"SYNOD URGES Separate Jails FOR YOUTHS," Vancouver Sun. September 20, 1934. Page 5. ---- By A. J. MCKENNA Canadian Press Staff Writer ---- MONTREAL, Sept. 20. Canada should segregate her youthful criminal offenders during both trial and prison terms, the Synod of the Church of England decided Wednesday.
On motion of Magistrate J. E. Jones, Toronto, a resolution was passed urging the Parliament of Canada to provide separate trials for boys between 16 and 21 years of age and separate penal institutions, similar to the Borsal system in England, where possible.
It was certainly the younger offenders to whom attention should be directed, said Rt. Rev. Sovereign, Bishop of Athabasca, formerly of Vancouver, В.С. "There are few grey-haired men in our penitentiaries now," he declared. "They are boys, many of them about 18 years old."
Sterilization for certain types of criminals was advocated by Rt. Rev. G. A. Wells, Bishop-elect of Cariboo.
A new department was added to the church to co-ordinate the work of the laymen and to provide for publicity, to be known as the Department of Law Work and Publicity, it was instituted on the motion of Chancellor R. V. Harris, Halifax.
Contributions to the church during 1933 were $5,272,000, although this was an increase of $51,410 over the preceding year, Rt. Rev. W. R. Adams, Bishop of Kootenay, who presented the report, pointed out it included $466,000 for the restoration fund and "There has been a reduction in the ordinary parochial and diocesan contributions."

What makes a monster really, is it the myths and history around them? Where does superheroes/villains fall on the monster spectrum? Especially mutants and aliens. Like Kurt Wagner or Groot from Marvel or J’onn and Swampthing from DC. It feels weird to call them monsters, but if I just look at them, they feel at least monster adjacent.
Gets weird for me when I start thinking about Superman (and other humanoid creatures/aliens). Like Superman feels like a vampire situation but reversed. Like they’re both human looking, has powers and abilities that makes them not human, and/or tries to be/blend in with humans, often for different reasons. Like Superman is morally good and vamps tend not to be, there are universe where Superman is evil tho.
I also have wonder about like the monster “classification” (lack of a better term) for orc women who are just hot human woman but green, especially when the male counterpart is very not human looking. Or where humanoid celestials, cosmic horror celestials, god(s), both from fiction and real life myth, and still practiced religions fall on the spectrum. I bring celestials up, cuz I feel demons/devils are solidly in the monster realm, my opinion/observation of course.
Probably a lot of venn-diagrams happening. This has probably already been a conversation topic on here, but love to hear your input. Sorry for long maybe incoherent ask. Kinda brewed on this for a while.
Monsters are a difficult category because they are a bit of a paradox. Defining them can be slippery because they often defy categorical neatness; take zombies for example—they are the living dead! Monster theorist Jeffrey Jerome Cohen wrote about this in his 7 Theses in which he discusses how we understand the monster, and conceive of them, through cultural moments. His 7 Theses list as such:
The monsters body is a cultural body
The monster always escapes
The monster is the harbinger of category crisis
The monster dwells at the gates of difference
The monster polices the borders of the possible
Fear of the monster is really a kind of desire
The monster stands at the threshold of becoming
Overwhelmingly, monsters are cultural bodies—that is, they are reflections of societies fears, transgressions, anxieties, etc. They speak of that which we Other, ostracize, and seek to distance ourselves from, but cannot leave alone! To me, monsters (good ones at least) should speak to something within ourselves, something that disturbs or unruffles us. The Latin term “monstrum” for example means to warn, remind, or instruct—it is an omen, a portent; monsters are that which threatens our norms, our comforts, and should reveal to us like a mirror that which speaks to our inner being.
Fear and desire are not neutral, and thus, so too monsters cannot be neutral either in their conceptions. Take your ex of female orcs being sexy women who are just green vs male orcs who are ugly: this to me speaks to heteronormative and patriarchal gendered standards reflected within monstrosity (and to dig deeper, often racial stereotypes as well!). That even in monstrosity, which is supposed to represent that which exists outside of our understood norms, monstrous women must still maintain patriarchal standards of attractiveness!
This is a lot of yapping, but all of this is to say that monstrosity in its categorization is not just fickle, and fluctuating, but subjective as well! Take the Greek Gods for example, or any old god—one perhaps wouldn’t necessarily constitute them as monsters, but to me they could absolutely fall within that category if we follow the 7 theses! And then there’s the fact that even pantheon monsters aren’t always necessarily given the term monsters automatically: many people and academics, for example, don’t consider Twilight vampires as monsters (a great piece on this is Kelly Budruweit’s piece Twilight's Heteronormative Reversal of the Monstrous: Utopia and the Gothic Design)!
Anyway I’m sorry if I poorly answered your question and the rambling 😭 I think the joy of monstrosity for me is getting to have these convos about what constitutes a monster because it’s all fun and it’s a great way to delve into the theory of monstrosity and how we culturally define them!

Yes Gwen, decline his offer!!
He's going to make something happen, isn't he?
Yes GWEN TELL HIM OFF!!
Theories:
Dr. Welling WAS in another statement (TMAGP21), he was the one to submit the calculations for the "only good" dome/world/utopia.
The interviewer was definitely marked by the Eye, judging how the statement is like those in TMA, but they seem to have to ask more questions to get the answers they want. I wonder if this was Gertrude since, from what we heard in TMA, that seems to match her style of live/recorded statements.
The statement itself seems to have a culmination of Spiral and Lonley elements. Perhaps it is a new fear classification, like the 'Deep' the dead woman described in TMAGP 15 - Well Run.
For Colin's notebook, he was clearly paranoid, and I think the codes he wrote in was Alchemy. Celia seems to be playing dumb and not really willing to help, which supports my theory that she pushed Sam and needs him to stay for "balance" sake. This was her only goal and while she does like Alice and Gwen, she doesn't care about them to enough to get involved in the Horrors.
For Gwen's meeting, I think Augustus sent that email to Starkwell. It would make sense: no more externals/chaos, but they get someone on the inside to corrupt Gwen. Judging Lena's prioritization of safety and her very clear actions to NOT get employees involved with Externals, Starkwell has to be corrupted in some way, possibly working for the Institute (or what's left of it, anyway) or her bosses. They are dangerous, and I really hope Gwen won't get involved with them.
I really hope Lena is ok now that she is seemingly off the grid. I think she is going to get the Gertude treatment for a little while at least, where all the strange/disorganized things she did (at least, that's how Gwen views it) will be reveales to have been extremely helpful once Gwen undos them. This is not to say Gwen is going to be Jon and Lena will be Gertude, but I think that their roles will be similar for a little while. I'm really hoping Lena comes back to knock some sense into the OIAR crew and help them stop whatever is going on.
No bingo card update because it's still the same lol.

WIP Wednesday - Entrance Exam
So, obviously, when writing an MHA rewrite, one of the major things everyone wants to rewrite is the Entrance Exam, but tbh, I often feel like in rewriting it to make it "more fair" the point is kind of lost. Of course it's not fair, of course it focuses on combat and strong quirks, that's literally the problem with hero society that keeps coming up in series. Hero society focuses on strong, flashy quirks and combat. That's the point. If you "fix" it too much, you lose all the flaws in society we're trying to talk about, and UA becomes this perfect utopia, the only place where society's issues don't exist, even more than it already is. So, I'm not looking to change too much. And as part of my challenge in writing this, I also don't want to change too much about the basic building blocks, especially early on. So, if you're here looking for a total overhaul of the Entrance Exam, that's not this, but I do alter things, and since pre-UA is a much bigger part of this story, I do want to focus on it. Someone once asked if I was doing this as an anime, how would I pace is, and yeah, I'd have pre-UA training arc be S1 ending with them starting into UA. It's important. So, here we go:
First of all, a little housekeeping:
UA is likely a private school. Assuming that Japan hasn't totally changed in the MHA universe, all vocational/specialist school are private, even if they're owned by the government, that's just how classifications in Japan work.
However private doesn't necessarily mean expensive, or better. There are plenty of cheap private school, particularly vocational schools, and there are schools that are considered "the one you buy your way into if you didn't pass the exams for the public school".
They're also notoriously shady when it comes to entrance exams and who they let in. Everyone knows they don't have to apply any rules they don't want and don't answer to anyone (this is sorta important later). Did you know there are still some private schools that sort you by a picture of yourself before anything else about you, to make sure you "fit the school's images".
Lots of private school reward you for applying only to them, things like lower pass marks on the exam, or preferential treatment. This probably explains why so many UA students only applied to UA and so went into the GenEd.
OK! Moving onto the actual exam:
So, the sheer numbers on the entrance exam. Depending on which number you take (canon gives us a few) there's between 12,000 and 20,000 applicants, which would mean about 1,500ish students per battle ground, but that's kind of ridiculous, and I imagine that wasn't the intended take away (us writers are known for sucking at maths, after all). So, either the exams run several rounds in a day, or that's the first number of applicants, not the number than went to the practical exam. That's the one we're going with here. So 20,00 applicants send in application forms, probably very early in the year, given how the numbers.
Related to this, many students only apply to UA, as mentioned above. This is pretty common in Japan, because many private schools give you preferential treatment in exams if you're only applying to them, and a lot of school synchronise their exams so that you can't say you've only applied to one school and take an exam at a different school as well. This helps make sure you get first dibs on the best talent. So, in this version, UA encourages you to only apply to them, but you're encouraged to apply to more than course, and if you fail a specialist course, you're automatically considered for general studies. And if you fail the recommendation exam, you go to the general admittance exam (this is what we're doing with Iida, and what I imagine is the reason for an Iida Family kid to not be in on recommendation).
So, everyone has applied, and UA application process is basically a year long process. While Midoriya is training and Bakugou is recovering from Stain, they also have to be doing the application process. This starts local. Probably the nearest decently sized city, where a school or town hall or maybe hero agency welcomes in dozens of candidates under the watch of local heroes to do basic academic tests. These aren't advanced stuff, except maybe in things you actually need for heroics like languages and maths, but I think at this early stage the cut off is just slightly above average. Then basic fitness tests, the sort you have at school, again just to make sure that applicants are slightly above average, because even if you're a quirk based hero, you have to be on your feet and running a lot as a hero, and if you want to be a hero proving you've been preparing, and at least aren't unfit is important. These exams are just sort of the baseline of are you average and prepared for UA's hard course load.
Summer, this is when most schools in Japan have their recommendation exams, so we'll go with that here. Recommendation exams are even more shady than regular private exams, and everyone knows they're basically a farce. Essentially, recommendations exams are easier, because you have something the school wants, so they lower the bar. Recommendations are like 99% your vibes in an interview and 1% exam. If they want you, they will bend every rule, that they make and do not have to disclose, to have you at the school. Academic exams are easier, and the practical exam would be too.
So, I'm still considering having Inasa in UA, because I just kinda love Inasa, tbh, but that is kinda up in the air, because I also was thinking I'd just have schools interact more. But, as mentioned above, I want this to be Iida's backstory here. I'm pretty sure I'm going to actually show all this in Shouto's pov. So we can see the process and see Iida, Inasa and Momo, and actually see Tokage and Honenuki doing their thing, and maybe some others. And, I'm also pretty sure (like 99%) that I want this to be where Shouto throws his exam. He straight up tells Nedzu he doesn't want this spot and wants to earn it in the general admission exam (because fuck you, and your recommendation, dad!) maybe even giving Iida the recommendation spot through that.
The summer would also be when the more difficult exams happen for the general admission applicants, at UA since the school is out for the summer. This is more serious exams, doing assault courses and more difficult exams in things like languages and maths, and also essays on things like ethics and marketing.
This is where the recommendation failures merge with general admissions. Those who made it though get a video camera and a winter project to create their costume by hand, or by buying things off of the shelves, in the style of old fashioned heroes, and record themselves doing it and explaining it, and to write up course work on how they eventually want to look, what their hero ideals are, all that sort of good stuff. This is where those designs you've seen me posting come in. This is also where potential Aldera!Kirishima plans come in. There's an entire half formed plot here about Mina and Kirishima being split in their third year of middle school as Kirishima moves away, and being split at UA, meaning Mina hears all this stuff about Bakugou from Midoriya, while Kirishima is already friends with Bakugou, and some conflict there. Bakugou is already further along his arc, and Kirishima standing up for Midoriya gets him along his arc, and one of the best things for Bakugou at UA was peers he liked and respected (to an extent at the start mostly just respected their power but you know, it did the job) guiding him, so Kirishima being there to push him into better behaviours earlier would be nice. Some bonding with them working on outfits together, while Midoriya gets to show off his adorable best girl mom helping him making his. These costumes are then worn for the Entrance Exam, and their course work is given to a random Business Studies applicant for their exam, to explain how they'd market them.
The Entrance Exam. The big one! I'm not really changing anything major about it, more giving it more context and expanding it. I want to make it clear that the exam is not the same every year. I think if you fought robots every year, all you'd need is someone going "how was it" "yeah, we fought robots" to their family, and there will be internet rumours, someone online going "my brother applied a few years ago and he said they fought robots". I think it's more likely there's a handful of exams that they rotate through each year depending on what sort of heroes are wanted at the moment. This year it's robots because battle heroes are on the rise, but some years they've got more rescue orientated exams or speed focused exams. I want to show the candidates preparing and going through like rumours on the internet and old exams.
The rescue points will be there, but they will be flagged early. As mentioned, private schools are known to be sketchy about entrance requirements. I want UA to want to appear above board (one of my frustrations with UA is how they suck at putting their reputation above the kids, but also suck at putting the kids first, they just make stupid decisions that do neither thing well) so if people find out there's a panel of judges giving out secrets points based on someone's vibes that can get Midoriya into the top ten while failing the actual mission completely, that screams "we wanted him so just gave him lots of points" and adds to the bitterness of people like Shinsou because Midoriya has a flashy combat based quirk, of course they want him and bent the rules to get him in, and UA wants to at least appear better than that. So I want them to acknowledge at the start that there are bonus points available, but we're not calling them rescue points, or explaining how to get them, just there is extra credit decided by a panel. Transparency, or at least the appearance of.
This is also why I hate the idea of things like actors or mannequins in this exam. If the point is to test their spirit, putting obvious "save me I'm worth bonus points" things in the arena is stupid. The rescue points were secret, because it was a secret test of character. Secret. To stop people like Iida going "well obviously I would have saved Uraraka if I'd known we'd get points for it" doing just that. Of course if people realise they gets points for saving people, they'll all be trying to do it because they get points for it, not because it's the right thing to do. Then it's not a test of character, of who will go out of their way to save people, but a test of who can follow the exam's outline. So, to fix this, and also to fix the "what about Uraraka if Izuku hadn't been there" issue, second year students are in the exam as fake applicants. For this one, it would be people like Nejire, she's there pretending to be useless and afraid of the robots and constantly needing saving because she's so clumsy, but she's strong enough that she can take care of herself it she's not saved, and also could step in if someone else was in serious danger.
Midoriya's role here is basically the same, I don't mind his story here at all, (if you notice that's a running theme, it's because I think Midoriya in general is mostly ok and just need tweaking, and it's the world around him that needs the effort and time to help him).
I want to acknowledge Bakugou's actions here a little more, and that what he's doing is basically exactly what he does on a lot of missions: crowd control and suppression. It's most obvious in World Heroes I think, but Bakugou's role, a lot of the time, is to handle the weak, but many, mooks, something sidekicks probably do all the time. And this is what he does in the Entrance Exam, lure away the robots from the crowd, thins the numbers, and leaves the bigger targets everyone else is after to the others. That said, I do find it a little ridiculous, that I'm expected to believe Bakugou didn't go after the 0 pointer. Bakugou likes to prove himself, he likes a challenge, you really expect me to believe he didn't think that robot was there for a reason, he's hotheaded not stupid, and wouldn't fight it just because it's a big ass villain to fight and prove his strength? Really? So, either Bakugou does go after the 0 pointer, or I make a point that Bakugou makes a point of following the mission brief and not deviating (something with both good and bad points irl).
If I do have Shouto in the general admittance exam, this is also where he comes in. I want Shouto at the top of the exams, but only by a point or two, and also without rescue points. I think this nicely kicks off more of the Shouto and Bakugou rivalry, sees Bakugou properly challenged by someone his own age for the first time, but also highlights something we often forget about especially early Shouto: he's reckless and prone to overkill, in a slightly different way to Bakugou. While Bakugou mostly gets set off by Midoriya, think about things like Shouto freezing the entire building, threatening to kill the villains at USJ and almost freezing Hagakure, freezing the robots in a way that would have seriously harmed someone if it hadn't been Kirishima and Tetsutetsu they fell on, icing Sero and putting the audience in danger, his fight with Midoriya putting the audience in danger, everything about Stain and Kamino, this is literally why he failed the license exam. Shouto doesn't play by the rules and doesn't really think about the consequences, especially when emotional, especially early on, and I want to really look at that. He and Bakugou have the potential to be really interesting reflections of each other either side of Midoriya, and I want to lean into that more. Again, Shouto is very likely to also go for the 0 pointer, just to prove he can.
I have some love/hate for how Midoriya gets 0 villain points. I don't think I want to change it, but maybe I do want to explore it. These robots, especially the 1 pointers, they're flimsy. We see in the obstacle race, they're so flimsy they can break themselves with their own momentum. Dodging them can break them. So I do want to look at that.
Ok, I think that's about it for the Entrance Exam itself.

In Shin Sekai Yori, there are a lot of themes depicting sacrificing the self for the whole, imperfect utopias, and social hierarchy.
In episode 1, the students are assigned to read out loud a story that depicted a man being chased by an evil spirit. If the man were to escape back in to his village, he would surely bring the evil spirit with him and the spirit would eventually completely destroy his village. While escaping on a rope bridge over a chasm, he decides to cut the bridge so the spirit would not harm his village, taking himself down with it too. The lesson the story taught to the children was that the individual should sacrifice themselves for the greater good, which became a predominant theme surrounding how Shin Sekai Yori’s society works. It reflected the role that automatic self-destruction in humans with psychokinesis had, since its goal is to kill off a human who becomes destructive towards other people, therefore preventing the death of others by killing the individual.
The theme of an imperfect utopia is shown in episode 4 when the children discover Minoshiro during summer camp and it reveals to them the history of human society from when psychokinesis was discovered until the creation of their current society. The children are traumatized once they hear that their history is stained with blood and gruesome, revealing that the society they’ve been taught by all their adult authority figures was not pure but in fact brutal. However, authorities still attempt to maintain this falsehood that their society is a utopia by saying everything the Minoshiro taught them was a lie.
Social hierarchy is highlighted by the classification of queerats as sub-human, even though they are essentially genetically modified humans who couldn’t develop telekinetic powers. This distain for queerats is highlighted by a flashback of when a younger Saki was talking to her dad about them. Her dad warns her not to go near them, and that they’ve been kept out of view from children on purpose because queerats could possibly corrupt them, even though it was later found out that they’re descendants of humans too.

EARTH-6648.ZENNLA
Field Report.
FILE NO. EARTH-6648.ZENNLA
Status: Terminal Serenity. POST-COSMIC EVENT CALM
Classification: STARFALL CLASS. INTERPLANETARY GRAVEFIELD
Access Level: Echo-Class Only with Celestial Clearance
INFORMATION
Earth-6648.ZENNLA is a planetary echo of a lost utopia, a world of impossible beauty, now draped in silence. This Zenn-La survived Galactus. Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer, made the ultimate bargain: he did not just offer servitude, he offered remembrance. Galactus fed, then forgot. Zenn-La was spared but not untouched. Time does drifts here. Emotion echoes louder than sound. Zenn-La exists in a perpetual state of mourning, preserved through cosmic stasis, overseen by the Silver Architect himself. It is a planet where every blade of grass remembers, every star holds vigil. It is not dead but no longer living.
VISUAL PROFILE
A silver-blue world where oceans gleam like liquid glass. The sky has no sun, only the reflection of distant galaxies. Cities carved from crystalline memory float gently above land. The ground is soft, as if unwilling to bruise. Music hums from the soil, melodies composed of regret. The Silver Surfer glides endlessly across the sky no destination, only orbit. Towers flicker like mirages, some formed from Norrin Radd’s memories, others from the ghosts of choices unmade. It is heartbreak made architecture.
HISTORICAL NOTES
Unlike other iterations, Earth-6648.ZENNLA never fell to Galactus’ hunger. Norrin Radd offered not just service, but his eternal emotional resonance allowing Galactus to siphon from his memory, his guilt, his longing. This act imbued Zenn-La with a psychic shield: any who step on its soil feel its grief. Galactus departed, uninterested in returning to a planet that now fed only on sorrow. Zenn-La transformed into a Memory Sanctum, a cosmic place of silence. No invasions. No evolution. Just stillness. Over millennia, its people entered stasis, becoming Dream-Stones living crystals storing personal universes. Norrin remained, haunted guardian of a paradise he could never leave, yet could never truly inhabit.
CURRENT CONDITIONS
Climate: Perpetually calm. Wind moves like breath, not force. Ambient air contains low-level psionic waves.
Inhabitants: All original Zenn-Lavians in stasis. No active biological movement.
Temporal Drift: Heavy. Time is non-linear, loops in on emotional echoes.
Notable Features:
Sea of Stilllight: Ocean of frozen emotion; touching it may replay personal trauma or joy
Harmonic Monoliths: Monuments that sing when near grief
Orbiting Library Moons: Satellites containing memories harvested by Norrin Radd; some entries are blank due to trauma erasure
The Silver Wake: Trail left by the Surfer; those who follow it too long experience recursive memories
Entire cities built of sentient crystal, responds to longing or shame
Time fractures appear as light fractures
Hazard Level: STASIS-CLASS
Emotional feedback loops may trap travelers in memory spirals
Psychic resonance field amplifies guilt, sorrow, and nostalgia
Risk of Dream-Stone imprinting. Foreign consciousness may overwrite original identity
In rare cases, planet may “echo” another universe’s trauma, creating mirror illusions of past cataclysms
KNOWN ENTITY: NORRIN RADD (THE SILVER SURFER)
Designation: The Silver Architect. The One Who Remembers.
Notes: Norrin no longer serves Galactus, but he carries the hunger still, a hunger for meaning. He is fused with Zenn-La’s memory lattice. His board is now a psychotemporal artifact, able to cross time and emotional dimensions. He speaks rarely, but his presence alters the landscape. He no longer intervenes. He observes unless the sanctity of silence is violated.
Other Known Entities:
Shalla-Bal (Crystal Form): Preserved consciousness of Norrin’s former love, contained in the Heartspire.
The Archivist: Non-corporeal presence managing memory flow across the moon-libraries. Possibly a shard of Norrin’s subconscious
Orryx the Forgotten: Cosmic pilgrim who tried to steal Zenn-La’s silence; now trapped in eternal loop of being remembered and erased
CURRENT STATUS
Stable. Quiet. Orbiting elegy. Surveillance satellites require no cloaking; Norrin allows observation, but not inquiry. Echo agents seeking entry must approach with intent free of conquest, extraction, or absolution. Those who fail this test will not be punished. They will simply be remembered too much.
O.R.A.C.L.E. VERDICT
SINGULARITY RESERVE. Earth-6648.ZENNLA must remain untouched. Its existence maintains multiversal emotional balance. A fail-safe for grief. O.R.A.C.L.E. recognizes its passive function as an Empathic Locus. Echo-Class travelers may use Zenn-La for psychic centering, but prolonged stays require resonance dampeners. Interference is not permitted. Redemption is not requested.

Cleanroom Solutions: Ensuring Quality and Precision across Industries

Cleanrooms play a pivotal role in various industries where maintaining a controlled environment is crucial for the success of operations. They are essential for industries like manufacturing, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and even agriculture and food production. The key to effective cleanroom operations lies in their design, construction, and ongoing maintenance to meet the required standards. Companies must ensure their cleanrooms meet strict regulatory standards, preventing contamination and ensuring product quality. In this regard, Utopia stands as a leader in the cleanroom industry, delivering tailored solutions that meet the diverse needs of its clients.
Understanding Cleanrooms
A cleanroom is a highly controlled environment where the concentration of airborne particles, temperature, infection control, humidity, and other variables are precisely monitored. This control ensures that the risk of contamination is minimized, allowing sensitive manufacturing processes to take place without external interference. Cleanrooms are classified by the number of particles per cubic meter of air, following international standards such as ISO 14644–1 and US FED Standard 209E.
The classification levels include Class 1, 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 (10K), and 100,000 (100K). For instance, in a Class 1 cleanroom, no more than one particle larger than 0.5 microns is permitted per cubic foot of air. As the classification number increases, the allowable concentration of airborne particles also increases. The stricter the classification, the higher the requirement for cleanroom design and maintenance.
Utopia: Leading Cleanroom Design and Construction
With years of expertise in cleanroom solutions, Utopia has established itself as a trusted name in the industry, specializing in the design and construction of cleanrooms across multiple sectors. “However much large investors hoped for an immediate return on their subscriptions to exposition stock, it became increasingly apparent that expositions rarely returned a dividend. For large investors, however, the goal was not immediate profit, but long-range gain for their regional, national, and international economic interests. On another level, exposition promoters also saw the fairs as vehicles for maintaining, or raising, their own status as regional or national leaders and for winning broad acceptance across class lines for their priorities and their decision-making authority.
“To achieve these ends, the directors turned to the federal government for assistance, thus continuing to cement the alliance between federal power and industrial capitalism that had been institutionalized in the United States since the 1860s. For each of the expositions, Congress appropriated funds, thus assuring the exposition directors of exhibits from various government departments and of the participation of government specialists to oversee the installation and arrangement of displays. Without the aid of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Bureau of Insular Affairs, for example, the Indian Congress at the Omaha exposition and the Philippine Reservation at the Saint Louis fair would never have existed.
“The continuing involvement of experts from the Smithsonian Institution in providing exhibits, advice, and display classifications also confirmed the intermeshing of upper-class purpose and federal power. Such eminent Smithsonian scientists as Spencer F. Baird, Otis Mason, G. Brown Goode, W J McGee, and Aleš Hrdlička were not industrial capitalists. But they were immersed in the ethic of industrial capitalism; they were its high priests. Their labors produced an intellectual scaffolding for the cumulative symbolic universe under construction at the fairs.
“This symbolic construct centered on the interpenetration of Darwinian theories about racial development and utopian dreams about America's material and national progress. Central to the presentation of this constellation of ideas as a valid interpretation of social reality were ethnological exhibits furnished by both reputable anthropologists and well-financed showmen. Anthropological attractions consisting of cultural artifacts, lay-figure groupings of ‘primitive types,’ and selected nonwhites living in ethnological villages along the midways—charted a course of racial progress toward an image of utopia that was reflected in the main exposition buildings.”

"Canada May Make Manitoba Prison Into New "Alcatraz"," The Province (Vancouver). February 2, 1938. Page 1. --- By CHARLES BISHOP |(From The Daily Province Ottawa Bureau. Copyright by Southam Publishing Co. Ltd.) ---- ΟTTAWA, Feb. 2. - A Canadian equivalent to the United States Alcatraz Island penitentiary may develop from the report of the royal commission on penitentiaries, whose members are now engaged, industriously, in making recommendations of reform.
One of the things which is more than likely to be emphasized is the need of segregation to a greater extent than ever before.
Alcatraz Island in California is known to the criminal classes of the United States as no pleasant place in which to live. Taken there and treated with proper regard to their dangerous type, the worst of convicts come from all over the United States.
Such types are not unknown in Canadian penitentiaries. It is said that the commission is impressed, not only with the need of greater segregation of first offenders from the recidivist criminals, but also of the need of detaching the "hardest boiled" ones from those not so hard.
The penitentiary at Stony Mountain, Manitoba, may possibly house this particular company.
It would also be regarded as helpful if all the jails and reforma-tories, as well as the penitentiaries, were under one administrative body, so that classification would be complete. Constitutionally there appears no particular reason for the existing division of authority, federal and provincial, but the usage is very definite. If changes were made it would of course have to be by common consent.
One of the things to be dealt with is the "after care" of convicts following their release. Many stories have been related of such people being encouraged to return to crime because of getting the "cold shoulder" or losing jobs, once it became known that they had served a prison term.

T-02-152 (Drowning Memory)

Title: Drowning Memory
Subject Classification: T-02-152
Attack Type: Pale
Risk Level: Zayin
Description: The abnormality takes the form of what appears to be a young humanoid sea butterfly, around 17 years old. She is constantly sitting in front of a small lake, gazing upon the waters sadly. When spoken to, she will reminisce about some of their friends and the memories they shared together. Some can’t help but feel the abnormality’s sadness, feeling a sense of sorrow swallow them as well. The abnormality tends to sing, the song being very sad yet almost nostalgic. However, this song will lead anyone who listens into a trance. It is theorized that these people live out an impactful part of their childhood, whether it be good or bad. Symptoms of this include glazed-over eyes, a constant stream of tears, and a blank expression on the face.
Quote: “A longing memory of a time forgotten, cursed to try an recall it”
Extra:
Based on the song “Vocaloid Utopia”
Flavor Text:
- “…I miss them…”
- “Drowning Memory stared off into the lake, reminiscing on old memories.”
- “<name> could feel tears prick at their eyes”
- “We would do so much together… then I was separated from them…” she looked to the ground “What I loved most about our time was when we sang together…”
- “<name> started to remember their childhood”
- “What will I be singing in 100 years?”
- “Thank you. Thank you for everything until now”

It seems that nobody has ever really been able to agree on what genre Faction Paradox is - it could arguably fit into fantasy, sci-fi, weird fiction, magical realism, or a billion other categories. I think the closest I've ever seen someone get was classifying it as historical fiction. However, with its emphasis on differing perspectives - for example, chapter 2 of the first part of Warring States shows an account of an expedition into a Chinese tomb by the British archaeologist who lead the expedition while chapter 2 of the second part shows an account of the same expedition by a Chinese worker, and Warlords of Utopia is told in the first person to show the mindset of a citizen of Roma I - and on history as a structure - history being imposed on the Spiral Politic by the Homeworld maps fairly nicely to the fact that, in real life, history isn't just the past, it's the narrative around the past, and the primary view of history can be seen as being imposed on the rest of the world by Europe - I think the best genre classification for FP is historiographical fiction.

So you're brand new to Tumblr: A primer for former Twitter users.
Note: This guide is aimed at users who have little to no experience with Tumblr, it was originally envisioned to help my vtuber friends but was written to be a general help for all users. It is not a comprehensive guide or tutorial, rather a tool to help familiarize yourself with the core features of tumblr, as well as the terms you’ll be encountering.
First and foremost let's get something out of the way, do not treat Tumblr like it's Twitter. It's not. Tricks you learned on Twitter may or may not work here but the audience and flow of your dashboard are going to be very different. Tumblr is primarily a slower site than Twitter. I don't necessarily mean that literally though that can be true, but in that posts get disseminated in a much slower way here, the average long term Tumblr user will not see your posts until someone they follow reblogs them, that's because while Tumblr does promote posts the user base has developed many a tool to curate the site to make their browsing experience better. We'll get to that later, but the point I'm trying to get at here is not to lose heart if your content doesn't get much engagement early on. That said sustainable growth is still possible here, but it's going to require some tweaks to how you do things.
Two real quick terms I will be using throughout this post, I will include more terms towards the end of this post but these two will be used throughout so we’ll define them here: Dashboard: Sometimes referred to as your Dash is the term for the front page of your tumblr. Basically your timeline, it is where all the content you receive will end up. Your dash is heavily influenced by who you follow, how many people you follow and how often they post. Most people’s dashes are in chronological order and when they follow new blogs the new blog’s posts will be added in order to their dash, meaning they may not see content from new blogs right away but they will be sprinkled into their dashboard as they scroll. Most people will have recommended, promoted etc. posts turned off and it’s honestly the recommended way to use tumblr at this point. Blogs: Each user’s page. In order to join tumblr you make a blog. How much each user treats their blog like an actual blog will depend on the user but it is the term used.
Alright let's start with the basics:
What is Tumblr's primary audience?
While like any site there will be people of all stripes here Tumblr largely functions as a gathering hub for Fandom and politics, in my experience the user base tends to skew left but it's certainly not just for leftists... Alas there is no utopia of that kind online. In general content that feeds into those broad demographics will have a higher chance of doing decently and due to Tumblr's tagging system acting more as a classification system you can get quite insular in the communities you make content for.
What type of content will do well here?
So aside from the above mentioned broad categories, due to the way content is shared on this site you want your content to, as much as possible, avoid being time sensitive. While it's absolutely possible to have time sensitive announcements and the like do decently on Tumblr, for long term sustainable growth you want at least some of your original content to be something that can be reblogged at a users leisure. Additionally I highly recommend reblogging other's works, embrace the Fandom nature of the site, users are more likely to follow someone who's interests align with theirs in what they're already using this site for. The more users following you directly the less steps it'll take to get eyes on your content since it'll show up on their dashboards from you directly, additionally they may reblog it from you disseminating it further. Find some shit you enjoy and follow some people who share it!
Any big fauxpas?
Reposting. That and art theft. If you were a good person on Twitter who hated those things already then you'll be good, but due to the nature of Tumblr's reblog system it's often seen as bad form to screenshot posts from around Tumblr to post them on your own blog. Due to the nature of replies being part of reblogs you can easily share an amusing exchange just by reblogging the last reply you want to share and the whole conversation will be boosted to your dash.
Note: Some blogs may post Screencaps of old no longer visible Tumblr posts for archival reasons, additionally there are some blogs that share art from outside sources with permission, these are generally viewed as totally fine so use context clues.
What about networking?
This is going to be the biggest difference between Twitter and Tumblr. While I will never claim Twitter was the perfect networking tool it is admittedly much better than Tumblr. Tumblr doesn't explicitly harm networking but frankly it just doesn't have the same audience for it as Twitter does and the tools for connecting with others are more rigid. That said you absolutely can network on Tumblr, just expect it'll probably be more awkward.
Okay let's get more granular and start breaking down several of the systems you'll want to familiarize yourself with here:
Reblogs:
Like retweets but with the ability to include your own commentary or not built into the same button. This is your primary way of sharing content already on tumblr. Use it at your leisure, be aware there is a daily post limit but unless you're retweeting everything that crosses your dash you likely won't hit it most days. It's considered bad form to remove the original posters commentary, which is possible with certain tools I'll recommend later. Don't do that, especially on art. You may also directly comment on something while sharing it using this system.
Blaze:
Blazing is a feature implemented after my initial time here that said it's basically paid promotional posts, you pay to have a post "blazed" onto people's dashboards and then they harass you about it. Based off of the culture on Tumblr I cannot say if doing this will or will not cause some people to harass you but posting literally anything will make someone harass you so do you.
Likes:
Unlike likes on Twitter likes on Tumblr are for you, and really only you. While there are features that may share your likes with others most users will have that turned off and I recommend turning it off as well. Likes are a good, not great, way to save content for later. Personally I use likes to save stuff I want to reblog for later so I can add them to my queue... Speaking of which...
Queue:
There is, as far as I am aware, no Twitter feature that mimics the Tumblr queue. While you can schedule posts for specific times, you'll find many users who use Tumblr consistently are using the queue function. The Tumblr queue can be set up to reblog a certain number of posts within a certain time frame. This way you can be reblogging content throughout the day without actually having to reblog things every hour. I suggest playing around with the amount of posts and timing until you have a queue you feel you can maintain so you're providing a constant drip feed of reblogs.
Archive:
Your archive is a built in feature for your blog. It’s a grid view of all your posts by month and year. Some users use a blog’s archive as a way to judge if they want to follow a blog. The only way to control it is by deleting/adding posts. You don’t really need to think about yours too much, just be aware you have one.
Tagging:
Unlike Twitter's tagging system tags on Tumblr are more similar to a filing system than an algorithm boosting one specifically. That said personally I find tags on Tumblr help boost a post to the right audience much better than Twitter ever has and was the biggest feature I missed. While there is a limit on tags it's a very generous one and allows users to make sure their content has accurate tags to help the right communities see them. Use tags to your advantage. Tag broad categories and niche ones. Ex. A piece of Pokémon fan art can include both the “video games” tag and the “Pokémon” one to help people who follow both those tags find it. You can get even more granular and tag the Pokémon in the art. Use tags to sort your own blog as well, make sure to include important ones for your own content or branding. For instance including "my art" helps a follower know something is yours but also means they can search your blog for that tag and find everything you've posted with it, making it easy to find and share it from your blog. You can also set up a tags page for easier navigation. (We'll talk about pages in a bit.) It's easy to make sure you're using the same tags consistently as once you've posted once using a tag it'll auto suggest it when you start typing it the next time when on desktop, though old and hardly used tags may not be suggested, and this will not apply to tags on who's first post is still in your queue. Figure out what tags work best for you but please also do not spam unrelated tags, Tumblr is much less forgiving with that. Tumblr also allows users to track or hide posts using certain tags. This is the second feature I missed the most. Hiding posts with specific tags means a user can tailor their saftey on tumblr without having to block or unfollow people. As such it is considered good form to use tags to tag common Trigger or Content warnings as well as to add tags users ask you to for their own safety, within reason. (There is an infamous post of someone asking a space blog to tag space related photos because it gave them anxiety.) Also remember tags can have spaces.
Asks:
This will be the primary way your followers will interact with you directly. Asks are not DMs, they have a character limit and you can set whether or not users can send you asks anonymously. When you are notified of an ask you will be prompted to respond, most asks will be published to your blog directly once you've responded, it is possible to set it to a private response so only the original asker will see it, but only if they did not send it anonymously. Asks can be a great tool to let your followers interact with you, not quite directly. However they can also be used to harass users, consider the levels of security you wish to have, you may want to turn off anonymous asks to avoid people hiding behind a grey icon when harassing you, conversely some followers may only send asks if anon is turned on. You may switch anon asks on or off at any point if you need to.
Chatting:
The closest thing to DMs on Tumblr. It works, I really don’t have much to say about it.
Replies:
A feature that will be hit or miss for users, it’s not new by any stretch of the imagination at this point but wasn’t part of tumblr for a long time and so some users will use reblogs or tags for this instead. Replies are public but unlike reblogs they do not share the original post, instead the OP (and any mentioned blog) will get the notification. You can also reply to replies.
Side blogs:
Pretty much what it says on the tin. Side blogs are additional blogs that are connected to your main blog. All side blogs share the same dashboard, they can also have multiple main blogs as admins. (Which main blog is posting/reblogging something to the side blog will be visible.) Side blogs also cannot send asks. Otherwise they can do most other things your main blog can, including being password protected, having their own themes etc. It is strictly against tumblr TOS to hoard sideblog urls. You may have many side blogs for any reason but there is a point where tumblr starts to get cranky about it so be aware. I personally use them for storing resources I do not wish to reblog to my main.
Themes:
Please please please set up a custom theme for your blog. If you are reading this on my blog itself then you’re looking at my theme. It’s the custom look of your blog, it lets you make your blog into a space that reflect you and what you want to share. There are tons of themes out there, some are available to be installed directly onto your blog while others will require you to edit the html of your blog. Search around, look up tumblr themes on google, check out blogs and if they have a theme you like they will probably have a theme credit somewhere. Make your own if you got the know how (but please do check what tumblr’s current guidelines on custom themes are before you start coding away.) Setting up a custom theme has two-fold benefits. 1. You get a blog that more directly represents you and what you’re putting out there. 2. It means there’s an actual landing page for your blog. It turns your blog url into a proper url. You go from your blog being visible only in a sub-par floating bubble that’s url reads as tumblr.com/[username] and turns it into it’s own web page with [username].tumblr.com. It looks better and usually people will prefer to scroll your actual blog page and not just the floating ill-formatted box. Some pre-created themes comes with built in pages, some don’t, so onto...
Pages:
Pages are extra well, pages, on your blog. They can be used to create any number of pages you want. Each page must have a unique name from other pages on your blog, as that will be used to make the url of the page. By default pages will use the same theme as your main blog but you can also edit their html to get custom page themes. This may be useful for certain page types, such as navigations or tag pages which may have a lot of information you’d rather not force people to scroll through. Similarly to themes you can find pre-made page themes through some simple searching. Be aware that the mobile app does not see pages natively you must set up a mobile nav link, if you wish to set up a mobile navigation I recommend checking out this guide.
Search:
This is the primary function by which most people who did not have your content posted to their Dash will find you. The search function is... Well it’s something of a running joke among the community. Many new features have been added to this function over the years and most users don’t like them, so many a tool has been used to change it around. All of which is to say it can be inconsistent. The best way to utilize it is to search for tags related to what you want to see, the first 20 tags show up in search. You can also follow tags, this is a feature which once you’ve searched for a tag will add it to a list of tracked tags that will notify you when something new is posted there, making this feature useful for keeping on a rare pair or a community you want to be involved in. The first 5 tags show up in tracked tags.
The Mobile App:
Pretty much what it says on the tin. There is a tumblr mobile app. It is okay at best. Up to you if you want to use it but it is not the ideal tool for posting original content. I personally mostly use it for browsing tumblr and liking things until I can get on desktop to start actually posting/reblogging content.
Xkit:
Xkit is an outside tool designed to make tumblr a better experience. Most users use some variation of it at this point either New Xkit or Xkit Rewritten, or both. It is recommended you use at least one as it drastically changes the tumblr expereince for the better as well as just generally adds some fun things if you wish. (Such as a dashboard version of the old neko desktop cat.) That said as it is a third party tool be aware the coders do have to update it semi-regularly whenever a core piece of an extension is broken. Be nice to these coders, they’re the biggest reason this site hasn’t collapsed under it’s own weight.
Some general tips, etiquette and other resources!
Tips:
Firstly, take your time. Tumblr is a slower paced site than twitter and you do not want to burn yourself out on it by spamming it all the time. Tumblr has it’s own very unique history and culture and it may take some time at first to get all the references. (I will not explain the shoelaces thing, I’m sorry I just can’t handle the level of embarrassment it gives me.)
Reblog yourself, a lot. If you’ve got work that you want to share reblog it! Since most people have built their tumblr experience to be sans algorithm you’re going to need to refresh your works on people’s dashes frequently. For a little more in depth about that and what content you should be reblogging read this.
Use tags freely but don’t spam, but do go wild with your tags. They are there for you to categorize things, and most old school tumblr users will also use them to comment on reblogs instead of adding their own comment in the reblog. There are very few rules about how to tag but please to check out this etiquette post to make sure you’re not gonna get anon hate for it. (You will anyways.)
Etiquette:
DNIs are used pretty freely and generally accepted within reason. That said unless you put a DNI in each post people will interact with it and you’re gonna have to live with that, if you spot a DNI that applies to you, do your best to respect it within reason. (Obviously some people are gonna be racist, sexist, ablest, homophobic, transphobic, acephobic etc. Those people are twats.)
When reblogging an ask meme you wish to participate in, it’s generally considered good form to send an ask to the blog you’re reblogging from first to insure they also get to participate in the meme.
I already said this, but don’t repost!
Don’t censor triggers in your tags, this is because censoring them means someone using a tag blocker will likely still see the trigger post as it will not be caught by the blocker.

The paradise myth was therefore attached to the Caribbean’s status as a cornerstone of the European “primitive accumulation” of wealth. [...] [T]he American Eden continued to be romanticized by English poets [...]. As long as the fantasy of [...] profit and accumulation of wealth persisted, paradise discourse survived, incorporating the trope of the plantation when the age of exploration, conquest and piracy came to end and the means of production were transformed. [...] “[T]hroughout the history of the New World, the dream of paradise and the noble savage has coexisted with the history of colonization and forced labour” [...].
From the 16th century onwards, rhetoric of paradise increasingly appeared outside the context of the New World in connection with other potential “treasure-lands” - the African gold-land of Ophir, the ivory-lands of the Congo, the pearl-beds of Ceylon - anywhere European colonizers believed they could acquire raw materials [...]. Even after the 19th-century abolition of the slave-trade, colonizers employed indentured labour to run the tea plantations and pearl-diving stations of Ceylon and hired slaves from Zanzibar to travel with them into the interior of East Africa. In the rhetoric of colonization and conquest, paradise operates on various levels, as a descriptor of “new” landscapes, a plan for colonies, or an earthly kingdom [...] into which Indigenous people should be inducted [...]. Paradise discourse is confined to neither the Caribbean nor the plantation [...].
---
The beginnings of European modernity were marked by a dawning recognition of the impossibility of returning to the Golden Age [...]. However, the Renaissance also saw the proliferation of "collective fantasies” such as the Land of Cockaigne and the Fountain of Youth, and an increasing infatuation with the complicated, anti-natural aesthetic of the botanical garden. [...] Jeffrey Knapp attributes the flowering of literary utopias such as Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) and Spenser’s Faerie Queen (1590-6) as a response to the widening global framework of trade and travel and the complexities of empire. Tropical islands and colonies were used as symbolic locations on which to project the contradictions of European expansion [...].
---
The fluctuation between paradise and anti-paradise reflects the 17th-century aesthetic transition away from the mystical or supernatural towards empirical knowledge of the negative realities of the colonies and predicts the rise of scientific knowledge [...]. In the 17th century, the axis of literary interest in foreign landscapes began to shift away from the Americas towards the East [...]. Biblical and classical language remained entrenched [...] but transformed from theological signs into metaphorical shorthand for the global variety and riches unlocked by colonial expansion: paradise did not disappear, just became secularized.
The hope of discovering fabled utopias was replaced with the intention of building new utopian settlements and plantations under their name [...].
The rise of Linnaean classification dictated a further secularization of paradise discourse within the framework of natural history, as “Edenic edifices” were forged in the writing of naturalists who moved through the world like “Adam in the primordial garden,” naming and “innocently” collecting specimens (Pratt 56-7).
---
The “planetary consciousness” produced by this systemizing of nature [...] increased the mobility of paradise discourse in application to different regions and continents. As European colonial expansion accelerated, the homogenizing transformation of people, economy and nature which it catalyzed also gave rise to a myth of lost paradise, which served as a register [...] for obliterated cultures, peoples, and environments, and as a measure of the rapid ecological changes, frequently deforestation and desiccation, generated by colonizing capital.
On one hand, this myth served to suppress dissent by submerging it in melancholy, but on the other, it promoted the emergence of an imperialist environmental critique which would motivate the later establishment of colonial botanical gardens, potential Edens in which nature could be re-made.
However, the subversive potential of the “green” critique voiced through the myth of endangered paradise was defused by the extent to which growing environmental sensibilities enabled imperialism to function more efficiently by appropriating botanical knowledge and Indigenous conservation methods, thus continuing to serve the purposes of European capital.
