Surrounded by a large suspended planter in dialogue with the garden, Floreira House reflects nature in a countryside condominium. Privacy, minimalism, and the demand for low maintenance were the driving forces behind the creation of a residence designed for gatherings of friends and family in a condominium in the town of Porto Feliz, in the countryside of São Paulo. To bring these characteristics to life, Matheus Farah e Manoel Maia Arquitetura designed a large garden at the rear of the 3,182 sqm lot, toward which all other areas are oriented, serving as the heart of the project. On the upper floor, elongated metal planters encircle the entire external area, softening the transition between materials and creating a dialogue with the garden. The prominent presence of this element justifies the name Floreira House (House of Planters). [caption id="attachment_615481" align="aligncenter" width="533"] © Nelson Kon[/caption] In addition to shrubs and trees, the ground-level garden houses a generously sized pool integrated with the social areas, including the dining room, living room, and office. Large glass panels allow for complete openness to the exterior, creating a spacious veranda characterized by visual permeability and harmony between spaces. To protect the functional areas, transparency gives way to concrete walls that enclose the kitchen and laundry room, as well as the gym, sauna, and changing room, which support the pool area. The first floor provides access to the private quarters, consisting of six suites. Five of them, positioned laterally, receive sunlight filtered through dark gray aluminum brise-soleils and offer views that engage with the sides of the lot. The master suite, located at the end of the floor, faces the garden. It features a cozy balcony that serves as a vantage point to contemplate both the pool and the expansive horizon where the property is situated. The interior design is composed of neutral tones and sober, minimalist finishes, with furniture that gives prominence to pieces by renowned Brazilian designers such as Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues, Jader Almeida, and Carlos Motta. [caption id="attachment_615486" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Plan[/caption] Sustainability and Efficiency in Dry Construction. The owners’ desire for an agile project with uncomplicated execution led to the choice of industrialized and custom-made prefabricated materials, from structural elements to finishes, ensuring minimal waste generation. For the building's exterior, concrete panels with a wood mold were used, with tonal variations to visually distinguish the concrete volumes that characterize the ground and upper floors. Beyond the construction, the project’s sustainability is reflected in the details, such as the inclusion of an automated irrigation system for the garden and the preparation of infrastructure for the installation of photovoltaic panels. Lighting control in the social areas and the master suite is also personalized through light settings, allowing the spaces to be adapted for any occasion. Dan 35 I Camera
I need to start this post back in time. I first started collecting cameras and other photo items in the late 1970s or early 1980s. I can remember purchasing one of McKeown's Camera Price Guides and spending hours combing through each camera manufacturer, looking at the cameras they had made in the past. There were so many odd and unusual like very rare original Leica; the very first bullet-shaped brass Voigtlander camera, the Compass camera or Photosphere that I could only dream of owning, and many were so far from the price budget that I knew there were only a pipedream.
Many large companies, like Eastman Kodak, Polaroid, and Zeiss, made hundreds of different model cameras, which were abundant. Then, there were the smaller camera companies that produced unique cameras, like Univex, which was the first camera I owned. It was a Uniflex that was given to me by my uncle Bud, who, to this day, along with my brother Tim, I owe my love of photography.
Then, I can remember thumbing through the price guide and finding a tiny company that produced a camera near and dear to me, the Dan camera. I immediately thought I needed to find one of these to put into my collection. My initial search was hopeless, as many of the local flea markets and antique stores I'd frequent only had the very common Kodak, Polaroid, Zeiss, and other companies like Herbert George and other American brands.
Online Auctions:
It would help to remember that this was before eBay, which didn't exist before the mid-1990s. I was an early adopter of buying and selling on eBay in 1997. At that time, there were no photos, and it was mainly just a buy/sell board with an auction element so you could post a camera or item for sale, but you only had the description from the seller to go by. When I first joined eBay, there was no name to have but a number. My original number was 1034; you had to do everything through DOS.
EBay made a massive difference as it gained popularity. It changed how people bought and sold items. Adding photos gave the buyer more confidence in their purchase, and rarer items could hit higher pricing due to the inability to find them.
For many years, the Dan Camera was very elusive, and since the camera was from a smaller company, the scarcity and pricing made the purchase of it next to impossible up until a couple of years ago when I was looking through a different online auction website, and I found a grouping of cameras which piqued my interest. As I zoomed in to look at this lot, there was a portion of a lens I could see.   I could barely read "Dan" on the ring around the lens as I looked closer. Here was my chance to finally own the elusive Dan 35 camera.
The auction happened, and there was minimal interest in this group of cameras as many of them were very common items. However, these are the groups that I really enjoy because tucked away in the corner "could" have a gem hidden, and in this case, there was. I won the camera lot, got the items shipped to me, and there it was as I unwrapped it: the Dan 35 camera. To my amazement, it was the first model.
History:
The Dan 35 is a simple Bolta film camera made in Japan after WWII. Bolta film was invented by Johann Bolten, who founded Bolta-Werks in Nuremberg, Germany, in 1936. The film was to go into his smaller, more compact cameras named the Boltavit. Bolta Werk later produced the Photovit line of cameras from 1936 to the 1950s. Bolta film was incorporated into many different cameras during this period and was a nonperforated 35mm film with a paper backing loaded into special cassettes. Later models of film were spooled similar to films like 828 and 127.
The Dan 35 camera was made by Hagimoto Danji. He built a small plant in Suwa to manufacture the Dan 35 camera, which he sold in his camera shop in Ginza after WWII in 1945. After the moderate success of the Dan 35, there were three different distributors for the camera between 1945 and 1950, when the camera company went bankrupt. The logo on the camera coincides with the company's name, which is H for Hagimoto above Dan for Danji on the far right of the camera.
Here's where it gets a bit fuzzy. Yamato Koki Seisakusho was a camera company that started in Tokyo in 1943. It made shutters for Japanese camera companies like Gelto and Leotax. The first cameras produced by Yamato were the Minon 35, Minon Six, and Pax 35.
Yamato, known to produce the Minon 35, a copy of the Dan 35 III and later the Pax 35, is a camera that is a copy of the Super Dan 35. Some sources say Yamato made the Dan 35 and Dan 35 II, but others say they took over producing the Dan 35 after Hagimoto went bankrupt in 1950. Yamato produced the Pax line in the 1960s.
My Camera:
The Dan 35 is a very simple camera with a torpedo-shaped viewfinder on top. It measures 3.25" wide by 2.25" tall from the base to the top of the finder and is 2" deep from the front of the lens to the back of the camera. The camera weighs a whopping 5.2oz and is considered a miniature camera. The Dan 35 has a Dan Anastigmat 40mm f4.5 lens with a Silver-B shutter.
Around the lens is the focus ring, a helicoid focus measuring from 1 meter to infinity. Just behind the aperture numbers on the lens is a knurled ring that sets the aperture. In front of the aperture numbers is another knurled ring that sets the shutter speeds on the camera. There are only shutter speeds, 1/25, 1/50, and 1/100 sec, along with B. On the left of the knurled ring is a cocking lever to cock the shutter, and the shutter release is on the right side to expose the film.
To load the film, on the top of the camera is a locking lever with "L" for lock and "O" for open. Switch the lever to "O," and the top comes off to load the film. The base comes off to load in later models like the Dan 35 Model II. My camera has no spools to load the film, and the shutter doesn't work. On the back of the camera is a red window with an open/close lever to see the numbers on the paper backing of the film so you know where to stop for your next exposure. Also, Dan 35 is embossed on the back of the camera.
Conclusion:
Unfortunately, I don't have film, and the camera's shutter doesn't work, so I couldn't take photos with this camera to share.
I mainly have this camera for a couple of reasons. One is its rarity; the more important reason is that it has the same name as me, so I get a kick out of that. I have another miniature camera set aside for next week's blog post, which I also find fascinating.
Thank you for taking a few minutes to review my blog post about the cameras in my collection. Please be safe until next week.

Sandy Lawson went to work on his last day as the Organizational Enforcement Security Director in the Citadel the same as any other day. He made a hot herbal tea at home with boiled dawnbreaker eggs, each one tiny and crunchy with a little pop as he ate them on toast, and the day's briefs loaded in his leather-bound AbysSec case. It used a continuously variable encryption based on the local tidal forces to determine when the case synced for a new random number, along with a patented blood pattern lock.
The light gray and pink pinstripe four piece suit he wore daily was layered with basic uniflex armor because it wouldn't due to get stabbed or shot with a rocket launcher on the way to work. He kept his wavy gunmetal hair short and swept, his body modestly fit, and his shoes polished. He read business and infosec news on his com during his monorail trip to the office, didn't gossip, and had little regard for headline news or the reporting thereof.
It wasn't unusual for his secrep, Matt Dowers, to meet him at the Enforcement branch entryway. The fretful little man and his constantly mismanaged blonde coiffure, his crooked tie and the way his shirt was always threatening to come untucked, it all made Lawson's blood pressure creep. Dowers was without compare as far as organizing data, which was the only reason Lawson allowed him to rise to his present position with Spellbinder Security Limited. Dowers said, "The board rep wants you in conference room 1003 right away. Gale and Witherton are already waiting."
This was the first indication to Lawson that it was going to be his last day in the Citadel.
● ● ● ● ●
"You have thirty seconds to explain why I don't dial you out to central." The extraordinarily attractive man with ice blue eyes managed to inflect his perfect diction with a snarl.
Laika reached down off screen and came up holding a brick of diamond. "Just to hear me out," she said. "You have to pick it up in person. Sorry, I don't think Panay wants us back."
Chester's lips collected themselves from the snarl into a manageable twitch. "Fine. Five minutes. I'm busy."
"Yeah. Uh," Laika felt embarrassed about stammering. "How- how's Lukasz?"
"Resting," Chester said. "I'm seeing to his health. He might walk again. What do you want."
"Uh, okay. Well, I need help."
"Obviously."
"Right, er, but you know - where I'm from. The United Eastquad Block on Nevamil. With the conformity thing. They don't, uh, don't want werewolves and shit."
Chester almost showed a tiny bit of guilt, Laika thought. It was hard to tell from the projection. "We... I know. They're barbaric."
"Wuh-well, you also worked with-"
"We do what we need to for safety. Life is ugly. Three minutes." He went back to looking angry.
"I want to, uh, mess them up. And you can help a lot, and we'll pay you a lot. Like, you could be a real haven kinda. You know? Not just... for like. People who can pay on their own."
"Huh." She watched the muscles at the corner of his jaw relax, lines of worry and sadness were new on his face. As the anger slipped away, what remained was exhaustion. His whole body drooped inches with the weight of it. "A haven, and all I do is... what?"
Sy stepped up next to Laika. "Hey Chet."
"It's Chester," sighed the other werewolf.
"Right. Well, we have a few ideas about it, but the main thing we need is really easy. All we want you to do is send them money. A lot of money."
○ ○ ○ ○ ○
Secretaries and a couple permit clerks made their way onto the elevator, running late and coughing noisily, as Lawson and Dowers stepped into the wood paneled 10th floor hallways, fast walking to the group of offices SBS rented on site. Witherton and Gale stood up, flanking Crystal Dinagde, board rep and famous SBS hatchetman - hatchetperson really. Lawson had no idea their age. They'd been on the board longer than his career, seemingly aged sideways instead of up, and the long, tight braids of their hair remained an impenatrable black. He'd thought himself used to her presence, but standing on the other side of the table as her golden brown eyes bored into him tested his nerves.
They did not pass, and he tried to find a clue in the expressions of Gale or Witherton, but neither man would meet his eyes. "This is... to what do I owe the... meeting?" He set his case on the table, to the side of a thin manilla folder.
"Mister Lawson," Dinagde said, clipping the "T." Certainly you of all people are particularly familiar with our standard audits and flagging procedures for employees."
"Quite... quite so, M'x Dinagde," his own hesitation stung. Lawson had long held only idiots and the guilty stuttered. "I designed some of them, after all."
Dinagde pushed the folder across the glossy black conference table. "That being the case, it strikes me as audacious beyond credulity that you would have," they paused, doing mental calculations while Lawson opened the folder, "you would have something on the order of a flat one million in standardized credit pattern transferred directly to your personal account, and expect it to go unnoticed."
Lawson's mouth opened and closed, words failed to materialize in response and his guts dropped to any icy well as he stared at thermal prints of his own bank records. He was able to produce the letter "I" several times, but little else.
"Please don't strain yourself. In my opinion this is a transparent stab at your legitimacy."
Lawson nodded.
"However, an investigation must be conducted, it must be thorough, and it must be unquestionable. There may be consequences beyond my control." They made a gesture, and Gale set his phone down. A news article enlarged into the table screen. "WHO HOLDS SPELLBINDER'S LEASH" was the headline. It had today's date.
His eyes followed the article mechanically as Dinagde continued, "Unfortunately this was already leaked. You may already be familiar with Oxswain House, a small but influential group which is at severe odds with conformity regulations and enforcement policy. For the moment, you are relieved of your access and security clearance, and will be placed on paid leave, pending the outcome of our review."
He nodded, blank, barely able to feel his legs and put his hand on his secure file case. "Mister Lawson, I'm afraid that includes your files."
"Ah, of course." He slid the case over to Dinagde. They passed it towards Witherton then stopped and narrowed their eyes. Their long, wide fingers brushed over the surface, stopped, pulled. Faux leather pulled fully away from burnished metal, leaving streaks of cheap glue behind.
"What, exactly, is this?" On the opposite side, disguised by woven silver counter motive wirework, were four very thin plastic bags filled with black powder.

Part 7: The Tower
a story by @rox-and-prose and @cipheramnesia
Dusk turned the Nevamil sky a flat aquamarine, and made visible the red lights blinking atop the Citadel. It was the tallest building in the capital city, Aureodar, even visible from the far off gridded streets of old houses converted into apartments. The last time Laika had seen it was a field trip for school.
The little blue Kirov was somewhere between the mountains and Genghis Khan and the most anonymous hopper port they'd been able to find in Aureodar. She worried about Sy, seemed ages past she'd been this physically far, though it was hardly more than weeks. Wires and talismans crossed over the streets, bikes and busses swooshed wet pavement, and linecars screeched overhead, all wrapped around her and her backpack and familiar unknown faces of the United Eastquad Block.
Ghosts gathered around her, whispering. You keep coming back here little wolf girl, you'll never get away from this place. Little wolf girl, you know you belong here. Freak. Queer. Sissy. Killer. Monster. You thought you were better than us, you never were. Laika let them needle and claw her. They were her ghosts, not the other way round. Every horrible word only built her up. Luna was with her in that way.
Most of the houses on K Street were mods, from early to late first century post-terraform. They were all retrofited from the original single family modules, but they were tough as nails, old construction built to weather thr storms of atmosphere generation. Number 1132 was where she was headed, lights were still on in the third floor windows.
Laika took a last look around on the front door's stoop. The poles for street lights and warden ropes all had at least three CCTV cameras and arrayed parabolic empathy receivers tuned into psychic conflict between morality and legality. She flashed a tight little smile at the familiar old glass eye of the state before pulling a short crowbar out of her bag and cracking the door open.
The third floor smelled of some sharp, fragrant allium along with sweet woody flavors and cooking meat, enough to rouse her stomach. Deep breath, ignore the ghosts, knock. A woman with her black hair in a bob cut, rolled up sleeves on her billowy dress, a little sweaty and confused, almost a quarter meter shorter than Laika. A wave of gaming sounds, net music, and oven warmth joined them both on the landing.
"Hey Tara," Laika said.
The other woman looked closer. "Laika? Oh tides, it is!" She wrapped Laika up in a big soft hug inside thick arms, crushing her stick body. "I thought you, I don't know, I thought you were dead! I mean, there were rumors?"
"Uff! Uh, hey. Sorry to be like, unannounced. Is it okay if I come in?" Laika hesitantly patted Tara's shoulders until the hug relaxed and her feet were back on the floor.
"You just have to, please. I'm sorry, when did you get back, why didn't you call?"
Unlacing her boots and slipping them off, she said, "I just got back today, um. I've been a bit off the net you know." She dipped her hand in the tiny basin by the door and thumbed a drop of water on the polished river stone at the altar. "But I wanted to see how you'd been, I guess. It just, well it's weird. That smells amazing."
She saw a couple kids blasting through uncreatively humanoid aliens, loudly and luridly across the living room screen, followed Tara into the kitchen and dinette area and watched her stir around sizzling veggies and meat in a wide dish. "Thanks," Tara said. "The spawn over there don't always appreciate it, but you know how... well, how kids can be..." Tara frowned awkwardly.
"Yeah, uh. Yeah." Laika rubbed the back of her neck. "So what all have you heard?"
Tara stuttered with a little embarassment. In the distance Laika could very faintly hear sirens, but she knew they weren't for her. The people who would come for her didn't use sirens or advertise their presence.
Half paying attention to Tara, she added, "Well, uh, some is true. But... you knew it was bad at home. Stuff happened. What about you though? Like, two kids? Wow!"
Tara probably was relieved at the change of topic, and Laika was glad to take a minute, but she couldn't focus all the way. She was waiting.
