A lot has been already made of the comparisons between Spamton Deltarune and Flowey Undertale. Obsessed with acquiring the Player Character's SOUL, playing a similar narrative role in the Murder Routes of each game/chapter, the visual similarities between the wires and strings to Flowey's vines (to the point the musical track related to them is literally called "Digital Roots") and Spamton even kinda paraphrasing some of Flowey's lines in his own... Spamtony way.

So now I'm thinking about how Flowey/Asriel and Gerson/the Hammer of Justice really are mirror images of each other.

These are both examples of Monsters being resurrected via their Symbolic-Objects-Covered-in-Dust being exposed to the Big Metaphysical Force of the game, Asriel was revived via Determination and Gerson was revived via the Dark. They're both even named after their Objects (a Flower and a Hammer).

You can even draw comparisons between Asriel being a young child who died under tragic circumstances, leaving behind his grieving parents, while Gerson was an old man who seemed to have died from natural circumstances and left behind his son.

And the fact that Flowers are generally seen as nice, innocent and peaceful, while Flowey is the cruel antagonist of his game. Meanwhile, Hammers generally symbolize violence and brute strength, while the Hammer of Justice is a helpful and scholarly mentor.

And even kinda the fact that they both dabble in misdirection. Flowey tries to present himself as a helpful tutorial character as a trap for Frisk. The Hammer of Justice presents himself as a hindrance and a Load to the Three Heroes so he can secretly mentor them.

...I was originally thinking of presenting their animating forces, the Dark and Determination, as also kinda opposites from each other. Since Queen's speech in Chapter 2, I've been assuming Determination is a trait/concept associated with Light (since Queen said "the Power of Determination" is something all Lightners possess).

But... with Ralsei's explanation of Darkners in Chapter 3 including a creature obviously inspired by the Amalgamates (another result of Alphys Undertale's experiments with Determination)

And then the Final Boss of Chapter 4 being a Titan, a being that is like the Dark incarnation of the Dark itself, having a very obvious and very prominent SAVE POINT Motif

...I am beginning to wonder if Determination and Dark are less mirror opposites and more two sides of the same coin.

It's still Our Wonderland and the focus is Orlam, things are going to steeply go downhill from here (also I found it super hard to draw the armour so I drew more zoomed in)

The rule maker (given Bucks... Not doing anything) and enforcer of the underground is a bit... Less than stable and the first character encountered that wants to bring harm to Iggy.

While he finds the way he can do anything he wants extremely fun, commanding the rabbit guards around like it's going out of style, he would love to rip the lovely little soul out of the fallen and use the wish to make himself king. He knows that Bucks has multiple wishes but he's at least smart enough not to cross the queen.

He is a very effective guard, anyone he hunts down is never seen again, though there is a lot of litter around, mostly bones... Wonder where that comes from. At least Cecil is nice enough to clear up the bones for his collection!

Despite the change of attitude, a pacifist Iggy can hang out with him at Cecil's request resulting in a similar but much more tense scene where Orlam casually emphasises violent words while staring at Iggy, stopping himself from actually doing anything because he cares enough not to do anything against Cecil (otherwise he'd be happy to do some horribly violent things in the comfort of his own home). If Iggy is not a pacifist, Cecil will still try to arrange the hang out but will see the look on Orlam's face and call it off.

Instead of using a spear, he uses a cattle prod wrapped in barbed wire (what he uses to torture Iggy in act 2) including in chase sequences which does factor a bit into his fights.

No matter which version of the fight is done, he starts by throwing down a cattle prod for Iggy to use, if Iggy attacks without picking it up or tries to stall, Orlam will attack Iggy, causing barbs to wrap around the battle box and deal a damaging shock after a couple of seconds, between these attacks, Iggy momentarily blacks out (using the effect that the sans fight uses) before the formation of the barbs change. The barbs attack gets harder the more times it is triggered. Also in both fights, he tries to use everything he has to make Iggy go green with envy (or disgust) before attacking the soul in his own special way.

The regular fight has Orlam give a grand speech about how he's going to rip Iggy's soul from his chest before using the wish to rule the underground!

The murder route features Orlam the Unyielding (I couldn't find a good word beginning with O, if anyone knows one then please throw it and I'll use that in future). Much like how it goes in Undertale, Iggy starts a fight with the tomato headed child (this version's Monster Kid), when he goes to strike, he finds his attack has resulted in a hole where Orlam's heart should be. Orlam collapses before struggling to get back up, his whole body, even his clothes, have started to lose their colour, blood leaks from his mouth and black ooze slowly dribbles out of the hole in his chest. He attacks slower but much harder, his attack patterns becoming more complex and more freely using his cattle prod directly on Iggy.

If he is killed, he maniacally laughs that he'll never die and he will get the wish no matter what. Even if he has to skewer Iggy from behind.

If he is spared (same as Undyne, run away) he gets distracted when he sees Genzou and they (Orlam's side only) start to have a big argument, letting Iggy run into Hotland.

Next up is probably Gidget, I've decided to combine Alphys and Mettaton into a dual persona type deal so Gidget's part will be more different but more to combining the characters than throwing anything else in. Currently the only major plot differences are relating to the lack of Asriel and what the flower is, it's still related to the true lab, don't worry about that but if the sealed don't turn to dust, what the heck is in that lab?

And don't worry about the visuals, back to normal style for Gidget :3

HDM Season 1 Finale:

I am taking a moment to state that I am so mad I have never seen the aurora. A few times they said it came down this far south and we went looking for it, but we never succeeded.

I'm not sure if Asriel is his first name or his last name and at this point I'm too afraid to ask. In the show they're suggesting Belaqua is his surname too (I guess he was her fake *paternal* uncle?) but it never comes up in the books.

Show!Will is 15???? I mean, the actor is clearly not 12, but I thought they might be asking us to suspend our disbelief. How old is show!Lyra meant to be? She looks younger.

Asriel says "I did not send for you" when he sees Lyra but relaxes when he sees Roger, who he also did not send for, so presumably he sent a request for a completely different child to murder. His child murder Grubhub guy is really late.

Asriel having to slowly push the guillotine down himself for his separation machine just to add to the drama... seems inefficient. Bad engineering. In the book didn't he do it with wires.

No bridge???

So like. Did Asriel even consider for a second asking for volunteers for his experiment. Even the Church gets that one priest who willingly severs himself to blow up the quantum entanglement bomb. Did Asriel ask around before deciding child murder was the way to go? Surely someone is willing to possibly die to strike a blow against god.

Their cutting between storylines remains abrupt and awkward sometimes.

Will is a mood for interrupting his brooding, terror, and confusion to go look at a cat

Overall, pretty good so far! I had quibbles with various episodes, but my biggest complaint remains Mrs. Coulter. She's too clearly unraveling, when a recurring thing in the books is that she's so charming and charismatic she wraps everyone around her finger even when they should know better. I can't buy this Mrs. Coulter conning The Metatron.

Okay so...

😶A random headcanon about Chara

Chara is a bit of a technophobe. Not so much for big analogue machines with wires and gears found in Gaster's lab but the common amenities of the household...phones, computers, consoles... what are these things? How do they work? What in the angel's name is even the appeal?

They're like someone's 80 year old grandma trying and failing to understand these horrid newfangled human devices...

You leave them alone in a room with a laptop for less than a minute and they will download a deadly virus just trying to log on...

Asriel's doing something on the computer and Chara is leaning over his shoulder, completely dumbfounded, trying to understand (you can imagine little question marks floating above their head here...)

Chara's reaction to any sort of memes or social media or internet lingo never failed to amuse Asriel

Especially when Asriel shows them this meme and Chara makes the exact same face and Azzy cannot stop laughing

Let's just say that Chara Dreemurr has many skills (I sometimes joke that they have the exact skillset that would make them a wicked cultured anime villain, (as they should be)) but understanding the internet is certainly not one of them.

Makes sense, though, that they wouldn't really get modern amenities. Back on the surface, their parents house had nothing newer than a gramophone, and they never left the house or interacted meaningfully with anyone else (humans are all evil, manipulative creatures, they say...while working on a sample size of about two)

And more than that, they've certainly never interacted with anyone their age which is what leads them to going in to monster school with an attitude of "teenagers are probably interested in the same things as me, like rules and authority!"

Ahem, back on track...

Post-pacifist, Frisk and Asriel use Chara's lack of knowledge with anything internet to tease them relentlessly...

Frisk becomes a deez nuts joke dispenser for like two weeks after learning this, Flowey tries to convince Chara that kys stands for keep yourself safe and that you should totally use it in casual conversation and Frisk tries to rickroll Chara only for it to go completely over their head and they somehow take it as an actual love confession and "Oh! This is incredibly sweet dear and I certainly cannot blame you for your feelings but is this really how...(they did not like the song)" And Frisk is just like 'it was supposed to be a meme...!? But..." (uses the opportunity to start flirting). Also if there's a certain new joke or trick going around, you can gaurantee that Chara is the only one in the friend group that hasn't heard of it which makes them always the prime target.

Frisk or Asriel find videos like "try and say Coca-Cola without your lips touching" or "how the hell you spell Chauffeur?" (which is particularly funny as Frisk would definitely call them fancy pants) to try on Chara and then they both burst out laughing at the fact that Chara even fell for the trap and actually forgetting to give the punchline.

Now, you might be wondering is it really that funny? Is the fact that your sibling or friend still calls emojis electric stickers at like 18 (5 years since they came back to life) really worth breaking your ribs (or petals) laughing over? but they're both annoying little gits and honestly...neither of them like Chara very much (not to start with anyway)

It's basically like "Typo in the group chat! Get their ass" but like...almost all the time

It's times like this that Chara wonders if this timeline is actually their personal hell for their crimes of emotional manipulation and attempted murder

apparently, the angel gives their most socially embarassing moments to their most dependent on positive affection soldiers (oh Chara buddy i'm so sorry)

related to this post I made last night (I said this to a pal in the replies but I wanna post here too):

something feels meaningful about the way Frisk's identity works across routes.

Neutral: Nothing. Nothing on who this child is. They escape the underground and you don't even see where they went.

True Pacifist: Frisk reveals their own name to Asriel. Here and only here.

Genocide: a lot of stuff to talk about and I definitely need to study like all or the text and dialogue (which is hard for someone like me who doesn't want to play Genocide firsthand-) but to cut things short: In Genocide, as you kill the underground, you kill Frisk along with it.

It kinda makes me think of Deltarune Chapter 2 and that one line of dialogue from Berdly if you get through Queen's fight peacefully:

"Thanks to... my comrades' kindness... their MERCY!"

And then he rips out Queen's control wire by himself.

It feels like there's a parallel to Frisk there. It was thanks to your mercy that they were able to free themself in the end. That they were able to give themself their own name.

but the further you get from total Mercy, the more they lose themself. Even the most peaceful of neutral routes requires Asgore to die. to my knowledge, clearing Queen's fight peacefully/getting this dialogue from Berdly only happens if you didn't beat him violently in either of his other fights either. I haven't tested this myself but this is what I've read. He still breaks his arm

you have to "true pacifist" the bird (though you can still beat up the rest of the cyber world if you want that doesn't affect this I think-)

On top of the True Pacifist Route being the only route where monsters are freed from the Underground... what's with the correlation between mercy and freedom?

The Golden Compass, Chapter 23 - The Bridge to the Stars

In which one chapter ends, and a new one is implied.

Lyra is scared, and overwhelmed. This task is too much for her and Pan alone. She spends at least a few minutes crying and thinking about why adults would do such things to kids.(1) They watch the aurora, which seems more intense tonight than ever, and the city is very clearly visible. Then, they keep climbing.

At long last, Pan in owl form spots Lord Asriel and Roger just on the other side of the peak they're nearly to. Then, the aurora flickers, and Lyra can feel something in the air, which must be Dust, and she hears someone calling her name.

Lyra runs as hard as she can, Pan changing forms completely unpredictably beside her. She spots Asriel twisting wires together to complete his setup, his daemon holding Roger's in her mouth. As he works, the aurora brightens again, as though it's under his direct control. A witch's daemon is helping him, as well.

The children start fighting Asriel, but it's no use. A part of the cliff collapses under Lyra, hiding her mostly from view but allowing her a peek as the story closes out. As the electrified knife starts to cut Roger's daemon away from him, a jet of energy shoots up, and the aurora tears, a cosmic rending with a noise to match, and then sunlight shines…

…on the fur of a golden monkey.

A golden monkey who reaches out to a snow leopard, just as Mrs. Coulter and Lord Asriel reach out to each other.(2)

Mrs. Coulter says the Church will shut it all down when they find out, but Asriel is beyond caring, they can't stop him like he's a child. She fears being caught, the others know where she went.(3) He invites her to go with him. She hesitates, and he says her own daughter would go, and put her mother to shame. Mrs. Coulter regrets leaving Lyra's care too late, not being able to make it work. They continue this for a while, in between kissing almost angrily.

In the end, she tells him no, she'll stay here.

And at that, Asriel turns and walks away, without so much as a fraction of a second's hesitation or a glance backward. Mrs. Coulter weeps, Lyra can even see that they're real tears from her vantage point, as she heads back down the mountain.

Then, Lyra looks up, and sees that the aurora has calmed, and the sky seems almost brand new. Through the doorway, the other world's sun shines down on Roger's lifeless face. Lyra doesn't realize Pan's trying to get her attention until he digs his claws into her and reminds her that if Asriel and Mrs. Coulter think Dust is bad, then it must be good. Lyra likes this idea, and adds that if it's good, they should be looking for it, too, to find it before Asriel does, and save it.(4)

Still, Lyra can't help feeling guilty about Roger, and worries that if they try to do something big they'll get it all wrong again. Pan says they can ask more questions next time, and make sure they're doing right. Lyra worries they'll be alone, but they're never alone with each other. Finally, Lyra perks up.

“And we’ve got the alethiometer,” she said. “Yeah. I reckon we’ve got to do it, Pan. We’ll go up there and we’ll search for Dust, and when we’ve found it we’ll know what to do.” Roger’s body lay still in her arms. She let him down gently. “And we’ll do it,” she said. She turned away. Behind them lay pain and death and fear; ahead of them lay doubt, and danger, and fathomless mysteries. But they weren’t alone. So Lyra and her dæmon turned away from the world they were born in, and looked toward the sun, and walked into the sky.

(1) Aside from the "saving them from original sin" bit, adults abuse kids for the same reason anyone abuses anyone: control. Especially if you feel out of control in one area of your life, you try to assert control in another. Children are even easier to abuse and control than most groups, because they're small, they're underestimated, and our societies aren't generally built to recognize personhood until some arbitrary age of adulthood. Kids may not disappear to the Gobblers in our world, but they are allowed to fall through cracks all the time by systems that were built by those who didn't care about the consequences. And we see that cycle of control as perfectly normal, which makes abuse of it all that much easier. (2) You ever have an ex you can't see because you can't resist temptation? I suspect that's what's going on here. No matter how much they hate each other, it only fuels the same fire as the lust. (3) And just how did she cross that chasm? Was there another path after all? (4) So, this Eve must seek to keep original sin in motion, against the patriarchal forces that wish to keep her ignorant and eliminate it entirely. But, doesn't that require an Adam? Roger's dead, and Lyra's about to leave her world behind. Who might she meet in her next adventure?

Bunny just put his hand where his heart is as he is completely touch by the gift and how sweet the scene of being too as bunny just hugs his siblings happily as soon after the moment between both of them passes taro was the next to give his present

*Haruki and Mizuki smile as they hug Bunny happily in return, touched by the scene from before as well. Taro then presents a hand-carved wooden statue of Asriel, showing both his demonic features and his angelic ones, with a wire positioning his halo over his head as Taro grins at him.*

Taro: Here you go! I know you're a really humble guy and don't look at yourself a lot, but hopefully you can look at this and think "you know, I'm real cool-looking." Y'know, help you love yourself more.

updates as of week 8 ending !

i put the thing up a second time!

and i've made some plans...

recently i've been kinda depressed! i was thinking about my own happiness as a bucket with a hole in it, that's how someone described having ADHD. like your happiness doesn't remain, it needs to be constantly filled over and over. that's how i feel with depression - i need to keep doing stuff.

i had an idea to fill the bucket with water instead of dirt this time, because i imagined a wellspring of joy. a spring that natural water comes out of. very religious imagery!

thinking about a asriel suzie miniike review for the movie unbreakable -- "water is life and death...it is one of the base things that keeps us alive... yet it also obstructs and destroys. it fills our lungs... torrents of it sweep away and crush our homes... it nourishes plants just as easily as it would uproot them..."

and then connects this to the idea of narrative and self-belief -- "art and narrative as the most cleansing, illuminating, life-sustaining, inescapable force out there, pulsing through us in an intrinsic way. art and narrative as destruction, as uncontrollable death, as something to be feared. we find our purpose, we rediscover life. but what that means can be terrifyingly broad."

and also,, in one of my favourite books - the wind-up bird chronicle - there's a character called kano malta who lived in a mountain range with a spring of water that makes her psychic and heals all her trauma.

so i was thinking water bucket, surrounded by dirt. no more stick in the middle. (and no electronics, obviously).

i decided to push the work further in the corner, so there's more space for cardboard to build into, and to make the light. i bought ping pong balls and a torch to make it, and i'll install that on tueday.

i imagined designing the cardboard like a much bigger version of my cardboard street-light from two tables, and it kind of looks like a wizard's cap in my drawing. or candy mountain from charlie the unicorn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i was imagining constantly layering cardboard over itself, slowly building the work larger and larger - inspired by troy and abed's pillow fort in community.

i was also thinking about layers of deep ice containing bacteria from thousands of years ago, and how there's layers of ice from a long time ago, and the deeper you go, the further back in time you go.

so, the idea of layering cardboard and changing the shape over and over. i imagine people crawling inside the work, getting deeper and deeper into the past as they go. i'm not sure i can actually achieve that, in such a short time, though.

i was thinking about layering history into the work by drawing or writing or painting or spending time and filling up the vibe of each layer over and over, and then pasting over it like new wallpaper. and then inside this cave, a little wellspring. a metaphor!!!!

also i really should tape up the wire ends, cos they're sharp and dangerous. ugh but there's so many of them,,,

on tuesday i'm gonna move the work! add on the light! add in the bucket and longer pole, re-tape the cardboard.... that means i need to go to bunnings on monday!

Chapter 3 (An Old Friend)

Chara wakes up before Frisk and sees a familiar shape in the dark. They hadn't seen it while glancing around the room it was Flowey sitting on a shelf with a turned on Gameboy playing Pokemon Red. Frisk eventually wakes up and says hi to Chara. Chara and Frisk eat breakfast and head to the car. When they arrive at the Embassy, only Chara leaves the car. Chara in a confused tone asks,”Don't you have work today?” Frisk, starting to giggle, says,”I have off today.” Chara, now wondering what was funny, nods and heads inside the Embassy for training. When Frisk confirms that Chara can't see her anymore, They drives to Alphys’ house. Frisk rings the doorbell and waits for Alphys to unlock the door. After 10 minutes, no one answers the door, so Frisk just walks in knowing the combination to their house. They walk into Alphys watching anime on her TV. Alphys hears someone walk inside and quickly turns off the TV and rushes to greet Frisk. Frisk asks in a more serious tone,”Is it ready? Is the machine to get Asriel back ready?” Alphys, now panicking, says,”I forgot all about it. I've just been watching anime all day.” She told Frisk to come back after 5-10 minutes. So Frisk agreed and went home. When they arrive, Toriel asks,”Is he back yet? Is my sweet baby boy back yet?” Frisk with an unsure face says,”Well…Alphys forgot to build the machine so…no.”Frisk continues,”But she said to check in after 5-10 minutes to go back.”Toriel, with a sigh, leaves the room. Frisk now waits in their room watching some of the anime Alphys told them they had to watch. Frisk finishes 10 episodes when they realize it's been 2 hours since they had left Alphys’ house. They ran to put their shoes on, ran to the car, and drove away. When they got to Alphys’ house again they saw a huge machine with wires everywhere. It takes an hour to get there and now Chara only has 3 hours left of work. They ask,”is it done? Can we now turn Flowey back into Asriel '' Alphys, with a smile, says yes. Alphys tells frisk to put flowey into the machine, when Frisk checks their car, they realize they forgot Flowey. They tell Alphys that they will right back, and drive back to their house. When they get back, they take Flowey from their Gameboy, and drive away once again. Now they only have one hour to bring Asriel back. They give Flowey to Alphys as soon as they walk in, and Flowey isn’t too happy. He says to Alphys,”If you don't put me down right now I swear to Asgore I'll make your life a living hell!” Alphys is unfazed and plops Flowey into the machine. She then goes to the control panel and turns on the machine. After about 5 minutes, Frisk opens the door to a black silhouette embedded within smoke. When the smoke clears, they see Asriel standing with their eyes closed. When Asriel opens his eyes, he doesn't even get a chance to say Hi. Frisk grades him by the hand and rushes to the Embassy. Frisk finds Chara sitting on a bench and calls for her to come in. When they look inside, they tear up and rush inside to hug Asriel. Once they get home Toriel does the same thing that happened when they saw Chara. Chara with a sad look walks up to Asriel and says,”Hey look…I'm sorry.” Asriel tells Chara that it happened along time ago and that they shouldn't worry about it. They hug Asriel one last time and head to bed with Frisk awaiting the next morning.

Checking in with Undyne, seeing how she’s doing. Featuring Gaster signing with his real hands for once! Mostly.

Interestingly two lines in this only have their full power if you’ve been following the little extra side comics and such (specifically, marshmallows and rain). Gave Asgore heterochromia for this one like @fishmum does since I thought it was a cute idea. :B Mushbat and Anacondna provided by jazaaboo, who I can always rely on for a monster in a pinch.

Yet another decision that ended up haunting Gaster forever.
