I climbed to the highest point of the dish's structure to watch the sunrise.


Down by the city gates, an Utaru huntress named Kin hailed me over and told me about a group of Tenakth rebels she'd come across when coming down the northern road. Were their forces already making their way to Riverhymn? I thanked her for the intel and moved on, heading for a Charger herd to pick up a mount.

I found one just past the eastern treeline, overriding one and speeding away before the others could attack.

Riding north west, I spotted another of the RCC's survey drones scanning an ancient military ruin overgrown with blight. With this data, Gaia would be able to analyse the rot's chemical composition in more detail.


To get the height I needed, I climbed the rock face behind the ruin and dropped down inside, right on top of a single Scrounger that had gotten itself stuck inside somehow. I then climbed on top of the ruin walls, jumped onto the drone and weighed it down to the blighted soil. Another drone connection to return to Gaia's fleet.


Riding north, I soon crossed paths with the rebels Kin had warned me about. They were in the middle of attacking a large Utaru camp, and it seemed they'd caught the travelers unaware. There were only a few survivors left fighting, but I made short work of the raiding Tenakth. I took them on head to head, and when all that was left was their heavily-armoured, hammer wielding leader, I obliterated him from a distance with what was probably two too many exploding spikes.


That brought an abrupt end to the attack. Only three Utaru were left standing; they thanked me and tried to pay me with what they could. I tried to turn them down, but the Utaru seem as set as the Oseram on payments due. Reciprocity likely fits in nicely with their philosophy of balanced cycles, give and take. I'm not complaining.

So many dead. The surviving Utaru collected their seed pouches and set off to return them to Plainsong. They didn't seem to care so much about the corpses themselves. Wherever they fall, they'll nourish the soil; the life is gone from them, they explained, passed into the potential new life of those carried seeds.

I rode up to the base of the promontory to search for Kalae, as it was on my way to Riverhymn. According to Bree, it used to be a rite of passage for new Chorus members to make the climb and lay an offering at the altar at the peak, but since the derangement it has become to dangerous, and no one has completed the rite for years. Kalae did so not only because of her strength, but to prove to the Chorus that she valued their traditions despite her radical belief in notions like, for example, not standing around and waiting to starve. The woven path leading up had been completely destroyed in the years of disuse. I made the climb by hand.


Grazers and Skydrifters patrolled the rise. It looked like they'd come in to harvest the carcasses Kalae left behind. I targeted the Grazers first, setting shock wire traps to stun them so I could run in for the kill. I still haven't got my hands on any fire arrows. Hunters seem to prefer acid around here, what with all the Bristlebacks and Leaplashers. So, no easy kill shot for Grazers.

Ropes and power cell explosions for the Skydrifters, using my shock war bow. It never gets old. I also put my frost ammo to use; it's very affective against them, freezing them up too much to fly.

At the back of the clearing, where once more the promontory path had been torn down by the elements and machines, I found tracks from the Utaru search party, along with the instrument they'd found and used to claim Kalae's death. It was pretty clear that Kalae couldn't have fallen in this spot, though—there was a huge tree that should have caught a falling body. I was beginning to think I was right to find the situation suspicious. I climbed up to the next clearing. Given the destruction so far, the climb to the promontory peak was sure to be a whole lot harder than it used to be.


I climbed the sheer cliff and though a short cavern before entering the ritual site. I could see why the Utaru coveted the place; it was beautiful, quiet, and untouched by machines. Only their woven bridges and paths disturbed the natural beauty, and even those, woven from native grasses and barks, blended in so as to seem like extensions of the landscape. I found no sign of Kalae's body, only her tracks that seemed to have taken her up the climb, but never back down.


At the peak of the promontory was an archway framing a spectacular view of Plainsong. This was how the Utaru first found it, the huge satellite array surrounded by fields of crops tended by Gaia's Plowhorns, their land gods. Those long-ago pilgrims might have walked all the way from the sacred lands, or split off in ensuing conflicts as the new humans of Gaia migrated west. I can see why this place is holy to them, though that's no reason to die in it.
I found more signs of Kalae at the altar. There was a pot of dye made from crushed yellow flowers, likely intended to be added to a mural on a nearby rock face. All the marks were long dry. Kalae never finished her ritual. I picked up her path with my Focus, following dye residue on the ground to a thicket full of broken branches and spots of blood, sure signs of a struggle. Someone snuck up on Kalae as she knelt at the altar and fought her through to the clearing beyond. I followed their trail.


I soon found Kalae, and her killer. Both were bruised and beaten, but it was Kalae that had died first, her fingers still stained with yellow dye. From the bruising around her neck, it was clear that she'd been strangled. As for the other woman, it looked as if she'd been shot by a machine, a clean laser burn shorn through her chest.

Before I could examine the scene any further, a pair of Stalkers showed themselves and bounded down into the clearing. So, that explained what killed Kalae's murderer. I snuck behind cover to avoid the Stalkers' sniper blasts, setting shock wire traps to down one of them before going in with my spear. I destroyed both machines by catching them in the explosions of their own land mines, set off by my arrows as as they sprayed the traps in their wakes.
By the time I'd taken both of them down, harvested their valuable parts, and collected evidence, including the seed pouches from both Kalae and her killer, the sun had set.

Growing exhausted by this time, I rappelled and glided my way down from the promontory and headed back to the Utaru camp I'd passed along the way.

Whoever killed Kalae, I'll bet the Chorus is behind it somehow. The leaders of the Utaru are about to hate me a whole lot more, despite the fact that I saved them all from certain death from Hepheastus and healed their land god. I suppose I did kill their other land god, but I won't be advertising that.


There was a small hut at the camp, mostly enclosed and stocked with soft, warm grasses. Itchy too, but better shelter than I could've hoped for. I'll head to Riverhymn tomorrow to make sure there aren't more Tenakth rebels in the area, then return to Plainsong to pass the grave news to Bree.
