So it’s technically not phones that drag you into a SEKAI correct? It’s playing UNTITLED. So if SEKAIs have been around for a while does that mean it’s possible Miku used to grab people through a gramophone? Or maybe even through sheet music?

Probably not. I don't think SEKAI can physically manifest anything in our dimension like sheet music or a record. Digital .mp3 (.mp39?) files are probably significantly easier since Miku is digital in our world, normally as a vocaloid software, and when she manifests as a hologram when doing cross-dimensional shit. Also Miku didn't exist until 2007, and even if it was Meiko who created the SEKAI dimension that's still 2004.

We know SEKAI have existed since 2011ish at least since that's around when Tsukasa created Wonderland SEKAI according to the timeline.

Erich… isn’t sure what he’s seeing. He knows he’s wearing his glasses and he definitely has not been drinking… So what in the world is going on here? Why is he suddenly seeing things in triplicate?

Three of them. There are three little Degurechaff Devils in an office where there should only be one. 

When he’d knocked on her door, she’d called out that she needed a second. He hadn’t listened to her and opened it anyway. He’s regretting that now. Staring at them, both his head and his stomach are starting to hurt. 

All three of them are staring back at him. One is looking at him in abject horror, the next one’s eyes flash in recognition and she actually smiles (even more shocking, she does it in a way that isn’t uniquely terrifying, but perhaps actually cute), and the final squints at him a bit, as though she doesn’t know him. 

One of the three, the one who looks absolutely horrified, opts to greet him after a moment, “Ahaha—… Colonel Lergen… did you need something?” She sounds like she might be freaking out a bit. Erich feels similarly to her.

The second Degurechaff, the one who had smiled at him, turns her head to look at the first. She looks confused now. “Did you just say ‘Lergen?’ Not Rerugen?”

The first responds again. While she sounded nervous a second ago, it’s forgotten as she turns to her counterpart, “Seriously? You’ve been speaking this language for over a decade and your accent is that bad? Yes, I definitely said Lergen. Why would you pronounce it Rerugen?”

Now it’s the third one’s turn to speak, “No, I agree, it’s definitely pronounced Rerugen, but… this isn’t him. Rerugen has dark hair and brown eyes… and if I’m going to be honest, a fairly unfortunate haircut too. This guy looks too normal to be Rerugen.”

Degurechaff One immediately disagrees, “What are you even talking about? Lergen’s always had blonde hair and blue eyes.”

The second one backs her up, “Yeah, I agree this is definitely the right sort of coloration, but… now that I’m looking at him, Rerugen is supposed to be more handsome than this.”

“Handsome?! Has Being X poisoned your brain that badly?” Number Three yells at Number Two.

Two snaps back at her immediately, “That’s not what I meant at all, and you should know that! I meant by conventional standards! You know, stronger jawline, sharper features!”

Did— did she just say he was ugly?

Before the other two start arguing, the first one cuts them off, “Hold on. Are we sure we’re all talking about the same person here? Maybe you both are thinking of someone else, this is Colonel Erich von Lergen, my superior, formerly a part of Personnel, but now he works in Operations in the General Staff. He’s been looking out for me for a while now. For example, he made an effort to keep me off the frontlines, and when I was stationed in the southeast, he gave me a preliminary warning that Dacia would invade. Things like that. He’s a very good superior. Does any of that seem familiar?”

“Ah… that does seem to match up with who I was thinking of. I wonder why he’s so different from what I know…”

Now that Erich’s kind of over the shock now, he’s a bit tired of being talked about like he isn’t here. Interrupting the conversation between them, he finally speaks, “Degurechaff… what is going on here?”

All three seem to remember that Erich is actually here and a part of the conversation suddenly. They turn back to look at him, but none of them seem to really know what to say, faces varying shades of hesitation, confusion, or irritation.

The way they act and carry themselves is… actually slightly different. Looking closer at them, maybe it’s only that there’s one Degurechaff and two extremely close doppelgängers? If he studies them, yes they’re close enough to be siblings, but there’s differences between each.

The first one is the one he recognizes, the one who looks as he expects her to and also is getting his name and appearance correct. She’s just the slightest bit taller than the other two, but it’s a marginal thing. She’s paler than the other two in all aspects, a corpse-like pallor to her skin, hair colored platinum blonde, and eyes the color of ice. When he meets her gaze, it’s easy to tell her apart. It’d be impossible to mistake those disconcerting eyes that look a bit dead, or perhaps look like she’d want everyone around her dead if it’d bring her a bit of peace. So this one he mentally categorizes as ‘Original Degurechaff,’ or perhaps more accurately ‘The Degurechaff That I Know.’

The second one that he heard speak— the one who had called him ugly?— is the smallest of the three. Of course, Degurechaff has always been small, but this one beats the other two. Actually, she even looks younger than the others, if that was even possible, and honestly she kind of acts like it as well. She has shorter, curlier hair than the others, and it’s much brighter in color— much closer to gold than platinum blonde. Compared to the one he knows, she seems more… emotive, perhaps the best word for it is. So this one has to be ‘Little Degurechaff’ or something to that effect.

The third one is about a midpoint between the two in hair color and stature, though her hair is a right mess. A prominent flyaway sticks out of the top of her head, refusing to lay flat. Framed by pale lashes, her eyes are a more vibrant blue than either of the others, but they’re just as cold-looking and tense. He wouldn’t call any Degurechaff patient, but this one gives him the impression she’s much more irritable than the others. Her uniform is also starkly different from the other two, who are almost matching, but all three carry a recognizable Silver Wings Badge. This one… perhaps he should denote her as the ‘Irritable Degurechaff’? She’s always been irritable, though, hasn’t she?

The designations are a start, but still he has to wonder... Why? Why is this happening?

Ah, hold on. Is that it? Is this a punishment from God, specifically designed to torment me?

TADC theory

Okay so episode 5 gave us alot of information and now that I've had time to process I think I've come up with a pretty good theory about how the characters ended up in the circus & a few characters backstories

So first off to address a few popular theories I previously believed that I think this episode has disproven:

1. That everyone was an employee of C&A

2. That Jax is an npc

I think there is enough evidence to suggest that these theories aren't very likely.

Based on the way characters act and the modern references they make (Jax making a breaking bad reference that Zooble understands) it's safe to say that the characters lived in our modern day world but the computer we see in episode 1 is of a very old early model.

I think the company C&A existed in the 20th century but was shut down and has been shut down for a long time, rendering its main offices as an "abandoned building".

During the bar scene we get a lot of information and this starts with Jax asking Pomni about her job and how she ended up at the circus. Pomni mentions her job as an accountant and then separately mentions how she would explore abandoned buildings, the way its said implies this has something to do with her ending up in the digital circus. Zoobles replies that they also liked to explore abandoned buildings. I think this is how they both ended up in the circus, exploring the abandoned building that was C&As offices, finding the headset, and trying it on out of curiosity.

Ragatha also mentions how before she ended up in the circus she worked in real estate, its possible that is also how she ended up in the circus, checking the abandoned, and probably for sale, lot of the C&A building and stumbling across the headset.

The implication around why Gangle may have went to an abandoned building is very dark considering their chronically depressive state, hate for their job in fast food, and the ending of episode 4 where they fell infront of the moving truck in a manic episode. The assumption is that they probably went there to end themselves and got stuck in the circus before they could.

While Jax doesn't give us a lot, the reactions he has to certain things and the information we get from other characters implies a lot in my opinion. I think Jax may actually be a lot younger than he let's on. He questions Pomni about her age, comments about the school setting in a way none of the other characters do, and he & his friend ribbit have very "childish" bodies in the circus. Presumably he and ribbit entered the circus at the same time as he seems to have a very deep connection to them, being much more upset about their abstraction than the other characters seemed to be about Kofmo who they presumably only knew within the confindes of the circus. They are also similarly themed, both being animals, which only Queenie & Kinger have in common because of their connection prior to the circus & possibly entering at the same time.

Jax being a teenaged boy when entering the circus can also explain his behaviour. He's masking, coping, and immature all at the same time. He falls back on being "edgy" and acts like a bully yet is very sensitive at times, especially when confronted with particularly upsetting things. I also think that Jax may be related to a former employee of C&A. He seems to know quite a bit about Caine's ai (or at least he presumes to since we see him being disturbed when he's proven wrong in ep5) more than the other characters and he has keys to most places in the circus which could imply he got the old employee keys to enter the abandoned office with his friend. It is a very teenaged boy thing to do, especially with a friend, checking out an old abandoned building you have easy access to, one you know there is an interesting game like ai left inside.

It could also explain why Jax has such a strong reaction towards the mention of his lost friend. Not just from grief but also guilt. He could blame himself for being the one to get them stuck there.

Unlike the others, I think Kinger was an employee as C&A. I think he and Queenie may have even been some of the first people trapped within the circus back when C&A was still in operations. We know Kinger has an education in computer science and he's not only been in the circus the longest out of the current cast but he seems to be the oldest as he's put in positions of authority over the others multiple times in episode 5, being the teacher and then the coach. Kinger was probably one of the first people to test the digital circus and therefore one of the first to get stuck, only surviving all these decades because of his partial amnesia/insanity.

Finally, Caine. His behaviour this episode was very interesting. He was very obsessed with improving his adventures and proving they were better than the ones suggested. I think Caine is afraid of becoming obsolete. Presumably whatever job he was designed to do, he was bad at, which led to C&A getting shut down and Caine being left to rot. He's trying to prove both to himself & to the characters that he CAN do what he was programmed to do better than anyone. I also think his focus with horror themed adventures may stem from the fact that people like Zooble, Pomni, & Jax only stumbled across the digital circus because they were seeking thrills, because they were exploring this "creepy" abandoned place so Caine thinks that's what they would find alluring in an adventure which is why he thought making a horror adventure would get Zooble to finally join in episode 3.

Thanks for the compliment on the map. It's definitely a "what if fucked up shit happened?" kind of setting and I consider you an incisive connoisseur of such media in a way I am not. Anything in particular catch your eyes?

Off the top of my head -

The cursed lands is fun; throwing the evil overlord a territorial holding as a sop because it's either not worth it or not possible to have it out definitively is always a favored worldbuilding beat of mine, a great litmus test for the underlying moral logic of the powers that be and the setting as a whole.

Unspeakable desert's also great- love a good black box torture zone. In fiction also!

I like the moon-elf republic- "Morally palatable liberal-democracy but nothing is ever fucking open when you're awake" is such a great monkey's paw bit. I'm picturing human expats going insane and doing I Am Legend bullshit with mannequins in a mostly empty city, except it's not the apocalypse everyone is just asleep inside. Which actually is also what the twist was with I Am Legend so never mind

Zones F, G and H make me think you would enjoy, at a minimum, the aesthetic of Sunless Sea, Fallen London, and the rest of the games in that shared universe, if not necessarily the gameplay.

One thing I'm a little unclear on is where the humans are- is this just the quote-unquote "weird hemisphere?"

To briefly toot my own horn, The Perfection caught my eye because it's basically the exact opposite of how I handled Evil Mushroom Land in the Fallout pastiche setting I've been fucking around with for about twelve years. There's a superintelligent, psychic mycological supercomputer that's infested and subverted the entire ecosystem of the American Southeast; but rather than an inscrutable, inexorable hyperoptimizer, its desires are actually completely politically legible to humans. It's an anarchist-bending towards-anarchoprimitivist, and it sanctimoniously touts that it's created the world's first practical anarchy.... because it's big-brothering everyone who "voluntarily" imbibed its spores and connected to the network, and it can psionically cook their brains at a distance if it decides that they aren't being good enough anarchists. Or if it needs a favor and they won't "pull their weight." Or if their version of anarchy isn't aesthetically compatible with it's gaian edenic pastoralism thing. If you don't "voluntarily" join the network it doesn't actively try to kill you, that would be unjustified initiation of force. No, it just doesn't stop all the jacked-up mutant gators from doing what they'd naturally do if it wasn't inhibiting them. The other North American powers put up with this because it's genuinely the least belligerent and expansionist of its type of hive mind, and they export some really great drugs (all of which are a backdoor for further psychic snooping.)

I'm not very far into this story yet so it's still kind of the nitty-gritty "in the beginning" type stuff, but I hope you enjoy it anyway. I'm sorry I can't write more today, I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow and got way sidetracked doing other things to prepare.

Months and months pass. They spend endless hours talking with Hen and Karen about the process; Karen was so patient explaining the ins and outs of the ordeals, and Hen gave so many details about what agency they used and the different options they had.

Evan spent hour after hour after hour online, researching. He discussed each option endlessly with Tommy, and even though Tommy thought Evan was overthinking it, he listened with rapt attention because… Well.. He wanted this to be perfect for them. For his husband. When they eventually settle on an agency, they get to work finding a birth mother.

They discussed whether they preferred a boy or a girl, but decided it didn’t matter. Evan wanted a baby, though, and Tommy would have rather had a toddler to start with. After talking it over, with plenty of reassurances from Evan, they decide to go the infant route. The giddiness sets in.

A few weeks into the process, their agent mentions a home visit. “Evan and Tommy, I’m so glad that you’ve decided on adoption. There’s so many kids out there that deserve loving homes and you two seem like an amazing opportunity.”

Evan smiles so broadly at the phone that his cheeks look like they’re about to split. Tommy takes one of his hands and brings it to his mouth kissing his knuckles before settling it back on the table. “We’re so excited, Emira. This… I… We’ve been waiting a long time.”

There’s softness in her voice when she replies, “Yes, I can imagine. I know you two have already started searching out potential mothers, but before we get too far, we need to discuss a home inspection.”

“Home inspection?” Tommy asks, raising his brows. He knew that was something that happened, but he thought that was only for those who planned to strictly foster. “Why do we need one of those?”

She laughs brightly. “No need to sound so alarmed, Mr. Buckley-Kinard. We’re not there to white glove your home and inspect every single nook and cranny of your space. No. What we’re there for is to ensure that you two have the proper environment for raising children. Obviously we’ll do a walk through of the home, but there’s no need to do any extra cleaning before we come - we want to see what the child’s environment will be like day to day - and then we’ll sit down and have a conversation about the two of you; mostly what you do for work, what your relationship health is like, do you have a support system, and things of that nature. The day of the in-home visit, you’ll need to block off a minimum of two hours, though depending on the size of your home, it may take significantly longer. I, personally, would suggest taking the day off since the home visit can’t be split into separate days. You’ll also need copies of some personal data, such as your birth certificates, but we can discuss that close to the day of the event. Does that all make sense?” She pauses, a bit breathless but still cheerful.

Evan huffs an overwhelmed laugh. “Wow, um… That’s a lot.” Tommy rubs his back. “So we can’t pick a mom until after these visits? How many do we have to go through?” The conversation continues as Tommy continues to be a reassuring presence at Evan’s side. A few more months pass, and Tommy can tell that his husband is losing steam. He wants a child so badly, but there’s so many hoops to jump through. They survived the home visit, though they were questioned extensively about their jobs. Both of them being in high risk professions put up red flags for the interviewer, but once Tommy explained that he mostly flew air transports, she seemed to be assuaged and passed them. Flying colors they were not, but at least they weren’t blocked before they even truly began.

Was there ever a stated reason that alt vocals by non virtual singer characters for commission songs that aren't their own died out by most units' 5th singles (rui's filament fever alt vocal is an anomaly) or is it just implicitly because they don't feel like making a bunch of alt vocals anymore

Honestly I have no clue. Maybe they just decided only the focus character should do it. Or they did say occasionally they have to rerecord some vocals for the alts, so maybe they decided it was too much studio time (not like they can't afford it).

For the record, every singer sings the entirety of every comm for their unit (with some exceptions due to vocal range), and the vocals are then mixed to make what you hear in game. Alts do exist for every character for every comm, they just aren't released. We KNOW CRaZY alts for all 4 members exist, Umetora tweeted that he made them and emailed them to the seiyuu and I think Fumiyan mentioned it on stream too. They're not staff-made so they can't use them but surely it wouldn't be hard for them to just do the exact same thing.
