the playoffs have been fuckin sick

so the first round is almost over, just one more rockets/warriors game tomorrow, and i've REALLY enjoyed this first round. i think it won't register for most fans as like one of the best first rounds ever cuz it wasn't like every series went to 6 or 7 games or anything, so if you only look at the results it's like ok. a couple of game 7s, one game 6 in a series where one of the teams was up 3-1, and then a bunch of 4-1s and 4-0s. that doesn't like immediately jump off the page as this super exciting super suspenseful crop of series, but two things:

first, the final result of each series doesn't necessarily convey just how close so many of the games were. like tossing out the 1/8 matchup on each side cuz they were both sweeps (even though okc/memphis had a couple really close games), you have the clippers and nuggets trading wins every other game, but all the other series had one team up 3-1 at some point. a 3-1 lead in a first-to-4 seems like a huge advantage, and obv it is, but not all 3-1 leads are created equal. as an example, the pacers going up 3-1 on the bucks with games 1 and 4 being blowout victories is VERY VERY DIFFERENT to the knicks going up 3-1 on the pistons with games 3 and 4 each being decided by literally one shot

and second, i don't think the quality of an nba game or series or whatever is SOLELY decided by how close the scores were anyway. i think a lot of fans tend to over-index on the end of close games, which on one hand is understandable, but on the other hand there's a whole 3 extra quarters taking place with lots and lots of good stuff to watch and interesting stuff to glean. the strategies teams are employing, the measures they take to try and slow down the best players, how they go about trying to hide their weaknesses, how they decide which players get playing time and which don't based on the specific team they're matched up with, etc etc. it's good shit!! i'm having a great time!!

obv i haven't been able to watch every game of every series cuz 8 series all going on at once means there's been like a shitzillion games every day lol. but i'm gonna try and really lock in for the second round cuz this shit's gonna be REALLY good. like, celtics/knicks might be kinda rough for me, cuz i assume boston's gonna win without TOO much trouble and i fucking hate boston too much to really be able to sit there and appreciate how good of a team they are, but every other series looks to be good as FUCK. cavs/heat was the one series in the first round that was genuinely not close at all, like the cavs literally broke the record for the largest total point differential across 4 consecutive playoff games or some shit lol. needless to say i didn't go out of my way to watch that series, so now with them playing against the pacers in the second round i finally get to take a proper look at them. nuggets/thunder will be sick, i'm super excited to see how that crazy okc defense goes about tryna slow down jokic. then timberwolves vs either the warriors or the rockets should be super sick as well. i can't wait lol
