sometimes ‘family’ is
- an amnesiac guy who used to be a test subject for an examination system
- his totally normal uncle and cousin
- his amnesiac boyfriend who doesn’t know they’re dating (actually, neither of them do)
- another test subject for the examination system
- a system bug who is pregnant with the system’s self-correcting system
- a part of the system with human traits that was abandoned a while back and left in a recycling bin for years until it was freed by the amnesiac boyfriend, and
- the amnesiac boyfriend’s amnesiac friend who doesn’t remember they used to be in the army together (welcome back wen yuan!!)

Have you ever been playing dnd and found yourself wishing you could experience the full immersion of mechanics for brewing potions, charting maps, picking locks, or enchanting items that were more than simply chucking a d20 and hoping for the best?
In addition to an expansive combat system that favors player exploration and expression, Tales from the Aether encourages players to explore more facets of the fantasy and adventuring genre. Some fun examples are the Chef’s Tools and Climbing Tools mechanics.
Chef’s Tools
These tools are used to make delicious and nutritious meals that are far superior to simple rations. In order to make a nutritious meal that last the whole adventuring day, you must use at least 4 lbs of food stuff such as meat, vegetables, or roots per individual you wish to feed.
You gain a number of d6s equal to your Nature or Knowledge score. You only need to roll one dice to make a successful meal but can gamble for additional bonuses. If you roll doubles on anything other than 1s, your meal grants an additional bonus. Any effects granted from the meals lasts until your next long rest.
If you roll anything other than a 1, the meal is a success and grants a temporary increase to Hit Point maximum equal to your Nature or Knowledge score.
If you roll a 1, the meal is just an average meal with no additional benefits.
If you roll multiple 2s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Stamina.
If you roll multiple 3s, the meal grants a +5 to Speed.
If you roll multiple 4s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Awareness and Security checks.
If you roll multiple 5s, the meal grants a +1 Bonus to Diplomacy, Deception, Intimidation, and Performance checks.
If you roll multiple 6s, the meal grants double the increase to Hit Points.
Climbing Tools
Climbing long distances is a dangerous sport and can be nearly impossible without the proper tools. With these tools, a misstep may lead to a minor panic attack, not a fall to one’s death.
You gain a pool of 5 dice (1d4). For every 100 feet you climb, you must use these dice to reach a DC of 10. If you fail to meet this DC, you gain 10 points of Stress but make the distance.
The dice you get to roll is increased depending on your Skill Rank. Novice grants a 1d6, Apprentice a 1d8, Journeyman a 1d10, Expert a 1d12, and Master a 1d20.
If you are climbing with multiple people, you can share your dice to help your companions out. For example, if one member of the group is an Expert and passed the DC with 2 dice, they can share their last 3 dice with members of the group that are less skilled in Agility or Strength.
This is just a taste but there is much more to be found. If such exploration of different mechanics interests you, give a follow to keep up to date with Tales from the Aether’s progress! I may be inviting more people to the discord to take a look at the 250+ page document once its V1.2 is completed ;p

honestly continually taken aback at how squeamish citizens get if you're honest about the practical calculus of immigrating, even the ones who think of themselves as pro-immigration! like why are you suddenly stumping for The Good Immigrant archetype bc i promise the immigration bureau is NOT going to fuck you!!!
#like all my international student and immigrant friends are pretty like yeah these are the things you have to do to get legal status#particularly if you're not in like one of a dozen 'highly skilled' fields#and it's like oh okay so the system incentivizes going to a university here as a smoother pathway to immigration#that gets you points on your eventual application for longer term residency#and yet both the government and other people want you to pretend that that doesn't factor into your decision making at all???#like why is it only okay if i tell you that i came here just for the love of academia and then was like oh haha it's so great i had to stay#and was just serendipitously able to take advantage of this immigration pathway that i didn't even know about that you left open to me!!!!#like why would i maintain that kind of fiction if you're not a child and should know better#like i took a gamble and figured that it would be quicker and more reliable than trying to find a job that would sponsor me#and then i wouldn't be at the mercy of some random employer who could fire me and jeopardize my status at literally any time???#it drives me literally insane how much i'm supposed to pretend that the moon is made of pudding like i'm sorryyyyyyyy#like why are you setting up a system where you can only get through it in certain ways then freaking out at me for taking one of those ways#and it must be said probably the only one of those ways that was actually realistically available to me given my resources and skillset#like it's so weird how many residual hangups people have about what 'right' way to immigrate even if they say they don't#and it must be said generally know fuck all about how immigration and its bureaucracy work in their given country so like half of the shit#they're imagining as what you should do isn't even something that most people slash anyone could do#it drives me nutssssssss okay i'm done#i just was getting a medical test done and the tech was like oh you must love [subject area] and i was like oh yeah haha and i also loved#being able to move here (rookie mistake i should not have even mentioned this but in my defense i was very drowsy)#and she got soooooo weird and terse and was like 'oh! well i just assumed you were one of those people who loves learning'#like yeah that was on me but like you're an adult who knows how tuition and employment work and i literally said i was doing a lit degree..#like MAYBE if i were soo independently wealthy that would be a sufficient reason to work constantly for shit pay and no practical benefits#but c'mon girly........#okay i'm done it just drives me up the wall to have people act like i'm some craven freak#for looking realistically at my options for immigrating and being like hmmm well this one seems the most doable for me i guess#like i have figured out you do just have to be like oh yeah haha to whatever people say and again i would normally remember to do that#but it just makes me feel soooo like we're living in two different realities. esp when i have friends who Get It due to we're all getting#fucked by the immigration bureau constantly#it feels a lot like when you have to talk about your disability with people who've literally never thought about or experienced such a thing#and they'll give you some inane useless boilerplate advice then be affronted if you talk about how you actually (have to) navigate the world

so many thoughts about the latest games. imagine getting so mad about not being picked for basketball that while everyone else is out playing their games you, out of the power of sheer rage and spite, presumably rip open a hole between dimensions and jump in and recruit the rest of your dead/unborn siblings from the pocket dimension who you saw dissolve in front of your very eyes to form your own cooler basketball team and when you send them out onto the court your team's uniform is a fucking neon green cartoon sheet ghost costume.
nighttime knifemare. truly the character of all time (affectionate).

hiya. uh im bored, so im offering myself to join in the girlmath if you wanna do a doublecheck. imo 11/60 sounds bit too low to pass. can give the marking details if you wanna me do the maths. thanks in advance :>
Im about to go to sleep bUT here you go
I have a module that is 100% and it's separated into this:
Logbook 30%
Preceptor evaluation 20%
Lecturer evaluation 10%
Quiz 40% (60 multiple choice questions)
So like I wanted to know how much I need to score in the Quiz in order to pass the whole module, which is like 50%
The only percentages I have are as such:
Logbook: 15% (this is a rough estimate cuz Idk my final grade)
Peceptor Evaluation: 19%
Lecturer Evaluation: 10%
I did the math and apparently I need to only score about 9-11 questions out of 60 questions LMAO I think because the Evalutions already pulled up the scores, and to be fair I was already 40 ish % with the assessments 😂
But like, if let’s say the score is 12/60 wouldn’t it fail the quiz already??? *scratches head* (assuming 30 is to pass, which im pretty sure it is)
Well I don’t aim to just score 12 marks obviously, but i was hilarious to look at the numbers
Feel free to send another ask when u do the math anon!

literally just looking at various potential research labs for grad school and my brain has the audacity to give me the “fucking up the protein purification in front of everyone so badly they all think I’m an idiot” nightmare again
#haven’t had that bad boy since I left my research tech job#to be fair I’m p sure I’m the only person in the labs I’m looking at that has ever even purified a protein#like. of the labs I’m looking at the only wet labs are somewhere that doesn’t have the equipment on site#the others aren’t wet labs at all#but it is funny bc I was talking to a potential PI and she mentioned a problem that I could consider working on and my brain was like. well#this is prob best approached by enzyme activity assays#and I’m p sure this guy can’t be assayed in vivo#so. protein purification for in vitro testing?#but I HATE PURIFICATION.#and also literally if I wanted to do it I’d have to go to the other campus that has the centrifuges and liquid nitrogen!!!!!#which is fucking bizarre to me bc I worked somewhere where those things were standard#the university doesn’t even have an fplc……….#they simply don’t do that shit. which is kinda the point bc I don’t like that shit#and YET#somehow this specific problem offered to me as a potential thesis activates my sleeper agent purification brain#maybe if I were purifying my Own proteins for my Own assay to answer my Own questions……….#like. I wanna study evolution and genes!!!!!!#but if your genes keep having similar deletions in a protein under a certain condition I wanna know why????????#is it loss of function????? and if it’s not how is it changing function???????? how is it benefiting the organism?????#I was like okay well. have you tried knockouts of wild type and subbing in just this mutation#and PI was like /: we try to avoid knockouts bc expensive#and I realized how spoiled I have been bc I was in a lab where we already had and could afford knockouts and double knockouts#like oh you wanna study this gene? wanna sub in a modified version?#cool let’s order primers we have the knockouts you can put it on whatever plasmid expression system you want#that said. we did not have a plate reader or easy access to genotyping esp expression mass spec so#pros and cons. they do different stuff that they are set up for#but also apparently during Covid the prof that studies malaria literally used his own blood bc he couldn’t afford to source it#which. honestly given current events it’s good to know everyone already can buckle their belts and run a lab on two cents and fellowships#456 words#lab tag

if the next book isn't annie's games or finnick's games, i want it to be a games for which we don't know the victor. and i want it to answer the question of who the redheaded avox was. answer the question of who she and the boy were and where they were going when katniss and gale saw them.
there's so much potential there, esp to tie the inevitability of the rebellion into the story, it aaaalmost makes me want to write a fanfic.

Gaokao
The Life-Defining Exam That Grips a Nation of Millions
Gamal Moustafa
📌 Introduction: More Than Just an Exam
Every June, life in China seems to pause. Factories lower their noise levels. Police block intersections. Helicopters are grounded. All eyes — and hopes — turn to the nation's high school seniors as they take the Gaokao, or National College Entrance Examination.
But the Gaokao is more than just an academic test. For millions of students and families, it represents the gateway to higher education, personal success, and even generational change. Its significance runs so deep in Chinese society that it's often referred to as the "most important exam in a person’s life."
Let’s dive into what makes this exam so monumental — and the human stories that bring it to life.
Tumblr media
Chinese and Gaokao, Photo by Ideogram
📖 What Is the Gaokao?
Gaokao (高考), short for “高等学校招生全国统一考试”, is China’s unified national university entrance examination. It's taken by most students at the end of high school, typically when they are 17 or 18 years old.
Exam Structure:
Duration: Usually 2–3 days.
Subjects:
Core: Chinese, Mathematics, and a Foreign Language (usually English)
Optional (based on track): Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) or Humanities (History, Politics, Geography)
Some provinces offer different formats or elective modules, and reforms are continuously being tested to improve flexibility and reduce stress. However, the pressure remains immense.
🔥 Why the Gaokao Matters So Much
In China, university degrees are crucial for accessing better jobs, social status, and even urban residency permits (hukou). And since elite universities are limited in number, competition is fierce.
🏆 High Stakes, High Rewards:
Admission into top-tier universities like Tsinghua University, Peking University, or Fudan University can transform a student’s life.
Students from rural or poor backgrounds often view the Gaokao as their only real path to upward mobility.
A high score is seen as a badge of honor — a symbol of intelligence, discipline, and family pride.
💥 The Pressure Cooker: Life Before the Gaokao
🧠 Students Under Strain
Preparing for the Gaokao can take up to 10–12 hours of daily study over several years. Students often sacrifice:
Hobbies
Friendships
Mental health
Even sleep
In some “Gaokao factories” like the famous Hengshui High School in Hebei province, students are allowed only 6-minute showers and strictly timed meals. Life revolves around memorization, mock exams, and performance tracking.
Real Story: A documentary aired in 2022 followed a girl named Li Jing, who used a standing desk to avoid falling asleep during midnight revision sessions. Her family sold their car to pay for private tutoring. On the morning of the Gaokao, she said quietly, “I hope I’m enough.”
👪 Parental Sacrifice and Devotion
In China, parents are deeply involved in their child’s education — especially for the Gaokao. They often:
Quit jobs or take leave to support the child.
Rent hotel rooms near the exam center to reduce commute stress.
Prepare special food, avoid negative conversations, and even wear red for good luck.
Viral Moment: In 2023, a mother in Sichuan knelt outside the exam hall, silently praying for her son. When the son came out smiling after Day 2, she burst into tears — a moment captured on video that spread across Chinese social media with over 10 million views.
🛑 When the Nation Pauses: Support from Society
Gaokao days bring a level of national coordination rarely seen anywhere else in the world:
Traffic rules are altered to ensure students arrive on time.
Construction projects near schools are suspended to minimize noise.
Airports reroute flights to avoid disturbing concentration.
Medical personnel are on standby, and ID checks are carried out strictly.
Fun Fact: In some cities, special “Gaokao volunteer brigades” help students find their exam rooms, lend pens, and escort them if they’re late.
💬 The Emotional Toll: Stories That Speak Volumes
Behind every score is a story:
1. A Reunion After Years Apart
In 2024, a father working as a migrant laborer in Guangdong returned home for the first time in 5 years — just to support his daughter during her Gaokao. His emotional reunion at the school gate drew national media attention.
2. The Girl Who Carried Her Ill Mother’s Photo
Another widely shared moment came when a student placed her late mother’s photo on her desk, whispering, “We made it here together.”
🌐 A Broader Context: Global Comparisons
While countries like South Korea (Suneung) and India (JEE/NEET) also have high-stakes tests, China’s scale, intensity, and cultural focus on the Gaokao is unique.
In the U.S., students can apply to multiple schools with holistic applications.
In China, Gaokao score is the primary — sometimes only — criterion.
Some educators have raised concerns about:
Student mental health
Lack of creativity and critical thinking
Overemphasis on rote learning
Still, many believe the meritocratic nature of the Gaokao is fairer than wealth-based admissions or connections.
🌱 The Future of Gaokao: Changing Winds
As China modernizes, education reforms are in motion:
Pilot programs are testing more flexible exam formats.
Some provinces now allow students to retake individual subjects.
Vocational tracks and alternative paths are gaining ground.
But for now, the Gaokao remains the gold standard — and the mountain every student must climb.
🌈 Final Thoughts: Beyond the Test
The Gaokao is much more than just a series of questions and answer sheets. It’s a profound reflection of Chinese values:
Discipline
Perseverance
Family unity
Respect for education
For many families, it represents the hopes of an entire generation — and the sacrifices of those before them. It's a deeply emotional, culturally embedded rite of passage that demands resilience, courage, and heart.
As the last bell rings and students flood out into the summer sun, many weep, hug, and breathe the first real breath of freedom in years.
And regardless of the score, that moment of release — of pride, of love — is priceless.

I think all, or at least the majority of, employees of the public school and university system should be let go, especially administrative employees. They should be replaced with properly trained and thoroughly vetted personnel, vetted to have trustworthy motivations in educating and aiding the development of our nation’s children and college students, vetted for the type of intelligence necessary to achieve educational goals, and trained to utilize their knowledge and motivations properly. I believe this should be done by using tried and true psychological exams, intelligence exams, and then trained and tested using real world simulations, where they aren’t told beforehand that they are being tested in said real world simulations.
