you mentioned in the chat of a jello stream that you disliked how much fantasy magic crystals were shaped like Quartz. are there any specific crystal shapes you think are underutilized in fantasy?
I always like it when i see a nice beryl-or-andalusite-esque columnar crystal, or something botryoidal or acicular in a way that it makes little pom-pom shapes. And dogtooth (scalenohedral) crystals are a nice way to have that classic spiky shape without going quartz about it. But there's a whole entire world of weird and unique crystal shapes out there to base your fantasy crystals on, and I can't show off every possible shape that a crystal can come in with just one post. Pretty much every shape that a crystal can be is underutilized in comparison to the quartz shape.
the big thing that gets me about the "oops, all giant quartz clusters" method of designing fantasy crystals for your fictional world is that the shape a quartz crystal comes in, even though it's seen as like, the ubiquitous crystal shape that we think of all crystals as being, is actually very specific to quartzes!!!!

This is a figure from the mindat.org page on quartz. the top three shapes (a, b, and c) should be very familiar images to you! These are the most common shapes that crystals will be in fictional media. They're also three idealized crystal habits of QTZ - normal (prismatic), trigonal (prismatic), and pseudo-hexagonal (prismatic).
That's a lot of long words, but it all boils down to the describing geometry of a quartz crystal, and the geometry of its atomic structure.
QTZ is made of polymerized silicate, which, again, sounds fancy, but a polymer is just a long chain of many smaller molecules, and silicate is just the common term for the molecule SiO4. Silicate is a tetrahedron shaped molecule, meaning it's a pyramid with a square shaped base. A QTZ unit cell is made of a chain (a polymer) of silicate molecules linked together.
Here, we use unit cell to mean the simplest repeating building block in a larger pattern. like, say, if you build a giant lego cube out of all identical cube shaped legos, each cube shaped lego represents a unit cell of that giant cube. But QTZ unit cells aren't cube shaped. They're rhombohedrons- ie, 3d shapes where each face is a rhombus.
and if you stack a lot of rhombuses next to each other, they form a hexagon.
So when all the little unit cells of QTZ fit together, their ultimate shape is going to be hexagonal.
Quartz are not the only hexagonal mineral. Calcite famously also has a rhombus shaped unit cell. In mineralogy terms, this is called having trigonal symmetry- tri for three, as in the three rhombuses it takes to make a hexagon, or the three planes of symmetry a rhombus has.
But calcite doesn't form in in those tall prisms that terminate in pointy pyramid shapes made up of isosceles triangles or pentagons. It sometimes forms in dogtooth crystals, but dogtooth crystal faces are scalene, and they don't have that long prism body with a pyramid at the top like an endcap- they're spikes all the way to the base. Why is that? Why is quartz different from other trigonal minerals? why are its crystals weird like that?
Well, theres a lot of reasons, but one major one is that on top of being made of rhombohedrons, Quartz is ALSO made of helixes!

Thats right. Quartz has TWO fundamental patterns happening in its lattice. At the same time!
You can see by the overlayed yellow rhombohedrons in the figure above that each rhombus-y building block of QTZ fits together into a helix-shaped chain. QTZ forms in helixes because each of the basic silicate (SiO4) molecules in QTZ is sharing two of its oxygens with the other silicates its connected to. Because each block of the helix chain is made of a rhombus, when you stack those helix chains all next to each other to get a big quartz lattice, those chains make a hexagonal net. But helixes are also chiral, meaning they have a handedness to them- they can mirror each other and still be non-superimposable, like human hands.

To get the scope on why this chirality makes a difference to the structure of quartz, lets compare it to another mineral with trigonal symmetry, the aforementioned Calcite. If you could see atoms, this is what a chunk of calcite mineral would look like to you:
nice and simple, right? That's a very normal looking rhombus. everything slots together in a very straightforwardly rhombus-y way.
Now let's look at quartz.
ough.
When you combine these two features of QTZ geometry, the rhombus/trigonal symmetry and the helix shaped network of interlocking molecules, you get a pretty unique structure, which leads it to grow in very unique shapes when it gets bigger- hexagonal prisms with many interlocking chiral faces, terminating in those striking pyramid points composed of isosceles triangles.
That all sounds pretty cool right? it sounds like quartz is a really striking and unique and beautiful phenomenon of geometry, right? so why would I be annoyed? why would I be annoyed that a fantasy crystal has that unique shape? BECAUSE THAT SHAPE MEANS THE MINERAL IS QUARTZ.
Do you understand now? Out of all the possible permutations of different shapes a crystal can grow into, QUARTZ IS KIND OF THE ONLY FUCKING GUY THAT DOES THAT PARTICULAR SHAPE! nobody is out there doing it the way my guy quartz is doing it! So much so, in fact, THAT THIS IS THE ENTRY ON MINDAT FOR IDENTIFYING QUARTZ:
BY EYE.
QUARTZ IS ONE OF THE ONLY MINERALS YOU CAN ID BY EYE.
So, when you designed your mystical blue glowing crystal that has the power to harness a wizard's mana or whatever the fuck? And you picked that shape for it to be?
That means it's not enchantenite, or lunarite, or or whatever the fuck you want to call it. It's quartz. it's just quartz. your lack of creativity and unwillingness to do anything other than the most basic, recognizable shape for your fantasy crystal has all but guaranteed it. Maybe start worldbuilding what trace elements in that otherwise extremely fucking normal quartz you have there cause it to glow.
Because you picked the one shape that basically only quartz can be!
Congratulations!
enjoy your magical silicon dioxide, you piece of shit.
#theres like an entire doctoral thesis of nuance that im leaving out here#other minerals can be pseudomorphs of quartz#and yadda yadda yadda#but this is a tumblr rant post im writing at 1 in the morning#so. its not very accurate or nuanced or whatever#not art#ask#demifly#jelloapocalypse

Zelink Week 2025 Day 3: Forget Me Not
I couldn’t write anything for Wish, but I was able to do Day 3 @zelinkcommunity!
This was one of the harder ones to write, I had ultimately based it off of an alleged fairytale detailing the origins of the name for the forget-me-not flower. I eventually decided to make a short story about OOT Zelink.
A one-shot where Link and Zelda meet in secret, courting away from disapproving eyes, only for things to go wrong.
Big thanks @echoingvoids for beta-reading this fic!
Full fic under the cut!
Tension coiled my muscles as I stalked the carved stone passage, my breath caught between the sorrel and clover.
Rounding the corner, I pounced into the first hall of the maze-like corridor with a “Ha!”
But to my surprise, Link wasn’t hiding here.
Curiosity pierced my playful mood as I approached the mouth of the maze, peeking past the moss-covered rock walls. The entrance to the Sacred Forest Meadow was also empty.
I called out for him, my voice laced with concern. Link would never leave me alone in the Lost Woods, and I knew better than to wander off by myself, but I was still prepared to do so if anything had happened to him.
But before I could move, I heard a loud SPLASH behind me, and I turned around just in time to see Link wrapping his arms around me.
We both fell onto the plush sourgrass, mirth rising in our throats. He had chosen to hide in the small pool tucked into the valley wall at the far side of the hall. I did eventually shrug him off of me as the cold water he was soaked in began to seep into my clothes.
The sun’s warmth could shine unblocked on us in that clearing, but Link had a special place he wanted to show me before our outing was over. Arm-in-arm, he led me through the Lost Woods, until he told me to close my eyes. I didn’t need to have them open to sense his excitement; I could sense it in the way he clasped my hands.
I felt the sun’s heat on my face once more, the light brightening behind my eyelids as I was led out from under the wood’s ever-reaching canopy.
“May I open them?” I asked, not being able to hide my grin.
I felt Link’s grasp slip away from my hands as he stepped behind me.
“Now.” he whispered in my ear, his tone betraying his own smile.
Opening my eyes, I drank in the sight before me, my breath stolen away.
By now, twilight was beginning to fall upon the forest, the sun setting the clearing ablaze with gold. A small rock wall obscured the trees enclosing the glade up front, and fine threads of crystal water cascaded down into a small pond that stretched across the hollow. Duckweed and lilies encircled the still surface, the blossoms glowing in the half-light. The grass was carpeted by a myriad of small, multicolored flowers. Trees surrounded the glade, providing mottled shade, the sunlight setting emerald green leaves alight against the stark blue sky. Though there was still some daylight, fireflies danced wild and free through the air, and my vision was peppered with the blinking of blue and yellow lights.
“Oh, Link…” I breathed.
“Do you…like it?” he asked quietly, his gaze unsteady and his arms slightly crossed in a self-hug.
I pulled his hands away from his arms, taking them in mine.
“It’s beautiful.” I purred, and he gave me a coy smile as he led me further into the glade.
We settled near the water’s edge, buried in the sweet smell of wildflowers.
I gently traced the round petals of a light blue one with a bright yellow star center, the clustered blooms dotting the grass.
“These flowers are beautiful. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in Hyrule, let alone the gardens.” I said as I admired them.
Link nodded, watching my movements.
“I don’t think I’ve seen many of these flowers outside the Lost Woods. Those I have really only seen here; I asked Saria, not even the Kokiri have a name for them.”
Interest sparked inside of me, and I pulled my attention away from the flowers.
“How is Saria? I haven’t seen her since we were children.”
My sudden turn-around caused him to straighten after realizing he had begun to lean towards me, but he spoke without apprehension, returning to a more laid-back demeanor.
“She still prays at the Forest Temple. But nowadays she mostly just talks to the Deku Sprout. He is growing stronger everyday.”
He let out a sigh.
“But I haven’t seen her very recently either. Haven’t had the chance between training and patrols. And seeing you, of course.”
He flashed me a boyish grin, and I looked away bashfully, before uncertainty stirred in my belly.
“You know I sent you back in time to live your life freely; are you sure joining Hyrule’s military is the right choice? I wanted to spare you from war and fighting.”
He laid his hand reassuringly on my shoulder.
“Hyrule is at peace; I’m in no danger. Besides, I like that I get to use my skills this way, to protect our people. And I can be closer to you.”
“But then maybe we would not have to hide away like this.”
He removed his hand from my shoulder, becoming lost in thought. Finally he piped up:
“I’ll get better as a soldier! The captains say they’re impressed with what I can do. Maybe if I become one, we’ll be able to meet under more normal circumstances…”
I weighed the possibility in my mind, my thoughts interrupted when he spoke again.
“And when have you ever cared about what other people think, Sheik?” he murmured mischievously.
I gave him a playful shove at the name, and he responded with amused laughter.
“You’re the one who devised a whole plan to defeat Ganondorf when your own father didn’t listen to you.”
“And you are the one who listened. Trust me, if I cared about what he had to say about us, I would not be out here with you. But maybe Father would approve if you were someone of higher ranking…”
Link gave me an amused smile.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Our excitement died down, and we glanced at the sights around the glade, an awkward silence suddenly falling upon us. I turned his proposition over in my mind, wondering if it could be true. My father could probably approve of a friendship between us if he was a more respected soldier, as long as friends were all we could be. However, part of me couldn’t help considering the possibility of something more…and heavens knew I wanted it. The thought made my face flush, but it faded as Link spoke again.
“Do you think we’ll always be like this?” he said tentatively.
I sighed as I gazed out across the gently rippling pool.
“I want to stay like this forever. But regardless of what happens, you know our circumstances will only change as time passes.”
Link stretched himself out on the grass, letting the sun dry his clothes.
“You once told me that the only thing that doesn’t change with time…is memory.”
He slowly trailed his fingers along the stems of the delicate blossoms before turning his head to face me.
“Is that what I will be?” he breathed, the shade of his grief-stricken eyes not unlike that of the flowers in the glade’s dusky glow.
I leaned over him with a cheeky smile.
“You know what I also said about the passage of time?” I whispered.
Link sat up to reveal a fistful of the dainty blue flowers, and he gently threaded one into my hair, a sad smile on his face.
“That nothing can stop it…”
My heart fluttering, I held his hand to my face as he began to pull away, staring deep into his eyes.
“That it turns young love into…”
I trailed off as surprise rippled across his face, locking his eyes to mine.
Time seemed to slow as we stared into each other’s souls, and an unknown force began to steadily push our faces closer together, my heart fluttering in my chest all the while. Our noses almost touching, I felt my eyelids fall…
Only for them to snap back open as the sound of thunder rolled through the air.
Link and I drew apart as we searched the clear sky.
“Must be a distant storm…” he muttered, keeping his face to the heavens, though I didn’t miss the blush that was spreading over his cheeks.
“We really should be going either way…before it gets too dark. Impa can only cover me so much.” I murmured coyly under my own blush.
Link stood, offering a hand to pull me up. The flowers shook in my hair as I rose, and I gently pulled them out before they could fall.
I let my sight rest on them in my hand, before I turned my gaze back to him.
“I’ll keep these, so I’ll always remember this moment.”
Link smiled as he offered his hand, and I gave them to him so I could draw the Ocarina of Time with my free hand.
Encircling our arms together, I played a triumphant melody, and we were swept away by a golden wind.
That was our relationship, a sprightly dance on the line between lovers and friends.
The evening in the glade was one of the first of our secret outings, but it only confirmed our feelings for each other. We continued to meet under the cover of days off duty, dedicating time to prayer, and any excuse Impa could make up to cover me. Through afternoon swims in Lake Hylia to rides through the countryside, I found that our time together had taken on a different tone, one resembling more of a courtship. Clandestine as our relationship was, we refused to let the rules of others stop us. Our love was true, and I could never treat it as something wrong. I could feel us getting closer and closer, and many times we would throw our cares about our responsibilities to the wind in exchange for innocent affections. But our getaways were always tainted with fear. Not just due to the risk of getting caught, but also because we knew this couldn’t last forever, for better or worse.
I pondered how I could keep our precious connection as I sat in front of my vanity, fingering the now pressed flowers Link had given me. Despite spending days wedged between the pages of my journal, they still kept their azure hue.
I never let my father’s orders stop me, and why should they stop me now? I would always fight for my love, for Link’s love.
A knock sounded at my chamber door.
I quickly tucked the flowers back into the pages of my journal.
“Enter.” I called, hurriedly closing the vanity drawer.
One of the maids stood in the doorway of my chamber.
“Your Highness, His Majesty has requested an audience with you. You are to meet him in his chambers.”
Surprise fluttered in my chest, but I made sure to not let any of it show as I rose from the vanity.
The maid led me down the elaborate halls to my father’s chamber, briefly opening the door to announce my presence. With a curt bow, she left us alone in the room.
My father, with his flowing grey-streaked hair and gold trimmed coat, stood tall and imposing against the burning hearth. With a rumbling voice devoid of anger or pleasure, he addressed me.
“You have been late to suppertime, and just a few days ago you were almost late to court. You had always been punctual before. Care to explain these sudden disappearances?”
Internally I kicked myself for not being more careful about how long I met with Link, but I managed to remain composed.
“I…have been losing track of the time. It will not happen again, Father.” I said as I bowed my head.
My eyes closed, I heard him let out an unconvinced “Hmm…” before his footsteps moved to the chamber’s tall window.
“I have received word from the neighboring kingdoms. One of them has agreed to present their prince here as a suitor for your betrothal.”
My eyes snapped open, and I slowly drew my gaze up.
“When he arrives, the council and I will judge how worthy he is as a potential husband for–”
“And if I refuse him?”
My father turned his head to glare at me. I would hardly ever openly disobey him like this, but my passionate rejection of being forced into a loveless marriage broke my composure.
“You have the right to refuse him, however you must realize it is your duty as Hyrule’s future queen to marry and produce an heir. However many you will meet, I expect you to accept one.”
My brows furrowed and my hands balled into fists as I glared back at him in rebellion.
“And if I fall in love with another? Someone who is not of royalty–”
I was interrupted by him pounding his foot against the floor, and I flinched as he raised his voice.
“The Royal Family of Hyrule has had pure blood running through its family line for as long as time itself. You are a princess; I will not allow anything less than a prince for you.”
He advanced towards me, towering over me so I had to crane my neck up to look at him.
“You must never forget your duties, Zelda. You can not allow even love to interfere with them.”
My throat began to burn, and I forced my gaze down in frustration.
My father seemed to sense my displeased attitude, and he returned to his place at the window, his back facing me.
“You must understand, this is what is necessary to secure our future happiness.” he murmured in a more gentle tone.
I said nothing as I clenched my teeth, my sight fixed to the floor.
He let out a malcontent sigh.
“You will be notified when your suitor has arrived. You are dismissed.”
I barely heard the words when I ungraciously rushed out of his chambers, just taking care to not slam the doors.
Forcing my feet to walk steady back to my chambers, I took deep breaths in an attempt to quell the onslaught of tears, the feeling of tension in my brow. Though after I was out of sight of scrutinizing eyes, I threw myself on my bed.
I was out of time.
Conflicting emotions warred within me. Over the course of my life, I was never one to mindlessly obey whatever command my distant father would give me, at least not without secretly doing something else he would disapprove of. He never understood me, nor did he ever really try to. My heart screamed in defiance; that I couldn’t stop seeing Link, not after everything we had gone through.
But every time it would, my logic countered it. My father was right that I had a duty to my people; I could not abandon them, not like how I did those seven years locked away in time. I felt devotion for them too, and they did not deserve to suffer for something as selfish as my love.
Then my thoughts drifted to Link.
He could climb the ranks of the Royal Guard to its very top, my father made it clear that a union between us would never be approved, not by him or the Council. I had already begun to draw suspicion in regards to our meetings; continuing them while courting a suitor would be extremely difficult if not impossible without getting caught in the act. Even more so should I marry. Should we be found…
I shuddered at the thought. My father was a benevolent king and he recognized Link’s exceptional military prowess, but if our affair was discovered, Link’s life would be threatened.
I curled up into a ball, burying my face in my knees as I compelled myself to accept what I must do.
I had to protect him, even at the cost of our broken hearts, our incomparable bond torn asunder.
Despite being dried out, the pressed flowers still kept their azure hue, glowing periwinkle in the moonlight. I sat on the steps of the castle courtyard, my figure still, save for my fingers as I caressed the stems. I kept my gaze on them, trying my best to not resume my crying, only looking up when footsteps on the courtyard’s stone entrance sounded above the moat’s running water.
Link stepped out of the shadows and into the moonlit clearing, illuminating his face, handsome features lined with concern.
“You used telepathy to tell me to meet you here. You haven’t used telepathy since the night Ganondorf attacked…”
Words catching in my throat, I looked back at the flowers, keeping my eyes on them once more even as he approached and took a seat beside me on the steps.
“And we haven’t been here since we first met.”
He let out a soft chuckle.
“Wish I could say the guards have gotten more observant.”
I could feel his stare boring into my side, but I could not bring myself to look at him.
He leaned around me, trying to glimpse my face, but I turned my head away, screwing up my eyes and pressing my lips together.
“Zelda, please, tell me what’s wrong.” he gently pleaded as he took my hand.
The ache in his voice cracked my heart, and taking a deep breath, I forced myself to look at his worry-worn expression.
“One of the princes from the neighboring kingdoms is coming here. He is to be my suitor.” I said quietly.
Link said nothing, but his slowly widening eyes betrayed his shock.
“We can’t risk ourselves seeing each other anymore–”
Link’s face hardened into a mask of determination.
“Zelda, wait, what about what we talked about? I’ll get stronger, better! I’ll climb the ranks, I’ll be someone worthy of being yours…”
He trailed off as I sadly shook my head at him.
“Father is adamant that I marry a prince.”
Link softened, his eyes downcast and shifting, as if searching for a miraculous solution hidden in front of him.
I swallowed, trying to keep my resolve.
“He has also started noticing how I’ve been gone. Link, if he finds out we’ve been seeing each other…you could get killed.”
Link looked away, and I heard him let out a sigh.
“Don’t you know I’d rather run the risk of being caught and killed than risk never being with you…”
He spoke the words with such hurt, such defeat, and tears began to cloud my vision. Self-loathing suddenly pounced on me, overwhelming.
“Oh Link, I should have fought harder for you.” I began to ungracefully blubber, screwing up my eyes.
“You were right; I never let him stop me, not when I knew I was right…when did I get so weak–”
I stopped when I felt Link’s hand cup my face, opening my eyes to glimpse his tender look.
“You’re not weak, Zelda. You…have to be one of the strongest people I know.” he gently soothed as he swept his thumb underneath my eye, wiping away a tear that slid from it.
He drew me into an embrace, and I buried my face in his shoulder.
“You have no idea how much I want to…run away from it all.” I wept.
Link softly hushed me as he slowly stroked my hair.
“You would never abandon our people, and I know you would never willingly put me in danger. I’m just worried about you. Being forced to marry someone you don’t love…”
I pulled myself away, keeping my sight on his perturbed expression.
“Our meetings–being with you was the happiest I’ve ever been…but Father said I should never let love interfere with my duties. As much as I hate to admit it, this is what I have to do…to keep you safe.” I said, keeping my voice steady.
Link closed his eyes and sighed once more, his hands still clasping mine.
Finally, he reluctantly stood up.
“I should go…before anyone hears us.”
We held each other’s gaze for a while, neither of us wanting to say goodbye; the words caught in our throats.
Then he solemnly turned and began to walk back to the gardens, leaving me still sitting on the steps.
I couldn’t bear to see him go, to accept that this would be the last time we knew each other as friends, as lovers, so I turned my face down in shame, my vision falling once more on the flowers I still held in my hand.
Something inside of me jolted, spurring me to my feet, the same unknown force I felt in the glade all that time ago.
Link spun around when he heard my footsteps, and I met him in the middle of the moonlit courtyard.
I wordlessly extended the flowers toward him, letting my guilt show on my face, but he gently pushed them back to me. We locked eyes once more, a sorrowful, yet bittersweet air clinging to us as he spoke.
“Keep them, so you can always look back… and remember…” he murmured, bringing his hand softly down the side of my face. His fingertips held my chin as the dull acceptance in his eyes flared to a pained desperation. “Zelda, please do not forget about me.” he whispered.
The affliction in his voice pierced my throbbing heart, and I resolved to give him a better answer, a more deserving farewell.
In response, I stood on my tip-toes and cupped his face, closing my eyes as I brought our lips together.
I sensed his surprise, his reluctance to give into me, but I pushed forward, and eventually I felt his hands wrap around my waist, drawing me flush against him as he deepened the kiss.
Heat blossomed in my chest as we kissed again and again, warming me from head to toe. I desperately sought to feel him, to memorize the tender softness of his lips, the protective strength of his arms as he held me, the shy sweetness in his voice as our quiet moans harmonized. For what felt like an eternity, we knew nothing more than the feel of each other, our figures moulding together.
Growing breathless, we broke the kisses, our eyes still closed as we rested our foreheads against one another.
Finally, I opened my eyes, my stare fierce in the emotions I sought to convey.
“I could never forget you, Link.”
He brightened gratefully at me, love reflected in his eyes, but his pleasant mood fell once more as I gave him a gentle push.
“Now go, before I decide to never release you.” I urged, my voice breaking slightly as the tears returned.
He began to step back to the courtyard’s entrance, not letting go of my hands until only our fingertips touched.
Finally, we were drawn apart as he backed into the shadows, giving each other a subtle wave as our hands remained hovering in the air.
An apology was written over his misery-wrought face, an image I mirrored back at him.
Then Link turned around, and disappeared into the gardens.
That was the last time we ever met each other.
As the years dragged on, we became strangers. I would eventually rise as the Queen of Hyrule, fulfilling the duties my father expected of me, while Link climbed the ranks in Hyrule’s military, eventually becoming Captain at an age unparalleled to even the youngest promoted captains in history. Still, our new responsibilities only further isolated us from each other.
Without his presence to soothe me, I felt myself becoming a husk of who I used to be, my days moving past me in painful monotony as the fire of a rebellious princess died out, and as I ever saw Link stone-faced and rigid (the rare chances I did see him), I could only wonder how he was getting on. Every part of me longed to talk to him, to care for him, to know him as I once did, as no one else ever could. If nothing else, just so that I knew he was alright. We were both still so young, and already he was leading our troops to war…
I drew my furred cloak tight around me as I walked through Kakariko Village. The loud crunching of the dry leaves beneath my feet could not overpower the metallic clank of the armor of the guards behind me, which haunted my every outing since I took up the mantle of queen. Their armor was colder than the autumn breeze chilling my bones.
The sight of Kakariko struck me with a devastating wave of nostalgia, but I couldn’t let my feelings overwhelm me. Not as we reached the graveyard.
Although the overcast sky allowed no sunlight to grace such a dreary sight as the dead’s resting place, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of warmth as I approached the most recently dug grave. The grave of an exceptional captain of Hyrule’s military who curiously lacked a house name, taken far too soon in battle.
Tears welled up in my eyes as grief and guilt lodged themselves in my throat, but even in his death, I couldn’t let anyone know how I felt about him.
Parting my cloak, I held the pressed forget-me-nots out in the open air.
By now they had become disheveled, and the ends of the petals were beginning to wilt. I took great care as I laid them down on the grave, as the now brittle stems threatened to snap.
Despite the age and hardship they endured for years, they still kept their azure hue.

Silent music
Warnings: Angst, sh(mentioned), near relapse, mental breakdown, a bit dark(??), reader x Simon Riley, male!reader(he/him pronouns), he’s a sad boy, m/n doesn’t get emotions, m/n has shitty parents, self doubt, suicidal thoughts, self destructive thoughts, destructive actions. Lmk if I missed anything!!
A/n: im so bad at English so I’m so sorry if this is written terribly😭 first time writing looong angst btw🫶🏼
He laid down on his bed, the shadows dancing within the dimly lit room. The only thing lighting up the room was the sunset shining in from the outside world.
M/n sniffled, however there was no tears, his eyes dry as he stared at the ceiling, taking in a silent breath in and out, like he was scared to make a noise, scared to make himself known to the room, even though being the only one in the room.
The (h/c) man brought his hands to his face, closing his eyes as he tried, oh so hard to drown out his thoughts with blasting heavy metal into them to the point the music was leaking out of the cheap earbuds m/n bought ages ago. M/n didn’t even like heavy metal all that much, maybe a mainstream song like ‘Master of puppets’ or ‘Cluster’ hidden deep in the playlist somewhere but he never truly got into the genre.
“He won’t miss you.”
Christ.
“He’ll just move on, forget about you, he’ll be happier without you.”
M/n turned up the music louder, getting the warning he was turning up his music too high and that he might damage his ears. M/n didn’t care.
“You really think he actually loves you? That’s pathetic, your own parents never loved you, so what makes you think he really loves you?”
He flipped his position on the bed, lying on his stomach, burying his face in the pillow and hoping it would suffocate him. It didn’t work obviously, but m/n wouldn’t have minded if it did.
He lifted his head from the pillow. M/n tugged the cheap earbuds out of his ear and pulled the strings out of the earphone jack, making it automatically turn off the heavy metal from his music app. He forced himself off the bed, closing the blinds of his and his beloveds, Simon Riley’s, room, the room nothing but darkness.
He stumbled out the bedroom. The dimly lit house making it harder to navigate through the house, but not bothered to flip a switch he had to make do. As M/n trudged from room to room he looked at the photos Simon and he hung up on the walls, how they were both smiling in the pictures as they were taken. It only made him think if Simon was faking that smile, pretending to care for M/n, pretending to love M/n.
M/n shook his head, trying to rid the thoughts of negativity as he made it to the kitchen. Nearly in every room the light was off, thinking about it, they were barely on all month, not since M/n beloved was deployed. Ironic, he started to feel bad after Simon got deployed.
“Pathetic.”
The (small/tall) man inhaled sharply, opening a kitchen cabinet as he pulled out a glass. He turned to the sink and turned the faucet on, waiting 5 seconds before the tap ran cold, dunking his glass under it to stop the water from hitting the sink.
When the glass was full enough, m/n turned off the faucet, bringing the cool glass to his lips, the cold water going down his throat it felt like he froze his oesophagus. M/n put his free hand on the kitchen counter, he felt his hands tremble as he brought the glass from his dry, cracked lips. He turned around, his back leaning on the edge of the counter.
“You’ll never be good enough for him.”
And like a ticking time bomb, m/n’s glass fell out of his hand and onto the cold kitchen tiled floor, ultimately, shattering the fragile glass into shards. “Shit..” m/n cursed, if it wasn’t for the slippers he was wearing, his feet might’ve gotten hurt or started bleeding. He quickly yet carefully moved to get a cloth and a dust pan to clean up the shattered mess he made.
“How do you break everything you touch?”
M/n paused.
No. That wasn’t right.
He didn’t break everything he touched.
“Yes you do.”
M/n felt his hands shake, he inhaled sharply, letting out a shaky breath.
As soon as he tried to block out his thoughts once more he got the cloth and dust pan. Carefully scooping up the shattered glass, making sure to not cut himself.
“Do it.”
He paused again.
What?
“You know you want to.”
No. He made a promise to Simon, to himself. He’s been clean for a year, nearly two. He couldn’t go back on that path.
“No one would know. It’s nearly autumn. It’s getting colder.”
It is getting colder. He barely took his shirt off anyway..
No. He couldn’t. He can’t. Simon would figure out-
“Would he though?”
M/n quickly shook his head, cleaning the shards and tossing them in the bin and drying the water from the cold floor.
His moves, actions, they were frantic, tried to rid his thought. His hands were shaking as he got another glass from the cupboard, filling it up with water again. He turned off the faucet, bringing the cold glass to his lips.
“He would be glad if you were dead.”
“Shut up!” M/n threw his glass of water at the wall. The sound of the glass shattered, falling to the ground.
The (h/c) man sank to the floor, covering his ears and bringing his knees to his chest. He starting rocking himself back and forth, mumbling to himself, trying to reassure himself.
His eyes darted around the kitten, finally his (e/c) landing in the broken shards of glass.
“Maybe it would stop the thoughts if I just-”
Subconsciously, m/n crawled over to the shattered glass, his pj bottoms being soaked by the ice cold water. He shouldn’t, he knows he shouldn’t. But still, he picked up the broken piece of glass.
He started at the wet shard. His hands shaking, what felt like more than before, more intense.
“Go on. He wouldn’t know.”
M/n brought the sharp glass to his wrist that was riddled with healed scars.
Before the glass could pierce through the skin, he felt large hands on his own hand and shoulder.
He didn’t process anything, only the cold glass leaving his grip, then a hand on his chin, being forced to look up.
Simon.
Simon’s eyes were wide with worry. “Hey, hey, hey, look at me. Please, look at me, just focus on me luvie.” M/n noticed the trembling in his fiancé’s voice. He then felt tears welling up in his eyes. Both ashamed and relieved that his beloved was home.
“Simon..?” M/n’s voice gave out on him as Simon quickly moved to wrap his arms tightly around his sweet boy in a warm, safe hug. “It’s okay, I’m here. I’m here, sweetheart.” Simon whispered soothingly into m/n’s ear, rubbing soft and gentle circles into the other man’s back.
M/n quickly wrapped his arms around Simon’s neck, burying his face into the crook of the lieutenant’s neck. His body trembled as he sobbed.
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” M/n mustered out.
“Shh. It’s okay, love..” Simon gave M/n a small yet comforting squeeze. Soon the military man started to pepper small kisses into m/n’s temple. “You’re safe, you’re okay. I promise.” M/n sniffled, nodding as he took his Simon’s words.
Simon soon picked M/n off his feet, then feeling the instinct reaction of his beloved wrapping his legs around his waist. Simon held on tight to his beloved, making sure he didn’t fall.
“Everything’s going to be okay.” Simon whispered gently into m/n’s ear. He ignored the shattered glass in the floor and took his sweet boy to their shared bedroom.
He placed the crying boy in the bed, sitting next to the m/n, only to be tackled into a hug again. Simon wrapped his strong arms around his love, his lips pressed against m/n’s forehead. A hand rubbing the (h/c) man’s back, his other hand carding through m/n’s dyed black hair. “Nothing can hurt you now.” Simon pressed gentle kisses into M/n’s forehead.
After a few moments of sweet nothings in m/n’s ear, his body stopped trembling. Simon brought a hand to m/n’s cheek, gently cupping it with his palm. His thumb wiped away the stray tears from M/n’s cheek. It broke Simon’s heart to the man he loved so much in shambles..
M/n looked up at Simon with red, puffy eyes. “Oh my sweet boy..” Simon brought m/n into a gentle embrace again. It made M/n’s heart melt.
How could a sweetheart like Simon fucking Riley be so scary to other people?
M/n sniffled once more, snuggling into Simon’s chest. “I love you so much, you know that right?” Simon said softly to M/n.
“Yeah..I know.” M/n gave Simon a gently smile. A smile that Simon thought could brighten a whole room.
“Good.” Simon said with a gentle kiss to m/n’s forehead.

Introduction to Collective Seraphic
Now that Seraphic's at a stable place, I think I'm gonna take some time to delve into the basics of how it operates. For this post I'll only be going into the language itself and not the writing system, as that's going to need a post of its own to elaborate on. I'll try to keep this as concise as possible, but I may make separate posts expanding on topics discussed in this one. So, without further ado, onto the infodump!
Background
Collective Seraphic (which I'll be referring to as "Seraphic") is an artlang that I've created for a comic that as of this post I have not began yet, but am still developing. The majority of the comic will take place on the Seraph Homeworld, an alien planet some 3,000 lightyears from Earth populated by the seraph species (pictured below):
Within the story, Seraphic acts as the lingua franca of the Seraph Homeworld and the many colonized planets under Seraph control. It's used in the government, and among speakers of differing languages. As such, this language was the first one that I knew I would need to make as it will play a vital role in both the storytelling and narrative structure.
Syntax
Seraphic is largely a fusional language, employing affixes to modify the semantic role and meaning of morphemes. Seraphic does not, in the traditional sense, have verbs, so the sentence structure is strictly subject-object (will expand upon later). Nouns decline for number and tense, and are grouped into seven noun classes. Adjectives agree with nouns in number, except if derived from nouns themselves, in which case they'll also agree in class. Seraphic is very head-initial; with demonstratives, numerals, possesives, adjectives, genitives, and relative clauses following the noun the modify; and prepositions preceeding the nouns they modify. Auxiliaries preceed procedurals (again, will expand upon later).
Phonology
Here is the phonological chart for Seraphic:

It has a syllable structure of (CC)V(CC). Plosives cannot exist word finally, clusters of consonants of the same manner are illegal, and vowel clusters are also not permitted. Syllabic consonants are grouped with vowels and behave much like them, carrying tone and stress, so they together are grouped and referred to as vocalics. Seraphic is a tonal language, employing the use of four tones: rising (á), falling (à), high (ā), and low (a). Low tones remained unmarked in both the Seraphic script and in romanization. Stress is syllable-independant. It will take either the ultimate, penultimate, or rarely the antepenultimate. Stress always falls on the syllable with a voiceless initial obstruent nearest to the end of the word. If none are available, it will fall on the syllable with an initial sonorant within the same parameters. Stress will never fall on a voiced obstruent. For clarity, I'll provide a key describing the pronunciation of the romanization.
Sounds that are similarly pronounced as they're read in American English:
m, n, p, b, t, d, k, g, f, v, s, z, y, w, l
Sounds that have special pronunciations:
ŋ, like the ng in English "sing"
p', like the ጴ in Amharic "ጴጥሮስ"
t', like the t' in Navajo "yá'át'ééh"
k', like the კ in Georgian "კაბა"
', like the the space within English "uh-oh"
c, like the sh in English "sharp"
j, like the s in English "measure"
x, like the gh in English "ugh"
ğ, like the γ in Greek "γάλα"
pf, like the pf in German "Pfirsiche"
ts, like the z in Italian "grazia"
tc, like the ch in English "chain"
kx, like the kh in Lakota "lakhóta"
r, like the rr in Spanish "perro", although occasionally like the r in Spanish "amarillo"
i, like the ee in English "meet"
į, like the ы in Russian "ты"
u, like the oo in English "boot"
e, like the é in French "beauté"
œ, like the a in English "Tina"
o, like the o in Classical Latin "sol"
a, like the a in English "bra" although this can change to be more forward or more backward.
Another letter that might trip people up is ł, which is meant to represent the high tone syllabic 'l'. Otherwise, syllabics are written the same as their pulmonic counterparts, with tone markers written when applicable.
Nouns
Nouns make up the bulk of the Seraphic lexicon. Every noun is grouped into one of seven classes:
Solar class: nouns related to seraphim or seraph-like beings, and seraph body parts. Prefix appears as zā-, zō-, zē-, s-, or ts-.
sēr = "person"
Astral class: nouns related to non-seraph animate lifeforms (their equivalent to "animals"). Prefix appears as ğr-, x, or kx-.
xuc = "cherub"
Vital class: nouns related to inanimate lifeforms (their equivalent to "plants"). Prefix appears as wā-, wō, w-, ū-, wē-, or wī-.
wējlux = "tree"
Terranean class: nouns related to landscapes, locations, and natural phenomena. Prefix appears as va-, vo-, vu-, f-, and pf-.
voxāl = "sun"
Metallic class: nouns related to inanimate objects, both natural and artificial. Prefix appears as ja-, jo-, c-, or tc-.
jağrú = "rock"
Lunar class: nouns related to abstract concepts, and terms related to time. Prefix appears as la-, lo-, le-, li-, y-, or l/ł-.
levren = "job"
Oceanic class: nouns related to general words, tangible concepts, numbers, all adjectives, and non-incorporated loanwords. Prefix appears as a/ā-, o/ō-, or aw-.
awuf = "group"
Adjectives do not agree in class, due to the fact that nouns originally are derived from adjectives, and noun classes acted as a way to differentiate between nouns and adjectives.
fa = "warm, hot"
jafa = "fire" (lit. "a hot thing")
When adjectives are used as predicatives, they decline into the oceanic class in order to take the procedurals (once more, will expand upon later).
Nouns also decline for four numbers: singular (one thing, usually unmarked), dual (two things, both things; suffixes as -ac, -oc, -œc, or -c), plural (things, many thing; suffixes as -n, -an, or -in), and collective (every thing, all things; suffixes as -āf/ōf, -áf/-óf, or -'ōf).
Seraphic doesn't use pronouns. Everything and everyone is referred to by name, including yourself. From our perspective, the Seraphic language constantly speaks in the third person. However, it can be repetitive to use the same name over and over again in a sentence, and sometimes you don't know the name of things, so they'll apply what I've called pro-forms. They consist of the demonstrative adjectives fl "this", sl "that", and xl "yon" declined into the Solar class and taking the place of the first, second, and third person respectively. For ease of reference, I'll provide the forms and their declensions below.
zāfl (I/me), zāflc (both of us), zāvlin (we/us), zāfláf (all of us)
zāsl (you), zāslc (both of you), zāzlin (you guys), zāsláf (all of you)
zōxl (they), zōxlc (both of them), zōğlin (many of them), zōxláf (all of them)
Seraphic makes no distinction in the gender of the speaker, in this regard. Although these resemble pronouns, they're not meant to be used as often as regular pronouns, and whenever possible it's much preferred that you refer to someone or something by name.
Adjectives and Prepositions
Adjectives are fairly straightforward. Adjectives follow the noun they modify (e.g. sēr tan "big person"), and agree with them in number (e.g. sēr tan "big person" vs sērn t'aŋon "big people"). Adjectives agree in the singular form with singular and collective nouns, and they agree in the plural form with dual and plural nouns.
There are three main types of adjectives: native adjectives (e.g. cna "good"), borrowed adjectives (e.g. anzn "nice"), and noun-derived adjectives (e.g. arfi/ofi "new"). Native and borrowed adjectives don't agree with noun classes, but noun-derived adjectives do. It originated from the animacy-based adjective agreement system in Proto-Seraphic, which has been lost in all other adjective instances. When you want to make a noun into an adjective you'll affix one of two prefixes to it: ar- (if agreeing with Solar, Astral, and Vital nouns) and o- (if agreeing with Terranean, Metallic, Lunar, and Oceanic nouns). There are specific rules on the forms each prefix takes based on the noun they're attached to:
"ār-" when preceeding high or falling vocalic syllables (e.g. sēr ārzājna "popular person")
"ar-" when preceeding low or rising vocalic syllables (e.g. wēn arfe "local fruit")
"ó-" when preceeding high or falling vocalic syllables (e.g. lalel ówē "grassy flavor")
"o-" when preceeding low or falling vocalic syllables (e.g. lesar olvulvren "economic problem")
"ōw-" when preceeding words that start with a vocalic (e.g. lnin ōwāsāvbas "momentary event")
Prepositions occur before the nouns they modify, and don't change form in any circumstance. There are currently 19 prepositions in the modern language, and they are usually connected to nouns via a hyphen (e.g. e-fe "at (the) place"):
cu = of; indicates possession
pr̄ = indicates the indirect object, equivalent to "to" in the phrase "The man sends the letter to me."
in/īn = as or like; indicates similarity or resemblance. Will either be low or high tone depending on the tone of the following syllable.
e/ē = at or on; indicates location.
tsa = near or for; indicates relative distance from a location or an action performed for the sake of the referent.
cni = without; indicates a lack of possession or company.
wa = in or inside of; indicates interior position.
tn = on top of, above, or before; indicates superior position or a prior instance in time.
pux = under, beneath, or after; indicates inferior position or a following instance in time.
pi = with, together with; indicates being in company of or making use of the referent.
fān = from or away from; indicates the motion of leaving the referent.
ku = out of; indicates motion from within the referent towards the exterior.
tun = into or through; indicates motion from outside the referent towards the interior.
xel = to or towards; indicates the motion of approaching the referent.
kxun = across; indicates motion from one location to another
pn̄ = around; indicates location surrounding the referrent.
cāza = between; indicates location in the middle of the referrent.
tē = after, behind; indicates posterior position.
fr = during; indicates a moment in time
Prepositions aren't combined in Collective Seraphic, but may be in certain instances in colloquial speech.
Procedurals
Okay, this is probably the most complicated part of Seraphic, so I'm going to need to get into things individually. First, I'll start with defining a procedural itself. Procedurals are the term I use for the prefixes used to describe the relationship or process of and between the agent noun and the patient noun. These are what act as the equivalent to "verbs" in earth languages. There are three in use:
Existential: used to denote a state of being or equivalence between agent and patient, or to the patient and itself. Equivalent to English "to be" (e.g. A is B, there is B). Usually prefixes as some variant of n-, m-, or ŋ-.
Actional: used to denote an action or process between the agent and patient, or with the patient and itself. Equivalent to English "to do" or "to act upon" (e.g. A acts upon B). Carries a connotation of agency and intent. Usually prefixes as some variant of re-, ra-, or r-.
Resultative: used to denote an occurence or change in state between agent and patient, or patient and itself. Equivalent to English "to become", "to happen", or "to change into" (e.g. A becomes B, B happens to A). Carries a connotation of passiveness or motion. Usually prefixes as some varient of ed- or ez-.
The procedural will change its form slightly depending on the class and declension pattern of the noun it modifies. It always affixes to the patient noun, demonstrating a relationship of an action and what is being acted upon. In this way, the patient can be clearly identified. In transitive or causative clauses, the word order is always S(P)O, with the agent acting as the subject and the patient as the object. In intransitive and passive clauses, the word order is always (P)S, with the patient acting as the subject and the agent demoted to the indirect object or omitted entirely.
Although seemingly limiting, using these three procedural, as well as prepositions, nouns, and adjectives, altogether can be used to make all sorts of verb equivalents that are called "procedural phrases". I'll demonstrate how to build a sentence now. First thing we need to know is the subject and object:
Sāx ... jafa (The child ... the fire)
Next, I'll add the actional procedural in the present tense to this.
Sāx rejafa (The child acts upon the fire)
By itself this is technically grammatically correct, but it doesn't really mean anything. It's too broad. So we add a prepositional phrase to specify exactly what action the child is taking towards the fire.
Sāx pi-sīman rejafa (The childs acts upon the fire with (their) eyes)
Now we know that the child is performing an action involving the use of their eyes. Now of course this could mean many different things in English, but in Seraphic the first thing that comes to mind would be fairly obvious: to see! Thus, "Sāx pi-sīman rejafa" would be the same as saying "The child sees the fire" in English! There are a lot of set phrases that equate to verbs, and remain consistent in their arrangement. Often differing phrases are a useful way to ascertain where someone is from or what their first language is.
Tense and Aspect
Seraphic has six main tenses: two pasts, two presents, and two futures. The two pasts consist of the recent past (happening recently) and the remote past (happening a long time ago), and they prefix and/or combine with the procedural.
Sāx pi-sīman ğrejafa (The child just saw the fire)
Sāx pi-sīman eğrejafa (The child saw the fire a while ago)
Similarly, the future tenses consist of the near future (will happen soon) and the distant future (will happen eventually).
Sāx pi-sīman drejafa (The child will soon see the fire)
Sāx pi-sīman izrejafa (The child will eventually see the fire)
The present tenses consist of a general present tense (happens) and the infinitive (to happen) which is used with auxiliaries and copulae and carries no presence in time.
Sāx pi-sīman rejafa (The child sees the fire)
Pi-sīman ezrejafa (To see a fire)
Whether someone considers an event to be nearer or farther in time from them is completely up to their discretion. There's no set timeframe for when to use the recent vs. remote past, it's all fairly subjective. However, whether you decide to use the recent or remote can really indicate whether you believe something to be in the distant past or future, or just a few moments ago or soon.
Seraphic also makes use of two copulae, the perfective -r and the imperfective -l, helping clitics that expand on the aspect of the procedural, i.e. how the procedural happens over time instead of when in time. The copulae are separate from the procedural, being placed directly before it and conjugating on their own similarly to the lexical procedural. When the copulae are in use, they are conjugated instead of the lexical procedural, while the lexical will be put into the infinitive. The exception to this is if the point in time is considered necessary to be stated for the sake of clarity or emphasis, in which case the lexical verb will also conjugate (though this isn't considered to be the default). The two copulae each conjugate to six tenses, and give 12 individual aspects in total. They are as follows, starting with the perfective:
āgxōnr - Pluperfect: indicates that the action happened at a point before some time in the past either specified or implied (e.g. āgxōnr nidsl "that has happened")
xōnr - Preterite: indicates that the action happened in the past with no reference to if it was completed recently or remotely. A general past (e.g. xōnr nidsl "that happened")
nar - Relative: indicates relative clauses, i.e. clauses that act to modify a noun similarly to an adjective. Equivalent to "that", "who", or "which" (e.g. lsl nar nidsl "the thing that happens")
ednr - Gnomic: indicates general truths, common knowledge, and aphorisms (e.g. ednr nezłsl "things happen")
t'enr - Future Simple: indicates the action will happen in the future with no regard to how near or far it is from the present (e.g. t'enr nidsl "that will happen")
āt'ēnr - Future Perfect: indicates that the action will happen before a time or event in the future (e.g. āt'ēnr nidsl "that will have happened")
And the imperfective:
ŋ̄xōzl - Discontinuous: indicates that an action was happening in the past, but is no longer happening in the present (e.g. ŋ̄xōzl nidsl "that used to happen")
xōzl - Habitual: indicates that an action is done often or out of habit (e.g. xōzl nidsl "that always happens")
īzl - Progressive: indicates that an action is happening at the very moment of conversation (e.g. īzl nidsl "that is happening")
nizl - Prospective: indicates that an action will be starting to, or is in the process of happening (e.g. nizl nidsl "that is about to happen")
t'ezl - Iterative: indicates that an action happens again, repeatedly, or more than one time based on context (e.g. t'ezl nidsl "that happens again" or "that happens again and again")
nt'ezl - Continuative: indicates that an action happens continuously and without end (e.g. nt'ezl nidsl "that still happens")
With both tense and aspects, this largely expands the capability of Seraphic in referring to time.
Moods
Seraphic makes use of seven modal particles to denote seven moods. They are always placed at the beginning of clauses, and no two modal particles can exist in the same clause. They are grouped into four categories: the declaritive (indicative and negative), the inferential (evidential and interrogative), the deontic (volitive and imperative), and the epistemic (subjunctive and conditional). They add extra clarity in the speakers mood or opinion concerning the clause they modify, and are as follows:
Indicative: base form of a clause. Indicates that the speaker is stating a fact or what exists, and is unmarked (e.g. idsl "that happens")
tu - Negative: indicates that the speaker is stating a fact that is untrue or what doesn't exist. Usually only appears in formal, official texts, as the first syllable of the procedural will chage tone to contrast as well and leaves the particle unneccesary in colloquial speech (e.g. tu īdsl "that doesn't happen")
cuc - Evidential: indicates that the speaker is stating a fact that they believe or understand to be true, regardless of having experienced it or not. (e.g. cuc idsl "apparently that happens") Direct evidentiality is denoted using a different method.
an/ān - Interrogative: indicates that the speaker is confirming whether a statement is or isn't true. Forms questions (e.g. an idsl? "does that happen?")
tcān - Volitive: indicates that the speaker desires for the statement to be true (e.g. tcān idsl "that wants to happen" or "that needs to happen" or "that should happen")
má - Imperative: indicates that the speaker is giving a command or suggestion, to themselves and/or to other referents. Functions additionally as a cohortative and a jussive (e.g. má idsl! "let that happen!")
tir - Subjunctive: indicates that the speaker believes the statement to be possible or likely (e.g. tir idsl "that could/would/might happen")
nun - Conditional: indicates that speaker believes the statement to be possible under specific circumstances or conditions (nun idsl "if/when that happens..."
Miscellaneous
That's about the basics of the Seraphic language outline. I'd like to eventually get into things like comparison, evidentiality, declension forms and the like, but those are all topics that definitely need their own individual posts. Real quick, I want to provide one more additional fact about Seraphic.
Seraphic uses base-16, meaning it groups numbers in sets of 16 instead of sets of 10 like we do. 1-16 would be written 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10. 10 would be read as 16, and equally 20 would be 32. They're still counting the same amount of things, they're just dividing it up differently!
Anyways that's about it, I hope to share more about Seraphic soon, and when the comic gets released I hope you'll all be able to read it and pick out the many many lines of Seraphic I've poured into it!
ŋKowīci cu-stux 'ōf tsa-levp'ā cu-zāsláf pi-lizt'n ğōdjasa! (Thank you all so much for reading!)

Reference the videos if you need a visual aid for my notes. ✦ Team A: 1:30 clear. I gambled on Galaxy Explorer to get my red pair to R3 so I can meet the stats for this. Thankful that it was just enough! Team A notes: - Time use of active skills/resonance after picking up beacon to utilize the damage buff. - Don't delay on resonance for the first two fights, to buy yourself as much time as possible for the third fight. - Don't push Luminivore past 80% 3x HP or it will lock. Hold off damage until shieldbreak. - Must get a Searing Slash into weakness for Luminivore and Ignis Wyrmlord. Watch the video for how I gathered the beacon stacks. - For the dragon fight, critting on your active skills before shieldbreak helps a lot towards a clear. - To reduce the distance of dragon's dash attack, position yourself with your back facing the closest wall. The dash tends to be the third or fourth attack if it happens. - Final shieldbreak at 1:43 max. ✦ Team B: I was excited to use X-02 for the first time in SHC! He didn't disappoint. 1:33 clear, Oath's Strength and Oath Recovery betas. Oath Recovery is crucial for the fight timing. Team B notes: - I make frequent use of active skill -> resonance -> clusters into weakness in this fight. - Lock onto a target and start building Particle stacks with charged attack -> 2BA combo. Locking is important to keep your attacks aimed at the debuffed target. - I prefer locking onto a Pale Myst (white) because its moves are less erratic = less likely for clusters to miss. - Dark Mysts (black) will get close to you, Pale Mysts will back away from you. Circle around and get in front of the Pale Mysts to make them back up against the other mobs. - Use charged active skill when your oath is charged to 40-45% -> resonance. The oath gauge should immediately fill/be a sliver to filling. - During oath, switch targets often between Synced Strikes to distribute the damage evenly between the mysts. You MUST kill the whole wave after each weakness. - Aim to start wave 3 at 2:00 or earlier. - Getting active skill clusters to hit during weakness helps a lot towards damage. - Final shieldbreak at 1:43 max. ✦ Team C: 1:30 clear. Birthday boy challenge because "I like a difficult fight" okay buddy you asked for it! Happy Birthday Sylus! Team C notes: - Resonance as soon as you enter the arena. Support skill on the middle enemy to apply charged Devour Mark. - Follow up with active skill from the side. If I can't group at least 2 of the enemies to the same side, I restart the fight. - The quicker you can finish the first wave, the better. - For Thunderoar, do resonance -> active skill -> quickly into support skill. Do the same thing later for the deer's shieldbreak. I find that doing support skill -> active skill instead makes it trickier to fit the second active skill into the charged Devour Mark window. - Wave 2 has to end at 2:05 or earlier. - The deer can go into a lock phase at around 50-60% 4x HP, be careful that you don't push damage too far before shieldbreak. - Final shieldbreak at 1:45 max.

Ultimate Pokémon Horizons fan theory: WHAT IS RAKUA AND WHAT IS RAKURIUM OF ALL THINGS!!! ULTIMATE SPOILER WARNING!!!
Hello guys, Star-Arcana here and I wanna posit my best theory on Pokémon Horizons best and greatest mystery in the storyline so far:
WHAT IS RAKUA!!!
Rakua is the ancient Pokémon Paradise of fables and legends, according to Lucius and many others characters both in the past and present. It's a mythical paradise on top of a mountain, or many mountain? However it is ultimately geographically speaking, to us, currently unknown, only that it took an overseas adventure to get there with Rayquaza and the others guiding Lucius and his friends. It exists really as Lucius and his friends believe, and is a lush, green enviroment with a lot of Pokémon there, alongside them legendary Pokémon in great numbers, too. Like for instance a trio of the Legendary Kanto birds, Latios and Latias, and even a Terrakion and a Virizion, all being happy, enjoying the tranquility and peace of Rakua. Basically the most bountiful place on earth, a true Garden Eden. Gibeon,Rystal and Lucius fond that place to be truly beautfiul, but also found about it's most benefactory boon , and most dangerous curse: Rakurium!
WHAT IS RAKURIUM!!!
Rakurium is given this name by Gibeon, due to being from Rakua. Also known by the Explorer's own company Exceed as "eternal blesssing", Rakurium is a rare, pink ore found in Rakua. It is the source of this place bounty, and the reason why so many legendaries exist there. It's a constantly renewable energy source that when faced with force, rapidly expands and increases in size and power. When unearthed from the ground via force, it begins to renew itself and create more clusters of itself. Basically an infinite expanding matter with near endless power.
It also possesses the ability to enhance the growth, longlivety and strenght of plant-life, as seen with the many large trees and sudden growth of them in various places.
With Pokémon, it enhances their powers, when they get exposed to it's gas form, allowing Spinel's Umbreon to one-shot Ceruledge the one time on Glaseado Mountain.
Lucius and Gibeon as humans lived via Rakurium's "eternal blessing", long lives with their youth preserved, as seen with Lucius for instance in the trailer for the end of the Rakua storyline, while Gibeon, being exposed to less Rakurium, only aged slightly.
However that power Rakurium holds is beyond a shadow of a doubt, VERY dangerous!!!
While it can enhance the growth of Flora, it can also due to overexposure, destroy it and leave only a barren wasteland surrounded by the pink mist of Rakurium.
That Pink mist also turns Pokémon hostile empowered by it, who would have been otherwise peaceful without exposure to that gas. Also in addition to all of this, Rakurium's ever expanding potential as renewable, even limitless power, is described by Lucius and Rystal soo dangerous and powerful, that if it's continuing to spread, it can easily overwhelm the entire world, devour it and destroy it due to it's infinite potential of power and growth. Rakua is insanely dangerous and rightfully feared and unfortunately desired by the avaricious Gibeon.
However Rakurium has a natural counter:
Terastal energy, especially emitted by the Legendary Pokémon, Terapagos, who is said to be the origin of Terastal crystals and it's power. As seen in the same episodes where Pagogo, Rystal's and now Liko's Terapagos, came in contact wiht Rakurium, it not only neutralizes it's effects, it can absorb and even empower itself with it, without going feral. Spinel thinks these powers are opposed, but I disagree, and I think they are connected to one another, in fact, I believe that...Rakurium and Terastal Energy are the same element, but diffrently charged!
Tera crystals and Rakurium theory!!
Due to the exchange of effects Tera Crystals and Rakurium have to one another, I assume they are one and the same material, or at the very least, related to one another. I am no chemist, so I have not the highest authority to speak intellectually on such a topic, so please feel free to correct me on the science, if I am wrong.
So, I assume that due to diffrent enviroments and other factors, Tera Crystals change to Rakurium and vice versa and due to this share this connection. Tera Crystals allow for the Terastal phenomenon in which the energies can change the type of a Pokémon or reinforce the power of an existing type. The Pokémon Terapagos, as a being made of Terastal power, can even attain the power of all types in the form of it's Stellar type containing each and every single of them, especially seen on it's shell having the symbol of each Pokémon type. In addition to this, Terastal energy is strong enough to even open the doors to past and future timelines, which brought the Paradox Pokémon to Paldea's great Crater. Some say Terastal crystals are not so much bringing these Pokémon from diffrent timelines and time periods, but also perhaps create these Pokémon based on expectations of others and even created these beings. Anyway Terapagos is Pokémon with powers only few Pokémon posses. The power, as the name implies, is deeply connected to that of the cosmos, perhaps it IS the very power of the cosmos. Only one Pokémon is said to be behind the powers of the universe, in fact, it CREATED it! Arceus the creator god of Pokémon according to legends, uses the plates to give it power of all types, and perhaps the plates are what allowed the Pokémon to create the universe with it, as Pokémon Legends Arceus implies told us, when the Universe was created, it's shard became plates...but what if the shards didn't all became plates and instead...something else!
Terastal Crystals and Rakurium are the building block of this universe, and all living Pokémon!
If true, this is the biggest lore upgrade since gen 4, and I wanna explain why I believe that. Typings are important in Pokémon, they give the Pokémon power and as Arceus holds with it's plates the power of all types, it clearly means that whoever has power over all types is a cosmic being, because the power of the cosmos, IS THE POWER OF ALL TYPES. As established, The universe's fragments, the star dusts created the plates with the types, and the power of these plates are within Pokémon, a.k.a their typings. The power of the universe is therefore the power of the types, and as the Stellar type is all times in unision, it must be the original type from which all originates, hence Stellar type...so Tera Crystals are the prima materia of the Pokémon world. When changed however into Rakurium, it vitalizes organisms like humans, plants and Pokémon, perhaps even affecting Prokaryotes, the first organisms. So I think this happened back then in the prehistoric past of Pokémon!
Pokémon's origin story Nr.3: A Meteor brought us Pokémon!
According to lore, Paldea's Crater was formed a millions of years ago, with the cause being unknown, but given how large the crater is, a massive meteor crashing on earth would have allowed for the creation of such a massive crater, like the one that ended the Dinosaur Age. So i assume a massive Meteor with Tera Crystals and crashed in Paldea and scathered across the world many of it's shards, with Kitakami having massive amounts of Tera Crystals there. However some of the Tera Crystals became Rakurium due to the sudden change of enviroment or were perhaps were within the Meteorite that brought Tera Crystals, and were changed prior. However both meet at one place with enough quantities to infuse with the other, while surrounding the smaller organisms that existed. These organisms fed of the Rakurium and Tera Crystal combination and became the first Pokémon, the origin of all Pokémon, Mew. As Psychic is the closest to the power of the cosmos, naturally the first Pokémon must have been a psychic type, as most of the Tera crystals were converted into Rakurium and only a small portion of Tera Crystals gave Mew the power of Psychic typings, but also the power to learn all moves as the origin of all Pokémon. With Arceus having created the universe, so did he created the Stardust that contains Tera Crystals, which in turn contained the power of the cosmos, and with some of it converting into Rakurium, landed on earth, both of it forming the building blocks for Pokémon's existence as a lifeform and thus being the missing link in the history of Pokémon's creation.
Terapagos could however be born sorely from Terastal Energy in Paldea, and being thus the personification of the very power that created the cosmos, and is the cosmos, basically being the relative to the first Pokémon and being therefore, amongst the first Pokémon in existence alongside Mew.
Speaking of Mew, with it's origins being well known, thus the location of Rakua is well known, and THAT is the final piece of evidence I super effectively use to make my final theory:
Rakua is in Guyana and Pokémon's Garden Eden!!!
Guyana is a country within the real world, it is in South America, both of which exist in Pokémon. Mew is said to originate from Guyana, as it was first discovered there, so if Rakurium and Tera energy created Mew, then that means that Rakua IS in Guyana, a place where mountains do exists, with flat-plateuas, similiarly shown in the trailer:

Rakua is said to take 100 days and night on foot from Paldea's center, but as Rystal said, they were overseas on their way to reach it, and did so, because Rayquaza helped them, meaning they first have to cross the wide oceans, and with Paldea being the based on the Iberian Penninsula, it makes sense for an overseas travel to end in South America, a place that Spain historically visited, and saw a lot of conflict due to the avarice of the explorers, in this case Gibeon and his reformed group, not the OG Explorers under Lucius...meaning he can be see as a small allegory for the Spanish's greed and colonization of places with rich resources, though that is a bit of a stretch perhaps, since that would be a hella lot of implications.
But my post isn't about this, it is about the fact that Rakua is the origin place of all Pokémon as we know them, thus being the Garden Eden of this world...with Arceus as god creating the universe, and life being created via Meteors carrying the building blocks, that being Tera Crystals and Rakurium, and forming Rakua, the Garden Eden from which the first Pokémon came from, and spread from there!
This makes Gibeon's Zygarde a perfect choice as this story's villains ace, since a snake tempted in the real world's eden humans to cost from forbidden fruits, but Lucius and Rystal resisted that temptation, Gibeon did not, and thus the original sin of greed created tragedy and evil within Horizon's world of Pokémon.
Also it would fit with the timeline from which Lucius originated, since based on our world, the search for Eden began around that time, and while we found no Tree of Knowledge, we found the place where it was based on and enriched our understanding of the world...btw that place is Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq, Syria and Kuwait e.t.c.
So based on the idea that several humans in real history set out to discover new things and new lands, Lucius's story being based on proving the existence of an actual paradise means that this story really is about discovery, but not necessarily discovery of places, but of ourself. Lucius and Rystal were heroes who respected and loved that world, Gibeon does not and needs to be stopped, especially with his insane desire for more Rakurium and even caring nothing for this world's safety, as thr trailer made clear, he would even see it die to get Rakurium. So Liko, Roy, Dot, Amethio, Friede and Lucius have to stop Gibeon from defiling the place of creation!
Conclusion: Rakua and Rakurium is Garden Eden and the Clay of Pokémon! Terastal Energy and Terapagos being part of this a well!

So what do you think, a cool theory or not? Tell me in the comments below!

No. 31 - Croatia Airlines (and other shapes)
I'll be honest, anon - I'm with you. I like the squares. I don't love the entire package, but I love the squares. I feel like that's just not a shape you see often when it comes to liveries. You see a lot of lines and rectangles but it's so rare you even see a rhombus or something. The world of parallelograms is so much wider! (Or in this case equilateral.) Croatia Airlines is working with something pretty nice here, and I just wish they'd lean even further into it.
I think it's very nice that they didn't stop at the tail, either. They recognized that this pattern of staggered squares can and should extend off the tail to the main body, and I appreciate that. I just wish they'd committed to the bit a little more, which is sort of the running theme - they are working with a fantastic base idea that could really stand out if they just pushed it a little farther.
Now, in their most recent deliveries (this plane, 9A-CTN "Osijek", was delivered 2020 and is their second newest plane with the actual newest being in a [clenches fist] Star Alliance livery) they've stopped painting the belly blue and in a slightly uncharacteristic moment I actually prefer this. I like the sleekness of the white engines and I like that the squares get more room to spread out and breathe.
Plus, now there are more squares visible from below! Honestly, I think my main criticism is that this needs more squares! Bigger squares and more of them! It creates this lovely unusual dithering effect and making it cover more of the fuselage, adding some to the nacelles...I think you'd have a solid livery!
I'm going to contrast two liveries I think are kind of conceptually similar but ultimately succeed and fail in different places. Rossiya's 2016 livery, Brussels Airlines' 2021 livery, and Croatia Airlines are sort of a shape trifecta. Croatia is of course squares.
Brussels gets off easy, because they use circles, and polka-dots are a relatively easy shape to work with. Though admittedly they contrast with angular airframes, the color-blocking Brussels uses is pretty intuitive to pull off while creating a nice bit of excitement. Any airline which uses circles ends up looking a bit pop-art (and I will say I like the Brussels Airlines wordmark in this sense as well) but this is where the white body really hinders this livery and prevents it from quite hitting home. Just look at it next to Flair Airlines, which also uses circles - the difference is extremely clear. Plus, the red being limited to the tail does make the airframe look asymmetrical despite there being a fairly equal distribution of Stuff. This is mitigated on stubbier airframes, but I don't really factor that in for this or other liveries - you have to alter your design for other airframes, otherwise you're judged for your weakest links.
So Brussels gets a C. It is completely adequate.
Rossiya (a very strangely named airline) is triangles. I really like the approach here, where everything clusters in and then spreads out, and I like the amount of the fuselage it covers. Unfortunately, I feel like the way they've chosen to handle the spreading-out is just worse than how Croatia Airlines does it. The dismantling of the triangles leads to a sort of pockmarked appearance and I think just making them smaller and smaller, like Croatia's squares, could be far more elegant. Liveries that only use white and one other color, even if it's this super vivid shade of red, also tend to look a little flat to me - both Brussels and Croatia use a combination of secondary blues and reds and that suits them both very nicely. It's, I don't know...it's flat and crowded at the same time. It's bizarre.
Look, even a tiny bit of blue and white really adds a nice pop! Imagine what could happen if it was used for, say, shading. After all, Russian carriers are working with the same flag colors as Croatia is.
(I just want to put out there that this plane - the as-of-yet-undelivered-and-probably-won't-be-for-a-while Irkut MC-21 launch airframe - is named Дед Мороз, which could be considered the Russian equivalent to something like Saint Nicholas.)
This looks a lot better on the 747 due to the extra space balancing it a little. A lot of liveries do. I feel like this blog makes me seem like a massive humphead (new term for 747 fans) when I actually am not a huge 747 fan, but the extra vertical space and inherent balance against the height of the tailfin just makes a lot of liveries sit nicer on them.
I do like the wordmark, though R is probably the easiest letter to work with for logos (and I do think it's strange that the Latin R is used in place of the Cyrillic Р given that this airline is...Russian. I mean, its name is literally 'Russia', in Russian. Also, Riyadh Air does it better).
Rossiya gets a C, though a far more conflicted one than Brussels.
I like the concept way more, but there are a few major stumbles in implementation which make me unable to fully like it. They probably have time to design a better livery before they actually get their MC-21, though.
Now back to our actual subject, Croatia. I don't even mind the shiny white the way I do most of the time because it gives the squares room to play and matches the flag of Croatia. As do, as it were, the squares.
To be honest, though, I think the current iteration of the livery is saved by the fact that Croatia Airlines operates a relatively small fleet of 13 aircraft, with the jet portion exclusively comprised of lovely stubby A319s (and one Star Alliance A320). The limited coverage of the squares would be...a lot more apparent on a longer plane (see: Brussels Airlines).
A super long-looking turboprop like the Q400, for example.
Now, props (heh) to them: the blue underbelly really saves this on a plane where the square pattern, when projected exactly as on an A319, doesn't even reach the main fuselage underside. I think the squares look better on a triangular tail for contrast too, and the t-tail does it no favors. (This is why you should adjust your livery for different models of airplane! Barely any modern carriers do it and it's a real shame, because square-on-triangle can create such a nice staccato effect, especially on an already-stubby airframe!) On the other hand, the shorter airframe makes the drop-off in square size a little less dramatic, which I like.
Not a fan of just the website on the nacelles, either. You're a flag carrier! Take yourself a little more seriously!
I like what Croatia Airlines is starting with. They're sitting on something really admittedly neat that could really be a showstopper if they leaned into it more. I think Croatia, if they tried harder, could easily get a B+ at least from me, just for how cool and unique the squares are. They're a hard shape to work with, but they're already off to a good start here - if they follow this path onwards they could make something really special.
Like I mentioned earlier, Croatia Airlines has a very small fleet. It began with very questionable economic prospects given its emergence from the turbulent mire that was late Yugoslav SFR, and it's basically never turned a profit given it's a government-owned full-service airline that only flies small planes (and, from what I've heard, provides pretty solid service on par with other European flag carriers). That said, it's been able to grow pretty consistently, and this has included new airplanes, with the most recent development being plans to acquire several (between 6 and 15) A220 models. I think the small A220 will suit the squares well, and they'll certainly have time to refine the design while they rework their fleet.
Croatia Airlines...gets a C.
That said, I think this is the best of the Shapes Trifecta and I think it has a lot of room to grow. Unlike Rossiya and Brussels, which feel like they need to rethink their implementation, Croatia just needs to do more with it - they've made the back half of a good livery and just need to add the front half. But I think, if they take my advice (and I do know the government of Croatia reads my blog), they could make a really fantastic livery that punches above their fleet's weight class. As is, I'm already very endeared to their planes, and they just need to do what they're already doing but commit to it even more, because they've got something really nice going.
I'm excited to see their A220s arrive!

well, since you're alright with it, i'm not gonna hold back lol
first of all, i just need to mention interstellar because i love that movie too. though for me it's less about the science and space and more about the way it's made. not to bring my passion into this but it's just such a great movie. the cinematography is fucking incredible and the story is just so insanely good.
continuing, wormholes are just so fascinating to me as a concept!! it would be so cool to find out if they're able to exist and especially if we could "create" them.
ganymede is another moon i think is super pretty to look at. i don't know how to explain it but i really love the way the surfaces look like their own little universes i guess??? that's the best way i can describe it lol
and titan really sounds interesting!! i'm definitely gonna look into the missions you talked about, would love to find out what they could find in samples from there.
last but not least, relating back to something you mentioned, but do you believe in life outside of our planet/solar system??? personally, i think there's actually a pretty high chance of us not being alone in the universe, especially because space is, like, big beyond comprehension lol for me, the thing is more about if we're ever going to be able to get in contact with other life forms (especially in a time were, like, both of us are still alive lol)
oh I wholeheartedly agree—the cinematography in interstellar is phenomenal. I don't know much about the subject, but, after I watched the movie, I turned to my friend and told him about the cinematic beauty of the movie. also!! never apologize about bringing your passion into the conversation!! I'd love to hear more abt the cinematography in interstellar :3
as for the story, I loved it so much. If I didn't major in astronomy, I was gonna major in creative writing. Like—writing is one of my biggest passions, and a common theme I like to both write about and read about is hope. And, ultimately, I feel like that's what interstellar was about. Hope. That no matter how dire it is, hope is always worth it.
Because the people on Earth could have given up and just lived out their lives and not tried. A lot of people wanted to do that. But Murph never gave up. The people chosen to find a new planet for humanity? They could have just gone with Plan B and started from scratch. But they didn't give up. And even after everything went horribly, they could have given up and tried to build on that barely hospitable planet. But they tried that crazy maneuver with using the black hole's gravity, and they didn't give up.
Not only does hope appeal to me in narratives, but it's a big part of why I love space. Space and space exploration in may ways is a representation of hope. At least in my mind.
I think that visually, there's a lot of beauty in a lot of planets and moon. I love the way you described Ganymede's surface :3
Extra terrestrial life??? I absolutely believe there's life out there. I did an entire school project on the statistics back in high school, but, statistically speaking, it's nearly impossible for there to be no life anywhere but this planet. Like you said, space is so big that people just can't truly comprehend it. And it's still expanding.
I think there are a lot of factors to consider when thinking about why we haven't run into any "intelligent" life. (in astronomy, the phrase intelligent life is used to mean life that both wonders about their place in the stars and has the means to send and receive signals from space).
Some of the more intriguing answers to this "paradox" (if life is abundant why haven't we seen it?) are the following:
a) maybe we're just not interesting enough to alien life to be worth communicating
b) it's possible that there's just no other life/intelligent life in this galaxy or even our cluster of galaxies
c) we don't know the timescale at which life exists on. everything we know about life in the universe comes from Earth, and we just haven't been around long enough to know. life on Earth has existed for an incredibly small amount of time. we don't know if life—let alone our definition of intelligent life—exists on a time scale of thousands of years, millions of years, or billion of years. if it's on the lower end of the scale, then it's possible that we just don't be around at the same time as other life (sad)
But, I don't know, I have hope. I have hope that one day humanity will meet other life. Maybe we'll create wormholes and travel to galaxy clusters far far away and find life there. Maybe life will find us. Maybe life in the universe is just beginning, and maybe everyone is simply around the same stage as us.
But I think it's so amazing that people have looked up and the night sky and wondered what's out there. Wondered who's out there. Is anyone out there? I mentioned this before, but space exploration to me is about hope. The hope that Earth wasn't a fluke and that other life does exist. The hope that maybe this—the wonder of space and the excitement at the prospect of life—can be something unifying. The hope that maybe someone else is looking up at different constellations asking the same question we are: are we alone? The hope that the answer to this question will be no.
#I just think it's cool#space#space exploration#space also isn't just the future#it's the past present and future imo#but I'm wrapping the post up here lol#as always ty for the ask sky <3#stella answers#sky cdreambur#astronomy

update on bunduki: i've been researching and i've been poking at an ewokese pronunciation scheme bc i need to have one in order to know how the words woulda acclimatized upon being loaned. tho honestly first i should figure out what words i even need to loan. cuz the core vocab is gonna be finnish words derived from proto-uralic/proto-finno-ugric. maybe some archaic/dialectal ones. pii for tooth my beloved. peni for dog my beloved. emo/emä for mom my beloved. and then some 1500s swedish loans cuz, see, förräderi is literally swedish. gonna be fun to just make the whole thing weird.
also i guess the writing system is gonna have traits from aurebesh (but an abudiga) since the followers of palawa were from the core (i guess ultimately all humans are from the core, since coruscant is supposed to be the og human homeworld? but the palawans are traceably so)
also ironic that despite very heavily basing everything on finnish i'm already putting in more effort than most canon swars creators. lol.
random but nobody putting in sh or th into palawan/bunduki words/characters' names my beloved. i mean. even if i'm gonna add ð & θ back in i still like that they didn't just do All The Englishy Things yanno? chaq-quaj and the 'ee's are the most egregious things. but i solved the 'ee's anyway (/ie̞/). i could totally use qu for ku, btw. (it was used in 1500s) i could also totally use q for a word-final glottal stop like võro—finnish has the glottal stop too, just unwritten, bc proto-finnic, the reconstructed common ancestor of finnish and võro, seems to have had certain word-final consonants that disappeared in finnish. the k has mostly disappeared in all finnic languages iirc, the -h yet shows up in the karelian language, and in western finnish dialects it has changed place. (karelian language veneh vs western finnish venhe. eastern finnish vene became the finnish standard for 'boat') i could also say that the qu&q are historical—they could very well have survived in a name. we'll seeeeee
also hella might call humans something derived from zhell just cuz. sel'i? sel'inen? (hehe like ihminen, get it?) finnish doesn't quite like consonant clusters in the beginning of words outside of stadin slangi or rather recent loans, so c (ts/θ) seems unlikely. ETA: probably actually hel'i, not 100% on the diminutive

Subterfuge: Event info (Part 1)
"Ỉ'll mậkệ hịm PẪỸ FỘR THỈS-!!"
The people in our lives shape us in ways we rarely stop to consider. In Helena's case- The important distinction is who found her during the attack on Tall Oaks.
Leon lead her down a path of focused anger against the people who caused the attack, one where she wasn't left alone to grieve the loss of her sister and the loss of her humanity. One where she was able to focus that mutation in her blood to better herself and put it to use for the greater good.
On the other side, however, Carla had gotten to her first. Fostered that infection and let her anger and desire for vengeance run wild.
She's now fully embraced her role as J'avo, and is taking advantage of the abilities C-virus has granted her. Derek and the stability he'd so carefully crafted is their ultimate target, but she'll strike down anyone her queen deems a threat.
As part of this, her strength and speed grow to inhuman levels. She still keeps her humanoid form, albeit with a cluster of eyes now creeping along her face. She's far more violent and angry, and is extremely protective over Carla specifically. Lashing out at society as a whole.
Everyone's an enemy, and a potential ally at the same time. She's extremely infectious, and will try to infect you and run away before resorting to killing you, and she will view it as an act of mercy.
Don't get bit.

Majestic First Images from Rubin Observatory Show Universe in More Detail Than Ever Before
Astronomy fans can zoom in practically forever into the stunning first images from the Vera C. Rubin Observato
By Meghan Bartels edited by Lee Billings

A small section of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s total view of the Virgo Cluster shows two prominent spiral galaxies (lower right), three merging galaxies (upper right), several groups of distant galaxies, many stars in the Milky Way galaxy, and more. NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory
Welcome to a mind-blowing new era of astronomy. The long-awaited Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a cutting-edge new telescope perched atop a mountain in Chile, released its first images of the universe on June 23—and its views are just as jaw-dropping as scientists hoped.
The new images come from only 10 hours of observations—an eyeblink compared with the telescope’s first real work, the groundbreaking, 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project. On display are billowing gas clouds that are thousands of light-years away from our solar system and millions of sparkling galaxies—all emblematic of the cosmic riches that the observatory will ultimately reveal.
“You can see here a universe teeming with stars and galaxies,” said Željko Ivezić, an astronomer at the University of Washington and director of the Rubin Observatory, during a live event held by the observatory. “The seemingly empty, black pockets of space between stars in the night sky when you look at it with unaided eyes, are transformed here into these glittering tapestries.”
The Rubin Observatory released several videos to highlight the strengths of the new telescope, which captures images that are too enormous to meaningfully grasp with our perception, Ivezić explained. Each of them would require 400 high-definition televisions, a space the size of a basketball court, to display at full detail.
Among the sights that Rubin captured are individual detail images that show portions of the Virgo Cluster, a massive clump of galaxies located in the constellation of the same name (at top and below).

And the appeal of these images isn’t just aesthetic. “When I look at the images, I often don’t pay attention to the beautiful nearby galaxies; I look at the little fuzzballs,” said Aaron Roodman, a physicist at Stanford University and program lead for the Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera, during the live event. “Many of those galaxies are five, perhaps even 10 billion light-years away and have up to 100 billion stars in them. And those are the galaxies that we use the most if we want to study the expansion of the universe and dark energy.” Understanding dark energy—the mysterious force that propels the accelerating expansion of the universe—and the equally enigmatic dark matter, which shapes the cosmos but can’t be directly detected by scientists, represents one of the four key science pillars of the Rubin Observatory. The others include cataloging the solar system, mapping the Milky Way and exploring so-called transient phenomena that change over time.

In a small section of the Rubin Observatory’s total view of the Virgo Cluster, bright stars in the Milky Way galaxy shine in the foreground, and many distant galaxies are in the background. NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
The wealth of these initial views is not a matter of good luck—it’s a testament to the power of the Rubin Observatory to see the previously undetectable. “In a lot of ways, it almost doesn’t matter where we look,” Roodman said during a preview press conference held on June 9. “We could have looked anywhere and gotten fantastic images.”
In the end, the team decided to share several mosaics of images from the observatory that highlight its extremely wide field of view, which can capture multiple alluring targets in a single snapshot.
“I think the thing we hope everybody sees, also, is the promise and opportunity to find the new stuff that is just waiting for us,” said Steven Ritz, an astronomer at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a project scientist for the Rubin Observatory, during the reveal event.

This image combines 678 separate images taken by the Rubin Observatory in just more than seven hours of observing time. Combining many images in this way clearly reveals otherwise faint or invisible details, such as the clouds of gas and dust that comprise the Trifid Nebula (top right) and the Lagoon Nebula, which are several thousands of light-years away from Earth. NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory
The view above of the Triffid Nebula (top right) and Lagoon Nebula includes data from 678 individual images captured by the Rubin Observatory. Scientists stack and combine images in this way to see farther and fainter into the universe. The Triffid Nebula, also known as M20, and the Lagoon Nebula, also known as M8, are star-forming regions both located several thousand light-years away from Earth in the constellation Sagittarius. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTuq-vBsDJE
The Rubin Observatory also shared a new video depicting the 2,104 asteroids the telescope has already discovered in just 10 hours of observations. The observatory expects to detect some five million asteroids that are currently unknown to scientists—compared with just one million known to date. Seven of the new asteroids are so-called near-Earth objects, although none pose a threat to our planet.
These first glimpses from Rubin showcase the observatory’s unprecedented discovery power. The telescope will survey the entire southern sky about once every three days, creating movies of the cosmos in full color and jaw-dropping detail.

A region of the sky that includes the galaxy Messier 49 and a colorful variety of other galaxies and Milky Way stars. NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory revealed a large number of dim objects between the brighter ones. Many of the objects have never before been seen. The image is about 1.6 times the area that NSF-DOE Rubin captures each time it takes an image. NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
“We’ve been working on this for so many years now,” says Yusra AlSayyad, an astronomer at Princeton University and the Rubin Observatory’s deputy associate director for data management. “I can’t believe this moment has finally come.”

My Balcony Stays Lush in Midsummer Heat: A Faux Plant Transformation
My sunroom became a “no-go zone” this summer. Not because it wasn’t lovely, but because my enthusiasm for gardening met its match in the relentless 40°C (104°F) heat. My mint wilted into tea leaves, succulents turned into jerky, and even the supposedly “unkillable” cactus started to soften... Staring at the empty, baking corners, my summer mood evaporated too.
Then I met them – those eternally perky “green companions”.
I decided to give my sunroom a “zero-maintenance” makeover! No more battling the sun, no more guilt over forgotten watering. I carefully selected a few high-quality faux plant pots:
A gracefully sprawling faux Fiddle Leaf Fig: Placed in the sunniest corner, its large leaves stretch out boldly, instantly establishing a lush foundation. No matter how intense the sun, its “leaf tips” remain proudly upright.
Several dense clusters of faux Pothos: Cascading from shelves, their emerald vines flow naturally, creating a waterfall of coolness. No fear of sun scorch or withering – this vibrancy is permanent.
A delicate faux Succulent Arrangement: Nestled on a small side table, plump “leaves” in various shapes add a touch of cute, round charm, solving my inability to keep real succulents alive. Dust? A gentle puff takes care of it!
The result? Absolutely stunning!
Survived (Thrived!) the Entire Heatwave: The fiercest sun, the busiest schedule – they remain unscathed, confidently and consistently green. Thrive under 40°C? Check!
Uncannily Realistic Beauty: Friends visiting lean in and exclaim, “Wait, these aren’t real?!” Fine veining, natural color gradients – this greenery is incredibly authentic. Looks so real, even up close!
Zero-Maintenance Serenity: No worries about watering, fertilizing, or pests. Coming home after work or on a weekend morning, opening the sunroom door to walls of vibrant green instantly soothes the soul. Instant mood booster, zero upkeep!
This Summer Refresh event is the perfect time to infuse your space with “everlasting greenery”! Whether you have a sunroom that defies plant life like mine, or simply want to add a touch of never-fading vitality to your living room, study, or entryway, these highly realistic, premium faux planters are the ultimate solution for brightening your space and elevating the vibe.
Say goodbye to wilted-leaf anxiety and embrace greenery that’s open 365 days a year! Let faux plants effortlessly create a cool, vibrant, and stylish summer oasis. I’m loving my transformed, worry-free space. Are you ready for yours?
