Yeah, the fact that it's a church is secondary. Though I was taught in art history class that a church's beauty was historically supposed to be really important, as it supposedly showed reverence for God and his creations (especially when they started adding more windows and stained glass in particular). So there is a teeny bit of "if church why so ugly" in the back of my mind.

Now, as to why I think beauty is desirable in architecture:

There's scientific reasearch that says that how buildings look can affect our well-being (both physical and mental). Source 2

Ugly designing can also affect the crime rates of an area.

It's not surprising. Would you rather live somewhere devoid of colour, ugly and bland or somewhere beautiful? There's a reason why people hate cookie-cutter homes.

Roman Catholics and Orthodox have got to knock it off with "Protestants have brutalist corporate churches". A particular modern strain of Protestantism has hideous modern churches. It's a depressingly common strain, and arguably the dominant one in America, but it's either ignorant or dishonest to pretend as though all Protestants have ugly churches.
