped me get my WiFi and television all up and running. It’s so nice to have the Internet here.
Saturday night I decided to swap bedrooms, including curtains. I pushed the other bed against the wall to get my desk to fit in the new study. The printer is up and running on WiFi. It’s definitely starting to feel more like home.
Sunday I went to a surprise party for a friend of a friend in Antibes. There were seven of us for the afternoon of good food, dancing and a little fun. Of course we all departed in time to make it home before the 18.00 curfew.

Trailing Abutilon or Chinese Lantern has been flowering continuously for the last year and a half at least (Abutilon megapotamicum or Callianthe megapotamica) native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay a shrub that can grow to 2.5 metres tall. Mine does spread a fair bit but usually is less than two feet high. I pretty much haven’t watered it for the last year and it’s still green and colourful. Propagates really easily from cuttings or layering. #flower #argentina #brazil #uruguay #abcmygarden #longflowering #repeatflowering #perennial #bush #shadelover #easygrow #potplant #red #yellow #layering #cuttings (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp65xYxvi5d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Protecting Garden Pots During Winter
Bring Delicate Plants Inside
Bring plants that need an ice free least winter temperature into a somewhat warmed nursery or studio, or cool room in your home, before awful climate sets in. Water periodically.
Wrap Up Fragile Pots
Many pots, particularly fancy compartments that aren't intended to remain outside in solidifying temperatures, require winter insurance. Wrap them up in burlap (potentially twofold layers), and secure firmly at the best and base with solid garden string.
Keep Delicate Plants Warm
Wrap pruned plants that need security in low temperatures in layers of plant wool before solidifying climate strikes. Move the pot to a shielded spot, for example, a shed, far from excoriating winds. Expel the downy when the climate moves forward.
Line Earth Pots
Embed bubble wrap inside earth pots in spring to limit dampness vanishing, and to help keep the roots cozy in winter when the temperatures jump—the roots are only a small amount of an inch far from the frosty icy, not at all like those where it counts in the dirt.
Plants to Secure
As a general guide, colorful plants from warm atmospheres require winter insurance. Some may survive the chilly in any case, since they originate from ranges with dry winters, they will pass on in sopping wet soil. In free-depleting soil and a protected position, however, they may survive. Others should be wrapped up and brought inside, however the level of assurance shifts.
Plants requiring winter security:

Aeonium
aloe
Beaucarnea recurvata
begonia
bougainvillea
brugmansia (picture 1)
desert flora
citrus
echeveria
fuchsia "Thalia"
