me when . i wanna yap about eugene and sunny bc i'm thinking about them again and i like writing about them together bc i think more people should explore their dynamic since there's a lot to work with i feel but i don't feel like writing any of my list of one-shots ideas i have for them rn (...and also bc i need to finish up writing fine, great bc sighs i guess i'm almost done with that fic /lh)

i don't think i've made it any secret that eugene and sunny are my favourites from this game and like. i Do really love their individual characters obviously but honestly thinking about their dynamic (or at least. potential one pre-sunshine update bc there wasn't thaaat much) made me like them more tbh?

like. i think it's very interesting how landkeepers in general and eugene's feelings of emptiness and needing a purpose are meant to parallel one another, and the sunshine update pretty much indirectly confirmed that with the lore regarding landkeepers, to me at least. eugene's whole arc of finding purpose in creating the community garden, by putting good in the world instead of trying to force himself to fit a hero role placed upon himself by his own standards. landkeepers being ordinary people turned into mammon's vessels, their misery being taken advantage of and made only to serve one purpose. and then there's sunny, being someone who was forced into the role of being mammon's pawn, to be someone who someone else wanted her to be.

even if the circumstances are different, i think it's definitely worth looking into the fact that they both are forced to play roles that aren't them - and how they eventually grow past that with help, with eugene eventually opening up to the player leading up to the garden scene, and sunny becoming more confident in being sunny. and i don't know, it's just...very interesting to me that they have things in common there, and it's something that i think about even more now that sunny's a partner. because with her added dialogue, i don't think it's far-fetched to say that it's implied that she's the closest with kayleigh and eugene? after all, her 5 hearts cutscene directly names them, and she even has exclusive dialogue if you've romanced either of them. which...honestly makes sense, considering kayleigh and eugene are always in the cutscenes for sunny's initial quest, while any other partner you might bring is optional. and sunny's dialogue if you romance eugene, it's...actually pretty interesting to me?

for those who haven't seen it, this is it:

"You and Eugene are close, aren’t you? I thought so. Eugene is sure of himself in many ways, and not so much in others… I think you are someone who would help bring out the best in him. The two of you are a good pair, I believe…"

idk, it made me think a lot since...sunny directly calls attention to his struggles. but in the kayleigh romance exclusive dialogue, she doesn't - she comments on how she's happy that two of her friends are close, and mentions how having a bond like that sounds nice. but with eugene, she brings up his struggles, even if not naming them.

which i think about a lot, considering...how closely guarded eugene seems to be regarding those. it takes until his quest is complete for those insecurities to come to light, and for most, that fight is typically one of the last archangels you'll fight (...assuming you're playing the game normally. i did not play this game normally bc mammon was the 3rd archangel i fought iirc). it takes an archangel for him to finally let his guard down enough and talk about his insecurities, even if only for a little. and while yeah, i'm sure sunny might also just be observant about those sort of things, i think it...also kind of indirectly shows that there's definitely some level of trust that he's probably let his guard down around her enough to at least give her some sort of hint about that? if not just briefly talking about it with her.

and by that alone it's enough for me to think, "oh, they're probably close in some way then", but it makes me think more when it comes down to their history with one another while on new wirral. because until sunny stumbled into the cafe and got a makeover, they were pretty much enemies until then. which makes the potential dynamic between them very interesting to me, since there's more of a history there that's more personal - especially with sunny being confirmed to be one of the landkeepers eugene confronts in the beginning cutscene, and with landkeepers paralleling what eugene thinks about himself, with him being a hollow person and all. so their cafe interaction makes me think a lot about sunny's lines during it, particularly when she brings up how she's glad that they're friends now.

this isn't even getting into their one date cutscene, because there's...definitely a bit i can pull from with that too. or at least stuff i can pick out and make educated guesses on. even though i generally don't look at it considering i romance eugene on almost all of my saves lol

...but can i just say right off the bat that the fact that eugene probably was the one to ask her out on the date in the first place is crazy to me bc like. looks at him. looks at his romance route. i struggle to believe that /hj

that aside, i think the fact that they can go on a date if you don't romance eugene kind of...says something in of itself about the fact that they're close? idk. i know you don't need to be close in order to go on a date with someone, but i feel like with how eugene acts with romance in general (just. very nervous about it) and that sunny does outright call them friends, i don't think it's unreasonable to guess that they're pretty friendly with one another? also when considering that sunny did say she enjoyed the date, even if the outcome was a "i don't think i'm currently ready for this" thing. like i think with knowing what was given with eugene's romance route and the fact that sunny did agree in the first place, i want to assume that they're. definitely close to some degree by that point

all of this is to say, i really do like what's presented in-game with eugene and sunny's relationship and thinking about it more in-depth with the scenes given. there's something very interesting to me about exploring their relationship given their similarities and their history together, so i think i'm always gonna gravitate towards writing about them in my one-shots no matter what because of that, lol (...you can tell bc i think it's. quite literally my own fault that the eugene & sunny tag on ao3 is canonized now. bc i keep writing about them. the power of autism i guess). something about how they both were or felt empty, needed some form of purpose in their lives and was given that through the landkeepers in their own ways, but grew as people once they were given the chance to properly break away from that mold that was presented as the only option for themselves (or at least, with how eugene seemed to view his vigilante act with the landkeepers while he was stuck on new wirral).

i wanted to yap about these two, since. i don't see a lot of stuff about these two specifically that isn't from me yelling about them, lmao (wonderful reminder of my wof dragonslayer days, really /hj). and when i do see the rare thing it's usually about the date scene or shipping. which i personally don't care much for even if romantic sunny/eugene has grown on me a little bit (bc sunny and eugene will always be queerplatonic to me always and forever sorry). but also i just generally like seeing stuff about these two so i guess that doesn't matter too much atp lol

i can happily do a little brief explanation!

so for context, this whole AU was made by me & @broareweabouttoviberightnow , they made a LOVELY in-depth post about the actual story, I'll go more into like the basis lines of their actual characters here since we don't exactly have much actual context other THAN their storyline atm

as it is known, this entire au revolves around the story rewriting of the movie called The Passenger (lovely film btw, absolutely reccomend. it's the entire basis for this au) and for replacement of Randy & Benson, we've found Johnny & Dallas. For Lisa there's Ponyboy, for Ms Beard there's Cherry and Bob (it's an odd separation), and there's a funny Buck cameo somewhere in there too for shits n' gigs. hehehe.

The AU basically plays out as: Johnny kills Bob and goes to prison for ABOUT 5 years. Ponyboy and him still experienced everything, but they never go to the church. Johnny just simply turns himself in and does his time (which for manslaughter, isn't as much as you'd think. so. 5 years.)

after those years pass, he finds himself working at a burger restaurant with dallas winston and some other background characters and THERE is where all the canon events appear that brodallas (user, not character) discusses in THEIR post.

our au has a bit of two endings at the moment since we wanted to explore more of their dynamics — in the original ending that aligns with the movie, dallas misfires on johnny and he bleeds out, and then he decides to die to a cop suicide. they both die in the end just like they're supposed to.

IN THE OTHER ending, it's kinda just us fucking around with them running away from society and hiding off from the cops in their partners in crime era 😭 very funny, very silly, and also really tragic every time we try to divulge in it /silly

the AU isn't intentionally jally centric, because it came as a spurse of character connections. dallas has a UNNERVING amount of similarities to benson. and randy with johnny. there's a lot of discussion that can be made in there, but most of it is just connecting dots and filling up their collective plot holes so they can align better. blah. either way, when you look at benson & randy (fun fact, their shipname is Stockroom Syndrome. if that tells you anything about THEIR dynamic.) you kinda unfortunately have to shove dallas & johnny together like that too 💀 but it works out fun in the end, i promise

either way though the au has completely rotted our brains and we're both having SO MUCH FUN, i am SO DELIGHTED people are interested in this fuckass little story because GAHHHH !!! it is everything and more to me, and has been these past... 2... weeks... giggling

writing about Bruce's speculations in chapter 5 of WTNS was the best part of his POV hands down. It meant I got to force everyone to listen to me infodump about my in-world lore and in some cases character studies, and they couldn't do anything but listen because it was vital to the chapter.

Danny isn't gonna go on an in-depth internal monologue about blood blossoms because he already knows what they are and what they do. So unless prompted, he's not gonna explain them in detail. He's also not gonna go into detail about what Vlad does or what his motivations are because he already knows Vlad and has a pretty good grasp on why he does shit. (although the blood blossoms did absolutely throw him for a loop)

BRUCE meanwhile doesn't know any of this stuff. So he's got to research Vlad and Blood Blossoms and all this stuff and then form his own conclusions and theories from that. It also makes an extra challenge for myself because i have to remember not to meta and keep in mind that he doesn't have the same knowledge on ghost stuff as Danny, and thus everything he knows is from a limited lens.

It's great, it's fantastic, it's my enrichment. Coming up with conclusions for Bruce to come to with the info he's got on hand is delightful. It's like im playing logic puzzles.

What are your thoughts on Hirsch?

i do genuinely respect him a lot (the fact that a bunch of the show was improvised is both horrifying and kinda amazing, standout examples being ford himself being written on the fly and also the last mabelcorn being written in a day) and love that he's insistent on the importance of found family and platonic affection, and that he's furious when people devalue family relationships if they're not directly blood related

but also a bunch of his ford takes are pretty iffy (even if he's gotten somewhat better about him recently) and he's pretty "two steps forwards, a bunch of shuffles back" about treating the abusive relationships he writes cos it was like "oh he's talking about it normally for the panels--" and then that charity stream was basically a cannonball to any goodwill he built up

also god damn he's bad with writing romance and picking side ships in general (tad/woodpecker guy is the most 'picked random names outta a hat' shit), especially when he's fully aware that it gets fans sidetracked from the main points he's trying to make with the series
