Watching the ending to the last episode seemed very familiar to me. I normally skip through bits of my C2 watching because I've seen it so often but ouch my Widowjest heart in these moments, and now Callowmore looks a little shaken. I did like the way they called Fearne free though, like she belongs to no one. I hope this is like Percy's contract in C1 where there was a contract that they wanted but it came with extra clauses/benefits should he need them.

I have a theory why zerxmodeus won this while asmodeus lost the poll versus kir.

Asmodeus's greatest weakness is silly little guys (see: changebringer, braius). He dominates against those who take themselves seriously but anyone with the spirit of a loony toonz character activates the "rule of funny" effect (aka the emily axford sent from hell to kill brennan lee mulligan effect): if his defeat would result in the funniest possible outcome, then he will loose. Im talking about if you threw a banana peel in front of him the rules of the universe would bend to ensure he slips on it.

Unfortunately for widowjest, Caleb's sad boi traumatized wet cat aura is strong enough to counteract jester's silly little guy energy, thereby allowing zerxmodeus to win through the power of toxic yaoi.

I love the fact that widowjest still pops up on my dash even now. And lately there's been some things popping up that made me go back to an old fic I was working on. Of course after seeing everything through for season two it's likely going to be really different from how I originally wanted it to be... But that's okay!

Everything that might have shown he was once Bren Ermendrud in any official capacity has either literally burned, or is so deeply lost to Trent Ikithon’s machinations that it might as well have gone up in flames.

Astarion assumes that he is imagining the tiefling when he sees her appear in the corner of the study. He’s doing his utmost, half-delirious with pain, to stay silent beneath his Master's attentions. He can’t recall producing visions of women with bleeding throats and furious gazes whilst being tortured before, but as he looks up at her, bleary-eyed, he thinks that surely there is a first time for everything.

THE PATTERN:

Well, I basically never start with dialogue. Literally the only story that starts with that is Liebe ist Fürsorge, and that is (checks notes) 5 years old. I set a scene first, i guess, i do not drop you in the middle of Something Already Happening? is that anything. (it is nothing, things are happening i just want everyone to be quiet at first)

And boy, i do love to include the POV character's name or nickname in the first line almost every single time huh. Besides that hhhhh i dont know i just work here

So there's a poll going around re: enjoyment of fan works and their distance from canon, specifically ship-focused. And while I'd like to interact with it, the options seem COMPLETELY unrelated to the question????

All of the options are based on canonical relationships--have they spoken before? How often? Is one of them a side character with two lines?

But that's not what makes a ship 'canon compliant' to me. Other than the most boring 'did they kiss at the end' manner, which isn't always an actual thing especially with queer ships. Like, by that logic Korasami and even Kataang aren't canon in the scope of their respective og shows.

I saw someone say that they ship Widowjest and think that it's degrees of separation from canon???? No it aint! It wasn't end game but it can damn well be written with the characters being canon compliant, even if the situation is not.

Thats the core of it, for me. It's that canon when it comes to ships is not defined by canon interaction with each other, but canon consistency of each of their behavior. A ship of Protagonist A/Side Character With 2 Lines can be canon compliant with maaaaaaaybe a couple degrees of separation, as long as their characterization is consistent. In my mind, while it would have to be labeled 'canon divergent' it would still feel 'canonical' to me.

There's a poll option to the tune of 'I'm willing to bend canon and/or characterization to make it work'. Those are two different things!!!?! You bend one and it's the same people in a tiny different au. You bend the other and you have a couple of--potentially compelling-- OCs. So that option makes no sense in this context?!

Idk. I've seen this thing go by all week and it's been making me want to put a grouchy essay in the tags. But that's rude so here's this instead.

I love replaying C2 episodes just so I can watch the whole top table (i.e. Fjord/Beau/Caleb AND Travis/Marisha/Liam) slowly get smitten by the little blue tiefling. As they should.

The trio worrying about Jester post-kidnapping as she dances in the middle of the tavern by herself, sans music. (2x30)

Them melting into a puddle of goo when Jester announced her arrival at the Ruby of the Sea's home by calling herself the "Little Sapphire". (2x33)

Jester telling her story about the craziest thing she's ever seen a.k.a. the bug story. (2x38)

When The Gentleman finally admits to his past with Marion, and when he and Jester share a tearful conversation about him being her father but not really. (2x85)

The alarm on their faces when The Traveler told Jester that he would take her with him (to realms and planes far far away) if he was ever to leave. (2x95)

Eventually Beau tells Yasha about the time she thought she was in love with Jester, only to hear back that, of course, Yasha also had a crush on Jester for a while there. One day they joke about it with Caleb over dinner, and the shy smile they see on his face tells them that oh my god, you too?!

Years down the line, during a reunion, Jester is adamant everyone has to give an answer to her next question: "Alright you guys, time for a good ol' zone of truth. Who had a crush on me back when we used to travel together?"

The entire Mighty Nein shares timid looks, with the exception of Fjord, before everyone erupts in laughter.

Fjord is the one to yell out in surprise "EVERYONE?! No way. Caduceus? Essek??!!"

Both men shrug and nod, with smiles on their faces.

"Fjord, I did tell you about it that one time during Travellercon. We've all comiserated about it together at this point", Beau offers.

Jester stands up with wide eyes, looking absolutely taken aback. In fact, she looks almost betrayed: "WHAT!!!! THE FUCK!! Why am I the last one to know about this?"

I saw your post on Widowjest and Fjorester and I wanted to make a hear me out lmao

TLDR: this became a Fjord and Jester mini essay lol all I just wanted to point out was that it's not just Fjord changed by their relationship. And honestly even with everything I said, I can totally see why people would prefer another dynamic, and I respect that.

I also like Caleb and Jester together, I think they're very sweet to each other. But I also like Fjord and Jester, and I don't necessarily agree with the idea that only Fjord is changed by their relationship/dynamic. And if anything, a lot of Fjord's changes happen with Caduceus and Wildmother. That realization that the position he was in was not healthy and trying to find a way out of it. Jester mostly plays support, that message with Vandren being the catalyst of his change and everything after is mostly Jester hyping him up (also I'm just obsessed with that conversation of theirs in the kiln, neither of them missed a beat, Travis and Laura killed it). In turn, Fjord mostly plays guardian to Jester and her stuff with Artagan and Babenon. Jester asks Fjord about whether it would be selfish of her to spend time with the Gentleman and he's the one to reassure her and direct the conversation of the group about that later on. He is the one most openly concerned about the Traveller, but he also encourages Jester to talk about what it is exactly he does for her (the whole say three things thing) and thinks it's a good thing. But still, a lot of that development is through Jester's effort.

Honestly I'm not sure if I make sense hahahaha. I just wanted to highlight that they do affect each other, and that by the time the confession happens they have grown enough to make it so satisfying to watch. Fjord working towards becoming himself, what he wants to be without copying someone to be accepted; Jester showing more of her vulnerabilities and loneliness without worrying about putting a happy front. Also, the parallel of Fjord trying to find Vandren and Jester looking for her father then both finding family with the Nein is very sweet. I think exasperated-but-still-hopelessly-in-love Fjord that can both pull Jester back from going too far but also will entertain her regardless with chaotic-but-knows-when-to-be-sweet Jester that is open with her love remind Fjord the value of life are goshdarn cute together.

I think it's one of the more realistic relationships in CR, with them starting as confidants, with how they start to really see the other during the jellyfish scene, their trust in each other being shaken up and down while on the sea and in Rohsana, then it being built back when they start being more honest with each other, accepting each other for who they are and are becoming. Jester's infatuation turning into genuine friendliness and then love; Fjord's obliviousness turning into affection and then love. A slow build up where neither really depended too much on the other for their individual growth. That confession scene was 10/10 honestly. Fjord in the prev episode not wanting to do anything without dealing with his past but all of it going out the window when Jester's life force got taken, and him being the one to really highlight how wild it is other than compliment her. Him starting with showing his concern for her life, how much he cares about her, Jester trying to play it off but Fjord really going for it. Jester remaining firm in what she wants to do with Aeor. It's just so damn good lmao
