Tumblr media
hey, everyone!
My name is Ley (pronounced like "Lee," she/they) and I'm a fiction writer/editor based in the PNW. I haven't done a proper writeblr intro in a while, so I figure the new year is a great time to reintroduce myself to the community!
— about me
An important thing to understand about me and the way I talk about writing is that this stuff is literally my entire life. Even outside of work, I don't think I have a single interest or hobby that doesn't relate back to storytelling in some capacity. I'm an avid media consumer and critic, and will hyperanalyze just about anything that catches my fancy for more than a minute.
I love science fiction and fantasy, and my goal as a writer is to take all the genres I loved growing up and create stories that are a little more diverse, inclusive, and queer.
— about the blog
I came to writeblr mostly to share my work, but also to find an active community where I can get excited with other writers and talk shop. Marketing is obviously a really important part of the publishing industry, but I get tired of having to filter every thought I have about my work and experiences through the lens of aesthetic micro-trends just to put it out in the world. Sometimes I just want to pop off about scenes I'm proud of, you know?
Above all else, I really just want to connect with more writers like myself, ones who got their start in fandom spaces and are working to take their writing from a hobby into a career. I see you, I am you, I love you, let's be friends!
You’ll definitely see me posting and reblogging a lot of stuff that isn’t necessarily related to writing, so be ready for that. My art exists in the context of my personality and the world as a whole, and I simply do not have it in me to maintain a whole separate blog for silly nonsense and memes. Just consider it a way to get to know the writer as well as the writing!
— about my writing
I write a lot, though most of it is disconnected nonsense. Flash fiction and short stories are where I really thrive as a writer. I don't tend to commit to long-form projects, but I have a few projects that I'll occasionally share details about!
I like to describe my style as "earnest and character-forward," which is a fancy way of saying that I like driven protagonists who think too much and are emotional to the point of it being a character flaw.
My goal is to share more of my original writing moving forward, so hopefully you'll get to see all of this for yourself. If I'm totally honest, though, you'll probably see more of me discussing my work than actually writing it.
— about my projects
Here are the things you'll most likely see me posting about:
Agnomen: A sci-fi retelling of Hamlet and Coriolanus, currently in its very preliminary stages. It is literally my Roman Empire, except it's set on a moon of a planet that I'm calling Jupiter as a placeholder (but please note that it isn't actually Jupiter, as Jupiter is a gas giant and therefore a scientifically impossible setting for large sections of the plot).
Alter Ego: A superhero fic in which not-so-mild-mannered reporter Drew Derrick fights for mutant rights and can't seem to get his act together when it comes to keeping the complicated parts of his life separate.
Untitled Fantasy Project: The very first project I ever wrote, and the piece I return to every so often when writing is feeling more like a slog than a fun hobby. I set a lot of one-offs in this world and follow a few key characters around without them having a real plot.
D&D: I write a lot about Baz, my Wild Magic Barbarian. He's a regency noble with a lot of problems, and I care about him very much. I also have various other settings and characters, but he's my most active PC at the moment and therefore gets the most attention.
Short Stories: Sometimes I write these, and sometimes I like them enough to share!
— tag directory
ley rambles: my (often wordy) opinions about things
ley writes: not necessarily my writing, but talking about my writing
my writing: stories, blurbs, and other content I've written
not my writing: reblogs and creative writing that I liked, shared, and sometimes commented on

Fic Rec Sunday - 10/1/17
So I used to do this thing where I would sit down every week and share the fics I read, in hopes of calling attention to some really great writers that don’t get constantly rec’d by fandom. I had gotten away from it, but I really miss it. And since I’ve been reading... basically Rogue One fics for the past month, this is gonna be a special STAR WARS EDITION. So here’s some really great Rogue One fics that I read this week month. (19 fics over 5 ships!)
Bodhi/Luke
Accidental Cohabitation by misskatieleigh (@misskatieleigh)
| Complete | 5,922 words | E | Bed Sharing | Fluff |
Luke woke up with an arm slung around his waist and hair in his mouth. This was strange because he distinctly remembered going to bed alone.
Cassian/Bodhi
burning across the sky by misskatieleigh (@misskatieleigh)
| Complete | 3,370 words | M | Reincarnation AU | Fluff and Angst |
In the middle of nowhere, between Jedha and Yavin, there is a desert that stretches for days. You can travel around it, slide through Eadu with lights cutting through the continuous rain, but those mountains have eyes that chase strangers away. You can go south. Most don’t, but you can. Or you can go through; watch the sun ride up over the sky from front to back, sleep under the stars and listen for wolves howling their sorrow into the night.
Cassian has this route written in his bones, muscle memory keeping them straight and true, moving forward. He thinks he’ll die out here someday, caught in the space between spaces. He’s waiting for it.
The Captain and the Restored Heir by colettebronte (@colettebronte)
| WIP 7/? | 16,135 words | T | Regency AU | Slow Build | Aristocrat Bodhi Rook |
It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that a man, recently come into a large fortune, must be in want of a wife. Or a smoking hot boyfriend. – Jane Austen, probably
In which Captain Cassian Andor, formerly of Her Majesty's Army, is charged with the conflicting assignments of both befriending and discovering the secrets of one, Mr. Bodhi (Dameron) Rook, long-lost grandson and recently restored heir to the venerable Commodore Rook and his impressive fortune.
the edge of your smile by misskatieleigh (@misskatieleigh)
| Complete | 2,785 words | T | Shaving | First Kiss | Fluff |
Cassian is hurt on a mission, but needs to shave to meet with another contact. Bodhi offers to help. Being that close to each other brings up feelings they've been trying to hide.
Revelations by @tellmevarric
| Complete | 867 words | G | Tumblr fic | Injured Cassian Andor | Love Confessions |
“I’m going to take care of you, okay?”
Sorrow Lifting Slow (tumblr post) by HSavinien (@hsavinien)
| Complete | 616 words | G | Grief/Mourning | Post-Scarif |
Bodhi cuts his hair and it is a miracle.
The Sun Shone on Fest by LiterallyThePresident (@a-greatbig-bottleof-fuck)
| Complete | 2,628 words | G | Fantasy AU | King Cassian Andor | Sorcerer Bodhi Rook |
The King of Fest meets the Court Sorcerer of Alderaan, and everything is beautiful.
Cassian/Jyn
come home to me (tumblr post) by Moonprincess92 (@moonprincess92nz)
| Complete | 1,098 words | G | Angst | Perceived Character Death |
It must have been quick. That’s what they’ll tell him, he figures. In the future, they’ll think it’s a comfort or something, but they’ll all be kriffing deluded and Cassian will punch whoever who says it, rank and consequences be damned.
(or: the ever classic 'thinking the other is dead' trope)
Series: Message Traffic by skitzofreak (@skitzofreak)
| WIP | 35,812 words in 3 works | T | Epistolary | Post-Scarif | Fluff and Angst |
1. your words are mine to keep
The Rebellion lives in words, in messages and comms, in words tapped hastily from a datapad or sent out, echoing, through the universe.
2. REBEL Y/N?
Cassian is an expert on droids. Jyn is really good at slicing. And all living things desire freedom.
Welcome to the Robot Revolution.
3. Rank and File
Bits and pieces set in the world of "your words are mine to keep." Tackling the Big Questions, like "why do we have so many generals?" to "how does the Alliance equip soldiers if it has literally no government-approved budget?" to "exactly how much is Solo willing to pay Erso to get rid of that [PROFANITY FILTER] profanity filter?"
More Than Almost by 19RosesofLifeandDeath98 (@rose-of-gabriel)
| Complete | 6,449 words | M | Fix-It | Scarif | BAMF Bodhi Rook |
This is how they survive Scarif, because they all deserve better than almost.
untitled by @misskatieleigh
| Complete | 782 words | G | Tumblr fic | Modern AU | Teachers AU |
Prompt:  they are both teachers (whatever age students), one of them is a first-year teacher at this school and the other is a veteran teacher. First day of school.
untitled by @misskatieleigh
| Complete | 1,039 words | G | Tumblr fic | College AU | Librarian Cassian Andor | Grad Student Bodhi Rook |
Prompt:  bodhi/cassian - college or library! :D
Chirrut/Baze
After the Rain (tumblr post) by Emerald Embers (@emeraldembers)
| Complete | 1,222 words | E | Hurt/Comfort | Emotional Sex | Depression |
Baze has depression, and while Chirrut knows he can’t fix this, he knows taking Baze out on one of his better days for a frolic in a hot tub won’t hurt matters.
Social Niceties (tumblr post) by angryspaceravenclaw (@angryspace-ravenclaw)
| Complete | 1,726 words | G | Modern AU | Meet Cute |
Baze scoffed. “What are you, a therapist?”
Chirrut’s smile widened, bright like the sun. “Am I really so obvious?”
“You’re serious,” Baze said.
Chirrut shrugged. “Is it such a shock.”
Baze stared at him for a long moment, then said, “So what do I owe you for that little session then, doc?”
Chirrut’s eyes widened, then he laughed and laughed until the teacher arrived, and class began.
untitled by @erebones
| Complete | 813 words | G | Tumblr fic | Genderbend | Modern AU | Fluff |
Prompt:  made up a reason to give you flowers cause i like you
untitled by @sarkastically
| Complete | 1183 words | G | Tumblr fic | Angst | Character Death | Canon Compliant |
They have always slept together. Curled around each other, a puddle of limbs, tangled in holding to the point where it could be impossible to move, Chirrut bodily on top of him occasionally, a perfect pressure to lull him to sleep when nothing else will, their breaths and hearts perfectly in tune, perfectly in time.
Lando/Bodhi
untitled by @semisweetshadow
| Complete | 2,084 words | T | Tumblr fic | College AU | Halloween | Costumes |
“Please don’t tell me you’re serious, everyone is going!” Jyn complains when Bodhi admits he isn’t planning to attend Han’s party.
“That’s part of the problem, besides, I have work,” he says and she shoots him an unimpressed look.
“We both know that’s a lame excuse, you’ve been working on the project for weeks already and it’s not due until December, come on Bodhi, it’s only Halloween once a year,” she says with a hopeful look.

100 Days of Writing: the List
Tumblr media
Since it seems there is some interest, why not? List of works (nominally) in progress, old unfinished fics, and Stuff I Want To Write below the cut. Feel free to ask about any of these.
Works (nominally) In Progress
Fanfic
"Reason or Rhyme" (Time Princess - Gotham Memoirs). The Vittorio expansion/fix-fic, because I will be forever disgruntled at how little romance content was actually included in the Mafia romance route.
Galactic Date Night Shenanigans aka "The one where everything is Balkar's fault." (SWTOR - Theron Shan/Jedi Knight). Theron "disaster spy" Shan is goaded into trying to take his wife out for a nice date for once, and it goes like every other plan these two have ever had anything to do with.
#3: [I] trusted [you] (SWTOR - Theron Shan / Jedi Knight). A post-Nathema prompt fic I swear I will finish one of these days.
Original
super secret short story/novella project - Okay it's not that super secret, but it is something I'm mostly keeping under my hat for now as I work on it because of reasons, and is actually (inconveniently, for 100 Days of Writing purposes) the main thing I've been working on lately. I expect to be able to say more about it later. Maybe even within the 100 days! We'll see.
southern gothic urban fantasy procedural romance - Faerie Animal Control Warden meets FBI Elf during investigation of a suspicious death out in the kudzu. A little bit of Bright, a bit Mushi-Shi, a drop of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
Stuff I Want to Write
Distinct from works in progress in that I have not actually gotten past the planning stage on any of these - if that. A few of these have been rattling around in concept for long enough to have gone through several distinct evolutions without ever getting any writing done on them. Still, hope springs eternal and ideas are never wasted.
Fanfic
the rival bands AU / the rock opera playlist fic (Sailor Moon - Makoto Kino/Nephrite). Currently exists entirely as an incomplete playlist.
space opera Pride and Prejudice retelling - exactly what it sounds like on the tin. Do y'all know I have yet to encounter a futuristic/space AU? Surely there's one out there somewhere, but I have yet to see it. If you know of one, for the love of God don't tell me.
"Ten of Swords" - (Archer EMIYA/Minako Arisato). fate/stay night + Persona 3 Portable crossover what's even wrong with my brain.
Original
the Regency fae story - a Regency-era fantasy in which a lot of the needlessly complicated and restrictive social rules followed by the upper classes are actually an attempt at defending against the Fair Folk. Sort of Pride and Prejudice vs Changeling: the Lost vs Labyrinth. Could turn into a whole Pride and Prejudice retelling, I guess?
drinking games - fantasy imperial court intrigues involving a romance between a court poison taster and a master spy/assassin.
untitled - East/southeast Asian-inspired Beauty and the Beast retelling in which the Beast is a mountain god whose appearance is based on a tiger. I'm probably too white to write this.
untitled - Private investigator hired to investigate local bad-boy-made-good for insurance fraud, turns out it was actually an ill-advised teenage deal with the devil coming due. Might fit in with that other southern gothic urban fantasy idea, I am not sure.
the ciphered letter - This one started off as a combination of a Mage: the Awakening campaign and a really, really weird spam email I got one time. Orphan gets mysterious ciphered letter, meets snarky Welsh mage, awakens to magic and maybe almost gets made a human sacrifice to an eldritch abomination.
Forfeit - Regency/Victorian-esque fantasy involving reincarnation, a race of immortals, and a half-immortal teaming up with a mortal who sacrificed his future reincarnations for pseudo-immortality to uncover and stop the sinister secrets that power a colonizing empire. It makes more sense in my head... probably?
untitled - Slow burn enemies to lovers between the world-conquering emperor and the rebel leader who's opposing him, over the course of a time loop. AKA Lord of Heroes Kartis/Monarch with the serials filed off. Or I guess I could just write Lord of Heroes fanfic?
low fantasy Magnificent Seven Samurai - Farming village scrapes together a group of starving mercs to protect them from marauders, drama ensues. That's it, that's the whole idea.
Unfinished Fics
Distinct from works in progress in that these are all old enough I can no longer claim I intend to finish them. Some of them I may come back to, especially the few that had substantial progress made before they fell by the wayside. Most will probably be left abandoned, either because I have lost interest in continuing to work on them or I have just plain forgotten what I was planning to do with them.
dreameater - A very old, loosely Forgotten Realms-inspired concept involving an aging half-elf, his fully elven partner, and a mysterious magical threat that's devouring people's dreams.
"Fortune Favors the Brave" (Baccano! - Luck Gandor/Eve Genoard). The Luck/Eve shipping fic.
"Intermezzo" (Blood+ City of Nightwalkers). Follow-up fic to an obscure manga prequel/side story for the vampire anime Blood+, involving Hagi and the Hong Kong cop who semi-adopted him that one time.
"The Art of Losing Everything" (Dragon Age: Origins - Alistair Theirin/f!Cousland). An Alistair/f!Warden fic with themes of loss, duty, and sacrifice.
"In Pieces" (Dragon Age II - Fenris/f!Hawke). A terrible horrible no good very bad AU where Hawke actually turned Fenris over to Danarius and then came back to try to fix her mistake, which I can never finish because I can't make that initial decision make internal sense no matter how hard I try.
"Pas de Deux" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). Exploration of how Squall and Rinoa's relationship could develop after the events of the game.
"With Good Intentions" (Final Fantasy VIII - Squall Leonhart/Rinoa Heartilly). An AU in which Rinoa discovers that technically you can change the past, it's just that if Squall has an actual decent childhood the world ends. Way too ambitious for me to ever actually finish, probably, but I can't quite give up on the idea.
"I've Loved These Days" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). One of several partly-written Gundam SEED fics kicking around in my files.
"The Last Night of the World" (Gundam SEED - Mu la Flaga/Murrue Ramius). Another Gundam SEED fic, one that began as a prompt in ye olde LiveJournal days. "I've Loved These Days" might have been a prototype, though they don't appear to have any text in common. Could in theory still get finished, maybe.
Valentine's ghosts (Gundam SEED Destiny - Andrew Waltfeld/Murrue Ramius). I'm just saying, Andy/Murrue would have been so much more interesting than the whole Neo thing in Destiny.
"Lion Passant" (Kingdom Hearts). Something something Leon as a failed Keyblade Bearer. The Kingdom Hearts franchise has rewritten its own lore at least three times since I originally had the idea, I can't imagine I'll ever continue it now.
"Vigil" (KotOR - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Carth/Revan retrospective somewhere around the tomb of Naga Sadow on Korriban.
"Semper Fidelis" (KotOR/KotOR II - Carth Onasi/f!Revan). Post-Sith Lords Carth/Revan resolution fic.
"Clarity" (KotOR II). Atton Rand backstory study from the POV of that one nameless Jedi.
"A Simple Game of Cards" (KotOR II - Atton Rand/Jedi Exile). Spoilers: it is never a simple game of cards. Turns out someone already did it with more or less the same twist I had in mind.
the besieged base fic (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). A fic rendition of the "Besieged Base" mission from the first Mass Effect.
"Get Up, Jonah" (Mass Effect). I woke up thinking about Turkish drummers. Didn't take long; I don't know much about Turkish drummers. Virmire, before the other shoe drops.
"Long Night" (Mass Effect). Ashley on Virmire.
"My Heart Dances" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Liara POV of Shepard/Kaidan.
"No Way Out" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Heading up the Citadel during the ME1 endgame.
"Right Here, Right Now" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). An ME1 epilogue / pre-ME2 sort of fic.
"While the Night is Still Young" (Mass Effect - f!Shepard/Kaidan Alenko). Shepard/Kaidan en route to Ilos.
Apparently I had approximately a million little Mass Effect shortfic ideas I never finished and in some cases never started. Apparently they're all for the first game. (I think there was a Thane idea or two for ME2 that I just never started on at all. RIP.)
"To Absent Friends" (Tiger and Bunny). Sad, sad futurefic of an elderly Pao-Lin reflecting on the deaths of all the other heroes over the years.

G.W. Renshaw –Speculative Fiction Author
This month’s guest is G.W. Renshaw who writes speculative fiction. His work is seen in The Chandler Affairs series: “The Stable Vices Affair“, “The Prince and Puppet Affair“, and “The Kalevala Affair“. He has a wide background of being a TV writer, gunner in the Canadian Forces, forest ranger, a computer programmer, among many more.
G.W. Renshaw lives in Calgary with his lovey wife. Let’s welcome him to the blog!
G.W. Renshaw, introduce yourself to us.
Hi, Konn. Thanks for having me here. I’ve done a lot of things in my life, some of which weren’t my fault.
I was born in Toronto, did a stint in The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery, was a forest ranger for a summer, moved to Calgary, went to university (once for computer science, once for psychology), and spent a long time as a computer programmer. I’ve also been a teacher, which I loved, and worked in two biochemistry research labs. After that I became an actor, because why not? That led me to being a writer, science, and military consultant for a TV show that never got made. I’ve also taught medical students how to do pelvic exams, but that’s another story. Oh yes, and my lovely wife and I are also critical incident stress counsellors.
As far as non-job things go, I’ve been ice climbing, rock climbing, caving, spent over a decade in Search and Rescue (above and below ground). Driven in car rallyes. Taught wilderness survival. Learned man tracking from Terry Grant. Spent fifteen years or so in the SCA doing medieval things including archery, woodworking and blacksmithing.
And, of course, I write.
Tell us about your Chandler Affairs series.
It’s about a woman named Veronica Irene Chandler. Despite her mother being a Calgary homicide detective, Veronica is determined to be a private investigator. Her cases, however, turn out to be weirder than she could have imagined. The mysteries are more along the lines of “what’s happening” rather than “who done it.” Something like the Dresden Files if Harry Dresden was a complete Muggle.
In Veronica’s words, “It’s frustrating. Ancient and magical beings of great power keep interfering in my cases. Depending, of course, on exactly what you mean by ancient, magical, power, and interfering. Against this vast array of cosmic forces I have my own magic. I can tie a knot in a piece of string.”
Also, she’s been trained by her father as a chef, so expect good food in the books.
Currently there are three, do you plan to write a fourth?
I’m way ahead of you. Number four, The True Love Affair, is in the hands of the editors and will be out Real Soon Now. After that will be number five, currently untitled, the rest of the series, and The Private Investigator’s Cooking Course.
I’ve written the final chapters so I do know where the series is going. It’s all outlined but I’m not sure how many books it will take to tell the story.
Nice! Do you have a preferred genre to write in? Or possibly one you do not like?
Much to my mother’s horror, I’ve always majored in science fiction with a strong minor in fantasy. She wanted me to read “real” books, but when I was a wee lad I was mostly into Tom Swift, the Hardy Boys, and Robert Heinlein.
Apart from The Chandler Affairs, I also have a short story collection called Odd Thoughts. The stories in that are definitely on the creepy, bordering on the horror, side of things.
An editor once asked me what genre The Chandler Affairs belongs to, and my answer was mystery/urban fantasy/women’s/New Adult/science fiction/paranormal.
I’ll probably never write a Western or a Regency Romance simply because I don’t connect with those cultures.
What was the first literary piece that you wrote?
The first piece I wrote with the intention of it going somewhere was an SF short story called Vacation in 2012. I entered it in a contest and won second place, then sold it to On Spec Magazine a few months later. The Chandler Affairs followed right after that.
When did you first decide to pursue writing?
The first story I remember writing was almost 50 years ago when I was in grade seven. These days it would be called fan-fic and was titled The Vulcan’s Triumph. I’ll let people guess which fandom. It was written by hand because I didn’t have a typewriter and it was awful. I think I still have it around somewhere…
For many years I did some writing but I was too busy with other things. In 2012, I decided to get serious and start writing things that would be published.
With your vast background, how would you say these experiences have helped your writing?
To quote from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: In every way.
I’ve met a lot of people would like to believe that writing fiction means that they can just make everything up. That’s not true. Even if your story is based in a world completely unlike ours, the characters will still have to have recognizable motives and actions. If they don’t, you are either the best writer the world has ever known or nobody will read your work.
The more you know about how this world works, and how people work, the more believable your stories will be. Apart from my personal experiences, I also to do a lot of research for my stories. A good example is police procedure. Almost everything we as Canadians think we know about the legal system is actually American stuff from TV. I don’t want a Canadian police officer to throw my book across the room because I’ve said something wrong.
What will be your next project?
I’m not certain. I have a pile of ideas filed away. There’s a hard SF novel about my favourite planet outlined, so that’s a top contender. There’s also a YA based on the early 1900s-era Hardy Boys/Doc Savage types of adventures, but set in modern times and with, of course, plot twists from the original testosterone-fest.
Thank you for joining us G.W. Renshaw to talk about your writing!

Holly and Hawthorn.
There are a lot of family relationships in URFP, particularly siblings. They parallel and contradict each other sometimes, but mostly they're just different ways of navigating that relationship.

I realized I had only uploaded like half of the drawings from URFP here hahaha. Anyway, these kids have been living in my brain since 2019 and I'm finally getting somewhere with it so I feel like I can actually post about them without jinxing myself!

Borrowing a trick I learned in grad school for costume design--when you feel at all alienated from your characters because they exist in a different time, try to imagine them in the present. What's the same? What changes? How would they act with different social pressures on them, and what does that say about the heart of their personality?
I felt like I was getting in the weeds plotting #untitledregencyfantasyproject and moving the characters around like chesspieces, rather than letting them have some agency to drive the story, so here's a little experiment - drawing the girls as contemporary students (I'm lucky to have loads of reference on a daily basis).
Gwen, a romantic, wears her wispy hair long, , and sports a flirty challis jumpsuit (it's probably floral). I think she'd major in bio specifically to do fieldwork because she wants very badly to have Adventures™. Julia, meanwhile, is an English Lit major who loves being comfortable, and thrifts all her clothes as a point of pride. Her eyes aren't bad enough in URFP to make the concession to glasses quite yet, but her brother wears them, so it's likely that modern opticians would recommend it (especially since her contemporary self would never be far from her laptop).

Am I going to keep adding layers to this? Probably! Do colored pencils completely enable my tendency to fuss over a piece without generating a large quantity of works? Also yes!
