Identity

(working title)

“Hey, do you remember that time my dad came home early and caught us with our shirts off?” 

“Yeah,” he said, with the very slight upward inclination of the lips, that counted as a beaming smile for him. “He was furious. He made us sit and read scriptures about the sin of lust, till my mom came to pick me up.”

That was how they did this dance. She’d ask ‘do you remember’ and he’d smile and say yes. Offer a few details back, that proved he did, indeed, remember. Because it was easier than telling her that he remembered those things like a story someone told him, not like actual events that happened to him. That half the time he didn’t actually remember, at all. That he couldn’t even remember his mother’s face.

Tifa laughed, her pretty sparkling laugh, that felt like the warmth of a hearth on his skin. “I bet he’d have been even madder if he’d known what we were actually doing.” 

“Probably,” Cloud’s faint smile faded. 

From what his memory indexes said, Brian’s attitude toward Tifa’s identity had been…backward, to grossly understate it. It had escalated to using slurs, once, when she got her job as the town guide, and started wearing the cowgirl outfit, but never past that. Brian was backward and ignorant, but not really violent. Which was lucky for him. His teenaged daughter probably could’ve kicked his ass, even back then.

“It…must be complicated, thinking about him, now,” he ventured.

She nodded. “That’s a good way to put it. I like to think one day we would’ve patched things up, but…I guess we’ll never know. He never got a chance to be sorry, and I never got a chance to forgive him. Not like your mom, who was totally supportive from the beginning.”

“I think it’s harder for fathers to let go of their sons, than it is for mothers to let go of their daughters.”

“That’s charitable of you to say, but we both know your mom was the only one in that town who even tried to understand, let alone help. She was the one I’d run and cry to, after me and my dad had a fight. She even sewed us matching outfits, so it’d be less obvious when we traded clothes.”

“She was…really wonderful, wasn’t she?” 

It was more of a literal question than a rhetorical one, which made his stomach ache with something hollow and cold, that wasn’t exactly grief. How could he grieve for people he didn’t know? He was just…empty.

“She really was,” Tifa said wistfully. A beat or two passed in silence, then she seemed to come back to herself. “Hey, don’t you have work tonight? You better get going. You’ve got a reputation to build, Mr. Merc!”

“Ah—you’re right. I’ll see you later, ok?”

“I’ll be here,” she said, smiling and waving cheerfully as he hurried out of the bar.

He cleared out the nest of monsters in a half hour, then had nothing to do but poke around the scrapyard. Maybe he’d strike gold and find enough of an old bike to do something with.

He was peering curiously into the deep shadows, behind a suspiciously new and well-oiled iron gate, when heard the intentional scrape of a boot behind him. He froze, hand readied to grab his weapon. 

“Cloud.”

The intruder addressed him by name, so it must be someone from the town. But something about that smooth, serpentine voice made him shiver, like there had been a sudden blast of cold air on the back of his neck. 

He wheeled slowly around, to see an extremely tall and hyperbolically fit man, with a long, black, leather trench coat, that he wore open, with a harness strapped across his bare chest. He was standing backlit by a security light, which made his waist-length silver hair look like it was actually glowing.

Cloud’s eyes dropped to his thigh-high boots and black leather breeches, then back up to the man’s eerily beautiful face. His golden brows lowered fiercely.

“Who the hell are you?”

For reference the main character I was talking about was Cloud Strife, though I also did a transfem analysis of Tidus, Sora, Riku, and Xion (and kind of by extension Roxas and Namine). Sora is just literally trans and plural.

I even tried to throw him a bone by saying Zidane Tribal has t-boy swag.

open question to the transfems of tumblr: have you ever been asked to not talk about your body/transition, not use your name/pronouns, or otherwise been policed in how you talk about your transition in trans spaces (on or offline) because it “makes transmascs dysphoric?” if so, please share your experiences on this post!

A ship I have with said character:

canon: NO ONE. cloud is asexual. the shippy horseshit the devs try to stuff him into with the harem of waifus for the loser gamebroz to jerk it to all falls flat and comes off forced and fake for a reason. that reason is that cloud is very very very clearly asexual. that said, i do think he has a fun, mutual, insanely toxic attraction to sephiroth

serious: sephiroth. OTP. their dynamic is planet-obliteratingly hot and they are clearly in love, in the worst, most toxic-ass obsessive freaky-shit have stabbed each other so many times way and i say that as a compliment. relationship goals. also vincent valentine. there are so many reasons for this, but the easiest one to explain is that their personalities and array of mental illnesses match one another's so well. also cloud can hang with vincent physically which is awesome. also i like to pair cloud in a FWB no-romance way with transfem tifa. they have a really cool dynamic

canon: tifa, aerith, yuffie, jessie. the whole harem. they're all godawful ship options for a variety of extremely obvious and less obvious reasons which i have yapped about in a lot of posts so i won't go over it again here.

serious: human slide-whistle yuffie and canon sexual predator jessie. otherwise i dunno man, i can make a lot of shit make sense, with some actual effort and storytelling. unlike the devs who seem to think boy+girl=chemistry. hell i shipped cloud with weiss the immaculate in canon-verse and made it make sense MY POWER IS LIMITLESS YOU FOOLS

A random headcanon:

canon: cloud doesn't know what he looks like anymore. he just sees a weird blur in mirrors, and thus avoids them. he doesn't tell anyone because he doesn't tell anyone anything. you can show him a picture of himself and he will be able to see and describe the person you say is him, but he won't relate to the image as himself, nor will he retain it in his memory

serious: he's not terse, impatient, and a loner because he's broken. he was already like that before the trauma. he's perfect the way he is and does not owe his selfish shitty allistic friends any more exhausting masking than they already demand of him

crack: sephiroth beat the lifestream and cloud beat sephiroth therefore cloud is stronger than the lifestream which makes him the final arbiter of life and death in gaia. welcome to my shinigami cloud strife AU you're welcome

General opinion of said character:

cloud is so personal and deeply important to me that i actually talk about him a lot LESS than my other favorite characters, because exposing my thoughts and feelings about him feels like exposing myself, and i don't like to do that. i love him the way one loves a limb or a vital organ. if that sounds weird and dramatic, you will be pleased to recall that you are on tumblr dot com, the dramatic weirdo mothership. what were you expecting something normal?
