Okay so this post is for Artists that are trying to save some money while vending at conventions.

A few cons that I've gone to have been charging extra for wifi access. (Extra costs?! In THIS economy??) This has lead to some artists/vendors paying the extra cost to use said wifi, or to use their phones as a hotspot (your phone bill!! nooo!!!) or having to switch to cash only (you might lose on sales! also having to do MORE math? plus the trips to the bank to get change?? 😭).

May I present to you: Library Hotspots!

This, of course, hinges on your local library having said service. Luckily, a good chunk of them do! Check your local library if they have hotspots to borrow. If they don't- ask them wtf why not? (DON'T ACTUALLY DO THAT. Write them a nice email saying you're a patron that is interested in this service. That will show their administration that they should invest in hotspots).

Okay so you've checked your library's website and it DOES have hotspots you can borrow- what now? Check the policy for borrowing their hotspots! They often let you know how long you can borrow the hotspot for AND you might be able to request one through an online form. (Listen I get phone anxiety so this is a bonus for me). Now all you have to do is wait to get a notification to pick up your hotspot, pick it up, test it out with your vending equipment (important step!), take it with you to your next convention/vendor event, use it, and finally bring it back to the library once you're done!

okay okay okay so those were a lot of steps. BUT! would you rather be saddled with unexpected costs of having to pay for convention wifi? I sure wouldn't with how expensive everything is already 😭

hi! saw gif reqs are open and while i don't have anything specific atm i was wondering if you could talk about how you make them? they're always so clean cut thanks!!

ohh thank you!! my process is really unnecessarily complicated lol

first, i upload my clips to DaVinci Resolve and cut them to the right length. i usually first make rough cuts (e.g. when the camera angle changes), look for the shortest clip that i still absolutely want to be in the gifset, and base the length of all the gifs on that. if the shortest clip is too long for one gif, the length is decided based purely on vibes (usually a round number bc i've decided that is easier even though it literally makes no difference if a clip is exactly 3 seconds or 2:24).

then i export them as MP4 (because DVR turns all gifs into 30+mb files) and upload them to Ezgif (website). usually, i just convert MP4 to GIF (20 frames per second — optimise them if they're over 10mb).

unfortunately, this sometimes wrecks the colouring, so what i then do is convert MP4 to PNG (again 20 frames per second) and put them into Gifski (download here), which makes really nice and crisp gifs (i only do this when Ezgif turns my gifs ugly or when it's something i REALLY care about that i want to have extra pretty gifs. if i'm just giffing a Taskmaster bit that i found funny, i won't go through all this trouble bc it takes fucking forever and those gif sets are comedy-based, not aesthetics-based).

Ive pretty much stopped using the app versions of youtube, pinterest, and tumblr, because when running them in browser with an ad blocker (works perfectly on both mobile and desktop) there are no meaningful differences between them!! If ads are screwing your data over that badly, id really really recommend migrating to the browser version. I use firefox but there shouldn't be much difference in setting it up if you use a different browser, literally the single component needed is for it to support ublock origin

i do have an adblocker for safari [i mostly use my ipad and firefox is kinda annoying on mobile in my experience] so i might just do that… my ipad runs kinda slow these days because i’ve had it for almost 8 years and that in turn makes browsers kinda slow but tbh the tumblr app is glitchy as hell for me anyway [buttons are Constantly randomly disappearing] so i’ve been considering switching to just using the browser version or the web app anyway, since my adblocker works in the web app too 🤔
