Prompt 18 - Date
@jegulus-microfic June 18, Word count 585
Previous part First part
“Monty, I need you to either adopt me or marry me because if those two idiots break up I won’t survive not having this cake in my life,” Sirius gushed dramatically, while Regulus groaned and tried to disappear into his chair. James pulled him back up while the others laughed loudly at Sirius’s words.
“Son!” Monty cheered, throwing his arms wide for Sirius.
“Father!” Sirius bellowed as he crashed into Monty’s arms.
“Brother!” James jumped up and joined the hug.
Regulus slid down again.
“You know,” Remus said to him from the opposite side of the table, mischief dancing in his eyes. “If Sirius is now adopted by Effie and Monty, that means he’s James’s brother, and you’re Sirius’s brother, which means you are officially dating your new brother,” Regulus’s face twisted into a grimace as Remus snickered over the table.
“Remus Lupin, you are a doctor, behave yourself,” Effie scolded him. “Regulus darling, will you help me make the coffee?” She didn’t wait for an answer, grabbing Regulus’s and dragging him next door.
“Are you alright, darling?” She asked kindly, busying herself with the kettle and finding enough mugs for everybody.
“Yes, Sirius is just loud,” He lied swiftly. Effie raised a knowing eyebrow.
“Whatever you say dear,” Effie smiled at him as she handed him the towering tray.
“Yes, Monty!” Sirius said loudly, nearly making Regulus drop the tray, “Reggie, Reggie guess what! Monty and I have a date!” Regulus ignored him and put the tray down. James came to his side and pulled him in close.
“Dad’s going to show him how to bake the cake, that’s all,” He reassured Regulus.
“Sirius, put my husband down and come have some coffee,” Effie ordered as everyone took their seats again.
Regulus was relieved when the time came to go home. He accepted the warm hugs from Effie and Monty without fuss and promised to come back soon. Sirius ran back for one more hug and Regulus used that as his distraction and booted Remus out of the back of the car.
“What the?!” Sirius said, surprised when he opened the back door and found James staring back at him.
“Get in the front, loser. It’s our turn in the back.” Regulus glowered at his brother. Sirius slammed the door shut and climbed into the front.
Regulus leaned over and rested his head on James’s shoulder, letting out a quiet sigh. He couldn’t wait to get into bed. Maybe he’d have a nice hot bath first, maybe with a hot chocolate, maybe with a naked James.
Sirius pulled up outside the house and froze.
“Regulus, stay in the car,” He said evenly. Regulus tensed up.
“Why? What’s wrong?” His voice shook. Sirius was only like this when it was bad.
“Just stay, okay. James keep him in here.” Sirius got out of the car and Remus followed him.
“He doesn’t want you here! Leave him alone! If I have to call the police again on you I will!” Sirius’s angry voice travelled into the car.
“Jealous Sirius that for once you’re not the centre of attention? That I prefer Regulus over you?” Barty. Barty was there. Regulus burst out of the car and ran towards the house. There, standing under the stoop, leaning against the door, was Barty. “Hello, lover,” Barty lowered his voice into a growl. Regulus felt a chill run through his veins as he looked into Barty's eyes. This couldn't be good.

anyone else thinking about effie spending 24 years watching haymitch completely fall apart. effie, who met haymitch by accident, who knows exactly what kind of person he is, who sees him every year on his birthday for 24 years and each year he’s drunker, each year he’s angrier, each year he’s faster to give up. and then they get katniss and peeta. peeta, who is kind and open and understanding, who refuses to give up on haymitch. and katniss, who is so much like haymitch at 16 that it hurts. and over the few days they’re together, effie watches haymitch come back to life. watches him try. watches him have hope. and then they get to keep not one but both of those kids. they get to come home. and then, less then a year later, effie pulls haymitch’s name at the reaping.

the whole "geese mating for life" thing is funny to me (not funny, deeply tragic, but you get it) because yes, we know that this is false and suzanne collins decided to put it anyway. which is a VERY good parallel to the way we tend to hierarchize relationships and think that there is only one love for life. it's not true, we are capable of loving in equal amounts and in different ways (even in romantic relationships) several people. but this idea of a hierarchy of relationships is so intrinsic in our heads that we tend to think it's true, even if it's not (just like geese mating for life). and this is a broken man, who was ripped away from the first girl he loved before he could even experience all that love with her and never really began to heal (probably not until the end of mockinjay). it's OBVIOUS - and consistent - that he thinks this way.
and by the way, giving my contributions to the discussion as a hayffie shipper for years now, because i can't help it: even before sotr, the love that haymitch felt for lenore dove, along with the social complexity and political debates that can be raised by a relationship between haymitch and effie, is precisely what adds layers and development capacity and attracts me to them. so no, nothing about my ship was destroyed by this book and yes, i'm quite the opposite of frustrated by his love for lenore. both of my two favorite characters (individually) and their relationship (as coworkers, friends or, non-canonically, lovers) were profoundly deepened by it.

the importance of Effie and Haymitch.
i love love LOVE that the only reason Effie ever got involved in the games was to help her little sister out. more important than that is i love who Effie is for Haymitch.
first we see her supporting him until the last minute as he goes into the games and for the victor celebration in the capital. for Haymitch to have someone who is looking out for him and just him. not Mags or Wiress or Beetee who have ulterior motives for his success. someone just about him.
the moment when Effie shares she knew the type of person Haymitch was when he stopped to pick up her things when her make up bag got knocked over. She was the first one to see him outside of just being a rascal, or a tribute, or from district 12.
most importantly that she becomes the constant in his life after the games. he pushes everyone else away, but every year they get forced together again for a short time while they take 2 new kids to the slaughter.
Effie becomes the only person in Haymitch’s life to TRULY know him. she knows the type of person he is, always has. she also sees the devistation the aftermath of the games has caused him. she becomes the only one to truly grasp how much the games have destroyed him, even though he won. even though he won he will never go back to being the same person he was, even if that person still exists deep inside him.

…you think Katniss even knows Effie’s full first name?
(under the assumption it’s a nickname because it doesn’t fit with the Capitol style of naming and no way anyone would name one child ‘Effie’ and another ‘Proserpina’)

So, I finally reached chapter 12 (currently in c.16) where Peeta and the others are rescued, and I can't stop thinking about @ngjasper theory.
To summarize what they exposed in their previous post https://www.tumblr.com/ngjasper/783739029054177280/pov-effie-trinket-fans-from-the-time-of-the-og?source=share
"They didn’t fully understand what had happened to Effie—not in terms of her location, but her condition. Unlike Peeta, with the tracker jacker venom, or Johanna, white the drowning and electrocution torture. It’s possible that they did manage to rescue her, but she was in such a fragile mental or physical state—perhaps even close to death—that Haymitch and Plutarch chose to remain vague about her situation. Their silence could have been a way to protect Effie's dignity and/or shield Katniss from even more emotional pain."
Ngjasper take this quote to explain this theory: "We’ve no idea what happened to Effie Trinket."
But I would like to add a few more to support this theory because I'm totally taking this theory as (head)canon:
“We got them all out. Except Enobaria." -Boggs, c.12.
They knew Effie was a hostage because "Plutarch and Haymitch had a hard time keeping her alive" so Boggs wouldn't say they got everyone if Effie wasn't with the rest. Besides the nuance and contradictions of what people say through Katniss pov is kind of weird, why would Plutarch say they don't know where Effie is if they had assets that were helping to at least stop some high rank or Snow himself to order her execution, so he saying "we don't know what happened to Effie" wasn't in regards of her location but rather her state.
"My mother, who’s been assisting in a complicated surgery, has still not been informed of Peeta’s assault." -Katniss, c.13.
This quote also gives me something to think, yes, I know D13 is a big city, so medical complications are common in, well, a hospital, but if we get the context of D13 recieving the hostages and the hospital turning chaotic because of their arrival. And taken the fact that as far as we know Johanna, nor Annie or Peeta had to go through surgery when they get them back, well, I think I it could be Effie.
So Effie returned witht the others, but she was in such a bad state Plutarch and Haymitch didn't say a word to Katniss to keep her from more pain.
That's it, thanks for comming to my rambles

Two Tickets Far From Here
maniac (february 9) @black-brothers-microfic — regulus & sirius black microfic — mentions of child abuse, side effects of the cruciatus curse, hurt/confort, regulus's pov  — word count: 770
"Two tickets to..." Sirius paused, glancing nervously at the route chart before looking at the half-asleep girl behind the glass. "Actually, I have no idea. We need to get to Godric's Hollow—what train should we take?"
“Is that in the West Country?” the girl asked, barely stifling a yawn.
“I... guess so?”
Regulus stood in stunned silence, watching his brother make a fool of himself without an ounce of shame. Even worse, he was starting to doubt his own sanity.
Sirius was a total maniac—Regulus had known that for a long time. But maybe he had underestimated the reach of his own bloodline, because surely, he had to be losing his mind too. How else could he explain the fact that they had just sprinted through London in the dead of night, covered in half-healed wounds, with nothing but the clothes they were wearing, heading toward a destination they didn’t even know how to reach?
It was a well-known fact that prolonged exposure to the Cruciatus Curse could cause lasting damage to the mind. So, yes, that had to be it. Brain damage. Because there was absolutely no way Regulus Black would ever willingly engage in something this reckless, foolish, and downright suicidal.
"Look, Reggie." Sirius limped toward him, holding up two tickets between his fingers. He was clearly in pain, his exhaustion evident in the way he moved. "She said there's a train leaving in a few minutes that we can take..."
"And then what?"
"Then we board another train to—"
“No.” Regulus cut him off. “I mean... the potions will stop working in less than an hour. We won’t even be able to move.” It was only a matter of time before the pain overtook them again. The fact that Regulus had even managed to scrounge up a few potions back at Grimmauld Place was a miracle—just enough to momentarily dull the pain, poorly patch up Sirius’s broken body, and, against all odds, get them out of there alive. “Neither of us will be in any condition to drag the other one along.”
"James will come pick us up," Sirius assured him, lowering himself onto the bench beside his younger brother.
“But how will he know where to find us?” Regulus asked, confused. Potter had no idea where they were. If he did, he would’ve already been here, dragging Sirius off to safety.
With a mischievous grin, Sirius pulled a small mirror from his pocket and handed it to Regulus. “We’ll tell him,” he said simply. “As soon as he wakes up, we’ll use this to let him know where we are, and he’ll come get us.”
Regulus stared at his own dumbfounded expression reflected in the mirror. His brother had lost his last remaining brain cell. They were about to board a train to Merlin-knows-where, half their bones still broken, unable to use magic without alerting their parents to their location, and this—this—was his brother’s grand plan?
Sirius burst out laughing. It was obvious he was in pain, but not enough to stop him from being entertained by whatever expression was on Regulus’s face.
Regulus felt a cold sweat break out across his skin. Doubt clawed at the edges of his mind. Maybe this had been a mistake. “Maybe we shouldn’t have—”
Sirius’s laughter died in an instant. He grabbed Regulus by the shoulders and turned him to face him. The sudden movement sent sharp pain tearing through both their bodies, but neither of them flinched.
“Don’t,” Sirius said, voice deadly serious. “Don’t say it. Don’t even think it.”
For a second, Regulus swore he was looking at a reflection of himself. His throat tightened. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, overwhelmed by the terror, the uncertainty, the adrenaline still surging through his veins.
“We did what we had to do,” Sirius continued. “If we’d stayed, one of us would’ve bled out on the carpet sooner or later. And you know it.”
Regulus swallowed hard. Sirius’s fingers brushed gently against his cheek, a silent reassurance. They both knew they were on the verge of breaking down. They had survived their home once again, but they weren’t far enough. Not yet. Not safe.
“We’ll figure this out together, Reggie,” Sirius whispered. “I promise.”
And somehow, despite the fear, despite the doubt, Regulus believed him.
Sirius exhaled heavily and stood, heading toward the platform. “C'mon, the train’s already here.”
Regulus didn’t move. “Sirius?”
“What, baby brother?” Sirius called back.
“That train is going in the opposite direction.”
Sirius paused, then shrugged. “Fuck it. That sounds like a Prongs problem. We just need a private car to sleep in.”

this is an honest ask because no matter how many times i go back to sotr, I can’t find it, but i keep hearing people say it so there must be something i’m missing:
why do people say effie didn’t want to be a part of the games in the first place?
I’ve always taken her introductory paragraph on “duty” and saying it was a “privilege” to dress them as indicative she felt honored to participate in the games. I know she’s hesitant to be credited with stylist work, but that just read to me as fear of Magno retaliating by “making a scene” as he had during the interviews, not that she doesn’t want her name tied to the Games:
“I’m going to tell everyone you dressed me.”
“Please, don’t.” She sighs. “He’ll only make a scene, and it’s hard enough being a Trinket.” She arranges my flint striker over my shirt.
Is there a quote or something I’m missing?

Chronological Order: (Tbosas -> Sotr -> Original Trilogy) Publication Order: (Original Trilogy -> Tbosas -> Sotr)
I ask because I've seen a lot of people saying that reading the books for the first time in Chronological order ruins the experience. I find this interesting because I just finished reading them for the first time in Chronological order and I feel it heightened my experience.

forgive me if i'm wrong as i'm not an expert in elizabethan court hairstyles and i don't know how the trends changed over the era (or how it differed in the french court) however. as far as i'm aware, having long, flowing hair that was uncovered was a hairstyle mainly for unmarried women that showed their virgin status. once married, women would wear their hair up or covered. so.,, sophie bone wearing her hair long and loose without much of a covering in front of her co-conspirators is both hilarious and a bit sad to me. imagine your elizabethan wife going around court dressed like an unmarried woman when you've been married for years and betrothed since you were teens. it's like she's saying "i Do Not recognise myself as married. this man does not fuck me."

Shameless self-promo + little story:
This fic was inspired by a weird laughing fit I had over a year ago when my husband was telling me how to do his laundry - we do our loads separately because he's really finicky abt it and I'm kinda lazy/succinct with it.
Sometimes, tho, our loads mix & he ends up washing some of my shirts. I mainly notice because he'll leave them hanging on my bedroom's door, but sometimes he'll set them in my closet and I won't notice until I put the shirts on because the scent of detergent when he does the laundry the way he likes is very noticeable.
In contrast, my clothes will smell clean but there's not that lingering detergent scent. More like just the sun after they've been hanging on the clothesline for a day or two.
Just thought it was interesting. Might write a little ficlet abt little things like this for #nanago in the future.
PS: My fics in AO3 are locked following the scraper issues. If you need/want an invite to create an account, send me a message and I'll be happy to help.
