the raz vodello AU sucks because it's mostly used to fulfill the SashaMilla parent fantasy and also bash the aquatos in the same swing.

i've been thinking about this since yesterday and how i just loathe this AU based on the core premise it stands on.

raz in this universe becomes a mcguffin(wrong word) raz becomes/or would realistically become a completely different character so then whats the point of it being raz. huh. huh?

raz's whole character is his hero personality and his determination to become a psychonaut. his precocious, smart alec, but nice nature. if he just starts his life in the psychonauts then whats his goal here? to be a psychonaut? borrring. he just becomes a nepo baby who follows the steps of his.. mother..

speaking of her.. MILLA. the stories don't even utilize her, the """"MOTHER""" in any interesting way. the character whos surname is in the title of The Thing.

(ok i'll be real right now i've never sat down and read a single story containing this Au i've just read the tvtropes page. once. which..like. why does it exist. and i could be completely wrong and its somehow the most well written character exploration study ever but.. come on. look me in the eyes and tell me you believe that. ha. ha. ha.)

the premise just uses her stance on children in most shallow way possible. like. whatever.

Another thing. I dont like how in some variations of the story, Sasha just becomes the 'father.' like. how. Sasha and Milla aren't even together in CANON. How does adding a child make them get closer. In fact.. i think the chances of them getting together would actually be Lower because of Milla having a kid. like like like

hyperbolic joke..lol. i think sasha would be more like "he appreciates milla and would like to get closer but she's busy and i dont think its the best time."

could the premise even be interesting? idk.. not without sacrificing something. are the aquatos In or Out? is the story about the relationship between raz and milla or raz and his real family? are you trying to go for Disney's tangled or something. is he already ten in this story. how did the scenario even happen. was he kidnapped or abandoned. was be a baby or some other age. are the aquatos unrealistically dicks, dead or unaware. if he found the circus then would he want to join? either answer doesn't matter. how about while we're at it, Sashas mother never died and that orphanage never burned down.

I think the premise is flawed from the start. but.. haha.. but, I will say this. I think it's kind of interesting to see a younger raz and milla interact. her and her experience and.. idk u get it or u dont. it's kind of cute and interesting. but thats the end of story.

another problem with younger versions of raz is that you run into the problem that he's 10yrs old (that's actually crazy does anybody realize how insane that is) and a year ago he was 9 and then 8 and 7 and 6 and 5 and 4 and 3 and oh you're not fully there in the hair. are you even a character anymore. are you even the Same character anymore.

also if you make the story about milla then why does it even have to be raz? cause he’s the mc? eyeroll. i mean.. lili's right there. cough.

if its about rebonding with the aquatos then is it a story about real family vs family that took care of you? maybe u can explore that but i dont care. in the end it could demonize his real parents or milla really easily. again, not the point i want to elaborate on.

how about you pick Peak instead. Make oleander the parent

he is able to be nice to kids.

he has his whole world domination plan(adopting a kid would just mean another soldier)

his plan to train/brainwash raz and then getting attached or whatever

Some lore under the cut, I really go off on a tangent:

The scars on Damian's face and ear are from Deathstroke trying to take out his eye! His bro, Respawn, has similar ones. They quite like the fact that they match; only good thing that came of the situation tbh.

Dick was adopted by Bruce shortly before being presumed dead. The rest of family, put simply, is in shambles.

Cass has her hands full with the Batman mantle, Steph took her search for training off-continent, Tim's distancing himself as always, Jason's convinced he could find a way to bring Bruce back if he just could his hands on the body or the next best thing. That leaves Damian and Alfred as the only possible guardians for Dick, and Damian steps up to take custody.

From Dick's POV, he's learned two things: 1) Bruce was Batman, and everyone here is a vigilante! 2) If everyone's so busy, who's going to avenge his parents now?

Thus Robin becomes a thing. Dick just starts clocking in for patrol like it's normal, and Damian is like 'WHAT.' And Dick demands asks nicely that he help him take down Zucco.

Damian is successfully able to keep Dick from following him onto patrol for nearly a month. But the longer Dick's parents go without justice, the angrier he gets. Dick well and truly hates Damian for keeping him from stopping Zucco. There comes a breaking point where Dick screams at Damian, calling him a bunch of names and cursing him for existing.

For Dick, it's a violent outburst that's been in the making since his parents died. For Damian, though, it's like looking in a mirror.

Damian caves. He'll help Dick, but not before preparing him. Dick is very quick to be portray it as an equal partnership. Damian shuts that down immediately. Specifically, this is an apprenticeship. Damian will train, support and be with Dick every step of the way, but he definitely won't be an equal.

The Bats have had untrained members before. Every single one craved to be trained properly and took their time mastering their skills. Dick is headstrong, driven by revenge. That's a massive risk, and Damian has train him without Bruce's expertise in taming young overeager vigilantes.

On patrol, Damian needs to know Dick will do exactly as he says when he says it. Thus, the apprenticeship takes form as it is. Nightwing and Robin.

instead of the whole revenge-dramatic-reveal-kill-the-joker plan jason just breaks into arkam, kills the joker real fast, but somehow breaks an arm/leg/ribs/some other bone in doing so. and hes in a lot of pain, and hasn't slpet in a while and when he wakes up hes back in the manor, and bruce and dick are staring at him. bruce asks him what he's doing here and jason's pain riddled, sleep deprived brain somehow comes up with "what are you talking about? ive lived here for years?" and somehow, somehow that works. and somehow he manages to gaslight the batfam into thinking he never actually died because he doesnt want to admit that that was the best response he could come up with (and he really fucking missed them okay and no shut up, its just the first reason. really.)

this could be a good setup for misunderstandings!

The batfam all come to the conclusion that an alternate universe’s Jason must have accidentally traveled to their world.

None of them are in a hurry to make him go back. On the contrary, they all collectively try to adjust their world around “Jason’s true reality”.

Meaning if Jason told them about that time he got a C- in Literature once (he always had A’s) the others would just nod along, saying they “remember”.

They really don’t want to lose Jason again.

There's something about the rare strongman!Bruce fanart I find that makes me insane. Then I started thinking about it and like? Bruce in the circus would be so good? and really easy to incorporate into a timeline like:

Imagine Bruce runs away at 15

He has just come back from being “transferred” to Gotham Academy from a boarding school

This is accompanied by Alfred expressing his disappointment. Bruce had already been thinking about being a burden and leaving and while in the main timeline he waits til graduating he kinda snaps

He comes across the circus and through means, I don’t think are particularly interesting, Bruce convinces them to let him tag along

“What would the boy do?”

“He could be a strongman.”

Both look over at awkward mid-growth spirt Bruce.

“Really?”

“Ay, he’s got the build for it.”

Bam! Bruce is in the circus.

He’s training to be a strongman but in the meantime excels at other tasks, including but not limited to: 

Juggling, knife throwing, animal handling, tightrope walking etc,

Not to mention already can bookkeep and can pick up languages like popcorn

Essentially good at most things except general clownery and more artistic performances like silks.

The general demographics at either about at least 10 years his senior or his junior.

Kids wise, there's just him and of course 4-year-old Dick

When Dick meets Bruce he’s like “this is my new best friend.” meanwhile Bruce is like “oh fuck, oh fuck, what the fuck do I do with a child”

When Dick is around 8 Bruce is forced to acknowledge that Dick is also his best friend and boy doesn’t that make a 19 yr old feel lame

Despite all this, Bruce is in an environment where there’s no pressure to be a Wayne and gets a clean start, which does wonders for him

Still pushes himself out of guilt and anger but now instead of being shammed for it, the people around him just redirect it

Bruce? Getting a supportive environment to train in? Sure hope that doesn’t destroy the universe

Welp, about that

Bruce stays with the circus consistently for years but disappears for a couple of months when he turns 18 (he went back to Gotham to a) prove he’s fine and b)claim his inheritance. 

Does this for a couple of reasons, one of which is that he finds out the circus is losing money and goes back so he can figure out some kind of investment to help

While there, realizes Gotham has gotten bad and is hit with that classic “oh god I’ve been happy while people are suffering I am a horrible person”

So while he does go back to Hailey’s, he ends up leaving more often as he finds different teachers and is unknowingly, officially on the path to Batman™ 

Right around 20 Bruce straight up fully disappears with barely a word as he ends up involved fully with the League of Shadows

Comes out of it a year later

The next time the circus sees him, they are performing in Gotham 

Good news is, the circus doesn’t get blackmailed/pays off protection

The Grayson’s rope doesn’t snap! Yay!

Bad news: someone tries to blow up the circus during their performance. Not only do the Grayson’s die but also the circus almost has to close down. 

The rest follows somewhat similarly but with nuance I’ve run out of room to go into.

I've read a few fics where Something Happens (Tim accidentally kills someone) and Tim calls one of his older brothers and they come and help him cover up/hide a body but like,, if Damian killed someone (accidentally or otherwise) Tim would not even hesitate that body is already melting in acid. He has crime scene cleaners on retainer and enough blackmail that they'll never say anything.

Tim has like 7 contingency plans for this Exact problem and he is going to do his big brotherly duty of helping his younger sibling cover up a mistake/laps of judgement.

And Damian is waiting for the other shoe to drop bc this is the perfect time for Timothy to oust him. He broke father's rule and now he'll be sent back

But Tim continues to say nothing and eventually even corners Damian and is like "bestie you gotta c h i l l they know somethings up I can't keep using puberty as an excuse for you" and Damian is like "why wouldn't you use this opportunity to prove you're the better son. To finally get me out of the house and claim your place is the heir" and Tim is like "uh im your older brother this is my job" and Damian is like "it is an older brother's job to help hide their younger sibling's murders??" And Tim is like "yeah absolutely except don't go to Dick or Jason only go to me or maybe Cass if I'm not around I think Dick would have a conniption and we don't want Jason to relapse"

Obsessed with the idea of Clark, after months of months of intense, depressing cases, getting his investigative friends back together to have one fun, simple mystery... on a murder mystery cruise. Too simple, unfortunately, as most of them solve it immediately and spend the rest of the trip desperately pretending they hadn't already figured it out.

Bruce and Lois are in lockstep at the back of the pack pretending to be clueless but under their breaths are maliciously trying to out spoil the next big reveal for each other. Bruce has a keen eye for the props and details, while Lois knows how a story is written, resulting in a wicked but equal back and forth.

Clark has his eyes locked straight ahead trying desperately not to listen to the actors practicing their lines in the next room over... and ends up blocking out most of the actual plot. Regardless of whether a clue he picks up is intentionally placed or not, he tries his best to forget it immediately and just "enjoy the experience".

The crew had hope for Jimmy. He's a nice young man—very engaged. Little too engaged. Never comes close to solving the case but came out with a very comprehensive knowledge of the first (and only the first) character's backstory. He goes missing after the first few hours and spends the next two days lost in the bellows of the ship investigating the life of the boat's first owner and the many adventures it has been on since. None of it useful to the scripted mystery, but it's significantly more interesting.

In the end, the only ones who properly solve the case are the two old ladies who coincidentally got tickets for the same weekend. Most of their progress could be attributed to Dick's help, however, as he split his time between aiding them and trying to get Alfred a cameo role in the plot.

Lois writes a shoddy review of cruise a week later. The plot is significantly more complex than actually staged—reliant more on how she and Bruce thought the story went (or was going to go), and less on any true memories. The accompanying photos of an old privateer's maps and the musty lost rooms of the ship's hull only aid in the confusion. Clark cannot provide clarification when asked and the review is eventually scraped.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable, if utterly unproductive, vacation.
