the meaning behind the kanji of mizu and taigen's names is literally not ever gonna leave my mind.

like are you kidding me. mizu is 水 ("water"), we all know that. but what drives me insane is that taigen is 泰源 ("peaceful origin").

so when you put them together ("tai" 泰 + "mizu" 水), you literally get "peaceful water."

MIZU ALONE IS JUST MIZU, BUT PUT TAIGEN NEXT TO HER AND IT'S MIZU, BUT AT PEACE.

ALSO, both "tai" 泰 and "gen" 源 contain the "mizu" 水 character as a radical. for those unfamiliar with japanese or even chinese, a radical basically means a building block for another character; so in this case, the kanji for "tai" and "gen" both use the kanji for "mizu" as one of their building blocks.

this is also why, while "gen" 源 can refer to any general type of origin or source, it also specifically refers to a fountainhead: a source of water, or the origin of a river or stream.

and like yeah okay i know that it's a 99.9% chance that the creators didn't even think about any of this. but STILL. the brainworms have fully taken over and i am going CRAZY.

Not a stupid question, but the only French I know are the handful of words and phrases English has stolen in its humorous attempt at pretending to be its own language instead of several languages in a trenchcoat!

I've got some friends who speak French so I could probably hassle one of them if I ever needed to, though that's not really the same as speaking it myself 😂

mm sometimes i think my yanderes would take advantage of the fact that I cant do some of the things most people can do with ease like tying their shoes or telling the difference between left and right, or the way i absorb info just to force me into being a baby. I've been having some trouble with doing tasks most people can do, so it is fun to think about different yanderes making you do baby-level math worksheets, or French vocab sheets and crosswords meant for little kids. Or having those grid papers to write Cantonese and Mandarin, or in your case with mommy Kakyoin, katakana. Why bother teaching you kanji or hiragana? You'll only be confused. And hiragana is more commonly used-- he doesn't need you knowing what common signs and objects actually say. Then you won't feel as lost, should you manage to slip away from his hands for a moment.

So instead of a little duotang with worksheets for your math, linguistics, or animal noises, Diavolo tries to set up little activities for you to do every day. I was on a reddit page for a manga series that has never been officially translated into English and it looks like you can only really read it from one scanlation website.

Anyways there's about 5 chapters missing* on the website so someone asked "hey is there anywhere else I can read these missing chapters". And someone's only response was "just buy the manga at that point"

katsuki bakugo’s world is quiet, mundane. and yet, with you, he might as well have the entire world of sound to himself

katsuki bakugo’s world hasn’t always been silent. it boomed and echoed just as he did, highlight every little bit of his being and making sure that everyone—everyone—knew of his name.

the ringing in his ear after nitroglycerin sweat explodes out of his hands was one he relished in, proof that yes, he was stronger than most. but that drum off the bass seems to slowly cloud into a tinker of a cow bell and before he knew it, katsuki bakugo can barely hear his own voice.

katsuki’s world hasn’t always been silent, but when counselors and teachers say him down, typing out hiragana and kanji on their keyboard to communicate with him, it felt like there was a thick, glass barrier that separated him and the normal world. he couldn’t hear them, no matter how irritatingly slow everyone mouths to him. they point and their lips and treat him like he’s a helpless child and the same feeling he felt when he fell into that river in his childhood rushes back to him like a tidal wave.

bakugo always finds himself storming out of the classroom during the one on ones with counselors and teachers, slamming the table with rough, calloused hands and knocking his chair down with full throttle of his legs, shouting with what he thinks is what he wants to say before walking out with a slam of the sliding shoji doors. his parents can’t blame him, especially if the world he once knew was slowly going quiet around him.

despite those meetings, he always finds the people who call themselves his friends waiting outside of the classroom, leaning against the wall across the door and smiling gently at him. they didn’t treat him any differently, but bakugo could always feel that they were a lot more softer on him now, more cautious with their action and hands becoming more fluid.

then, there was you, and by god, he hated you.

there was a way you slam down a packet of papers before tugging a chair close to his desk, sitting with a lazy grin and pointing at a math problem he swears you’ve asked help over for days, the way you aren’t as careful with him as the others are, the way you treat him like he’s can still hear your voice. maybe because of it all, that’s why he wasn’t as shocked when you learned to sign.

katsuki has long gotten used to signing and he isn’t bothered with how people ask him to write or type down what he’s saying. the rough etching of his handwriting becomes ever so slightly softer and the grains of pencil lead doesn’t dust and crumble out as it once did. maybe it’s because he’s learning how to sign and maybe it’s because the rough motion of his handwriting has now translated into the waves and swoops of his fingers and hands.

“how do you do this,” you sign like a child learning how to move their hands for the first time— messy and discombobulated— but the thought was there. you point at a math question with complex letters scattered and placed onto top of a fraction, accompanied by a number you don’t even want to think about saying out loud.

you lazily spin your pencil around between your fingers, only for it to be snatched away with rough hands by the individual in front of you. you let out an almost offended ‘hey !’ yet, you don’t do anything. bakugo is crouched down and quickly scribbling on your paper, using the eraser once or twice just because he wrote a number weird.

adjusting your seating, you rest your head on the palm of your hand, watching with a lazy grin as the equation is quickly solved within a minute. the blonde drops the pencil like a mic drop and turns the paper for you to see.

“hmm,” with an index finger, you glide through the paper and lazily read the steps getting smaller and smaller as the unknown x is quickly found. you notice a few arrows pointing to a step or two as detailed explanations of just what exactly he did is written nearly, a chuckle escaping from your breath. “you’re too good at this. makes me pissed.”

katsuki can see your lips moving, but never catches just what exactly you had said. there’s a clear raise of his brow that you see and you smile, taking the pencil from his hands and writing just exactly you had said on side corner side of the paper. he reads it. then frowns.

‘you’re pissed ? what does that make me ?’ he signs with a little more aggression than usually put. it takes a moment for you to process fully on what he had signed before you burst out laughing, the type that makes you throw your head back and hold your stomach as you struggle to catch breath in your lungs and prevent cramps from happening. katsuki can’t hear your laugh, but he remembers it. it’s the kind that echoes in classrooms and hallways and the kind that you can’t miss. it’s the kind that someone would make when forming an inside joke and the kind that rumbles with all your heart.

katsuki bakugo’s world hand grown to become silent, but with you, your laughter and the way you speak to him as if he can still hear your voice, he might as well have full hearing.

9 lil things abt the way some ikevil chars speak in japanese you probably didnt know

in the jp version, even after getting into a relationship, kate actually still consistently calls elbert with his title, “lord elbert” [エルバート様] (erubāto-sama). in jp, the only ones who do not use the honorific would be victor, william, and on occasion, alfons, who seems to switch between [エル] (eru), [エルバート] (erubāto), [エル様] (eru-sama), and [エルバート様] (erubāto-sama) on a whim.

in case en doesnt localize this well or fully when it does come…there is a time when victor switches his personal pronoun from [僕] (boku) to [俺] (ore). these words mean the exact same thing (i, me, my, etc), but the latter is meant to have a more “masculine” feel. [僕] (boku) is used quite a bit by boys as well (in fact, ellis’ personal pronoun is [僕]), but it can also treated as a sorta “gender-neutral” character in songs, for example, and girls can use [僕] as well. on the other hand, you wouldnt ever see a girl using [俺].

nica has an interesting…speaking quirk, where certain words that should be written in hiragana r written in katakana. for example, he might say [イイ] (ī) as opposed to [いい] (ī), or [ホント] (honto) rather than [ほんとう] (hontō), [ワケ] (wake) over [わけ], [てアゲル] (—te ageru) over [てあげる], etc. this is likely a “personal style” thing to make him seem more flippant, cuteish, or youthful. this kind of thing is also more common in fictional characters who were raised abroad.

darius uses [ほっぺ] (hoppe) to say “cheeks”. the traditional way to say cheeks is [頬] (hoho). they mean the exact same thing, but saying [ほっぺ] (hoppe) to refer to cheeks has a childish or “innocent” air to it, partially due to the way its written entirely in hiragana. he does tend to have a childish air abt him, and this is probably one of the most direct examples of his childishness when it comes to the way he speaks.

alfons changed his way of speaking at some point after entering the greetia manor. before then, he often used more casual speech, known as [くだけた表現] (kudaketa hyōgen), but eventually he changed his way of speaking to whats known as [です・ます] (desu•masu) form, even using [敬語] (keigo), which is like very polite or humble japanese with their own set of vocabulary and conjugations. this is likely due to becoming elbert’s “attendant.” so he likely had to speak that way and it may have just become a habit or a sort of integral part of his identity, as he uses this language even after getting into a relationship with kate.

another tidbit of victor: he often — for example — ends questions with [かい] (kai). the other way to end questions in japanese would be to just use [か] (ka). but by adding [い] (i) to it, it can add emphasis or “soften” the tone. its mostly used by men, and using such a form is often associated with older men and women (40+), but younger men can use this too.

it might be more noticeable with jude bc he originally speaks in a whole different dialect [関西弁] (kansai-ben), and will switch to queens english, i.e. standard tokyo japanese, for business related reasons or if he feels its necessary to for a reason. but roger also can switch his way of speaking as well. he would mainly do this with ppl hes not well acquainted to or with well respected personages. he normally speaks pretty casually in japanese, shortening words or phrases, though not speaking in a different dialect. for example, he might say [そりゃ] (sorya) instead of [それは] (sore ha). but in certain situations, he might opt to use [それは].

william and elbert speak in the same form [だ・である] (da•dearu) due to the fact they r nobles — such a form comes off as more direct, imposing, or just strong in general — but they also do have their own “speaking quirks” as well. for example, when saying the word “but” or “however”, will often uses the word [が] (ga), while elbie opts for [けれど] (keredo). will also tends to end his sentences or remarks with [だな] (da na), something that elbie does not really do. that said, the way they both say “yes” is the same: [ああ] (ā).

kate uses honorifics with ring, specifically [くん] (—kun), when requested by ring to not be so formal with him (btw kate also uses [くん] with ellis), but when ring refers to kate by her name rather than “robin”, he doesnt use any honorific on her. on the other hand, nica continues to call her “robin” / spatzi / rotkehlchen what have you, but asks her to not use [さん] (—san) with him at all. so kate just calls him [ニカ] (nika). not using any honorifics is what’s known as [呼び捨て] (yobi-sute), and its smth that should really be done with ppl you feel v close to or with family (or otherwise its incredibly rude), but kate probably only did so with nica at that pt so she could respect his request, rather than an actual feeling of closeness.

Something Important About Hinata...

The way Hinata speaks in the Japanese version of SDR2 is a big deal for his character, and what contrasts him so well from Naegi Makoto.

Before we jump into that, I must briefly explain how Naegi talks, as it is integral for the comparison.

Naegi is very mild-mannered. His self-pronoun of choice is ボク (Boku) in Katakana. While the only self-pronoun in English is I/me/my, Japanese has many, all written in different ways, and these pronouns tell you a great deal about the character's personality.

In this case, what does this say about Naegi?

Naegi using Boku as opposed to Ore - another male pronoun - shows he's very mild-mannered. Boku is more polite than Ore is, and makes him appear more soft, polite, and less boyish than a number of his other male classmates who do use Ore.

Boku can be written in Hiragana ぼく, Katakana ボク, and Kanji 僕. So why Katakana for Naegi? What does it show?

It can show many things, but in Naegi's case, it emphasizes that he, above all else, is a teenager. Yes, all his classmates (minus Hagakure) are, but when I say it emphasizes this, I mean it shows he embodies what a teenager is. He's young, but he's not a kid. He's a little awkward; he's not fully mature in how he reacts to the world yet. He's hip and trendy, and maybe a little moody. Combine this with Boku, and you are told all you need about Naegi out the gate as soon as he says "My (ボク Boku) name is Naegi Makoto": he is a mild-mannered growing boy, probably up to date on the latest trends, probably a little awkward and soft-spoken, nicer than most males his age, and maybe even a bit naive.

These are all things that we learn to be true as the game goes on, but just by his pronoun alone, we can tell these things about Naegi.

Furthermore, there are different styles of speech, such as what particles you use. Some are more masculine or feminine, some speech styles are more rude. In Naegi's case, he uses gender-neutral particles, once again hinting at his mild nature.

So, what about Hinata?

Hinata is the opposite. We can tell from the get-go based on his self-pronoun.

He uses 俺 (Ore) in Kanji.

As said, Ore is more rude and man-ish than Boku. Right out the gate, the audience knows Hinata is going to be more rude, boyish, and assertive than Naegi.

His particle choice, compared to Naegi, also is mostly masculine, and he employs ruder speech options. Again, this paints Hinata as someone much more outspoken, forceful, and meaner.

This was no accident. In fact, it was a core part of his character, stated in the SDR2 art book:

"No, that's wrong!"* The boldness of this catchphrase is truly what makes Hinata who he is. Each time he says it in a Class Trial, it feel more self-assured than the last. In the last killing game at Hope's Peak Academy, the protagonist was a well-behaved, un-masculine person, which caused some issues, and he was even criticized at a point for being "too arrogant for Naegi-kun". Kind men are fine and all, but for a protagonist, I want someone a little more fired-up!

*In English, both Hinata and Naegi's phrases are translated the same. However, Naegi says sore wa chigau yo, while Hinata says sore wa chigau zo. Yo is gender neutral, while zo is masculine and can sound ruder, hence this being the line that "Makes Hinata who he is".

But...why Kanji?

Using Kanji for a self-pronoun in a character signifies many things. In Hinata's case, it tells us he's intelligent, mature for his age, probably acts more grown-up and pragmatic than boys his age. It can also be a sign of being dignified, almost noble-esque. For example, Togami also uses 俺.

But...it's strange, right? Because while Hinata is smart and is more pragmatic, he is also pretty obviously still your average teen. In fact, it's something he laments: he's painfully normal.

So...should it not be オレ, Ore in Katakana?

After all, almost every teen boy protagonist in media uses オレ, or a form of it (like Goku, who uses オラ Ora, a "Southern" version of Ore, still in Katakana). Would it not make more sense for Hinata to then use オレ?

I actually don't think so.

Besides personality differences that could warrant the use of Kanji, I think the usage of Kanji is most purposeful as a subversion of expectation. Like I said, generally speaking, most teenage male protagonists uses オレ. Pick up any shounen, and the protag will likely be using オレ.

In my opinion, by using 俺, the same self-pronoun, just written in a different script, it imparts something very small but very noteworthy to the audience: something is off about this otherwise normal teenager.

Hinata talks about how he's painfully normal, but then, why not the painfully normal pronoun?

Out the gate it gives this off feeling. Ever so slightly, something is wrong with the guy that shows he's not as normal as he claims.

And then, Chapter 6 happens.

It's incredibly clever foreshadowing, all just by changing how the character says "I".

To add on...when Hinata underwent the Kamukura project, they truly ripped everything from Hinata, including how he speaks.

While Hinata uses 俺 Ore, Kamukura uses 僕 Boku in Kanji. I've already explained both Boku and Kanji script, so you can probably put them together. But in short, it shows Kamukura is far more mild, less assertive and less masculine. He is intelligent, regal, far above everyone else, but is polite.

More interesting is the way Kamukura speaks. He talks closer to Naegi, using gender-neutral particles instead of rude or masculine ones. However, he is even more polite than most characters, as he uses Keigo.

Keigo is "polite speech", and as it suggests, makes a character sound polite and formal. Characters like Tsumiki and Sonia use it.

In Kamukura's case, this makes him sound...like an academic paper. He is mild-mannered, he is polite, he is intelligent. The way he speaks gives the feeling of a reporter on the news, a scientific paper, an essay - someone who is there to relay information, not his feelings or opinions. Which is funny, seeing as he can't help but give his opinions in calling everything boring. I think that contrast shows, despite Hope's Peak's best efforts, Kamukura is still human.

It is still a far cry from Hinata, who's manner of speaking alone exuded so much personality, so much feeling, and a whole lot of self-expression.

Finally, I'll cap this post off with a fun fact: Kamukura probably was never going to have red eyes.

This is just a theory, but there is interesting pieces of evidence to support this.

In all versions of SDR2, early beta sprites are used for nearly every truth bullet. If a truth bullet is using a character sprite (such as a testimony truth bullet), it most likely is using an early version of the sprite by accident. This can be seen with Souda, Sonia, Nanami, Tsumiki, Komaeda, etc.

With this pattern in mind, here is the truth bullet with Awakened Hinata on it:

Beyond the fact he's missing the red eyes, you can tell it's a very early version as his shoulder and hair aren't as spiky as they should be.

They hadn't quite edited the sprite yet. But, I find the lack of red eyes interesting when compounded with a strange piece of merch I talked about here.

I won't repeat the details as you can check the post out if you'd like, but I will show the photos again.

Considering early beta versions of sprites are sometimes mistakenly used in Danganronpa merch (and other beta sprites were used in this merch line, such as Komaeda's), this makes me assume this, too, is a beta Kamukura sprite, and he was originally intended to have Hinata's eye color.
