When I had finished the last server build, I had been looking for a way to simply address the needs that QNAP had been fulfilling for me with ease. With MyQNAPCloud I could easily share files or folders without issue. While on the hunt for the latest release of OwnCloud, I hit Google and just tried something. I tried “OwnCloud vs” and let the magic of Google happen. That is how I found Nextcloud.

While I won’t get into how Nextcloud came to be, I will tell you that there are a ton of similarities between the two products. When you do some research, it will become clear why that is. However, that is neither here nor there, the product is attractive, seamless, but a major pain in the … to get running. As usual, the best things in life are on linux. With that in mind, I created a Hyper-V hosting Ubuntu Server LTS 16.04 and started my journey.

Much of what I detail out here will be under the assumption that you have a CLEAN Ubuntu LAMP server up and running. For me, Hyper-V was a quick and logical start, but that doesn’t limit you to anything. Feel free to run VirtualBox, VMWare, or dedicated hardware.

Considerations

Before you build out your virtual machine for this install, there are some considerations to make. For instance, you need to plan for the amount of space that your VM will occupy. For me, it is easy, all my folders reside on another server, so a 100GB virtual hard drive is overkill. I have seen some “paid” for preconfigured VMs running around in 500GB and 1TB flavors.

Log into your system with the username and password you provided during your install.

When you first log into your server, you will be dropped in your user’s home directory. The path for this will be, by default, /home/username

There are a few modules that Nextcloud will need

On January 15, 2006, the Stardust spacecraft’s sample return capsule parachuted gently onto the Utah desert. Nestled within the capsule were precious particles collected during Stardust’s dramatic encounter with comet Wild 2 in January of 2004; and something else, even rarer and no less precious: tiny particles of interstellar dust that originated in distant stars, light-years away. They are the first such contemporary interstellar dust particles ever collected in space and returned to Earth for study.

Before they can be studied, though, these tiny interstellar grains have to be found. As we have discovered since we started the Stardust@home project in 2006, this is not easy. Unlike the thousands of particles of varying sizes collected from the comet, scientists originally estimated that Stardust would collect only around 45 interstellar dust particles. After a thorough search of about one-third of the collector, we have so far found only four particles that appear to be interstellar. So they are incredibly rare and precious. They are tiny only about a micron (a millionth of a meter) in size! These miniscule particles are embedded in an aerogel collector 1,000 square centimeters in size. To make things worse the collector plates are interspersed with flaws, cracks, and an uneven surface. All this makes the interstellar dust particles extremely difficult to locate.

If we were doing this project twenty years ago, we would have searched for the tracks through a typical laboratory microscope of the era. Because the view of the microscope is so small, we would have had to move the microscope more than 1.6 million times to search the whole collector. And in each field of view, we would have had to focus up and down by hand to look for the tracks. This is so much work, that even starting twenty years ago, we would still be doing it today!

This is where you come in:

Since we cannot do this by ourselves, we are asking for help from talented volunteers like you from all over the world. Of course, we can’t invite hundreds of people to our lab to do this search-we only have two microscopes! To find the elusive particles , therefore, we are using an automated scanning microscope to automatically collect images of the entire Stardust interstellar collector at the Curatorial Facility at Johnson Space Center in Houston. We call these stacks of images focus movies. All in all there will be nearly a million such focus movies. These are available to Stardust@home users like you around the world. You can then view them with the aid of a specialVirtual Microscope (VM) that works in your web browser.

Together, you and thousands of other Stardust@home participants will find the first pristine interstellar dust particles ever brought to Earth.

In recognition of the critical importance of the Stardust@home volunteers, the discoverer of an interstellar dust particle appears as a co-author on any scientific paper by the Stardust@home team announcing the discovery of the particle. The discoverer also has the privilege of naming the particle! Each particle, as it is discovered, will be given some kind of alpha-numeric identifier (an address of sorts) for book-keeping purposes. But the name that people will actually call each particle will be given to it by its discoverer. For example, Bruce Hudson of Ontario, Canada, discovered our first candidate interstellar dust track. Its official NASA “phone number” is “I1043,1,30,0,0” – which is very hard to remember and doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue. So we asked Bruce to give it a name to publish it by, and he decided on “Orion”, and then later “Sirius” for the accompanying upstream particle that was discovered very nearby. Bruce was featured in a recent article in Nature on Citizen Science projects. To also recognize the efforts of our volunteers who work hard, but may not have found a particle, we will invite the top-ranked volunteers to come visit our lab in Berkeley for a special tour. (Unfortunately, we are legally precluded from covering travel expenses.)

How to participate:

First, you will go through a web-based training session. You must pass a test to qualify to register and participate. After passing the test and registering, you will be able to login to the virtual microscope. The VM will automatically connect to our server and download focus movies. The VM will work within your web browser, under your control. You will search each field for interstellar dust impacts by focusing up and down with a focus control.

The VM downloads and displays these images, so that you can do just what someone sitting at real microscope would do: focusing up and down in each movie to look for tracks. To use the VM you will need a relatively fast internet connection, and the latest version of just about any web browser. To find out more about the system requirements for the VM visit our Tech FAQ.

Some things to keep in mind while searching…

The instructions for searching with the VM are simple. Click on the tracks if you find them, or click on “No Track.” If any part of the FOV does not focus beneath the surface of the aerogel then click on “Bad Focus.” If you see something else of possible interest that does not appear to be a flaw in the aerogel or a particle track, you should click on that as well.

Each focus movie will be viewed by many different people. When a volunteer identifies the focus movie as either having or not having a particle track the movie will be given a score. The score the focus movie receives will be weighted by the score of the volunteer.

Scoring

Stardust@home volunteers (aka “Dusters”) accumulate two types of individual scores: “Power Score” and “Skill Score.” Your scores are based on random VM calibration movies (also called “Power Movies”). For more information on Power Movies and how your Power and Skill scores are calculated, please see the Help page. Please note, once you sign-up to take part in Stardust@home, you will receive feedback e-mails about Power Movies you’ve missed. The emails include what the missed values were, and a link to see a picture of exactly where each calibration track was located so that you can study at your leisure what we want you to be looking for. This information will also be available to you on your “My Events” page while dusting – even if you choose to opt-out of receiving the feedback emails. Please be aware that you WILL miss Power Movies that are essentially impossible – even we miss those! But if you are routinely missing tracks with low values (less than 30 or so), we encourage you to go back and review the training. Everyone, even long-time veteran dusters, can benefit from a refresher.

The best attitude for this project is this: Have Fun! If you’re not having fun, stop.

As with any research project, the outcome is uncertain. You may be lucky enough to find an interstellar dust particle. You may find an interplanetary dust particle. You may find something entirely unexpected. Or you may search for hours or days and find nothing at all. We simply don’t know what will happen. This unpredictability is what makes science fun!

The search will take several years to complete. Our automated microscope at the Johnson Space Center can scan about one tile of aerogel from the Stardust interstellar dust collector tray per day. There are 130 tiles in total. We may have false starts (in fact, we already have), where we discover a problem and have to rescan one or more tiles. For example, once we find a dust track, we may decide to change the lighting conditions or the scanning parameters so that the scans are better. Please be patient with us!

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t find something right away, or even later in the project if many interstellar dust grains have already been found. We don’t know a lot about interstellar dust grains. But one thing that we do know is that they are diverse. Even if 99 interstellar dust grains are eventually identified near the end of the project, it may be that the 100th is the most important–the rare grain that turns out to be the key to understanding interstellar dust! Again, please be patient, and remember that the most important thing is to have fun.

What to Do When Your Traffic Takes a Nosedive

Since accepting the offer, you and your team have put in months of hard work to get it done. Launch day came and went; all of your hard work was finally about to pay off! But as the weeks following the site redesign go by, the exact opposite of what you expected to happen, happens. Sales dwindled. Phones that constantly rang eventually came in drips. Qualified leads became mostly spammy submissions. The C-suite is naturally going to ask questions, so like any good marketing professional, you turn to your data for the answers. Instead of that reassuring feeling you’ve come to expect from your analytics, the answers you find in the data shock you. Users? Down. Sessions? Down. In short, your traffic fell off of a cliff. It tanked hard. Failing to consider website redesign SEO is a very real possibility that marketers and site owners face whenever they consider redesigning their site. Without bearing in mind the impacts a redesign can have, you can seriously hurt your organic search traffic. If you’ve experienced a significant traffic loss post-redesign of your site, this post is for you. We break down why that may have happened. On top of that, we cover a few options you have for getting that traffic back. First Things First – Did Your Traffic Really Tank? This might sound like a redundant question. After all, you can take a look in your Google Analytics account and clearly see that traffic is down. Traffic can decrease for lots of reasons, but here are some ways you can evaluate your site to see if your site traffic actually tanked due to not properly planning for a site migration from an SEO perspective. Check Your Site Code for Missing Analytics Tags No matter what analytics platform you use—Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics, Piwik, Clicky, and so on—there is some kind of site-wide code these platforms use to track how users interact with your site. Without it, analytics tools have no way of recording traffic data. Ask yourself; is this code installed on every page of your site? If you’re unsure, crawl your site with a tool like Screaming Frog to see if your code is missing from any pages. Did you install Google Tag Manager (GTM)? According to BuiltWith, at least 7.8 million live websites use GTM. If you did install it and add your analytics tool to one of its containers, you might need to do some troubleshooting. In case you didn’t know, the easiest way to figure out if your site uses GTM is with Tag Assistant, Google’s free Chrome browser extension. If after the above you’ve concluded that your analytics configuration is correct and tracking works as expected, proceed to the next step. If analytics tracking is not collecting data as intended, try fixing it first, and then wait for more data to see if your site’s performance continues to suffer. Did You Contract Your Site in Any Fashion? We have consulted with many companies who redesign their sites and then become concerned when their traffic takes a hit. As we begin to dive in, our analysis typically uncovers several reasons why their traffic tanked. A support forum or knowledge base that was once public facing on their own domain is now discontinued or hosted by a third-party provider like Desk.com, Freshdesk or Zendesk. Content now deemed outdated or irrelevant to the site has been unpublished, such as old blog posts or company listings in a directory. Business model or service offerings have changed, resulting in fewer pages on the site to be indexed to generate search traffic. Businesses evolve, so we all understand that changes like this happen. However, we tend to overestimate the extent by which 301 redirects will save your traffic. It is true that 301 redirects will send your visitors from a former URL to a new destination in an SEO-friendly way. However, if an older webpage had keywords mapped to it via Google’s index, it could take a long time for Google to figure out where to find the new page and whether it is worthy of prior rankings. Let’s say that you decide to sunset old, irrelevant blog posts and 301 redirect those URLs to your main blog page, here’s what is most likely to happen: Search engines will follow that redirect over the course of 90 days, sending traffic intended for your old pages to your blog main page. Over time, Google will learn that you eliminated that posts and that your blog main page is not a relevant match for your old pages. Google will stop ranking your old pages for the search queries they used to occupy. Over time, your traffic from search engines will drop significantly. Now, this doesn’t mean that 301 redirects are bad. If you legitimately migrate content from one URL to another, then you should always use a 301 redirect. If you have backlinks that send referral traffic that you don’t want to lose, refer those visitors to a new destination with a 301 redirect. Or, better yet, see if you can get the referring site to update the link to your new page. When you do that, however, you are still signaling to the search engines that the page you are redirecting no longer exists. Because of that, the search engines will remove that page from the index over time, and your rankings will go along with them. If you did decide to reduce the size of your site and your search traffic tanked, that likely should have been expected. It is possible to bounce back and regain that lost traffic, but not without a serious effort to improve SEO across the board. Your Traffic Really Did Tank. Now What? If you’ve come this far, you have probably confirmed that your site: Has fully functioning analytics code. Has not been contracted in any way. Has still lost a significant amount of traffic. You’re probably ready to hear all about what options you have to course correct. To get started, let’s go through the three most common reasons why your site traffic from search has likely tanked. 1. Old 301 redirects weren’t updated. As previously mentioned, you should use 301 redirects if you migrated pages to new locations on your site. Many companies are successful at mapping redirects from their previous site to a new one. Depending on how many versions of your site have existed, these may be the only redirects you need to manage. Lucky you! 😉 But, if your site has been on the web a long time and undergone multiple changes, then setting up redirects from the most recent version of your site to the new version is just the tip of the redirect iceberg. Much like how Google has a record of every single thought you have ever searched, they also have a history of every single webpage your domain has ever hosted. And here’s a little tip—the search engines want to know the new destinations for those old web pages. If old redirects are causing your traffic to tank, here’s how you can fix it: Map those old redirects to their new destination, placing a priority on the ones with backlinks pointing to them. Upload those redirects wherever they need to be placed. While this is a very tedious and time-consuming fix, you should start seeing search traffic return quickly once you begin placing these redirects on your site. 2. SEO data wasn’t migrated from your old site to your new one. You spent years cultivating the perfect title tags, meta descriptions, subheadings and schema on your site. But when you launched your new site, you may have rewritten all of your content, and forgot to copy over all of that SEO friendly information. When the search engines crawled your new site and realized you didn’t have any of that beautiful SEO data they have come to expect, they dropped your site in the rankings, favoring newer content they deem more relevant to searchers. If this is the cause of your traffic tanking, here’s how you can fix it: Review your old site files (hopefully, you have them backed up somewhere). Transplant as many of the previous title tags, meta descriptions, headings and schema markup settings you can on your new site. Similar to redirecting old web pages, adding old data is also a very tedious fix, but very necessary. While not as time-consuming as mapping redirects, recovering traffic this way might take a little bit longer because the search engines will only update your content when Google recognizes and accepts the changes made to your site. 3. Your developers forgot to remove the noindex/nofollow tag from your header. We see this happen to redesigned sites a lot, and it still amazes us every time because it requires such a simple fix. Commonly referred to as the robots meta tag, you can use this tag in your site header to tell search engine spiders not to index a page or follow its links. Check out this great resource if you want to know everything there is to know about this tag. Developers sometimes forget to remove this tag from header files when they migrate from dev environments to production. Removing the tag is so simple to do, but it happens more often than you’d think. When developers forget to take this tag out of your header, search engine spiders stop crawling your site. Meaning that your pages get removed from the search engine index. No one can find your site in searches anymore. Your rankings decline. Your traffic tanks. To determine whether or not you have a noindex, nofollow tag in your header, pull up any page on your site and hit CTRL + U to look the page’s source code in your browser. Once the source is opened in a new tab or window, hit CTRL + F to search for either “NOINDEX” or “NOFOLLOW.” Do you see the following line of code in your source file? If yes, then this is likely the cause of your traffic drops. Here’s how you can fix it: Login to your content management system Navigate to your Settings or admin area Adjust your settings to enable or encourage search engine visibility (completing this varies wildly based on your platform). In WordPress, you can navigate to adjust this setting under Settings > Reading. Website Redesign SEO & Your Next Steps It’s a commonly quoted statistic in the web design community that a site should be redesigned every three years or so. Depending on your industry, you might be doing redesigns more frequently. Either way, a general rule of thumb for companies that rely on website traffic to generate business opportunities is to redesign their site every few years. So, if you haven’t already done so in recent memory, you should likely plan on tackling a website redesign sometime in the next nine to 12 months. If you have recently redesigned and your traffic tanked, here are a few things to remember before you freak out: Your tanked traffic doesn’t mean you have tanked rankings. Make sure you have your tracking code placed throughout the site. If you reduced the overall size of your site, your traffic is likely to go down, also. Just because traffic is gone now doesn’t mean it will be gone forever. Was every page on your site properly redirected? Was your important SEO content transferred to your new site before launch? Was the noindex, nofollow tag removed from your header? Time is of the essence. The longer these issues go unaddressed, the longer the recovery time. When it comes to religious institutions, Americans exhibit some contradiction between their beliefs and their actions.

On the one hand, the vast majority feel that churches and other houses of worship are powerful forces for societal good: according to the Pew Research Center (http://www.pewforum.org/2015/11/03/u-s-public-becoming-less-religious/) , almost nine in ten Americans say that religious institutions “bring people together and strengthen community bonds” and “play an important role in helping the poor and needy,” while three-quarters believe they “protect and strengthen morality in society.”

Americans’ bullishness on the positive impact of religious institutions, however, doesn’t fully extend to their active participation in them: only half attend religious services on a monthly basis, and even fewer attend weekly.

This number is naturally lowest among those without a particular religious affiliation — a cohort that has been growing in size over the past decade. “Nones,” as they are called, now represent 23% of the population (including over a third of Millennials), about a quarter of which consists of agnostics and atheists, with the rest being those who are simply religiously unaffiliated. Only 4% of these Nones attend religious services weekly, with 24% attending monthly, and almost three-fourths attending seldom to never.

But even among those who are affiliated with a religion, regular attendance at their faith’s services is rarer than one might think. Only 46% of the religiously affiliated attend services every week, with another 35% saying they go 1-2 times a month, and 18% reporting they go seldom to never. Among Millennials, the number is much lower; only about 27% attend services weekly.

When all groups are combined, only 36% of Americans attend religious services on a weekly basis (and as we’ve discussed previously, significantly less of this percentage is made up of men (http://www.artofmanliness.com/2016/08/01/christianitys-manhood-problem-an-introduction/) ). That represents a small but significant 3% drop in attendance over the last decade.

Recent decline aside, service attendance has been low for much longer than that. Gallup surveys (http://www.gallup.com/poll/1690/religion.aspx) , which peg the percentage of people who currently go to church or synagogue weekly or almost weekly at 38%, show that even 25 years ago, that number was still only 44%. And if you read books from the early 20th century, and even farther back, the authors remark on how few people were going to church even then.

Church has been a hard sell for a long time.

But there’s still a really good case to be made for going. And not just for the devout or orthodox, either.

Note: In the rest of this article, we will use “church” when referring to religious services, as Christianity-based religious institutions are what almost ¾ of Americans would participate in, if they participated. But the principles outlined apply to attendance at all houses of worship, including mosques, synagogues, etc. (continued next week)

These conversations are meant to help the vestry continue to plan our future as a community of faith, and to help keep us growing! It's really important that we have your input and we hope that you will be able to make one of the sessions that are graciously being hosted at homes of parishioners. The conversations will last approximately 2 hours and will be facilitated by members of the Vestry.

You will see signup sheets in the parish hall for the currently scheduled sessions - each session can hold 10-12 people. THE ENTIRE VESTRY encourages you to sign up for one of the sessions and help us continue to grow as a community of faith.

I can point to 2 stories I heard from those willing to get up and talk about their reasons for giving that have been the great inspiration to us to commit our financial support of the faith community we have been a part of (including St. Anne’s of course)over the past 20 years or so. I know how important it is to hear people speak of reasons for giving in their own words. What’s New in ArcGIS Online (September 2017)

ArcGIS Online has just been updated with the following new features and enhancements. This is a relatively minor update, but includes a few key new features, and enhancements throughout the ecosystem.

Map Viewer

Map Viewer is a built-in app that enables you to view and author maps, navigate, see map details, edit, perform analysis, and more (depending on your privileges). New for this release:

New symbol sets have been added for emergency management, local government, and state government.

You can now set a refresh interval to an image in a layer pop-up, useful for images that need to be updated regularly, such as those captured by a traffic cam or other updating image source. See Show images.

If your map has a layer with a large number of points, you can now configure clustering to make it easier to display and explore your data. When you enable clustering, features are grouped into a single symbol when they fall within a certain distance of one another.

Clustering is applied dynamically at multiple scales, so as you zoom out, more points are aggregated into fewer groups, while zooming in creates more cluster groups.

Scene Viewer

Scene Viewer is an app built into ArcGIS Online for creating and interacting with 3D scenes. New for this release:

You can style point cloud layers directly in Scene Viewer using Smart Mapping.

You can visualize your layer using elevation, intensity, class codes, or true color, based on your point cloud data attributes.

The vertical placement of your building (3D object), integrated mesh, and point cloud scene layers can be adjusted using the new elevation offset option.

Scene Viewer now supports vertical coordinate systems (VCS) and vertical units with scene or imagery layers that have precise vertical measurements.

OGC Web Map Service (WMS) layers can now be added. View the legend and configure pop-ups to further explore your data. See What layers does Scene Viewer support?

Living Atlas

ArcGIS includes a Living Atlas of the World with useful and authoritative maps on thousands of topics. Living Atlas is built into ArcGIS, providing an easy way to access basemaps, maps, layers, and more.

Esri vector basemaps have been updated with the latest commercial data for North America, South America, and Europe. In addition, the vector basemaps have been updated with detailed local data for dozens of communities in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere.

The World Imagery basemap has been updated with DigitalGlobe and Community Maps imagery for several countries, including Afghanistan, Germany, and Spain. Several dozen metropolitan areas in other countries have been updated with sub-meter resolution imagery.

Story Maps

Story Maps let you combine authoritative maps with narrative text, images, and multimedia content, making it easy to harness the power of maps and geography to tell your story.

To improve usability and follow Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0, enhanced keyboard navigation has been added to Story Map Journal. Keys can be used to navigate through the sections and around all the interactive elements, like buttons and links.

Configurable Apps

Configurable apps provide an easy and fast way to go from a web map to an application, with no coding required. The following are new for this release.

Map Styler and Scene Styler are no longer in beta.

Crowdsource Reporter now supports setting a comment period in which users can submit new reports, comments, or votes.

Public Gallery is now in mature status. As an alternative, consider using the Maps and Apps Gallery or Minimal Gallery (beta).

Web AppBuilder

Web AppBuilder offers a way for you to easily create HTML/JavaScript apps that run on any device, using a gallery of ready-use-widgets. You can customize the look of your apps with configurable themes, and can host your apps online or on your own server.

The following widgets have been enhanced:

Infographic now supports using a layer’s symbology as chart colors when applicable; parsing a date field as a category field into selected units including year, month, day, hour, minute, and second; and sorting charts by value and label. Options were added to specify the maximum categories to display and determine whether or not to ignore null values.

Bookmark has new configuration options to display bookmarks in cards and list views, reorder bookmarks, and control whether or not end users can add bookmarks. Bookmarks predefined during configuration can no longer be removed at runtime.

Smart Editor has new options to show a list of valid drawing options for the selected template and to display the preset value list above the template picker. It also supports feature action so you can open it from the pop-up once it’s been configured in the app.

Filter has a new option to collapse filters with an Ask for values check box when the widget first opens

Apps for the field

ArcGIS apps for the field help you use the power of location to improve coordination and achieve operational efficiencies in field workforce activities. Apps for the field have had numerous enhancements since the previous ArcGIS Online update including the following new features and capabilities.

Explorer for ArcGIS

Explorer for ArcGIS allows everyone in your organization to discover, use, and share maps on their Mac, iOS, or Android device.

Explorer for ArcGIS has moved into the field by adding functionality to make it easier to replace your paper maps. Use maps online or download maps packaged for offline use, mark up your map and share your sketches with your organization, and get directions or use the compass to find your assets. Explorer for ArcGIS supports more responsive vector basemaps, maps created with smart mapping, related records, and Arcade labels.

Navigator for ArcGIS

Navigator for ArcGIS is a mobile app that gets your field workforce where it needs to be, unlocking efficiency and improving reliability.

Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS is an app that enables you to monitor, track, and assess your assets and daily operations.

GeoPlanner for ArcGIS

Geocoding and geosearch

Organizations interested in optimizing geocoding and search results for addresses and places of interest can now create a new view of Esri World Geocoding Service to search only for specific types of locations within an area of interest. For example, you might create a locator view to limit search results to particular areas, or to enforce a specific level of precision when members perform batch geocoding of addresses.

Coordinate reference systems

Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) and United States National Grid (USNG) are now supported coordinate reference systems for publishing CSV files or Excel files as hosted feature layers. You can also now add CSV files to Map Viewer that use MGRS or USNG coordinates.

AMP is built for speed. The main concept is readability. Special design, effects and features are not important in the accelerated mobile page.

When a valid Google AMP page is posted and indexed, Google will then cache it on its servers.

Once the page is cached, Google can rapidly fetch it for dispaly when someone tries to view it. The AMP version is already faster by itself, but through heavy caching, the loading of the page in mobile browsers seems instant.

Many third party applications will also cache the AMP version of your pages so that they can display it very rapidly.

Both versions of the AMP page (the hosted one and the cached one ) will contain rel=”canonical” which points to the original mobile webpage. In case the website is responsive, then the AMPs will point to that version.

I asked Will Critchlow, from Distilled, what he thinks about AMP, and if he thinks it will succeed in becoming a standard in the future.

2. How Can AMP Improve SEO?

In the early days, before AMP was even released for the search engines, Google had speculated that it might impact SEO at some point.

They have not officially stated that AMP affects SEO in any way. In February 2016, John Mueller said in a Google Hangout that AMP isn’t a ranking signal.

AMP still isn’t officially a ranking factor in 2017. Here’s a tweet from John from early 2017:

Keep in mind that most people use AMP as a second option for their website. If you have a responsive website, you will mark the original HTML page as the canonical version. This means that you will have a rel=canonical from the AMP to the original version.

In this case, your main website will be the responsive version of the website, not the AMP one. Google will then index the fully responsive version of your website, and use that to calculate the quality score of your page.

However, having an AMP page marked as canonical on a responsive website makes your AMP version the only indexable version.

If the AMP is canonical, then that’s the version that’s indexed (usually that means you only have AMP version, no other one).

At first, I thought that AMP was only for mobile. I mean… the name is Accelerated Mobile Pages, right? But John’s statement proves that you can have an AMP only website.

And guess what:

The AMP official website at ampproject.org is exclusively written in AMP HTML. There doesn’t seem to be any issue with rendering an AMP page on a desktop device. The site looks great. It even has nice animations on it. And of course, it is pretty fast.

A website can be built entirely on AMP HTML, as long as it’s built correctly. It will display well on both desktop and mobile devices.

We also know that Google is testing the mobile index first, so it makes sense now to have a strong mobile version more than ever. Mobile SEO will soon become the standard for desktop search results as well.

There are cases though where desktop versions were indexed first for mobile, even though an AMP version was available.

Jennifer Slegg wrote about this, back in November 2016, after the State of Search Conference. She also tweeted about it.

This happens probably because in many cases, the AMP version is not only stripped off HTML but also off content. If Google indexed only the AMP version by default, then those pages would actually have a disadvantage.

2.1 Site Speed and Dwell Time

The speed of your site matters a lot. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, people tend to abandon slow loading sites.

Google has tested that many times, and results have been consistent. People who implement AMP get higher loading speeds, which results in better CTR and more conversions. If you read about the topic long enough, you will notice a lot of positive experiences with AMP. These experiences mention lower bounce rates and higher dwell time.

You see, informational websites usually suffer from higher bounce rates. This is because when people find the information, they usually click back or exit the page. It doesn’t mean that the page is bad or that it offered a bad user experience. It’s just the way things happen.

Content marketers usually resort to popups and forms in a try to get leads and keep their customers from bouncing. Although this works and many marketers commend it, it can negatively impact the speed of a website, which in turn will lead to the same problem: people leaving your website.

Google AMP tries to fix these problems. At first, people thought that because the limitations, sign-up forms might not be available anymore. AMP fixed this with recent updates and forms are now available.

As we stated in another article, dwell time is related to SEO and it’s like a brother to the other similar ranking factor, the bounce rate. The more people stay on your site and the less they bounce, the better your rankings will be.

Both bounce rate and dwell time are factors tracked through Analytics. We can use Analytics in Google AMP as well.

From the phrase above, we can understand that AMP Analytics data can blend with regular data, which might bring better mixed results over time. You can read more here.

2.2 The AMP Carousel, Cache and Third Party Apps

One of the most intriguing features of Google AMP is the possibility to be featured in a carousel. The carousel will only show AMP pages, and although it doesn’t always get triggered, it will show above the SERPS, therefore placing you at the top of the page.

Here’s a series of screenshots taken with my mobile phone. The screenshots show the AMP carousel in action. You can check it out yourself by accessing http://g.co/ampdemo on your mobile device. I simply searched for ‘Obama’.

The carousel has good parts and bad parts. It’s good to be featured at the top of the page, over the #1 spot, but at the same time, readers are one swipe away from leaving your website. Google AMP is very good for readers, but publishers and advertisers might not agree with every aspect of it.

As we can see, although Google stated clearly that Accelerated Mobile Pages don’t affect SEO directly, some indirect factors can lead to SEO improvements.

Google AMP doesn’t directly affect SEO, but indirect factors that result from AMP can.

AMP’s purpose is to improve the user experience. And from what we know, better user experience results in better rankings.

What’s really cool about AMP is that it cannot impact your rankings negatively. If you implement AMP and use rel=”canonical” to point it to your main version, Google will use that to calculate the quality score for ranking.

Remember: if you only have an AMP version of your website, then Google will use that version to rank you. If you build it well around the stripped HTML and are willing to accept all the current restrictions, you will have a faster website that offers a better UX.

3. How to Implement Google AMP

Ok, AMP looks cool. Now, how to get it?

Well, if you’re using one of the popular CMSs out there (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla) things are as simple as installing a plugin/module/extension, or whatever they are called.

3.1 How to Install AMP on WordPress

WordPress is the most popular CMS on the web. You’re probably using it. The WordPress development team already has an agreement with the team at AMP Project, so an easy implementation was expected.

The default and official WordPress AMP plugin can be downloaded here. Yoast also had to release a glue SEO plugin to merge the meta data with the AMP format.

If you wish to improve the experience, install this plugin. It comes with better reviews and more functionality. It already has Yoast support built into it, so you can directly optimize the AMP pages for search engine optimization. In order to work, this plugin requires the default AMP plugin mentioned.

The plugins can be installed in any order.

To install a WordPress plugin, login into your WP Dashboard, click on Plugins on the left and then on Add new plugin. Search for the plugin name, click Install and then Activate.

After installing them, you should be able to access the accelerated version of your pages by typing /amp after any URL on your WordPress website.

3.2 How to Install AMP on Drupal

Drupal also has its own plugin for AMP pages. If you wish to install it, you can get the plugin here. The archives with different versions of the module are towards the bottom of the page.

To install a plugin on Drupal, simply go to the Extend section on your Dashboard. Then, click Install new module. You can either download the tar.gz file from the link above and upload it into the Dashboard, or you can right click, copy link address, and paste it into the Dashboard.

3.3 How to Install AMP on Joomla

Joomla also has a number of available extensions for implementing Google AMP. Head over to https://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/ and search for AMP.

There are multiple ways of installing the extension. You can download it from the website and then upload it into your Joomla Control Panel, click on Extensions and the Extension Manager.

3.4 How to Install AMP on Concrete5

Even the new uprising Concrete5 has its own module for AMP pages. It is developed by hissy on GitHub. This module is still in beta. It should be tested on a development version of the website first.

Installing it is a little bit more complicated, as you will need access to your server’s command prompt. This can be done by logging into your cPanel and searching for SSH (Secure Shell). If you don’t have SSH access, your hosting provider may or may not provide you with it. Contact the hosting provider’s support department for information.

Then, simply run the following command lines into your command prompt. Enter the lines one at a time, and press the Enter key after each line.

$ cd ./packages $ git clone [email protected]:hissy/concrete5-amp.git amp $ cd ../ $ ./concrete/bin/concrete5 c5:package-install amp

After doing so, you can access the following URL from the dashboard:

/index.php/dashboard/system/seo/amp

Accessing it will lead you to the module setup page. Select the page types you want to activate AMP on. Then, insert your Analytics ID. This is optional. Click save, and you’re done!

If you wish to customize the AMP design template, you can copy the package and files from packages/themes/amp to application/themes/amp.

3.5 AMP for Magento and OpenCart

The two most popular eCommerce CMSs also have their modules for the Accelerated Mobile Pages.

These are fairly complex plugins, and I have only been able to find paid versions in the top results of my searches.

3.6 Custom AMP Implementation

If you’re not using one of the popular CMS platforms there, things aren’t that easy. Ideally, you should outsource this to a group of experienced programmers. If you have a custom platform, you probably already have a team.

But if you’re willing to do this yourself, the whole documentation on the AMP Project Website is a must read.

In this article, we will cover only the most important parts, and the ones related to SEO.

Remember that the AMP HTML is a lot more limited. It has many restrictions. Elements must be placed in a very specific order, otherwise, the format won’t be valid.

Here is the most basic accelerated mobile webpage, the classic “Hello, World!”.

In order for an AMP HTML to be valid, we must correctly insert all required mark-ups.

For example, the document must begin with

<!doctype html>

. The document must also contain the

top level tag. You can also use

. While in regular HTML the

<head>

and

<body>

tags are optional, they are required in AMP HTML.

You must also include the link in the AMP JS file using

https://cdn.ampproject.org/v0.js

. This JS loads everything you need in order for the AMP HTML page to work properly.

The

<head>

tag must also contain a

. Remember that the canonical tag is very important, as it tells Google which version should be used for indexing and organic search rankings.

The CSS boilerplate content is also mandatory. You can use the

tag to add diversity to your website. The whole supported CSS documentation can be found here.

Another critical thing is the

. Without it, Google won’t even know your website has an AMP page and it won’t display it. You should place this in the full version of your site (mobile or responsive).

Without rel=”amphtml” Google won’t discover the accelerated version of your page. Place it accordingly in the original version of your webpage.

How to Add Forms in Google AMP

As mentioned before in the beginning of this article, the developer team at AMP worked hard to keep improving the mark-up.

At first, forms were not available in the AMP HTML so people feared that they will not be able to generate any kind of leads anymore.

A workaround, consisting in an iFrame hack was available. Today, AMP allows you to use the

<form>

and

<input>

tags. For the document to be valid, the following script is required:
