💫🧚♀️ We are celebrating World Down Syndrome Day from Neverland ☁️ 🌈 The analogy is perfect: You cannot get to Neverland without a guide like Peter Pan … you are afraid to go with him (or her) into the unknown but once you arrive you are surrounded with so much beauty your fears dissipate as fast as they arrived. When you are in Neverland you are forever young; celebrating and enjoying things that are not “Age appropriate” according to society and happy to do so. There are villians and challenges here that we also must face and overcome every, single day. Somehow we always seem to. The things we once thought important cease to be and you have an entirely new perspective and outlook on the world and all the people in it once you’ve been there. People who have never been to Neverland will never truly understand the complexities, beauty, heartbreak and triumphs that await you there. I feel sorry for them, not for Blake, Amelia or anyone else who is a member of this diverse and rich community. 💫 our wish is the same every year. Please include our kids. Please educate yourselves and be a vessel of education and accurate information for others around you. Help to create a world that is welcoming, compassionate, understanding and willing to make accommodations so we can all have access to our surroundings. All means ALL. No exclusions or exceptions. Remeber: anything is possible with a little faith, trust and pixie dust… ✨💫🧚♀️💛💙 #WDSD2023 #WDSD #DownSyndrome #dualdiagnosis #tinkerbell #FaithTrustandPixieDust #worlddownsyndromeday #downsyndromeawareness #inclusionmatters #Inclusion #disabilityawareness #PeterPan @nikivader @disney @disneyparks (at NeverLand) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqEJ3HbSaE5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I’m straying from my usual posts for a minute because
March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day!

My biggest reason for celebrating today is of course impacted by his Down syndrome. It’s probably one of the first things you notice about him. He has had many more therapies and extra doctors appointments than most kids his age. Sometimes he has to do things a little differently. Sometimes they take a little bit longer. It’s okay to notice that some things are different. But it’s so important to remember that these things are just one piece. He is not defined or limited by his Down syndrome. He is a son, a brother, a grandson, a nephew, a cousin, and a friend. He is a little boy who loves rocket ships and Toy Story and popcorn. He is adorable and stubborn all at once and his laugh is super contagious. He is learning to read and is so proud of every accomplishment. He is just who he is supposed to be--strengths, weaknesses, and, yes, Down syndrome. All of these things together make him who he is. And that’s who I want you to see when you look at him--a whole wonderful person, not just a diagnosis.
This will be my sixth year joining in Rock Your Socks to raise awareness for Down syndrome and celebrate someone I love a whole lot. So on 3/21 let your extra attention-grabbing socks show. If you participate, I’d love to see your silly socks!
