i am RIPPING the microphone out of your hand and marching up to the front of the stage to tell everyone about the brainworms. none of you will be spared. this is what you have wrought. you've let the world ending princess out of the basement now.

but also. massive Slay The Princess spoilers below. seriously, this is gonna spoil the whole deal of what the Princess actually is, and it's really the sort of game you should go into reasonably blind, you won't regret it. It's hot among indie horror let's players atm I think, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a playthrough.

But then again I'm not your dad so just know you've been warned.

first of all: the princess' final form/The Shifting Mound takes cues from the iconography of hindu deities, or at least seems to. if the reference was unintentional I'll be genuinely surprised (this isn't an accusation of appropriation or anything - Hinduism isn't a closed religion, and I actually think the reference fits with the Shifting Mound and the princess' many forms' whole situation, so it's just a cool detail). it will be informing my inner picture of eden's true form during their "glory days" (before plague and giving up the Keystone and most of their power) from now on.

but the whole deal of like... the princess (and the many forms she can take) being the fragmented essence of a deity of change who was feared because she also represents death is like holy cow! edencore! they're essentially a deity with a fragmented memory, a multifaceted domain, and diminished existence! they don't represent chaos but nature can be kinda similar, in themes if not aesthetics. and especially like... in the fear of something ultimately natural, like death. and how that fear isn't unfounded or unreasonably, but when taken too far, it inflicts disaster on the world.

eden too is a shapeshifter. mostly in that they have animal forms, but i think emotionally, they're a mimic - and that's the source of a lot of their apparent volatility. if someone's kind to them, they'll be downright magnanimous right back. if someone antagonizes them, they'll be bitchy in turn and they won't be the one to de-escalate or stop holding the feud first. that tbh. that sort of thing is the driving force behind The Princess' shifting forms imo. she is a creature of perception, you are what you make her, but I find she responds in kind to whatever you, the protagonist, do. if you imprison her, she seeks to imprison you. if you betray her, she'll betray you when you're the one with the exposed back. but if you love her, she'll love you back. cuts both ways.

also like... the world the game takes place in. the construct. i kind of want to make something like that as like, a dream of eden or another powerful figure? maybe one of the Devatas' past schemes to get Eden away from The Verdant Haven permanently was to trap them in that sort of dream realm, a forever-repeating, mutating, airtight story-realm. obviously that didn't work. this is where the brainworms are taking me in terms of setting and backstory design.

and also... this isn't about main verse eden. in fact, it's about their original verse, a soulslike-inspired hindu mythology-based setting where Eden was the dying, comatose god who all plant life depended on, and Vayu/Yuya was the protagonist trying to revive them. And I made this years, before I ever knew about Slay The Princess, but by sheer coincidence, Yuya <--> Eden what the protagonist <--> The Princess in slay the princess in terms of metaphysics: separated fragments of the same whole. someone who reccomended the game to me actually said after I played it and rambled at him that he partly reccomended it to me because it reminded him of vayuden a little. and man. that made me ecstatic.

anyway this is not nearly the full extent of the brainworms, just the brainworms I could put to words. you understand. thank you thank you for indulging me.

god i’m trying to have a conversation with my dad where i’m trying to respond positively to what he’s saying and he makes it REALLY hard

so for context: i am 21, autistic, a gamer, a computer science student, and have adhd. i have some amount of social anxiety (not terrible) but it does make going out and talking to people uncomfortable.

my dad is a boomer. he works as a government contractor and works as either software engineer (explain things to the customer) or architect. when he has spare time, he does plays the piano, fixes things around the house, and goes camping. i personally don’t find joy in those activities and don’t comment on them.

it is summer, and my parents have been pushing me for the last month to find a job. i don’t really get why, but i see a reason i could use one — not having something to do every day other than recreation can put me into a depressive mood swing.

now that college is out for the summer, i am being ridden even harder than before to find a job. my dad wants me to spend 8 hours a day finding a job or working at a job. i’m trying to understand why he wants that, since as long as it’s a reason i see some logic behind i’m willing to consider it, but even asking him directly why i need one leaves no response other than a circular argument or “you not having one causes me distress”

our most recent interaction went sideways as well. he came into my room asking me while i was gaming and started asking me about a job while i was in voice. i put the game aside since i wasn’t actively doing anything in it at the moment and was at a good point to get off anyways, and left the voice chat shortly thereafter as i could tell things were getting a little tense.

he asks me if i have looked for a job today. no, i respond, i haven’t, but i can check my email for suggested positions, since indeed had recently promoted positions i would actually like to work in. he then asks me to spend the rest of the day getting a job, going out and such.

backtracking a little. i had, over the weekend prior, sent him a document of “common, healthy behaviors of people with autism” that i had found on here. he responded with something that sounded as if he had read it. great! i thought, this might lead to us being able to better understand each other!

we now return to our regularly scheduled programming of a number of uncomfortable expectations, including:

a sudden change in how i spend half of my day to an activity that i find to be mentally taxing and socially draining

compliance with an expectation for which the basis remains inadequately explained

respect for a particularly narrow scope of what said activities i can spend my day on

returning to the end of our first conversation. this went well, as far as i could tell, and i decided to spend some time preparing things for an interview for a job i am strongly hoping i can get. i am working on something adjacent to this when he returns and starts looking for me.

he asks what i’m doing. i tell him i’m preparing for an interview tomorrow. he asks when said job would start should i get hired, and i tell him i’d expect it to formally start after about 2 weeks, where i would get training in the position. he looks… disappointed.

i tell him i’m uncomfortable with going out and talking to people to look for a job and propose some other activities i could do. i could do volunteering, i could do coding exercises, i could teach myself math.

he tells me to get a job, but opens the option of going to the gym.

i’m confused, but i do see something there. i ask for assistance in developing an exercise routine, since i wouldn’t really know what to do at the gym, as i don’t regularly work out. he then closes the option for going to the gym.

what the hell am i supposed to do? i have a fantastic job lined up with an interview TOMORROW and he shows no sign that he understands i might actually have a position. how am i supposed to meet his standard while also not putting myself in a situation where i feel i’m at risk?

food service is off the table — i’ve worked in food service before, but had a bad experience at my last job there. my therapist helped me silo it from affecting jobs as a whole into just food service, so i don’t want to open that can of worms.

i’m also opting out of retail, since a lot of retail environments have a number of high stress scenarios id be likely to get into. i do not have the best stress response and end up basing a significant amount of my self worth on personal goals and have high standards for myself, so it spells a recipe for a bad time.

that leaves entertainment, for which i have applied to a number of positions for. the one which got back to me was for custodial duties — the exact thing i had a bad time with back at my old job. ended up passing on it once i realized that was what the position was.

and then there’s the position of camp counselor. i’ve applied to what feels like every camp in my area, and gotten results from the one i was really hoping for, and that interview is tomorrow. but what do i do if things don’t work out, or they do, but not for a week or two? do i just avoid him?

Romy? Nah, Ro/Me

I'm just gonna put this out there. I love Rogue. Not just in the sense of "she's my favorite character", but in the way a man loves his wife. I've loved her since high school in the early 90's, so that's a bit more than 30 years. My head knows she's not real, but my heart doesn't care.

Way back in the day, I wrote a wish fulfillment self-insert fanfic in first-person perspective from my own point of view about me gaining mutant powers, going to New York, becoming an X-Man, and getting together with Rogue thanks to one of my powers being a convenient immunity to her powers. I uploaded it to the Internet and it was not well received. I don't know if anyone else out there was around on Usenet newsgroups (rec.arts.comics.marvel.xbooks was the big one for general discussion, I forget what the one for fanfiction was called) or The Stripe (a Rogue fan club/mailing list).

Shortly after watching the first season of X-Men '97 I was inspired to start writing another wish fulfillment self-insert fanfic, only this time it's first-person from Rogue's point of view; she somehow comes to our world from the comics circa 1994 (shortly after Scott and Jean's wedding), so her relationship with Gambit never went beyond tolerating his presence and shaking her head at his advances. Once again we find that I'm conveniently immune to her powers, and despite the fact that I've been happily married for the last 17 years I still get with Rogue while my wife encourages us. I don't think this one will find its way onto the Internet thanks to the reception I got from the last one.

If it weren't for their relationship, I would have no problem with Gambit. Logically I know they're both fictional characters, but that doesn't stop me from being jealous of Gambit and/or seeing him as a rival for Rogue's affections. (Learning that they got married a few years ago left me with odd emotions; was I more upset that they were married and that Rogue was "off the market", or was I more upset by the fact that this news upset me?) I dislike him, and there was the tiniest part of me (ghoulish as it sounds) that was glad to see what happened to him in X-Men 97; that tiny part was drowned out by the part of me that doesn't like to see Rogue cry, and by the fact that one should not celebrate such things.

Anyway, just getting that off my chest. We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

ALL’S FAIRE IN LUNAR COVE - EVENT RECAP 

The event is now officially over! For those of you who missed our IC Discord Event last night, below you will find a recap filling you in on all of the highlights you missed. With the end of this event, we will return to our regularly scheduled programming meaning that the starter rule has now been reset. The people who post the first 3 starters do not have to reply to previous starters. Feel free to continue and wrap up any previous event threads/discord pairing threads you may have. But, we also strongly encourage you all to begin writing new post-event threads reacting to everything that has gone down. For anyone looking to bring in a new character, acceptances will be back up and running starting this Thursday.

MISERY BUSINESS DISCORD EVENT SPARKNOTES:

NEED TO KNOW:

With the fae's help, everyone awoke from the Pendulum realizing that they had been trapped in nightmares

Poppy and everyone else found out from Kadir that Poppy's grimoire was stolen by Theo

The doors from the Pendulum Playhouse slam open all at once causing those nearest to the door to jump. But, rather than being met with the sight of Kyle or Theo, the Lunar Covians gasp out in horror at the distinct sound of a scurry of rats. Fae flew up into the air. Vampires, werewolves, humans and fae jumped up onto their chairs as a swarm of rats came scurrying in followed shortly after by Kyle Kane. The witch was using his telekinesis to fling props around at the unsuspecting civilians.

If the Lunar Covians thought they had enough to deal with when it came to Kyle and his army of rats, think again. With the doors of the Pendulum wide open, one Theodore Moore emerged and what the Lunar Covians weren't privy to all this time was the fact that Theo, unbeknownst to even himself, has been helping the Catalyst since before Valentine's Day. The Catalyst intentionally let Theo be found, casting a dark magic spell over him before he was released that would allow them to be able to communicate with Theo through his thoughts. But, that's not all. When Theo was rescued and brought back into town, crossing over the border, the spell casted upon him weakened the border, allowing for a hunter to slip in and steal the reports from Town Hall on all of the documented supernaturals' locations from around the world. Theo was the piece of the puzzle the Catalyst needed to enact their Valentine's Day plans and, since then, Theo and Kyle have been working for the Catalyst. Only they don't have to hide their involvement anymore.

Theo charged forwards, attacking people left and right.

Finally after hurting a number of people, he charged at Meena. The two fought and after Theo attempted to strangle Meena, holding a knife to her throat, she ended his life, poetically beheading him since in the dreamscape he tried to behead her.

While everyone watched Theo die, Kyle used it as a cue to impale a metal pipe through Poppy's heart, killing her.

Poppy Reed died. Kyle completed his final task from the Catalyst.

The Catalyst rewarded Kyle by breaking off the resurrected bond they had with Kyle. Only little did Kyle know, the Catalyst's magic was the only thing keeping him alive. Now that the bond had been broken, Kyle had thirty minutes before he died. But, he was not going down without a fight.

The group split into two. One side fought Kyle and the other side determined whether or to resurrect Poppy.

Briar went after Kyle electrocuting him to death.

Alyssa was against Poppy coming back from the dead, while Jasmine and the Reeds held a vote with the rest of the Coven. If everyone voted yes and agreed to the consequences of dark magic, they'd bring Poppy back.

The votes were overwhelmingly for Poppy to be brought back. But, the last vote that was needed was Poppy's. Rohan and Jasmine used their spirit raising to speak with Poppy who agreed to be resurrected.

Jasmine performed the dark magic spell. Poppy gasped for air having been revived. She is still the supreme and a witch. Because Jasmine St. Claire was the one to bring her back to life, Poppy's life is now tied to Jasmine's. If Jasmine dies, Poppy will die. Also, as many of you already know, bringing the dead back to life comes with a cost.

Jasmine St. Claire is currently a coven member. So, since she is in the coven, rather than death coming to claim someone she love's life, the coven were all temporarily not able to access their magic for the next hour. Death also came to claim the life of a coven member as the price for reviving the dead is a life for a life.

Alyssa Reed began to suffocate from across the room of the Playhouse. Briar begged for someone to help Alyssa, but after Alyssa made a public display demanding for her own daughter to remain dead, the vampires chose not to step in.

Alyssa died. The price for performing dark magic was paid.

The Catalyst left everyone with a warning. The message was delivered by Kyle on his final breath - the Catalyst is coming and, if you're not afraid yet, you will be.

THE INJURED:

Bexley- Knocked out by Theo. Needed Briar to wake her back up. - Healed during event

Kui - Arrow in leg during dreamscape (carried over out of dream since they're fae) - Healed during event

Rangi - Axe in back during dreamscape (carried over out of dream since they're fae) - Healed during event

Reese- Reese was tossed into the set wall and knocked unconscious to later be woken up by Briar. - Healed during event

Aaliyah- Shoved by Theo while fighting, - No damage

Kadir- Punched by Theo while fighting, sire bond was severed - Healed during event

Paloma- Flung across the room by Theo. Almost passed out but didn't. - Healed during event

Frankie- telepathically flung into debris by Kyle. - Healed during event

Meena - Bit her own arm to feed Rangi blood, was strangled by Theo for a period of time, before killing him. Sire bond was severed - Healed during event

Ronnie - Slivers of wood were embedded all over her skin.

Jonah- Jonah was thrown across the stage & knocked unconscious. Someone had to carry his unconscious body out.

THE DEATHS:

Poppy- Impaled by a pipe through her heart by Kyle, immediately killing her.

Kyle- Bit by Nico, was electrocuted to death by Briar. Fell to the ground.

Theo- Kadir stabbed/hit Theo, was beheaded by Meena.

Alyssa- Suffocated to death. Death came to claim her as the price of Dark Magic.
