Despite having coming to accept his enemy as your salvation, he couldn’t help but stare at you. Somehow, although you were surrounding yourself with vile filth and had accepted unorthodox practises that Fredka propagated, you still managed to be magnetic to him.

You were seated next to him, a rather … gracious gesture of Amerika. Ivan was well aware that his nemesis had caught on to his intense interest in you and was therefore using it against him. Seating you next to him was a sign of dominance on Alfred’s behalf, a way of taunting. Because both parties knew that you a simmering loathing for anything communist inhabited you.

Amerika was standing up front, rambling on about post-war reconstruction and all that jazz. Beneath all the jargon was the thinly veiled self-worship of the newly anointed boy-king, and at this point it was becoming rather grating, even for the nation’s allies. Which was probably why you found it in yourself to tune out of the meeting for a moment and remark to him:

“It is rather rude to stare at people. Aren’t you of the same opinion, Bragvinski?”

Inwardly, he found himself smiling. It was sardonic and still held some dark amusement. If this was the game you had decided to play, then so be it.

“Possibly. Yet sometimes the palette for interesting sights is rather narrow so in a way I can understand it.”

You quietly snorted at the statement, and started picking lack-lusterly at your bandages. The war had put you through the meat grinder as it had done by nearly everybody, and with your economy so severely damaged, recovery was slow.

“You have a funny way of viewing things. Some would say your focus is misplaced”, you commented, this time turning your head to look at him. There were rings under your eyes and your cheek bones protruded. It didn’t rob you of any of your charm in his eyes.

“Believe me. I simply know my priorities.”

The one thing in the world that would wear down all calmness and focus he would have, would be being so extremely at odds as he would be with you. The distance between the two of your would be so great because of different ideologies, you being so unobtainable because of conflicting believes.

Yet he would be surprised. The cruel irony of him falling for you would fit in with the usual course of his life. Yet that would prevent him from falling ever deeper for you. Because people always crave what they can’t have. The more you would detest him the more he would crave you, until it would a sickening obsession that would rob him of clear thought and make him desperate.

·America would notice this soon enough, having spies everywhere and being far more attentive then he would pretend to be. And as confrontational and driven as he would be, he would use it all against his nemesis. He would tell you of Russia’s interest for you, framing his words so that you would be disgust. Yet he would also send you to deal with Russia, so that the Soviet nation would be taunted and tortured on a psychological level and so that your detest could mature.con

Am frühen Freitagmorgen herrscht im Krater dichter Nebel und wir fragen uns, wie der bei diesen trockenen Wetterverhältnissen wohl entstanden ist. Zehn Minuten später kündigt sich in der mittlerweile klaren Luft bereits wieder die Hitze an. Häuptling Sitting Bull, der anscheinend auf diesem historischen Platz gelebt hat, könnte uns das Phänomen vielleicht erklären.

Auf der Weiterfahrt treffen wir auf einen Kanadier, der sich als Waffennarr entpuppt: Deutsche Waffen seien die allerbesten, viel präziser und zuverlässiger als jede nordamerikanische Waffe, er besitze jede Menge davon. Da können wir wenig zum Gespräch beitragen, denn außer ein paar leidlich scharfen Küchenmessern, zwei abgewetzten Scheren und einem Stück hartem Schlauch am Eingang besitzen wir nicht Adäquates zur Selbstverteidigung, geschweige denn zum Jagen. Er bemängelt noch unsere fehlende Aircondition im Auto und hält uns ganz offensichtlich für zwei rückständige Hinterwäldler, die nicht wissen, worauf es ankommt im Leben.

Rehe und Hirsche werden zu unseren ständigen Begleitern, sie hüpfen über die Straße oder am Straßenrand entlang und zeigen keine große Scheu vor Autos.

Wir fahren in den Westblock des Grasslands National Park und fahren die Eco-Scenic-Runde, auf der es unter anderem wiederangesiedelte Büffel zu sehen geben soll.

Wir halten zuerst an einer riesigen Kolonie von Präriehunden und ihren Bauten. Die Bratwürste sind hier wesentlich größer als die, die wir bisher zu Gesicht bekommen haben und scheinen wesentlich träger. Sie sind bekannt dafür, kleinere Präriehunde zu töten, um ihrer eigenen Art das Überleben zu sichern. Sie stehen aufrecht und frech an ihren Höhlen und scheinen Besuch gewöhnt zu sein.

Auf der Scenic-Runde biegen wir irgendwo falsch ab und fahren deshalb ca. 80 Kilometer rund um den Park, ohne einen einzigen Büffel zu Gesicht zu bekommen. Vielleicht war es denen ja auch zu heiß und sie haben sich verkrochen. Wir sehen einen Kojoten, der sich gemächlich ins Gebüsch verzieht. Große Raubvögel sitzen bewegungslos auf Zaunposten und warten vermutlich auf Beute oder auf kühlere Temperaturen.

Als wir in dem Ort Val Marie auf einem kleinen Campground ankommen, fühlen wir uns jedenfalls wie Dörrobst. Wir sind froh über die Duschen, die es hier gibt.

Eine Frau kommt vorbei und bietet uns an, ab zehn Uhr einen Western anzuschauen, der im Ort in einem Freilichtkino gezeigt wird. Aber um zehn ist es leider immer noch glühend heiß, die Moskitos sind aggressiv und wir sind müde.

Am Samstag fahren wir weiter nach Westen, dicht an der US-Grenze entlang. Wir suchen einen Laden, in dem wir was einkaufen können, aber auf der Strecke gibt es keine größeren Orte mit Geschäften. Wir finden am Cypress-Lake einen Platz nahe des Sees und gehen erst mal schwimmen. Leider ist das Wasser trotz des riesigen Sees und der frischen Wassertemperatur ziemlich algig und trotz des starken Windes bietet es sich moskitotechnisch absolut an, im Auto zu bleiben. Am späten Abend wird es endlich kühler, aber für morgen sind noch höhere Temperaturen angesagt Präriehundstage!
