Lae'zel is Autistic

(Note: This post was written by someone with professionally diagnosed autism. A lot of what I'm about to say of Lae'zel, I can personally relate to! This is not intended as negativity or hatred of her character; rather, it is one of the reasons I adore her.)
-----
I really don't like that the writers have attempted to tone down Lae'zel's "rudeness" perceived by the larger fanbase. It reminds me too much of how "rudeness" is so often less about hostility and more about one's ability to perform social interactions to the standards of neurotypical people. So for the writers to decide that Lae'zel is too "rude" for not saying her please and thank yous every time she speaks, for being direct, for struggling to have two-sided conversations... well, to me, that's just saying that there was something wrong with her they felt the need to fix. I spent years with people trying to "fix" me in special ed. To teach me how to present as neurotypical, like memorizing appropriate responses to common questions, and pretending to hold eye contact by looking at people's lips. While I will admit it helps me in the workplace for example to perform these things, it also taught me to hate myself for being faulty in the first place. That's something I still struggle with to this day. So when a character like Lae'zel comes along, who I can relate to in her coded autism, I don't want to see her changed. I want to see her celebrated.
Here are some of the signs of autism I've noticed in Lae'zel:
Difficulty regulating and understanding emotion:
Lae'zel is a very passionate person, and can get carried away by that passion. At the same time, she is not very good at self-inventory of her emotions. After she defies Vlaakith in Act 3, she asks the player to help her understand what she is feeling, because she cannot place it herself.
Directness:
As said above, Lae'zel is vert blunt in the way she communicates. If you've picked up the game only in later patches, let me tell you that she was originally even more so. If the player asks Lae'zel why she is the way she is, she says it's just because she is githyanki. While I certainly think some of this could be attributed to a difference in culture, we meet other githyanki, and they do not carry the same speech and manner she has.
Taking things literally:
Lae'zel equally does not understand indirectness from others, or idioms. For example, when Shadowheart asks if they have "buried the hatchet" between them, (an American idiom to mean "making peace" which by the way, is not a very appropriate idiom,) she answers with "why would I bury a weapon?" Again, this could be attributed to a difference in background, but nonetheless something to relate to.
Dislike of small talk:
Literally the first thing Lae'zel says to you after you recruit her is, "chatter already? Tas'ki."
Inflection:
Lae'zel is voiced with minimal modulation of intonation or pitch. As such, she sounds monotone and serious, even when the words she says are lighthearted or joking.
Difficulty handling change of routine/expectancy:
When things do not go as Lae'zel is determined they are supposed to go--for example, the machine she thinks will remove her tadpole not working as she believed it would--she has wild, uncontrolled outbursts.
-----
There's probably even more one could list here, but for now I'm done. I may edit this later, though.

Personally, I’ve never struggled really with shifting as it just came naturally to me bc I was into spirituality before shifting and manifestation etc etc. When I found out about shifting I just knew it would be easy so it was & I minishifted on my first try 🤷♀️ My tips for shifters are to just let go, babe, you know you are going to shift and you ALREADY have shifted so why put shifting on a pedestal? Your mind shifts and as soon as you decide that you’ve shifted ! Easy as that.

So Much For (Tour) Dust-W/ Fall Out Boy, Bring Me the Horizon, Royal & The Serpent, and Games We Play
When I heard that Fall Out Boy was set to hit the road this summer with Bring Me The Horizon, I knew that this was going to be a show that I could not miss. Both bands have help shape my music taste today. What better way to spend a Friday night than to see two awesome bands perform together. For this particular date of the tour, the band is also playing with Royal & The Serpent and Games We Play. Upon arrival to the venue the traffic leading up was at a standstill for at least a mile. Unfortunately, due to the time it took to get into the venue I was unable to capture photos of Games We Play even though we arrived early to the venue.
Games We Play is a pop punk trio that when viral overnight, after posing a teaser of their new song “Deadbeat” on Tik Tok. The video of the singer and his wife, has over a million views. If you are a fan of bands like All Time Low, Real Friends and State Champs, then you will definitely want to add Games We Play to your list of up-and-coming artists to listen to. Games We Play is the first band to step foot on stage for the night. They expressed their excitement for being on tour with Fall Out Boy. They played a few songs and to bring some energy to the crowd they played a cover of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. Another cool thing I noticed about this band, the singer Emmyn, joined us in the photo pit to take photos of Royal & The Serpent’s Set.
Royal & The Serpent, also known as Ryan Santiago, is a singer song writer from New Jersey. She independently debuted her first single “Temperance” back in 2017. In an interview with Prelude Press she explains what the name Royal & The Serpent means, it translates to Me + My Ego also explaining that “Duality is the essence of our human experience.” In 2019 Royal & The Serpent was signed with Atlantic Records. She has 3 EP’s and a bunch of singles that has been released to date. After the release of her 3rd EP, IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE she got the opportunity to go out on the road with Demi Lovato on her Holy Fvck Tour. I was not expecting to actually leave this show finding another artist that I enjoy listening too. When the other photographers & I were hanging out in the VIP area before Bring Me The Horizon came out, we heard a song that sounded familiar. It’s called “Overwhelmed”, I have heard it plenty of times at shows and in some Tik Tok videos, but I did not expect it to actually be a Royal & The Serpent song. Royal & The Serpent are for sure a band I will be adding to my must listen to list.
Bring Me The Horizon is a British Rock band from Sheffield forming back in 2006. The band has 8 albums released to date. The band has such a large variety of musical stylings, due to the idea of each album that they released should be different from the last, they have experimented with mixing electronica, nu metal, pop and rock trying to get away from the metalcore sound from earlier albums. The band has collaborated with artist’s that I wouldn’t expect them to work with such as Halsey, Lil Uzi Vert, and Ed Sheeran. No matter what album you are listening to, I feel like Bring Me The Horizon has a song for everyone. I’ve listened to them since I was an early teenager and even now, I can still enjoy the new music they are producing. When Bring Me The Horizon finally graced us with their presence, I got super excited and was ready for what they were going to play for us that night. They played a bunch of fan favorites such as “Can You Feel My Heart", “Throne”, and “Happy Song.” There were fans there from all over, I was looking at some of the signs the fans had drew and one of them asked Oli Sykes to draw her next Bring Me The Horizon tattoo, which I thought was an awesome idea especially if you are a super fan. During their set Oli wanted the fans to step it up a notch and he kept asking them to mosh because the first two mosh pits were “sh*t.” I absolutely loved their set, since I was able to hear all my favorite songs by them and even see them for the first time live on top of being able to take photos of them was unimaginable.
Fall Out Boy is an American Rock band from Chicago Illinois, they formed back in 2001. Fall Out Boy was one of the main bands that introduced me to Pop-Rock and Pop-Punk with their catchy songs such as “Thnks fr th Mmrs” and “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” This band has had a variety of accomplishments in their career, they have won many awards such as artist of the year, multiple best music video awards, favorite alternative band and many more. Before Fall Out Boy even had the chance to step out on stage the fans at the barricades were going crazy. When the curtains were going up, I was not expecting what happened next, I jumped a little bit each time this happened. Fall Out Boy came out blasting, the band had fireworks going off and fire going off at all the high points of the songs. I loved the energy that they had to give, the singer Patrick Stump, was swinging his guitar around and hitting all those notes hard. I loved the fact that Pete Wenz had a flame thrower attached to his guitar. As we were leaving the pit, I noticed that a fan was waving around a sign that said, “I came here from London to make sure that this tour was real”. I loved that this tour had fans coming from all over the country to see them let alone coming from another country.

Who would yall say the most versatile artist/band of the 21st century is?
Who would y’all say the most versatile artist/band of the 21st century is? I’d personally have to go with Bring Me The Horizon. When they started in 2004, they were a deathcore band. Then they moved to metalcore on their album Suicide Season. There Is A Hell is when they started to experiment with sounds, and their album Sempiternal really laid the foundation for today’s metal with the symphonic and electronic elements (lots of metal bands today like Spiritbox and Bad Omens are using elements from different genres), as well as combining metalcore with nu metal. Then in 2015 they released That’s The Spirit, which they moved away from metal and into hard rock and alternative rock, with even a couple of pop rock songs on it. Amo was another non heavy album which is a mix of pop rock, pop metal, electronic rock, and EDM. The song Medicine doesn’t even sound rock at all, it just sounds like a regular pop song. The 2 albums they have released since then are mixtures of metalcore, alternative metal, post hardcore, pop metal, hyperpop, and easycore (which is basically pop punk with metalcore/post hardcore breakdowns). They have also collabed with Ed Sheeran, Grimes, Halsey, and Lil Uzi Vert (who is one of my favorite rappers of all time). Oli (the band’s singer) also appeared in a Charli XCX music video.Their versatility in music has brought them a very diverse fanbase, from death metal/deathcore fanboys to basic teenage pop girls. Though lots of the fanbase is divided, with some fans of their earlier work thinking anything after There Is A Hell is trash and complaining that they “went soft” from Sempiternal onwards. Others liked them until Amo, saying it wasn’t real rock. I’ve seen some fans who discovered them through albums like That’s The Spirit and Amo, and had no idea they used to be a metalcore and deathcore band. Their metalcore music is my favorite from them, but I also really like their hard rock and pop rock/pop metal music too. There are plenty of other hella versatile rock bands out there, but I’ve never seen anyone go from deathcore or metalcore to pop. While Linkin Park was pretty versatile, I think it’s still fair to say that the vast majority of their music is alternative metal and hard rock. Even artists like Kelly Clarkson, Chris Brown, and Chief Keef ain’t even close to touching Bring Me’s versatility (though all 3 of those people are talented). I love how in the episode Vert-Ed-Go, it really shows how much Eddy cares for Ed by doing everything he can to make him safe while they're building the clubhouse, I just think it's so cute

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 08/07/2023 (Olivia Rodrigo, D-Block Europe/Clavish, Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Pink Tape’)
Content warning: mentions of bigotry
For a fifth week, despite some tough competition, Dave and Cench hold onto #1 with “Sprinter” - welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
Rundown
As always, we start with our notable dropouts - songs exiting the UK Top 75, which is what I cover, after five weeks in the region or a peak in the top 40 - and we don’t have all that many, at least those of note, this week. In fact, for a week with three big names dropping, it ended up kind of muted and there’s really not much happening outside of those three acts. We do say farewell to “Attention” by Doja Cat, which seems a bit premature, as well as some long-term bottom-feeders like “Do I Wanna Know?” by the Arctic Monkeys and “Bad Habits” by Ed Sheeran. It’s also a bad week for Beyoncé as both “CUFF IT” and “AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM” drop off of the charts.
And as I said, unless I missed anything, we have not that much here to fill up the gaps. Sure, “Mr. Brightside” is back because of course it is, but other than that, “Die for You” by The Weeknd is our only return at #69 - nice, and our only notable gains are in the top 40, with D.O.D getting his first top 40 with “So Much in Love” at #36 and respectable gains for “How Does it Feel” by Tom Grennan at #23, as well as Taylor Swift getting her morbillionth top 10 hit with “Cruel Summer” boosted up to #6, and I assume we can expect one or two more next week with the Speak Now re-release.
Most of our activity is in the new arrivals as mentioned earlier, so the top 5 is also pretty standard apart from one standout song. We have “Giving Me” by Jazzy at #5, “Miracle” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding at #4, “Who Told You” by J Hus featuring Drake at #3, the debut of “vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo at #2 - more on that when we get to it later, and finally, of course, “Sprinter” at the very top. Now we have our surprisingly small batch of new songs, with the first two both being penned by…
NEW ARRIVALS
#75 - “Endless Fashion” - Lil Uzi Vert featuring Nicki Minaj
Produced by Bugz Ronin
So, Pink Tape is a mess. Even those who like it I imagine will be willing to admit that a 26-track behemoth with various different styles, none of which are effectively combined or sequenced in a way that makes all too much sense, isn’t all too cohesive of a listening experience. I love the idea of the album, with Uzi just throwing every idea and every expression - usually still at the most instinctual level - onto the album, seeing what works and not giving a damn if it doesn’t as long as they still think it goes hard, and as a first listen it was a fascinating one, but I can’t deny that the quality of the songs are incredibly inconsistent and whilst innovative and experimental in some regards, there’s a lot of dull pop-trap filler throughout that ranges from vaguely sufferable to… well, “Endless Fashion”. This is one of the worst songs I think I have ever heard, genuinely, and it should be pretty obvious why. Part of me wants to like this use of the “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” sample more than “I’m Good (Blue)” because at least it’s slightly more subtle and keeps the goofier vibe of the original - even if it has no chance of peaking at #1 like those two did - but once Uzi starts hammering that interpolation in, it’s practically laughable. At least they stick to the bit, with Nicki half-giving up in her half of the chorus as she gives some of her worst lines ever, about her Republican surgeon who made her ass great again like MAGA, how she’s going to “rag you” like pasta and, worst of all, how it gets messy, like soccer. These lyrics sound like they’re made for Anthony Fantano to read condescendingly in his review, and it really doesn’t help that not only do the two have no chemistry but the chorus is overlong both times, just with Nicki absent from the second… which is kind of hilarious. There’s basically nothing to this cloudy, minimal pop-trap beat, laden with synths that just exist, and there’s no attempt by Bugz Ronin to even attempt to play with the beat to fit with the duo’s inflections. The one time the beat cuts out, it sounds incredibly awkward, leading into Nicki’s verse which… I mean, it has a lot of flow switches, I can say that. Otherwise, she’s spelling out words, misgendering Uzi on their own album, and she still can’t sing all that well, especially not in that fast-paced sing-songy flow she tries out here for two measures and gives up, before returning to the chorus flow at… what obviously seems a measure too late, leading to non-flubbed rhymes that sound like mistakes. She pays a tribute to the late fashion designer, sexual misconduct apologist, Islamophobe and all-around just wonderful person Karl Lagerfield by promoting her own Marc Jacobs photoshoot, in an embarrassing and distracting melodic departure that clearly should not be in the verse. I would not be nearly as nit-picky if the vocals clearly weren’t the focus - there’s nothing to the beat worth caring about and definitely no energy there, with Nicki not channelling her insane Roman persona to make any of this seem worth dismissing or even comical. It’s just embarrassing for her, especially when she seems to realise this, giving up with the melodies for a brief spoken exchange with some random guy, then devolving into incoherent record label ads and clock sound effects. And for all of the song, these two are obsessed with Asians! The worst thing about this, is that this is still a good idea, with Nicki taking much of the “fault” here because Uzi is considerably less direct, contributing to her monetizable villain and queen personas, whilst this’ll still go off thanks to nostalgia bait and playlisting. I’m not sure how much Uzi or Bugz Ronin will actually see from the profits this heap of junk makes, considering the sample, the label, the streaming services and the fact this doesn’t exactly seem like anything but a vehicle for that upcoming Nicki Minaj sequel album, but this has none of the fun I want and expect from said album, and honestly, it’s just kind of depressing.
#63 - “Flooded the Face” - Lil Uzi Vert
Produced by Harold Harper and Don Cannon
Okay, now that’s out of the way, we have the opener for Pink Tape which did end up heightening my expectations, and since it works out that we have two debuts in the top 75 from the album - “Aye” with Travis Scott is at #94 - I can talk about one song I dislike and one song I love, and given I have a lot less to say about “Flooded the Face”, I’ll breeze through some of my favourite moments on the record: Uzi’s growling emulation of Playboi Carti is fun and resonates especially on the rebellious “Suicide Doors”, the Ken Carson-produced borderline hyperpop beat on “x2” is joyful, Uzi’s falsetto whining on “That Fiya” saves an otherwise uninteresting song from being forgettable - in fact, the first nine or so songs wouldn’t make a half-bad EP - whilst on what I like to call the post-”Endless Fashion” section of the album, wherein nothing makes sense anymore, we have some of the record’s best and weirdest cuts, with the hype anthem “Nakamura”, probably my favourite track and would make a great single, the smash hit “Just Wanna Rock” which has honestly grown on me even more since release, the alarming siren of “Fire Alarm” and Uzi’s chaotic back-and-forth with Foushe on production from Snow Strippers of all bands, some decent introspection on “Rehab”, a mad-cap closer from BABYMETAL on “The End” and of course, their System of a Down cover on “CS” which I still can’t listen to without laughing. Whilst “Flooded the Face” isn’t in my favourites, it’s still a great opener that seemed to promise more of a standard collection of Uzi bangers than what we actually ended up with. After an atmospheric intro which calls back to their prior albums, Uzi starts the album clarifying that they can’t be homosexual because they’re smashing eight women a day. There’s a lot more Uzi has said in regards to their gender identity in interviews and on “GLOCK ON MY PURSE”, but their comic dismissal here is a perfect start to the album, especially since they continue to respond in the track after. Despite the mixing being a bit too cloudy for it to make as much of an impact as it should, the chorus is still insanely catchy and Uzi’s energetic flows carry their uninteresting flexes, especially the more melodic delivery in the bridge and outro which both sound pretty wistful. It’s a good opener, it’s a shame the album didn’t live up to it but I’m honestly glad we have a weirder, more inconsistent album than one that would sound too similar to Uzi’s last couple projects, because innovation may be what’s needed right now in mainstream hip hop. I just wish “Nakamura” charted instead.
#61 - “Speed Drive” (from Barbie the Album) - Charli XCX
Produced by EASYFUN
Welp, the new single from the Barbie movie is by Charli XCX, which makes complete sense, and it makes even more sense that it’s a hyperpop song called “Speed Drive” - that apparently plays during a car chase! Perfect brand synergy on display. The lyrics are honestly similarly as vapid as “Endless Fashion” in their pop culture references - vapid pop culture references are the theme with this week, it seems, and they haven’t yet reached their peak - but there are two differences here. Firstly, “Speed Drive” is about another person, with the corny references to Charli’s admiration of her close friend, and secondly, “Speed Drive” is incredibly fun. EASYFUN is one of my favourite producers from the recently-defunct PC Music label, with “Laplander” probably being the collective’s shining moment, and Mr. Keane delivers an intense mix of plummeting bass-heavy percussion with the buzzy synth bass in the chorus and a simple, phone ringing-esque set of keys that acts as the song’s foundation. The way the buzzy synth remains in the background of the second verse and post-chorus is a great touch and attention to detail, and whilst this is far from the catchiest chorus Charli’s delivered, and definitely not her most memorable song considering the lack of a bridge, it’s a great addition to the Barbie soundtrack and its inclusion makes almost way too much sense. Oh, and almost like it’s set up to out-do “Endless Fashion”, it features not just one but two gratuitous samples, ironically both of which end up having samples in the first place, with much of the melodic composition and rhythm being extracted from Swedish singer Robyn’s cover of fellow Swedes Teddybears’ “Cobrastyle” featuring Jamaican deejay Mad Cobra. Neither version charted in the UK, but the original was a #1 in Greece. Furthermore, the chorus references the iconic chant from Toni Basil’s #2 hit from 1982, “Mickey”, which was stalled at the runner-up spot in the UK by “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” but hit #1 in the US. That song itself heavily interpolates the pop rock band Racey’s album cut “Kitty”, though the aforementioned chant doesn’t appear in their version. Speaking of gratuitous samples and dystopian-level pop culture references…
#52 - “We Didn’t Start the Fire” - Fall Out Boy
Produced by Neal Avron
We are not doing this. We’re just not. It’s my duty as a chart researcher to tell you that the Billy Joel original that, for the record, I don’t even like, peaked at #7 in 1989 whilst topping the US Hot 100, but otherwise, we’re just not doing this. We’re not doing “Oklahoma City bomb, Kurt Cobain, Pokémon”. We’re not doing “Boris Johnson, Brexit, Kanye West and Taylor Swift”. We’re absolutely NOT doing “ISIS, LeBron James, Shinzo Abe blown away”. We’re just not, man, it’s not happening. I refuse to recognise the existence of this.
#10 - “Pakistan” - D-Block Europe and Clavish
Produced by Da Beatfreakz
Yeah, even though all episodes of this series are in some sense about late-stage capitalism, this episode has felt particularly so, but thankfully we have a break with our final two songs which aren’t as on-the-nose or heavily lifting from other tracks, though it’s not like DBE are any strangers to mentioning brands of course, and we still get an intro sampled from YouTuber “CrazyRussianHacker”, which combined with the explosion sound effects, starts the song off with a heavy-hitting beat drop and it sounds kind of awesome. In fact… I really like the song, surprisingly enough. Young Adz relegates himself to the chorus, as should always happen, with comical references to different countries in the chorus which is almost too silly to dislike, especially considering how many falsetto ad-libs he throws at us. I like Dirtbike LB’s verse a lot as is usual, with several flows ranging from the most assertive I’ve ever heard from him to the typical drunken slip he usually goes for, punctuated by an “mm-mm” and effectively playing with the rhythm of the beat really well. I don’t particularly like the Romani slur used, but he calls his cocaine “Ellen de-DeGeneres”, which really caught me off guard and made me laugh on first listen. I’m sure the bar for wordplay nowadays is in Hell, but I really liked Clavish’s opening line and his flow was surprisingly technical for him, providing possibly his best verse yet? It’s not all that interesting content wise, but he was practically harmonising with the 808s and going for risky run-off flows with a decently confident delivery. I have no idea how Clavish is the hit-maker he is, but it’s a good verse on a pretty hard beat that drowns out the vintage pianos with a stupid, catchy chorus, so I can’t really complain. This is a banger.
#2 - “vampire” - Olivia Rodrigo
Produced by Dan Nigro
Okay, so I feel I’ve been giving more lenience with and praise to pop and EDM as of late on this series, which probably has to do with the genres generally delivering more quality on the charts in 2023, but yes, I am about to say that I prefer the D-Block Europe and Clavish song a lot more than Olivia Rodrigo’s comeback. I don’t just prefer the DBE song, but I actually don’t like “vampire” at all. To me, it sounds like a pissier re-tread of “drivers license”, though her breathier and more intimate delivery, alongside the really wordy verses, both remind me of her idol Taylor’s more recent work as well as detailing this manipulative relationship in a particularly heavy-handed way but that could work for me considering the lyrics are well-written - in the verses at least - and she’s a good singer, with the pianos and intimacy potentially making the song feel like an effective vent session… but then we get into the melodrama with the very “drivers license”-esque pick-up of the pace after the chorus, as well as some badly-mixed backing vocals, wavy synths and strings fluttering out of nowhere and creating an intense song that lacks mostly in dynamics, especially since whilst she may have left some of the teen-pop melodrama behind, every idea still feels very predictable, even the bridge, which doesn’t hit nearly as hard as “drivers license”, just kind of seeping weakly into the chorus, and the rapid yet abrupt outro. I appreciate the song for its lyrics and definitely making an effective comeback, but I’m not surprised at all that the UK would rather hear “Sprinter”, because this… I don’t know, it feels like it’s been done, and definitely could have been executed a lot better. Sorry.
Conclusion
…D-Block Europe and Clavish are getting Best of the Week for “Pakistan”. No, seriously - I know, hyperpop charted, that should be an easy click but “Speed Drive” by Charli XCX, which still gets the Honourable Mention, didn’t have the surprise factor and definitely just functioned as a continuation of the expectations I had for Charli and the Barbie soundtrack rather than a genuinely promising track which made me appreciate all three rappers a bit more. Worst of the Week… I mean, it should probably be a tie between Uzi and that song I refuse to recognise, but hey, if I refuse to recognise it, it surely can’t get Worst of the Week so it just ends up in the hands of Lil Uzi Vert and Nicki Minaj for “Endless Fashion”, with a Dishonourable Mention going to “vampire” by Olivia Rodrigo, which surprised me just about as much as anyone. As for what’s on the horizon… I’m no astronomer but I see a massive Taylor Swift-shaped star heading for us. For now, thank you for reading and I’ll see you next week!

'Virt-Ed-Go' Early Storyboard Roughs
Thanks to Scott "Diggs" Underwood for sharing these in this interview he did for Concept Art Empire!
I didn't see much explanation from these, but judging by the poses and dialogue, this is an early storyboard of the scenes from 'Virt-Ed-Go' when the Eds are walking down the street before spotting the tree they build Club Ed in. Eddy, for no apparent reason, is sweaty and stinky and leaving puddles.
In the aired episode, they actually walk from the opposite direction, with Eddy leading:
This page says "the tree" in the top left corner, has a scribbled out drawing of Eddy squishing Edd and Ed against his face, then several chin rubbing Edds and Eddys saying "where??..." and "Hmmm.." while Ed shows them where to find... what seems like a wooden pole he wants to steal for clubhouse material. I don't think any scene like this exists in the episode, just seems to be early concept art for how their thought process could have gone if they didn't go straight to Jonny and Plank for help.
One thing I'm gonna point out barely connected to this: I just got reminded that the correct spelling of the word is "vertigo" but the episode is titled "Virt-Ed-Go." Did they switch the vowels just because of Ed in the middle or was it a misspelling? Some sources like the DVDs spell "Vert" correctly. Weird!

Year-End Poll #68: 2017

It's easier more than ever to see the effects of streaming on the pop charts. As electropop and club music become a distant memory, the pop music of the late 2010's works better with individual listening. As mentioned before, streaming works better for album listening, much more than the iTunes era which encouraged the purchasing of individual songs (which was great for singles artists, but not necessarily for albums). Some artists were able to hack this system. For example, Drake's Views (featured on the previous poll) was notable for having 20 songs on its tracklist -- which is a lot for a pop release. Unlike the iTunes era or even the CD era before, longer albums with shorter songs flourish more in the streaming landscape.
Streaming also helped to continue blurring the line between genres and audiences. Without going too much into it (because this is a topic I could ramble on about endlessly), genres were not handed down to us from Mount Olympus or something. Genre is a tool of marketing, and the lines drawn between them can have a variety of cultural, racial, economic, gender, religious, and other variables between them. These lines were more prominent in previous years before streaming made it easier to access just about every kind of music at once. This is when we start to see the rise of a concept known as the "monogenre". In order to cater to as wide an audience as possible, everything starts to sound like everything. A little rock, a little indie, a little trap, a little tropical house, a little festival EDM. There were also those who criticized the streaming era in how it promotes a more "passive" listening style, since playlists and algorithms could continue playing ad infinitum without the listener needing to seek out new music themselves. While I certainly see the evidence of that on the charts, I don't think this tells the complete story.
As a less cynical counter-argument, streaming has made it easier for listeners to find music that otherwise wouldn't have been marketed to them. I believe that this could be one of the factors behind reggaeton finding a growing audience among English speakers. Obviously reggaeton did not originate this year. The roots of the genre can be traced back to the 1980's in Panama where it would later grow an even larger audience in Puerto Rico. The genre would grow in popularity in the States as well, especially in the early 2000's. But if you weren't paying attention to Spanish language music (and you didn't grow up in the Southwest), it was easy for mainstream audiences to miss it. Reggaeton includes influences from dancehall and hip-hop, so it makes sense that the genre would find a mainstream English-speaking audience when those two genres were also shaping pop music. Because Despacito wasn't just big for a reggaeton song. It wasn't even big for a Latin pop song. Despacito led to Daddy Yankee becoming the sixth most listened-to artist on Spotify in 2017, and led to an influx of Latin and reggaeton artists who were able to cross over without English language remixes. Billboard magazine has an article here about the "Despacito Effect".

Naruto Characters and What Music I Think They Would Listen To Pt.1
Naruto
-You know those popular boys from school? The emoji tracksuit kids that like dunked on you when you walked through a door?
-Those vibes
-He listens to almost exclusively mainstream rap. It has to be 🔥🔥🔥 ya know?
-Always talking about the new Drake album or the new Kanye album. LOVES Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino i just see it in his eyes.
Sasuke
-This fuckin guy
-See, my knee jerk reaction is like your emo classics. Pierce the Veil, MCR, Linkin Park. Screamo. Metal.
-But no. We have similar temperaments and I think that kind of music would actually irritate him.
-I think he’s emo but more mainstream soundcloud rapper emo. Lil Peep, $UICIDEBOY$, Lil Uzi Vert. LOVES XXXTentacion.
-Post screenshots of what he’s listening to on his snapchat story and you just know the boy is going THROUGH it.
Sakura
-OKAY so HERE is your rock and roll/metal baddie!!!
-hear me out. when she’s young its all pop. like y2k pop with R&B leanings. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, etc. you get the idea
-but after training under Tsundae she picks up rock. starts with some classic rock at first, then slowly progresses.
-this girl loves Metallica and Black Sabbath. she just loves rock. Zeppelin, AC/DC, Five Finger Death Punch. All of it. I will not be taking any criticism.
-windows down in the car, headbanging always.
Kakashi
-this one is a little difficult to nail down
-a part of me just wants to throw him in the pool of doesn't really care and will listen to anything
-i think he’s got a different playlist for every mood
-R&B sexy playlist with the Weeknd and some Justin Timberlake (yes he thinks that's sexy), soft sad boy hours playlist with Post Malone and Russ, a party mix with some your standard frat boy bops.
-overall, he listens to a lot of popular music
Yamato/Tenzou
-another tough one to nail down!!!
-i truly think Yamato is a man of all tastes as well
-however.... i get country music vibes???
-not like new, pop, country. but the classics. Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton.
-he also likes jazz! and big band/swing. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin. What i would refer to as whiskey drinkin music. kinda classy and fun
Sai
-girl
-i truly do not know
-the man is an enigma
-i think once he joins team 7 and kinda strays away from the foundation he’s gonna be all about trying new stuff
-so one day he’s listening to Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande. Radio pop, entry level shit
-and the next time you see him its songs he heard on tiktok exclusively
-eventually he’s down a rabbit hole, consuming music in mass quantities and he’s into Crystal Castles and Grimes. Then next week its Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. Then it’s Judas Priest and Guns N Rose.
-everyone just gives up trying to keep track
Shikamaru
-oh its male manipulator music ALLLL DAY
-tame impala, mac demarco, the front bottoms, arctic monkeys, modern baseball, the smiths
-you get the idea
-dont necessarily think he's the ‘male manipulator’ type but he’s def the edgy smoking cigs and listening for the lyrics type
-i don't have to go into detail here you know I'm right
Ino
-see, her and Sakura go down similar paths
-she started off with the y2k bubblegum pop phase but her progression is a little more understandable
-shes your typical indie (except they aren't really indie) pop darling. Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Marina and Diamonds, Melanie Martinez, the 1975.
-what I'm saying is she was definitely on tumblr in 2014 and just never moved past that phase (did any of us tbh)
-as time goes on though she starts to branch out a lil. loves the mainstream women of rap! Cardi B, Megan thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat. constantly bopping
Choji
-i couldn't find any gifs of this cutie smiling and that's a crime i want addressed RIGHT NOW
-but music wise?? i mean he’s a sweetheart right?? genuinely likes pop music! Ed Sheeran, Maroon 5, Katy Perry. HUGE Bruno Mars fan surprisingly
-i can see him just bopping his head along to the radio, just vibing and not being picky. loves a good ballad. Sam Smith, John Legend.
-hes just having a good time
Hinata
-queen of yearning and pining
-girl in red, mitski, HOZIER
-i feel like her playlist just looks like someone let a closeted queer girl put it together
-ABBA, St. Vincent, Florence + the Machine
-also just soft pop vibes. she’s defo posting sunset videos with the Lumineer’s playing in the background. HEAVY cottage core inspo
Shino
-here is your true emo king
-the trinity of course. P!ATD, MCR, Fallout Boy
-then Twenty One Pilots, Paramore, GORRILAZ
-he gives me also like art kid vibes as he gets older? Weezer, Wallows, Cage the Elephant. you know the type
Kiba
-kinda smilar to Naruto tbh
-but it HAS to be FIRE. no sad music! bass turned up and LOUD always
-i feel like he even went through a dubstep phase.
-hes the guy in the mcdonalds drive thru ‘you know what I'm here for’ *blasts Sicko Mode*
-some stand out faves are Travis Scott, Tyler, the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Dredd
-he’s actually pretty cool tbh
Rock Lee
-yall ever been to a football game and they play the same hype songs over and over? ever seen a workout montage in an 80s movie?
-thats this boy. he’s just constantly listening to workout playlists. Eye of the Tiger, Livin’ on a Prayer, Welcome to the Jungle
-outside of that, i would think some of his favorite artists would be things Gai would listen to. Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, the BEASTIE BOYS, Foreigner, Aerosmith
-what I'm trying to say is he listens to the same music ur dad listens to
Neji
-fucking music SNOB
-’you've probably never heard of them’ headass
-and then its like the strokes or vampire weekend or some shit jfc
-male manipulator music part two but 100% fits the stereotype. hes gonna leave you on read and then cry to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
-some standout favorites are the Pixies, Neutral Milk Hotel, alt-J.
-likes some other stuff too. The White Stripes, The Black Keys, some Beck.
